We have acquired deep, H-band, imaging for a sample of 286 Virgo cluster galaxies with B <= 16 mag and extracted surface photometry from optical g,r,i,z Sloan Digital Sky Survey images of 742 Virgo Cluster Catalog galaxies, including those with H-band images. We confirm the detection of a dip in the luminosity function indicative of a discontinuity in the cluster galaxy population; the dip is more pronounced at redder wavelengths. We find, in agreement with earlier works of Tully & Verheijen and ours for Ursa Major cluster galaxies, a clear dichotomy between high and low surface brightness galaxy disks. The difference between the low and high brightness peaks of Virgo disk galaxies is ~2 H-mag arcsec^-2, significantly larger than any systematic errors. The high surface brightness disk galaxies have two distinct classes of high and low concentration bulges, while low surface brightness galaxies have only low concentration bulges. Early-type galaxies exhibit a similar structural bimodality though offset from that of the spiral galaxies towards higher surface brightnesses. Both the early- and late-type structural bimodalities are uncorrelated with colour or any other structural parameter except, possibly, circular velocity. The structural bimodality may be linked to dynamical properties of galaxies. Low angular momentum systems may collapse to form dynamically important disks with high surface brightness, while high angular momentum systems would end up as low surface brightness galaxies dominated by the dark halo at all radii. The confirmation of structural bimodality for gas-rich and gas-poor galaxies in the high-density Virgo cluster as well as the low-density UMa cluster suggests that this phenomenon is independent of environment.
We report on measurements of the disk central surface brightnesses (mu0) at 3.6 microns for 438 galaxies selected by distance and absolute magnitude cutoffs from the 2350+ galaxies in the Spitzer Survey of Stellar Structure in Galaxies (S4G), one of the largest and deepest homogeneous mid-infrared datasets of nearby galaxies. Our sample contains nearly 3 times more galaxies than the most recent study of the mu0 distribution. We demonstrate that there is a bimodality in the distribution of mu0. Between the low and high surface brightness galaxy regimes there is a lack of intermediate surface br…
We present griz and H-band surface brightness profiles and bulge-disk decompositions for a morphologically-broad sample of 286 Virgo cluster galaxies. The H-band data come from a variety of sources including our survey of 171 galaxies at the UH 2.2-m, CFHT and UKIRT telescopes, and another 115 galaxies from the Two-Micron All-Sky Survey and GOLDMine archives. The optical data for all 286 Virgo galaxies were extracted from Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) images. The H-band and SDSS griz data were analyzed in a homogeneous manner using our own software, yielding a consistent set of deep, multi-b…
We present g-z color and z-band surface brightness fluctuations (SBF) measurements for 43 early-type galaxies in the Fornax cluster imaged with HST/ACS. These are combined with measurements for Virgo cluster galaxies to derive a revised, nonlinear calibration of the z-band SBF absolute magnitude as a function of g-z. In all, we tabulate recalibrated SBF distances for 134 galaxies in Virgo, Fornax, the Virgo W' group, and NGC4697 in the Virgo Southern Extension. The calibration procedure yields a precise relative distance modulus for Fornax with respect to Virgo of 0.42+/-0.03 mag, or a distanc…
Although early observations with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) pointed to a sharp dichotomy among early-type galaxies in terms of the logarithmic slope gamma' of their central surface brightness profiles, several studies in the past few years have called this finding into question. In particular, recent imaging surveys of 143 early-type galaxies belonging to the Virgo and Fornax Clusters using the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) on board HST have not found a dichotomy in gamma', but instead a systematic progression from central luminosity deficit to excess relative to the inward extrapola…
We compare the distribution of diffuse intracluster light detected in the Virgo Cluster via broadband imaging with that inferred from searches for intracluster planetary nebulae (IPNe). We find a rough correspondence on large scales (~ 100 kpc) between the two, but with very large scatter (~ 1.3 mag/arcsec^2). On smaller scales (1 -- 10 kpc), the presence or absence of correlation is clearly dependent on the underlying surface brightness. On these scales, we find a correlation in regions of higher surface brightness (mu_V < ~27) which are dominated by the halos of large galaxies such as M87, M…
