We suggest predictive scenarios for neutrino masses which provide a common origin for CP violation in early universe cosmology and in neutrino oscillations. Our setup is the seesaw mechanism in the context of MSSM with two quasi-degenerate right-handed neutrinos, with baryon asymmetry generated via resonant leptogenesis. Three different models are found with specific textures in the Yukawa coupling matrices, each with a single phase which controls leptogenesis and neutrino CP violation. One model leads to normal hierarchy of light neutrino masses and the prediction tan theta_13 = sin theta_12 \sqrt{m_2/m_3}, resulting in a value of the reactor mixing angle theta_13 very close to the current experimental lower limit. The other two models predict inverted hierarchical neutrino mass spectrum with the sum rules sin^2 theta_12 = 1/2-tan theta_23 sin theta_ 13 cos delta and sin^2 theta_12 = 1/2+cot theta_23 sin theta_13 cos delta respectively. We obtain a lower bound for the phase |delta| in the normal hierarchical model, and a narrow range for |delta| for the inverted hierarchical model from cosmology. In our scenario, the mass-splitting between the quasi-degenerate right-handed neutrinos arise via renormalization group flow, which provides a lower limit on the MSSM parameter tan beta > 12. The right-handed neutrino masses can be as low as TeV, which would avoid the gravitino problem generic to supersymmetric models.
We describe the role of CP violation in the generation of the baryon asymmetry of the Universe, in the framework of baryogenesis through leptogenesis, with emphasis on the possible relationship between CP violation at low energies and that required by leptogenesis. It is emphasized that a direct link between these two manifestations of CP violation only exists in the framework of specific flavour structures for the fundamental leptonic mass matrices.
Cosmological implications of asymmetry between particles and antiparticles are reviewed. Three possible mechanisms of CP-violation in cosmology are described. General features of kinetics of generation of cosmological charge asymmetry are discussed in detail. In particular, the cyclic balance condition, which plays the same role in time non-invariant theory as detailed balance does in T-invariant case, is derived. Several scenarios of baryogenesis are described with an emphasis on CP-violation mechanisms. Production of cosmic antimatter and a possibility of its ``living'' in our neighborhood i…
Lorentz violation naturally leads to neutrino oscillations and provides an alternative mechanism that may explain current data. In this work, we discuss possible signals of Lorentz violation in neutrino-oscillation experiments.
Existing experimental data for neutrino oscillations are consistent with Lorentz-violating massless neutrinos. This talk summarizes some aspects of neutrino oscillations from the perspective of Lorentz and CPT violation in effective quantum field theory.
Solar-neutrino oscillations are considered using a massive model with perturbative Lorentz violation. The adiabatic approximation is used to calculate the effects of Lorentz violation to leading order. The results are more compact than previous work involving vacuum oscillations, and are accurate for small Lorentz-violating coefficients.
The manifestation of CP, T violation in the leptonic sector is studied for flavour neutrino oscillations, both in vacuum and in matter. Different conditions of short-base-line versus long-base-line experiments are discussed.
We examine the constraints on the MNS lepton mixing matrix from the present and future experimental data of the neutrino oscillation and lepton number violation processes. We introduce a graphical representation of the CP violation phases which appear in the lepton number violation processes such as neutrinoless double beta decay, the $μ^--e^+$ conversion, and the K decay, $K^-\toπ^+μ^-μ^-.$ Using this graphical representation, we derive the constraints on the CP violation phases in the lepton sector.
An analysis of 3-flavour neutrino oscillations inside the Earth is presented in terms of the oscillograms -- contour plots of oscillation probabilities in the plane neutrino energy -- nadir angle. Special attention is paid to CP violation in neutrino oscillations in the Earth.
We estimate CP violation for several experimental facilities studying neutrino oscillations. We also estimate the probability of $ν_μ$ to $ν_{e}$ conversion, using values of the parameter $θ_{13}$ within the known limits, in order to suggest new experiments to measure CP violation for neutrinos moving in matter.
After reviewing the general framework to study EPR-like neutrino oscillations, we derive expressions for the oscillation probabilities and a direct measure of CP violation. We compare the possibility of studying CP violation in this case with that of baseline accelerator experiments and conclude that it is possible to study CP violation in experiments with length scales comparable to that of short baseline accelerator experiments.
