Transverse beam stability is strongly affected by the beam space charge. Usually it is analyzed with the rigid-beam model. However this model is only valid when a bare (not affected by the space charge) tune spread is small compared to the space charge tune shift. This condition specifies a relatively small area of parameters which, however, is the most interesting for practical applications. The Landau damping rate and the beam Schottky spectra are computed assuming that validity condition is satisfied. The results are applied to a round Gaussian beam. The stability thresholds are described by simple fits for the cases of chromatic and octupole tune spreads.
The mode coupling instability for coasting beams has been discussed in a previous paper using macroparticle tracking simulations from the pyHeadTail code and a simple analytical formula which was proposed as an extension of the ansatz used for the single-particle formalism. In this paper, we propose a self-consistent derivation of this formula based on the linearized Vlasov equation. The proposed mode coupling instability for coasting beams was never predicted or discussed in the past and we believe that the reason is twofold. First, to derive it analytically from the linearized Vlasov equatio…
A hydrodynamical description of coherent instabilities that take place in the longitudinal dynamics of a charged-particle coasting beam in a high-energy accelerating machine is presented. This is done in the framework of the Madelung fluid picture provided by the Thermal Wave Model. The well known coherent instability charts in the complex plane of the longitudinal coupling impedance for monochromatic beams are recovered. The results are also interpreted in terms of the deterministic approach to modulational instability analysis usually given for monochromatic large amplitude wave train propag…
A brief historical review is presented of progressing understanding of transverse coherent instabilities of charged particles beams in circular machines when both Coulomb and wake fields are important. The paper relates to a talk given at ICFA Workshop on Mitigation of Coherent Beam Instabilities in Particle Accelerators, 23-27 September 2019 in Zermatt, Switzerland.
Which gain and phase have to be set for a bunch-by-bunch transverse damper, and at which chromaticity it is better to stay? These questions are considered for three models: the two-particle model with possible quadrupole wake, the author's Nested Head-Tail Vlasov solver with a broadband impedance, and the same with the LHC impedance model.
At strong space charge, transverse modes of the bunch core may effectively couple with those of the halo, leading to instabilities well below the core-only transverse mode-coupling threshold.
Transverse instabilities of the antiproton beam have been observed in the Recycler ring soon after its commissioning. After installation of transverse dampers, the threshold for the instability limit increased significantly but the instability is still found to limit the brightness of the antiprotons extracted from the Recycler for Tevatron shots. In this paper, we describe observations of the instabilities during the extraction process as well as during dedicated studies. The measured instability threshold phase density agrees with the prediction of the rigid beam model within a factor of 2. …
The Fermilab Booster - built more than 40 years ago - operates well above the design proton beam intensity of 4x10**12 ppp. Still, the Fermilab neutrino experiments call for even higher intensity of 5.5x10**12 ppp. A multitude of intensity related effects must be overcome in order to meet this goal including suppression of coherent dipole instabilities of transverse oscillations which manifest themselves as a sudden drop in the beam current. In this report we present the results of observation of these instabilities at different tune, coupling and chromaticity settings and discuss possible cur…
Transverse instability of a bunched beam is investigated with synchrotron oscillations, space charge, and resistive wall wakefield taken into account. Boxcar model is used for all-round analysis, and Gaussian distribution is invoked for details. The beam spectrum, instability growth rate and effects of chromaticity are studied in a wide range of parameters, both with head-tail and collective bunch interactions included. Effects of the internal bunch oscillations on the of collective instabilities is investigated thoroughly. Landau damping caused by the space charge tune spread is discussed, an…
When a resistive feedback and single-bunch wake act together, it is known that some head-tail modes may become unstable even without space charge. This feedback-wake instability, FWI, modified by space charge to a certain degree, is shown to have a special single-maximum increasing- dropping pattern with respect to the gain. Also, at sufficiently large Coulomb and wake fields, as well as the feedback gain, a new type of transverse mode-coupling instability is shown to take place, 3FMCI, when head-to-tail amplified positive modes couple and the growth rate saturates with the gain.
