The secrecy capacity region for the K-receiver degraded broadcast channel (BC) is given for confidential messages sent to the receivers and to be kept secret from an external wiretapper. Superposition coding and Wyner's random code partitioning are used to show the achievable rate tuples. Error probability analysis and equivocation calculation are also provided. In the converse proof, a new definition for the auxiliary random variables is used, which is different from either the case of the 2-receiver BC without common message or the K-receiver BC with common message, both with an external wiretapper; or the K-receiver BC without a wiretapper.
We study the two-user Gaussian multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) broadcast channel with common and confidential messages. In this channel, the transmitter sends a common message to both users, and a confidential message to each user which is kept perfectly secret from the other user. We obtain the entire capacity region of this channel. We also explore the connections between the capacity region we obtained for the Gaussian MIMO broadcast channel with common and confidential messages and the capacity region of its non-confidential counterpart, i.e., the Gaussian MIMO broadcast channel with…
We investigate the effects of an additional relay node on the secrecy of broadcast channels by considering the model of relay broadcast channels with confidential messages. We show that this additional relay node can increase the achievable secrecy rate region of the broadcast channels with confidential messages. More specifically, first, we investigate the discrete memoryless relay broadcast channels with two confidential messages and one common message. Three inner bounds (with respect to decode-forward, generalized noise-forward and compress-forward strategies) and an outer bound on the cap…
We consider a discrete memoryless broadcast channel consists of two users and a sender. The sender has two independent confidential messages for each user. We extend the work of Liu et al.\ on broadcast channels with two confidential messages with weak secrecy criterion to strong secrecy. Our results are based on an extension of the techniques developed by Hou and Kramer on bounding Kullback-Leibler divergence in context of \textit{resolvability} and \textit{effective secrecy}.
In this paper, we study capacity bounds for discrete memoryless broadcast channels with confidential messages. Two private messages as well as a common message are transmitted; the common message is to be decoded by both receivers, while each private message is only for its intended receiver. In addition, each private message is to be kept secret from the unintended receiver where secrecy is measured by equivocation. We propose both inner and outer bounds to the rate equivocation region for broadcast channels with confidential messages. The proposed inner bound generalizes Csiszár and Körner's…
We study the transmission of confidential messages across a wireless broadcast channel with K>2 receivers and K helpers. The goal is to transmit all messages reliably to their intended receivers while keeping them confidential from the unintended receivers. We design a codebook based on nested lattice structure, cooperative jamming, lattice alignment, and i.i.d. coding. Moreover, we exploit the asymmetric compute-and-forward decoding strategy to handle finite SNR regimes. Unlike previous alignment schemes, our achievable rates are attainable at any finite SNR value. Also, we show that our sche…
The two-user multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) Gaussian broadcast channel (BC) with common, private and confidential messages is considered. The transmitter sends a common message to both users, a confidential message to User 1 and a private (non-confidential) message to User 2. The secrecy-capacity region is characterized by showing that certain inner and outer bounds coincide and that the boundary points are achieved by Gaussian inputs, which enables the development of a tight converse. The proof relies on factorization of upper concave envelopes and a variant of dirty-paper coding (DPC)…
This paper considers the problem of the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) Gaussian broadcast channel with two receivers (receivers 1 and 2) and two messages: a common message intended for both receivers and a confidential message intended only for receiver 1 but needing to be kept asymptotically perfectly secure from receiver 2. A matrix characterization of the secrecy capacity region is established via a channel enhancement argument. The enhanced channel is constructed by first splitting receiver 1 into two virtual receivers and then enhancing only the virtual receiver that decodes the co…
This paper establishes inner bounds on the secrecy capacity regions for the general 3-receiver broadcast channel with one common and one confidential message sets. We consider two setups. The first is when the confidential message is to be sent to two receivers and kept secret from the third receiver. Achievability is established using indirect decoding, Wyner wiretap channel coding, and the new idea of generating secrecy from a publicly available superposition codebook. The inner bound is shown to be tight for a class of reversely degraded broadcast channels and when both legitimate receivers…
We show that the capacity region of the broadcast channel with confidential messages does not change when the strong security criterion is adopted instead of the weak security criterion traditionally used. We also show a construction method of coding for the broadcast channel with confidential messages by using an arbitrary given coding for the broadcast channel with degraded message sets.
