We study topological phases of time-reversal invariant singlet superconductors in three spatial dimensions. In these particle-hole symmetric systems the topological phases are characterized by an even-numbered winding number $ν$. At a two-dimensional (2D) surface the topological properties of this quantum state manifest themselves through the presence of $ν$ flavors of gapless Dirac fermion surface states, which are robust against localization from random impurities. We construct a tight-binding model on the diamond lattice that realizes a topologically nontrivial phase, in which the winding number takes the value $ν=\pm 2$. Disorder corresponds to a (non-localizing) random SU(2) gauge potential for the surface Dirac fermions, leading to a power-law density of states $ρ(ε) \sim ε^{1/7}$. The bulk effective field theory is proposed to be the (3+1) dimensional SU(2) Yang-Mills theory with a theta-term at $θ=π$.
We prove that a system of non-interacting electrons proximity coupled to a conventional s-wave superconductor cannot realize a time reversal invariant topological phase. This is done by showing that for such a system, in either one or two dimensions, the topological invariant of the corresponding symmetry class (DIII) is always trivial. Our results suggest that the pursuit of Majorana bound states in time-reversal invariant systems should be aimed at interacting systems or at proximity to unconventional superconductors.
We discuss the topology of the wavefunctions of two-dimensional time-reversal symmetric superconductors. We consider (a) the planar state, (b) a system with broken up-down reflection symmetry, and (c) a system with general spin-orbit interaction. We show explicitly how the relative sign of the order parameter on the two Fermi surfaces affects this topology, and clarify the meaning of the $Z_2$ classification for these topological states.
We address the question of whether individual nonmagnetic impurities can induce zero-energy states in time-reversal-invariant topological superconductors, and define a class of symmetries which guarantee the existence of such states for a specific value of the impurity strength. These symmetries allow the definition of a position-space topological Z_2 invariant, which is related to the standard bulk topological Z_2 invariant. Our general results are applied to the time-reversal-invariant p-wave phase of the doped Kitaev-Heisenberg model, where we demonstrate how a lattice of impurities can dri…
Within a Ginzburg-Landau formalism we establish analytically the necessary and sufficient conditions to realize a doubly degenerate superconducting ground state with broken time-reversal symmetry (BTRS) in a multi-band superconductor. Using these results we analyze the ground state of a three-band superconductor in the cylindrical geometry in an external magnetic field. We show that depending on the interband coupling constants, a magnetic flux can induce current density jumps in such superconducting geometries that are related to adiabatic or non-adiabatic transitions from BTRS to time-revers…
The breaking of time-reversal symmetry in a triplet superconductor Josephson junction is shown to cause a magnetic instability of the tunneling barrier. Using a Ginzburg-Landau analysis of the free energy, we predict that this novel functional behaviour reflects the formation of an exotic Josephson state, distinguished by the existence of fractional flux quanta at the barrier. The crucial role of the orbital pairing state is demonstrated by studying complementary microscopic models of the junction. Signatures of the magnetic instability are found in the critical current of the junction.
The study of non-Abelian Majorana zero modes advances our understanding of the fundamental physics in quantum matter, and pushes the potential applications of such exotic states to topological quantum computation. It has been shown that in two-dimensional (2D) and 1D chiral superconductors, the isolated Majorana fermions obey non-Abelian statistics. However, Majorana modes in a $Z_2$ time-reversal invariant (TRI) topological superconductor come in pairs due to Kramers' theorem. Therefore, braiding operations in TRI superconductors always exchange two pairs of Majoranas. In this work, we show i…
The proximity effect from a spin-triplet $p_x$-wave superconductor to a dirty normal-metal has been shown to result in various unusual electromagnetic properties, reflecting a cooperative relation between topologically protected zero-energy quasiparticles and odd-frequency Cooper pairs. However, because of a lack of candidate materials for spin-triplet $p_x$-wave superconductors, observing this effect has been difficult. In this paper, we demonstrate that the anomalous proximity effect, which is essentially equivalent to that of a spin-triplet $p_x$-wave superconductor, can occur in a semicond…
We develop a theory which describes hybrid structures consisting out of superconducting and ferromagnetic parts. We give two examples for applications. First, we consider a hybrid structure containing a strong ferromagnet in the ballistic limit. Second, we study for a weak ferromagnet the influence of a domain wall on the superconducting proximity effect. In both cases we account quantitatively for the mixing between singlet and triplet correlations.
