In this paper we provide an achievable rate region for the discrete memoryless multiple access channel with correlated state information known non-causally at the encoders using a random binning technique. This result is a generalization of the random binning technique used by Gel'fand and Pinsker for the problem with non-causal channel state information at the encoder in point to point communication.
In this paper we consider the achievable rate region of the Gaussian Multiple Access Channel (MAC) when suboptimal transmission schemes are employed. Focusing on the two-user MAC and assuming uncoded Pulse Amplitude Modulation (PAM), we derive a rate region that is a pentagon, and propose a strategy with which it can be achieved. We also compare the region with outer bounds and with orthogonal transmission.
This is a companion technical report of the main manuscript "Physical-Layer Multicasting by Stochastic Transmit Beamforming and Alamouti Space-Time Coding". The report serves to give detailed derivations of the achievable rate functions encountered in the main manuscript, which are too long to be included in the latter. In addition, more simulation results are presented to verify the viability of the multicast schemes developed in the main manuscript.
In this paper, we investigate achievable rates on the multiple access channel with feedback and correlated sources (MACFCS). The motivation for studying the MACFCS stems from the fact that in a sensor network, sensors collect and transmit correlated data to a common sink. We derive two achievable rate regions for the three-node MACFCS.
We consider a two user fading Multiple Access Channel with a wire-tapper (MAC-WT) where the transmitter has the channel state information (CSI) to the intended receiver but not to the eavesdropper (eve). We provide an achievable secrecy sum-rate with optimal power control. We next provide a secrecy sum-rate with optimal power control and cooperative jamming (CJ). We then study an achievable secrecy sum rate by employing an ON/OFF power control scheme which is more easily computable. We also employ CJ over this power control scheme. Results show that CJ boosts the secrecy sum-rate significantly…
In this paper, we study the achievable rate region of Gaussian multiuser channels with the messages transmitted being from finite input alphabets and the outputs being {\em quantized at the receiver}. In particular, we focus on the achievable rate region of $i)$ Gaussian broadcast channel (GBC) and $ii)$ Gaussian multiple access channel (GMAC). First, we study the achievable rate region of two-user GBC when the messages to be transmitted to both the users take values from finite signal sets and the received signal is quantized at both the users. We refer to this channel as {\em quantized broad…
The problem of reliable communication over the multiple-access channel (MAC) with states is investigated. We propose a new coding scheme for this problem which uses quasi-group codes (QGC). We derive a new computable single-letter characterization of the achievable rate region. As an example, we investigate the problem of doubly-dirty MAC with modulo-$4$ addition. It is shown that the sum-rate $R_1+R_2=1$ bits per channel use is achievable using the new scheme. Whereas, the natural extension of the Gel'fand-Pinsker scheme, sum-rates greater than $0.32$ are not achievable.
In this paper, we establish achievable rate regions for the multiple access channel (MAC) with side information partially known (estimated or sensed version) at the transmitters. Actually, we extend the lattice strategies used by Philosof-Zamir for the MAC with full side information at the transmitters to the partially known case. We show that the sensed or estimated side information reduces the rate regions, the same as that occurs for Costa Gaussian channel.