A possibility to search for T-violation in neutrino oscillation with the use of muon polarization is studied. The sensitivity to T-violation is examined with different muon polarization as a function of muon energy and long-baseline distances.
We analyze the consequences of Lorentz violation (LV) to three-generation neutrino oscillation in the massless neutrino sector. We present a general formalism of three-family neutrino oscillation with neutrino flavor states being mixing states of energy eigenstates. It is also found that the mixing parts could strongly depend on neutrino energy by special choices of Lorentz violation parameters. By confronting with the existing experimental data on neutrino oscillation, the upper bounds on LV parameters are derived. Because the oscillation amplitude could vary with the neutrino energy, neutrin…
Contrary to popular beliefs, it is possible to explain Baryonic asymmetry of the Universe inside the Standard Model, provided inflation ended into a broken phase below the electroweak transition. Two important ingredients of the solution are multiquanta "Higgs bags", containing W,Z and top quarks, as well as sphaleron transitions happening inside these bags. Together, they provide baryon number violation at the level $10^{-2..3}$. Our recent calculations show that CP violation (due to the usual CKM matrix of quark masses in the 4-th order) leads to top-antitop population difference in these ba…
Assuming the seesaw and leptogenesis mechanisms, I give some general remarks on possible connection or disconnection between CP violation in heavy Majorana neutrino decays and that in neutrino oscillations. A simple but predictive ansatz is proposed to simultaneously interpret the observed baryon asymmetry of the universe and oscillations of solar and atmospheric neutrinos.
Neutrino oscillations in the presence of Lorentz violation can present novel observable signals in both long- and short-baseline experiments. In this talk we describe the theory and its different regimes depending on properties of the experiments. CPT violation, its systematic search and possible connections to latest results are also presented.
The oscillation neutrino problem in the extended standard model with minimal number of parameters is considered. The dispersion relations with explicit neutrino-antineutrino asymmetry are discussed and an explanation to the MINIBooNE and solar neutrino controversy is offered. Bounds for the CPT violation symmetry are also found.
We consider future experiments to detect CP violation in neutrino oscillations and discuss how to test that all asymmetries are indeed described in terms of the single leptonic Jarlskog invariant as predicted in the absence of new physics effects.
We discuss possibilities to investigate the effects of CP (and T) violation in the lepton sector in neutrino oscillation experiments. We consider the effects of CP violation in the framework of two schemes of mixing of four massive neutrinos that can accommodate the results of all neutrino oscillation experiments. Using the constraints on the mixing parameters that follow from the results of short-baseline neutrino oscillation experiments, we derive rather strong upper bounds on the effects of CP violation in nu_mu<->nu_e transitions in long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiments. We show t…
Some theoretical aspects of 3-flavour (3f) neutrino oscillations are reviewed. These include: general properties of 3f oscillation probabilities; matter effects in ν_μ\leftrightarrow ν_τoscillations; 3f effects in oscillations of solar, atmospheric, reactor and supernova neutrinos and in accelerator long-baseline experiments; CP and T violation in neutrino oscillations in vacuum and in matter, and the problem of U_{e3}.
In this talk, we investigate extrinsic CPT violation in neutrino oscillations in matter with three flavors. Note that extrinsic CPT violation is different from intrinsic CPT violation. Extrinsic CPT violation is one way of quantifying matter effects, whereas intrinsic CPT violation would mean that the CPT invariance theorem is not valid. We present analytical formulas for the extrinsic CPT probability differences and discuss their implications for long-baseline experiments and neutrino factory setups.
We examine how large violation of CP and T is allowed in long base line neutrino experiments. When we attribute only the atmospheric neutrino anomaly to neutrino oscillation we may have large CP violation effect. When we attribute both the atmospheric neutrino anomaly and the solar neutrino deficit to neutrino oscillation we may have a sizable T violation effect proportional to the ratio of two mass differences; it is difficult to see CP violation since we can't ignore the matter effect. We give a simple expression for T violation in the presence of matter.
