Sum frequency generation vibrational spectra of the water molecules at the NaF and KF aqueous solution surfaces showed significantly different spectral features and different concentration dependence. This result is the first direct observation of the cation effects of the simple alkali cations, which have been believed to be depleted from the aqueous surface, on the hydrogen bonding structure of the water molecules at the electrolyte solution surfaces. These observations may provide important clue to understand the fundamental phenomenon of ions at the air/water interface.
High-concentration aqueous electrolytes have shown promise as candidates for a safer, lower-cost battery system. Ionic conductivity is a key property required in high performing electrolytes; the Advanced Electrolyte Model (AEM) has previously shown great accuracy in predicting ionic conductivity in highly-concentrated non-aqueous electrolytes. This work provides extensive experimental data for mixed and highly concentrated aqueous electrolyte systems, rapidly generated via a robotic electrolyte testing apparatus. These data demonstrate exceptional accuracy from AEM in predicting conductivity …
The nature of variations of ultrasonic wave velocity(v) and attenuation constant(α) with the concentration(c) in aqueous solutions of NaCl, KCl and CsCl are investigated at room temperature(250C) at 1MHz and 2 MHz wave frequency. Fourier Spectrum Pulse-Echo (FSPE) technique is used to achieve better accuracy in measurement, particularly for α measurement. In NaCl and KCl abrupt changes in the values of v and α are noticed at particular solution concentrations whereas, for CsCl almost smooth variation in v is observed over the whole concentration range for both of the frequencies 1 and 2 MHz . …
Chemical thermodynamic models of solvent and solute activities predict the equilibrium behaviour of aqueous solutions. How-ever, these models are semi-empirical. They represent micro-scale ion and solvent behaviours that control the macroscopic properties using small numbers of parameters whose values are obtained by fitting to activities and other partial derivatives of the Gibbs energy measured for the bulk solutions. We have conducted atomistic simulations of aqueous electrolyte solutions (MgCl2 and CaCl2) to determine the parameters of aqueous thermodynamic hydration models. We have implem…
This paper presents a combined theoretical and experimental investigation of aqueous near-neutral electrolytes based on chloride salts for rechargeable zinc-air batteries (ZABs). The resilience of near-neutral chloride electrolytes in air could extend ZAB lifetime, but theory-based simulations predict that such electrolytes are vulnerable to other challenges including pH instability and the unwanted precipitation of mixed zinc hydroxide chloride products. In this work, we combine theory-based simulations with experimental methods such as full cell cycling, operando pH measurements, ex-situ XRD…
Aqueous rechargeable batteries are promising energy storage devices for the high safety, environmental friendliness, and easy assembly. However, their cycle stability and low temperature performance are limited by the narrow electrochemical stability window and the high freezing point of the aqueous electrolytes. Here, a hybrid electrolyte with a wide electrochemical window (2.15V) and a low freezing point (-60 oC) is developed by using EMIMDep as a novel additive. The hydrophobic EMIM+ accumulates on the negatively charged electrode and repels the water molecules, thus suppressing the water s…
In several industrial applications, such as crystallization, pollution control, and flow assurance, an accurate understanding of the aqueous electrolyte solutions is crucial. Electrolyte equilibrium calculation contributes with the design and optimization of processes by providing important information, such as species concentration, solution pH and potential for solid formation. In this work, a pure Python library distributed under BSD-3 license was developed for the calculation of aqueous electrolyte equilibrium. The package takes as inputs the feed components of a given solution, and it aut…
