We present a reformulation of modularity that allows the analysis of the community structure in networks of correlated data. The new modularity preserves the probabilistic semantics of the original definition even when the network is directed, weighted, signed, and has self-loops. This is the most general condition one can find in the study of any network, in particular those defined from correlated data. We apply our results to a real network of correlated data between stores in the city of Lyon (France).
The identification of the minimal set of nodes that maximizes the propagation of information is one of the most relevant problems in network science. In this paper, we introduce a new method to find the set of initial spreaders to maximize the information propagation in complex networks. We evaluate this method in assortative networks and verify that degree-degree correlation plays a fundamental role in the spreading dynamics. Simulation results show that our algorithm is statistically similar, regarding the average size of outbreaks, to the greedy approach in real-world networks. However, our…
A challenging problem in the study of complex systems is that of resolving, without prior information, the emergent, mesoscopic organization determined by groups of units whose dynamical activity is more strongly correlated internally than with the rest of the system. The existing techniques to filter correlations are not explicitly oriented towards identifying such modules and can suffer from an unavoidable information loss. A promising alternative is that of employing community detection techniques developed in network theory. Unfortunately, this approach has focused predominantly on replaci…
The role of weight on the weighted networks is investigated by studying the effect of weight on community structures. We use weighted modularity $Q^w$ to evaluate the partitions and Weighted Extremal Optimization algorithm to detect communities. Starting from idealized and empirical weighted networks, the distribution or matching between weights and edges are disturbed. Using dissimilarity function $D$ to distinguish the difference between community structures, it is found that the redistribution of weights does strongly affect the community structure especially in dense networks. This indicat…
We show that the community structure of a network can be used as a coarse version of its embedding in a hidden space with hyperbolic geometry. The finding emerges from a systematic analysis of several real-world and synthetic networks. We take advantage of the analogy for reinterpreting results originally obtained through network hyperbolic embedding in terms of community structure only. First, we show that the robustness of a multiplex network can be controlled by tuning the correlation between the community structures across different layers. Second, we deploy an efficient greedy protocol fo…
As two main focuses of the study of complex networks, the community structure and the dynamics on networks have both attracted much attention in various scientific fields. However, it is still an open question how the community structure is associated with the dynamics on complex networks. In this paper, through investigating the diffusion process taking place on networks, we demonstrate that the intrinsic community structure of networks can be revealed by the stable local equilibrium states of the diffusion process. Furthermore, we show that such community structure can be directly identified…
The social network formed by the collaboration between rappers is studied using standard statistical techniques for analyzing complex networks. In addition, the community structure of the rap music community is analyzed using a new method that uses weighted edges to determine which connections are most important and revealing among all the communities. The results of this method as well as possible reasons for the structure of the rap music community are discussed.
It has been shown that the communities of complex networks often overlap with each other. However, there is no effective method to quantify the overlapping community structure. In this paper, we propose a metric to address this problem. Instead of assuming that one node can only belong to one community, our metric assumes that a maximal clique only belongs to one community. In this way, the overlaps between communities are allowed. To identify the overlapping community structure, we construct a maximal clique network from the original network, and prove that the optimization of our metric on t…
In this paper, we propose a novel semi-parametric probabilistic model which considers interactions between different communities and can provide more information about the network topology besides correctly detecting communities. By using an additional parameter, our model can not only detect community structure but also detect pattern which is a generalization of common sense network community structure. The prior parameter in our model reveals the characteristics of patterns inside the network. Results on some widely known data sets prove the efficiency of our model.
