Using the improved quantization technique to the mini-superspace approximation of loop quantum gravity, we study the evolution of black holes supported by a cosmological constant. The addition of a cosmological constant allows for classical solutions with planar, cylindrical, toroidal and higher genus black holes. Here we study the quantum analog of these space-times. In all scenarios studied, the singularity present in the classical counter-part is avoided in the quantized version and is replaced by a bounce, and in the late evolution, a series of less severe bounces. Interestingly, although there are differences during the evolution between the various symmetries and topologies, the evolution on the other side of the bounce asymptotes to space-times of Nariai-type, with the exception of the planar black hole analyzed here, whose $T$-$R$=constant subspaces seem to continue expanding in the long term evolution. For the other cases, Nariai-type universes are attractors in the quantum evolution, albeit with different parameters. We study here the quantum evolution of each symmetry in detail.
In this contribution, we re-assess the subject of topological gravity by following the Shift Supersymmetry formalism. The gauge-fixing of the theory goes under the Batallin-Vilkovisky (BV) prescription based on a diagram that contains both ghost and anti-ghost superfields, associated to the super-vielbein and the super-Lorentz connection. We extend the formulation of the topological gravity action to an arbitrary number of dimensions of the shift superspace by adopting a formulation based on the gauge-fixing for BF-type models.
We consider the quantization of the midi-superspace associated with a class of spacetimes with toroidal isometries, but without the compact spatial hypersurfaces of the well-known Gowdy models. By a symmetry reduction, the phase space for the system at the classical level can be identified with that of a free massless scalar field on a fixed background spacetime, thereby providing a simple route to quantization. We are then able to study certain non-perturbative features of the quantum gravitational system. In particular, we examine the quantum geometry of the asymptotic regions of the spaceti…
A midi-superspace model is a field theory obtained by symmetry reduction of a parent gravitational theory. Such models have proven useful for exploring the classical and quantum dynamics of the gravitational field. I present 3 recent classes of results pertinent to canonical quantization of vacuum general relativity in the context of midi-superspace models. (1) I give necessary and sufficient conditions such that a given symmetry reduction can be performed at the level of the Lagrangian or Hamiltonian. (2) I discuss the Hamiltonian formulation of models based upon cylindrical and toroidal symm…
It is well-known that the Einstein-Rosen solutions to the 3+1 dimensional vacuum Einstein's equations are in one to one correspondence with solutions of 2+1 dimensional general relativity coupled to axi-symmetric, zero rest mass scalar fields. We first re-examine the quanization of this midi-superspace paying special attention to the asymptotically flat boundary conditions and to certain functional analytic subtleties associated with regularization. We then use the resulting quantum theory to analyze several conceptual and technical issues of quantum gravity.
The four-dimensional gauge group of general relativity corresponds to arbitrary coordinate transformations on a four-manifold. Theories of gravity with a dynamical structure remarkably like Einstein's theory can be obtained on the basis of a four-dimensional gauge group of arbitrary coordinate and conformal transformations of riemannian metrics defined on a three-manifold. This new symmetry is more restrictive and hence more predictive. Many of the difficulties that have plagued the canonical quantization of general relativity seem to vanish.
The configuration space of general relativity is superspace - the space of all Riemannian 3-metrics modulo diffeomorphisms. However, it has been argued that the configuration space for gravity should be conformal superspace - the space of all Riemannian 3-metrics modulo diffeomorphisms and conformal transformations. Taking this conformal nature seriously leads to a new theory of gravity which although very similar to general relativity has some very different features particularly in cosmology and quantisation. It should reproduce the standard tests of general relativity. The cosmology is stud…
It has been shown that inclusion of higher order curvature invariant terms in the Robertson-Walker minisuperspace model of the Einstein-Hilbert action leads to Schrodinger like equation, whose corresponding effective action is hermitian. Thus, it is possible to write the continuity equation in a straight forward manner, which reveals a quantum mechanical probability interpretation of the theory.
