We calculate sensitivity coefficients to $α$-variation for the fine-structure transitions (1,0) and (2,1) within $^3P_J[2s^2 2p^2]$ multiplet of the Carbon-like ions C I, N II, O III, Na VI, Mg VII, and Si IX. These transitions lie in the far infrared region and are in principle observable in astrophysics for high redshifts z~10. This makes them very promising candidates for the search for possible $α$-variation on a cosmological timescale. In such studies one of the most dangerous sources of systematic errors is associated with isotope shifts. We calculate isotope shifts with the help of relativistic mass shift operator and show that it may be significant for C I, but rapidly decreases along the isoelectronic sequence and becomes very small for Mg VII and Si IX.
Energy levels, hyperfine interaction constants, and Landé $g_J$-factors are reported for n=2 states in beryllium-, boron-, carbon-, and nitrogen-like ions from relativistic configuration interaction calculations. Valence, core-valence, and core-core correlation effects are taken into account through single and double-excitations from multireference expansions to increasing sets of active orbitals. A systematic comparison of the calculated hyperfine interaction constants is made with values from the available literature.
Energy levels, normal and specific mass shift parameters as well as electronic densities at the nucleus are reported for numerous states along the beryllium, boron, carbon, and nitrogen isoelectronic sequences. Combined with nuclear data, these electronic parameters can be used to determine values of level and transition isotope shifts. The calculation of the electronic parameters is done using first-order perturbation theory with relativistic configuration interaction wave functions that account for valence, core-valence and core-core correlation effects as zero-order functions. Results are c…
In the present work, the calculations have been performed for dispersion interaction between heavy elements (Zn$^+$, Cd$^+$, Hg$^+$, Pb$^+$, Zn, Cd, Hg, and Pb) with graphene and carbon nanotubes by evaluating van der Waals $C_3$ coefficients using well-known Lifshitz theory. The dispersion coefficients are expressed in terms of reflection coefficients of graphene and carbon nanotubes which are calculated within the framework of Dirac model. In addition, accurate values of dynamic dipole polarizabilities at imaginary frequencies of considered ions and atoms which are vital, have been calculate…
Recent advance in calculations of energy levels of the 1s2$l$2$l^{\prime}$ core-excited states for ions along the Li isoelectronic sequence from carbon to uranium suggested that theoretical predictions for the 1s2$l$2$l^{\prime}$ transitions are significantly more precise than most of the experimental results available today and can thus be used for calibrating measured X-ray spectra. This suggestion is verified in the present work by comparison with benchmark experimental results. We present a critical compilation of all available experimental data on the energy levels of the 1s2$l$2$l^{\prim…
By means of a time-of-flight technique, we measured the longitudinal profile of prompt $γ$-rays emitted by 73 MeV/u $^{13}$C ions irradiating a PMMA target. This technique allowed us to minimize the shielding against neutrons and scattered $γ$-rays, and to correlate prompt gamma emission to the ion path. This correlation, together with a high counting rate, paves the way toward real-time monitoring of the longitudinal dose profile during ion therapy treatments. Moreover, the time correlation between the prompt gamma detection and the transverse position of the incident ions measured by a beam …
Carbon stopping-power (SP) data for heavy ions (HIs), obtained around Bohr velocities, revealed remarkably lower values than those predicted by the SRIM/TRIM calculations/simulations. An attempt was made to extract the elastic (collisional) and inelastic (electronic) components from available SP data. A problem is that essentially total SP is measured in experiments, whereas electronic SP values, presented as the results, are obtained by the subtraction of the calculated collisional component values from the measured ones. At high HI reduced velocities (V/v0)/Z_HI^2/3 > 0.3 (V and v0 are HI an…