We study the community structure of the multi-network of commodity-specific trade relations among world countries over the 1992-2003 period. We compare structures across commodities and time by means of the normalized mutual information index (NMI). We also compare them with exogenous community structures induced by geographical distances and regional trade agreements. We find that commodity-specific community structures are very heterogeneous and much more fragmented than that characterizing the aggregate ITN. This shows that the aggregate properties of the ITN may result (and be very differe…
This paper uses a database of collaboration recording between Econophysics Scientists to study the community structure of this collaboration network, which with a single type of vertex and a type of undirected, weighted edge. Hierarchical clustering and the algorithm of Girvan and Newman are presented to analyze the data. And it emphasizes the influence of the weight to results of communities by comparing the different results obtained in different weights. A function D is proposed to distinguish the difference between above results. At last the paper also gives explanation to the results and …
We investigate the widely encountered problem of detecting communities in multiplex networks, such as social networks, with an unknown arbitrary heterogeneous structure. To improve detectability, we propose a generative model that leverages the multiplicity of a single community in multiple layers, with no prior assumption on the relation of communities among different layers. Our model relies on a novel idea of incorporating a large set of generic localized community label constraints across the layers, in conjunction with the celebrated Stochastic Block Model (SBM) in each layer. Accordingly…
Empirical studies show that real world networks often exhibit multiple scales of topological descriptions. However, it is still an open problem how to identify the intrinsic multiple scales of networks. In this article, we consider detecting the multi-scale community structure of network from the perspective of dimension reduction. According to this perspective, a covariance matrix of network is defined to uncover the multi-scale community structure through the translation and rotation transformations. It is proved that the covariance matrix is the unbiased version of the well-known modularity…
As social behavior plays an essential role in people's lives, the features of face-to-face interaction networks must be examined to understand people's social behavior. In this study, we focused on the stable community structure of a face-to-face interaction network because it explains the persistent communities caused by the stationary communication patterns of citizens and visitors in a city. We regarded citizens and visitors as two kinds of particles and the community as a phase and theorized the stability of the community structure using the equilibrium conditions among communities. We for…
Many real-world networks display a natural bipartite structure. It is necessary and important to study the bipartite networks by using the bipartite structure of the data. Here we propose a modification of the clustering coefficient given by the fraction of cycles with size four in bipartite networks. Then we compare the two definitions in a special graph, and the results show that the modification one is better to character the network. Next we define a edge-clustering coefficient of bipartite networks to detect the community structure in original bipartite networks.
Nowadays, evidence is mounting that the race of living organisms for adaptation to the chemicals synthesized by their neighbours may drive community structures. Particularly, some bacterial infections and plant invasions disruptive of the native community rely on the release of allelochemicals that inhibit or kill sensitive strains or individuals from their own or other species. In this report, an eco-evolutionary model for community assembly through resource competition, allelophatic interactions, and evolutionary branching is presented and studied by numerical analysis. Our major findings ar…
Community detecting is one of the main approaches to understanding networks \cite{For2010}. However it has been a longstanding challenge to give a definition for community structures of networks. Here we found that community structures are definable in networks, and are universal in real world. We proposed the notions of entropy- and conductance-community structure ratios. It was shown that the definitions of the modularity proposed in \cite{NG2004}, and our entropy- and conductance-community structures are equivalent in defining community structures of networks, that randomness in the ER mode…
We found that neither randomness in the ER model nor the preferential attachment in the PA model is the mechanism of community structures of networks, that community structures are universal in real networks, that community structures are definable in networks, that communities are interpretable in networks, and that homophyly is the mechanism of community structures and a structural theory of networks. We proposed the notions of entropy- and conductance-community structures. It was shown that the two definitions of the entropy- and conductance-community structures and the notion of modularity…
In this work we study diffusion in networks with community structure. We first replicate and extend work on networks with non-overlapping community structure. We then study diffusion on network models that have overlapping community structure. We study contagions in the standard SIR model, and complex contagions thought to be better models of some social diffusion processes. Finally, we investigate diffusion on empirical networks with known overlapping community structure, by analysing the structure of such networks, and by simulating contagion on them. We find that simple and complex contagio…
Community structure analysis is a powerful tool for complex networks, which can simplify their functional analysis considerably. Recently, many approaches were proposed to community structure detection, but few works were focused on the significance of community structure. Since real networks obtained from complex systems always contain error links, and most of the community detection algorithms have random factors, evaluate the significance of community structure is important and urgent. In this paper, we use the eigenvectors' stability to characterize the significance of community structures…
An indicator for presence of community structure in networks is suggested. It allows one to check whether such structures can exist, in principle, in any particular network, without a need to apply computationally cost algorithms. In this way we exclude a large class of networks that do not possess any community structure.