Future networks are expected to connect an enormous number of nodes wirelessly using wide-band transmission. This brings great challenges. To avoid collecting a large amount of data from the massive number of nodes, computation over multi-access channel (CoMAC) is proposed to compute a desired function over the air utilizing the signal-superposition property of MAC. Due to frequency selective fading, wide-band CoMAC is more challenging and has never been studied before. In this work, we propose the use of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) in wide-band CoMAC to transmit function…
We study deterministic approximations of the Gaussian two-user multiple access wiretap channel (G-MAC-WT) and the Gaussian wiretap channel with a helper (G-WT-H). These approximations enable results beyond the recently shown 2/3 and 1/2 secure degrees of freedom (s.d.o.f.) for the G-MAC-WT and the G-WT-H, respectively. While the s.d.o.f. were obtained by real interference alignment, our approach uses signal-scale alignment. We show achievable schemes which are independent of the rationality of the channel gains. Moreover, our results can differentiate between channel strengths, in particular b…
This paper provides comprehensive coding and outer bound for the half-duplex multiple access channel with generalized feedback (MAC-GF). Two users communicate with one destination over a discrete memoryless channel using time division. Each transmission block is divided into 3 time slots with variable durations: the destination is always in receive mode, while each user alternatively transmits and receives during the first 2 time slots, then both cooperate to send information during the last one. The paper proposes two decode-forward based coding schemes, analyzes their rate regions, and also …
We propose a new coding scheme for the discrete memoryless two-user multi-access channel (MAC) with rate-limited feedback. Our scheme combines ideas from the Venkataramanan-Pradhan scheme for perfect feedback with ideas from the Shaviv-Steinberg scheme for rate-limited feedback. Our achievable region includes the Shaviv-Steinberg achievable region and this inclusion can be strict. For general MACs and for sufficiently large feedback rates, our scheme outperforms the Shaviv-Steinberg scheme as it achieves the same rate region as the Venkataramanan-Pradhan scheme for perfect feedback (which cann…
This paper investigates the secrecy capacity region of multiple access wiretap (MAC-WT) channels where, besides confidential messages, the users have also open messages to transmit. All these messages are intended for the legitimate receiver (or Bob for brevity) but only the confidential messages need to be protected from the eavesdropper (Eve). We first consider a discrete memoryless (DM) MAC-WT channel where both Bob and Eve jointly decode their interested messages. By using random coding, we find an achievable rate region, within which perfect secrecy can be realized, i.e., all users can co…
In this paper, the multiple access channel (MAC) with channel state is analyzed in a scenario where a) the channel state is known non-causally to the transmitters and b) there is perfect causal feedback from the receiver to the transmitters. An achievable region and an outer bound are found for a discrete memoryless MAC that extend existing results, bringing together ideas from the two separate domains of MAC with state and MAC with feedback. Although this achievable region does not match the outer bound in general, special cases where they meet are identified. In the case of a Gaussian MAC, a…
Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) represent a new technology that can shape the radio wave propagation and thus offers a great variety of possible performance and implementation gains. Motivated by this, we investigate the achievable sum-rate optimization in a broadcast channel (BC) that is equipped with an RIS. We exploit the well-known duality between the Gaussian multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) BC and multiple-access channel (MAC) to derive an alternating optimization (AO) algorithm which optimizes the users' covariance matrices and the RIS phase shifts in the dual MAC. The o…
Exponential error bounds achievable by universal coding and decoding are derived for frame-asynchronous discrete memoryless %asynchronous multiple access channels with two senders, via the method of subtypes, a refinement of the method of types. Maximum empirical multi-information decoding is employed. A key tool is an improved packing lemma, that overcomes the technical difficulty caused by codeword repetitions, via an induction based new argument. The asymptotic form of the bounds admits numerical evaluation. This demostrates that error exponents achievable by synchronous transmission (if po…
A new single-letter achievable rate region is proposed for the two-user discrete memoryless multiple-access channel(MAC) with noiseless feedback. The proposed region includes the Cover-Leung rate region [1], and it is shown that the inclusion is strict. The proof uses a block-Markov superposition strategy based on the observation that the messages of the two users are correlated given the feedback. The rates of transmission are too high for each encoder to decode the other's message directly using the feedback, so they transmit correlated information in the next block to learn the message of o…
The problem of three-user multiple-access channel (MAC) with noiseless feedback is investigated. A new coding strategy is presented. The coding scheme builds upon the natural extension of the Cover-Leung (CL) scheme; and uses quasi-linear codes. A new single-letter achievable rate region is derived. The new achievable region strictly contains the CL region. This is shown through an example. In this example, the coding scheme achieves optimality in terms of transmission rates. It is shown that any optimality achieving scheme for this example must have a specific algebraic structure. Particularl…
Machine learning is used to compute achievable information rates (AIRs) for a simplified fiber channel. The approach jointly optimizes the input distribution (constellation shaping) and the auxiliary channel distribution to compute AIRs without explicit channel knowledge in an end-to-end fashion.
