This paper considers a multi-user single-relay wireless network, where the relay gets paid for helping the users forward signals, and the users pay to receive the relay service. We study the relay power allocation and pricing problems, and model the interaction between the users and the relay as a two-level Stackelberg game. In this game, the relay, modeled as the service provider and the leader of the game, sets the relay price to maximize its revenue; while the users are modeled as customers and the followers who buy power from the relay for higher transmission rates. We use a bargaining gam…
In this paper, we propose an optimal relay power allocation of an Amplify-and-Forward relay networks with non-linear power amplifiers. Based on Bussgang Linearization Theory, we depict the non-linear amplifying process into a linear system, which lets analyzing system performance easier. To obtain spatial diversity, we design a complete practical framework of a non-linear distortion aware receiver. Consider a total relay power constraint, we propose an optimal power allocation scheme to maximum the receiver signal-to-noise ratio. Simulation results show that proposed optimal relay power alloca…
In this paper, achievable rates and optimal resource allocation strategies for imperfectly-known fading relay channels are studied. It is assumed that communication starts with the network training phase in which the receivers estimate the fading coefficients of their respective channels. In the data transmission phase, amplify-and-forward and decode-and-forward relaying schemes with different degrees of cooperation are considered, and the corresponding achievable rate expressions are obtained. Three resource allocation problems are addressed: 1) power allocation between data and training symb…
This paper considers the design of relay assisted F/TDMA ad hoc networks with multiple relay nodes each of which assists the transmission of a predefined subset of source nodes to their respective destinations. Considering the sum capacity as the performance metric, we solve the problem of optimally allocating the total power of each relay node between the transmissions it is assisting. We consider four different relay transmission strategies, namely regenerative decode-and-forward (RDF), nonregenerative decode-and-forward (NDF), amplify-and-forward (AF) and compress-and-forward (CF). We first…
Considering two-hop cooperative communication with buffered half-duplex relays, this work jointly optimizes relay selection and transmit power at the relay to maximize the sum-throughput of the network subject to a minimum throughput requirement of each hop and transmit power constraint. The optimization problem is solved and two new buffer aware selection schemes, namely joint relay power allocation and selection scheme (JPASS) and ratio selection scheme (RSS) are proposed. Numerical results show that the average sum-throughput of both the proposed schemes is up to 40% higher compared to the …
Energy harvesting (EH) nodes can play an important role in cooperative communication systems which do not have a continuous power supply. In this paper, we consider the optimization of conventional and buffer-aided link adaptive EH relaying systems, where an EH source communicates with the destination via an EH decode-and-forward relay. In conventional relaying, source and relay transmit signals in consecutive time slots whereas in buffer-aided link adaptive relaying, the state of the source-relay and relay-destination channels determines whether the source or the relay is selected for transmi…
This study considers an orthogonal frequency-division multiple-access (OFDMA)-based multi-user two-way relay network where multiple mobile stations (MSs) communicate with a common base station (BS) via multiple relay stations (RSs). We study the joint optimization problem of subcarrier-pairing based relay-power allocation, relay selection, and subcarrier assignment. The problem is formulated as a mixed integer programming problem. By using the dual method, we propose an efficient algorithm to solve the problem in an asymptotically optimal manner. Simulation results show that the proposed metho…
In this paper, achievable rates of imperfectly-known fading relay channels are studied. It is assumed that communication starts with the network training phase in which the receivers estimate the fading coefficients of their respective channels. In the data transmission phase, amplify-and-forward and decode-and-forward relaying schemes are considered, and the corresponding achievable rate expressions are obtained. The achievable rate expressions are then employed to identify the optimal resource allocation strategies.