We present an algorithm for the detection of Low Surface Brightness (LSB) galaxies in images, called MARSIAA (MARkovian Software for Image Analysis in Astronomy), which is based on multi-scale Markovian modeling. MARSIAA can be applied simultaneously to different bands. It segments an image into a user-defined number of classes, according to their surface brightness and surroundings - typically, one or two classes contain the LSB structures. We have developed an algorithm, called DetectLSB, which allows the efficient identification of LSB galaxies from among the candidate sources selected by M…
The extended environment of galaxies contains a wealth of information about the formation and life cycle of galaxies which are regulated by accretion and feedback processes. Observations of neutral hydrogen are routinely used to image the high brightness disks of galaxies and to study their kinematics. Deeper observations will give more insight into the distribution of diffuse gas in the extended halo of the galaxies and the IGM, where numerical simulations predict a cosmic web of extended structures and gaseous filaments. To observe the extended environment of galaxies, column density sensiti…
Using the far-infrared emission, as observed by the Herschel Virgo Cluster Survey (HeViCS), and the integrated HI and CO brightness, we infer the dust and total gas mass for a magnitude limited sample of 35 metal rich spiral galaxies in Virgo. The CO flux correlates tightly and linearly with far-infrared fluxes observed by Herschel. Molecules in these galaxies are more closely related to cold dust rather than to dust heated by star formation or to optical/NIR brightness. We show that dust mass establishes a stronger correlation with the total gas mass than with the atomic or molecular componen…
We present a photometric study of the globular clusters (GCs) in the Virgo giant elliptical galaxy M86 based on Washington CT1 images. The colors of the GCs in M86 show a bimodal distribution with a blue peak at (C -T1) = 1.30 and a red peak at (C -T1) = 1.72. The spatial distribution of the red GCs is elongated similarly to that of the stellar halo, while that of the blue GCs is roughly circular. The radial number density profile of the blue GCs is more extended than that of the red GCs. The radial number density profile of the red GCs is consistent with the surface brightness profile of the …
We continue our deep optical imaging survey of the Virgo cluster using the CWRU Burrell Schmidt telescope by presenting B-band surface photometry of the core of the Virgo cluster in order to study the cluster's intracluster light (ICL). We find ICL features down to mu_b ~ 29 mag sq. arcsec, confirming the results of Mihos et al. (2005), who saw a vast web of low-surface brightness streams, arcs, plumes, and diffuse light in the Virgo cluster core using V-band imaging. By combining these two data sets, we are able to measure the optical colors of many of the cluster's low-surface brightness fea…
The Next Generation Virgo Cluster Survey (NGVS) is a CFHT Large Program that is using the wide field of view capabilities of the MegaCam camera to map the entire Virgo Cluster from its core to virial radius. The observing strategy has been optimized to detect very low surface brightness structures in the cluster, including intracluster stellar streams and faint dwarf spheroidal galaxies. We present here the current status of this ongoing survey, with an emphasis on the detection and analysis of the very low-mass galaxies in the cluster that have been revealed by the NGVS.
We present 3.6 and 4.5 micron Spitzer IRAC imaging over 0.77 square degrees at the Virgo cluster core for the purpose of understanding the formation mechanisms of the low surface brightness intracluster light features. Instrumental and astrophysical backgrounds that are hundreds of times higher than the signal were carefully characterized and removed. We examine both intracluster light plumes as well as the outer halo of the giant elliptical M87. For two intracluster light plumes, we use optical colors to constrain their ages to be greater than 3 & 5 Gyr, respectively. Upper limits on the IRAC…
We examine the velocity field of galaxies around the Virgo cluster induced by its overdensity. A sample of 1792 galaxies with distances from the Tip of the Red Giant Branch, the Cepheid luminosity, the SNIa luminosity, the surface brightness fluctuation method, and the Tully-Fisher relation has been used to study the velocity-distance relation in the Virgocentric coordinates. Attention was paid to some observational biases affected the Hubble flow around Virgo. We estimate the radius of the zero-velocity surface for the Virgo cluster to be within (5.0 - 7.5) Mpc corresponding to (17 - 26)^\cir…
We report evidence for a striking difference between S0 galaxies in the local field and in the Virgo Cluster. While field S0 galaxies have disks whose surface-brightness profiles are roughly equally divided between the three main types (Types I, II, and III: single-exponential, truncated, and antitruncated), Virgo S0s appear to be entirely lacking in disk truncations. More specifically, the fraction of truncations in S0 galaxies with M_B < -17 is 28% +7/-6% for the field, versus 0% +4/-0% for the Virgo Cluster galaxies; the difference is significant at the 99.7% level. The discrepancy is made …