We prove that, at the mini superspace level, and for an arbitrary Brans-Dicke parameter, one cannot tell traditional Einstein-Hilbert gravity from local scale invariant Weyl-Dirac gravity. Both quantum mechanical cosmologies are governed by the one and the same time-independent single-variable Hartle-Hawking wave function. It is only that its original argument, the cosmic scale factor $a$, is replaced by $aϕ$ ($ϕ$ being the dilaton field) to form a Dirac in-scalar. The Weyl vector enters quantum cosmology only in the presence of an extra dimension, where its fifth component, serving as a 4-dim…
The space of all Riemannian metrics is infinite-dimensional. Nevertheless a great deal of usual Riemannian geometry can be carried over. The superspace of all Riemannian metrics shall be endowed with a class of Riemannian metrics; their curvature and invariance properties are discussed. Just one of this class has the property to bring the lagrangian of General Relativity into the form of a classical particle's motion. The signature of the superspace metric depends in a non-trivial manner on the signature of the original metric, we derive the corresponding formula. Our approach is a local one: …
We first roughly present a summary of the optico-mechanical analogy, which has always been so profitable in physics. Then we put forward a geometrodynamical formulation of gravity suitable to our intentions, both formally and conceptually. We present difficulties in some approaches to canonically quantize gravity which can be amended by the idea put forward in this paper, which we introduce in the last section. It consists basically in trying to find an intermediary between the quantization step going from the classical superhamiltonian constraint to the Wheeler-DeWitt equation. This is accomp…
We investigate certain properties of the Wheeler-DeWitt metric (for constant lapse) in canonical General Relativity associated with its non-definite nature. Contribution to the conference on Mach's principle: "From Newtons Bucket to Quantum Gravity", July 26-30 1993, Tuebingen, Germany
Motivated by well-known obstacles to quantum gravity, I look for the most general geometrodynamical symmetries compatible with a reduced physical configuration space for metric gravity. I argue that they lead either to a completely static Universe, or one embodying spatial conformal diffeomorphisms. Demanding locality for an action compatible with these principles determines the sort of terms one can add, both for the purely gravitational part as well as matter couplings. The symmetries guarantee that there are two gravitational propagating physical degrees of freedom (and no explicit refoliat…
We propose an improved variant of the third-quantization scheme, for the spatially homogeneous and isotropic cosmological models in Einstein gravity coupled with a neutral massless scalar field. Our strategy is to specify a semi-Riemannian structure on the mini-superspace and to consider the quantum Klein-Gordon field on the mini-superspace. Then, the Hilbert space of this quantum system becomes inseparable, which causes the creation of infinite number of universes. To overcome this issue, we introduce a vector bundle structure on the Hilbert space and the connection of the vector bundle. Then…
The configuration space of general relativity is superspace - the space of all Riemannian 3-metrics modulo diffeomorphisms. However, it has been argued that the configuration space for gravity should be conformal superspace - the space of all Riemannian 3-metrics modulo diffeomorphisms and conformal transformations. Recently a manifestly 3-dimensional theory was constructed with conformal superspace as the configuration space. Here a fully 4-dimensional action is constructed so as to be invariant under conformal transformations of the 4-metric using general relativity as a guide. This action i…
Hamilton-Jacobi theory for general relativity provides an elegant covariant formulation of the gravitational field. A general `coordinate-free' method of integrating the functional Hamilton-Jacobi equation for gravity and matter is described. This series approximation method represents a large generalization of the spatial gradient expansion that had been employed earlier. Additional solutions may be constructed using a nonlinear superposition principle. This formalism may be applied to problems in cosmology.
Wormholes are considered both from the Wheeler deWitt equation, as well as from the field equations in the Euclidean background of Roberson Walker mini-superspace in $R^2$ gravity. Quantum wormhole satisfies Hawking Page wormhole boundary condition in the Euclidean background of mini-superspace, however, in the Lorentzian background wave functional turns to the usual oscillatory function. The Euclidean field equations for $κ=0, \pm1$ lead to the wormhole configuration; as well as oscillating universe in Euclidean time $τ$. The oscillating universe is equivalent to expanding universe under anal…
A companion paper provides a proposal for cosmic singularity resolution based upon general features of a bouncing unitary cosmological model in the mini-superspace approximation. This paper analyses novel phenomenology that can be identified within particular solutions of that model. First, we justify our choice of particular solutions based upon a clearly articulated and observationally-motivated principle. Second, we demonstrate that the chosen solutions follow a classical mini-superspace cosmology before smoothly bouncing off the classically singular region. Third, and most significantly, w…