We derive universal codes for transmission of broadcast and confidential messages over classical-quantum-quantum and fully quantum channels. These codes are robust to channel uncertainties considered in the compound model. To construct these codes we generalize random codes for transmission of public messages, to derive a universal superposition coding for the compound quantum broadcast channel. As an application, we give a multi-letter characterization of regions corresponding to the capacity of the compound quantum broadcast channel for transmitting broadcast and confidential messages simult…
The wiretap channel model of Wyner is one of the first communication models with both reliability and security constraints. Capacity-achieving schemes for various models of the wiretap channel have received considerable attention in recent literature. In this paper, we show that capacity of the general (not necessarily degraded or symmetric) wiretap channel under a "strong secrecy constraint" can be achieved using a transmission scheme based on polar codes. We also extend our construction to the case of broadcast channels with confidential messages defined by Csisz{á}r and K{örner}, achieving …
The compound broadcast channel with confidential messages (BCC) generalizes the BCC by modeling the uncertainty of the channel. For the compound BCC, it is only known that the actual channel realization belongs to a pre-specified uncertainty set of channels and that it is constant during the whole transmission. For reliable and secure communication is necessary to operate at a rate pair within the compound BCC capacity region. Therefore, the question whether small variations of the uncertainty set lead to large losses of the compound BCC capacity region is studied. It is shown that the compoun…
In coding schemes for the wire-tap channel or the broadcast channels with confidential messages, it is well known that the sender needs to use a stochastic encoding to avoid the information about the transmitted confidential message to be leaked to an eavesdropper. In this paper, it is investigated that the trade-off between the rate of the random number to realize the stochastic encoding and the rates of the common, private, and confidential messages. For the direct theorem, the superposition coding scheme for the wire-tap channel recently proposed by Chia and El Gamal is employed, and its st…
In wireless data networks, communication is particularly susceptible to eavesdropping due to its broadcast nature. Security and privacy systems have become critical for wireless providers and enterprise networks. This paper considers the problem of secret communication over the Gaussian broadcast channel, where a multi-antenna transmitter sends independent confidential messages to two users with information-theoretic secrecy. That is, each user would like to obtain its own confidential message in a reliable and safe manner. This communication model is referred to as the multi-antenna Gaussian …

We obtain the entire capacity region of this channel. We also explore the connections between the capacity region we obtain for the Gaussian MIMO broadcast channel with common and confidential messages and the capacity region of its non-confidential counterpart, i.e., the Gaussian MIMO broadcast chann…
In this paper, we analyze the performance of regularized channel inversion (RCI) precoding in multiple-input single-output (MISO) broadcast channels with confidential messages under transmit-side channel correlation. We derive a deterministic equivalent for the achievable per-user secrecy rate which is almost surely exact as the number of transmit antennas and the number of users grow to infinity in a fixed ratio, and we determine the optimal regularization parameter that maximizes the secrecy rate. Furthermore, we obtain deterministic equivalents for the secrecy rates achievable by: (i) zero …
In this paper, first, we investigate the model of degraded broadcast channel with side information and confidential messages. This work is from Steinberg's work on the degraded broadcast channel with causal and noncausal side information, and Csisz$\acute{a}$r-Körner's work on broadcast channel with confidential messages. Inner and outer bounds on the capacity-equivocation regions are provided for the noncausal and causal cases. Superposition coding and double-binning technique are used in the corresponding achievability proofs. Then, we investigate the degraded broadcast channel with side inf…
In this paper we consider the secure transmission over the fast fading multiple antenna Gaussian broadcast channels with confidential messages (FMGBC-CM), where a multiple-antenna transmitter sends independent confidential messages to two users with information theoretic secrecy and only the statistics of the receivers' channel state information are known at the transmitter. We first use the same marginal property of the FMGBC-CM to classify the non-trivial cases, i.e., those not degraded to the common wiretap channels. We then derive the achievable rate region for the FMGBC-CM by solving the …
We develop a low-complexity polar coding scheme for the discrete memoryless broadcast channel with confidential messages under strong secrecy and randomness constraints. Our scheme extends previous work by using an optimal rate of uniform randomness in the stochastic encoder, and avoiding assumptions regarding the symmetry or degraded nature of the channels. The price paid for these extensions is that the encoder and decoders are required to share a secret seed of negligible size and to increase the block length through chaining. We also highlight a close conceptual connection between the prop…
We show universally attainable exponents for the decoding error and the mutual information and universally attainable equivocation rates for the conditional entropy for the broadcast channels with confidential messages. The error exponents are the same as ones given by Korner and Sgarro for the broadcast channels with degraded message sets.
