Motivated by the recent proliferation of observed astrophysical anomalies, Arkani-Hamed et al. have proposed a model in which dark matter is charged under a non-abelian "dark" gauge symmetry that is broken at ~ 1 GeV. In this paper, we present a survey of concrete models realizing such a scenario, followed by a largely model-independent study of collider phenomenology relevant to the Tevatron and the LHC. We address some model building issues that are easily surmounted to accommodate the astrophysics. While SUSY is not necessary, we argue that it is theoretically well-motivated because the GeV scale is automatically generated. Specifically, we propose a novel mechanism by which mixed D-terms in the dark sector induce either SUSY breaking or a super-Higgs mechanism precisely at a GeV. Furthermore, we elaborate on the original proposal of Arkani-Hamed et al. in which the dark matter acts as a messenger of gauge mediation to the dark sector. In our collider analysis we present cross-sections for dominant production channels and lifetime estimates for primary decay modes. We find that dark gauge bosons can be produced at the Tevatron and the LHC, either through a process analogous to prompt photon production or through a rare Z decay channel. Dark gauge bosons will decay back to the SM via "lepton jets" which typically contain >2 and as many as 8 leptons, significantly improving their discovery potential. Since SUSY decays from the MSSM will eventually cascade down to these lepton jets, the discovery potential for direct electroweak-ino production may also be improved. Exploiting the unique kinematics, we find that it is possible to reconstruct the mass of the MSSM LSP. We also present decay channels with displaced vertices and multiple leptons with partially correlated impact parameters.
We study the possible experimental signatures resulting from a strongly-interacting electroweak sector at $e^-e^-$ colliders, emphasizing the signal enhancement by high beam polarization. We also discuss the unique role for operating the collider in $e^-γ$ mode to produce a heavy isosinglet vector state $ω_T$.
If neutrino masses arise from a TeV-scale minimal Left-Right seesaw model, the ensuing extended Higgs sector with neutral, singly and doubly-charged scalars has a plethora of implications for new Higgs boson searches beyond the Standard Model at future hadron colliders, such as the $\sqrt s=14$ TeV High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC) and the proposed $\sqrt s=100$ TeV collider (FCC-hh or SPPC). In this article, we provide a glimpse of this new physics in the Higgs sector. Our discussion focuses on the minimal non-supersymmetric version of the Left-Right model with high-scale parity …
A dark sector -- a new non-Abelian gauge group Higgsed or confined near the GeV scale -- can be spectacularly probed in low-energy e+e- collisions. A low-mass dark sector can explain the annual modulation signal reported by DAMA/LIBRA and the PAMELA, ATIC, and INTEGRAL observations by generating small mass splittings and new interactions for weak-scale dark matter. Some of these observations may be the first signs of a low-mass dark sector that collider searches can definitively confirm. Production and decay of O(GeV)-mass dark states is mediated by a Higgsed Abelian gauge boson that mixes kin…
We consider Mirror Twin Higgs models in which the breaking of the global symmetry is realized linearly. In this scenario, the radial mode in the Higgs potential is present in the spectrum, and constitutes a second portal between the twin and SM sectors. We show that a study of the properties of this particle at colliders, when combined with precision measurements of the light Higgs, can be used to overdetermine the form of the scalar potential, thereby confirming that it possesses an enhanced global symmetry as dictated by the Twin Higgs mechanism. We find that, although the reach of the LHC f…
We investigate the prospects for detecting a hidden sector at an $e^+ e^-$ collider. The hidden sector is assumed to be composed of invisible particles that carry no charges under the Standard Model gauge interactions, and whose primary interactions with ordinary matter are through the Higgs portal. We consider both the cases when the decays of an on-shell Higgs into a pair of hidden sector particles are kinematically allowed, and the case when such decays are kinematically forbidden. We find that at collider energies below a TeV, the most sensitive channel involves production of an on-shell o…
We investigate the reach of the LHC Run 2 and that of a future circular hadron collider with up to 100 TeV centre of mass energy for the exploration of potential Dark Matter sectors. These dark sectors are conveniently and broadly described by simplified models. The simplified models we consider provide microscopic descriptions of interactions between the Standard Model partons and the dark sector particles mediated by the four basic types of messenger fields: scalar, pseudo-scalar, vector or axial-vector. Our analysis extends and updates the previously available results for the LHC at 8 and 1…
I briefly review the crucial role an $\emem$ linear collider could play in unravelling the nature of a non-minimal Higgs sector and/or strongly-interacting $WW$ sector.