The information paradox can be resolved if we recognize that the wavefunctional in gravity $Ψ[g]$ should be considered on the {\it whole} of superspace, the space of possible $g$. The largeness of the Bekenstein entropy implies a vast space of gravitational solutions, which are conjectured to be fuzzball configurations. In the WKB approximation, the wavefunctional for a collapsing shell is oscillatory in a small region of superspace, and the classical approximation picks out this part. But the wavefunctional will be damped (`under the barrier') in the remainder of this vast superspace. We perf…
Recently a scale invariant theory of gravity was constructed by imposing a conformal symmetry on general relativity. The imposition of this symmetry changed the configuration space from superspace - the space of all Riemannian 3-metrics modulo diffeomorphisms - to conformal superspace - the space of all Riemannian 3-metrics modulo diffeomorphisms and conformal transformations. However, despite numerous attractive features, the theory suffers from at least one major problem: the volume of the universe is no longer a dynamical variable. In attempting to resolve this problem a new theory is found…
In this Letter we consider the perturbative quantum gravity on the super-manifold which remains invariant under absolutely anticommuting BRST and anti-BRST transformations. In addition to that the theory posses one more symmetry known as shift symmetry. The BRST invariant Batalin-Vilkovisky (BV) action for perturbative quantum gravity is realized as a translation in Grassmann coordinate. Further we show that the quantum master equation of the BV quantization method at one-loop order can be translated to have a superfield structure for the action. However, the BRST as well as anti-BRST invarian…
One solution to the so-called problem of time is to construct certain Dirac observables, sometimes called evolving constants of motion. There has been some discussion in the literature about the interpretation of such observables, and in particular whether single Dirac observables can be measured. Here we clarify the situation by describing a class of interactions that can be said to implement measurements of such observables. Along the way, we describe a useful notion of perturbation theory for the rigging map eta of group averaging (sometimes loosely called the physical state "projector"), w…
We review some properties of the space of connections as the natural arena for canonical (quantum) gravity, and compare to the case of the superspace of 3-metrics. We detail how a 1-parameter family of metrics on the space of connections arises from the canonical analysis for general relativity which has a natural interpretation in terms of invariant tensors on the algebra of the gauge group. We also review the description of canonical GR as a geodesic principle on the space of connections, and comment on the existence of a time variable which could be used in the interpretation of the quantum…
Canonical quantization of spherically symmetric initial data which is appropriate to classical interior black hole solutions in four dimensions is carried out and solved exactly without gauge fixing the remaining kinematic Gauss Law constraint. The resultant mini-superspace manifold and arena for quantum geometrodynamics is two-dimensional, of signature (+, -), non-singular, and can in fact be identified precisely with the first Rindler wedge. The associated Wheeler-DeWitt equation with evolution in intrinsic superspace time can be formulated as a free massive Klein-Gordon equation; and the Ha…
The Wheeler-DeWitt Equation represents a tool to study Quantum Gravity and Quantum Cosmology. Its solution in a very general context is, of course, impossible. To this purpose we consider some distortions of General Relativity like Gravity's Rainbow, Varying Speed of Light Cosmology, Generalized Uncertainty Principle deformations and Hořava-Lifshitz gravity which could allow the calculation of some observables like the cosmological constant. For simplicity we consider only the Mini-Superspace approach related to a Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker space-time.
We continue the study of spherically symmetric vacuum space-times in loop quantum gravity by treating the interior of a black hole. We start from a midi-superspace approach, but a simple gauge fixing leads to a Kantowski--Sachs form for the variables. We show that one can solve the quantum theory exactly in the (periodic) connection representation, including the inner product. The evolution can be solved exactly by de-parameterizing the theory and can be easily interpreted as a semi-classical evolution plus quantum corrections. A relational evolution can also be introduced in a precise manner,…
We offer a new proposal for cosmic singularity resolution based upon a quantum cosmology with a unitary bounce. This proposal is illustrated via a novel quantization of a mini-superspace model in which there can be superpositions of the cosmological constant. This possibility leads to a finite, bouncing unitary cosmology. Whereas the usual Wheeler--DeWitt cosmology generically displays pathological behaviour in terms of non-finite expectation values and non-unitary dynamics, the finiteness and unitarity of our model are formally guaranteed. For classically singular models with a massless scala…
The groupoid approach to noncommutative unification of general relativity with quantum mechanics is compared with the canonical gravity quantization. It is shown that by restricting the corresponding noncommutative algebra to its (commutative) subalgebra, which determines the space-time slicing, an algebraic counterpart of superspace (space of 3-metrics) can be obtained. It turns out that when this space-time slicing emerges the universe is already in its commutative regime. We explore the consequences of this result.
