Magnetospheres of neutron stars are anchored in the rigid crust and can be twisted by sudden crustal motions ("starquakes"). The twisted magnetosphere does not remain static and gradually untwists, dissipating magnetic energy and producing radiation. The equation describing this evolution is derived, and its solutions are presented. Two distinct regions coexist in untwisting magnetospheres: a potential region where curl(B)=0 ("cavity") and a current-carrying bundle of field lines ("j-bundle"). The cavity has a sharp boundary, which expands with time and eventually erases all of the twist. In this process, the electric current of the j-bundle is sucked into the star. Observational appearance of the untwisting process is discussed. A hot spot forms at the footprints of the j-bundle. The spot shrinks with time toward the magnetic dipole axis, and its luminosity and temperature gradually decrease. As the j-bundle shrinks, the amplitude of its twist can grow to the maximum possible value ~ 1. The strong twist near the dipole axis increases the spindown rate of the star and can generate a broad beam of radio emission. The model explains the puzzling behavior of magnetar XTE J1810-197 -- a canonical example of magnetospheric evolution following a starquake. We also discuss implications for other magnetars. The untwisting theory suggests that the nonthermal radiation of magnetars is preferentially generated on a bundle of extended closed field lines near the dipole axis.
We generalize a formula for the Goldreich-Julian charge density (ρ), originally derived for rotating neutron star, for arbitrary oscillations of a neutron star with arbitrary magnetic field configuration under assumption of low current density in the inner parts of the magnetosphere. As an application we consider toroidal oscillation of a neutron star with dipole magnetic field and calculate energy losses. For some oscillation modes the longitudinal electric field can not be canceled by putting charged particles in the magnetosphere without a presence of strong electric current j = (c/(ωr))ρc.…
We show that the interaction of an accretion disk with the magnetosphere of a neutron star can excite resonant shear Alfven waves with Hz-kHz frequencies in a region of enhanced density gradients. This is the the region where accretion material flows along the magnetic field lines in the magnetosphere. We argue that due to the pressure anisotropy produced by the plasma flow, firehose instabilities are likely to occur. Furthermore, for a dipolar field topology, we show that a new instability develops due to both magnetic field curvature and the plasma flow.
Impact of supernova explosion on the neutron star magnetosphere in a massive binary system is considered. The supernova shock striking the NS magnetosphere filled with plasma can lead to the formation of a magnetospheric tail with significant magnetic energy. The magnetic field reconnection in the current sheet formed can convert the magnetic energy stored in the tail into kinetic energy of accelerated charged particles. Plasma instabilities excited by beams of relativistic particles can lead to the formation of a short pulse of coherent radio emission with parameters similar to those of the o…
In this paper we propose a new model for quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) based on oscillating magnetohydrodynamic modes in neutron star magnetospheres. We argue that the interaction of the accretion disk with the magnetosphere can excite resonant shear Alfv`en waves in a region of enhanced density gradients, the region where accretion material flows along the magnetic field lines in the magnetosphere. We demonstrate that depending on the distance of this region from the star and the magnetic field strength, the frequency of the field line resonance can range from several Hz (weaker field, f…
We present a time-dependent model of the interaction between a neutron star magnetosphere and a thin (Shakura-Sunyaev) accretion disc, where the extent of the magnetosphere is determined by balancing outward diffusion and inward advection of the stellar magnetic field at the inner edge of the disc. The nature of the equilibria available to the system is governed by the magnetic Prandtl number Pm and the ratio ξof the corotation radius to the Alfven radius. For ξ> Pm^0.3, the system can occupy one of two stable states, where the torques are of opposite signs. If the star is spinning up initiall…
The luminosity and structure of neutron star magnetospheres are crucial to our understanding of pulsar and plerion emission. A solution found using the force-free approximation would be an interesting standard with which any model with more physics could be compared. Prior quasi-analytic force-free solutions may not be stable, while prior time-dependent magnetohydrodynamic models used unphysical model parameters. We use a time-dependent relativistic force-free electrodynamics code with no free parameters to find a unique stationary solution for the axisymmetric rotating pulsar magnetosphere in…