We report the study of spontaneous magnetization (i.e., spin-polarization) for time-reversal symmetry (TRS)-breaking superconductors with unitary pairing potentials, in the absence of external magnetic fields or Zeeman fields. Spin-singlet ($Δ_s$) and spin-triplet ($Δ_t$) pairings can coexist in superconductors whose crystal structure lacks inversion symmetry. The TRS can be spontaneously broken once a relative phase of $\pmπ/2$ is developed, forming a TRS-breaking unitary pairing state ($Δ_s\pm iΔ_t$). We demonstrate that such unitary pairing could give rise to spontaneous spin-polarization w…
We consider the Hall conductivity due to the motion of a vortex in a lattice-model of a clean superconductor, using a combination of general arguments, unrestricted Hartree-Fock calculations, and exact diagonalization. In the weak coupling limit, $k_F ξ\gg 1$, the sign of the Hall response of the superconducting state is the same as that of the normal (non-superconducting) state. For intermediate and strong coupling, however, ($k_F ξ\sim 1$) we find that the sign of the Hall response in the superconducting state can be opposite to that of the normal state. In addition, we find that the sign re…
The behavior of a dc SQUID, based on a dirty point contacts between a single-band and three-band superconductor with broken time-reversal symmetry is investigated. Using earlier obtained results for Josephson effects in such systems new features in characteristics of a dc SQUID are revealed. It is shown that in the case of a BTRS (broken time-reversal symmetry) three-band superconductor for the applied external magnetic flux, which is divisible by the half-integer flux, strong degeneracy of ground states of a dc SQUID is taken place. This can lead to the appearance of possible multi-hysteresis…
We present results of numerical studies of spin quantum Hall transitions in disordered superconductors, in which the pairing order parameter breaks time-reversal symmetry. We focus mainly on p-wave superconductors in which one of the spin components is conserved. The transport properties of the system are studied by numerically diagonalizing pairing Hamiltonians on a lattice, and by calculating the Chern and Thouless numbers of the quasiparticle states. We find that in the presence of disorder, (spin-)current carrying states exist only at discrete critical energies in the thermodynamic limit, …
We show that the pair of Majorana modes at each end of a 1D spin triplet superconductor with total Cooper pair spin S_x=0 (i.e., Delta_{up,up} = -Delta_{down,down} = p*Delta_0; two uncoupled time reversed copies of the Kitaev p-wave chain) are topologically robust to perturbations such as mixing by the S_z=0 component of the order parameter (Delta_{up,down}=Delta_{down,up}), transverse hopping (in quasi-1D systems), non-magnetic disorder, and also, most importantly, to time reversal breaking perturbations such as applied Zeeman fields/magnetic impurities and the mixing by the S_y=0 component o…
We discuss thermal transport of two-dimensional topological superconductors (TSCs) with broken time reversal symmetry, which are described by Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) Hamiltonians. From the calculations of bulk quantities only, without refereeing to Majorana edge states, we show that the thermal Hall conductivity of two-dimensional TSCs in the low-temperature limit is quantized in multiples of $1/2\frac{πT}{6}$, which is exactly one half of the value of quantization in the case of the integer quantum Hall effect, and that this exact half-quantization is caused by the structure of the Nambu s…
We calculate the spectrum of the Andreev bound states in a one-dimensional superconductor with a strong Rashba spin-orbit coupling. We focus on the fate of the zero-energy Andreev modes in the presence of time reversal symmetry-breaking perturbations, both at the boundary and in the bulk. It is shown that the zero modes are destroyed by time reversal symmetry-breaking fluctuations, even if the mean-field state of the system is time-reversal invariant and topologically nontrivial.
We determine the current-phase relation (CPR) of two-terminal configurations of Josephson junctions containing two-dimensional (2D) time-reversal invariant topological superconductors (TRITOPS), including TRITOPS-TRITOPS, as well as junctions between topological and non-topological superconductors (TRITOPS-S). We focus on long junctions for which several channels intervene in the tunneling coupling through the junction. We present a description of the topological edge modes for different TRITOPS models including $p$-wave pairing and the combination of $s$-wave pairing with spin-orbit coupling.…

We have investigated the proximity effect in superconductor/ferromagnet junctions in a systematic manner to discuss the relationship between the zero-energy peak (ZEP) of the local density of states (LDOS) and spin-triplet odd-frequency pairing. By exactly solving the nonlinear Usadel equations, we have found that the ZEP is realized in a wide range of geometrical and material parameters in the case of the noncollinear magnetization. This strongly suggests the robustness of the ZEP induced by spin-triplet odd-frequency pairing in such systems. We also found that the crossover from singlet pair…
In this work we present a comprehensive study of the spontaneous currents in time-reversal symmetry breaking (TRSB) multi-component superconductors with cubic crystalline symmetry. We argue, not limiting to cubic lattices, that spontaneous current on certain high-symmetry surfaces can exist only if the TRSB pairing simultaneously breaks a certain pair of mirror symmetries. This is shown to have exact correspondence with the Gingzburg-Landau (GL) theory and is verified by numerical Bogoliubov de-Gennes (BdG) calculations. In the course we extend the BdG to include effects of gap anisotropy and …