The method of four-dimensional Causal Dynamical Triangulations provides a background-independent definition of the sum over geometries in quantum gravity, in the presence of a positive cosmological constant. We present the evidence accumulated to date that a macroscopic four-dimensional world can emerge from this theory dynamically. Using computer simulations we observe in the Euclidean sector a universe whose scale factor exhibits the same dynamics as that of the simplest mini-superspace models in quantum cosmology, with the distinction that in the case of causal dynamical triangulations the …
Wheeler-DeWitt equation is applied to $k > 0$ Friedmann Robertson Walker metric with various types of matter. It is shown that if the Universe ends in the matter dominated era (e.g., radiation or pressureless gas) with zero cosmological constant, then the resulting Wheeler-DeWitt equation describes a bound state problem. As solutions of a non-degenerate bound state system, the eigen-wave functions are real (Hartle-Hawking) and the usual issue associated with the ambiguity in the boundary conditions for the wave functions is resolved. Furthermore, as a bound state problem, there exists a quanti…
We discuss some subtleties which arise in the semiclassical approximation to quantum gravity. We show that integrability conditions prevent the existence of Tomonaga-Schwinger time functions on the space of three-metrics but admit them on superspace. The concept of semiclassical time is carefully examined. We point out that central charges in the matter sector spoil the consistency of the semiclassical approximation unless the full quantum theory of gravity and matter is anomaly-free. We finally discuss consequences of these considerations for quantum field theory in flat spacetime, but with a…
The mini-superspace quantization of D=11 supergravity is equivalent to the quantization of a E10/K(E10) coset space sigma model, when the latter is restricted to the E10 Cartan subalgebra. As a consequence, the wavefunctions solving the relevant mini-superspace Wheeler-DeWitt equation involve automorphic (Maass wave) forms under the modular group W^+(E10)=PSL(2,O). Using Dirichlet boundary conditions on the billiard domain a general inequality for the Laplace eigenvalues of these automorphic forms is derived, entailing a wave function of the universe that is generically complex and always tend…
The set of all metrics that can be placed on a given manifold defines an infinite-dimensional `superspace' that can itself be imbued with the structure of a Riemannian manifold. Geodesic distances between points on Met$(M)$ measure how close two different metrics over $M$ are to one another. Restricting our attention to only those metrics that describe physical black holes, these distances may therefore be thought of as measuring the level of geometric similarity between different black hole structures. This allows for a systematic quantification of the extent to which a black hole, possibly a…
In this paper we will study non-anticommutative perturbative quantum gravity on spacetime with a complex metric. After analysing the BRST symmetry of this non-anticommutative perturbative quantum gravity, we will also analyse the effect of shifting all the fields. We will construct a Lagrangian density which is invariant under the original BRST transformations and the shift transformations in the Batalin-Vilkovisky (BV) formalism. Finally, we will show that the sum of the gauge-fixing term and the ghost term for this shift symmetry invariant Lagrangian density can be elegantly written down in …
The 'hole argument'(the English translation of German 'Lochbetrachtung') was formulated by Albert Einstein in 1913 in his search for a relativistic theory of gravitation. The hole argument was deemed to be based on a trivial error of Einstein, until 1980 when John Stachel (Talk on Einsteins Search for General Covariance, 1912-1915 at the GRG meeting in Jena 1980) recognized its highly non-trivial character. Since then the argument has been intensively discussed by many physicists and philosophers of science. (See e.g., Earman & Norton (1987), Gaul & Rovelli (1999), Stachel & Iftime(2005}, and …
A detailed review is given of the semiclassical approximation to quantum gravity in the canonical framework. This includes in particular the derivation of the functional Schrödinger equation and a discussion of semiclassical time as well as the derivation of quantum gravitational correction terms to the Schrödinger equation. These terms are used to calculate energy shifts for fields in De~Sitter space and non-unitary contributions in black hole evaporation. Emphasis is also put on the relevance of decoherence and correlations in semiclassical gravity. The back reaction of non-gravitational qua…
Standard techniques of canonical gravity quantization on the superspace of 3--metrics are known to cause insurmountable difficulties in the description of time evolution. We forward a new quantization procedure on the superspace of true dynamic variables -- geometrodynamic quantization. This procedure takes into account the states that are ``off-shell'' with respect to the constraints and thus circumvents the notorious problems of time. In this approach quantum geometrodynamics, general covariance, and the interpretation of time emerge together as parts of the solution to the total problem of …
The phenomenon of linearisation instability is identified in models of quantum cosmology that are perturbations of mini-superspace models. In particular, constraints that are second order in the perturbations must be imposed on wave functions calculated in such models. It is shown explicitly that in the case of a model which is a perturbation of the mini-superspace which has $S^3$ spatial sections these constraints imply that any wave functions calculated in this model must be SO(4) invariant. (This replaces the previous corrupted version.)
