CaV$_2$O$_4$ is a spin-1 antiferromagnet, where the magnetic vanadium ions are arranged on quasi-one-dimensional (1D) zig-zag chains with potentially frustrated antiferromagnetic exchange interactions. High temperature susceptibility and single-crystal neutron diffraction measurements are used to deduce the non-collinear magnetic structure, dominant exchange interactions and orbital configurations. The results suggest that at high temperatures CaV$_2$O$_4$ behaves as a Haldane chain, but at low temperatures, orbital ordering lifts the frustration and it becomes a spin-1 ladder.
The nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate (1/T1) at the V sites in CaV2O5 was measured. The result was compared with the calculation for the two-leg ladder with the strong-coupling expansion. We found a good agreement on the temperature and magnetic field dependence but a discrepancy between the exchange parameters deduced from 1/T1 and the magnetic susceptibility.
The experimental observation of a spin-gap in the antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 compound $CaV_4O_9$ has been attributed to the formation of a plaquette resonating-valence-bond (PRVB) state in the underlying 1/5-depleted square lattice. We construct a spin-1/2 model on the 1/5-depleted lattice for which the PRVB state can be shown to be the exact ground state in a particular parameter regime. In a subspace of this parameter regime, the first excited state can be calculated exactly. In a different parameter regime, the dimer state is shown to be the exact ground state.
Magnetic field induced multiple non-Dirac nodal-lines are found to emerge in the triplet dispersion bands of a frustrated spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic model on the CaVO lattice. Plaquette and bond operator formalisms have been employed to obtain the triplet plaquette and bond excitations for two different parameter regimes in the presence of nearest and next-nearest-neighbor Heisenberg interactions based on the plaquette-resonating-valence-bond and dimerized ground states, respectively. In the absence of magnetic field a pair of six-fold degenerate nodal-loops with distinct topological feature i…
We consider the spin 1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a two dimensional quasiperiodic tiling. The T=0 state is long range ordered, with an inhomogeneous distribution of the staggered moment. An approximate real space renormalization scheme first developed for the square lattice is generalized and used to obtain information on the ground state energy as well as the distribution of local correlations in the quasicrystal.
Inelastic neutron scattering experiments on the Haldane-gap quantum antiferromagnet NDMAP are performed in magnetic fields below and above the critical field Hc at which the gap closes. Quasi-elastic neutron scattering is found for H>Hc indicating topological excitations in the high field phase.
Electron spin resonance experiments in the quasi-1D S=1/2 antiferromagnet K$_2$CuSO$_4$Cl$_2$ reveal opening of a gap in absence of magnetic ordering, as well as an anisotropic shift of the resonance magnetic field. These features of magnetic excitation spectrum are explained by a crossover between a gapped spinon-type doublet ESR formed in a 1D antiferromagnet with uniform Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and a Larmor-type resonance of a quasi-1D Heisenberg system
Motivated by the quasi-1D antiferromagnet CaV$_2$O$_4$, we explore spin-orbital systems in which the spin modes are gapped but orbitals are near a macroscopically degenerate classical transition. Within a simplified model we show that gapless orbital liquid phases possessing power-law correlations may occur without the strict condition of a continuous orbital symmetry. For the model proposed for CaV$_2$O$_4$, we find that an orbital phase with coexisting order parameters emerges from a multicritical point. The effective orbital model consists of zigzag-coupled transverse field Ising chains. Th…
$^{51}$V NMR studies on CaV2O4 single crystals and $^{17}$O NMR studies on $^{17}$O-enriched powder samples are reported. The temperature dependences of the $^{17}$O NMR line width and nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate give strong evidence for a long-range antiferromagnetic transition at Tn = 78 K in the powder. Magnetic susceptibility measurements show that Tn = 69 K in the crystals. A zero-field $^{51}$V NMR signal was observed at low temperatures (f $\approx$ 237 MHz at 4.2 K) in the crystals. The field swept spectra with the field in different directions suggest the presence of two anti…
Low-temperature magnetic resonance study of the quasi-two-dimensional antiferromagnet Cu(en)(H$_2$O)$_2$SO$_4$ (en = C$_2$H$_8$N$_2$) was performed down to 0.45~K. This compound orders antiferromagnetically at 0.9K. The analysis of the resonance data within the hydrodynamic approach allowed to identify anisotropy axes and to estimate the anisotropy parameters for the antiferromagnetic phase. Dipolar spin-spin coupling turns out to be the main contribution to the anisotropy of the antiferromagnetic phase. The splitting of the resonance modes and its non-monotonous dependency on the applied freq…
We study the quenching of the Haldane gap in quasi-one-dimensional systems of weakly coupled spin-1 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chains. The critical interchain coupling Jc required to stabilize long range magnetic order can be accurately determined from large scale quantum Monte Carlo calculations. Several different geometries of coupled chains are studied, illustrating the dependence of Jc on the coordination of chains. For bipartite geometries, ferromagnetically coupled chains yield similar magnitudes for Jc.
