In the spacetime of a $d$-dimensional static tense brane black hole we elaborate the mechanism by which massive scalar fields decay. The metric of a six-dimensional black hole pierced by a topological defect is especially interesting. It corresponds to a black hole residing on a tensional 3-brane embedded in a six-dimensional spacetime, and this solution has gained importance due to the planned accelerator experiments. It happened that the intermediate asymptotic behaviour of the fields in question was determined by an oscillatory inverse power-law. We confirm our investigations by numerical calculations for five- and six-dimensional cases. It turned out that the greater the brane tension is, the faster massive scalar fields decay in the considered spacetimes.
By finding the spinor eigenvalues for a single deficit angle (d-2)-sphere, we derive the radial potential for fermions on a d-dimensional black hole background that is embedded on a codimension two brane with conical singularity, where the deficit angle is related to the brane tension. From this we obtain the quasi-normal mode spectrum for bulk fermions on such a background. As a byproduct of our method, this also gives a rigorous proof for integer spin fields on the deficit 2-sphere.
Using the WKBJ approximation we obtain numerical plots of the power emission spectrum for the evaporation of massless bulk Dirac fermions from six dimensional black holes off a tense 3-brane with codimension two. We also present the multiplicity factors for eigenvalues of the deficit four sphere and show that these reduce to the usual case in the tenseless limit.
We calculate analytically grey-body factors of Schwarzschild black-holes localized on a 3-brane of finite tension and codimension 2. We obtain explicit expressions for various types of particles emitted in the bulk as well as on the brane in both the low and high frequency regimes. In the latter case, we obtain expressions which are valid for arbitrary number of extra dimensions if the brane tension vanishes.
We calculate the gray-body factors for scalar, vector and graviton fields in the background of an exact black hole localized on a tensional 3-brane in a world with two large extra dimensions. Finite brane tension modifies the standard results for the case with of a black hole on a brane with negligible tension. For a black hole of a fixed mass, the power carried away into the bulk diminishes as the tension increases, because the effective Planck constant, and therefore entropy of a fixed mass black hole, increase. In this limit, the semiclassical description of black hole decay becomes more re…
We study the emission of scalar fields into the bulk from a six-dimensional rotating black hole pierced by a 3-brane. We determine the angular eigenvalues in the presence of finite brane tension by using the continued fraction method. The radial equation is integrated numerically, giving the absorption probability (graybody factor) in a wider frequency range than in the preexisting literature. We then compute the power and angular momentum emission spectra for different values of the rotation parameter and brane tension, and compare their relative behavior in detail. As is expected from the ea…
We elaborate the signature of the extra dimensions and brane tension in the process of phantom and massive scalar emission in the spacetime of (4+n)-dimensional tense brane black hole. Absorption cross section, luminosity of Hawking radiation and cross section in the low-energy approximation were found. We envisage that parameter connected with the existence of a brane imprints its role in the Hawking radiation of the considered fields.
In the article it is explicitly found new possible brane model solutions for the 5D spacetime physical set-up. These solutions require a ghost-like bulk scalar-field and the 3-brane at the origin of extra coordinate.
We show that for non-conformally flat bulk spacetime, there exist no bound modes for zero mass graviton on the 3-brane. The brane world model is therefore unstable for the bulk spacetime being different from the conformally flat anti - de Sitter space.
Anisotropic generalization of Randall and Sundrum brane-world model is considered. A new class of exact solutions for brane and bulk geometry is found; it is related to anisotropic Kasner solution. In view of this, the old question of isotropy of initial conditions in cosmology rises once again in the brane-world context.