We report the discovery of 11 very faint (r< 23), low surface brightness (μ_r< 27 mag/arcsec^2) dwarf galaxies in one deep field in the Virgo cluster, obtained by the prime focus cameras (LBC) at the Large Binocular Telescope (LBT). These extend our previous sample to reach a total number of 27 galaxies in a field of just of 0.17 deg^2 located at a median distance of 390 kpc from the cluster center. Their association with the Virgo cluster is supported by their separate position in the central surface brightness - total magnitude plane with respect to the background galaxies of similar total m…
This work uses observed galaxy surface brightness profiles at high redshifts to determine the cosmological model best suited to interpret these observations. Theoretical predictions of galactic surface brightness profiles are compared to observational data in two cosmological models, $Λ$CDM and Einstein-de Sitter, to calculate the evolutionary effects of different spacetime geometries in these profiles in order to try to find out if the available data is capable of indicating the cosmology that best represents actual galactic brightness profiles observations. Starting from the connection betwe…
Based on the wealth of multiwavelength imaging data from the SDSS, we investigate whether dwarf and giant early-type galaxies in the Virgo cluster follow a continuum in their structural parameters and their stellar population characteristics. More specifically we study the relation between size and brightness for the galaxies and their color magnitude relation. In both cases, we find noticeable deviations from a simple joint behavior of dwarfs and giants. We discuss these findings in the light of the different formation mechanisms commonly assumed for dwarf and giant early types, thereby takin…
We use a combination of deep optical and near-infrared light profiles for a morphologically diverse sample of Virgo cluster galaxies to study the radially-resolved stellar populations of cluster galaxies over a wide range of galaxy structure. We find that, in the median, the age gradients of Virgo galaxies are either flat (lenticulars and Sa-Sb spirals) or positive (ellipticals, Sbc+Sc spirals, gas-rich dwarfs, and irregulars), while all galaxy types have a negative median metallicity gradient. Comparison of the galaxy stellar population diagnostics (age, metallicity, and gradients thereof) ag…
HI 1225+01 is an intergalactic gas cloud located on the outskirts of Virgo cluster. Its main components are two large clumps of comparable HI masses (M_HI ~ 10^9 Msun) separated by about 100 kpc. One of the clumps hosts a blue low-surface-brightness galaxy J1227+0136, while the other has no identified stellar emission and is sometimes referred to as a promising candidate of a "dark galaxy", an optically invisible massive intergalactic system. We present a deep optical image covering the whole HI 1225+01 structure for the first time, as well as a collection of archival data from ultraviolet to …
(abridged) We perform hydrodynamical simulations of minor-merger induced gas sloshing and the subsequent formation of cold fronts in the Virgo cluster. We show for the first time that sloshing reproduces all characteristics of the observed cold fronts quantitatively, and we suggest a third cold front at 20 kpc NW of the Virgo core. We identify several new features typical for sloshing cold fronts, most importantly a large-scale brightness asymmetry. We can trace these new features not only in Virgo, but also in other sloshing cold front clusters. By comparing synthetic and real observations, w…
We use deep V-band surface photometry of five of the brightest elliptical galaxies in the Virgo cluster to search for diffuse tidal streams, shells, and plumes in their outer halos (r > 50 kpc). We fit and subtract elliptical isophotal models from the galaxy images to reveal a variety of substructure, with surface brightnesses in the range mu_V= 26-29 mag/arcsec^2. M49 possesses an extended, interleaved shell system reminiscent of the radial accretion of a satellite companion, while M89's complex system of shells and plumes suggests a more complicated accretion history involving either multipl…
We use a combination of deep optical (gri) and near-infrared (H) photometry to study the radially-resolved colours of a broad sample of 300 Virgo cluster galaxies. For most galaxy types, we find that the median g-H colour gradient is either flat (gas-poor giants and gas-rich dwarfs) or negative (i.e., colours become bluer with increasing radius; gas-poor dwarfs, spirals, and gas-poor peculiars). Later-type galaxies typically exhibit more negative gradients than early-types. Given the lack of a correlation between the central colours and axis ratios of Virgo spiral galaxies, we argue that dust …