A pulsed electron lens produces a betatron tune shift along a hadron bunch as a function of the longitudinal coordinates, which is a longitudinal detuning. An example of transverse detuning are the tune shifts due to octupole magnets. This paper considers a pulsed electron lens as a measure to mitigate the head-tail instabilities. Using a detailed analytical description within a Vlasov formalism, the coherent properties of the longitudinal and transverse detuning are presented. The analytical predictions are compared with the results of the particle tracking simulations. A pulsed electron lens…
Modern and future particle accelerators employ increasingly higher intensity and brighter beams of charged particles and become operationally limited by coherent beam instabilities. Usual methods to control the instabilities, such as octupole magnets, beam feedback dampers and use of chromatic effects, become less effective and insufficient. We show that, in contrast, Lorentz forces of a low-energy, a magnetically stabilized electron beam, or "electron lens", easily introduces transverse nonlinear focusing sufficient for Landau damping of transverse beam instabilities in accelerators. It is al…
The electromagnetic wakefields excited by the bunches of charged particles in the particle accelerators may cause instability in the longitudinal and transverse motion of these bunches leading to the beam loss. These multibunch effects need to be analyzed carefully in an accelerator design to ensure the stability of the charged particle beams. This paper presents an analytical method describing the multibunch transverse instabilities for ultrarelativistic electron bunches whose energy changes linearly through the accelerating section of interest. Fast algorithmic implementations of this analyt…
Coulomb fields of charged particle beams in circular machines determine, together with wake fields, modes of the collective beam oscillations, both for transverse and longitudinal degrees of freedom. Recent progress in these two areas of beam dynamics is discussed.
A coasting hadron beam with an elliptical transverse profile, uniform charge density, and small transverse four-dimensional (4D) emittance could improve accelerator performance in several contexts. A phase space painting method to generate such a distribution is being tested in the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) accumulator ring. A critical component of these efforts is to measure the 4D emittance of the beam during accumulation. The 4D emittance can be reconstructed from measured beam profiles in two ways: in the multi-optics method, the optics between a reconstruction and measurement locati…
Hollow plasma has been introduced into the proton-driven plasma wakefield accelerators to overcome the issue of beam quality degradation caused by the nonlinear transverse wakefields varying in radius and time in uniform plasma. It has been demonstrated in simulations that the electrons can be accelerated to energy frontier with well-preserved beam quality in a long hollow plasma channel. However, this scheme imposes tight requirements on the beam-channel alignment. Otherwise asymmetric transverse wakefields along the axis are induced, which could distort the driving bunch and deteriorate the …
The first mention of the impedance concept appeared on November 1966 in the CERN internal report "Longitudinal instability of a coasting beam above transition, due to the action of lumped discontinuities" by V.G. Vaccaro. This was the beginning of many studies, which took place over the last five decades, and today, impedances and wake fields continue to be an important field of activity, as concerns theory, simulation, bench and beam-based measurements. Building a reliable impedance or wake field model of a machine is the first necessary step to be able to evaluate the machine performance lim…
The upgrade project of Hefei Light Source storage ring is under way. In this paper, the broadband impedances of resistive wall and coated ceramic vacuum chamber were calculated using the analytic formula, the wake fields and impedances of other designed vacuum chambers have been simulated by the CST code, and then the broadband impedances model was obtained. Using the theoretical formula, longitudinal and transverse single bunch instabilities were discussed. With the carefully-designed vacuum chamber, we find that the thresholds of the beam instabilities are higher than the beam current goal.
