The geometric phase has been proposed as a candidate for noise resilient coherent manipulation of fragile quantum systems. Since it is determined only by the path of the quantum state, the presence of noise fluctuations affects the geometric phase in a different way than the dynamical phase. We have experimentally tested the robustness of Berry's geometric phase for spin-1/2 particles in a cyclically varying magnetic field. Using trapped polarized ultra-cold neutrons it is demonstrated that the geometric phase contributions to dephasing due to adiabatic field fluctuations vanish for long evolution times.
We demonstrate how to directly study non-Abelian statistics for a wide class of exactly solvable many-body quantum systems. By employing exact eigenstates to simulate the adiabatic transport of a model's quasiparticles, the resulting Berry phase provides a direct demonstration of their non-Abelian statistics. We apply this technique to Kitaev's honeycomb lattice model and explicitly demonstrate the existence of non-Abelian Ising anyons confirming the previous conjectures. Finally, we present the manipulations needed to transport and detect the statistics of these quasiparticles in the laborato…
The experimental observation of effects due to Berry's phase in quantum systems is certainly one of the most impressive demonstrations of the correctness of the superposition principle in quantum mechanics. Since Berry's original paper in 1984, the spin 1/2 coupled with rotating external magnetic field has been one of the most studied models where those phases appear. We also consider a special case of this soluble model. A detailed analysis of the coupled differential equations and comparison with exact results teach us why the usual procedure (of neglecting nondiagonal terms) is mathematical…
The phase relation between quantum states represents an essential resource for the storage and processing of quantum information. While quantum phases are commonly controlled dynamically by tuning energetic interactions, utilizing geometric phases that accumulate during cyclic evolution may offer superior robustness to noise. To date, demonstrations of geometric phase control in solid-state systems rely on microwave fields that have limited spatial resolution. Here, we demonstrate an all-optical method based on stimulated Raman adiabatic passage to accumulate a geometric phase, the Berry phase…
The two-way quantum time transfer method has been proposed and experimentally demonstrated for its potential enhancements in precision and better guarantee of security. To further testify its advantage in practical applications, the applicable direct transmission distance as well as the achievable synchronization precision between independent time scales is of great interest. In this paper, an experiment on two-way quantum time transfer has been carried out over a 50 km long fiber link. With the common clock reference, a short-term stability of 2.6 ps at an averaging time of 7 s and a long-ter…
Quantum computation has made considerable progress in the last decade with multiple emerging technologies providing proof-of-principle experimental demonstrations of such calculations. However, these experimental demonstrations of quantum computation face technical challenges due to the noise and errors that arise from imperfect implementation of the technology. Here, we frame the concepts of computational accuracy, result reproducibility, device reliability and program stability in the context of quantum computation. We provide intuitive definitions for these concepts in the context of quantu…
A technique is demonstrated that allows free space atomic fountain clocks and interferometers to utilize optical cavity generated spin-squeezed states with over $390\,000$ ${}^{87}\text{Rb}$ atoms. Fluorescence imaging is used for population spectroscopy, after a free fall time of 4 milliseconds, to resolve a single-shot phase sensitivity of $814 (61)$ microradians, which is $5.8(0.6)$ decibels (dB) below the quantum projection limit. The dynamic range is observed to be 100 milliradians. When operating as a microwave atomic clock with $240\,000$ atoms at a 3.6 ms Ramsey time, a single-shot fra…
The twin-field (TF) quantum key distribution (QKD) protocol and its variants are highly attractive because they can beat the well-known rate-loss limit (i.e., the PLOB bound) for QKD protocols without quantum repeaters. In this paper, we perform a proof-of-principle experimental demonstration of TF-QKD based on the protocol proposed by Curty et al. which removes from the original TF-QKD scheme the need for post-selection on the matching of a global phase, and can deliver nearly an order of magnitude higher secret key rate. Furthermore, we overcome the major difficulty in the practical implemen…
Based on the second-order quantum interference between frequency entangled photons that are generated by parametric down conversion, a quantum strategic algorithm for synchronizing two spatially separated clocks has been recently presented. In the reference frame of a Hong-Ou-Mandel (HOM) interferometer, photon correlations are used to define simultaneous events. Once the HOM interferometer is balanced by use of an adjustable optical delay in one arm, arrival times of simultaneously generated photons are recorded by each clock. The clock offset is determined by correlation measurement of the r…
Quantum key distribution (QKD) enables two distant users, Alice and Bob, to share secret keys. In existing QKD protocols, an eavesdropper's intervention will inevitably disturb the quantum signals; thus, Alice and Bob must monitor the signal disturbance to place a bound on the potential information leakage. However, T. Sasaki et al. proposed a quite different protocol, named round-robin differential phase shift (RRDPS), in which the amount of eavesdropped information is bounded without monitoring the signal disturbance. Here, we present the first active implementation of the RRDPS protocol. In…
Known methods for transverse confinement and guidance of light can be grouped into a few basic mechanisms, the most common being metallic reflection, total internal reflection and photonic-bandgap (or Bragg) reflection. All of them essentially rely on changes of the refractive index, that is on scalar properties of light. Recently, processes based on "geometric Berry phases", such as manipulation of polarization states or deflection of spinning-light rays, have attracted considerable interest in the contexts of singular optics and structured light. Here, we disclose a new approach to light wav…
We have studied the $Z_2$ topological number defined by the Berry phase for the gapped frustrated systems including the orthogonal dimer model which has a direct product state of local quantum clusters as the exact ground state. The $Z_2$ topological number can clarify what kind of the local quantum clusters is formed to lift the macroscopic degeneracy due to frustration, even when the exact ground state is unknown. As a demonstration, the dimer-singlet and plaquette-singlet phase are identified by two kinds of Z$_2$ topological numbers in the Shastry-Sutherland model and its generalization re…
We experimentally demonstrated that the stability of an atomic clock improves at fastest rate $τ^{-1}$ (where $τ$ is the averaging time) when the phase of a local oscillator is genuinely compared to the continuous phase of many atoms in a single trap (atomic phase lock). For this demonstration, we developed a simple method that repeatedly monitors the atomic phase while retaining its coherence by observing only a portion of the whole ion cloud. Using this new method, we measured the continuous phase over 3 measurement cycles, and thereby improved the stability scaling from $τ^{-1/2}$ to $τ^{-1…
A wide area quantum key distribution (QKD) network deployed on communication infrastructures provided by China Mobile Ltd. is demonstrated. Three cities and two metropolitan area QKD networks were linked up to form the Hefei-Chaohu-Wuhu wide area QKD network with over 150 kilometers coverage area, in which Hefei metropolitan area QKD network was a typical full-mesh core network to offer all-to-all interconnections, and Wuhu metropolitan area QKD network was a representative quantum access network with point-to-multipoint configuration. The whole wide area QKD network ran for more than 5000 hou…
