We present a new lossy compressor for discrete sources. For coding a source sequence $x^n$, the encoder starts by assigning a certain cost to each reconstruction sequence. It then finds the reconstruction that minimizes this cost and describes it losslessly to the decoder via a universal lossless compressor. The cost of a sequence is given by a linear combination of its empirical probabilities of some order $k+1$ and its distortion relative to the source sequence. The linear structure of the cost in the empirical count matrix allows the encoder to employ a Viterbi-like algorithm for obtaining the minimizing reconstruction sequence simply. We identify a choice of coefficients for the linear combination in the cost function which ensures that the algorithm universally achieves the optimum rate-distortion performance of any Markov source in the limit of large $n$, provided $k$ is increased as $o(\log n)$.
We consider universal variable-to-fixed length compression of memoryless sources with a fidelity criterion. We design a dictionary codebook over the reproduction alphabet which is used to parse the source stream. Once a source subsequence is within a specified distortion of a dictionary codeword, the index of the codeword is emitted as the reproduced string. Our proposed dictionary consists of coverings of type classes in the boundary of transition from low to high empirical lossy rate. We derive the asymptotics of the ε-coding rate (up to the third-order term) of our coding scheme for large e…
The method of types presented by Csiszar and Korner is a central tool used to develop and analyze the basic properties and constraints on sequences of data over finite alphabets. A central problem considered using these tools is that of data compression, and specifically lossy data compression. In this work we consider this very problem, however, instead of sequences of data we consider directed graphs. We show that given a more natural distortion measure, fitting the data structure of a directed graph, the method of types cannot be applied. The suggested distortion measure aims to preserves t…
We consider a novel variant of $d$-semifaithful lossy coding in which the distortion measure is revealed only to the encoder and only at run-time, as well as an extension of it in which the distortion constraint $d$ is also revealed at run-time. Two forms of rate redundancy are used to analyze the performance, and achievability results of both a pointwise and minimax nature are demonstrated. The first coding scheme uses ideas from VC dimension and growth functions, the second uses appropriate quantization of the space of distortion measures, and the third relies on a random coding argument.
We consider a variant of the channel simulation problem with a single input and multiple outputs, where Alice observes a probability distribution $P$ from a set of prescribed probability distributions $\mathbb{\mathcal{P}}$, and sends a prefix-free codeword $W$ to Bob to allow him to generate $n$ i.i.d. random variables $X_{1},X_{2,}...,X_{n}$ which follow the distribution $P$. This can also be regarded as a lossy compression setting for probability distributions. This paper describes encoding schemes for three cases of $P$: $P$ is a distribution over positive integers, $P$ is a continuous dis…
We propose novel compression algorithms for time-varying channel state information (CSI) in wireless communications. The proposed scheme combines (lossy) vector quantisation and (lossless) compression. First, the new vector quantisation technique is based on a class of parametrised companders applied on each component of the normalised CSI vector. Our algorithm chooses a suitable compander in an intuitively simple way whenever empirical data are available. Then, the sequences of quantisation indices are compressed using a context-tree-based approach. Essentially, we update the estimate of the …
Polar lattices, which are constructed from polar codes, have recently been proved to be able to achieve the capacity of the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel. In this work, we propose a new construction of polar lattices to solve the dual problem, i.e., achieving the rate-distortion bound of a memoryless Gaussian source, which means that polar lattices can also be good for the lossy compression of continuous sources. The structure of the proposed polar lattices enables us to integrate the post-entropy coding process into the lattice quantizer, which simplifies the quantization proce…

Lossy compression algorithms are typically designed to achieve the lowest possible distortion at a given bit rate. However, recent studies show that pursuing high perceptual quality would lead to increase of the lowest achievable distortion (e.g., MSE). This paper provides nontrivial results theoretically revealing that, \textit{1}) the cost of achieving perfect perception quality is exactly a doubling of the lowest achievable MSE distortion, \textit{2}) an optimal encoder for the "classic" rate-distortion problem is also optimal for the perceptual compression problem, \textit{3}) distortion l…

We consider a novel lossy compression approach based on unconditional diffusion generative models, which we call DiffC. Unlike modern compression schemes which rely on transform coding and quantization to restrict the transmitted information, DiffC relies on the efficient communication of pixels corrupted by Gaussian noise. We implement a proof of concept and find that it works surprisingly well despite the lack of an encoder transform, outperforming the state-of-the-art generative compression method HiFiC on ImageNet 64x64. DiffC only uses a single model to encode and denoise corrupted pixels…
