Deep HST/ACS photometry of the young cluster NGC 602, located in the remote low density "wing" of the Small Magellanic Cloud, reveals numerous pre-main sequence stars as well as young stars on the main sequence. The resolved stellar content thus provides a basis for studying the star formation history into recent times and constraining several stellar population properties, such as the present day mass function, the initial mass function and the binary fraction. To better characterize the pre-main sequence population, we present a new set of model stellar evolutionary tracks for this evolutionary phase with metallicity appropriate for the Small Magellanic Cloud (Z = 0.004). We use a stellar population synthesis code, which takes into account a full range of stellar evolution phases to derive our best estimate for the star formation history in the region by comparing observed and synthetic color-magnitude diagrams. The derived present day mass function for NGC 602 is consistent with that resulting from the synthetic diagrams. The star formation rate in the region has increased with time on a scale of tens of Myr, reaching $0.3-0.7 \times 10^{-3} M_\odot yr^{-1}$ in the last 2.5 Myr, comparable to what is found in Galactic OB associations. Star formation is most complete in the main cluster but continues at moderate levels in the gas-rich periphery of the nebula.
The supergiant ionized shell SMC-SGS 1 (DEM 167), located in the outer Wing of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), resembles structures that originate from an energetic star-formation event and later stimulate star formation as they expand into the ambient medium. However, stellar populations within and surrounding SMC-SGS 1 tell a different story. We present a photometric study of the stellar population encompassed by SMC-SGS 1 in order to trace the history of this structure and its potential influence on star formation within the low-density, low-metallicity SMC Wing. For a stellar population …
The rich SMC star cluster NGC419 has recently been found to present both a broad main sequence turn-off and a dual red clump of giants, in the sharp colour-magnitude diagrams (CMD) derived from the High Resolution Channel of the Advanced Camera for Surveys on board the Hubble Space Telescope. In this work, we apply to the NGC419 data the classical method of star formation history (SFH) recovery via CMD reconstruction, deriving for the first time this function for a star cluster with multiple turn-offs. The values for the cluster metallicity, reddening, distance and binary fraction, were varied…
We observed six fields of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) with the Advanced Camera for Survey on board the Hubble Space Telescope in the F555W and F814W filters. These fields sample regions characterized by very different star and gas densities, and, possibly, by different evolutionary histories. We find that the SMC was already forming stars ~12 Gyr ago, even if the lack of a clear horizontal branch suggests that in the first few billion years the star formation activity was low. Within the uncertainties of our two-band photometry, we find evidence of a radial variation in chemical enrichmen…
We derive the star formation history in four regions of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) using the deepest VI color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) ever obtained for this galaxy. The images were obtained with the Advanced Camera for Surveys onboard the Hubble Space Telescope and are located at projected distances of 0.5-2 degrees from the SMC center, probing the main body and the wing of the galaxy. We derived the star-formation histories (SFH) of the four fields using two independent procedures to fit synthetic CMDs to the data. We compare the SFHs derived here with our earlier results for the SMC …
In this paper, we study the age and spatial distributions of Cepheids in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) as a function of their ages using the data from the OGLE III photometric catalogue. A period-age (PA) relation derived for the Classical Cepheids in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) has been used to find the ages of Cepheids. The age distribution of the SMC Classical Cepheids is found to have a peak at log(Age) = 8.40+/-0.10 which suggests that a major star formation event might have occurred in the SMC at about 250+/-50 Myrs ago. It is believed that this star forming burst had been trigge…
Stars which start their lives with spectral types O and early-B are the progenitors of core-collapse supernovae, long gamma-ray bursts, neutron stars, and black holes. These massive stars are the primary sources of stellar feedback in star-forming galaxies. At low metallicities, the properties of massive stars and their evolution are not yet fully explored. Here we report a spectroscopic study of 320 OB stars in the Small Magellanic Cloud. The data, which we obtained with the ESO Very Large Telescope, were analyzed using state-of-the-art stellar atmosphere models. We find that stellar winds of…
In this paper we discuss the age and spatial distribution of young (age$<$1Gyr) SMC and LMC clusters using data from the Magellanic Cloud Photometric Surveys. Luminosities are calculated for all age-dated clusters. Ages of 324 and 1193 populous star clusters in the Small and the Large Magellanic Cloud have been determined fitting Padova and Geneva isochrone models to their resolved color-magnitude diagrams. The clusters cover an age range between 10Myr and 1Gyr in each galaxy. For the SMC a constant distance modulus of $(m-M)_0$ = 18.90 and a metallicity of Z = 0.004 were adopted. For the LMC,…
