In this comment, I discuss a recent path-integral Monte Carlo calculation by Pearson, Pang, and Chen (Phys. Rev. A 58, 4796 (1998)). For bosons with a small hard-core interaction in a harmonic trap, the authors find a critical temperature which does not change with respect to the non-interacting gas. The calculation suffers from a serious discretization error of the many-particle density matrix.
Divergence exponents of the first-order quantum correction of a two-dimensional hard-sphere Bose atoms are obtained by an effective field theory method. The first-order correction to the ground-state energy density with respect to the zeroth-order is given by $\cale_1/\cale_0 \sim |D-2|^{-\al}|\lnγ|^{-\al'}$, where $D$ is the spatial dimension, and $γ$ is the gas parameter ($γ=n a^D$). As $D \to 2$, $\al =\al'=1$. We show that the first-order quantum correction of the energy density is not perturbative in low dimensions of $D < 2.2$ regardless of any gas parameter which is much less that 1.
We determine the critical temperature of a 3-d homogeneous system of hard-sphere Bosons by path-integral Monte Carlo simulations and finite-size scaling. At low densities, we find that the critical temperature is increased by the repulsive interactions, in the form of a power law in density with exponent 1/3: $ΔT_C/T_0\sim (na^3)^{1/3}$. At high densities the result for liquid helium, namely a lower critical temperature than in the non-interacting case, is recovered. We give a microscopic explanation for the observed behavior.
Vortex states in the mixture of ultracold atomic clouds of bosons and fermions are investigated using the effective Hamiltonian for the Bose subsystem. A stability of the Bose system in the case of attractive interaction between components is studied in the framework of variational Bose wave function and Thomas-Fermi approximation. It is shown that the critical number of bosons increases in the presence of the vortex.
An effective Hamiltonian for the Bose system in the mixture of ultracold atomic clouds of bosons and fermions is obtained by integrating out the Fermi degrees of freedom. An instability of the Bose system is found in the case of attractive interaction between components in good agreement with the experiment on the bosonic $^{87}$Rb and fermionic $^{40}$K mixture.
We consider supersymmetry field theory with supercomponents being the square root of the Bose condensate density, the amplitude of its fluctuations and Grassmannian fields related to the Fermi particles density. The fermion number is demonstrated to be conserved in degenerated Fermi-Bose mixtures with unbroken supersymmetry when the system is invariant with respect to inversion of the time arrow. We show the supersymmetry breaking allows one to derive field equations describing behavior of real Bose-Fermi mixtures. Solution of related field equations reveals the cooling of homogeneously distri…
Phase transitions are investigated in the Bose-Fermi-Hubbard model in the mean field and hard-core boson approximations for the case of infinitely small fermion transfer and repulsive on-site boson-fermion interaction. The behavior of the Bose-Einstein condensate order parameter and grand canonical potential is analyzed as functions of the chemical potential of bosons at zero temperature. The possibility of change of order of the phase transition to the superfluid phase in the regime of fixed values of the chemical potentials of Bose- and Fermi-particles is established. The relevant phase diag…
The energy and structure of dilute gases of hard spheres in three dimensions is discussed, together with some aspects of the corresponding 2D systems. A variational approach in the framework of the Hypernetted Chain Equations (HNC) is used starting from a Jastrow wavefunction that is optimized to produce the best two--body correlation factor with the appropriate long range. Relevant quantities describing static properties of the system are studied as a function of the gas parameter $x=ρa^d$ where $ρ$, $a$ and $d$ are the density, $s$--wave scattering length of the potential and dimensionality …
The ideal uniform two-dimensional (2D) Fermi and Bose gases are considered both in the thermodynamic limit and the finite case. We derive May's Theorem, viz. the correspondence between the internal energies of the Fermi and Bose gases in the thermodynamic limit. This results in both gases having the same heat capacity. However, as we shall show, the thermodynamic limit is never truly reached in two dimensions and so it is essential to consider finite-size effects. We show in an elementary manner that for the finite 2D Bose gas, a pseudo-Bose-Einstein condensate forms at low temperatures, incom…
By using the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov equations within the Popov approximation, we investigate the thermodynamic properties of a dilute binary Bose-Fermi mixture confined in an isotropic harmonic trap. For mixtures with an attractive Bose-Fermi interaction we find a sizable enhancement of the condensate fraction and of the critical temperature of Bose-Einstein condensation with respect to the predictions for a pure interacting Bose gas. Conversely, the influence of the repulsive Bose-Fermi interaction is less pronounced. The possible relevance of our results in current experiments on trapped $^…
We investigate the properties of a dilute boson-fermion mixture at zero temperature. The ground-state energy of the system is calculated to second order in the Bose-Fermi coupling constant. The Green's function formalism is applied to obtain results for the effect of Bose-Fermi interactions on the spectrum of phonon excitations, the momentum distribution, the condensate fraction and the superfluid density of the bosonic component. A quantitative discussion of these effects is presented in the case of mixtures with attractive interspecies interaction.