Signatures of extended gauge models at high energy \epem\ linear colliders are summarized. Talk presented at the Workshop on Physics and Experiments with Linear \epem\ Colliders, Waikoloa, Hawaii, April 1993.
This Thesis is devoted to the study of the phenomenology of the Higgs sector of the minimal $B-L$ extension of the Standard Model at present and future colliders. Firstly, the motivations that call for the minimal $B-L$ extension are summarised. In addition, the model is analysed in its salient parts. Moreover, a detailed review of the phenomenological allowed Higgs sector parameter space is given. Finally, a complete survey of the distinctive Higgs boson signatures of the model at both the Large Hadron Collider and the future linear colliders is presented.
A preponderance of astrophysical and cosmological evidence indicates that the universe contains not only visible matter but also dark matter. In order to suppress the couplings between the dark and visible sectors, a standard assumption is that these two sectors communicate only through a mediator. In this paper we make a simple but important observation: if the dark sector contains multiple components with similar quantum numbers, then this mediator also generically gives rise to dark-sector decays, with heavier dark components decaying to lighter components. This in turn can even give rise t…
In this review we demonstrate physics potential of a photon linear collider by studying the neutral Higgs-boson sector of the MSSM in which interesting CP-violating Higgs mixing could arise via radiative corrections.
The theoretical structure of the Higgs sector of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) is briefly described. An outline of Higgs phenomenology at future lepton colliders is presented, and some opportunities for probing the physics of the MSSM Higgs sector at an e-e- collider are considered.
We present a comprehensive analysis on the MSSM Higgs sector CP violation at photon colliders including the chargino contributions as well as the contributions of other charged particles. The chargino loop contributions can be important for the would-be CP odd Higgs production at photon colliders. Polarization asymmetries are indispensable in determining the CP properties of neutral Higgs bosons.
I survey the characteristics of hadron colliders as tools to investigate top-quark physics and to explore the 1-TeV scale of electroweak symmetry breaking.
The violation of CP symmetry at the electro-weak scale is one of the essential ingredients for electro-weak baryogenesis. It is therefore of great interest to map the CP properties of the Higgs sector in as much detail as possible. A linear electron-positron Higgs factory collider will provide many opportunities to probe the CP nature of the Higgs sector, thanks to access to several Higgs production processes at a wide range of centre-of-mass energies. In this paper we report on two studies based on full simulation of detector response and realistic reconstruction algorithms: 1) a study of $h …
In this paper, we examine the strategies and prospects for distinguishing between traditional dark-matter models and models with non-minimal dark sectors --- including models of Dynamical Dark Matter (DDM) --- at hadron colliders. For concreteness, we focus on events with two hadronic jets and large missing transverse energy at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). As we discuss, simple "bump-hunting" searches are not sufficient; probing non-minimal dark sectors typically requires an analysis of the actual shapes of the distributions of relevant kinematic variables. We therefore begin by identifyin…
We give a brief overview of searches at TeV e^+e^- colliders for new particles that arise in models with extended gauge sectors. We concentrate on some recent developments in $W'$ searches and on leptoquark searches. We also briefly mention $Z'$ searches.
After the discovery of a particle that complies with the properties of the Higgs boson predicted by the Standard Model, particle physics has entered an exciting era. One important question is whether the scalar sector realized by Nature indeed corresponds to the one predicted by the SM, or whether the resonance at 125 GeV is a manifestation of a more extended scalar sector, and additional scalar states could be observed at current or future collider facilities.