We present the first reconstruction of the star formation history (SFH) of the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds (LMC and SMC) using Long Period Variable stars. These cool evolved stars reach their peak luminosity in the near-infrared; thus, their K-band magnitudes can be used to derive their birth mass and age, and hence the SFH can be obtained. In the LMC, we found a 10-Gyr old single star formation epoch at a rate of $\sim1.5$ M$_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$, followed by a relatively continuous SFR of $\sim0.2$ M$_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$, globally. In the core of the LMC (LMC bar), a secondary, distinct episo…
Multiple generations of massive stars have lived and died during Cosmic History, invigorating host galaxies with ionizing photons, kinetic energy, fresh material and stellar-size black holes. At present, massive stars in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) serve as templates for low-metallicity objects in the early Universe. However, recent results have highlighted important differences in the evolution, death and feedback of massive stars with poorer metal content that better matches the extremely low metallicity of previous Cosmic epochs. This paper proposes to supersede the SMC standard with a…
Bound orbits have traditionally been assigned to the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds (LMC and SMC, respectively) in order to provide a formation scenario for the Magellanic Stream (MS) and its Leading Arm (LA), two prominent neutral hydrogen (HI) features connected to the LMC and SMC. However, Hubble Space Telescope (HST) measurements of the proper motions of the LMC and SMC have challenged the plausibility of bound orbits, causing the origin of the MS to re-emerge as a contested issue. We present a new tidal model in which structures resembling the bifurcated MS and elongated LA are able to…
We recover the spatially resolved star formation history across the entire main body and Wing of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), using fourteen deep tile images from the VISTA survey of the Magellanic Clouds (VMC), in the YJKs filters. The analysis is performed on 168 subregions of size 0.143 deg2, covering a total contiguous area of 23.57 deg2. We apply a colour-magnitude diagram (CMD) reconstruction method that returns the best-fitting star formation rate SFR(t), age--metallicity relation, distance and mean reddening, together with their confidence intervals, for each subregion. With respe…
When measuring star formation rates using ultraviolet light, correcting for dust extinction is a critical step. However, with the variety of dust extinction curves to choose from, the extinction correction is quite uncertain. Here, we use Swift/UVOT to measure the extinction curve for star-forming regions in the SMC and M33. We find that both the slope of the curve and the strength of the 2175 Angstrom bump vary across both galaxies. In addition, as part of our modeling, we derive a detailed recent star formation history for each galaxy.
We use the SMASH survey to obtain unprecedented deep photometry reaching down to the oldest main sequence turn-offs in the colour-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) and quantitatively derive its star formation history (SFH) using CMD fitting techniques. We identify five distinctive peaks of star formation in the last 3.5 Gyr, at $\sim $3, $\sim$2, $\sim$1.1, $\sim $0.45 Gyr ago, and one presently. We compare these to the SFH of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) finding unequivocal synchronicity, with both galaxies displaying similar periods of enhanced star formation …

UVIT Study of the MAgellanic Clouds (U-SMAC) I. Recent star formation history and kinematics of the Shell region in the North-Eastern Small Magellanic Cloud
We present the first results from the Swift Ultraviolet Survey of the Magellanic Clouds (SUMaC), the highest resolution ultraviolet (UV) survey of the Magellanic Clouds yet completed. In this paper, we focus on the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). When combined with multi-wavelength optical and infrared observations, the three near-UV filters on the Swift Ultraviolet/Optical Telescope are conducive to measuring the shape of the dust extinction curve and the strength of the 2175Å dust bump. We divide the SMC into UV-detected star-forming regions and large 200" (58~pc) pixels and then model the spe…
The formation history of the Small Magellanic cloud (SMC) is unraveled based on the results of our new chemical evolution models constructed for the SMC, highlighting the observed anomaly in the age-metallicity relation for star clusters in the SMC. We first propose that evidence of a major merger is imprinted in the age-metallicity relation as a dip in [Fe/H]. Our models predict that the major merger with a mass ratio of 1:1 to 1:4 occurred at ~7.5 Gyr ago, with a good reproduction of the abundance distribution function of field stars in the SMC. Furthermore, our models predict a relatively l…
We present HK spectra of three sources located in the N66 region of the Small Magellanic Cloud. The sources display prominent stellar Br Gamma and extended H2 emission, and exhibit infrared excesses at lambda > 2 micron. Based on their spectral features, and photometric spectral energy distributions, we suggest that these sources are massive young stellar objects (mYSOs). The findings are interpreted as evidence of on-going high mass star formation in N66.