The effects of perturbative Lorentz and CPT violation on neutrino oscillations are studied. Features include neutrino-antineutrino oscillations, direction dependence, and unconventional energy behavior. Leading-order corrections arising from renormalizable operators are derived in the general three-flavor effective field theory. The results are applied to neutrino-beam experiments with long baselines, which offer excellent sensitivity to the accompanying effects. Key signatures of Lorentz and CPT violation using neutrino beams include sidereal variations in the oscillation probabilities arisin…
Lorentz invariance is a well known fundamental concept of special relativity but its violation is predicted by some variations of quantum gravity, string theory, and some alternatives to general relativity. We study neutrino oscillation at the presence of the Lorentz invariance violation in vacuum, normal and nuclear media. It is shown that for very high energy neutrinos the neutrino oscillations due to mass difference is suppressed and its contribution to the conversion probability is negligibly small, but the contribution of the Lorentz invariance violation term is not zero. This means that …
Depending on deformed canonical anti-commutation relations, massless neutrino oscillation based on Lorentz invariance violation in non-commutative field theory is discussed. It is found that the previous studies about massless neutrino oscillation within deformed canonical anti-commutation relations should satisfy the condition of new Moyal product and new non standard commutation relations. Furthermore, comparing the Lorentz Invariant Violation parameters $\mathit{A}$ in the previous studies with new Moyal product and new non standard commutation relations, we find that the orders of magnitud…
We investigate matter-induced (or extrinsic) CPT violation effects in neutrino oscillations in matter. Especially, we present approximate analytical formulas for the CPT-violating probability differences for three flavor neutrino oscillations in matter with an arbitrary matter density profile. Note that we assume that the CPT invariance theorem holds, which means that the CPT violation effects arise entirely because of the presence of matter. As special cases of matter density profiles, we consider constant and step-function matter density profiles, which are relevant for neutrino oscillation …
Due to quantum gravity fluctuations at the Planck scale, the space-time manifold is no longer continuous, but discretized. As a result the Lorentz symmetry is broken at very high energies. In this article, we study the neutrino oscillation pattern due to the Lorentz Invariance Violation (LIV), and compare it with the normal neutrino oscillation pattern due to neutrino masses. We find that at very high energies, neutrino oscillation pattern is very different from the normal one. This could provide an possibility to study the Lorentz Invariance Violation by measuring the oscillation pattern of v…
We present an analysis of the global neutrino oscillation data in terms of four-neutrino mass schemes. We find that the strong preference of oscillations into active neutrinos implied by solar+KamLAND as well as atmospheric neutrino data allows to rule out (2+2) mass schemes, whereas (3+1) schemes are strongly disfavoured by short-baseline experiments. In addition, we perform an analysis using recent data from cosmology, including CMB data from WMAP and data from 2dFGRS large scale structure surveys. These data lead to further restrictions of the allowed regions for the (3+1) mass scheme.
The conditions to induce appreciable CP-and T-odd effects in neutrino oscillations are discussed. The propagation in matter leads to fake CP-and CPT-odd asymmetries, besides a Bohm-Aharonov type modification of the interference pattern. We study the separation of fake and genuine CP violation by means of energy and distance dependence.
I examine how large violation of CP and T is allowed in long base line neutrino experiments. When we attribute both the atmospheric neutrino anomaly and the solar neutrino deficit to neutrino oscillation we may have a sizable T violation effect proportional to the ratio of two mass differences; it is difficult to see CP violation since we can't ignore the matter effect. I give a simple expression for T violation in the presence of matter.
In this talk, the status of CPT tests with neutral mesons is reviewed in the context of quantum field theory and the Lorentz- and CPT-violating standard-model extension.
In supersymmetric theories, sneutrino--anti-sneutrino mixing can occur with the oscillation time $\sim 0.01$ ps corresponding the atmospheric neutrino mass scale $\sim 0.05$ eV. We explore the possibility of observing sneutrino oscillation phenomena and CP violation when R-parity violation explains the observed neutrino masses and mixing. It is shown for some parameter region in the bilinear model of R-parity violation that the tiny sneutrino mass splitting and time-dependent CP violating asymmetries could be measured in the future experiments if the tau sneutrino is the lightest supersymmetri…
We numerically study the correlation between CP violation in the neutrino oscillations and baryogenesis in the seesaw model. In this study we get the heavy Majorana neutrino masses and lepton number asymmetries from their decays by fitting the data of neutrino oscillations and by working on some hypothesis of the Dirac-Yukawa term for neutrinos.