In this paper, we discuss the time-dependent brane solutions in higher-dimensional supergravity theories. We particularly focus on the dynamical extensions of the intersecting brane solutions involving three branes. We also show that in the near-horizon limits, where the time dependence is negligible, these branes describe warped anti-de Sitter spacetimes as in the corresponding static solutions. We finally examine the lower-dimensional cosmological dynamics obtained after compactifications of the higher-dimensional solutions and show the solutions we have found give the four-dimensional unive…
We consider black-brane spacetimes that have at least one spatial translation Killing field that is tangent to the brane. A new parameter, the tension of a spacetime, is defined. The tension parameter is associated with spatial translations in much the same way that the ADM mass is associated with the time translation Killing field. In this work, we explore the implications of the spatial translation symmetry for small perturbations around a background black brane. For static charged black branes we derive a law which relates the tension perturbation to the surface gravity times the change in …
In this paper we apply the five-dimensional $f(T)$ gravity with $f(T)=T+k T^n$ to brane scenario to explore the solutions under a given warp factor, and we find that the analytic domain wall solution will be a double-kink solution when the geometric effect of spacetime torsion is strongly enhanced. We also investigate the localization of fermion fields on the split branes corresponding to the double-kink solution.
In this paper, we investigate a $6$-dimensional smooth thick braneworld model which contains a compact extra dimension and an infinite large one. The braneworld is generated by a real scalar field with a $ϕ^6$ potential and the bulk is asymptotically $\text{AdS}_6$ spacetime. The geometry achieves the localization of the free $U(1)$ gauge field, which is a problem in the $5$-dimensional Randall-Sundrum-like models. In addition, we analyze the stability of the braneworld system and the localization of gravitons.
We consider a thick brane model supported by two interacting scalar fields in 7D and 8D general relativity. Using the special type of a potential energy, we obtain numerically the regular asymptotically flat vacuum solutions. A possibility of obtaining the similar solutions for an arbitrary number of the extra spatial dimensions is estimated.
We demonstrate complete integrability of the Nambu-Goto equations for a stationary string in the general Kerr-NUT-(A)dS spacetime describing the higher-dimensional rotating black hole. The stationary string in D dimensions is generated by a 1-parameter family of Killing trajectories and the problem of finding a string configuration reduces to a problem of finding a geodesic line in an effective (D-1)-dimensional space. Resulting integrability of this geodesic problem is connected with the existence of hidden symmetries which are inherited from the black hole background. In a spacetime with p m…
We construct analytic solutions describing black holes and black branes in asymptotically Lifshitz spacetimes with arbitrary dynamical exponent z and for arbitrary number of dimensions. The model considered consists of Einstein gravity with negative cosmological constant, a scalar, and N U(1) gauge fields with dilatonic-like couplings. We study the phase diagrams and thermodynamic instabilities of the solution, and find qualitative differences between the cases with 1<= z<2, z=2 and z>2.
In this work, we present an extensive dynamical analysis of the null geodesics in the spacetimes proposed by Casadio, Fabbri, and Mazzacurati (CFM), which model black holes and wormholes in a Randall-Sundrum brane. Geodesic stability is evaluated by Lyapunov and Jacobi criteria, with coinciding results. Semistable photon spheres are found in the geometries of interest. Bifurcations associated with the dynamical system are also investigated, characterizing a degenerated Bogdanov-Takens bifurcation. Our results suggest deep connections between the geometric characteristics of the CFM spacetimes …
Horava-Witten spacetimes necessarily include two branes of opposite tension. If these branes are BPS we are led to a puzzle: a negative tension brane should be unstable as it can loose energy by expanding, whereas a BPS brane should be stable as it resides at a minimum of the energy. We provide a detailed analysis of the energy of such braneworld spacetimes in 5 dimensions. This allows us to show by a non-perturbative positive energy theorem that Horava-Witten spacetimes are stable, essentially because the dynamics of the branes is entirely accounted for by the behaviour of the bulk fields. We…
We investigate black brane solutions in asymptotically Lifshitz spacetime in 3+1-dimensional Horndeski gravity, which admit a critical exponent fixed at $z=1/2$. The cosmological constant depends on $z$ as $Λ=-(1+2z)/L^{2}$. We compute the shear viscosity in the 2+1-dimensional dual boundary field theory via holographic correspondence. We investigate the violation of the bound for viscosity to entropy density ratio of $η/s\geq1/(4π)$ at $z=1/2$.
We review the manifestation of the Brout-Englert-Higgs effect in general relativity interacting with point-like and extended objects (p-branes including string for p=1 and membrane for p=2), which manifests itself in the appearance of the brane source in the Einstein equation while the graviton remains massless (hep-th/0112207, hep-th/0507197 and refs therein), and discuss briefly its relation and differences with the model for massive spin 2 field proposed recently by G. t'Hooft in [arXiv:0708.3184 [hep-th]].