After the discovery of the Higgs boson in 2012, particle physics has entered an exciting era. An important question is whether the Standard Model of particle physics correctly describes the scalar sector realized by nature, or whether it is part of a more extended model, featuring additional particle content. A prime way to test this is to probe models with extended scalar sectors at future collider facilities. We here discuss such models in the context of high-luminosity LHC, a possible proton-proton collider with 27 and 100 TeV center-of-mass energy, as well as future lepton colliders with v…
We add fermions to an abelian-gauged hidden sector. We show that the lightest can be the dark matter with the right thermal relic abundance, and discovery is within reach of upcoming dark matter detectors. We also show that these fermions change Higgs boson phenomenology at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), and in particular could induce a large invisible width to the lightest Higgs boson state. Such an invisibly decaying Higgs boson can be discovered with good significance in the vector boson fusion channel at the LHC.
In this paper, we review the role of a multi-TeV $e^+e^-$ linear collider to complete the mapping of the Higgs boson profile and studying heavier bosons in extended scenarios with more than one Higgs doublet.
We discuss the phenomenology of effective field theories with new scalar or vector representations of the Standard Model quark flavor symmetry group, allowing for large flavor breaking involving the third generation. Such field content can have a relatively low mass scale \lesssim TeV and O(1) couplings to quarks, while being naturally consistent with both flavor violating and flavor diagonal constraints. These theories therefore have the potential for early discovery at LHC, and provide a flavor safe "tool box" for addressing anomalies at colliders and low energy experiments. We catalogue the…
Dark sectors with strong interactions have received considerable interest. Assuming the existence of a minimally coupled dark sector which runs to strong interactions in the infrared, we address the question whether the scaling behavior of this dark sector can be observed in missing energy signatures at present and future hadron colliders. We compare these findings to the concrete case of self-interacting dark matter and demonstrate that the energy dependence of high-momentum transfer final states can in principle be used to gain information about the UV structure of hidden sectors at future h…
The model-independent constraints on the Abelian Z' couplings from the LEP data are applied to estimate the Z' production in experiments at the Tevatron and LHC. The Z' total and partial decay widths are analyzed. The results are compared with model-dependent predictions and present experimental data from the Tevatron. If we assume the 1-2sigma hints from the LEP data to be a signal of the Abelian Z' boson, then the Tevatron data constrain the Z' mass between 400 GeV and 1.2 TeV.
In this proceeding, I summarize results on various new physics extensions of the Standard Model, for models with and without dark matter candidates. I discuss current constraints as well as rates and discovery prospects at future colliders.
We propose a scenario of gravity mediated supersymmetry breaking (gravity mediation) in a supersymmetric Randall-Sundrum model. In our setup, both of the visible sector and the hidden sector co-exist on the infrared (IR) brane. We introduce the Polonyi model as a simple hidden sector. Due to the warped metric, the effective cutoff scale on the IR brane is ``warped down'', so that the gravity mediation occurs at a low scale. As a result, the gravitino is naturally the lightest superpartner (LSP) and contact interactions between the hidden and the visible sector fields become stronger. We addres…
We discuss the prospects for detecting at a muon collider the massive new vector resonances V and light pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone bosons P of a typical strongly interacting electroweak sector (as represented by the BESS model). Expected sensitivities to V's at a high energy collider are evaluated and the excellent prospects for discovering P's via scanning at a low energy collider are delineated.
In this work we have studied the phenomenological properties at future e+e- linear colliders of two models of strong electroweak symmetry breaking, characterized by the presence of new spin one strong interacting resonances.
The top quark data in the lepton plus $τ$ channel offers a viable probe for the charged Higgs boson signal. We analyse the recent Tevatron collider data in this channel to obtain a significant limit on the $H^\pm$ mass in the large $\tanβ$ region.