We report elastic neutron diffraction and muon spin relaxation (muSR) measurements of the quasi one-dimensional antiferromagnets Sr2CuO3 and Ca2CuO3, which have extraordinarily reduced TN/J ratios. We observe almost resolution-limited antiferromagnetic Bragg reflections in Sr2CuO3 and obtain a reduced ordered moment size of ~0.06 \muB. We find that the ratio of ordered moment size μ(Ca2CuO3)/μ(Sr2CuO3)=1.5(1) roughly scales with their Neel temperatures, which suggests that the ordered moment size of quasi one-dimensional antiferromagnets decreases continuously in the limit of vanishing inter-c…
We investigate the magnetization process for a quasi-one-dimensional S=1 antiferromagnet with bond alternation. By combining the density matrix renormalization group method with the interchain mean-field theory, we discuss how the interchain coupling affects the magnetization curve. It is found that the width of the magnetization plateau is considerably reduced upon introducing the interchain coupling. We obtain the phase diagram in a magnetic field. The effect of single-ion anisotropy is also addressed.
The results of extensive histogram cluster heat-bath Monte Carlo simulations on the critical behavior of the quasi-one dimensional Ising antiferromagnet on a stacked triangular lattice are presented. A small applied field is shown to induce a crossover from XY universality to mean-field tricritical behavior. Experimental estimates of critical exponents suggest that these two types of phase transitions are observed in S=1 CsNiCl$_3$ and $S=1/2$ CsCoBr$_3$, respectively. The present results demonstrate that this difference can be explained by an unusual staggered magnetic field arising from quan…
The antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model is studied on a two-dimensional bipartite quasiperiodic lattice. The distribution of local staggered magnetic moments is determined on finite square approximants with up to 1393 sites, using the Stochastic Series Expansion Quantum Monte Carlo method. A non-trivial inhomogeneous ground state is found. For a given local coordination number, the values of the magnetic moments are spread out, reflecting the fact that no two sites in a quasicrystal are identical. A hierarchical structure in the values of the moments is observed which arises from the self-simil…
Neutron inelastic scattering measurements have been performed in order to investigate the magnetic excitations in the quasi-1D Ising-like antiferromagnet TlCoCl$_3$. We observed the magnetic excitation, which corresponds to the spin-wave excitation continuum corresponding to the domain-wall pair excitation in the 1D Ising-like antiferromagnet. According to the Ishimura-Shiba theory, we analyzed the observed spin-wave excitation, and the exchange constant $2J$ and the anistropy $ε$ were estimated as 14.7 meV and 0.14 in TlCoCl$_3$, respectively.