We study information-theoretic security for discrete memoryless interference and broadcast channels with independent confidential messages sent to two receivers. Confidential messages are transmitted to their respective receivers with information-theoretic secrecy. That is, each receiver is kept in total ignorance with respect to the message intended for the other receiver. The secrecy level is measured by the equivocation rate at the eavesdropping receiver. In this paper, we present inner and outer bounds on secrecy capacity regions for these two communication systems. The derived outer bound…
We study the compound multi-input multi-output (MIMO) broadcast channel with confidential messages (BCC), where one transmitter sends a common message to two receivers and two confidential messages respectively to each receiver. The channel state may take one of a finite set of states, and the transmitter knows the state set but does not know the realization of the state. We study achievable rates with perfect secrecy in the high SNR regime by characterizing an achievable secrecy degree of freedom (s.d.o.f.) region for two models, the Gaussian MIMO-BCC and the ergodic fading multi-input single…
In this paper, bounds to the rate-equivocation region for the general 3-receiver broadcast channel (BC) with degraded message sets, are presented for confidential messages to be kept secret from one of the receivers. This model is more general than the 2-receiver BCs with confidential messages with an external wiretapper, and the recently studied 3-receiver degraded BCs with confidential messages, since in the model studied in this paper, the conditions on the receivers are general and the wiretapper receives the common message. Wyner's code partitioning combined with double-binning is used to…
This paper considers the problem of secret communication over a two-receiver multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) Gaussian broadcast channel. The transmitter has two independent, confidential messages and a common message. Each of the confidential messages is intended for one of the receivers but needs to be kept perfectly secret from the other, and the common message is intended for both receivers. It is shown that a natural scheme that combines secret dirty-paper coding with Gaussian superposition coding achieves the secrecy capacity region. To prove this result, a channel-enhancement appro…
In this paper, we consider the broadcast channel with confidential messages and external eavesdroppers (BCCE), where a multi-antenna base station simultaneously communicates to multiple potentially malicious users, in the presence of randomly located external eavesdroppers. Using the proposed model, we study the secrecy rates achievable by regularized channel inversion (RCI) precoding by performing a large-system analysis that combines tools from stochastic geometry and random matrix theory. We obtain explicit expressions for the probability of secrecy outage and an upper bound on the rate los…
This paper presents two new results on multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) Gaussian broadcast channels with confidential messages. First, the problem of the MIMO Gaussian wiretap channel is revisited. A matrix characterization of the capacity-equivocation region is provided, which extends the previous result on the secrecy capacity of the MIMO Gaussian wiretap channel to the general, possibly imperfect secrecy setting. Next, the problem of MIMO Gaussian broadcast channels with two receivers and three independent messages: a common message intended for both receivers, and two confidential mes…

Security and privacy systems have become critical for wireless providers and enterprise networks. This paper considers the problem of secret communication over a Gaussian broadcast channel, where a multi-antenna transmitter sends independent confidential messages to two users with \emph{information-theoretic secrecy}. That is, each user would like to obtain its own confidential message in a reliable and safe manner. This communication model is referred to as the multi-antenna Gaus…
This paper investigates the capacity regions of two-receiver broadcast channels where each receiver (i) has both common and private-message requests, and (ii) knows part of the private message requested by the other receiver as side information. We first propose a transmission scheme and derive an inner bound for the two-receiver memoryless broadcast channel. We next prove that this inner bound is tight for the deterministic channel and the more capable channel, thereby establishing their capacity regions. We show that this inner bound is also tight for all classes of two-receiver broadcast ch…
Motivated by a simple broadcast channel, we generalize the notions of a less noisy receiver and a more capable receiver to an essentially less noisy receiver and an essentially more capable receiver respectively. We establish the capacity regions of these classes by borrowing on existing techniques to obtain the characterization of the capacity region for certain new and interesting classes of broadcast channels. We also establish the relationships between the new classes and the existing classes.