We consider a mixture of a single-component Bose gas and a two-component Fermi gas at temperatures where the Bose gas is almost fully condensed. In such a mixture, two fermionic atoms can interact with each other by exchanging a phonon that propagates through the Bose condensate. We calculate the interaction potential due to this mechanism and determine the effective s-wave scattering length for two fermions that interact, both directly by the interatomic potentials, as well as by the above mentioned exchange mechanism. We find that the effective scattering length is quite sensitive to changes…
We show the emergence of a strongly interacting Bose-Fermi mixture from a two-component Fermi mixture with population imbalance. By analyzing in situ density profiles of $^6$Li atoms in the BCS-BEC crossover regime we identify a critical interaction strength, beyond which all minority atoms pair up with majority atoms, and form a Bose condensate. This is the regime where the system can be effectively described as a boson-fermion mixture. We determine the dimer-fermion and dimer-dimer scattering lengths and beyond-mean-field contributions. Our study realizes a Gedanken experiment of bosons imme…
In this paper, we calculate the explicit expression for the fugacity for two- and three-dimensional weakly interacting Bose and Fermi gases from their equations of state in isochoric and isobaric processes, respectively, based on the mathematical result of the boundary problem of analytic functions --- the homogeneous Riemann-Hilbert problem. We also discuss the Bose-Einstein condensation phase transition of three-dimensional hard-sphere Bose gases.
We study the effects of interaction between bosons and fermions in a Bose-Fermi mixtures loaded in an optical lattice. We concentrate on the destruction of a bosonic Mott phase driven by repulsive interaction between bosons and fermions. Once the Mott phase is destroyed, the system enters a superfluid phase where the movements of bosons and fermions are correlated. We show that this phase has simultaneously correlations reminiscent of a conventional superfluid and of a pseudo-spin density wave order.
We present an analytical approximation for nonlinear dynamics of trapped Bose-co ndensed gases. The new approximation is a substantial improvement over the Thomas-Fermi approximation and is shown to be applicable for systems with a rather small number of atoms $N$. The calculated aspect ratios after ballistic expansion are found to be in good agreement with those observed in recent experiments.
The wave function of a dilute hard sphere Bose gas at low temperatures is discussed, emphasizing the formation of pairs. The pair distribution function is calculated for two values of $\sqrt{ρa^3}$.