Aqueous zinc-air batteries (ZABs) are a low-cost, safe, and sustainable technology for stationary energy storage. ZABs with pH-buffered near-neutral electrolytes have the potential for longer lifetime compared to traditional alkaline ZABs due to the slower absorption of carbonates at non-alkaline pH values. However, existing near-neutral electrolytes often contain halide salts, which are corrosive and threaten the precipitation of ZnO as the dominant discharge product. This paper presents a method for designing halide-free aqueous ZAB electrolytes using thermodynamic descriptors to computation…
The structure of an aqueous solution of sodium chloride at a planar electrode is investigated by integral equation techniques. With the central force water model the aqueous electrolyte is modelled as a mixture of sodium and chloride ions and partially charged hydrogen and oxygen atoms interacting via effective spherically symmetric pair potentials. The bulk correlation functions are obtained from the Ornstein-Zernike equation. With the Wertheim-Lovett-Mou-Buff equation we have calculated the density profiles at the uncharged and charged electrode. Steric interactions between the differently s…
Hydrogen bonding to chloride ions has been frequently discussed over the past 5 decades. Still, the possible role of such secondary intermolecular bonding interactions in hydrogen bonded networks has not been investigated in any detail. Here we consider computer models of concentrated aqueous LiCl solutions and compute usual hydrogen bond network characteristics, such as distributions of cluster sizes and of cyclic entities, both for models that take and do not take chloride ions into account. During the analysis of hydrogen bonded rings, a significant amount of 'solvent separated anion pairs'…
Metal nanoparticles are receiving increased scientific attention owing to their unique physical and chemical properties that make them suitable for a wide range of applications in diverse fields, such as electrochemistry, biochemistry, and nanomedicine. Their high metallic polarizability is a crucial determinant that defines their electrostatic character in various electrolyte solutions. Here, we introduce a continuum-based model of a metal nanoparticle with explicit polarizability in the presence of different kinds of electrolytes. We employ several, variously sophisticated, theoretical appro…
Ion distribution in aqueous electrolytes near the interface plays critical roles in electrochemical, biological and colloidal systems and is expected to be particularly significant inside nanoconfined regions. Electroneutrality of the total charge inside nanoconfined regions is commonly assumed a priori in solving ion distribution of aqueous electrolytes nanoconfined by uncharged hydrophobic surfaces with no direct experimental validation. Here, we use a quantitative nuclear magnetic resonance approach to investigate the properties of aqueous electrolytes nanoconfined in graphitic-like nanopor…
When salts are added to water, the viscosity generally increases suggesting the ions increase the strength of the water's hydrogen-bond network. However, infrared pump-probe measurements on electrolyte solutions have found that ions have no influence on the rotational dynamics of water molecules implying no enhance-ment or breakdown of the hydrogen-bond network. Here we report optical Kerr-effect and dielectric relaxa-tion spectroscopic measurements, which have enabled us to separate the effects of rotational and transitional motions of the water molecules. These data show that electrolyte sol…
The ion-induced long-range orientational order between water molecules recently observed in second harmonic scattering experiments and illustrated with large scale molecular dynamics simulations is quantitatively explained using the Ornstein-Zernike integral equation approach of liquid physics. This general effect, not specific to hydrogen-bonding solvents, is controlled by electroneutrality condition, dipolar interactions and dielectric+ionic screening. As expected, all numerical theories recover the well-known analytical expressions established 40 years ago.