Observations of neutral hydrogen can provide a wealth of information about the kinematics of galaxies. To learn more about the large scale structures and accretion processes, the extended environment of galaxies have to be observed. Numerical simulations predict a cosmic web of extended structures and gaseous filaments. To observe the direct vicinity of galaxies, column densities have to be achieved that probe the regime of Lyman limit systems. Typically HI observations are limited to a brightness sensitivity of NHI ~ 10^19 cm-2 but this has to be improved by ~2 orders of magnitude. With the W…
We present an investigation into the origins of a series of interlaced narrow filamentary stellar structures, loops and plumes in the vicinity of the Virgo Cluster, edge-on spiral galaxy, NGC 4216 that were previously identified by the Blackbird Telescope. Using the deeper, higher-resolution and precisely calibrated optical CFHT/MegaCam images obtained as part of the Next Generation Virgo Cluster Survey (NGVS), we confirm the previously identified features and identify a few additional structures. The NGVS data allowed us to make a physical study of these low-surface brightness features and in…
We revisit the color-magnitude relation (CMR) of the Virgo cluster early-type galaxies in order to explore its alleged non-linearity. To this aim, we reanalyze the relation already published from data obtained within the ACS Virgo Cluster Survey of the Hubble Space Telescope, and perform our own photometry and analysis of the images of the 100 early-type galaxies observed as part of this survey. In addition, we compare our results with those reported in the literature from data of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We have found that when the brightest galaxies and untypical systems are excluded fr…
The intracluster light (ICL) is a faint diffuse stellar component in clusters made of stars not bound to individual galaxies. We have carried out a large scale study of this component in the nearby Virgo cluster. The diffuse light is traced using planetary nebulae (PNe). The PNe are detected in the on-band image due to their strong emission in the [OIII] 5007 line, but disappear in the off-band image. The contribution of Ly-alpha emitters at z=3.14 are corrected statistically using blank field surveys. We have surveyed a total area of 3.3 square degrees in the Virgo cluster with eleven fields …
The origin of the far-infrared emission from the nearby radio galaxy M87 remains a matter of debate. Some studies find evidence of a far-infrared excess due to thermal dust emission, whereas others propose that the far-infrared emission can be explained by synchrotron emission without the need for an additional dust emission component. We present Herschel PACS and SPIRE observations of M87, taken as part of the science demonstration phase observations of the Herschel Virgo Cluster Survey. We compare these data with a synchrotron model based on mid-infrared, far-infrared, submm and radio data f…
In this study we investigate the optical photometric properties of early-type galaxies in the Virgo cluster core region, by analysing their location on the colour magnitude relation (CMR) and the structural scaling relations down to faint magnitudes, and by constructing the luminosity function to compare it with theoretical expectations. We visually select potential cluster members based on morphology and angular size, excluding spiral galaxies. A photometric analysis has been carried out for 295 galaxies, using surface brightness profile shape and colour as further criteria to identify probab…
[Abridged] Using VLT/FORS2 spectroscopy, we have studied the properties of the central stellar populations of a sample of 38 nucleated early-type dwarf (dE) galaxies in the Virgo Cluster. We find that these galaxies do not exhibit the same average stellar population characteristics for different morphological subclasses. The nucleated galaxies without discs are older and more metal poor than the dEs with discs . The alpha-element abundance ratio appears consistent with the solar value for both morphological types. Besides a well-defined relation of metallicity and luminosity, we also find a cl…
The surface brightness fluctuations (SBF) method measures the variance in a galaxy's light distribution arising from fluctuations in the numbers and luminosities of individual stars per resolution element. Once calibrated for stellar population effects, SBF measurements with HST provide distances to early-type galaxies with unrivaled precision. Optical SBF data from HST for the Virgo and Fornax clusters give the relative distances of these nearby fiducial clusters with 2% precision and constrain their internal structures. Observations in hand will allow us to tie the Coma cluster, the standard…
We use deep Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field Camera 3 near-infrared imaging obtained of the GOODS-South field as part of the CANDELS survey to investigate a stellar mass-limited sample of quiescent galaxies at 1.5 < z < 2.5. We measure surface brightness profiles for these galaxies using a method that properly measures low surface brightness flux at large radii. We find that quiescent galaxies at z ~ 2 very closely follow Sersic profiles, with n_{median} = 3.7, and have no excess flux at large radii. Their effective radii are a factor ~ 4 smaller than those of low-redshift quiescent galaxies …