In this work there are considered two approaches to the description of $K^o, \bar K^o$ meson transitions into $K_S (K^o_1)$ mesons at $CP$ violation in weak interactions. The first approach uses the standard theory of oscillations and the second approach supposes that ($K_S, K_L$) states which arise at $CP$ violation are normalized but not orthogonal state functions then there arise interferences between these states but not oscillations. It is necessary to remark that the available experimental data are in good agreement with the second approach. So we came to the conclusion that oscillations…
The measurement of the charged-current 8B solar neutrino reaction on deuterium at the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory confirms the neutrino oscillation hypothesis for the solar neutrino problem, and the result favours the solution with large neutrino mixing angles. We demonstrate that the current neutrino oscillation data (including atmospheric and reactor neutrinos) are sufficient to construct the lepton flavour mixing matrix with a reasonable accuracy. We also infer the maximum size of CP violation effects consistent with the current neutrino oscillation experiments.
Taking account of possible CP violation, we discuss about the constraints on the lepton mixing angles from the neutrinoless double beta decay and from the neutrino oscillation for the three flavour Majorana neutrinos. From the CHORUS oscillation experiment, combined with the data of neutrinoless double beta decay, we show that the large angle solution of (θ_{23}) is improbable if the neutrino mass (m_3) of the third generation is a candidate of hot dark matters.
Microscopic CP violation has profound cosmological consequences. In particular, it is related to the baryon asymmetry of the universe. A successful baryogenesis requires new sources of CP violation in addition to the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa phase. I give a brief review of the possibilities.
In this short lecture, we discuss some basic phenomenological aspects of CP and T violation in neutrino oscillation. Using CP/T trajectory diagrams in the bi-probability space, we try to sketch out some essential features of the interplay between the effect of CP/T violating phase and that of the matter in neutrino oscillation.
We discuss the use of the CP asymmetry parameter (Acp) as a possible observable of CP violation in the leptonic sector. In order to do this, we study for a wide range of values of L/E the behavior of this asymmetry for the corresponding maximal value of the CP violation factor allowed by all present experimental limits on neutrino oscillations in vacuum and the recent Super-Kamiokande atmospheric neutrino result. We work in the three neutrino flavor framework.
A general technique is presented for treating CPT violation in neutral-meson oscillations. The effective field theory for a complex scalar with CPT-violating operators of arbitrary mass dimension is incorporated in the formalism for the propagation and mixing of neutral mesons. Observable effects are discussed, and first measurements of CPT-violating operators of dimension five are extracted from existing experimental results.
The combination Charge Conjugation-Parity-Time Reversal(CPT) is a fundamental symmetry in our current understanding of nature. As such, testing CPT violation is a strongly motivated path to explore new physics. In this paper we study CPT violation in the neutrino sector, giving for the first time a bound, for a fundamental particle, in the CPT violating particle-antiparticle gravitational mass difference. We argue that cosmology is nowadays the only data sensitive to CPT violation for the neutrino-antineutrino mass splitting and we use the latest data release from Planck combined with the curr…
Tests of CPT and Lorentz symmetry using neutral-meson oscillations are studied within a formalism that allows for indirect CPT and T violation of arbitrary size and is independent of phase conventions. The analysis is particularly appropriate for studies of CPT and T violation in oscillations of the heavy neutral mesons D, B_d, and B_s. The general Lorentz- and CPT-breaking standard-model extension is used to derive an expression for the parameter for CPT violation. It varies in a prescribed way with the magnitude and orientation of the meson momentum and consequently also with sidereal time. …
We investigate the extent to which leptonic CP-violation in (3+2) sterile neutrino models leads to different oscillation probabilities for $\barν_μ\to\barν_e$ and $ν_μ\toν_e$ oscillations at MiniBooNE. We are using a combined analysis of short-baseline (SBL) oscillation results, including the LSND and null SBL results, to which we impose additional constraints from atmospheric oscillation data. We obtain the favored regions in MiniBooNE oscillation probability space for both (3+2) CP-conserving and (3+2) CP-violating models. We further investigate the allowed CP-violation phase values and the …
We consider possibilities of observing T-violation effects in neutrino oscillation experiments with very long baseline (~ 10000 km) using low energy neutrino (~ several hundreds MeV). We show that the matter effect effectively changes only the first-second generation mixing angle, respecting solar neutrino deficits and atmospheric neutrino anomalies. The effective mixing of the first-second generation in the Earth grows up to maximum by resonance. This effect enables one to search T violation in case the first-second mixing angle is small. We discuss its implications to the observations of T-v…
If massive neutrinos are Majorana particles, then the lepton number should be violated and neutrino-antineutrino oscillations will take place. In this talk, we present the properties of CP violation in neutrino-antineutrino oscillations with a non-unitary leptonic flavor mixing matrix, which naturally arises in the type-I seesaw model due to the mixing between light and heavy Majorana neutrinos. Taking into account current experimental bounds on the leptonic unitarity violation, we show that the CP asymmetries induced by the non-unitary mixing parameters can significantly deviate from those in…
In view of the latest T2K and MINOS observations regarding the mixing angle s_{13}, we have explored the possibility of existence of CP violation in the leptonic sector. Using hints from the construction of the 'db' unitarity triangle in the quark sector, we have made an attempt to construct the 'ν_1.ν_3' leptonic unitarity triangle, suggesting a good possibility of having non zero CP violation.
