The global geometric entanglement is studied in the context of newly-developed tensor network algorithms for finite systems. For one-dimensional quantum spin systems it is found that, at criticality, the leading finite-size correction to the global geometric entanglement per site behaves as $b/n$, where $n$ is the size of the system and $b$ a given coefficient. Our conclusion is based on the computation of the geometric entanglement per spin for the quantum Ising model in a transverse magnetic field and for the spin-1/2 XXZ model. We also discuss the possibility of coefficient $b$ being universal.
We introduce an entanglement branching operator to split a composite entanglement flow in a tensor network which is a promising theoretical tool for many-body systems. We can optimize an entanglement branching operator by solving a minimization problem based on squeezing operators. The entanglement branching is a new useful operation to manipulate a tensor network. For example, finding a particular entanglement structure by an entanglement branching operator, we can improve a higher-order tensor renormalization group method to catch a proper renormalization flow in a tensor network space. This…
Entanglement phase transitions in quantum chaotic systems subject to projective measurements and in random tensor networks have emerged as a new class of critical points separating phases with different entanglement scaling. We propose a mean-field theory of such transitions by studying the entanglement properties of random tree tensor networks. As a function of bond dimension, we find a phase transition separating area-law from logarithmic scaling of the entanglement entropy. Using a mapping onto a replica statistical mechanics model defined on a Cayley tree and the cavity method, we analyze …
We present a numerical strategy to efficiently estimate bipartite entanglement measures, and in particular the Entanglement of Formation, for many-body quantum systems on a lattice. Our approach exploits the Tree Tensor Operator tensor network ansatz, a positive loopless representation for density matrices which, as we demonstrate, efficiently encodes information on bipartite entanglement, enabling the up-scaling of entanglement estimation. Employing this technique, we observe a finite-size scaling law for the entanglement of formation in 1D critical lattice models at finite temperature for up…
We propose an entanglement-based algorithm of the tensor-network strong-disorder renormalization group (tSDRG) method for quantum spin systems with quenched randomness. In contrast to the previous tSDRG algorithm based on the energy spectrum of renormalized block Hamiltonians, we directly utilizes the entanglement structure associated with the blocks to be renormalized. We examine accuracy of the new algorithm for the random antiferromagnetic Heisenberg models on the one-dimensional, triangular, and square lattices. We then find that the entanglement-based tSDRG achieves better accuracy than t…

Traditional mean-field theory is a simple generic approach for understanding various phases. But that approach only applies to symmetry breaking states with short-range entanglement. In this paper, we describe a generic approach for studying 2D quantum phases with long-range entanglement (such as topological phases). Our approach is a variational method that uses tensor product states (also known as projected entangled pair states) as trial wave functions. We use a 2D real space RG algorithm to evaluate expectation values in these wave functions. We demonstrate our algorithm by studying severa…
Entanglement is a key quantum phenomena and understanding transitions between phases of matter with different entanglement properties are an interesting probe of quantum mechanics. We numerically study a model of a 2D tensor network proposed to have an entanglement entropy transition first considered by Vasseur et al.[Phys. Rev. B 100, 134203 (2019)]. We find that by varying the bond dimension of the tensors in the network we can observe a transition between an area and volume phase with a logarithmic critical point around $D\approx 2$. We further characterize the critical behavior measuring a…
We introduce a novel class of phase transitions separating quantum states with different entanglement features. An example of such an "entanglement phase transition" is provided by the many-body localization transition in disordered quantum systems, as it separates highly entangled thermal states at weak disorder from many-body localized states with low entanglement at strong disorder. In the spirit of random matrix theory, we describe a simple model for such transitions where a physical quantum many-body system lives at the "holographic" boundary of a bulk random tensor network. Using a repli…
We introduce a connection between entanglement induced by interaction and geometric phases acquired by a composite quantum spin system. We begin by analyzing the evaluation of cyclic (Aharonov-Anandan) and non-cyclic (Mukunda-Simon) geometric phases for general spin chains evolving in the presence of time-independent magnetic fields. Then, by considering Heisenberg chains, we show that the interaction geometric phase, namely, the total geometric phase with subtraction of free spin contributions, is directly related to the global (Meyer-Wallach) entanglement exhibited by an initially separable …
We investigate the entanglement spectrum in HOTRG ---tensor renormalization group (RG) method combined with the higher order singular value decomposition--- for two-dimensional (2D) classical vertex models. In the off-critical region, it is explained that the entanglement spectrum associated with the RG transformation is described by `doubling' of the spectrum of a corner transfer matrix. We then demonstrate that the doubling actually occurs for the square-lattice Ising model by HOTRG calculations up to $D = 64$, where $D$ is the cut-off dimension of tensors. At the critical point, we also fin…