This paper investigates the capacity region of a discrete memoryless (DM) multiple access wiretap (MAC-WT) channel where, besides confidential messages, the users have also open messages to transmit. All these messages are intended for the legitimate receiver but only the confidential messages need to be protected from the eavesdropper. By using random coding, we find an achievable secrecy rate region, within which perfect secrecy can be realized, i.e., all users can communicate with the legitimate receiver with arbitrarily small probability of error, while the confidential information leaked …
We consider a MIMO fading broadcast channel and compute achievable ergodic rates when channel state information is acquired at the receivers via downlink training and it is provided to the transmitter by channel state feedback. Unquantized (analog) and quantized (digital) channel state feedback schemes are analyzed and compared under various assumptions. Digital feedback is shown to be potentially superior when the feedback channel uses per channel state coefficient is larger than 1. Also, we show that by proper design of the digital feedback link, errors in the feedback have a minor effect ev…
The two-user Multiple Access Channel (MAC) with cooperative encoders and Channel State Information (CSI) is considered where two different scenarios are investigated: A two-user MAC with common message (MACCM) and a two-user MAC with conferencing encoders (MACCE). For both situations, the two cases where the CSI is known to the encoders either non-causally or causally are studied. Achievable rate regions are established for both discrete memoryless channels and Gaussian channels with additive interference. The achievable rate regions derived for the Gaussian models with additive interference k…
In this paper, we study single transceiver passive RFID networks by modeling the underlying physical system as a special cascade of a certain broadcast channel (BCC) and a multiple access channel (MAC), using a "nested codebook" structure in between. The particular application differentiates this communication setup from an ordinary cascade of a BCC and a MAC, and requires certain structures such as "nested codebooks", impurity channels or additional power constraints. We investigate this problem both for discrete alphabets, where we characterize the achievable rate region, as well as for cont…
This paper investigates the achievable total degrees of freedom (DoF) of the MIMO multi-way relay channel that consists of K users, where each user is equipped with M antennas, and a decode-and-forward relay equipped with N antennas. In this channel, each user wants to convey K-1 private messages to the other users in addition to a common message to all of them. Due to the absence of direct links between the users, communication occurs through the relay in two phases; a multiple access channel phase (MAC) and a broadcast (BC) phase. We drive cut-set bounds on the total DoF of the network, and …
Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) represent a new technology that can shape the radio wave propagation and thus offers a great variety of possible performance and implementation gains. Motivated by this, we investigate the achievable sum-rate optimization in a broadcast channel (BC) in the presence of RISs. We solve this problem by exploiting the well-known duality between the Gaussian multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) BC and the multiple-access channel (MAC), and we correspondingly derive three algorithms which optimize the users' covariance matrices and the RIS phase shifts in t…
Cooperation in clouds provides a promising technique for 5G wireless networks, supporting higher data rates. Security of data transmission over wireless clouds could put constraints on devices; whether to cooperate or not. Therefore, our aim is to provide analytical framework for the security on the physical layer of such setup and to define the constraints embodied with cooperation in small size wireless clouds. In this paper, two legitimate transmitters Alice and John cooperate to increase the reliable transmission rate received by their common legitimate receiver Bob, where one eavesdropper…
In this work we show how an improved lower bound to the error exponent of the memoryless multiple-access (MAC) channel is attained via the use of linear codes, thus demonstrating that structure can be beneficial even in cases where there is no capacity gain. We show that if the MAC channel is modulo-additive, then any error probability, and hence any error exponent, achievable by a linear code for the corresponding single-user channel, is also achievable for the MAC channel. Specifically, for an alphabet of prime cardinality, where linear codes achieve the best known exponents in the single-us…