In this paper we present the results of time-dependent simulations of dipolar axisymmetric magnetospheres of neutron stars carried out both within the framework of relativistic magnetohydrodynamics and within the framework of resistive force-free electrodynamics. The results of force-free simulations reveal the inability of our numerical method to accommodate the equatorial current sheets of pulsar magnetospheres and raise a question mark over the robustness of this approach. On the other hand, the MHD approach allows to make a significant progress. We start with a nonrotating magnetically dom…
We investigate the self-consistent electrodynamic structure of a particle accelerator in the Crab pulsar magnetosphere on the two-dimensional poloidal plane, solving the Poisson equation for the electrostatic potential together with the Boltzmann equations for electrons, positrons and gamma-rays. If the trans-field thickness of the gap is thin, the created current density becomes sub-Goldreich-Julian, giving the traditional outer-gap solution but with negligible gamma-ray luminosity. As the thickness increases, the created current increases to become super-Goldreich-Julian, giving a new gap so…
The accretion induced neutron star magnetic field evolution is studied through considering the accretion flow to drag the field lines aside and dilute the polar field strength, and as a result the equatorial field strength increases and is buried inside the crust. The main conclusions of model are as follows: (i) the polar field decays with increasing the accreted mass; (ii) The bottom magnetic field strength of about $10^8$ G can occur when neutron star magnetosphere radius approaches the star radius, which depends on the accretion rate as $\mdot^{1/2}$; (iii) The neutron star magnetosphere r…
Selfconsistent magnetospheres of rotating cosmic magnets (neutron stars/pulsars) with arbitrary inclination of the magnetic against the rotation axis are considered. Present studies concentrate on the regime dominated by the force--free surface (FFS). A macroscopic fluid description is applied and radiation reaction is taken into account. As in earlier work of our group, a 'standard set of parameters' is used. Under these conditions, the following features are found among other results: global charge separation exists for all degrees of inclination of the magnetic against the rotation axis; cl…
The energy source of a pulsar's non-thermal emission is the rotational energy loss of the neutron star. The rotational energy of the neutron star is transformed into the pulsar radiation by a long sequence of processes. The processes of this sequence are discussed.
Resonant cyclotron scattering of the surface radiation in the magnetospheres of neutron stars may considerably modify the emergent spectra and impede efforts to constraint neutron star properties. Resonant cyclotron scattering by a non-relativistic warm plasma in an inhomogeneous magnetic field has a number of unusual characteristics: (i) in the limit of high resonant optical depth, the cyclotron resonant layer is half opaque, in sharp contrast to the case of non-resonant scattering. (ii) The transmitted flux is on average Compton up-scattered by ~ $1+ 2 beta_T$, where $β_T$ is the typical the…
In the presence of strong magnetic fields, the vacuum becomes a birefringent medium. We show that this QED effect couples the direction of the polarization of photons leaving the NS surface, to the direction of the magnetic field along the ray's path. We analyze the consequences that this effect has on aligning the polarization vectors to generate large net polarizations, while considering thermal radiation originating from a thermal hydrogen atmosphere. Counter to previous predictions, we show that the thermal radiation should be highly polarized even in the optical. When detected, this polar…
We propose a new method to detect observational appearance of Dark Matter axions. The method utilizes observations of neutron stars (NSs) in radio. It is based on the conversion of axions to photons in strong magnetic fields of NSs (Primakoff effect). Whether the conversion takes place, the radio spectrum of the object would have a very distinctive feature -- a narrow spike at a frequency corresponding to the rest mass of the axion. For example, if the coupling constant of the photon-axion interaction is $M=10^{10}$ GeV, the density of Dark Matter axions is $ρ=10^{-24} {\rm g cm^{-3}}$, and th…
A number of disparate observational and theoretical pieces of evidence indicate that, contrary to the conventional wisdom, neutron stars' closed field lines are populated by dense, hot plasma and may be responsible for producing some radio and high energy emission. This conclusion is based on eclipse modeling of the binary pulsar system PSR J0737-3039A/B (Lyutikov & Thompson 2005), a quantitative theory of Crab giant pulses (Lyutikov 2007) and a number of theoretical works related to production of non-thermal spectra in magnetars through resonant scattering. In magnetars, dense pair plasma is …
A self-consistent electrodynamics of a particle accelerator in a rotating neutron-star magnetosphere is investigated on the two-dimensional poloidal plane. Solving the Poisson equation for the electrostatic potential together with the Boltzmann equations for electrons, positrons and gamma-rays, it is demonstrated that the created current density increases to be super-Goldreich-Julian if the trans-field thickness of the gap becomes thick enough. This new solution exists from the neutron-star surface to the outer magnetosphere with a small-amplitude positive acceleration field in the inner part,…