As a basic information-theoretic model for fading relay channels, the parallel relay channel is first studied, for which lower and upper bounds on the capacity are derived. For the parallel relay channel with degraded subchannels, the capacity is established, and is further demonstrated via the Gaussian case, for which the synchronized and asynchronized capacities are obtained. The capacity achieving power allocation at the source and relay nodes among the subchannels is characterized. The fading relay channel is then studied, for which resource allocations that maximize the achievable rates a…
In this paper, we study relay selection and power allocation in two-way relaying networks consisting of a source, a destination and multiply half-duplex decode-and-forward (DF) relays. A transmission model with three time subslots is purposely introduced. In the first subslot, selected relay applies time-switching protocol to harvest radio frequency energy radiated by source and destination; in the remaining subslots, selected relay facilitates source and destination to exchange information. Due to finite-size data buffer and finite-size battery of relay, an optimal relay selection and power a…
In this paper, for a fading decode-and-forward full-duplex relay channel, we analytically derive optimum power allocations. Individual power constraints for the source and the relay are assumed and the related optimization problem is analyzed for two scenarios. First, optimization is taken over the source power, the relay power, and the correlation coefficient between the transmitted signals of the source and the relay. Then, for a fixed value of correlation coefficient, the optimization problem is analyzed. It is also proven that the optimization problems are convex for these two scenarios. F…
We consider a source-destination pair assisted by parallel regenerative decode-and-forward relays operating in orthogonal channels. We investigate distributed power allocation strategies for this system with limited channel state information at the source and the relay nodes. We first propose a distributed decision mechanism for each relay to individually make its decision on whether to forward the source data. The decision mechanism calls for each relay that is able to decode the information from the source to compare its relay-to-destination channel gain with a given threshold. We identify t…
In this paper, we study power allocation strategies for a fixed-gain amplify-and-forward relay network employing multiple relays. We consider two optimization problems for the relay network: 1) optimal power allocation to maximize the end-to-end signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and 2) minimizing the total consumed power while maintaining the end-to-end SNR over a threshold value. We investigate these two problems for two relaying protocols of all-participate relaying and selective relaying and multiple cases of available channel state information (CSI) at the relays. We show that the SNR maximizati…
This paper investigates the relay assignment and power allocation problem for two different network power management policies: group lifetime maximization (GLM) and minimum weighted total power (MWTP), with the aim of lifetime maximization in symbol error rate (SER) constrained multipleuser cooperative network. With optimal power allocation solution obtained for each policy, we show that the optimal relay assignment can be obtained using bottleneck matching (BM) algorithm and minimum weighted matching (MWM) algorithm for GLM and MWTP policies, respectively. Since relay assignment with BM algor…
Resource allocation is considered for cooperative transmissions in multiple-relay wireless networks. Two auction mechanisms, SNR auctions and power auctions, are proposed to distributively coordinate the allocation of power among multiple relays. In the SNR auction, a user chooses the relay with the lowest weighted price. In the power auction, a user may choose to use multiple relays simultaneously, depending on the network topology and the relays' prices. Sufficient conditions for the existence (in both auctions) and uniqueness (in the SNR auction) of the Nash equilibrium are given. The fairn…
In the relay based telecommunications with $K$ relays between the source and destination, $K+1$ time or frequency slots are required for a single frame transmission. However, without the relays, only one time or frequency slot is used for a single frame transmission. Therefore, despite the benefits of relaying systems, this type of communications is not efficient from the spectral efficiency viewpoint. One solution to reduce this issue might be the full-duplex (FD) relays. An old technique which is reconsidered recently to improve the spectral efficiency of telecommunication systems. However, …