Lithium chloride LiCl is widely used as a prototype system to study the strongly dissociated 1-1 electrolyte solution. Here, we combined experimental measurements and classical molecular dynamics simulations to study the ion conduction in this system. Ionic conductivities were reported at both 20$^\circ$C and 50$^\circ$C from experiments and compared to results from molecular dynamics simulations. The main finding of this work is that transference numbers of Li$^+$ and Cl$^-$ become comparable at high concentration. This phenomenon is independent of the force fields employed in the simulation …
The structure and dynamics of aqueous solvation of ethanol and ethylene are studied by DFT-based Car-Parrinello molecular dynamics. We did not find an enhancement of the structure of the hydrogen bonded network of hydrating water molecules. Both ethanol and ethylene can easily be accommodated in the hydrogen-bonded network of water molecules without altering its structure. This is supports the conclusion from recent neutron diffraction experiments that there is no hydrophobic hydration around small hydrophobic groups. Analysis of the electronic charge distribution using Wannier functions shows…
The existence of an isosbestic point in the OH bond vibration band of H2O molecules in solutions of strong electrolytes has been shown by many research groups but its physical meaning has been only recently read as the equilibrium point between two populations of water molecules where either water-ion or water-water interactions respectively prevail. Thus the isosbestic point provides useful information on the bulk displacement of water molecules in presence of solutes. Herein we show that the isosbestic point occurrence is accurately described by an equation depending on the balance of the el…
Transport properties of concentrated electrolytes have been analyzed using classical molecular dynamics simulations with the algorithms and parameters typical of simulations describing complex electrokinetic phenomena. The electrical conductivity and transport numbers of electrolytes containing monovalent (KCl), divalent (MgCl$_2$), a mixture of both (KCl + MgCl$_2$), and trivalent (LaCl$_3$) cations have been obtained from simulations of the electrolytes in electric fields of different magnitude. The results obtained for different simulation parameters have been discussed and compared with ex…
We present a theoretical and numerical scheme that enables quantifying hydrogen ingress in metals for arbitrary environments and defect geometries. This is achieved by explicitly resolving the electrochemical behaviour of the electrolyte, the hydrogen and corrosion reactions, the kinetics of surface adsorption, and hydrogen uptake, diffusion and trapping in mechanically-deforming solids. This new framework is used to produce maps that relate the absorbed hydrogen with the applied potential, specimen geometry and fluid velocity. We also present simplified versions of our generalised model, and …
The study of the modification of interfacial properties between an organic solvent and aqueous electrolyte solutions is presented by using electrostatic Dissipative Particle Dynamics (DPD) simulations. In this article the parametrization for the DPD repulsive parameters aij for the electrolyte components is calculated considering the dependence of the Flory-Huggins \c{hi} parameter on the concentration and the kind of electrolyte added, by means of the activity coefficients. In turn, experimental data was used to obtain the activity coefficients of the electrolytes as a function of their conce…
Nuclear magnetic resonance relaxometry represents a powerful tool for extracting dynamic information. Yet, obtaining links to molecular motion is challenging for many ions that relax through the quadrupolar mechanism, which is mediated by electric field gradient fluctuations and lacks a detailed microscopic description. For sodium ions in aqueous electrolytes, we combine ab initio calculations to account for electron cloud effects with classical molecular dynamics to sample long-time fluctuations, and obtain relaxation rates in good agreement with experiments over broad concentration and tempe…

The Li-Air battery is a very promising candidate for powering future mobility, but finding a suitable electrolyte solvent for this technology turned out to be a major problem. We present a systematic computational investigation of the known chemical space for possible Li-Air electrolyte solvents. It is shown that the problem of finding better Li-Air electrolyte solvents is not only - as previously suggested - about maximizing Li+ and O2- solubilities, but about finding the optimal balance of these solubilities with the viscosity of the solvent. As our results also show that trial-and-error exp…
Using molecular dynamics simulations, we reveal emergent properties of hydrated electrode interfaces that while molecular in origin are integral to the behavior of the system across long times scales and large length scales. Specifically, we describe the impact of a disordered and slowly evolving adsorbed layer of water on the molecular structure and dynamics of the electrolyte solution adjacent to it. Generically, we find that densities and mobilities of both water and dissolved ions are spatially heterogeneous in the plane parallel to the electrode over nanosecond timescales. These and other…