We present systematic calculations of energy levels of the $1s^22l$ and $1s2l2l'$ states of ions along the lithium isoelectronic sequence from carbon till chlorine. The calculations are performed by using the relativistic-configuration-interaction method adapted to the treatment of autoionizing core-excited states. The relativistic energies are supplemented with the QED energy shifts calculated within the model QED operator approach. A systematic estimation of the theoretical uncertainties is performed for every electronic state and every nuclear charge. The results are in agreement with exist…
Absolute cross sections for the K-shell photoionization of ground-state Li-like carbon [C$^{3+}$(1s$^2$2s $^2$S)] ions were measured by employing the ion-photon merged-beams technique at the Advanced Light Source. The energy ranges 299.8--300.15 eV, 303.29--303.58 eV and 335.61--337.57 eV of the [1s(2s2p)$^3$P]$^2$P, [1s(2s2p)$^1$P]$^2$P and [(1s2s)$^3$S 3p]$^2$P resonances, respectively, were investigated using resolving powers of up to 6000. The autoionization linewidth of the [1s(2s2p)$^1$P]$^2$P resonance was measured to be $27 \pm 5$ meV and compares favourably with a theoretical result o…
We study electronic transitions in highly-charged Cf ions that are within the frequency range of optical lasers and have very high sensitivity to potential variations in the fine-structure constant, alpha. The transitions are in the optical despite the large ionisation energies because they lie on the level-crossing of the 5f and 6p valence orbitals in the thallium isoelectronic sequence. Cf16+ is a particularly rich ion, having several narrow lines with properties that minimize certain systematic effects. Cf16+ has very large nuclear charge and large ionisation energy, resulting in the larges…
We study atomic systems that are in the frequency range of optical atomic clocks and have enhanced sensitivity to potential time-variation of the fine structure constant, alpha. The high sensitivity is due to coherent contributions from three factors: high nuclear charge Z, high ionization degree, and significant differences in the configuration composition of the states involved. Configuration crossing keeps the frequencies in the optical range despite the large ionization energies. We discuss a few promising examples that have the largest alpha-sensitivities seen in atomic systems.
We study transitions between ground and low-energy excited states of heavy ions corresponding to s-d single-electron transitions or s^2-d^2 double-electron transitions. The large nuclear charge Z and significant change in angular momentum of electron orbitals make these transitions highly sensitive to a potential variation in the fine-structure constant, alpha. The transitions may be considered as candidates for laboratory searches for space-time variation of alpha.
Energy levels of the $1sns$ and $1snp$ states of ions along the helium isoelectronic sequence from carbon to uranium are calculated, with $n=3$-$7$. The computation is performed within the relativistic configuration-interaction method, including the relativistic nuclear recoil effect, the leading QED effects, and the frequency dependence of the Breit interaction. All theoretical energies are supplied with uncertainty estimates.
To predict line emission in the solar atmosphere requires models which are fundamentally different depending on whether the emission is from the chromosphere or the corona. At some point between the two regions, there must be a change between the two modelling regimes. Recent extensions to the coronal modelling for carbon and oxygen lines in the solar transition region have shown improvements in the emission of singly- and doubly-charged ions, along with Li-like ions. However, discrepancies still remain, particularly for singly-charged ions and intercombination lines. The aim of this work is t…
Cold molecules provide an excellent platform for quantum information, cold chemistry, and precision measurement. Certain molecules have enhanced sensitivity to beyond Standard Model physics, such as the electron's electric dipole moment ($e$EDM). Molecular ions are easily trappable and are therefore particularly attractive for precision measurements where sensitivity scales with interrogation time. Here, we demonstrate a spin precession measurement with second-scale coherence at the quantum projection noise (QPN) limit with hundreds of trapped molecular ions, chosen for their sensitivity to th…