In this paper, we give a complete classification of vacuum branes, i.e., everywhere umbilical time-like hypersurfaces whose extrinsic curvature is a constant multiple of the induced metric, K_mn=k g_mn, in D-dimensional static spacetimes with spatial symmetry G(D-2,K), where G(n,K) is the isometry group of an n-dimensional space with constant sectional curvature K. D>=4 is assumed. It is shown that all possible configurations of a brane are invariant under an isometry subgroup G(D-3,K') for some K'>= K. In particular, configurations of a brane with non-zero k are always G(D-2,K) invariant, exc…
We define the local acceleration and jerk of a relativistic brane in an ambient spacetime, and construct from them a dimensionless parameter lambda that must be small for an interpretation of brane acceleration as local Unruh temperature. As examples, we discuss (i) open rotating branes, for which lambda>1 (ii) closed spherical branes expanding in Minkowski spacetime, for which lambda=0 when the worldvolume is either an Einstein static universe or de Sitter space, in which case the brane temperature equals the Gibbons-Hawking temperature, (iii) closed spherical branes in anti-de Sitter spaceti…
We discuss the comsological evolution of a brane in the $D(>6)$-dimensional black brane spacetime in the context of the Kaluza-Klein (KK) braneworld scheme, i.e., to consider KK compactification on the brane. The bulk spacetime is composed of two copies of a patch of $D$-dimensional black three-brane solution. The near-horizon geometry is given by $AdS_{5}\times S^{(D-5)}$ while in the asymptotic infinity the spacetime approaches $D$-dimensional Minkowski. We consider the brane motion from the near-horizon region toward the spatial infinity, which induces cosmology on the brane. As is expected…
Spherically symmetric, static on-brane geometries in the Kanno-Soda (KS) effective scalar-tensor theory of on-brane gravity are discussed. In order to avoid brane collisions and/or an infinite inter-brane distance, at finite values of the brane coordinates, it is necessary that the radion scalar be everywhere finite and non-zero. This requirement constrains the viability of the standard, well-known solutions in General Relativity (GR), in the context of the KS effective theory. The radion for the Schwarzschild solution does not satisfy the above requirement. For the Reissner--Nordstrom (RN) na…
We show that D=4 Schwarzschild black holes can arise from a doublet of Euclidean D3-antiD3 pairs embedded in D=10 Lorentzian spacetime. By starting from a D=10 type IIB supergravity description for the D3-antiD3 pairs and wrapping one of them over an external 2-sphere, we derive all vacuum solutions compatible with the symmetry of the problem. Analysing under what condition a Euclidean brane configuration embedded in a Lorentzian spacetime can lead to a time-independent spacetime, enables us to single out the embedded D=4 Schwarzschild spacetime as the unique solution generated by the D3-antiD…
Starting from a completely general standpoint, we find the most general brane-Universe solutions for a three-brane in a five dimensional spacetime. The brane can border regions of spacetime with or without a cosmological constant. Making no assumptions other than the usual cosmological symmetries of the metric, we prove that the equations of motion form an integrable system, and find the exact solution. The cosmology is indeed a boundary of a (class II) Schwarzschild-AdS spacetime, or a Minkowski (class I) spacetime. We analyse the various cosmological trajectories focusing particularly on tho…
In the present paper, we give some theorems representing ridigity of a vacuum brane in static bulk spacetimes. As an application, we show that a static bulk spacetime with dimension D>3 and spatial symmetry IO(D-2), O(D-1) or O_+(D-2,1) does not allow a vacuum brane with a black hole on it. We also show that if a static bulk spacetime with dimension D>4 satsifying the vacuum Einstein equations can be foliated by a continuous family of vacuum branes with asymptotically constant curvature, it is a black string solution.