In our work we analyse the political disaffection or "the subjective feeling of powerlessness, cynicism, and lack of confidence in the political process, politicians, and democratic institutions, but with no questioning of the political regime" by exploiting Twitter data through machine learning techniques. In order to validate the quality of the time-series generated by the Twitter data, we highlight the relations of these data with political disaffection as measured by means of public opinion surveys. Moreover, we show that important political news of Italian newspapers are often correlated …
We introduce a new conception of community structure, which we refer to as hidden community structure. Hidden community structure refers to a specific type of overlapping community structure, in which the detection of weak, but meaningful, communities is hindered by the presence of stronger communities. We present Hidden Community Detection HICODE, an algorithm template that identifies both the strong, dominant community structure as well as the weaker, hidden community structure in networks. HICODE begins by first applying an existing community detection algorithm to a network, and then remov…
Online gaming is a multi-billion dollar industry that entertains a large, global population. One unfortunate phenomenon, however, poisons the competition and the fun: cheating. The costs of cheating span from industry-supported expenditures to detect and limit cheating, to victims' monetary losses due to cyber crime. This paper studies cheaters in the Steam Community, an online social network built on top of the world's dominant digital game delivery platform. We collected information about more than 12 million gamers connected in a global social network, of which more than 700 thousand have t…
While there has been a plethora of approaches for detecting disjoint communities from real-world complex networks, some methods for detecting overlapping community structures have also been recently proposed. In this work, we argue that, instead of developing separate approaches for detecting overlapping communities, a promising alternative is to infer the overlapping communities from multiple disjoint community structures. We propose an ensemble-based approach, called EnCoD, that leverages the solutions produced by various disjoint community detection algorithms to discover the overlapping co…
Community detection algorithms are fundamental tools to understand organizational principles in social networks. With the increasing power of social media platforms, when detecting communities there are two possi- ble sources of information one can use: the structure of social network and node attributes. However structure of social networks and node attributes are often interpreted separately in the research of community detection. When these two sources are interpreted simultaneously, one common as- sumption shared by previous studies is that nodes attributes are correlated with communities.…
Many social and biological networks consist of communities - groups of nodes within which connections are dense, but between which connections are sparser. Recently, there has been considerable interest in designing algorithms for detecting community structures in real-world complex networks. In this paper, we propose an evolving network model which exhibits community structure. The network model is based on the inner-community preferential attachment and inter-community preferential attachment mechanisms. The degree distributions of this network model are analyzed based on a mean-field method…
Theory of complex networks proved successful in the description of a variety of static networks ranging from biology to computer and social sciences and to economics and finance. Here we use network models to describe the evolution of a particular economic system, namely the International Trade Network (ITN). Previous studies often assume that globalization and regionalization in international trade are contradictory to each other. We re-examine the relationship between globalization and regionalization by viewing the international trade system as an interdependent complex network. We use the …
Community structures detection in signed network is very important for understanding not only the topology structures of signed networks, but also the functions of them, such as information diffusion, epidemic spreading, etc. In this paper, we develop a joint nonnegative matrix factorization model to detect community structures. In addition, we propose modified partition density to evaluate the quality of community structures. We use it to determine the appropriate number of communities. The effectiveness of our approach is demonstrated based on both synthetic and real-world networks.
Community Discovery in complex networks is the problem of detecting, for each node of the network, its membership to one of more groups of nodes, the communities, that are densely connected, or highly interactive, or, more in general, similar, according to a similarity function. So far, the problem has been widely studied in monodimensional networks, i.e. networks where only one connection between two entities can exist. However, real networks are often multidimensional, i.e., multiple connections between any two nodes can exist, either reflecting different kinds of relationships, or represent…
Community detection and edge prediction are both forms of link mining: they are concerned with discovering the relations between vertices in networks. Some of the vertex similarity measures used in edge prediction are closely related to the concept of community structure. We use this insight to propose a novel method for improving existing community detection algorithms by using a simple vertex similarity measure. We show that this new strategy can be more effective in detecting communities than the basic community detection algorithms.
Many real-world networks display a community structure. We study two random graph models that create a network with similar community structure as a given network. One model preserves the exact community structure of the original network, while the other model only preserves the set of communities and the vertex degrees. These models show that community structure is an important determinant of the behavior of percolation processes on networks, such as information diffusion or virus spreading: the community structure can both \textit{enforce} as well as \textit{inhibit} diffusion processes. Our…
Core-periphery structure and community structure are two typical meso-scale structures in complex networks. Though the community detection has been extensively investigated from different perspectives, the definition and the detection of core-periphery structure have not received much attention. Furthermore, the detection problems of the core-periphery and community structure were separately investigated. In this paper, we develop a unified framework to simultaneously detect core-periphery structure and community structure in complex networks. Moreover, there are several extra advantages of ou…
One of the most prominent properties in real-world networks is the presence of a community structure, i.e. dense and loosely interconnected groups of nodes called communities. In an attempt to better understand this concept, we study the relationship between the strength of the community structure and the network transitivity (or clustering coefficient). Although intuitively appealing, this analysis was not performed before. We adopt an approach based on random models to empirically study how one property varies depending on the other. It turns out the transitivity increases with the community…
The relationship of friends in social networks can be strong or weak. Some research works have shown that a close relationship between friends conducts good community structure. Based on this result, we propose an effective method in detecting community structure in social networks based on the closeness of relations among neighbors. This method calculates the gravity between each neighbor node to core nodes, then makes judgement if the node should be classified in the community or not, and finally form the process of community detection. The experimental results show that the proposed method …
We explore the statistical structure of scientific community based on multivariate analysis of publication (or other identifiable metrics) distribution in the author space. Here, we define community based on keywords, i.e. projecting semantic content of the documents on predefined meanings; however, more complex approaches based on semantic clustering of publications are possible. Remarkably, this simple statistical analysis of publication metadata allows understanding of internal interactions with community in general agreement with experience acquired over decades of social interaction withi…
We present a new layout algorithm for complex networks that combines a multi-scale approach for community detection with a standard force-directed design. Since community detection is computationally cheap, we can exploit the multi-scale approach to generate network configurations with close-to-minimal energy very fast. As a further asset, we can use the knowledge of the community structure to facilitate the interpretation of large networks, for example the network defined by protein-protein interactions.