We consider a wireless relay network with one source, one relay and one destination, where communications between nodes are preformed via N orthogonal channels. This, for example, is the case when orthogonal frequency division multiplexing is employed for data communications. Since the power available at the source and relay is limited, we study optimal power allocation strategies at the source and relay in order to maximize the overall source-destination capacity under individual power constraints at the source and/or the relay. Depending on the availability of the channel state information a…
We consider a system with a single base station communicating with multiple users over orthogonal channels while being assisted by multiple relays. Several recent works have suggested that, in such a scenario, selection, i.e., a single relay helping the source, is the best relaying option in terms of the resulting complexity and overhead. However, in a multiuser setting, optimal relay assignment is a combinatorial problem. In this paper, we formulate a related convex optimization problem that provides an extremely tight upper bound on performance and show that selection is, almost always, inhe…
In relay assisted wireless communications, the multi-source, single relay and single destination system (an $M$-1-1 system) is of growing importance, due to the increased demand for higher network throughput and connectivity. Previously, power allocation in $M$-1-1 systems have assumed availability of instantaneous channel state information (CSI), which is rather idealistic. In this paper we consider an $M$-1-1 Decode-and-Forward (DF), Full-Duplex, orthogonal frequencey division multiple access (OFDMA) based relay system with statistical-CSI and analyze the achievable rate $R$ of such a system…
The problem of power allocation is studied for a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) decode-and-forward (DF) two-way relaying system consisting of two source nodes and one relay. It is shown that achieving maximum sum-rate in such a system does not necessarily demand the consumption of all available power at the relay. Instead, the maximum sum-rate can be achieved through efficient power allocation with minimum power consumption. Deriving such power allocation, however, is nontrivial due to the fact that it generally leads to a nonconvex problem. In Part I of this two-part paper, a sum-rate …
Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) networks have grown rapidly in recent years and become attractive for various emergence communications scenarios. In this paper, we consider a UAV acting as a relay node to assist wireless transmissions from a base station (BS) to a ground user (GUs). A closed-form expression of outage probability for the BS-GUs transmission via UAV relaying is derived over Rician fading channels. We then formulate an optimization problem to minimize the outage probability of UAV relay communications with a constraint on the total transit power of the BS and GUs. It is proved that…
In this paper, we address the problem of optimal power allocation at the relay in two-hop secure communications under practical conditions. To guarantee secure communication during the long-distance transmission, the massive MIMO (M-MIMO) relaying techniques are explored to significantly enhance wireless security. The focus of this paper is on the analysis and design of optimal power assignment for a decode-and-forward (DF) M-MIMO relay, so as to maximize the secrecy outage capacity and minimize the interception probability, respectively. Our study reveals the condition for a nonnegative the s…
In this paper, we address the problem of optimal power allocation at the relay in two-hop secure communications. In order to solve the challenging issue of short-distance interception in secure communications, the benefit of large-scale MIMO (LS-MIMO) relaying techniques is exploited to improve the secrecy performance significantly, even in the case without eavesdropper channel state information (CSI). The focus of this paper is on the analysis and design of optimal power allocation for the relay, so as to maximize the secrecy outage capacity. We reveal the condition that the secrecy outage ca…
Joint resource allocation involving optimization of subcarrier allocation, subcarrier pairing (SCP), and power allocation in a cooperative secure orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) communication system with untrusted users is considered. Both amplify and forward (AF), and decode and forward (DF) modes of operations are considered with individual power budget constraints for source and relay. After finding optimal subcarrier allocation for an AF relayed system, we prove the joint power allocation as a generalized convex problem, and solve it optimally. Compared to the convent…
In this paper, we consider a mixed RF and hybrid RF/FSO system where several mobile users transmit their data over an RF link to a relay node (e.g. a small cell base station) and the relay forwards the information to a destination (e.g. a macro cell base station) over a hybrid RF/FSO backhaul link. The relay and the destination employ multiple antennas for transmission and reception over the RF links while each mobile user has a single antenna. The RF links are full-duplex with respect to the FSO link and half-duplex with respect to each other, i.e., either the user-relay RF link or the relay-…