The fading broadcast channel with confidential messages (BCC) is investigated, where a source node has common information for two receivers (receivers 1 and 2), and has confidential information intended only for receiver 1. The confidential information needs to be kept as secret as possible from receiver 2. The channel state information (CSI) is assumed to be known at both the transmitter and the receivers. The secrecy capacity region is first established for the parallel Gaussian BCC, and the optimal source power allocations that achieve the boundary of the secrecy capacity region are derived…
An outer bound to the two-receiver discrete memoryless broadcast channel is presented. We compare it to the known outer bounds and show that the outer bound presented is at least as tight as the existing bounds.
In wireless data networks, communication is particularly susceptible to eavesdropping due to its broadcast nature. Security and privacy systems have become critical for wireless providers and enterprise networks. This paper considers the problem of secret communication over the Gaussian broadcast channel, where a multi-antenna transmitter sends independent confidential messages to two users with perfect secrecy. That is, each user would like to obtain its own message reliably and confidentially. First, a computable Sato-type outer bound on the secrecy capacity region is provided for a multi-an…
The capacity region of a broadcast channel consisting of k-receivers that lie in a less noisy sequence is an open problem, when k >= 3. We solve this problem for the case k=3. We prove that superposition coding is optimal for a class of broadcast channels with a sequence of less noisy receivers. T
In this paper, we consider a scenario where a source node wishes to broadcast two confidential messages for two respective receivers, while a wire-tapper also receives the transmitted signal. This model is motivated by wireless communications, where individual secure messages are broadcast over open media and can be received by any illegitimate receiver. The secrecy level is measured by equivocation rate at the eavesdropper. We first study the general (non-degraded) broadcast channel with confidential messages. We present an inner bound on the secrecy capacity region for this model. The inner …
This paper considers the problem of secret communication over a two-receiver multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) Gaussian broadcast channel. The transmitter has two independent messages, each of which is intended for one of the receivers but needs to be kept asymptotically perfectly secret from the other. It is shown that, surprisingly, under a matrix power constraint both messages can be simultaneously transmitted at their respective maximal secrecy rates. To prove this result, the MIMO Gaussian wiretap channel is revisited and a new characterization of its secrecy capacity is provided via …
This paper studies the problem of secure communcation over the two-receiver discrete memoryless broadcast channel with one-sided receiver side information and with a passive eavesdropper. We proposed a coding scheme which is based upon the superposition-Marton framework. Secrecy techniques such as the one-time pad, Carleial-Hellman secrecy coding and Wyner serecy coding are applied to ensure individual secrecy. This scheme is shown to be capacity achieving for some cases of the degraded broadcast channel. We also notice that one-sided receiver side information provides the advantage of rate re…
A polar coding scheme is proposed for the Wiretap Broadcast Channel with two legitimate receivers and one eavesdropper. We consider a model in which the transmitter wishes to send a private and a confidential message that must be reliably decoded by the receivers, and the confidential message must also be (strongly) secured from the eavesdropper. The coding scheme aims to use the optimal rate of randomness and does not make any assumption regarding the symmetry or degradedness of the channel. This paper extends previous work on polar codes for the wiretap channel by proposing a new chaining co…
In this paper, we study the performance of regularized channel inversion (RCI) precoding in large MISO broadcast channels with confidential messages (BCC). We obtain a deterministic approximation for the achievable secrecy sum-rate which is almost surely exact as the number of transmit antennas $M$ and the number of users $K$ grow to infinity in a fixed ratio $β=K/M$. We derive the optimal regularization parameter $ξ$ and the optimal network load $β$ that maximize the per-antenna secrecy sum-rate. We then propose a linear precoder based on RCI and power reduction (RCI-PR) that significantly in…
We study noisy broadcast networks with local cache memories at the receivers, where the transmitter can pre-store information even before learning the receivers' requests. We mostly focus on packet-erasure broadcast networks with two disjoint sets of receivers: a set of weak receivers with all-equal erasure probabilities and equal cache sizes and a set of strong receivers with all-equal erasure probabilities and no cache memories. We present lower and upper bounds on the capacity-memory tradeoff of this network. The lower bound is achieved by a new joint cache-channel coding idea and significa…
