We evaluate longitudinal resistive wakefields for cylindrical beam pipes numerically and compare the results with existing approximate formulæ. We consider an ultra-relativistic bunch traversing a cylindrical, metallic tube for a model in which the wall conductivity is taken to be first independent and second dependent on frequency, and we show how these can be included simply and efficiently in particle tracking simulations. We also extend this to higher order modes, and to the transverse wakes. This full treatment can be necessary in the design of modern nano-beam accelerators.
In LCLS-II, after acceleration and compression and just before entering the undulator, the beam passes through 2.5 km of 24.5 mm (radius) stainless steel pipe. The bunch that passes through the pipe is extremely short---with an rms of 8 um for the nominal 100 pC case. Thus, even though the pipe has a large aperture, the wake that applies is the {\it short-range} resistive wall wakefield. The bunch distribution is approximately uniform, and therefore the wake induced voltage is characterized by a rather linear voltage chirp. It turns out that the wake supplies needed dechirping to the LCLS-II b…
An electron beam passing through a tube which is lined on the inside with a dielectric layer will radiate energy in the THz range due to the interaction with the boundary. The resonant enhancement of certain frequencies is conditioned by structure parameters as tube radius and permittivity of the dielectric layer. In low loss structures narrow-band radiation is generated which can be coupled out by suitable antennas. For higher frequencies the coupling to the resistive outer metal layer becomes increasingly important. The losses in the outer layer prohibit to reach high frequencies with narrow…
Transverse instability of a bunched beam is investigated with synchrotron oscillations, space charge, and resistive wall wakefield taken into account. Boxcar model is used for all-round analysis, and Gaussian distribution is invoked for details. The beam spectrum, instability growth rate and effects of chromaticity are studied in a wide range of parameters, both with head-tail and collective bunch interactions included. Effects of the internal bunch oscillations on the of collective instabilities is investigated thoroughly. Landau damping caused by the space charge tune spread is discussed, an…
During the course of the last decade, traveling wave accelerating structures for a future Linear Collider have been the object of intense R&D efforts. An important problem is the efficient computation of the long range wakefield with the ability to include small alignment and tuning errors. To that end, SLAC has developed an RF circuit model with a demonstrated ability to reproduce experimentally measured wakefields. The wakefield computation involves the repeated solution of a deterministic system of equations over a range of frequencies. By taking maximum advantage of the sparsity of the equ…
We investigate the effect of wall roughness on the wakefield-induced energy variation in the undulator beam pipe of LCLS-II. We find that a wall roughness equivalent to an rms surface slope of 30 mr increases the total induced energy variation within the bunch (due to the resistive wall wake) by a modest 20%.
The progress of a multiple bunches of electrons through several thousand accelerator structures results in a wakefield which if left unchecked will kick successive bunches off the axis of the accelerator and can at the very least dilute the final luminosity of the final colliding beams, or at worst can lead to a BBU (Beam Break Up) instability. In order to damp the wakefields to acceptable levels for travelling wave structures we detune the frequencies of the cells and we couple out the field to four adjacent manifolds. Optimizing the manifold-cell coupling for several hundred cells and changi…
Electron beams of linear induction accelerators experience deflective forces caused by RF fields building up as a result of accelerating cavities of finite size. These forces can significantly effect the beam when a long linac composed of identical cells is assembled. Recent techniques in computational modeling, simulation, and experiments for 20 MeV DARHT-II (Dual Axis Radiographic Hydrodynamic Test) accelerator cells were found to reduce the wakefield impedance of the cells from 800 ohms/meter to 350 ohms/meter and experimental results confirm the results of the modeling efforts. Increased p…
We consider the calculation of electromagnetic fields generated by an electron bunch passing through a vacuum chamber structure that, in general, consists of an entry pipe, followed by some kind of transition or cavity, and ending in an exit pipe. We limit our study to structures having rectangular cross-section, where the height can vary as function of longitudinal coordinate but the width and side walls remain fixed. For such structures, we derive a Fourier representation of the wake potentials through one-dimensional functions. A new numerical approach for calculating the wakes in such stru…
In this paper we report on a high-order fast method to numerically calculate wakefield forces in an electron beam given a wake function model. This method is based on a Newton-Cotes quadrature rule for integral approximation and an FFT method for discrete summation that results in an $O(Nlog(N))$ computational cost, where $N$ is the number of grid points. Using the Simpson quadrature rule with an accuracy of $O(h^4)$, where $h$ is the grid size, we present numerical calculation of the wakefields from a resonator wake function model and from a one-dimensional coherent synchrotron radiation (CSR…

Particle accelerators support a wide array of scientific, industrial, and medical applications. To meet the needs of these applications, accelerator physicists rely heavily on detailed simulations of the complicated particle beam dynamics through the accelerator. One of the most computationally expensive and difficult-to-model effects is the impact of Coherent Synchrotron Radiation (CSR). As a beam travels through a curved trajectory (e.g. due to a bending magnet), it emits radiation that in turn interacts with the rest of the beam. At each step through the trajectory, the electromagnetic fiel…
We study coherent synchrotron radiation (CSR) in a perfectly conducting vacuum chamber of rectangular cross section, in a formalism allowing an arbitrary sequence of bends and straight sections. We apply the paraxial method in the frequency domain, with a Fourier development in the vertical coordinate but with no other mode expansions. A line charge source is handled numerically by a new method that rids the equations of singularities through a change of dependent variable. The resulting algorithm is fast compared to earlier methods, works for short bunches with complicated structure, and yiel…
Unprecedented $\rm TeVm^{-1}$ acceleration gradients are modeled to be realizable using a nonlinear surface crunch-in mode in nanostructured tubes. This mode is realizable using advances in nanofabrication and solid energy density attosecond bunch compression. Three dimensional computational and analytical modeling demonstrates GeV energy gain in sub-millimeter long tubes with effective wall densities $n_{\rm t}\sim10^{22-24}\rm cm^{-3}$ and hundreds of nanometer core radius when driven by submicron near solid electron beams, $n_{\rm b}\sim0.05n_{\rm t}$. Besides the many $\rm TVm^{-1}$ averag…
The demands on performance of advanced linear accelerator based facilities strongly depend on the quality of the particle beams produced by such machines. Indeed, state-of-the-art applications in photon production and high-energy physics colliders require to use very high brightness electron beams, implying the coexistence of high peak currents and small transverse emittances. In such systems, the nominal phase-space density may be diluted by the presence of self-induced electromagnetic fields, causing interaction among charged particles through space charge forces and the excitation of wakefi…
In the blowout regime of plasma wakefield acceleration (PWFA), which is the most relevant configuration for current and future applications and experiments, the plasma flow that is excited by the ultra-relativistic drive beam is highly nonlinear. Thus, fast and accurate simulations codes are indispensable tools in the study of this extremely important problem. We have developed a novel algorithm that deals with the propagation of axisymmetric bunches of otherwise arbitrary profile through a cold plasma of uniform density. In contrast to the existing PWFA simulation tools, our code PLEBS (PLasm…