This paper is on relay selection in uplink of an in-band full-duplex (IBFD) cooperative cellular network. Assuming an orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) cellular network, we develop a relay selection and resource allocation algorithm for this network. The relay selection algorithms select the best relay based on distance between users and signal to interference plus noise ratio (SINR) that operate in amplify and forward (AF) mode. The optimization problem allocates the optimum subcarriers and powers to all users to maximize the average sum-rate of the network. In addition, t…
Relaying is an effective technique to achieve reliable wireless connectivity in harsh communication environment. However, most of the existing relaying schemes are based on relays with fixed locations, or \emph{static relaying}. In this paper, we consider a novel \emph{mobile relaying} technique, where the relay nodes are assumed to be capable of moving at high speed. Compared to static relaying, mobile relaying offers a new degree of freedom for performance enhancement via careful relay trajectory design. We study the throughput maximization problem in mobile relaying systems by optimizing th…
The performance of a dual-hop MIMO relay network is studied in this paper. The relay is assumed to have access to the statistical channel state information of its preceding and following channels and it is assumed that fading at the antennas of the relay is correlated. The cumulative density function (cdf) of the received SNR at the destination is first studied and closed-form expressions are derived for the asymptotic cases of the fully-correlated and non-correlated scenarios; moreover, the statistical characteristics of the SNR are further studied and an approximate cdf of the SNR is derived…
In this paper, we address the problem of energy-efficient power allocation for secure communications in an amplify-and-forward (AF) large-scale multiple-input multiple-output (LS-MIMO) relaying system in presence of a passive eavesdropper. The benefits of an AF LS-MIMO relay are exploited to significantly improve the secrecy performance, especially the secrecy energy efficiency (bit per Joule). We first analyze the impact of transmit power at the relay on the secrecy outage capacity, and prove that the secrecy outage capacity is a concave function of transmit power under very practical assumpt…
We present the optimal relay-subset selection and transmission-time for a decode-and-forward, half-duplex cooperative network of arbitrary size. The resource allocation is obtained by maximizing over the rates obtained for each possible subset of active relays, and the unique time allocation for each set can be obtained by solving a linear system of equations. We also present a simple recursive algorithm for the optimization problem which reduces the computational load of finding the required matrix inverses, and reduces the number of required iterations. Our results, in terms of outage rate, …
Wireless systems that carry delay-sensitive information (such as speech and/or video signals) typically transmit with fixed data rates, but may occasionally suffer from transmission outages caused by the random nature of the fading channels. If the transmitter has instantaneous channel state information (CSI) available, it can compensate for a significant portion of these outages by utilizing power allocation. In this paper, we consider optimal power allocation for a conventional dual-hop bidirectional decode-and-forward (DF) relaying system with a three-phase transmission protocol. The propos…
This paper presents a distributed resource allocation algorithm to jointly optimize the power allocation, channel allocation and relay selection for decode-and-forward (DF) relay networks with a large number of sources, relays, and destinations. The well-known dual decomposition technique cannot directly be applied to resolve this problem, because the achievable data rate of DF relaying is not strictly concave, and thus the local resource allocation subproblem may have non-unique solutions. We resolve this non-strict concavity problem by using the idea of the proximal point method, which adds …
In this paper, we consider two-way orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) relay channels, where the direct link between the two terminal nodes is too weak to be used for data transmission. The widely known per-subcarrier decode-and-forward (DF) relay strategy, treats each subcarrier as a separate channel, and performs independent channel coding over each subcarrier. We show that this per-subcarrier DF relay strategy is only a suboptimal DF relay strategy, and present a multi-subcarrier DF relay strategy which utilizes cross-subcarrier channel coding to achieve a larger rate region. …