We explore the possibility that the dark matter relic density is not produced by thermal mechanism directly, but by the decay of other heavier dark sector particles which on the other hand can be produced by the thermal freeze-out mechanism. Using a concrete model with a light dark matter from dark sector decay, we study the collider signature of the dark sector particles in association with Higgs production processes. We find that the future lepton colliders can be a better place to probe the signature of this kind of light dark matter model than the hadron collider such as LHC. Meanwhile, it…
In the Randall-Sundrum model there can be a rich new phenomenology associated with Higgs-radion mixing. A photon-photon collider would provide a crucial complement to the LHC and a future ILC collider for fully determining the parameters of the model and definitively testing it.
The CP properties of Higgs bosons can be probed through their s-channel resonance productions via photon-photon collisions by use of circularly and/or linearly polarized backscattered laser photons at a TeV-scale linear e^+ e^- collider. Exploiting this powerful tool, we investigate in detail the Higgs sector of the minimal supersymmetric Standard Model with explicit CP violation.
We explore the collider signatures of the Higgs sectors in singlet-extended MSSM models. We find that even with reduced couplings due to singlet mixing, a significant portion of the parameter spaces have a discoverable Higgs via traditional decay modes or via invisible decays (directly to neutralinos or through cascade decays to neutralinos and neutrinos). For illustrative points in parameter space we give the likelihood of Higgs discovery. In cases where neither traditional nor invisible modes can discover the Higgs, the neutralino sector may provide evidence for the extended models.
We discuss the excellent prospects for a detailed study of a strongly interacting electroweak sector at a muon collider with c.m. energy $\rts\sim 4\tev$. For expected luminosity of $L=200-1000\fbi$ per year, $\mup\mum$ and $\mup\mup$ (or $\mum\mum$) collisions can be used to study longitudinal $\wp\wm$ and $\wp\wp$ (or $\wm\wm$) scattering with considerable precision. In particular, detailed measurements of the distribution in the $VV$ pair masses ($V=\wpm,Z$) will be possible. The shape and magnitude of these distributions will provide a powerful tool for determining the nature of strong gau…
We summarize the results of the New Gauge Boson Subgroup on the physics of extended gauge sectors at future colliders as presented at the 1996 Snowmass workshop. We discuss the direct and indirect search reaches for new gauge bosons at both hadron and lepton colliders as well as the ability of such machines to extract detailed information on the couplings of these particles to the fermions and gauge bosons of the Standard Model. [To appear in the Proceedings of the 1996 DPF/DPB Summer Study on New Directions for High Energy Physics-Snowmass96, Snowmass, CO, 25 June-12 July, 1996.]
In this work, I briefly report on constraints that can be obtained on new physics models that extend the scalar sector of the Standard Model (SM) of particle physics at the LHC. I concentrate on a few simple examples which serve to demonstrate advantages as well as possible drawbacks of current experimental searches, and comment on the discovery prospects of such models at future colliders.
We investigate the power of low-energy, high-luminosity electron--positron colliders to probe hidden sectors with a mass below ~10 GeV that couple to Standard Model particles through a light mediator. Such sectors provide well-motivated dark matter candidates, and can give rise to distinctive mono-photon signals at B-factories and similar experiments. We use data from an existing mono-photon search by BaBar to place new constraints on this class of models, and give projections for the sensitivity of a similar search at a future B-factory such as Belle II. We find that the sensitivity of such s…
Minimal scenarios with light (sub-GeV) thermal dark matter are usually accompanied by a correspondingly light "dark sector". Taking as an example a simple fermionic dark matter model, we will show that the presence of the dark sector plays a key role in constraining such scenarios at accelerators experiments. The effect of including a dark Higgs boson in the light spectrum is in particular investigated.
We summarise the phenomenology of the Higgs sector of the minimal $B-L$ extension of the Standard Model at an $e^+e^-$ Linear Collider. Within such a scenario, we show that (in comparison with the Large Hadron Collider) several novel production and decay channels involving the two physical Higgs states could experimentally be accessed at such a machine. In particular, we present the scope of the $Z'$ strahlung process for single and double Higgs production, the only suitable mechanism for accessing an almost decoupled heavy scalar state.