Using Raman scattering, the quasi-two dimensional organic superconductor k-(BEDT-TTF)2Cu[N(CN)2]Br (T_c=11.8 K) and the related antiferromagnet k-(BEDT-TTF)2Cu[N(CN)2]Cl are studied. Raman scattering provides unique spectroscopic information about magnetic degrees of freedom that has been otherwise unavailable on such organic conductors. Below T=200 K a broad band at about 500 cm-1 develops in both compounds. We identify this band with two-magnon excitation. The position and the temperature dependence of the spectral weight are similar in the antiferromagnet and in the metallic Fermi-liquid. W…
Ground state and low-energy excitations of the quasi-one-dimensional antiferromagnet CuSe$_2$O$_5$ were experimentally studied using bulk magnetization, neutron diffraction, muon spin relaxation and antiferromagnetic resonance measurements. Finite interchain interactions promote long-range antiferromagnetic order below $T_N=17$ K. The derived spin canted structure is characterized by the magnetic propagation vector $\mathbf{k}=(1, 0, 0)$ and the reduced magnetic moment $\bm{m}=[0.13(7), 0.50(1), 0.00(8)]μ_B$. The values of the magnetic anisotropies determined from the field and angular depende…
Polarized neutron inelastic scattering experiments have been carried out in the quasi-1D Ising-like antiferromagnet TlCoCl$_3$. We observed the longitudinal magnetic fluctuation $S_{zz} (Q, ω)$ for the spin-wave excitation continuum, which has not been observed in the unpolarized neutron inelastic scattering experiments of the quasi-1D Ising-like antiferromagnets CsCoCl$_3$ and TlCoCl$_3$ so far, together with the transverse magnetic fluctuation $S_{xx} (Q, ω)$. We compared both obtained intensities of $S_{xx} (Q, ω)$ and $S_{zz} (Q, ω)$ with the perturbation theory from the pure Ising limit b…
Comprehensive experimental studies by magnetic, thermal and neutron measurements have clarified that Rb4Mn(MoO4)3 is a model system of a quasi-2D triangular Heisenberg antiferromagnet with an easy-axis anisotropy, exhibiting successive transitions across an intermediate collinear phase. As a rare case for geometrically frustrated magnetism, quantitative agreement between experiment and theory is found for complete, anisotropic phase diagrams as well as magnetic properties.
Antiferromagnets are attractive platforms for the propagation of information via spin waves, offering advantages over ferromagnets in speed of response and immunity to external fields. A recent study of the quasi-2D antiferromagnet CrSBr reported that spin wavepackets propagate with group velocities that are orders of magnitude higher than expected from the magnon dispersion obtained by inelastic neutron scattering [1,2]. Here we show that the anomalous magnitude and anisotropy of the group velocity, v_g, are naturally explained by considering the long-range magnetic dipole-dipole interaction.…
We review the basic properties of the Haldane phase in spin-1 Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chains, including its persistence in quasi-one-dimensional geometries. Using large-scale numerical simulations, we map out the phase diagram for a realistic model applicable to experimental Haldane compounds. We also investigate the effect of different chain coupling geometries and confirm a general mean field universality of the critical coupling times the coordination number of the lattice. Inspired by the recent development of characterization of symmetry protected topological states, of which the Hal…
We consider frequency dependence of the neutron scattering amplitude from a two-dimensional quantum antiferromagnet. It is well known that the long range order disappears at any finite temperature and hence the elastic neutron scattering Bragg peak is transformed to the quasielastic neutron scattering spectrum ~dw/w. We show that the widely known formula for the spectrum of an isotropic antiferromagnet derived by Auerbach and Arovas should be supplemented by a logarithmic term that changes the integrated intensity by two times. A similar formula for an easy-plane magnet is very much different …
Elastic and inelastic neutron scattering were used to study the ordered phase of the quasi-one-dimensional spin-1/2 antiferromagnet ${\rm BaCu_{2}Si_{2}O_{7}}$. The previously proposed model for the low-temperature magnetic structure was confirmed. Spin wave dispersion along several reciprocal-space directions was measured and inter-chain, as well as in-chain exchange constants were determined. A small gap in the spin wave spectrum was observed and attributed to magnetic anisotropy effects. The results are discussed in comparison with existing theories for weakly-coupled quantum spin chain ant…
The new antiferromagnetic (AF) compound BaCu_2Si_2O_7 is studied by magnetic susceptibility and neutron scattering techniques. The observed behavior is dominated by the presence of loosely coupled S=1/2 chains with the intrachain AF exchange constant J = 24.1 meV. Long-range Neel ordering is observed below Tn = 9.2 K. The results are discussed within the framework of the Mean Field-RPA model for weakly interacting quantum spin chains.