Analogue models for CP violation in neutral-meson systems are studied in a general framework. No-go results are obtained for models in classical mechanics that are nondissipative or that involve one-dimensional oscillators. A complete emulation is shown to be possible for a two-dimensional oscillator with rheonomic constraints, and an explicit example with spontaneous T and CPT violation is presented. The results have implications for analogue models with electrical circuits.
In this work we tried extensively to apply the EHNS postulation about the quantum mechanics violation effects induced by the quantum gravity of black holes to neutrino oscillations. The possibilities for observing such effects in the neutrino experiments (in progress and/or accessible in the near future) were discussed. Of them, an interesting one was outlined specially.
We study the conditions under which the Majorana phase of the two flavor neutrino mixing matrix appears in the oscillation probabilities and causes $CP$ violation. We find that the Majorana phase remains in the neutrino evolution equation if the neutrino decay eigenstates are not aligned with the mass eigenstates. We show that, in general, two kinds of $CP$ violation are possible: one due to the Majorana phase and the other due to the phase of the off-diagonal element of the neutrino decay matrix. We find that the $CP$ violating terms in the oscillation probabilities are also sensitive to neut…
Flavour oscillations of sub-GeV atmospheric neutrinos and antineutrinos, traversing different distances inside the Earth, are a promising source of information on the leptonic CP phase $δ$. In that energy range, the oscillations are very fast, far beyond the resolution of modern neutrino detectors. However, the necessary averaging over the experimentally typical energy and azimuthal angle bins does not wash out the CP violation effects. In this paper we derive very accurate analytic compact expressions for the averaged oscillations probabilities. Assuming spherically symmetric Earth, the avera…
We examine the effect of a more realistic Earth matter density model which takes into account of the local density variations along the baseline of a possi ble 2100 km very long baseline neutrino oscillation experiment. Its influence to the measurement of CP violation is investigated and a comparison with the commonly used global density models made. Significant differences are found in the comparison of the results of the different density models.
We discuss general predictions for neutrino masses and mixing angles from R parity violation in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model. If the soft supersymmetry breaking terms are flavor blind at short distance, then the leptonic analogue of the CKM matrix depends on only two real parameters, which are completely determined by fits to solar and atmospheric neutrino oscillations. Either the small angle MSW, large angle MSW, or ``just-so'' solutions to the solar neutrino problem are allowed, although the large angle MSW solution requires substantial fine-tuning. The latter two cases require …
We propose a new method for measuring CP violation in neutrino oscillation experiments. The idea is to isolate the term due to the CP-violating phase out of the oscillation probability by taking difference between yields of two (or three) detectors at path-lengths $L = 250 (\frac{E}{1.35 {GeV}}) (\frac{Δm^2}{10^{-2}{eV}^2})^{-1} {km}$ and at $L/3$ (and also at $2L/3$ in the case of three detectors). We use possible hierarchies in neutrino masses suggested by the astrophysical and the cosmological observations to motivate the idea and to examine how the method works.
A model of neutrino oscillations is presented that has only three degrees of freedom and is consistent with existing data. The model is a subset of the renormalizable sector of the Standard-Model Extension (SME), and it offers an alternative to the standard three-neutrino massive model. All classes of neutrino data are described, including solar, reactor, atmospheric, and LSND oscillations. The disappearance of solar neutrinos is obtained without matter-enhanced oscillations. Quantitative predictions are offered for the ongoing MiniBooNE experiment and for the future experiments OscSNS, NOvA, …