We construct quantum effective action in spacetime with branes/boundaries. This construction is based on the reduction of the underlying Neumann type boundary value problem for the propagator of the theory to that of the much more manageable Dirichlet problem. In its turn, this reduction follows from the recently suggested Neumann-Dirichlet duality which we extend beyond the tree level approximation. In the one-loop approximation this duality suggests that the functional determinant of the differential operator subject to Neumann boundary conditions in the bulk factorizes into the product of i…
We use the conservation law of the stress-energy and spin tensors to study the motion of massive brane-like objects in Riemann-Cartan geometry. The world-sheet equations and boundary conditions are obtained in a manifestly covariant form. In the particle case, the resultant world-line equations turn out to exhibit a novel spin-curvature coupling. In particular, the spin of a zero-size particle does not couple to the background curvature. In the string case, the world-sheet dynamics is studied for some special choices of spin and torsion. As a result, the known coupling to the Kalb-Ramond antis…
In this paper, we adopt the method of quantum fields in curved spacetime to quantize a free scalar matter field in the braneworld background whose warped factor is of the form that could generate Pöschl-Teller potential. Then we consider the interaction between the scalar field $ϕ(x)$ and a classical scalar source $ρ(x)$ with the form $\mathcal{H}_I=\sqrt{-g}\tilde{g}ρ(x)ϕ(x)$. The corresponding S-matrix is given and the number of particles generated by the source is obtained. Furthermore, we get the {particle numbers} in the cases that only ground state mode of the field could be detected and…
It is shown that a Lagrangian, describing the interaction of the gravitation field with the dilaton and the antisymmetric tensor in arbitrary dimension spacetime, admits an isotropic p-brane solution consisting of three blocks. Relations with known p-brane solutions are discussed. In particular, in ten-dimensional spacetime the three-block p-brane solution is reduced to the known solution, which recently has been used in the D-brane derivation of the black hole entropy.
No, it cannot in the following sense if a self-gravitating vacuum brane is concerned. Once we write down the full set of linear perturbation equations of the system containing a self-gravitating brane, we will see that such a brane does not have its own dynamical degrees of freedom independent of those of gravitational waves which propagate in the surrounding spacetime. This statement seems to contradict with our intuition that a brane fluctuates freely on a given background spacetime in the lowest order approximation. Based on this intuition, we usually think that the dynamics of a brane can …
String tension fundamentally determines the properties of strings; yet its value is often assigned arbitrarily, creating a fine-tuning problem. We describe a mechanism for dynamically generating string tension in a flat or almost flat spacetime, using the modified measures formalism, which in turn naturally generates a new type of stringy brane-world scenario. Such a scenario allows strings to achieve near infinite tension confining the strings to two very close expanding surfaces, but the infinite tensions also threatens to distort the near-flat embedding spacetime through large back reaction…
Effective gravitational field equations on a brane have been derived, when the bulk spacetime is endowed with the second rank antisymmetric Kalb-Ramond field. Since both the graviton and the Kalb-Ramond field are closed string excitations, they can propagate in the bulk. After deriving the effective gravitational field equations on the brane, we solve them for a static spherically symmetric solution. It turns out that the solution so obtained represents a black hole or naked singularity depending on the parameter space of the model. The stability of this model is also discussed. Cosmological s…
We point out that the effective theory for the Randall-Sundrum braneworld models with bulk fields contains the baryon number violation process depending on the spacetime dynamics. Combining to the curvature-current interaction, the net baryon number observed today may be explained. The resultant baryon to entropy ratio is determined by the ratio of the Planck scales in four dimensional and five dimensional spacetime except for the parameter for CP violation.
Superrotations of asymptotically flat spacetimes in four dimensions can be interpreted in terms of including cosmic strings within the phase space of allowed solutions. In this paper we explore the implications of the inclusion of cosmic branes on the asymptotic structure of vacuum spacetimes in dimension d > 4. We first show that only cosmic (d-3)-branes are Riemann flat in the neighbourhood of the brane, and therefore only branes of such dimension passing through the celestial sphere can respect asymptotic local flatness. We derive the asymptotically locally flat boundary conditions associat…
We study electromagnetically charged dilatonic black brane solutions in arbitrary dimensions with flat transverse spaces, that are asymptotically AdS. This class of solutions includes spacetimes which possess a bulk region where the metric is approximately invariant under Lifshitz scalings. Given fixed asymptotic boundary conditions, we analyze how the behavior of the bulk up to the horizon varies with the charges and derive the extremality conditions for these spacetimes.