A solvable 2-dimensional conformally invariant midi-superspace model for black holes is obtained by imposing spherical symmetry in 4-dimensional conformally invariant Einstein gravity. The Wheeler-DeWitt equation for the theory is solved exactly to obtain the unique quantum wave functional for an isolated black hole with fixed mass. By suitably relaxing the boundary conditions, a non-perturbative ansatz is obtained for the wave functional of a black hole interacting with its surroundings.
In this paper we will study perturbative quantum gravity on supermanifolds with both noncommutative and non-anticommutative coordinates. We shall first analyses the BRST and the anti-BRST symmetries of this theory. Then we will also analyze the effect of shifting all the fields of this theory in background field method. We will construct a Lagrangian density which apart from being invariant under the extended BRST transformations is also invariant under on-shell extended anti-BRST transformations. This will be done by using the Batalin-Vilkovisky (BV) formalism. Finally, we will show that the …
The Hartle-Hawking wave function is known to be the Fourier dual of the Chern-Simons or Kodama state reduced to mini-superspace, using an integration contour covering the whole real line. But since the Chern-Simons state is a general solution of the Hamiltonian constraint (with a given ordering), its Fourier dual should provide the general solution (i.e. beyond mini-superspace) of the Wheeler DeWitt equation representing the Hamiltonian constraint in the metric representation. We write down a formal expression for such a wave function, to be seen as the generalization beyond mini-superspace of…
The Shapere-Wilczek model \cite{wil}, or so called $ fgh$ model, enjoys the remarkable features of a Time Crystal (TC) that has a non-trivial time dependence in its lowest energy state (or the classical ground state). We construct a particular form of $ fgh$ model (with specified $f,g,h$ functions) that is derived from a Mini-superspace version of a quadratic $f(R,R_{μν})$ gravity theory. Main part of the investigation deals with thermodynamic properties of such systems from classical statistical mechanics perspective. Our analysis reveals the possibility of a {\it phase transition}. Because o…
We revisit spatially flat, anisotropic cosmologies within the framework of mini-superspace. Putting special emphasis on the symmetries of the mini-superspace action and on the associated conservation laws, we unveil a new class of rotating cosmologies driven by solid matter. Their rotating is physical, in that it is characterized in an invariant way in terms of a conserved angular momentum. Along the way, we confirm the results of Bartolo et al. regarding the slow decay of anisotropies for solid inflation. We then use our minisuperspace approach as a laboratory to address certain puzzles of qu…
Normalizing the Einstein-Hilbert action by the volume functional makes the theory invariant under constant shifts in the Lagrangian. The associated field equations then resemble unimodular gravity whose otherwise arbitrary cosmological constant is now determined as a Machian universal average. We prove that an empty space-time is necessarily Ricci tensor flat, and demonstrate the vanishing of the cosmological constant within the scalar field paradigm. The cosmological analysis, carried out at the mini-superspace level, reveals a vanishing cosmological constant for a Universe which cannot be cl…
In the context of metric f(R) gravity, we consider a FLRW space-time, filled with a perfect fluid described by a barotropic equation of state (p = γρ). We give the equivalent mini-superspace description and use the reparametrization invariance of the resulting Lagrangian to work in the equivalent constant potential description. At that point, we restrict our analysis to those models for which the ensuing scaled mini-superspace is maximally symmetric. Those models exhibit the maximum number of autonomous integrals of motion linear in the momenta, which are constructed by the Killing vectors of …
We argue that the topological string partition function, which has been known to correspond to a wave-function, can be interpreted as an exact ``wave-function of the universe'' in the mini-superspace sector of physical superstring theory. This realizes the idea of Hartle and Hawking in the context of string theory, including all loop quantum corrections. The mini-superspace approximation is justified as an exact description of BPS quantities. Moreover this proposal leads to a conceptual explanation of the recent observation that the black hole entropy is the square of the topological string wa…
A detailed study of the modified gravity, f(R) models is performed, using that the Noether point symmetries of these models are geometric symmetries of the mini superspace of the theory. It is shown that the requirement that the field equations admit Noether point symmetries selects definite models in a self-consistent way. As an application in Cosmology we consider the Friedman -Robertson-Walker spacetime and show that the only cosmological model which is integrable via Noether point symmetries is the $(R^{b}-2Λ) ^{c}$ model, which generalizes the Lambda Cosmology. Furthermore using the corre…