In the presence of strong magnetic fields, the vacuum becomes a birefringent medium. We show that this QED effect decouples the polarization modes of photons leaving the NS surface. Both the total intensity and the intensity in each of the two modes is preserved along a ray's path through the neutron-star magnetosphere. We analyze the consequences that this effect has on aligning the observed polarization vectors across the image of the stellar surface to generate large net polarizations. Counter to previous predictions, we show that the thermal radiation of NSs should be highly polarized even…
We study the propagation of polarization light through the magnetosphere of neutron stars. At intermediate frequencies (the optical through the infrared), both the birefringence induced by the plasma and by quantumelectrodynamics influence the observation polarization of radiation from the surface of the neutron star. Because these two processes compete in this regime, we find that polarization observations can constrain the properties of the neutron-star magnetosphere, specifically the total charge density. We calculate both the phase-resolved and the phase-averaged polarization signatures in…
In this study we propose a new generic model for QPOs based on oscillation modes of neutron star magnetospheres. We argue that the interaction of the accretion disk with the magnetosphere can excite resonant shear Alfven waves in a region of enhanced density gradients. We demonstrate that depending on the distance of this enhanced density region from the star and the magnetic field strength, the frequency of the field line resonance can range from several Hz (weaker field, farther from star), to approximately kHz frequencies (stronger field, ~ 2-10 star radii from the star). We show that such …
Just as a rotating magnetised neutron star has material pulled away from its surface to populate a magnetosphere, a similar process can occur as a result of neutron-star pulsations rather than rotation. This is of interest in connection with the overall study of neutron star oscillation modes but with a particular focus on the situation for magnetars. Following a previous Newtonian analysis of the production of a force-free magnetosphere in this way Timokhin et al. (2000), we present here a corresponding general-relativistic analysis. We give a derivation of the general relativistic Maxwell eq…
A synthesis of the present knowledge on gamma-ray emission from the magnetosphere of a rapidly rotating neutron star is presented, focusing on the electrodynamics of particle accelerators. The combined curvature, synchrotron, and inverse-Compton emission from ultra-relativistic positrons and electrons, which are created by two-photon and/or one-photon pair creation processes, or emitted from the neutron-star surface, provide us with essential information on the properties of the accelerator -- electric potential drop along the magnetic field lines. A new accelerator model, which is a mixture o…
We consider the interface between an accretion disk and a magnetosphere surrounding the accreting mass. We argue that such an interface can occur not only with a magnetized neutron star but also sometimes with an unmagnetized neutron star or a black hole. The gas at the magnetospheric interface is generally Rayleigh-Taylor unstable and may also be Kelvin-Helmholtz unstable. Because of these instabilities, modes with low azimuthal wavenumbers m are expected to grow to large amplitude. It is proposed that the resulting nonaxisymmetric structures contribute to the high frequency quasi-periodic os…
The recent discovery of the first known accretion-powered millisecond pulsar with the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer provides the first direct probe of the interaction of an accretion disk with the magnetic field of a weakly magnetic (B<10^10 G) neutron star. We demonstrate that the presence of coherent pulsations from a weakly magnetic neutron star over a wide range of accretion rates places strong constraints on models of the disk-magnetosphere interaction. We argue that the simple Mdot^(3/7) scaling law for the Keplerian frequency at the magnetic interaction radius, widely used to model disk a…
We present the results of 2.5-dimensional resistive magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations of the magnetic interaction between a weakly magnetized neutron star and its accretion disk. General relativistic effects are simulated by using the pseudo-Newtonian potential. We find that well-collimated jets traveling along the rotation axis of the disk are formed by the following mechanism: (1) The magnetic loops connecting the neutron star and the disk are twisted due to the differential rotation between the neutron star and the disk. (2) Twist injection from the disk initiates expansion of the loop.…
Combining resolved spectroscopy with deep imaging, XMM-Newton is providing new insights on the particle acceleration processes long known to be at work in the magnetospheres of isolated neutron stars. According to a standard theoretical interpretation, in neutron stars' magnetospheres particles are accelerated along the B field lines and, depending on their charge, they can either move outward, to propagate in space, or be funnelled back, towards the star surface. While particles impinging on the neutron star surface should heat it at well defined spots, outgoing ones could radiate extended fe…