The technique presented here for the measurement of electrical conductivity is based on the principle that the current converges on a small disk electrode. Most of the ohmic resistance therefore lies within a narrow region surrounding the disk. If the reference electrode is kept outside this zone, the potential difference between the working and the reference electrode includes practically all ohmic potential drops occurring in the solution. Moreover, this ohmic drop can be related to the conductivity of the solution by an analytical expression derived by Newman. At sufficiently high overpoten…
Although aqueous electrolytes are among the most important solutions, the molecular simulation of their intertwined properties of chemical potentials, solubility and activity coefficients has remained a challenging problem, and has attracted considerable recent interest. In this perspectives review, we focus on the simplest case of aqueous sodium chloride at ambient conditions and discuss the two main factors that have impeded progress. The first is lack of consensus with respect to the appropriate methodology for force field (FF) development. We examine how most commonly used FFs have been de…
The combinatorial explosion of empirical parameters in tens of thousands presents a tremendous challenge for extended Debye-Hückel models to calculate activity coefficients of aqueous mixtures of most important salts in chemistry. The explosion of parameters originates from the phenomenological extension of the Debye-Hückel theory that does not take steric and correlation effects of ions and water into account. In contrast, the Poisson-Fermi theory developed in recent years treats ions and water molecules as nonuniform hard spheres of any size with interstitial voids and includes ion-water and…
The use of aqueous electrolytes in energy storage devices is traditionally limited by the voltage stability window of water at 1.23 V. We present the use of a microemulsion based electrolyte which, although mostly water by mass, has a voltage stability window of up to 5 V. This allows the cost and safety benefits of aqueous electrolytes to finally be realised in high-voltage systems. Supercapacitors constructed using this electrolyte were able to achieve and maintain a capacitance of ~40 F/g and an energy density ~40 Wh/kg of with a Coulombic efficiency of 99\% for over 10,000 cycles on activa…
In spite of a large number of papers published in the last twenty years in the literature, the basic model of liquid water is still controversial. We have measured the dielectric permittivity of pure water and aqueous chlorides solutions in the range 0.2 to 1.5 THz and we have found that the overall dielectric behavior can be satisfactorily described with the weighted average of two single time constant Debye functions. The weights of the two components have been obtained by infrared spectra analysis and are related to two populations of water molecules having a different long range organizati…
Osmotic transport in nanoconfined aqueous electrolytes provides new venues for water desalination and "blue energy" harvesting; the osmotic response of nanofluidic systems is controlled by the interfacial structure of water and electrolyte solutions in the so-called electrical double layer (EDL), but a molecular-level picture of the EDL is to a large extent still lacking. Particularly, the role of the electronic structure has not been considered in the description of electrolyte/surface interactions. Here, we report enhanced sampling simulations based on ab initio molecular dynamics, aiming at…
Molecular dynamics simulations were used to explain the origin and properties of electrical double-layer capacitance in short graphene nanochannels with width below 2 nm. The results explain the previously reported experimental result on the non-monotonic dependence of the capacitance with the channel width. The mechanism for the anomalous increase of the capacitance in sub-1-nm in pore diameter is attributed here to the width-dependent radial location of counterions in the nanochannels, and the restricted number of co-ions. Decrease of the channel width lowers the number of co-ions and positi…
Tasker type III polar terminations of ionic crystals carry a net surface charge as well as a dipole moment and are fundamentally unstable. In contact with electrolytes, such polar surfaces can be stabilized by adsorption of counter ions from solution to form electric double layers (EDLs). In a previous work (J. Chem. Phys 147, 104702 (2017)) we reported on a classical force field based molecular dynamics study of a prototype model system namely a NaCl(111) slab interfaced with an aqueous NaCl solution on both sides. A serious hurdle in the simulation is that the finite width of the slab admits…