We set out to compare the age-metallicity relation (AMR) of massive clusters from Magellanic Cloud mass galaxies in the E-MOSAICS suite of numerical cosmological simulations with an amalgamation of observational data of massive clusters in the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds (LMC/SMC). We aim to test if: i) star cluster formation proceeds according to universal physical processes, suggestive of a common formation mechanism for young-massive clusters (YMCs), intermediate-age clusters (IACs), and ancient globular clusters (GCs); ii) massive clusters of all ages trace a continuous AMR; iii) the…
In the present work we investigate the link between high-mass X-ray binaries (HMXBs) and star formation in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), our nearest star-forming galaxy. Using optical photometric data, we identify the most likely counterpart of 44 X-ray sources. Among the 40 HMXBs classified in this work, we find 33 Be/X-ray binaries, and 4 supergiant XRBs. Using this census and the published spatially resolved star-formation history map of the LMC, we find that the HMXBs (and as expected the X-ray pulsars) are present in regions with star-formation bursts $\sim$6-25 Myr ago, in contrast t…
Recent observations have found that the age distribution of star clusters (SCs) in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) shows a sharp peak around 2 Gyr ago. However, it is theoretically unclear what physical processes are responsible for such sudden formation of SCs in the SMC. Here we investigate whether massive SCs with initial masses more than $10^5$ $\text{M}_\odot$ can be formed during tidal interaction of the SMC with the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) about 2 Gyr ago, based on our new simulations, which include molecular hydrogen formation on dust grains and SC formation within giant molecula…
Scylla V: Constraints on the spatial and temporal distribution of bursts and the interaction history of the Magellanic Clouds from their resolved stellar populations
The structure of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) is very complex, in particular in the periphery that suffers more from the interactions with the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). A wealth of observational evidence has been accumulated revealing tidal tails and bridges made up of gas, stars and star clusters. Nevertheless, a full picture of the SMC outskirts is only recently starting to emerge with a 6D phase-space map plus age and metallicity using star clusters as tracers. In this work, we continue our analysis of another outer region of the SMC, the so-called West Halo, and combined it with th…
We present a quantitative analysis of the SFH of 12 fields in the SMC. We find that there are four main periods of enhancement of star formation: a young one peaked at around 0.2-0.5 Gyr old, only present in the eastern and in the central-most fields; two at intermediate ages present in all fields (a conspicuous one peaked at 4-5 Gyr old, and a less significant one peaked at 1.5-2.5); and an old one, peaked at 10 Gyr in all fields but the western ones. In the western fields, this old enhancement splits into two, one peaked at around 8 Gyr old and another at around 12 Gyr old. This "two-enhance…
Scenarios that invoke multiple episodes of star formation within young globular clusters (GCs) to explain the observed chemical and photometric anomalies in GCs, require that clusters can retain the stellar ejecta of the stars within them and accrete large amounts of gas from their surroundings. Hence, it should be possible to find young massive clusters in the local Universe that contain significant amounts ($>10$\%) of the cluster mass of gas and/or dust within them. Recent theoretical studies have suggested that clusters in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) with masses in excess of $10^4$\ms…
We analyse deep images from the VISTA survey of the Magellanic Clouds in the YJKs filters, covering 14 sqrdeg (10 tiles), split into 120 subregions, and comprising the main body and Wing of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). We apply a colour--magnitude diagram reconstruction method that returns their best-fitting star formation rate SFR(t), age-metallicity relation (AMR), distance and mean reddening, together with 68% confidence intervals. The distance data can be approximated by a plane tilted in the East-West direction with a mean inclination of 39 deg, although deviations of up to 3 kpc sug…