In this paper, we consider relay-assisted simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) for two-hop cooperative transmission, where a half-duplex multi-antenna relay adopts decode-and-forward (DF) relaying strategy for information forwarding. The relay is assumed to be energy-free and needs to harvest energy from the source node. By embedding power splitting (PS) at each relay antenna to coordinate the received energy and information, joint problem of determining PS ratios and power allocation at the multi-antenna relay node is formulated to maximize the end-to-end achievable ra…
In this paper, we present a new power allocation scheme for a decode-and-forward (DF) relaying-enhanced cooperative wireless system. While both source and relay nodes may have limited traditional brown power supply or fixed green energy storage, the hybrid source node can also draw power from the surrounding radio frequency (RF) signals. In particular, we assume a deterministic RF energy harvesting (EH) model under which the signals transmitted by the relay serve as the renewable energy source for the source node. The amount of harvested energy is known for a given transmission power of the fo…
The problem of optimal power allocation among the relays in a two-hop decode-and-forward cooperative relay network with independent Rayleigh fading channels is considered. It is assumed that only the relays that decode the source message correctly contribute in data transmission. Moreover, only the knowledge of statistical channel state information is available. A new simple closed-form expression for the average symbol error probability is derived. Based on this expression, a new power allocation method that minimizes the average symbol error probability and takes into account the constraints…
This paper considers resource allocation to achieve max-min fairness in a selection-based orthogonal frequency division multiplexing network wherein source nodes are assisted by fixed decode-and-forward relays. The joint problem of transmission strategy selection, relay assignment, and power allocation is a combinatorial problem with exponential complexity. To develop effective solutions to these questions, we approach these problems in two stages. The first set of problems assume ideal source-relay channels; this simplification helps illustrate our general methodology and also why our solutio…
In this letter, we propose a power allocation scheme for relayed orthogonal frequency division multiplexing with index modulation (OFDM-IM) systems. The proposed power allocation scheme replies on artificial neural network (ANN) and deep learning to allocate transmit power among various subcarriers at the source and relay nodes. The objective of the power allocation scheme is to minimize the overall transmit power under a set of constraints. Without loss of generality, we assume all subcarriers at source and relay nodes are independently distributed with different statistical distribution para…

This paper considers the joint design of user power allocation and relay beamforming in relaying communications, in which multiple pairs of single-antenna users exchange information with each other via multiple-antenna relays in two time slots. All users transmit their signals to the relays in the first time slot while the relays broadcast the beamformed signals to all users in the second time slot. The aim is to maximize the system's energy efficiency (EE) subject to quality-of-service (QoS) constraints in terms of exchange throughput requirements. The QoS constraints are nonconvex with many …
In this paper, we consider a multi-pair two-way amplify-and-forward relaying system where multiple sources exchange information via a relay node equipped with large-scale antenna arrays. Given that channel estimation is non-ideal, and that the relay employs either maximum-ratio combining/maximum-ratio transmission (MRC/MRT) or zero-forcing reception/zero-forcing transmission (ZFR/ZFT) beamforming, we derive two corresponding closed-form lower bound expressions for the ergodic achievable rate of each pair sources. The closed-form expressions enable us to design an optimal power allocation (OPA)…
In this work, we consider a dual-hop, decode-and-forward network where the relay can operate in full- duplex (FD) or half-duplex (HD) mode. We model the residual self-interference as an additive Gaussian noise with variance proportional to the relay transmit power, and we assume a Gaussian input distribution at the source. Unlike previous work, we assume that the source is only aware of the transmit power distribution adopted by the relay over a given time horizon, but not of the symbols that the relay is currently transmitting. This assumption better reflects the practical situation where the…
In this paper, we investigate joint optimal relay selection and resource allocation under bandwidth exchange (BE) enabled incentivized cooperative forwarding in wireless networks. We consider an autonomous network where N nodes transmit data in the uplink to an access point (AP) / base station (BS). We consider the scenario where each node gets an initial amount (equal, optimal based on direct path or arbitrary) of bandwidth, and uses this bandwidth as a flexible incentive for two hop relaying. We focus on alpha-fair network utility maximization (NUM) and outage reduction in this environment. …