Korner and Marton established the capacity region for the 2-receiver broadcast channel with degraded message sets. Recent results and conjectures suggest that a straightforward extension of the Korner-Marton region to more than 2 receivers is optimal. This paper shows that this is not the case. We establish the capacity region for a class of 3-receiver broadcast channels with 2 degraded message sets and show that it can be strictly larger than the straightforward extension of the Korner-Marton region. The key new idea is indirect decoding, whereby a receiver who cannot directly decode a cloud …
In this paper, we derive information-theoretic performance limits for secure and reliable communications over the general two-user discrete memoryless broadcast channel with side-information at the transmitter. The sender wishes to broadcast two independent messages to two receivers, under the constraint that each message should be kept confidential from the unintended receiver. Furthermore, the encoder has side-information - for example, fading in the wireless medium, interference caused by neighboring nodes in the network, etc. - provided to it in a noncausal manner, i.e., before the process…
In this paper, the fading broadcast channel with confidential messages is studied in the presence of statistical quality of service (QoS) constraints in the form of limitations on the buffer length. We employ the effective capacity formulation to measure the throughput of the confidential and common messages. We assume that the channel side information (CSI) is available at both the transmitter and the receivers. Assuming average power constraints at the transmitter side, we first define the effective secure throughput region, and prove that the throughput region is convex. Then, we obtain the…
We establish the deterministic-code capacity region of a network with one transmitter and two receivers: an "ordinary receiver" and a "robust receiver." The channel to the ordinary receiver is a given (known) discrete memoryless channel (DMC), whereas the channel to the robust receiver is an arbitrarily varying channel (AVC). Both receivers are required to decode the "common message," whereas only the ordinary receiver is required to decode the "private message."
We develop a new method for showing the optimality of the Gaussian distribution in multiterminal information theory problems. As an application of this method we show that Marton's inner bound achieves the capacity of the vector Gaussian broadcast channels with common message.
Three-receiver broadcast channel (BC) is of interest due to its information theoretical differences with two receiver one. In this paper, we derive achievable rate regions for two classes of 3-receiver BC with side information available at the transmitter, Multilevel BC and 3-receiver less noisy BC, by using superposition coding, Gel'fand-Pinsker binning scheme and Nair-El Gamal indirect decoding. Our rate region for multilevel BC subsumes the Steinberg rate region for 2-receiver degraded BC with side information as its special case. We also find the capacity region of 3-receiver less noisy BC…
The problem of characterizing the capacity region for Gaussian broadcast channels with receiver message side information appears difficult and remains open for N >= 3 receivers. This paper proposes a joint network and Gelfand-Pinsker coding method for 3-receiver cases. Using the method, we establish a unified inner bound on the capacity region of 3-receiver Gaussian broadcast channels under general message side information configuration. The achievability proof of the inner bound uses an idea of joint interference cancelation, where interference is canceled by using both dirty-paper coding at …

We consider achieving the rates in the capacity region of a multi-level 3-receiver broadcast channel, in which the second receiver is degraded with respect to the first receiver, with degraded message sets. We propose a two-level chaining strategy based on polar codes that achieves the capacity region of the considered setting without time-sharing. We also look at a slight variation of this problem, where the first receiver only requires to decode its own private message and the other two receivers require to decode another private message common to them. We observe that the capacity region do…
This paper investigates the capacity region of three-receiver AWGN broadcast channels where the receivers (i) have private-message requests and (ii) know the messages requested by some other receivers as side information. We classify these channels based on their side information into eight groups, and construct different transmission schemes for the groups. For six groups, we characterize the capacity region, and show that it improves both the best known inner and outer bounds. For the remaining two groups, we improve the best known inner bound by using side information during channel decodin…
Secret-sharing building blocks based on quantum broadcast communication are studied. The confidential capacity region of the pure-loss bosonic broadcast channel is determined, both with and without key assistance, and an achievable region is established for the lossy bosonic broadcast channel. If the main receiver has a transmissivity of η<1/2, then confidentiality solely relies on the key-assisted encryption of the one-time pad. We also address conference key agreement for the distillation of two keys, a public key and a secret key. A regularized formula is derived for the key-agreement capac…