We report on charge state measurements of laser-accelerated carbon ions in the energy range of several MeV penetrating a dense partially ionized plasma. The plasma was generated by irradiation of a foam target with laser-induced hohlraum radiation in the soft X-ray regime. We used the tri-cellulose acetate (C$_{9}$H$_{16}$O$_{8}$) foam of 2 mg/cm$^{-3}$ density, and $1$-mm interaction length as target material. This kind of plasma is advantageous for high-precision measurements, due to good uniformity and long lifetime compared to the ion pulse length and the interaction duration. The plasma p…
More than 19,700 transitions belonging to 11 isotopologues of carbon dioxide have been assigned in the room temperature absorption spectrum of highly 18O enriched carbon dioxide recorded by very high sensitivity CW-Cavity Ring Down spectroscopy between 5851 and 6990 cm-1 (1.71-1.43 \mum). This third and last report is devoted to the analysis of the bands of five 17O containing isotopologues present at very low concentration in the studied spectra: 16O12C17O, 17O12C18O, 16O13C17O, 17O13C18O and 12C17O2 (627, 728, 637, 738 and 727 in short hand notation). On the basis of the predictions of effec…
We have developed one electron detachment theory from a closed-shell atomic configuration in the relativistic Fock-space coupled-cluster ansatz. Using this method, we determine sensitivity coefficients to the variation of the fine structure constant in the first three important low-lying transitions of the astrophysically interesting highly charged Mn IX, Fe X, Co XI and Ni XII ions. The potential of this method has been assessed by evaluating the detachment energies of the removed electrons and determining lifetimes of the atomic states in the above ions. To account the sensitivity of the hig…
Promising searches for new physics beyond the current Standard Model (SM) of particle physics are feasible through isotope-shift spectroscopy, which is sensitive to a hypothetical fifth force between the neutrons of the nucleus and the electrons of the shell. Such an interaction would be mediated by a new particle which could in principle be associated with dark matter. In so-called King plots, the mass-scaled frequency shifts of two optical transitions are plotted against each other for a series of isotopes. Subtle deviations from the expected linearity could reveal such a fifth force. Here, …
A mixed-species geometric phase gate has been proposed for implementing quantum logic spectroscopy on trapped ions that combines probe and information transfer from the spectroscopy to the logic ion in a single pulse. We experimentally realize this method, show how it can be applied as a technique for identifying transitions in currently intractable atoms or molecules, demonstrate its reduced temperature sensitivity, and observe quantum-enhanced frequency sensitivity when it is applied to multi-ion chains. Potential applications include improved readout of trapped-ion clocks and simplified err…
The ability to detect extremely small forces is vital for a variety of disciplines including precision spin-resonance imaging, microscopy, and tests of fundamental physical phenomena. Current force-detection sensitivity limits have surpassed 1 $aN/\sqrt{Hz}$ (atto $=10^{-18}$) through coupling of micro or nanofabricated mechanical resonators to a variety of physical systems including single-electron transistors, superconducting microwave cavities, and individual spins. These experiments have allowed for probing studies of a variety of phenomena, but sensitivity requirements are ever-increasing…
We calculate isotope mass shift for several light ions using Dirac wave functions and mass shift operator with relativistic corrections of the order of $(αZ)^2$. Calculated relativistic corrections to the specific mass shift vary from a fraction of a percent for Carbon, to 2% for Magnesium. Relativistic corrections to the normal mass shift are typically smaller. Interestingly, the final relativistic mass shifts for the levels of one multiplet appear to be even closer than for non-relativistic operator. That can be important for the astrophysical search for possible $α$-variation, where isotope…
A high-precision relativistic calculations of Cd-like Nd$^{12+}$, Sm$^{14+}$ and Sn-like Pr$^{9+}$, Nd$^{10+}$ atomic properties is carried out using an approach that combines configuration interaction and a linearized coupled-cluster method. These ions have long-lived metastable states with transitions accessible by laser excitations, relatively simple electronic structure, high sensitivity to $α$ variation, and stable isotopes. Breit and QED corrections were included into the calculations. Energies, transition wavelengths, electric- and magnetic-multipole reduced matrix elements, lifetimes, …