In the wake of successful experiments in Fermi condensates, experimental attention is broadening to study resonant interactions in degenerate Bose-Fermi mixtures. Here we consider the properties and stability of the fermionic molecules that can be created in such a mixture near a Feshbach resonance (FR). To do this, we consider the two-body scattering matrix in the many-body environment, and assess its complex poles. The stability properties of these molecules strongly depend on their centre-of-mass motion, because they must satisfy Fermi statistics. At low centre-of-mass momenta the molecules…
We study static properties of attractively interacting Bose-Fermi mixtures of uniform atomic gases at zero temperature. Using Green's function formalism we calculate boson-fermion scattering amplitude and fermion self-energy in the medium to lowest order of the hole line expansion. We study ground state energy and pressure as functions of the scattering length for a few values of the boson-fermion mass ratio $m_b/m_f$ and the number ratio $N_b/N_f$. We find that the attractive contribution to energy is greatly enhanced for small values of the mass ratio. We study the role of the Bose-Fermi pai…
A self-consistent field model for a mixture of Bose and Fermi particles is formulated. There is explored in detail the case of a delta-like interaction, for which the thermodynamic functions are obtained, and Bose-Einstein condensation of interacting particles in the presence of the admixture of fermions is studied. It is shown that the admixture of Fermi particles leads to reducing of the temperature of Bose-Einstein condensation and smoothing of features of thermodynamic quantities at the transition temperature. As in the case of a pure Bose system, in the state of a mixture with condensate …
We investigate a dilute mixture of bosons and spin-polarized fermions in one-dimension. With an attractive Bose-Fermi scattering length the ground-state is a self-bound droplet, i.e. a Bose-Fermi bright soliton where the Bose and Fermi clouds are superimposed. We find that the quantum fluctuations stabilize the Bose-Fermi soliton such that the one-dimensional bright soliton exists for any finite attractive Bose-Fermi scattering length. We study density profile and collective excitations of the atomic bright soliton showing that they depend on the bosonic regime involved: mean-field or Tonks-Gi…
By using the self-consistent Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov-Popov theory, we present a detailed study of the mean-field stability of spherically trapped Bose-Fermi mixtures at finite temperature. We find that, by increasing the temperature, the critical particle number of bosons (or fermions) and the critical attractive Bose-Fermi scattering length increase, leading to a significant stabilization of the mixture.
A nonlinear Schrödinger equation is derived for the dynamics of a beam of ultracold fermionic atoms traversing a Bose-Einstein condensate. The condensate phonon modes are shown to provide a nonlinear medium for the fermionic atoms. A two-fermion bound state is predicted to arise, and the signature of the bound state in a nonlinear atom optics experiment is discussed.
We have produced a macroscopic quantum system in which a Li-6 Fermi sea coexists with a large and stable Na-23 Bose-Einstein condensate. This was accomplished using inter-species sympathetic cooling of fermionic Li-6 in a thermal bath of bosonic Na-23.
We test a non equilibrium approach to study the behavior of a Bose-Fermi mixture of alkali atoms in the presence of a Feshbach resonance between bosons and fermions. To this end we derive the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB) equations of motion for, the interacting system. This approach has proven very successful in the study of resonant systems composed of Bose particles and Fermi particles. However, when applied to a Bose-Fermi mixture, the HFB theory fails to identify even the correct binding energy of molecules in the appropriate limit. Through a more rigorous analysis we are able to ascribe …
We calculate the asymptotic behaviour of correlation functions as a function of the microscopic parameters for a Bose-Fermi mixture with repulsive interaction in one dimension. For two cases, namely polarized and unpolarized fermions the singularities of the momentum distribution functions are characterized as a function of the coupling constant and the relative density of bosons.
We study the phase diagram of a mixture of Bose-Einstein condensate and a two-component Fermi gas. In particular, we identify the regime where the homogeneous system becomes unstable against phase separation. We show that, under proper conditions, the phase separation phenomenon can be exploited as a robust probe of Fermi superfluid.
Studies of trapped quantum gases of bosons and of fermions have opened up a new range of many-body problems, having a strong overlap with nuclear and neutron star physics. Topics discussed here include: the Bose yrast problem -- how many-particle Bose systems carry extreme amounts of angular momentum; the infrared divergent structure of the transition to Bose condensation in a weakly interacting system; and the physics of extremely strongly interacting Bose and Fermi systems, in the scale-free regime where the two body s-wave scattering lengths are large compared with the interparticle spacing…
We consider two-dimensional imperfect attractive Fermi and repulsive Bose gases consisting of spinless point particles whose total interparticle interaction energy is represented by $a N^2/2 V$ with $a=-a_{F}\leq 0$ for fermions, and $a=a_{B}\geq 0$ for bosons. We show that in spite of the attraction the thermodynamics of $d=2$ imperfect Fermi gas remains well defined for $0 \leq a_{F}\leq a_{0}=h^2/2πm$, and is exactly the same as the one of the repulsive imperfect Bose gas with $a_{B}=a_{0}-a_{F}$. In particular, for $a_{F}=a_{0}$ one observes the thermodynamic equivalence of the attractive …
Recent progress in the field of ultracold gases has allowed the creation of phase-segregated Bose-Fermi systems. We present a theoretical study of their collective excitations at zero temperature. As the fraction of fermion to boson particle number increases, the collective mode frequencies take values between those for a fully bosonic and those for a fully fermionic cloud, with damping in the intermediate region. This damping is caused by fermions which are resonantly driven at the interface.