We deal with scalar field coupled to gravity in five dimensions in warped geometry. We investigate models described by potentials that drive the system to support thick brane solutions that engender internal structure. We find analytical expressions for the brane solutions, and we show that they are all linearly stable.
The effective gravitational field equations on and off a 3-brane world possessing a Z_{2} mirror symmetry and embedded in a five-dimensional bulk spacetime with cosmological constant were derived by Shiromizu, Maeda and Sasaki (SMS) in the framework of the Gauss-Codazzi projective approach with the subsequent specialization to the Gaussian normal coordinates in the neighborhood of the brane. However, the Gaussian normal coordinates imply a very special slicing of spacetime and clearly, the consistent analysis of the brane dynamics would benefit from complete freedom in the slicing of spacetime…
We introduce a new kind of space-filling brane, which we term "G-brane" because its action is a descendant of the gravitational action. The G-brane may be thought of as the remanent of the gravitational field when the propagating gravitons are removed. The G-brane is different from the Dirac or Nambu space-filling branes. Its properties in any spacetime dimension D are exhibited. When the spacetime dimension D is greater than or equal to three, the G-brane does not possess propagating degrees of freedom, just as the Dirac or Nambu branes. For D=3 the G-brane yields a reformulation of gravitati…
We study a stationary "black" brane in M/superstring theory. Assuming BPS-type relations between the first-order derivatives of metric functions, we present general stationary black brane solutions with a traveling wave for the Einstein equations in $D$-dimensions. The solutions are given by a few independent harmonic equations (and plus the Poisson equation). General solutions are constructed by superposition of a complete set of those harmonic functions. Using the hyperspherical coordinate system, we explicitly give the solutions in 11-dimensional M theory for the case with M2-M5 intersectin…
Colliding branes without $Z_{2}$ symmetry and the formation of spacetime singularities in string theory are studied. After developing the general formulas to describe such events, we study a particular class of exact solutions first in the 5-dimensional effective theory, and then lift it to the 10-dimensional spacetime. In general, the 5-dimensional spacetime is singular, due to the mutual focus of the two colliding 3-branes. Non-singular cases also exist, but with the price that both of the colliding branes violate all the three energy conditions, weak, dominant, and strong. After lifted to 1…
We investigate the combined effects of a magnetic flux-carrying cosmic string and a brane on the fermionic condensate (FC) and on the vacuum expectation value (VEV) of the energy-momentum tensor for a massive charged fermionic field in background of 5-dimensional anti-de Sitter (AdS) spacetime. The brane is parallel to the AdS boundary and it divides the space into two regions with distinct properties of the fermionic vacuum. For two types of boundary conditions on the field operator and for the fields realizing two inequivalent representations of the Clifford algebra, the brane-induced contri…
We derive the low-energy effective theory of gravity for a generalized Randall-Sundrum scenario, allowing for a third self-gravitating brane to live in the 5D bulk spacetime. At zero order the 5D spacetime is composed of two slices of anti-de Sitter spacetime, each with a different curvature scale, and the 5D Weyl tensor vanishes. Two boundary branes are at the fixed points of the orbifold whereas the third brane is free to move in the bulk. At first order, the third brane breaks the otherwise continuous evolution of the projection of the Weyl tensor normal to the branes. We derive a junction …
A thick brane model with Gauss-Bonnet action in a homogeneous anisotropic $D=(4+1+d)$ spacetime is studied. By choosing a concrete metric ansatz, we show that this spacetime is stable against linear tensor perturbations under certain conditions. The graviton zero modes are also given. Besides, we examine a particular example in six-dimensional spacetime with a given warp factor. The coupled background scalar field and its potential are solved analytically. Furthermore, the effective potential of the Kaluza-Klein modes of the graviton is also discussed. We found that the effective potential can…
We study the relativistic dynamics of brane probes in singular warped spacetimes and establish limits for such analysis. The behavior of the semiclassical brane probe wave functions implies that unitarity boundary conditions can be imposed at the singularity.