In this paper, a two-user discrete memoryless multiple-access channel (DM-MAC) with correlated channel states, each known at one of the encoders is considered, in which each encoder transmits independent messages and tries to cooperate with the other one. To consider cooperating encoders, it is assumed that each encoder strictly-causally receives and learns the other encoder's transmitted symbols and tries to cooperate with the other encoder by transmitting its message. Next, we study this channel in a special case; we assume that the common part of both states is known at both, hence encoders…
New achievable rate regions are derived for the two-user additive white Gaussian multiple-access channel with noisy feedback. The regions exhibit the following two properties. Irrespective of the (finite) Gaussian feedback-noise variances, the regions include rate points that lie outside the no-feedback capacity region, and when the feedback-noise variances tend to 0 the regions converge to the perfect-feedback capacity region. The new achievable regions also apply to the partial-feedback setting where one of the transmitters has a noisy feedback link and the other transmitter has no feedback …
Consider a receiver in a multi-user network that wishes to decode several messages. Simultaneous joint typicality decoding is one of the most powerful techniques for determining the fundamental limits at which reliable decoding is possible. This technique has historically been used in conjunction with random i.i.d. codebooks to establish achievable rate regions for networks. Recently, it has been shown that, in certain scenarios, nested linear codebooks in conjunction with "single-user" or sequential decoding can yield better achievable rates. For instance, the compute-forward problem examines…
Effective capacity, which provides the maximum constant arrival rate that a given service process can support while satisfying statistical delay constraints, is analyzed in a multiuser scenario. In particular, we study the achievable effective capacity region of the users in multiaccess fading channels (MAC) in the presence of quality of service (QoS) constraints. We assume that channel side information (CSI) is available at both the transmitters and the receiver, and superposition coding technique with successive decoding is used. When the power is fixed at the transmitters, we show that vary…
We take two new approaches to design efficient algorithms for transmitter optimization under rate constraints to guarantee the Quality of Service in general MIMO interference networks, named B-MAC Networks, which is a combination of multiple interfering broadcast channels (BC) and multiaccess channels (MAC). Two related optimization problems, maximizing the minimum of weighted rates under a sum-power constraint and minimizing the sum-power under rate constraints, are considered. The first approach takes advantage of existing efficient algorithms for SINR problems by building a bridge between r…
In this technical report, the capacity region of the two-user linear deterministic (LD) interference channel with noisy output feedback (IC-NOF) is fully characterized. This result allows the identification of several asymmetric scenarios in which implementing channel-output feedback in only one of the transmitter-receiver pairs is as beneficial as implementing it in both links, in terms of achievable individual rate and sum-rate improvements w.r.t. the case without feedback. In other scenarios, the use of channel-output feedback in any of the transmitter-receiver pairs benefits only one of th…
We consider a single-antenna Gaussian multiple-access channel (MAC) with a multiple-antenna amplify-and-forward (AF) relay, where, contrary to many previous works, also the direct links between transmitters and receiver are taken into account. For this channel, we investigate two transmit schemes: Sending and relaying all signals jointly or using a time-division multiple-access (TDMA) structure, where only one transmitter uses the channel at a time. While the optimal relaying matrices and time slot durations are found for the latter scheme, we provide upper and lower bounds on the achievable s…
In this paper we study the maximum throughput achievable with optimal scheduling in multi-hop networks with highly directive antenna arrays capable of Space Division Multiplexing (SDM) at the transmitter and Space Division Multiple Access (SDMA) at the receiver. This network model is relevant for future millimeter wave (mmWave) systems, which are expected to implement self-backhauled cellular networks with very high data rates, relying on carrier frequencies between 10-300 GHz, channels with a very large bandwidth, and a large number of antenna elements, even in mobile devices. We adapt mmWave…
In this paper we present a measurement set-up for massive MIMO channel sounding that shows very good long-term phase stability. Initial measurements were performed in a residential area to evaluate different conventional precoding schemes such as maximum ratio transmission and phase only precoding. A massive amount of data points was collected, with 924 times 64 complex channel weights per data point. Each data point is position-tagged using differential GPS with real-time kinematik, achieving better than 35cm position accuracy in more than 90% of the collected data points, making this dataset…