Although community structure is ubiquitous in complex networks, few works exploit this topological property to control epidemics. In this work, devoted to networks with non-overlapping community structure (i.e, a node belongs to a single community), we propose and investigate three deterministic immunization strategies. In order to characterize the influence of a node, various pieces of information are used such as the number of communities that the node can reach in one hop, the nature of the links (intra community links, inter community links), the size of the communities, and the interconne…
Network communities represent mesoscopic structure for understanding the organization of real-world networks, where nodes often belong to multiple communities and form overlapping community structure in the network. Due to non-triviality in finding the exact boundary of such overlapping communities, this problem has become challenging, and therefore huge effort has been devoted to detect overlapping communities from the network. In this paper, we present PVOC (Permanence based Vertex-replication algorithm for Overlapping Community detection), a two-stage framework to detect overlapping communi…
The observation that real complex networks have internal structure has important implication for dynamic processes occurring on such topologies. Here we investigate the impact of community structure on a model of information transfer able to deal with both search and congestion simultaneously. We show that networks with fuzzy community structure are more efficient in terms of packet delivery that those with pronounced community structure. We also propose an alternative packet routing algorithm which takes advantage of the knowledge of communities to improve information transfer and show that i…
Community detection emerges as an important task in the discovery of network mesoscopic structures. However, the concept of a "good" community is very context-dependent and it is relatively complicated to deduce community characteristics using available community detection techniques. In reality, the existence of a gap between structural goodness quality metrics and expected topological patterns creates a confusion in evaluating community structures. In this paper, we introduce an empirical multivariate analysis of different structural goodness properties in order to characterize several detec…
Though much work has been done on ensemble clustering in data mining, the application of ensemble methods to community detection in networks is in its infancy. In this paper, we propose two ensemble methods: ENDISCO and MEDOC. ENDISCO performs disjoint community detection. In contrast, MEDOC performs disjoint, overlapping, and fuzzy community detection and represents the first ever ensemble method for fuzzy and overlapping community detection. We run extensive experiments with both algorithms against both synthetic and several real-world datasets for which community structures are known. We sh…
Clustering and community structure is crucial for many network systems and the related dynamic processes. It has been shown that communities are usually overlapping and hierarchical. However, previous methods investigate these two properties of community structure separately. This paper proposes an algorithm (EAGLE) to detect both the overlapping and hierarchical properties of complex community structure together. This algorithm deals with the set of maximal cliques and adopts an agglomerative framework. The quality function of modularity is extended to evaluate the goodness of a cover. The ex…
Various models have been recently proposed to reflect and predict different properties of complex networks. However, the community structure, which is one of the most important properties, is not well studied and modeled. In this paper, we suggest a principle called "preferential placement", which allows to model a realistic clustering structure. We provide an extensive empirical analysis of the obtained structure as well as some theoretical results.
In this paper we compare the social network structure of people talking about Crohn's disease, Cystic Fibrosis, and Type 1 diabetes on Facebook and Twitter. We find that the Crohn's community's contributors are most emotional on Facebook and Twitter and most negative on Twitter, while the T1D community's communication network structure is most cohesive.
Community structure is of paramount importance for the understanding of complex networks. Consequently, there is a tremendous effort in order to develop efficient community detection algorithms. Unfortunately, the issue of a fair assessment of these algorithms is a thriving open question. If the ground-truth community structure is available, various clustering-based metrics are used in order to compare it versus the one discovered by these algorithms. However, these metrics defined at the node level are fairly insensitive to the variation of the overall community structure. To overcome these l…
We compare recent approaches to community structure identification in terms of sensitivity and computational cost. The recently proposed modularity measure is revisited and the performance of the methods as applied to ad hoc networks with known community structure, is compared. We find that the most accurate methods tend to be more computationally expensive, and that both aspects need to be considered when choosing a method for practical purposes. The work is intended as an introduction as well as a proposal for a standard benchmark test of community detection methods.