We identify a time-dependent class of metrics with potential applications to cosmology, which emerge from negative-tension branes. The cosmology is based on a general class of solutions to Einstein-dilaton-Maxwell theory, presented in {hep-th/0106120}. We argue that solutions with hyperbolic or planar symmetry describe the gravitational interactions of a pair of negative-tension $q$-branes. These spacetimes are static near each brane, but become time-dependent and expanding at late epoch -- in some cases asymptotically approaching flat space. We interpret this expansion as being the spacetime'…
We construct a class of analytic solutions with two free parameters to the five-dimensional Einstein field equations, which represents the collision of two timelike 3-branes. We study the local and global properties of the spacetime, and find that spacelike singularities generically develop after the collision, due to the mutual focus of the two branes. Non-singular spacetime can be constructed only in the case where both of the two branes violate the energy conditions.
We present classical solutions of Dp-branes $(p \ge 5)$ in plane wave spacetime with nonconstant R-R 3-form flux. We also show the existence of a system of D3-branes in this background. We further analyze the supersymmetric properties of these branes by solving type II Killing spinor equations explicitly.
We study transverse asymptotically flat spacetimes without horizons that arise from brane matter sources. We assume that asymptotically there is a spatial translation Killing vector that is tangent to the brane. Such spacetimes are characterized by a tension, analogous to the ADM mass, which is a gravitational charge associated with the asymptotic spatial translation Killing vector. Using spinor techniques, we prove that the purely gravitational contribution to the spacetime tension is positive definite.
We find classical solutions of D-branes in pp-wave spacetime with nonconstant NS-NS flux. We also present Dp-Dp' bound state solutions in this background. We further analyze the supersymmetric properties of these brane solutions by solving the type IIB killing spinor equations explicitly.
We report a mathematical equivalence between certain models of universe relying on domain-walls and noncommutative geometries. It is shown that a two-brane world made of two domain-walls can be seen as a "noncommutative" two-sheeted spacetime under certain assumptions. This equivalence also implies a model-independent phenomenology which is presently studied. Matter swapping between the two branes (or sheets) is predicted through fermionic oscillations induced by magnetic vector potentials. This phenomenon, which might be experimentally studied, could reveal the existence of extra dimensions i…
We present two classes of brane solutions in pp-wave spacetime. The first class of branes with a rotation parameter are constructed in an exact string background with NS-NS and R-R flux. The spacetime supersymmetry is analyzed by solving the standard Killing spinor equations and is shown to preserve the same amount of supersymmetry as the case without the rotation. This class of branes do not admit regular horizon. The second class of brane solutions are constructed by applying a null Melvin twist to the brane solutions of flat spacetime supergravity. These solutions admit regular horizon. We …
We discuss properties of a 3-brane in an asymptotic 5-dimensional de-Sitter spacetime. It is found that a Minkowski solution can be obtained without fine-tuning. In the model, the tiny observed positive cosmological constant is interpreted as a curvature of 5-dimensional manifold, but the Minkowski spacetime, where we live, is a natural 3-brane perpendicular to the fifth coordinate axis.
Wightman function, the vacuum expectation values of the field square and the energy-momentum tensor are evaluated for a scalar field obeying the Robin boundary conditions on two spherical branes in (D+1)-dimensional Rindler-like spacetime $Ri\times S^{D-1}$, with a two-dimensional Rindler spacetime $Ri$. This spacetime approximates the near horizon geometry of (D+1)-dimensional black hole. By using the generalized Abel-Plana formula, the vacuum expectation values are presented as the sum of single brane and second brane induced parts. Various limiting cases are studied. The vacuum forces actin…
We discuss branes whose worldvolume dimension equals the target spacetime dimension, i.e. ``spacetime-filling branes''. In addition to the D9-branes, there are 9-branes in the NS-NS sectors of both the IIA and IIB strings. The worldvolume actions of these branes are constructed, via duality, from the known actions of branes with codimension larger than zero. Each of these types of branes is used in the construction of a string theory with sixteen supercharges by modding out a type II string by an appropriate discrete symmetry and adding 32 9-branes. These constructions are related by a web of …