We establish a multi-user extrinsic information transfer (EXIT) chart area theorem for the interleave-division multiple-access (IDMA) scheme, a special form of superposition coding, in multiple access channels (MACs). A low-cost multi-user detection (MUD) based on the Gaussian approximation (GA) is assumed. The evolution of mean-square errors (MSE) of the GA-based MUD during iterative processing is studied. We show that the K-dimensional tuples formed by the MSEs of K users constitute a conservative vector field. The achievable rate is a potential function of this conservative field, so it is …

This paper provides a numerical framework for computing the achievable rate region of memoryless multiple access channel (MAC) with a continuous alphabet from data. In particular, we use recent results on variational lower bounds on mutual information and KL-divergence to compute the boundaries of the rate region of MAC using a set of functions parameterized by neural networks. Our method relies on a variational lower bound on KL-divergence and an upper bound on KL-divergence based on the f-divergence inequalities. Unlike previous work, which computes an estimate on mutual information, which i…
Communication networks have multiple users, each sending and receiving messages. A multiple access channel (MAC) models multiple senders transmitting to a single receiver, such as the uplink from many mobile phones to a single base station. The optimal performance of a MAC is quantified by a capacity region of simultaneously achievable communication rates. We study the two-sender classical MAC, the simplest and best-understood network, and find a surprising richness in both a classical and quantum context. First, we find that quantum entanglement shared between senders can substantially boost …
We use the idea of dependence balance to obtain a new outer bound for the capacity region of the discrete memoryless multiple access channel with noiseless feedback (MAC-FB). We consider a binary additive noisy MAC-FB whose feedback capacity is not known. The binary additive noisy MAC considered in this paper can be viewed as the discrete counterpart of the Gaussian MAC-FB. Ozarow established that the capacity region of the two-user Gaussian MAC-FB is given by the cut-set bound. Our result shows that for the discrete version of the channel considered by Ozarow, this is not the case. Direct eva…
This paper addresses the fundamental characteristics of information exchange via multihop network coding over two-way relaying in a wireless ad hoc network. The end-to-end rate regions achieved by time-division multihop (TDMH), MAC-layer network coding (MLNC) and PHY-layer network coding (PLNC) are first characterized. It is shown that MLNC does not always achieve better rates than TDMH, time sharing between TDMH and MLNC is able to achieve a larger rate region, and PLNC dominates the rate regions achieved by TDMH and MLNC. An opportunistic scheduling algorithm for MLNC and PLNC is then propos…
We consider the achievable average rates of a multiple-access system, which consists of N energy-harvesting users (EHUs) that transmit information over a block fading multiple-access channel (MAC) and a base station (BS) that broadcasts radio frequency (RF) energy to the EHUs for wireless power transfer. The information (over the uplink) and power (over the downlink) can be transmitted either in time division duplex or frequency division duplex. For the case when the EHUs battery capacities and the number of transmission slots are both infinite, we determine the optimal power allocation for th…
In this paper, it is shown that for any given single-hop communication network with two receivers, splitting messages into more than two sub-messages in a random coding scheme is redundant. To this end, the Broadcast Channel with Cognitive Relays (BCCR) is considered. A novel achievability scheme is designed for this network. Our achievability design is derived by a systematic combination of the best known achievability schemes for the basic building blocks included in the network: the Han-Kobayashi scheme for the two-user interference channel and the Marton coding scheme for the broadcast cha…
Consider the problem of Private Information Retrieval (PIR), where a user wishes to retrieve a single message from $N$ non-communicating and non-colluding databases (servers). All servers store the same set of $M$ messages and they respond to the user through a block fading Gaussian Multiple Access Channel (MAC). The goal in this setting is to keep the index of the required message private from the servers while minimizing the overall communication overhead. This work provides joint privacy and channel coding retrieval schemes for the Gaussian MAC with and without fading. The schemes exploit t…
Building upon previous work on the relation between secrecy and channel resolvability, we revisit a secrecy proof for the multiple-access channel from the perspective of resolvability. We then refine the approach in order to obtain some novel results on the second-order achievable rates.