After a successful scrubbing run in the beginning of 2011, the LHC can be presently operated with high intensity proton beams with 50 ns bunch spacing. However, strong electron cloud effects were observed during machine studies with the nominal beam with 25 ns bunch spacing. In particular, fast transverse instabilities were observed when attempting to inject trains of 48 bunches into the LHC for the first time. An analysis of the turn-by-turn bunch-bybunch data from the transverse damper pick-ups during these injection studies is presented, showing a clear signature of the electron cloud effec…
For a single hadron bunch in a circular accelerator at zero chromaticity, without multi-turn wakes and without electron clouds and other beams, only one transverse collective instability is possible, the mode-coupling instability, or TMCI. For sufficiently strong space charge (SC), the instability threshold of the wake-driven coherent tune shift normally increases linearly with the SC tune shift, as independently concluded by several authors using different methods. This stability condition has, however, a very strange feature: at strong SC, it is totally insensitive to the number of particles…
Coherent transverse oscillations of a bunch in a ring accelerator are considered. Three different models of the bunch are used: a hollow bunch in a square potential well, a square bunch in a parabolic potential well, and a parabolic bunch in a parabolic well. The bunch space-charge field, wakefield, and chromaticity are taken into account in all the cases. The bunch eigenmodes and various instabilities are studied. The results are compared and analyzed to establish the range of applicability of the models. Role of the Landau damping due to dependence of the SC field on the longitudinal coordin…
One of the key sources of transverse impedance in the LHC has been the secondary graphite collimators that sit close to the beam at all energies. This limits the stable bunch intensity due to transverse coupled-bunch instabilities and transverse mode coupling instability. To counteract this, new secondary collimators have been proposed for the phase II upgrade of the LHC collimation system. A number of designs based on different jaw materials and mechanical designs have been proposed. A comparison of the beam coupling impedance of these different designs derived from simulations are presented,…
The presence of microbunching instabilities due to the compression of high-brightness electron beams at existing and future X-ray free-electron lasers (FELs) results in restrictions on the attainable lasing performance and renders beam imaging with optical transition radiation impossible. The instability can be suppressed by introducing additional energy spread, i.e., "heating" the electron beam, as demonstrated by the successful operation of the laser heater system at the Linac Coherent Light Source. The increased energy spread is typically tolerable for self-amplified spontaneous emission FE…
Emittance is a beam quality that is vital for many future applications of advanced accelerators, such as compact free-electron lasers and linear colliders. In this paper, we review the challenges of preserving the transverse emittance during acceleration, both inside and outside accelerator stages. Sources of emittance growth range from space charge and instabilities caused by transverse wakefields, which can occur in any advanced accelerator scheme regardless of medium or driver type, to sources more specific to plasma accelerators, such as mismatching, misalignment, ion motion, Coulomb scatt…
Progress on the Intensity Frontier of high energy physics critically depends on record high intensity charged particles accelerators. Beams in such machines become operationally limited by coherent beam instabilities, particularly enhanced in the regime of strong space charge (SC). Usual methods to control the instabilities, such as octupole magnets, beam feedback dampers and employment of chromatic effects, become less effective and insufficient. In [1] it was proposed to employ electron lenses for introduction of sufficient spread in particle oscillation frequencies needed for beam stabiliza…
The primary purpose of the Fermilab Recycler Ring Transverse Digital Damper System is to prevent instabilities due to high phase space densities of the cooled antiproton beam. The system was designed to facilitate Beam Transfer Function measurements using a signal analyzer connected to auxiliary system ports for timing and diagnostic purposes. The Digital Damper System has the capability for both open and closed loop measurements. The Beam Transfer Function provides direct measurement of the machine impedance, and beam and lattice parameters such as betatron tune and chromaticity. An overview …
An electron or electron-positron beam streaming through a plasma is notoriously prone to micro-instabilities. For a dilute ultrarelativistic infinite beam, the dominant instability is a mixed mode between longitudinal two-stream and transverse filamentation modes, with a phase velocity oblique to the beam velocity. A spatiotemporal theory describing the linear growth of this oblique mixed instability is proposed, which predicts that spatiotemporal effects generally prevail for finite-length beams, leading to a significantly slower instability evolution than in the usually assumed purely tempor…
We develop a universal framework which allows quickly solve a wide class of problems for longitudinal space charge effects in beams and plasmas in cylindrical geometry. We introduce the longitudinal dielectric permittivity for the beam of charged particles, which describes its collective space charge response. The analyis yields an effective plasma frequency, which depends on the transverse geometry of the system. This dielectric permittivity mirrors the dielectric permittivity of plasma and matches the one dimensional (1D) expression once the transverse size of the beam is large. Several part…
Plasma current filamentation of an ultrarelativistic electron beam impinging on an overdense plasma is investigated, with emphasis on radiation-induced electron polarization. Particle-in-cell simulations provide the classification and in-depth analysis of three different regimes of the current filaments, namely, the normal filament, abnormal filament, and quenching regimes. We show that electron radiative polarization emerges during the instability along the azimuthal direction in the momentum space, which significantly varies across the regimes. We put forward an intuitive Hamiltonian model t…