Quasiperiodic structures possess long range positional order, but are freed of constraints imposed by translational invariance. For spins interacting via Heisenberg couplings, one may expect therefore to find novel magnetic configurations in such structures. We have studied magnetic properties for simple two dimensional models, as a first step towards understanding experimentally studied magnetic quasicrystals such as the Zn-Mg-R(rare earth) compounds. We analyse properties of the antiferromagnetic ground state and magnon excitation modes for bipartite tilings such as the octagonal and Penrose…
The Néel temperature, $T_{\rm N}$, of quasi-one- and quasi-two-dimensional antiferromagnetic Heisenberg models on a cubic lattice is calculated by Monte Carlo simulations as a function of inter-chain (inter-layer) to intra-chain (intra-layer) coupling $J'/J$ down to $J'/J\simeq 10^{-3}$. We find that $T_{\rm N}$ obeys a modified random-phase approximation-like relation for small $J'/J$ with an effective universal renormalized coordination number, independent of the size of the spin. Empirical formulae describing $T_{\rm N}$ for a wide range of $J'$ and useful for the analysis of experimental m…
Weak ferromagnetism of quasi-one-dimensional S = 1/2 antiferromagnet BaCu$_2$Ge$_2$O$_7$ is studied by the magnetization measurement. The spontaneous magnetization appears along the b axis. The local symmetry between the in-chain nearest neighbor spins allows the presence of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, and the only possible spatial configuration of the weak ferromagnetic moment per spin determines the sign of the inter-chain interaction. A weak $a$-axis magnetic field can change the direction of the magnetization to the $a$-axis direction, which shows that the spin chain forms a weakly …
In a recent publication [M. B. Stone et al., New Journal of Physics 9, 31 (2007)] a "Renormalized Classical 2D" (RC) phase has been reported in a quasi-two-dimensional quantum antiferromagnet PHCC. Its key signature is a sharp cusp-like feature in the magnetic susceptibility which appears below the critical field of magnetic ordering indicated by specific heat anomaly and emergence of a Bragg peak. Here we present experimental data which shows that regardless of experimental geometry, the specific heat and susceptibility anomalies in PHCC both coincide with the onset of true long range order. …
The magnetic structure of the spin-chain antiferromagnet SrCo2V2O8 is determined by single-crystal neutron diffraction experiment. The system undergoes magnetic long range order below T_N = 4.96 K. The moment of 2.16μ_B per Co at 1.6 K in the screw chain running along the c axis alternates in the c-axis. The moments of neighboring screw chains are arranged antiferromagnetically along one in-plane axis and ferromagnetically along the other in-plane axis. This magnetic configuration breaks the 4-fold symmetry of the tetragonal crystal structure and leads to two equally populated magnetic twins w…
We study the Neel temperature of quasi one-dimensional S=1/2 antiferromagnets containing non-magnetic impurities. We first consider the temperature dependence of the staggered susceptibility of finite chains with open boundary conditions, which shows an interesting difference for even and odd length chains. We then use a mean field theory treatment to incorporate the three dimensional inter-chain couplings. The resulting Neel temperature shows a pronounced drop as a function of doping by up to a factor of 5.
We have investigated the magnetic and dielectric properties of Ca$_2$CoSi$_2$O$_7$ crystal. The dielectricity and magnetism of Ca$_2$CoSi$_2$O$_7$ are strongly coupled below a canted antiferromagnetic transition temperature ($T_{\rm N}$): Magnetic fields induce electric polarization below $T_{\rm N}$. Interestingly, the magnetic-field-induced electric polarization is detected even without poling electric fields. Below $T_{\rm N}$, a canted antiferromagnetic-paramagnetic transition is induced by magnetic fields. The large magnetocapacitance is observed around $T_{\rm N}$. The origin of the larg…
We study the ground-state phase transitions of quasi-one-dimensional quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnets by the quantum Monte Carlo method with the continuous-time loop algorithm and finite-size scaling. For a model which consists of S=1 chains with bond alternation coupled on a square lattice, we determine the ground state phase diagram and the universality class of the quantum phase transitions.
We report muon spin rotation measurements of the local magnetic susceptibility around a positive muon in the paramagnetic state of the quasi one-dimensional spin 1/2 antiferromagnet dichlorobis (pyridine) copper (II). Signals from three distinct sites are resolved and have a temperature dependent frequency shift which is significantly different than the magnetic susceptibility. This difference is attributed to a muon induced perturbation of the spin 1/2 chain. The obtained frequency shifts are compared with Transfer Matrix DMRG numerical simulations.