An effective lagrangian describing a strong interacting electroweak sector is considered. It contains new vector and axial-vector resonances all degenerate in mass and mixed with $W$ and $Z$. The model, for large mass of these degenerate gauge bosons, becomes identical to the standard model in the classical limit of infinite Higgs mass. The limits on the parameter space of this model from future $e^+e^-$ colliders are presented.
We discuss mechanisms for naturally generating GeV-scale hidden sectors in the context of weak-scale supersymmetry. Such low mass scales can arise when hidden sectors are more weakly coupled to supersymmetry breaking than the visible sector, as happens when supersymmetry breaking is communicated to the visible sector by gauge interactions under which the hidden sector is uncharged, or if the hidden sector is sequestered from gravity-mediated supersymmetry breaking. We study these mechanisms in detail in the context of gauge and gaugino mediation, and present specific models of Abelian GeV-scal…
We calculate the production rate of gauge-boson pairs at $e^+e^-$ colliders in a model with a ``hidden'' electroweak symmetry breaking sector - i.e. one in which there are a large number of particles in the symmetry breaking sector other than the $W^{\pm}$ \thinspace and the $Z^0$. In such a model, the elastic $W^{\pm}$ \thinspace and $Z^0$ scattering amplitudes are small and structureless, i.e. lacking any discernable resonances, at all energies. We show that two gauge boson fusion signal of electroweak symmetry breaking is swamped by the background. Therefore, we cannot rely on gauge boson p…
We study the phenomenological implications of the Higgs sector CP violation at a photon collider. In our model, the CP violation is radiatively induced by the non-trivial CP phases of the third-generation scalar-quark sector in the MSSM. We re-evaluate the $s$-channel resonance production cross sections and the polarization asymmetries of the neutral Higgs bosons based on the calculation of the mass matrix of the neutral Higgs bosons which is valid for any values of the relevant SUSY parameters. The CP properties of the Higgs bosons can be precisely probed through their $s$-channel resonance p…
The sensitivity of future electron-proton colliders, the LHeC and FCC-eh, to weakly-produced supersymmetric particles is evaluated in this article. Supersymmetric scenarios where charginos ($\tildeχ_1^{\pm}$) and neutralinos ($\tildeχ_1^{0}$ and $\tildeχ_2^{0}$) are nearly degenerate in mass are considered. Two sets of models, which differ in the mass of sleptons ($\tilde{\ell}$), are studied. Under the hypothesis that slepton masses are at the multi-TeV scale (``decoupled'' scenario), the production processes for charginos and neutralinos at $ep$ colliders, $p\, e^- \to j\, e^-\, \tildeχ \til…
If there are no light Higgs bosons found below $\cal O$(800 GeV) or so, the interactions among longitudinally-polarized vector bosons ($\wl$) will become strong at the TeV region, and new physics that is responsible for the electroweak symmetry breaking must emerge at this energy scale. We discuss the phenomenological prospects of the Strongly-interacting Electro-Weak Sector (SEWS) at future TeV linear colliders and hadronic supercolliders.
