While quantum computers are capable of simulating many quantum systems efficiently, the simulation algorithms must begin with the preparation of an appropriate initial state. We present a method for generating physically relevant quantum states on a lattice in real space. In particular, the present algorithm is able to prepare general pure and mixed many-particle states of any number of particles. It relies on a procedure for converting from a second-quantized state to its first-quantized counterpart. The algorithm is efficient in that it operates in time that is polynomial in all the essential descriptors of the system, such the number of particles, the resolution of the lattice, and the inverse of the maximum final error. This scaling holds under the assumption that the wavefunction to be prepared is bounded or its indefinite integral known and that the Fock operator of the system is efficiently simulatable.
We investigate a one-dimensional atomic lattice laser-driven to a Rydberg state, in which engineered dissipation channels lead to entanglement in the many-body system. In particular, we demonstrate the efficient generation of ground states of a frustration-free Hamiltonian, as well as $W$ states. We discuss the realization of the required coherent and dissipative terms, and we perform extensive numerical simulations characterizing the fidelity of the state preparation procedure. We identify the optimum parameters for high fidelity entanglement preparation and investigate the scaling with the s…
We estimate the resources required to prepare the ground state of a quantum many-body system on a quantum computer of intermediate size. This estimate is made possible using a combination of quantum many-body methods and analytic upper bounds. Our routine can also be used to optimize certain design parameters for specific problem instances. Lastly, we propose and benchmark an improved quantum state preparation procedure. We find that it reduces the circuit T-depth by a factor as large as $10^6$ for intermediate-size lattices.
Quantum simulation of many-body systems are one of the most interesting tasks of quantum technology. Among them is the preparation of a many-body system in its ground state when the vanishing energy gap makes the cooling mechanisms ineffective. Adiabatic theorem, as an alternative to cooling, can be exploited for driving the many-body system to its ground state. In this paper, we study two most common disorders in quantum dot arrays, namely exchange coupling fluctuations and hyperfine interaction, in adiabatically preparation of ground state in such systems. We show that the adiabatic ground s…
Certain quantum many-body ground states can be prepared by a large-depth quantum circuit consisting of geometrically local gates. In the presence of noise, local expectation values deviate from the correct value at most by an amount comparable to the noise rate. This happens if the action of the noiseless circuit, restricted to certain subsystems, rapidly mixes local observables up to a small correction. The encoding circuit for the surface code is given as an example.
We present a technique for the dissipative preparation of highly entangled multiparticle states of atoms coupled to common oscillator modes. By combining local spontaneous emission with coherent couplings we engineer many-body dissipation that drives the system from an arbitrary initial state into a Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger state. We demonstrate that using our technique, highly entangled steady states can be prepared efficiently in a time that scales polynomially with the system size. Our protocol assumes generic couplings and will thus enable the dissipative production of multiparticle ent…
We propose and analyze nonlinear optomechanical protocols that can be implemented by adding a single atom to an optomechanical cavity. In particular, we show how to engineer the environment in order to dissipatively prepare the mechanical oscillator in a superposition of Fock states with fidelity close to one. Furthermore, we discuss how a single atom in a cavity with several mechanical oscillators can be exploited to realize nonlinear many-body physics by stroboscopically driving the mechanical oscillators. We show how to prepare non-classical many-body states by either applying coherent prot…
We analyze a technique for the preparation of low entropy many body states of atoms in optical lattices based on adiabatic passage. In particular, we show that this method allows preparation of strongly correlated states as stable highest energy states of Hamiltonians that have trivial ground states. As an example, we analyze the generation of antiferromagnetically ordered states by adiabatic change of a staggered field acting on the spins of bosonic atoms with ferromagnetic interactions.