This study relates the local property of node dominance to local and global properties of a network. Iterative removal of dominated nodes yields a distributed algorithm for computing a core-periphery decomposition of a social network, where nodes in the network core are seen to be essential in terms of network flow and global structure. Additionally, the connected components in the periphery give information about the community structure of the network, aiding in community detection. A number of explicit results are derived, relating the core and periphery to network flow, community structure …
Most real-world social networks are inherently dynamic, composed of communities that are constantly changing in membership. To track these evolving communities, we need dynamic community detection techniques. This article evaluates the performance of a set of game theoretic approaches for identifying communities in dynamic networks. Our method, D-GT (Dynamic Game Theoretic community detection), models each network node as a rational agent who periodically plays a community membership game with its neighbors. During game play, nodes seek to maximize their local utility by joining or leaving the…
Community structure plays a significant role in the analysis of social networks and similar graphs, yet this structure is little understood and not well captured by most models. We formally define a community to be a subgraph that is internally highly connected and has no deeper substructure. We use tools of combinatorics to show that any such community must contain a dense Erdös-Rényi (ER) subgraph. Based on mathematical arguments, we hypothesize that any graph with a heavy-tailed degree distribution and community structure must contain a scale free collection of dense ER subgraphs. These the…
The analysis of stability of community structure is an important problem for scientists from many fields. Here, we propose a new framework to reveal hidden properties of community structure by quantitatively analyzing the dynamics of Potts model. Specifically we model the Potts procedure of community structure detection by a Markov process, which has a clear mathematical explanation. Critical topological information regarding to multivariate spin configuration could also be inferred from the spectral significance of the Markov process. We test our framework on some example networks and find it…
The goal of community detection algorithms is to identify densely-connected units within large networks. An implicit assumption is that all the constituent nodes belong equally to their associated community. However, some nodes are more important in the community than others. To date, efforts have been primarily driven to identify communities as a whole, rather than understanding to what extent an individual node belongs to its community. Therefore, most metrics for evaluating communities, for example modularity, are global. These metrics produce a score for each community, not for each indivi…
In this paper a simple but efficient real-time detecting algorithm is proposed for tracking community structure of dynamic networks. Community structure is intuitively characterized as divisions of network nodes into subgroups, within which nodes are densely connected while between which they are sparsely connected. To evaluate the quality of community structure of a network, a metric called modularity is proposed and many algorithms are developed on optimizing it. However, most of the modularity based algorithms deal with static networks and cannot be performed frequently, due to their high c…
Community structure is one of the most important properties of networks. Most community algorithms are not suitable for large networks because of their time consuming. In fact there are lots of networks with millons even billons of nodes. In such case, most algorithms running in time O(n2logn) or even larger are not practical. What we need are linear or approximately linear time algorithm. Rising in response to such needs, we propose a quick methods to evaluate community structure in networks and then put forward a local community algorithm with nearly linear time based on random walks. Using …
The discovery of community structure is a common challenge in the analysis of network data. Many methods have been proposed for finding community structure, but few have been proposed for determining whether the structure found is statistically significant or whether, conversely, it could have arisen purely as a result of chance. In this paper we show that the significance of community structure can be effectively quantified by measuring its robustness to small perturbations in network structure. We propose a suitable method for perturbing networks and a measure of the resulting change in comm…
Constrained clustering has been well-studied in the unsupervised learning society. However, how to encode constraints into community structure detection, within complex networks, remains a challenging problem. In this paper, we propose a semi-supervised learning framework for community structure detection. This framework implicitly encodes the must-link and cannot-link constraints by modifying the adjacency matrix of network, which can also be regarded as de-noising the consensus matrix of community structures. Our proposed method gives consideration to both the topology and the functions (bac…
The discovery of community structure in networks is a problem of considerable interest in recent years. In online social networks, often times, users are simultaneously involved in multiple social media sites, some of which share common social relationships. It is of great interest to uncover a shared community structure across these networks. However, in reality, users typically identify themselves with different usernames across social media sites. This creates a great difficulty in detecting the community structure. In this paper, we explore several approaches for community detection across…
Current community detection algorithms operate by optimizing a statistic called modularity, which analyzes the distribution of positively weighted edges in a network. Modularity does not account for negatively weighted edges. This paper introduces a dual assortative modularity measure (DAMM) that incorporates both positively and negatively weighted edges. We describe the the DAMM statistic and illustrate its utility in a community detection algorithm. We evaluate the efficacy of the algorithm on both computer generated and real-world networks, showing that DAMM broadens the domain of networks …