We introduce a method for extracting meaningful entanglement measures of tensor network states in general dimensions. Current methods require the explicit reconstruction of the density matrix, which is highly demanding, or the contraction of replicas, which requires an effort exponential in the number of replicas and which is costly in terms of memory. In contrast, our method requires the stochastic sampling of matrix elements of the classically represented reduced states with respect to random states drawn from simple product probability measures constituting frames. Even though not correspon…
We propose the entanglement bipartitioning approach to design an optimal network structure of the tree-tensor-network (TTN) for quantum many-body systems. Given an exact ground-state wavefunction, we perform sequential bipartitioning of spin-cluster nodes so as to minimize the mutual information or the maximum loss of the entanglement entropy associated with the branch to be bipartitioned. We demonstrate that entanglement bipartitioning of up to 16 sites gives rise to nontrivial tree network structures for $S=1/2$ Heisenberg models in one and two dimensions. The resulting TTNs enable us to obt…
The entanglement entropy (EE) can measure the entanglement between a spatial subregion and its complement, which provides key information about quantum states. Here, rather than focusing on specific regions, we study how the entanglement entropy changes with small deformations of the entangling surface. This leads to the notion of entanglement susceptibilities. These relate the variation of the EE to the geometric variation of the subregion. We determine the form of the leading entanglement susceptibilities for a large class of scale invariant states, such as groundstates of conformal field th…
The geometric entanglement per lattice site, as a holistic measure of the multipartite entanglement, serves as a universal marker to detect quantum phase transitions in quantum many-body systems. However, it is very difficult to compute the geometric entanglement due to the fact that it involves a complicated optimization over all the possible separable states. In this paper, we propose a systematic method to efficiently compute the geometric entanglement per lattice site for quantum many-body lattice systems in two spatial dimensions in the context of a newly-developed tensor network algorith…
In tensor networks, a geometric operation of pushing a bond cut surface toward a minimal surface corresponds to entanglement distillation. Cutting bonds defines a reduced transition matrix on the bond cut surface and the associated quantum state naturally emerges from it. We justify this picture quantitatively by evaluating the trace distance between the maximally entangled states and the states on bond cut surfaces in the multi-scale entanglement renormalization ansatz (MERA) and matrix product states in a canonical form. Our numerical result for the random MERA is in a reasonable agreement w…
We explore a class of random tensor network models with "stabilizer" local tensors which we name Random Stabilizer Tensor Networks (RSTNs). For RSTNs defined on a two-dimensional square lattice, we perform extensive numerical studies of entanglement phase transitions between volume-law and area-law entangled phases of the one-dimensional boundary states. These transitions occur when either (a) the bond dimension $D$ of the constituent tensors is varied, or (b) the tensor network is subject to random breaking of bulk bonds, implemented by forced measurements. In the absence of broken bonds, we …
We continue the study of entanglement entropy for a QFT through a perturbative expansion of the path integral definition of the reduced density matrix. The universal entanglement entropy for a CFT perturbed by a relevant operator is calculated to second order in the coupling. We also explore the geometric dependence of entanglement entropy for a deformed planar entangling surface, finding surprises at second order.
Thermal entanglement of a geometrically frustrated spin-1 Heisenberg diamond cluster is examined within the framework of the exact diagonalization method by computing the measure of entanglement negativity. The calculated exact analytical results are applied in order to obtain theoretical prediction of the robustness of bipartite thermal entanglement of the tetranuclear nickel complex [Ni4(CO3)2(aetpy)8](ClO4)4 (aetpy = 2-aminoethyl-pyridine) against rising temperature and magnetic field.
We calculate the geometric phase of a bipartite two-level system coupled to an external environment. We analyze the reduced density matrix for an arbitrary initial state of the composite system and compute the correction to the unitary geometric phase through a kinematic approach. In all cases considered, we observe a similar structure as a function of the degree of the entanglement of the initial state. Further, we compute the entanglement entropy and concurrence of the bipartite state and analyze if there is any relation among these quantities and the geometric phase acquired during the nonu…
Tensor networks (TNs) have become one of the most essential building blocks for various fields of theoretical physics such as condensed matter theory, statistical mechanics, quantum information, and quantum gravity. This review provides a unified description of a series of developments in the TN from the statistical mechanics side. In particular, we begin with the variational principle for the transfer matrix of the 2D Ising model, which naturally leads us to the matrix product state (MPS) and the corner transfer matrix (CTM). We then explain how the CTM can be evolved to such MPS-based approa…