Ultrafast time-resolved photoinduced reflectivity is measured for the itinerant antiferromagnet UNiGa$_{5}$ ($T_{N} \approx$85 K) from room temperature to 10 K. The relaxation time $τ$ shows a sharp increase at $T_{N}$ consistent with the opening of a spin gap. In addition, the temperature dependence of $τ$ below $T_{N}$ is consistent with the opening of a spin gap leading to a quasiparticle recombination bottleneck as revealed by the Rothwarf-Taylor model. This contrasts with canonical heavy fermions such as CeCoIn$_{5}$ where the recombination bottleneck arises from the hybridization gap.
Here we report on the formation of two and three magnon bound states in the quasi-one-dimensional antiferromagnet $α$-NaMnO$_2$, where the single-ion, uniaxial anisotropy inherent to the Mn$^{3+}$ ions in this material provides a binding mechanism capable of stabilizing higher order magnon bound states. While such states have long remained elusive in studies of antiferromagnetic chains, neutron scattering data presented here demonstrate that higher order $n>2$ composite magnons exist, and, specifically, that a weak three-magnon bound state is detected below the antiferromagnetic ordering trans…
Magnetic correlations of two iso-structural quasi-one-dimensional (1D) antiferromagnetic spin-chain compounds Sr$M_2$V$_2$O$_8$ ($M$ = Co, Mn) have been investigated by magnetization and powder neutron diffraction. Two different collinear antiferromagnetic (AFM) structures, characterized by the propagation vectors, $k$ = (0 0 1) and $k$ = (0 0 0), have been found below $\sim$ 5.2 K and $\sim$ 42.2 K for the Co- and Mn-compounds, respectively. For the Mn-compound, AFM chains (along the $c$ axis) order ferromagnetically within the $ab$ plane, whereas, for the Co-compound, AFM chains order ferro-…
For the weakly coupled S=1 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chains on a simple cubic lattice, the effects of magnetic impurities are investigated by the quantum Monte Carlo method with the continuous-time loop algorithm. The transition temperatures of the impurity-induced phase transitions for magnetic impurities with S=1/2, 3/2, and 2 are determined and compared with the transition temperature induced by the non-magnetic impurities. Implications on the experimental results are discussed.
The magnetic structure of the double perovskite compound Sr$_2$CuTeO$_6$ was determined from neutron powder diffraction data. This material is magnetically described as an $S\,{=}\,1/2$ quasi-two-dimensional square-lattice Heisenberg model with antiferromagnetic nearest-neighbor and next-nearest-neighbor interactions. Sr$_2$CuTeO$_6$ undergoes a magnetic phase transition at $T_{\rm N}\,{\simeq}\,29\,$ K. The spin structure below $T_{\rm N}$ is Néel antiferromagnetic on the square lattice, which means that the nearest-neighbor interaction ($J_1$) is stronger than the next-nearest-neighbor inter…
Although the isotope effect in superconducting materials is well-documented, changes in the magnetic properties of antiferromagnets due to isotopic substitution are seldom discussed and remain poorly understood. This is perhaps surprising given the possible link between the quasi-two-dimensional (Q2D) antiferromagnetic and superconducting phases of the layered cuprates. Here we report the experimental observation of shifts in the Néel temperature and critical magnetic fields ($ΔT_{\rm N}/T_{\rm N}\approx 4%$; $ΔB_{\rm c}/B_{\rm c}\approx 4%$) in a Q2D organic molecular antiferromagnets on subs…
We study high-field magnon dynamics and examine the dynamical structure factor in the quasi-2D tetragonal Heisenberg antiferromagnet with interlayer coupling corresponding to realistic materials. Within spin-wave theory, we show that a non-zero interlayer coupling mitigates singular corrections to the excitation spectrum occurring in the high-field regime that would otherwise require a self-consistent approach beyond the 1/S approximation. For the fields between the threshold for decays and saturation field we observe widening of the two-magnon sidebands with significant shifting of the spectr…
We have performed a symmetry analysis of the properties of the recently discovered quasi-one-dimensional compound BaCu_2Si_2O_7. The existence of the unusual spin-reorientation transitions is explained as an effect of the unusually strong relativistic interactions. The possible connection between the magnitude of the relativistic interactions and the low-dimensional structure of the BaCu_2Si_2O_7 is discussed. The structure of the magnetic phases is determined.