In this paper, we consider a non-orthogonal multiple access cognitive radio network, where a full-duplex multi-antenna relay assists transmission from a base station (BS) to a cognitive far user, whereas, at the same time, the BS transmits to a cognitive near user. Our objective is to enlarge the far-near user rate region by maximizing the rate of the near user under a constraint that the rate of the far user is above a certain threshold. To this end, a non-convex joint optimization problem of relay beamforming and the transmit powers at the BS and cognitive relay is solved as a semi-definite …
In fading channels, power allocation over channel state may bring a rate increment compared to the fixed constant power mode. Such a rate increment is referred to power allocation gain. It is expected that the power allocation gain varies for different relay protocols. In this paper, Decode-and-Forward (DF) and Compress-and-Forward (CF) protocols are considered. We first establish a general framework for relay power allocation of DF and CF over channel state in half-duplex relay channels and present the optimal solution for relay power allocation with auxiliary parameters, respectively. Then, …
In this paper, we study the physical layer security (PLS) problem in the dual hop orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) based wireless communication system. First, we consider a single user single relay system and study a joint power optimization problem at the source and relay subject to individual power constraint at the two nodes. The aim is to maximize the end to end secrecy rate with optimal power allocation over different sub-carriers. Later, we consider a more general multi-user multi-relay scenario. Under high SNR approximation for end to end secrecy rate, an optimization p…
In this paper, we consider the problem of sum rate maximization in a bidirectional relay network with fading. Hereby, user 1 and user 2 communicate with each other only through a relay, i.e., a direct link between user 1 and user 2 is not present. In this network, there exist six possible transmission modes: four point-to-point modes (user 1-to-relay, user 2-to-relay, relay-to-user 1, relay-to-user 2), a multiple access mode (both users to the relay), and a broadcast mode (the relay to both users). Most existing protocols assume a fixed schedule of using a subset of the aforementioned transmis…
Throughput and energy efficiency in 3-way relay channels are studied in this paper. Unlike previous contributions, we consider a circular message exchange. First, an outer bound and achievable sum rate expressions for different relaying protocols are derived for 3-way relay channels. The sum capacity is characterized for certain SNR regimes. Next, leveraging the derived achievable sum rate expressions, cooperative and competitive maximization of the energy efficiency are considered. For the cooperative case, both low-complexity and globally optimal algorithms for joint power allocation at the …
The time-varying feature of wireless channels usually makes the hard delay bound for data transmissions unrealistic to guarantee. In contrast, the statistically-bounded delay with a small violation probability has been widely used for delay quality-of-service (QoS) characterization and evaluation. While existing research mainly focused on the statistical-delay control in single-hop links, in this paper we propose the QoS-driven power-allocation scheme over two-hop wireless relay links to statistically upper-bound the end-to-end delay under the decodeand- forward (DF) relay transmissions. Speci…
In this paper a unified approach for power allocation (PA) problem in multi-hop orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) amplify-and-forward (AF) relaying systems has been developed. In the proposed approach, we consider short and long-term individual and total power constraints at the source and relays, and devise decentralized low complexity PA algorithms when wireless links are subject to channel path-loss and small-scale Rayleigh fading. In particular, aiming at improving the instantaneous rate of multi-hop transmission systems with AF relaying, we develop (i) a near-optimal itera…
This paper presents a novel two-way decode-and-forward (DF) relay strategy for Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) relay networks. This DF relay strategy employs multi-subcarrier joint channel coding to leverage frequency selective fading, and thus can achieve a higher data rate than the conventional per-subcarrier DF relay strategies. We further propose a low-complexity, optimal power allocation strategy to maximize the data rate of the proposed relay strategy. Simulation results suggest that our strategy obtains a substantial gain over the per-subcarrier DF relay strategies, an…
In this paper, we consider a full-duplex (FD) amplify-and-forward (AF) relay system and optimize its power allocation and relay location to minimize the system symbol error rate (SER). We first derive the asymptotic expressions of the outage probability and SER performance by taking into account the residual self interference (RSI) in FD systems. We then formulate the optimization problem based on the minimal SER criterion. Analytical and numerical results show that optimized relay location and power allocation can greatly improve system SER performance, and the performance floor caused by the…