In the present study, we examine reddening distribution across the LMC and SMC through largest data on Classical Cepheids provided by the OGLE Phase IV survey. The V and I band photometric data of 2476 fundamental mode (FU) and 1775 first overtone mode (FO) Cepheids in the LMC and 2753 FU and 1793 FO Cepheids in the SMC are analyzed for their Period-Luminosity (P-L) relations. We convert period of FO Cepheids to corresponding period of FU Cepheids before combining the two modes of Cepheids. The reddening analysis is performed on 133 segments covering a total area of about 154.6 deg^2 in the LM…
We present the Runaways and Isolated O-Type Star Spectroscopic Survey of the SMC (RIOTS4), a spatially complete survey of uniformly selected field OB stars that covers the entire star-forming body of the SMC. Using the IMACS multislit spectrograph and MIKE echelle spectrograph on the Magellan telescopes, we obtained spectra of 374 early-type field stars that are at least 28 pc from any other OB candidates. We also obtained spectra of an additional 23 field stars in the SMC bar identified from slightly different photometric criteria. Here, we present the observational catalog of stars in the RI…
NGC 602 is a young, low-metallicity star cluster in the "Wing" of the Small Magellanic Cloud. We reveal the recent evolutionary past of the cluster through analysis of high-resolution ($\sim$0.4 pc) Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array observations of molecular gas in the associated $\textrm{H}\scriptstyle\mathrm{II}$ region N90. We identify 110 molecular clumps ($R <$ 0.8 pc) traced by CO emission, and study the relationship between the clumps and associated young stellar objects (YSOs) and pre-main-sequence (PMS) stars. The clumps have high virial parameters (typical $α_{\rm{vir}} = …
The 3D observed velocities of the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds(LMC and SMC) provide an opportunity to probe the Galactic potential in the outskirt of the Galactic halo. Based on a canonical NFW model of the Galactic potential, Besla et al.(2007) reconstructed LMC and SMC's orbits and suggested that they are currently on their first perigalacticon passage about the Galaxy. Motivated by several recent revisions of the Sun's motion around the Galactic center, we re-examine the LMC's orbital history and show that it depends sensitively on the dark-matter's mass distribution beyond its present…
We present a new study of the spatial distribution and ages of the star clusters in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). To detect and estimate the ages of the star clusters we rely on the new fully-automated method developed by Bitsakis et al. (2017). Our code detects 1319 star clusters in the central 18 deg$^{2}$ of the SMC we surveyed (1108 of which have never been reported before). The age distribution of those clusters suggests enhanced cluster formation around 240 Myr ago. It also implies significant differences in the cluster distribution of the bar with respect to the rest of the galaxy, …
We model the present day, observable, normal radio pulsar population of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). The pulsars are generated with SeBa, a binary population synthesis code that evolves binaries and the constituent stellar objects up to remnant formation and beyond. We define radio pulsars by selecting neutron stars that satisfy a selection of criteria defined by Galactic pulsars, and apply the detection thresholds of previous and future SMC pulsar surveys. The number of synthesised and recovered pulsars are exceptionally sensitive to the assumed star formation history and applied radio lu…
Aim: We aim to estimate the age and reddening parameters of already identified star clusters within the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) in a consistent way using available photometric data, classify them based on their mass and strength, and study their spatio- temporal distribution. Methods: We have used a semi-automated quantitative method, developed in the first paper of this series (Paper I), to estimate the cluster parameters using the V and I band photometric data from the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE) III survey. Results: We estimated parameters of 179 star clusters (17 n…
Context. The interactions between the SMC and LMC created the Magellanic Bridge, a stream of gas and stars pulled out of the SMC towards the LMC about 150 Myr ago. The tidal counterpart of this structure, which should include a trailing arm, has been predicted by models but no compelling observational evidence has confirmed the Counter-Bridge so far. Aims. The main goal of this work is to find the stellar counterpart of the Magellanic Bridge and Counter-Bridge. We use star clusters in the SMC outskirts as they provide 6D phase-space vector, age and metallicity that help characterise the outski…