We propose a setup to realize time-reversal invariant topological superconductors in quantum wires, proximity coupled to conventional superconductors. We consider a model of quantum wire with strong spin-orbit coupling and proximity coupling to two s-wave superconductors. When the relative phase between the two superconductors is $ϕ=π$ a Kramers' pair of Majorana zero modes appears at each edge of the wire. We study the robustness of the phase in presence of both time-reversal invariant and time-reversal breaking perturbations. In addition, we show that the system forms a natural realization o…
Fully gapped two-dimensional superconductors coupled to dynamical electromagnetism are known to exhibit topological order. In this work, we develop a unified low-energy description for spin-singlet paired states by deriving topological Chern-Simons field theories for $s$-wave, $d+id$, and chiral higher even-wave superconductors. These theories capture the quantum statistics and fusion rules of Bogoliubov quasiparticles and vortices and incorporate global continuous symmetries - specifically, spin rotation and conservation of magnetic flux - present in all singlet superconductors. For all such …
We study transport and zero frequency shot noise properties of a normal metal-superconductor-normal metal (NSN) junction, with the superconductor having mixed singlet and chiral triplet pairings. We show that in the subgapped regime when the chiral triplet pairing amplitude dominates over that of the singlet, a resonance phenomena emerges out at zero energy where all the quantum mechanical scattering probabilities acquire a value of 0.25. At the resonance, crossed Andreev reflection mediating through such junction, acquires a zero energy peak. This reflects as a zero energy peak in the conduct…
We show how superconductors can be used to couple, initialize, and read out spatially separated spin qubits. When two single-electron quantum dots are tunnel coupled to the same superconductor, the singlet component of the two-electron state partially leaks into the superconductor via crossed Andreev reflection. This induces a gate-controlled singlet-triplet splitting which, with an appropriate superconductor geometry, remains large for dot separations within the superconducting coherence length. Furthermore, we show that when two double-dot singlet-triplet qubits are tunnel coupled to a super…
The spin polarization (SP) of the ferromagnet (FM) is a quantity of fundamental importance in spintronics. In this work, we propose a quasi-one-dimensional junction structure composed of a FM and a time-reversal invariant topological superconductor (TRITS) with un-spin-polarized pairing type to determine the SP of the FM. We find that due to the topological property of the TRITS, the zero-bias conductance (ZBC) of the FM/TRITS junction which is directly related to the SP is a non-quantized but topological quantity. The ZBC only depends on the parameters of the FM, it is independent of the inte…
We study all the possible different two terminal configurations of Josephson junctions containing wires of time-reversal invariant topological superconductors (TRITOPS) and ordinary superconductors, including combinations with an interacting quantum dot between both wires in the junction. We introduce simple effective Hamiltonians which explain the different qualitative behaviors obtained. We analyze a wide range of phenomena, including occurrence and quenching of the so called $0-π$ transition, anomalous periodicity and jumps of the Josephson current as a function of the phase difference, and…
We find a new class of topological superconductors which possess an emergent time-reversal symmetry that is present only after projecting to an effective low-dimensional model. We show that a topological phase in symmetry class DIII can be realized in a noninteracting system coupled to an $s$-wave superconductor only if the physical time-reversal symmetry of the system is broken, and we provide three general criteria that must be satisfied in order to have such a phase. We also provide an explicit model which realizes the class DIII topological superconductor in 1D. We show that, just as in ti…
We propose tunnel junctions of a Hall bar and a superconducting lead, for observing Cooper-pair tunneling into singlet fractional quantum Hall edge states. These tunnel junctions provide a natural means of extracting precise information of the spin polarization and the filling factor of the state. The low energy regime of one of the set-ups is governed by a novel quantum entangled fixed point.
Time reversal invariant topological superconducting (TRITOPS) wires are known to host a fractional spin hbar/4 at their ends. We investigate how this fractional spin affects the Josephson current in a TRITOPS-quantum dot-TRITOPS Josephson junction, describing the wire in a model which can be tuned between a topological and a nontopological phase. We compute the equilibrium Josephson current of the full model by continuous-time Monte Carlo simulations and interpret the results within an effective low-energy theory. We show that in the topological phase, the 0-to-pi transition is quenched via fo…
We establish quasi-two-dimensional thin films of iron-based superconductors (FeSCs) as a new high-temperature platform for hosting intrinsic time-reversal-invariant helical topological superconductivity (TSC). Based on the combination of Dirac surface state and bulk extended $s$-wave pairing, our theory should be directly applicable to a large class of experimentally established FeSCs, opening a new TSC paradigm. In particular, an applied electric field serves as a "topological switch" for helical Majorana edge modes in FeSC thin films, allowing for an experimentally feasible design of gate-co…
We demonstrate that the one-dimensional helical Majorana edges of two-dimensional time-reversal symmetric topological superconductors (class DIII) can become gapless and insulating by a combination of random edge velocity and interaction. Such a gapless insulating edge breaks time-reversal symmetry inhomogeneously, and the local symmetry broken regions can be regarded as static mass potentials or dynamical Ising spins. In both limits, we find that such glassy Majorana edges are generically exponentially localized and trap Majorana zero modes. Interestingly, for a statistically time-reversal sy…