Strongly-correlated polaritons in Jaynes-Cummings (JC) lattices can exhibit quantum phase transitions between the Mott-insulating and superfluid phases at integer fillings. The prerequisite to observe such phase transitions is to pump polariton excitations into a JC lattice and prepare them into appropriate ground states. Despite previous efforts, it is still challenging to generate many-body states with high accuracy. Here we present an approach for the robust preparation of many-body ground states of polaritons in finite-sized JC lattices by optimized nonlinear ramping. We apply a Landau-Zen…

We present a driven dissipative protocol for creating an optical analog of the Laughlin state in a system of Rydberg polaritons in a twisted optical cavity. We envision resonantly driving the system into a 4-polariton state by injecting photons in carefully selected modes. The dissipative nature of the polariton-polariton interactions leads to a decay into a two-polariton analog of the Laughlin state. Generalizations of this technique could be used to explore fractional statistics and anyon based quantum information processing. We also model recent experiments that attempt to coherently drive …
Many-body ground states can be prepared via unitary evolution in cold atomic systems. Given the initial state and a fixed time for the evolution, how close can we get to a desired ground state if we can tune the Hamiltonian in time? Here we study this optimal control problem focusing on Luttinger liquids with tunable interactions. We show that the optimal protocol can be obtained by simulated annealing. We find that the optimal interaction strength of the Luttinger liquid can have a nonmonotonic time dependence. Moreover, the system exhibits a marked transition when the ratio $τ/L$ of the prep…
Starting from the Quantum-Phase-Estimate (QPE) algorithm, a method is proposed to construct entangled states that describe correlated many-body systems on quantum computers. Using operators for which the discrete set of eigenvalues is known, the QPE approach is followed by measurements that serve as projectors on the entangled states. These states can then be used as inputs for further quantum or hybrid quantum-classical processing. When the operator is associated to a symmetry of the Hamiltonian, the approach can be seen as a quantum--computer formulation of symmetry breaking followed by symm…

We approach the long-standing problem of preparing an out-of-equilibrium many-body Chern insulator (CI) and associated bulk-boundary correspondence unitarily. Herein, this is addressed by constructing a dynamical many-body Chern invariant exploiting the property of the bulk macroscopic electric polarisation (Resta polarisation) of the CI. This Chern invariant defined from observable correlations is also established to topologically classify many body Chern states in equilibrium. The non-equilibrium behavior of the invariant is probed by ramping the paradigmatic Haldane model of graphene from i…
We show that dissipative quantum state preparation processes can be protected against qubit dephasing by interlacing the state preparation control with dynamical decoupling (DD) control consisting of a sequence of short $π$-pulses. The inhomogeneous broadening can be suppressed to second order of the pulse interval, and the protection efficiency is nearly independent of the pulse sequence but determined by the average interval between pulses. The DD protection is numerically tested and found to be efficient against inhomogeneous dephasing on two exemplary dissipative state preparation schemes …

We propose a method based on deep reinforcement learning that efficiently prepares a quantum many-body pure state in thermal or prethermal equilibrium. The main physical intuition underlying the method is that the information on the equilibrium states can be efficiently encoded/extracted by focusing on only a few local observables, relying on the typicality of equilibrium states. Instead of resorting to the expensive preparation protocol that adopts global features such as the quantum state fidelity, we show that the equilibrium states can be efficiently prepared only by learning the expectati…
We propose and analyze a method for efficient dissipative preparation of matrix product states that exploits their symmetry properties. Specifically, we construct an explicit protocol that makes use of driven-dissipative dynamics to prepare a many-body quantum state that features symmetry-protected topological order and non-trivial edge excitations. The preparation protocol is protected from errors that respect the symmetry, allowing for robust experimental implementation without fine-tuned control. Numerical simulations show that the preparation time scales polynomially in system size $n$. Fu…
We prepare and study a metastable attractive Mott insulator state formed with bosonic atoms in a three-dimensional optical lattice. Starting from a Mott insulator with Cs atoms at weak repulsive interactions, we use a magnetic Feshbach resonance to tune the interactions to large attractive values and produce a metastable state pinned by attractive interactions with a lifetime on the order of 10 seconds. We probe the (de-)excitation spectrum via lattice modulation spectroscopy, measuring the interaction dependence of two- and three-body bound state energies. As a result of increased on-site thr…
We propose a quantum algorithm for many-body state preparation. It is especially suited for injective PEPS and thermal states of local commuting Hamiltonians on a lattice. We show that for a uniform gap and sufficiently smooth paths, an adiabatic runtime and circuit depth of $O(\operatorname{polylog}N)$ can be achieved for $O(N)$ spins. This is an almost exponential improvement over previous bounds. The total number of elementary gates scales as $O(N\operatorname{polylog}N)$. This is also faster than the best known upper bound of $O(N^2)$ on the mixing times of Monte Carlo Markov chain algorit…
Approximating the ground states of strongly interacting electron systems in quantum chemistry and condensed matter physics is expected to be one of the earliest applications of quantum computers. In this paper, we prepare highly accurate ground states of the Fermi-Hubbard model for small grids up to 6 sites (12 qubits) by using an interpretable, adaptive variational quantum eigensolver(VQE) called ADAPT-VQE. In contrast with non-adaptive VQE, this algorithm builds a system-specific ansatz by adding an optimal gate built from one-body or two-body fermionic operators at each step. We show this a…
We present a protocol to store a polynomial number of arbitrary bit strings, encoded as spin configurations, in the approximately degenerate low-energy manifold of an all-to-all connected Ising spin glass. The iterative protocol is inspired by machine learning techniques utilizing $k$-local Hopfield networks trained with $k$-local Hebbian learning and unlearning. The trained Hamiltonian is the basis of a quantum state-preparation scheme to create quantum many-body superpositions with tunable squared amplitudes using resources available in near term experiments. We find that the number of confi…
We present a technique to control the spatial state of a small cloud of interacting particles at low temperatures with almost perfect fidelity using spatial adiabatic passage. To achieve this, the resonant trap energies of the system are engineered in such a way that a single, well-defined eigenstate connects the initial and desired states and is isolated from the rest of the spectrum. We apply this procedure to the task of separating a well-defined number of particles from an initial cloud and show that it can be implemented in radio-frequency traps using experimentally realistic parameters.