The periphery of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) can unlock important information regarding galaxy formation and evolution in interacting systems. Here, we present a detailed study of the extended stellar structure of the SMC using deep colour-magnitude diagrams (CMDs), obtained as part of the Survey of the MAgellanic Stellar History (SMASH). Special care was taken in the decontamination of our data from MW foreground stars, including from foreground globular clusters NGC 362 and 47 Tuc. We derived the SMC surface brightness using a ``conservative'' approach from which we calculated the gener…
I revisited the age of the Small Magellanic Cloud cluster HW 42, whose previous estimates differ in more than 6 Gyr, thus challenging the most updated knowledge of the SMC star formation history. I performed an analysis of number stellar density profiles at different brightness levels; carried out a field star decontamination of the cluster color-magnitude diagram; and estimated the cluster fundamental parameters from the minimization of likelihood functions and their uncertainties from standard bootstrap methods. I conclude that HW 42 is a 6.2$^{\rm +1.6}_{\rm -1.3}$ Gyr old ([Fe/H] = -0.89$^…
The expected gravitational wave (GW) signal due to double degenerates (DDs) in the thin Galactic disc is calculated using a Monte Carlo simulation. The number of young close DDs that will contribute observable discrete signals in the frequency range $1.58 - 15.8$ mHz is estimated by comparison with the sensitivity of proposed GW observatories. The present-day DD population is examined as a function of Galactic star-formation history alone. It is shown that the frequency distribution, in particular, is a sensitive function of the Galactic star formation history and could be used to measure the …
The highly-substructured outskirts of the Magellanic Clouds provide ideal locations for studying the complex interaction history between both Clouds and the Milky Way (MW). In this paper, we investigate the origin of a >20$^\circ$ long arm-like feature in the northern outskirts of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) using data from the Magellanic Edges Survey (MagES) and Gaia EDR3. We find that the arm has a similar geometry and metallicity to the nearby outer LMC disk, indicating that it is comprised of perturbed disk material. Whilst the azimuthal velocity and velocity dispersions along the arm…
Investigating star formation requires precise knowledge of the properties of the dense molecular gas. The low metallicity and wide range of star formation activity of the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds make them prime laboratories to study how local physical conditions impact the dense gas reservoirs. The aim of the Dense Gas Survey for the Magellanic Clouds (DeGaS-MC) project is to expand our knowledge of the relation between dense gas properties and star formation activity by targeting the LMC and SMC observed in the HCO+(2-1) and HCN(2-1) transitions. We carried out a pointing survey tow…
(ABRIDGED) The evolution and structure of the Magellanic Clouds is presently under debate. The classical scenario where both the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds (LMC, SMC) are orbiting the Milky Way has been challenged by an alternative where the LMC and SMC are in their first close passage to our Galaxy. Detailed studies of stellar populations in the galaxies should constrain the proposed scenarios. In particular, the west halo of the SMC was recently characterized with radial trends in age and metallicity which indicates tidal disruption. We increase the sample of star clusters in the west…
We present an N-body model that reproduces the morphology and kinematics of the Magellanic Stream (MS), a vast neutral hydrogen (HI) structure that trails behind the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds (LMC and SMC, respectively) in their orbit about the Milky Way. After investigating 8 million possible orbits consistent with the latest proper motions, we adopt an orbital history in which the LMC and SMC have only recently become a strongly interacting binary pair. We find that their first close encounter 2 Gyr ago provides the necessary tidal forces to disrupt the disk of the SMC and thereby cr…
The NGC 346 young stellar system and associated N66 giant HII region in the Small Magellanic Cloud are the nearest example of a massive star forming event in a low metallicity ($Z\approx0.2Z_{\odot}$) galaxy. With an age of $\lesssim$3Myr this system provides a unique opportunity to study relationships between massive stars and their associated HII region. Using archival data, we derive a total H$α$ luminosity of L(H$α$)=4.1$\times$10$^{38}$ergs$^{-1}$ corresponding to an H-photoionization rate of 3$\times$10$^{50}$s$^{-1}$. A comparison with a predicted stellar ionization rate derived from th…