This paper presents a joint typicality framework for encoding and decoding nested linear codes for multi-user networks. This framework provides a new perspective on compute-forward within the context of discrete memoryless networks. In particular, it establishes an achievable rate region for computing the weighted sum of nested linear codewords over a discrete memoryless multiple-access channel (MAC). When specialized to the Gaussian MAC, this rate region recovers and improves upon the lattice-based compute-forward rate region of Nazer and Gastpar, thus providing a unified approach for discret…
In this work, we prove that a positive secure degree of freedom is achievable for a large class of Gaussian channels as long as the channel is not degraded and the channel is fully connected. This class includes the MAC wire-tap channel, the 2-user interference channel with confidential messages, the 2-user interference channel with an external eavesdropper. Best known achievable schemes to date for these channels use Gaussian signaling. In this work, we show that structured codes outperform Gaussian random codes at high SNR when channel gains are real numbers.
In this paper, we investigate the effects of an additional trusted relay node on the secrecy of multiple-access wiretap channel (MAC-WT) by considering the model of multiple-access relay wiretap channel (MARC-WT). More specifically, first, we investigate the discrete memoryless MARC-WT. Three inner bounds (with respect to decode-forward (DF), noise-forward (NF) and compress-forward (CF) strategies) on the secrecy capacity region are provided. Second, we investigate the degraded discrete memoryless MARC-WT, and present an outer bound on the secrecy capacity region of this degraded model. Finall…
Heterogeneous networks are a flexible deployment model that rely on low power nodes to improve the user broadband experience in a cost effective manner. Femtocells are an integral part of heterogeneous networks, whose main purpose is to improve the indoor capacity. When restricting access to home users, femtocells cause a substantial interference problem that cannot be mitigated through coordination with the macrocell base station. In this paper, we analyze multiple antenna communication on the downlink of a macrocell network, with femtocell overlay. We evaluate the feasibility of limited feed…
Ambient backscatter is an intriguing wireless communication paradigm that allows small devices to compute and communicate by using only the power they harvest from radio-frequency (RF) signals in the air. Ambient backscattering devices reflect existing RF signals emitted by legacy communications systems, such as digital TV broadcasting, cellular or Wi-Fi ones, which would be otherwise treated as harmful sources of interference. This paper deals with the ultimate performance limits of ambient backscatter systems in broadband fading environments, by considering different amounts of network state…
This paper studies the random-coding exponent of joint source-channel coding for the multiple-access channel with correlated sources. For each user, by defining a threshold, the messages of each source are partitioned into two classes. The achievable exponent for correlated sources with two message-dependent input distributions for each user is determined and shown to be larger than that achieved using only one input distribution for each user. A system of equations is presented to determine the optimal thresholds maximizing the achievable exponent. The obtained exponent is compared with the o…
This paper investigates the joint source-channel coding problem of sending two correlated memoryless sources with common part over a memoryless multiple access channel (MAC). An inner bound and two outer bounds on the achievable distortion region are derived. In particular, they respectively recover the existing bounds for several special cases, such as communication without common part, lossless communication, and noiseless communication. When specialized to quadratic Gaussian communication case, transmitting Gaussian sources with Gaussian common part over Gaussian MAC, the inner bound and ou…