In this letter, the problem of optimal resource power allocation and relay selection for two way relaying cognitive radio networks using half duplex Decode and Forward (DF) and Amplify and Forward (AF) systems are investigated. The primary and secondary networks are assumed to access the spectrum at the same time, so that the interference introduced to the primary network caused by the secondary network should be below a certain interference threshold. In addition, a selection strategy between the AF and DF schemes is applied depending on the achieved secondary sum rate without affecting the q…
To improve the sum-rate (SR) of the dual-hop relay system, a novel two-stage power allocation scheme with non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) is proposed. In this scheme, after the reception of the superposition coded symbol with a power allocation from the source, the relay node forwards a new superposition coded symbol with another power allocation to the destination. By employing the maximum ratio combination (MRC), the destination jointly decodes the information symbols from the source and the relay. Assuming Rayleigh fading channels, closed-form solution of the ergodic SR at high signal…
In this paper, the energy efficiency of multihop relaying over Nakagami-$m$ fading channels is investigated. The "consumption factor" is used as a metric to evaluate the energy efficiency, and it is derived in closed-form for both amplify-and-forward and decode-and-forward relaying. Then, based on the obtained expressions, we propose a power allocation strategy maximizing the consumption factor. In addition, two sub-optimal, low complexity, power allocation algorithms are proposed and analyzed, and the obtained power allocation schemes are compared, in terms of energy efficiency as well as oth…
In this paper, we investigate the joint spectrum sensing and resource allocation problem to maximize throughput capacity of an OFDM-based cognitive radio link with a cognitive relay. By applying a cognitive relay that uses decode and forward (D&F), we achieve more reliable communications, generating less interference (by needing less transmit power) and more diversity gain. In order to account for imperfections in spectrum sensing, the proposed schemes jointly modify energy detector thresholds and allocates transmit powers to all cognitive radio (CR) subcarriers, while simultaneously assigning…
This paper studies a novel mobile relaying technique, where relays of high mobility are employed to assist the communications from source to destination. By exploiting the predictable channel variations introduced by relay mobility, we study the throughput maximization problem in a mobile relaying system via dynamic rate and power allocations at the source and relay. An optimization problem is formulated for a finite time horizon, subject to an information-causality constraint, which results from the data buffering employed at the relay. It is found that the optimal power allocations across th…
In this paper, system design for the multi-input multi-output (MIMO) relay broadcast channel with individual signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) constraints at the mobile stations (MS) is considered. By exploring the structure of downlink (DL) uplink (UL) duality at either the base station (BS) or the relay station (RS), we propose two schemes of joint power allocation and beamforming design at the BS and the RS. The problem of existence of feasible solutions under practical power constraints at the BS and the RS with given SINR targets is considered first. Then the problem of sum p…
In the first part of this paper we have derived achievable transmission rates for the (single-band) interference relay channel (IRC) when the relay implements either the amplify-and-forward, decode-and-forward or estimate-and-forward protocol. Here, we consider wireless networks that can be modeled by a multi-band IRC. We tackle the existence issue of Nash equilibria (NE) in these networks where each information source is assumed to selfishly allocate its power between the available bands in order to maximize its individual transmission rate. Interestingly, it is possible to show that the thre…
We study outage regions for energy-constrained multi-hop and adaptive multi-route networks with an arbitrary number of relay nodes. Optimal power allocation strategies in the sense that outage probability is minimized are derived depending on the distances between the transmit nodes. We further investigate the rate gain of adaptive multi-route and multi-hop over direct transmission. It is shown that a combined strategy of direct transmission and adaptive multi-route outperforms multi-hop for all values of rate R. It can be stated that cooperation strategies are beneficial for low-rate systems …