Electrostatic cooling is known to occur in conductors and in porous electrodes in contact with aqueous electrolytes. Here we present for the first time evidence of electrostatic cooling at the junction of two electrolyte phases. These are, first, water containing salt, and, second, an ion-exchange membrane, which is a water-filled porous layer containing a large concentration of fixed charges. When ionic current is directed through such a membrane in contact with aqueous phases on both sides, a temperature difference develops across the membrane which rapidly switches sign when the current dir…

The performance of gold nanoparticles (NPs) in applications depends critically on the structure of the NP-solvent interface, at which the electrostatic surface polarization is one of the key characteristics that affects hydration, ionic adsorption, and electrochemical reactions. Here, we demonstrate significant effects of explicit metal polarizability on the solvation and electrostatic properties of bare gold NPs in aqueous electrolyte solutions of sodium salts of various anions (Cl$^-$, BF$_4$$^-$, PF$_6$$^-$, Nip$^-$(nitrophenolate), and 3- and 4-valent hexacyanoferrate (HCF)), using classic…
Nanoporosity in silicon results in an interface-dominated mechanics, fluidics and photonics that are often superior to the ones of the bulk material. However, their active control, e.g. as a response to electronic stimuli, is challenging due to the absence of intrinsic piezoelectricity in the base material. Here, for large-scale nanoporous silicon cantilevers wetted by aqueous electrolytes, we show electrosorption-induced mechanical stress generation of up to 600 kPa that is reversible and adjustable at will by electrical potential variations of approximately 1 V. Laser cantilever bending expe…
Our atomistic molecular dynamics simulations reveal the existence of bound and free water molecules in the hydration layer of an aqueous micelle. The bound water molecules can be either singly or doubly hydrogen bonded to the polar head group on the surface of the micelle. The ratio of bound to free water is found to be approximately equal to 9:1 at 300 K.
Electrokinetic flows of an aqueous NaCl solution in nanochannels with negatively charged surfaces are studied using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The four transport coefficients that characterise the response to weak electric and pressure fields, namely the coefficients for the electrical current in response to the electric field ($M^{jj}$) and the pressure field ($M^{jm}$), and those for the mass flow in response to the same fields ($M^{mj}$ and $M^{mm}$), are obtained in the linear regime using a Green--Kubo approach. Nonequilibrium simulations with explicit external fields are also c…
Films of titanate nanosheets (approx. 1.8-nm layer thickness and 200-nm size) having a lamellar structure can form electrolytefilled semi-permeable channels containing tetrabutylammonium cations. By evaporation of a colloidal solution, persistent deposits are readily formed with approx. 10 micrometer thickness on a 6-micrometer-thick poly(ethylene-terephthalate) (PET) substrate with a 20 micrometer diameter microhole. When immersed in aqueous solution, the titanate nanosheets exhibit a p.z.c. of -37 mV, consistent with the formation of a cation conducting (semi-permeable) deposit. With a suffi…

Macroscopic strain experiments revealed that Si crystals traversed by parallel, channel-like nanopores functionalized with the muscle polymer polypyrrole exhibit large and reversible electrochemo-mechanical actuation in aqueous electrolytes. On the microscopical level this system still bears open questions, as to how the electrochemical expansion and contraction of PPy acts on to np-Si pore walls and how the collective motorics of the pore array emerges from the single-nanopore behavior. An analysis of in operando X-ray diffraction experiments with micromechanical finite element simulations, b…
We present a novel microfield approach for studying the dependence of the orientational polarization of the water in aqueous electrolyte solutions upon the salt concentration and temperature. The model takes into account the orientation of the solvent dipoles due to the electric field created by ions, and the effect of thermal fluctuations. The model predicts a dielectric functional dependence of the form $\varepsilon(c)=\varepsilon_w-βL(3αc/β),\quadβ=\varepsilon_w-\varepsilon_{\rm ms}$, where $L$ is the Langevin function, $c$ is the salt concentration, $\varepsilon_w$ is the dielectric of pur…
Here we report the polarization dependent non-resonant second harmonic generation (SHG) measurement of the interfacial water molecules at the aqueous solution of the following salts: NaF, NaCl, NaBr, KF, KCl, and KBr. Through quantitative polarization analysis of the SHG data, the orientational parameter D value and the relative surface density of the interfacial water molecules at these aqueous solution surfaces were determined. From these results we found that addition of each of the six salts caused increase of the thickness of the interfacial water layer at the surfaces to a certain extent.…