Considering coupling to a micro-structured bath as a relaxation mechanism in a periodically driven dissipative Haldane model, we establish that the system may be tuned to a stroboscopic topological steady state at all finite temperatures. The amplitude and frequency of the periodic drive is so chosen that the Floquet Hamiltonian describing the Haldane model at stroboscopic instants of time in the unitary situation is topologically non-trivial. We establish that in the stroboscopic steady state, the system reaches a thermal state of the Floquet Hamiltonian at a controlled temperature. Further, …
Black-box quantum state preparation is an important subroutine in many quantum algorithms. The standard approach requires the quantum computer to do arithmetic, which is a key contributor to the complexity. Here we present a new algorithm that avoids arithmetic. We thereby reduce the number of gates by a factor of 286-374 over the best prior work for realistic precision; the improvement factor increases with the precision. As quantum state preparation is a crucial subroutine in many approaches to simulating physics on a quantum computer, our new method brings useful quantum simulation closer t…
Preparing the ground states of a many-body system is essential for evaluating physical quantities and determining the properties of materials. This work provides a quantum ground state preparation scheme with shallow variational warm-start to tackle the bottlenecks of current algorithms, i.e., demand for prior ground state energy information and lack of demonstration of efficient initial state preparation. Particularly, our methods would not experience the instability for small spectral gap $Δ$ during pre-encoding the phase factors since our methods involve only $\widetilde{O}(1)$ factors whil…
A key task in quantum computation is the application of a sequence of gates implementing a specific unitary operation. However, the decomposition of an arbitrary unitary operation into simpler quantum gates is a nontrivial problem. Here we propose a general and robust protocol to decompose any target unitary into a sequence of Pauli rotations. The procedure involves identifying a commuting subset of Pauli operators having a high trace overlap with the target unitary, followed by a numerical optimization of their corresponding rotation angles. The protocol is demonstrated by decomposing several…
We analyze a method for preparing low-entropy many-body states in isolated quantum optical systems of atoms, ions and molecules. Our approach is based upon shifting entropy between different regions of a system by spatially modulating the magnitude of the effective Hamiltonian. We conduct two case studies, on a topological spin chain and the spinful fermionic Hubbard model, focusing on the key question: can a "conformal cooling quench" remove sufficient entropy within experimentally accessible timescales? Finite temperature, time-dependent matrix product state calculations reveal that even mod…
We consider performing adiabatic rapid passage (ARP) using frequency-swept driving pulses to excite a collection of interacting two-level systems. Such a model arises in a wide range of many-body quantum systems, such as cavity QED or quantum dots, where a nonlinear component couples to light. We analyze the one-dimensional case using the Jordan-Wigner transformation, as well as the mean field limit where the system is described by a Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick Hamiltonian. These limits provide complementary insights into the behavior of many-body systems under ARP, suggesting our results are general…
State preparation is of fundamental importance in quantum physics, which can be realized by constructing the quantum circuit as a unitary that transforms the initial state to the target, or implementing a quantum control protocol to evolve to the target state with a designed Hamiltonian. In this work, we study the latter on quantum many-body systems by the time evolution with fixed couplings and variational magnetic fields. In specific, we consider to prepare the ground states of the Hamiltonians containing certain interactions that are missing in the Hamiltonians for the time evolution. An op…
Performance of quantum process estimation is naturally limited to fundamental, random, and systematic imperfections in preparations and measurements. These imperfections may lead to considerable errors in the process reconstruction due to the fact that standard data analysis techniques presume ideal devices. Here, by utilizing generic auxiliary quantum or classical correlations, we provide a framework for estimation of quantum dynamics via a single measurement apparatus. By construction, this approach can be applied to quantum tomography schemes with calibrated faulty state generators and anal…
The study of phases is useful for understanding novel states of matter. One such state of matter are time crystals which constitute periodically driven interacting many-body systems that spontaneously break time translation symmetry. Time crystals with arbitrary periods (and dimensions) can be realized using the model of Bose-Einstein condensates bouncing on periodically-driven mirror(s). In this work, we identify the different phases that characterize the two-dimensional time crystal. By determining the optimal initial conditions and value of system parameters, we provide a practical route to…
We analyze state preparation within a restricted space of local control parameters between adiabatically connected states of control Hamiltonians. We formulate a conjecture that the time integral of energy fluctuations over the protocol duration is bounded from below by the geodesic length set by the quantum geometric tensor. The conjecture implies a geometric lower bound for the quantum speed limit (QSL). We prove the conjecture for arbitrary, sufficiently slow protocols using adiabatic perturbation theory and show that the bound is saturated by geodesic protocols, which keep the energy varia…
The application of quantum algorithms to the study of many-particle quantum systems requires the ability to prepare wavefunctions that are relevant in the behavior of the system under study. Hamiltonian symmetries are an important instrument, to classify relevant many-particle wavefunctions, and to improve the efficiency of numerical simulations. In this work, quantum circuits for the exact and approximate preparation of total spin eigenfunctions on quantum computers are presented. Two different strategies are discussed and compared: exact recursive construction of total spin eigenfunctions ba…