A collapse of the trapped boson- fermion mixture with the attraction between bosons and fermions is investigated in the framework of the effective Hamiltonian for the Bose system. The properties of the $^{87}$Rb and $^{40}$K mixture are analyzed quantitatively at $T= 0$. We find numerically solutions of modified Gross- Pitaevskii equation which continuously go from stable to unstable branch. We discuss the relation of the onset of collapse with macroscopic properties of the system. A comparison with the case of a Bose condensate of atomic $^7Li$ system is given.
One-dimensional Bose gases are considered, interacting either through the hard-core potentials or through the contact delta potentials. Interest in these gases gained momentum because of the recent experimental realization of quasi-one-dimensional Bose gases in traps with tightly confined radial motion, achieving the Tonks-Girardeau (TG) regime of strongly interacting atoms. For such gases the Fermi-Bose mapping of wavefunctions is applicable. The aim of the present communication is to give a brief survey of the problem and to demonstrate the generality of this mapping by emphasizing that: (i)…
The study of low density, ultracold atomic Fermi gases is a promising avenue to understand fermion superfluidity from first principles. One technique currently used to bring Fermi gases in the degenerate regime is sympathetic cooling through a reservoir made of an ultracold Bose gas. We discuss a proposal for trapping and cooling of two-species Fermi-Bose mixtures into optical dipole traps made from combinations of laser beams having two different wavelengths. In these bichromatic traps it is possible, by a proper choice of the relative laser powers, to selectively trap the two species in such…
The structure of 29-dimensional extended real Clifford-Dirac algebra, which has been introduced in our paper Phys. Lett. A, 2011, 375, 2479, is considered in brief. Using this algebra, the property of Fermi-Bose duality of the Dirac equation with nonzero mass is proved. It means that Dirac equation can describe not only the fermionic but also the bosonic states. The proof of our assertion based on the examples of bosonic symmetries, solutions and conservation laws is given. Some statistical aspects of the spinor field Fermi-Bose duality are discussed.
We discuss a sympathetic cooling strategy that can successfully mitigate fermion-hole heating in a dilute atomic Fermi-Bose mixture and access the temperature regime in which the fermions behave as a Fermi liquid. We introduce an energy-based formalism to describe the temperature dynamics with which we study a specific and promising mixture composed of 6Li and 87Rb. Analyzing the harmonically trapped mixture, we find that the favourable features of this mixture are further enhanced by using different trapping frequencies for the two species.
We discuss the effect of a molecular Bose condensate on the energy of Fermi excitations in a trapped two-component atomic Fermi gas. The single-particle Green's functions can be approximated by the well-known BCS form, in both the BCS (Cooper pairs) and BEC (Feshbach resonance molecules) domains. The composite Bose order parameter ${\tilde Δ}$ describing bound states of two atoms and the Fermi chemical potential $μ$ are calculated self-consistently. In the BEC regime characterized by $μ<0$, the Fermi quasiparticle energy gap is given by $\sqrt{μ^2+{\tilde Δ}^2}$, instead of $|{\tilde Δ}|$ in t…
We investigate local quantum field theories for one-dimensional (1D) Bose and Fermi gases with contact interactions, which are closely connected with each other by Girardeau's Bose-Fermi mapping. While the Lagrangian for bosons includes only a two-body interaction, a marginally relevant three-body interaction term is found to be necessary for fermions. Because of this three-body coupling, the three-body contact characterizing a local triad correlation appears in the energy relation for fermions, which is one of the sum rules for a momentum distribution. In addition, we apply in both systems th…
We describe the properties of a mixture of fermionic and bosonic atoms, as they are tuned across a Feshbach resonance associated with a fermionic molecular state. Provided the number of fermionic atoms exceeds the number of bosonic atoms, we argue that there is a critical detuning at which the Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) is completely depleted. The phases on either side of this quantum phase transition can also be distinguished by the distinct Luttinger constraints on their Fermi surfaces. In both phases, the total volume enclosed by all Fermi surfaces is constrained by the total number of …