The fact that the results for 2-receiver broadcast channels (BCs) are not generalized to the 3-receiver ones is of information theoretical importance. In this paper we study two classes of discrete memoryless BCs with non-causal side information (SI), i.e. multilevel BC (MBC) and 3-receiver less noisy BC. First, we obtain an achievable rate region and a capacity outer bound for the MBC. Second, we prove a special capacity region for the 3-receiver less noisy BC. Third, the obtained special capacity region for the 3-receiver less noisy BC is extended to continuous alphabet fading Gaussian versi…
This letter investigates the role of index coding in the capacity of AWGN broadcast channels with receiver message side information. We first show that index coding is unnecessary where there are two receivers; multiplexing coding and superposition coding are sufficient to achieve the capacity region. We next show that, for more than two receivers, multiplexing coding and superposition coding alone can be suboptimal. We give an example where these two coding schemes alone cannot achieve the capacity region, but adding index coding can. This demonstrates that, in contrast to the two-receiver ca…
In wiretap channels the eavesdropper's channel state information (CSI) is commonly assumed to be known at transmitter, fully or partially. However, under perfect secrecy constraint the eavesdropper may not be motivated to feedback any correct CSI. In this paper we consider a more feasible problem for the transmitter to have eavesdropper's CSI. That is, the fast fading multiple-antenna Gaussian broadcast channels (FMGBC-CM) with confidential messages, where both receivers are legitimate users such that they both are willing to feedback accurate CSI to maintain their secure transmission, and not…
Three-Receiver broadcast channels (BC) are of interest due to their information-theoretic differences with two-receiver one. In this paper, we derive achievable rate regions for two classes of 3-receiver BC with side information (SI), i.e. Multilevel BC (MBC) and 3-receiver less noisy BC, using a combination of superposition coding, Gelfand-Pinsker binning scheme and Nair-El Gamal indirect decoding. Our rate region for MBC subsumes Steinberg rate region for 2-receiver degraded BC with SI as its special case. We will also show that the obtained achievable rate regions in the first two cases are…
We design and assess some practical low-density parity-check (LDPC) coded transmission schemes for the Gaussian broadcast channel with confidential messages (BCC). This channel model is different from the classical wiretap channel model as the unauthorized receiver (Eve) must be able to decode some part of the information. Hence, the reliability and security targets are different from those of the wiretap channel. In order to design and assess practical coding schemes, we use the error rate as a metric of the performance achieved by the authorized receiver (Bob) and the unauthorized receiver (…
This paper studies pliable index coding, in which a sender broadcasts information to multiple receivers through a shared broadcast medium, and the receivers each have some message a priori and want any message they do not have. An approach, based on receivers that are absent from the problem, was previously proposed to find lower bounds on the optimal broadcast rate. In this paper, we introduce new techniques to obtained better lower bounds, and derive the optimal broadcast rates for new classes of the problems, including all problems with up to four absent receivers.
In general, the different links of a broadcast channel may experience different fading dynamics and, potentially, unequal or hybrid channel state information (CSI) conditions. The faster the fading and the shorter the fading block length, the more often the link needs to be trained and estimated at the receiver, and the more likely that CSI is stale or unavailable at the transmitter. Disparity of link fading dynamics in the presence of CSI limitations can be modeled by a multi-user broadcast channel with both non-identical link fading block lengths as well as dissimilar link CSIR/CSIT conditio…
The broadcast channel with confidential messages is a well studied scenario from the theoretical standpoint, but there is still lack of practical schemes able to achieve some fixed level of reliability and security over such a channel. In this paper, we consider a quasi-static fading channel in which both public and private messages must be sent from the transmitter to the receivers, and we aim at designing suitable coding and modulation schemes to achieve such a target. For this purpose, we adopt the error rate as a metric, by considering that reliability (security) is achieved when a suffici…
The cognitive interference channel with confidential messages is studied. Similarly to the classical two-user interference channel, the cognitive interference channel consists of two transmitters whose signals interfere at the two receivers. It is assumed that there is a common message source (message 1) known to both transmitters, and an additional independent message source (message 2) known only to the cognitive transmitter (transmitter 2). The cognitive receiver (receiver 2) needs to decode both messages, while the non-cognitive receiver (receiver 1) should decode only the common message. …