Accretion of interstellar material by an isolated neutron star is discussed. The point I address here is the interaction between the accretion flow and the stellar magnetosphere. I show that the interchange instabilities of the magnetospheric boundary under the conditions of interest are basically suppressed. The entry of the material into the magnetosphere is governed by diffusion. Due to this reason the persistent accretion luminosity of isolated neutron stars is limited to < 4E+26 erg/s. These objects can also appear as X-ray bursters with the burst durations of about 30 minutes and repetit…
Observational appearance of a neutron star in the subsonic propeller state which is a companion of a wind-fed mass-exchange close binary system is discussed. During the subsonic propeller state the neutron star magnetosphere is surrounded by a spherical quasi-static plasma envelope, which is extended from the magnetospheric boundary up to the star accretion radius. The energy input to the envelope due to the propeller action by the neutron star exceeds the radiative losses and the plasma temperature in the envelope is of the order of the free-fall temperature. Under this condition the magnetos…
It is suggested in this paper that the `bare' strange star might be not bare, and there could be a magnetosphere around it. As a strange star might be an intensely magnetized rotator, the induced unipolar electric field would be large enough to construct a magnetosphere around the strange matter core. This kind of magnetosphere is very similar to that of the rotating magnetized neutron stars discussed by many authors. A magnetosphere will be established very soon through pair production by gamma-B or two photon processes after a strange star was born in a supernova explosion. It is emphasized …
We study the wave propagation modes in the relativistic streaming pair plasma of the magnetospheres of pulsars and magnetars, focusing on the effect of vacuum polarization. We show that the combined plasma and vacuum polarization effects give rise to a vacuum resonance, where ``avoided mode crossing'' occurs between the extraordinary mode and the (superluminous) ordinary mode. When a photon propagates from the vacuum-polarization-dominated region at small radii to the plasma-dominated region at large radii, its polarization state may undergo significant change across the vacuum resonance. We m…
We carried out two dimensional high-resolution magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations of an accretion disk around a weakly magnetized neutron star. General relativistic effects are taken into account by using pseudo-Newtonian potential of Paczýnski, B., P. J. Witta (1980). When magnetic loops connect the neutron star and the accretion disk, the twist injection from the disk or from the rotating neutron star triggers expansion of the loops. Since the expanding magnetic loops prevent inflow toward the magnetic poles of the neutron star, disk matter accumulates on the boundary between the magnetos…
Particle acceleration by electrostatic polarization fields that arise in plasmas streaming across magnetic fields is discussed as a possible acceleration mechanism of highest-energy cosmic rays. Specifically, plasmoids arising in planetoid impacts onto neutron star magnetospheres are considered. We find that such impacts at plausible rates may account for the observed flux and energy spectrum of the highest energy cosmic rays.
We study magnetospheric structure surrounding rotating magnetized neutron star with nonvanishing NUT (Newman-Tamburino-Unti) parameter. For the simplicity of calculations Goldreich-Julian charge density is analyzed for the aligned neutron star with zero inclination between magnetic field, gravitomagnetic field and rotation axis. From the system of Maxwell equations in spacetime of slowly rotating NUT star, second-order differential equation for electrostatic potential is derived. Analytical solution of this equation indicates the general relativistic modification of an accelerating electric fi…
Pulsar "standard model" of rotating magnetized conducting sphere surrounded by plasma is generalized in its essential parts for the case of oscillating star. Goldreich-Julian charge density, electromagnetic energy losses as well as polar cap scenario of particle accelerations are considered. Despite similarities, there are substantial differences between magnetospheres of rotating and oscillating stars. Distortion of particle acceleration mechanism in radiopulsars by neutron star oscillations, excited by a strong glitch, for example, is discussed.
We consider the electron-positron plasma generation processes in the magnetospheres of magnetars - neutron stars with strong surface magnetic fields, B = 10^(14) - 10^(15) G. We show that the photon splitting in a magnetic field, which is effective at large field strengths, does not lead to the suppression of plasma multiplication, but manifests itself in a high polarization of gamma-ray photons. A high magnetic field strength does not give rise to the second generation of particles produced by synchrotron photons. However, the density of the first-generation particles produced by curvature ph…