Combining inelastic neutron scattering and numerical simulations, we study the quasi-one dimensional Ising anisotropic quantum antiferromagnet \bacovo\ in a longitudinal magnetic field. This material shows a quantum phase transition from a Néel ordered phase at zero field to a longitudinal incommensurate spin density wave at a critical magnetic field of 3.8 T. Concomitantly the excitation gap almost closes and a fundamental reconfiguration of the spin dynamics occurs. These experimental results are well described by the universal Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid theory developed for interacting spinl…
Using electron-spin-resonance (ESR) technique we investigate the magnetic structure of CuCrO2, quasi-two-dimensional antiferromagnet with weakly distorted triangular lattice. Resonance frequencies and the excitation conditions in CuCrO2 at low temperatures are well described in the frame of cycloidal spin structure, defined by two susceptibilities parallel and perpendicular to the spin plane and by a biaxial crystal-field anisotropy. In agreement with the calculations, the character of the eigenmodes changes drastically at the spin-flop transition. The splitting of the observed modes can be we…
In a recent comment by A.A. Zvyagin to our Letter [Phys. Rev. Lett. 89, 47202 (2002)] it was pointed out that the bosonization treatment of the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain is only valid in the low temperature and long length limit. We support this statement and quantify the limits of validity by explicitly showing the crossover to the high temperature and/or short length limit using a combination of bosonization formulas and numerical results.
The phase diagram of the quasi two-dimensional antiferromagnet BaNi$_{2}$V$_{2}$O$_{8}$ is studied by specific heat, thermal expansion, magnetostriction, and magnetization for magnetic fields applied perpendicular to $\mathbf{c}$. At $μ_0H^{*}\simeq1.5$ T, a crossover to a high-field state, where $T_N(H)$ increases linearly, arises from a competition of intrinsic and field-induced in-plane anisotropies. The pressure dependences of $T_N$ and $H^{*}$ are interpreted using the picture of a pressure-induced in-plane anisotropy. Even at zero field and ambient pressure, in-plane anisotropy cannot be…
Topological properties of physical systems are attracting tremendous interest. Recently, magnetic solid state compounds with and without magnetic order have become a focus. We show that ${\text{BiCu}}_{2}{\text{PO}}_{6}$ is the first gapful quantum antiferromagnet with a finite Zak phase, which characterises one-dimensional systems, and only the second with topological non-trivial triplon excitations. Surprisingly, in spite of the bulk-boundary correspondence no localised edge mode occurs. This unexpected behaviour is explained by the distinction between direct and indirect gaps among the trip…
We study the dynamical response of frustrated, quasi-one-dimensional spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnets at finite temperatures. We allow for the presence of a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. We concentrate on a model of weakly coupled planes of anisotropic triangular lattices. Combining exact results for the dynamical response of one dimensional Heisenberg chains with a Random Phase Approximation (RPA) in the frustrated interchain couplings, we calculate the dynamical susceptibility in the disordered phase. We investigate the instability of the disordered phase to the formation of collect…
Two-dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnets play a central role in quantum magnetism, yet the nature of dynamic correlations in these systems at finite temperature has remained poorly understood for decades. We solve this long-standing problem by using a novel quantum-classical duality to calculate the dynamic structure factor analytically and, paradoxically, find a broad frequency spectrum despite the very long quasiparticle lifetime. The solution reveals new multi-scale physics whereby an external probe creates a classical radiation field containing infinitely-many quanta. Crucially, it is t…
The title compound belongs to a wide group of quasi-one-dimensional (Q1D) antiferromagnets (AF) and its Co2+ ions form Q1D screw-chains along the c-axis. We here present the first investigation of the microscopic magnetic nature of a single crystalline BaCo2V2O8 sample using μ+SR. Our data reveal the presence of several clear muon frequencies below TN indicating the onset of a long-range order. Above 5 K, the μ+SR spectra is well fitted to a simple power-exponential relaxing function. The temperature dependence of the relaxation-rate (λ) as well as the power (n) display a clear anomaly around …