Early-type dwarf galaxies, once believed to be simple systems, have recently been shown to exhibit an intriguing diversity in structure and stellar content. To analyze this further, we started the SMAKCED project, and obtained deep H-band images for 101 early-type dwarf galaxies in the Virgo cluster in a brightness range of -19 \leq M_r \leq -16 mag, typically reaching a signal-to-noise of 1 per pixel of \sim0.25" at surface brightnesses \sim22.5 mag/arcsec^2 in the H-band. Here we present the first results of decomposing their two-dimensional light distributions. This is the first study dedic…
We study the two galaxies NGC4621 and NGC4374 in the Virgo cluster to derive their distances and stellar population properties. The targets have hosted three type Ia Supernova events allowing to investigate the correlations between the SNeIa and their host stellar systems. Using deep BVR data, obtained with FORS2 at the VLT, we analyse the Surface Brightness Fluctuations (SBF) properties of the targets. We adopt our measurements and existing calibrations to estimate the distance of NGC4621 and NGC4374. For stellar population analysis, we measured SBF amplitudes in different galaxy regions. We …
The Next Generation Virgo Cluster Survey has recently determined the luminosity function of galaxies in the core of the Virgo cluster down to unprecedented magnitude and surface brightness limits. Comparing simulations of cluster formation to the derived central stellar mass function, we attempt to estimate the stellar-to-halo-mass ratio (SHMR) for dwarf galaxies, as it would have been before they fell into the cluster. This approach ignores several details and complications, e.g., the contribution of ongoing star formation to the present-day stellar mass of cluster members, and the effects of…
We use a highly homogeneous set of data from 132 early-type galaxies in the Virgo and Fornax clusters in order to study the properties of the globular cluster luminosity function (GCLF). The globular cluster system of each galaxy was studied using a maximum likelihood approach to model the intrinsic GCLF after accounting for contamination and completeness effects. The results presented here update our Virgo measurements and confirm our previous results showing a tight correlation between the dispersion of the GCLF and the absolute magnitude of the parent galaxy. Regarding the use of the GCLF a…
The Next Generation Virgo Cluster Survey is a 104 square degree survey of the Virgo Cluster, carried out using the MegaPrime camera of the Canada-France-Hawaii telescope, from semesters 2009A-2012A. The survey will provide coverage of this nearby dense environment in the universe to unprecedented depth, providing profound insights into galaxy formation and evolution, including definitive measurements of the properties of galaxies in a dense environment in the local universe, such as the luminosity function. The limiting magnitude of the survey is g_AB = 25.7 (10 sigma point source), and the 2 …
The NGVS-IR project (Next Generation Virgo Survey - Infrared) is a contiguous near-infrared imaging survey of the Virgo cluster of galaxies. It complements the optical wide-field survey of Virgo (NGVS). The current state of NGVS-IR consists of Ks-band imaging of 4 deg^2 centered on M87, and J and Ks-band imaging of 16 deg^2 covering the region between M49 and M87. In this paper, we present the observations of the central 4 deg^2 centered on Virgo's core region. The data were acquired with WIRCam on the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope and the total integration time was 41 hours distributed in 34…
Sloshing cold fronts (CFs) arise from minor merger triggered gas sloshing. Their detailed structure depends on the properties of the intra-cluster medium (ICM): hydrodynamical simulations predict the CFs to be distorted by Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities (KHIs), but aligned magnetic fields, viscosity, or thermal conduction can suppress the KHIs. Thus, observing the detailed structure of sloshing CFs can be used to constrain these ICM properties. Both smooth and distorted sloshing CFs have been observed, indicating that the KHI is suppressed in some clusters, but not in all. Consequently, we nee…
We present high resolution FLAMES/VLT spectroscopy of intracluster planetary nebula (ICPN) candidates, targeting three new fields in the Virgo cluster core with surface brightness down to mu_B = 28.5. Based on the projected phase space information we separate the old and 12 newly-confirmed PNs into galaxy and intracluster components. The M87 PNs are confined to the extended stellar envelope of M87, within a projected radius of ~ 160 kpc, while the ICPNs are scattered across the whole surveyed region between M87 and M86. The velocity dispersions determined from the M87 PNs at projected radii of…