We consider a generic abelian hidden sector that couples to the Standard Model only through gauge-invariant renormalizable operators. This allows the exotic Higgs boson to mix with the Standard Model Higgs boson, and the exotic abelian gauge boson to mix with the Standard Model hypercharge gauge boson. One immediate consequence of spontaneous breaking of the hidden sector gauge group is the possible decay of the lightest Higgs boson into four fermions through intermediate exotic gauge bosons. We study the implications of this decay for Higgs boson phenomenology at the Fermilab Tevatron Collide…
We are exploring a generic strongly-interacting Electroweak Symmetry Breaking Sector (EWSBS) with the low-energy effectie field theory for the four experimentally known particles ($W_L^\pm$, $Z_L$, $h$) and its dispersion-relation based unitary extension. In this contribution we provide simple estimates for the production cross section of pairs of the EWSBS bosons and their resonances at proton-proton colliders as well as in a future $e^-e^+$ (or potentially a $μ^-μ^+$) collider with a typical few-TeV energy. We examine the simplest production mechanisms, tree-level production through a $W$ (d…
The phenomenology of dark sector is complicated if dark sector is charged under a confined hidden gauge group. In such kind of model, a dark parton produced at a high energy collider showers and hadronize to a cluster of dark mesons. Dark mesons then decay to visible particles and produce a jet-like signal, which is called "dark jet" in this work. Collider signal of dark jet depends on the property of dark mesons. For example, a finite lifetime of dark meson would provide displaced vertex or displaced track, thus one can use these displaced objects to tag dark jet. However if the lifetime of d…
Loop driven decay modes of the Higgs are sensitive to new physics contributions because of new particles in the loops. To highlight this we look at the dilepton-dijet signal in the dominant Higgs production channel at a linear e+e- collider. We show that by taking a simple ratio between cross-sections of two different final states such contributions can be very easily identified.
We study the expected phenomenology at present (Tevatron) and future (Tevatron Upgrade, LHC) hadronic colliders of a model describing a strong electroweak symmetry breaking sector with both vector and axial vector strong interacting bosons degenerate in mass. Due to decoupling, this model at low energies is almost indistinguishable from the Standard Model, passing therefore all low energy precision tests at LEPI. We will show that it gives quite visible signals at forthcoming hadronic accelerators. The new charged vector bosons can be detected more easily than the neutral ones.
In this proceeding, I discuss several models that extend the scalar sector of the Standard Model by additional matter states. I here focus on results for models with singlet extensions, which have been obtained recently and update some of the results presented in previous work. In more detail, I will briefly review the option to test a strong first-order electroweak phase transition using precision measurements in the electroweak sector, as well as production cross-sections for non-standard scalar production at Higgs factories.
We consider a general two-Higgs-doublet model with CP violation in the scalar sector. Three neutral Higgs fields of the model all mix and the resulting physical Higgs bosons have no definite CP properties. That leads, at the one-loop level of the perturbation expansion, to CP-violating form factors for gamma-t-tbar, Z-t-tbar and W-t-b interaction vertices. We discuss asymmetries sensitive to CP violation induced by the form factors for the process e^+ e^- -> t tbar -> l^\pm ... and e^+ e^- -> t tbar -> b/bbar ... at future linear e+ e- colliders.
We investigate the potential of current and planned hadron colliders operating at the TeV scale in disentangling the structure of the Higgs sector of non-minimal Supersymmetric extensions of the Standard Model with an extra gauge singlet. We assume universality of the soft Supersymmetry breaking terms at the GUT scale as well as a CP-even Higgs boson with mass around 115 GeV, as suggested by LEP. We find that mixing angles between the doublet and singlet Higgs states are always small. However, concrete prospects exist at both the Tevatron (Run II) and the Large Hadron Collider of detecting at …
Where collider searches for resonant invisible particles loose steam, dark sectors might leave their trace as virtual effects in precision observables. Here we explore this option in the framework of Higgs portal models, where a sector of dark fermions interacts with the standard model through a strong renormalizable coupling to the Higgs boson. We show that precise measurements of Higgs-gauge and triple Higgs interactions can probe dark fermions up to the TeV scale through virtual corrections. Observation prospects at the LHC and future lepton colliders are discussed for the so-called singlet…
We perform a preliminary study of the deviations from the Standard Model prediction for the cross section for the process $e γ\rightarrow ν_e W γ$. We work in the context of a higgsless chiral lagrangian model that includes an extra vector resonance $V$ and an anomalous $γW V$ coupling. We find that this cross section can provide interesting constraints on the free parameters of the model once it is measured in future $e γ$ colliders.