For a class of quasi-one-dimensional clusters, by using exact diagonalization, we study the effect of side spins on the spin-spin correlations on chain. Our calculations show that the side spins added in the same sublattice can effectively strengthen the spin-spin correlations in large distance region and make the change tend to flat. It is exactly proved that periodically adding side spins can set up magnetic long-range orders in the ground state. Also we investigate the effect of the density of side spins on correlation strength. The case that two sublattices have different localized spins i…
By extending our recently proposed magnon-density-waves to low dimensions, we investigate, using a microscopic many-body approach, the longitudinal excitations of the quasi-one-dimensional (quasi-1d) and quasi-2d Heisenberg antiferromagnetic systems on a bipartite lattice with a general spin quantum number. We obtain the full energy spectrum of the longitudinal mode as a function of the coupling constants in the original lattice Hamiltonian and find that it always has a non-zero energy gap if the ground state has a long-range order and becomes gapless for the pure isotropic 1d model. The numer…
We investigate the excited states of the quasi-one-dimensional quantum antiferromagnets on hexagonal lattices, including the longitudinal modes based on the magnon-density waves. A model Hamiltonian with a uniaxial single-ion anisotropy is first studied by a spin-wave theory based on the one-boson method; the ground state thus obtained is employed for the study of the longitudinal modes. The full energy spectra of both the transverse modes (i.e., magnons) and the longitudinal modes are obtained as functions of the nearest-neighbor coupling and the anisotropy constants. We have found two longit…
From neutron diffraction measurements on a quasi-1D Ising-like Co$^{\rm 2+}$ spin compound BaCo$_{\rm 2}$V$_{\rm 2}$O$_{\rm 8}$, we observed an appearance of a novel type of incommensurate ordering in magnetic fields. This ordering is essentially different from the N{\' e}el-type ordering, which is expected for the classical system, and is caused by quantum fluctuation inherent in the quantum spin chain. A Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (TLL) nature characteristic of the gapless quantum 1D system is responsible for the realization of the incommensurate ordering.
We study antiferromagnetic, $S=1/2$ Heisenberg models with nearest and second neighbor interactions on the one-fifth depleted square lattice which describes the spin degrees of freedom in the spin-gap system CaV$_4$O$_9$. The meta-plaquette expansion for the triplet excitation spectrum is extended to fifth order, and the results are compared with experimental data on CaV$_4$O$_9$. We attempt to locate the phase boundary between magnetically ordered and gapped phases.
We present a careful analysis of the temperature dependence of the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_1$ in gapped quasi-1D Heisenberg antiferromagnets. It is found that in order to estimate the value of the gap correctly from $1/T_1$ the peculiar features of the dispersion curve for the triplet excitations must be taken into account. The temperature dependence of $1/T_1$ due to two-magnon processes, is reported for different values of the ratio $r=J_{\perp}/J_{\parallel}$ between the superexchange constants in a 2-leg-ladder. As an illustrative example we compare our results to the exp…
The large-N expansion of the quasi-two-dimensional quantum nonlinear $σ$ model (QNLSM) is used in order to establish experimentally applicable universal scaling relations for the quasi-two-dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnet. We show that, at $N=\infty$, the renormalized coordination number introduced by Yasuda \textit{et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{94}, 217201 (2005), is a universal number in the limit of $J'/J\to 0$. Moreover, similar scaling relations proposed by Hastings and Mudry, Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{96}, 027215 (2006), are derived at $N=\infty$ for the three-dimensional static…
We study the effects of quantum fluctuations and the excitation spectrum for the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on a two-dimensional quasicrystal, by numerically solving linear spin-wave theory on finite approximants of the octagonal tiling. Previous quantum Monte Carlo results for the distribution of local staggered magnetic moments and the static spin structure factor are reproduced well within this approximate scheme. Furthermore, the magnetic excitation spectrum consists of magnon-like low-energy modes, as well as dispersionless high-energy states of multifractal nature. The dynamical …
We develop a finite-temperature perturbation theory for quasi-one-dimensional quantum spin systems, in the manner suggested by H.J. Schulz (1996) and use this formalism to study their dynamical response. The corrections to the random-phase approximation formula for the dynamical magnetic susceptibility obtained with this method involve multi-point correlation functions of the one-dimensional theory on which the random-phase approximation expansion is built. This ``anisotropic'' perturbation theory takes the form of a systematic high-temperature expansion. This formalism is first applied to the…
