This paper considers the problem of transmitting the difference of two jointly Gaussian sources over a two-user additive Gaussian noise multiple access channel (MAC). The goal is to recover this difference within an average mean squared error distortion criterion. Each transmitter has access to only one of the two Gaussian sources and is limited by an average power constraint. In this work, a lattice coding scheme that achieves a distortion within a constant of a distortion lower bound is presented if the signal to noise ratio (SNR) is greater than a threshold. Further, uncoded transmission is shown to be worse in performance to lattice coding methods. An alternative lattice coding scheme is presented that can potentially improve on the performance of uncoded transmission.
A new coding technique, based on \textit{fixed block-length} codes, is proposed for the problem of communicating a pair of correlated sources over a $2-$user interference channel. Its performance is analyzed to derive a new set of sufficient conditions. The latter is proven to be strictly less binding than the current known best, which is due to Liu and Chen [Dec, 2011]. Our findings are inspired by Dueck's example [March, 1981].
We consider the two scenarios of communicating a pair $S_{1},S_{2}$ of correlated sources over multiple access (MAC) and interference channels (IC) respectively. We undertake a Shannon theoretic study and focus on achievability, i.e., characterizing sufficient conditions. In the absence of a Gaćs-Körner-Witsenhausen common part, the current known single-letter (S-L) coding schemes are constrained to the S-L long Markov Chain (LMC) $X_{1}-S_{1}-S_{2}-X_{2}$. Taking the lead of Dueck's example [Dueck, Mar 1981], we recognize that the latter constraint is debilitating, leading to sub-optimality o…
Communicating arbitrarily correlated sources over interference channels is considered in this paper. A sufficient condition is found for the lossless transmission of a pair of correlated sources over a discrete memoryless interference channel. With independent sources, the sufficient condition reduces to the Han-Kobayashi achievable rate region for the interference channel. For a special correlation structure (in the sense of Slepian-Wolf, 1973), the proposed region reduces to the known achievable region for interference channels with common information. A simple example is given to show that …
We consider the problem of communicating over a classical-quantum (CQ) multiple access channel with random classical states non-causally available at the transmitter, referred to as a QMSTx. QMSTx is a classical-quantum multiple access analogue of the channel considered by Gelfand and Pinsker in 1980. We undertake a Shannon-theoretic study and focus on the problem of characterizing inner bounds to the capacity region of a QMSTx. We propose a new coding scheme based on \textit{union coset codes} - codes possessing algebraic properties and derive a new inner bound that subsumes the inner based o…
Relay networks aid in increasing the rate of communication from source to destination. However, the capacity of even a three-terminal relay channel is an open problem. In this work, we propose a new lower bound for the capacity of the three-terminal relay channel with destination-to-source feedback in the presence of correlated noise. Our lower bound improves on the existing bounds in the literature. We then extend our lower bound to general relay network configurations using an arbitrary number of filter-and-forward relay nodes. Such network configurations are common in many multi-hop communi…
Suppose Alice and Bob receive strings of unbiased independent but noisy bits from some random source. They wish to use their respective strings to extract a common sequence of random bits with high probability but without communicating. How many such bits can they extract? The trivial strategy of outputting the first $k$ bits yields an agreement probability of $(1 - \eps)^k < 2^{-1.44k\eps}$, where $\eps$ is the amount of noise. We show that no strategy can achieve agreement probability better than $2^{-k\eps/(1 - \eps)}$. On the other hand, we show that when $k \geq 10 + 2 (1 - \eps) / \eps$,…
We study the problem of common randomness (CR) generation in the basic two-party communication setting in which the sender and the receiver aim to agree on a common random variable with high probability by observing independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) samples of correlated Gaussian sources and while communicating as little as possible over a noisy memoryless channel. We completely solve the problem by giving a single-letter characterization of the CR capacity for the proposed model and by providing a rigorous proof of it. Interestingly, we prove that the CR capacity is infinite wh…
This paper investigates a source coding problem in which two terminals communicating through a relay wish to estimate one another's source within some distortion constraint. The relay has access to side information that is correlated with the sources. Two different schemes based on the order of communication, \emph{distributed source coding/delivery} and \emph{two cascaded rounds}, are proposed and inner and outer bounds for the resulting rate-distortion regions are provided. Examples are provided to show that neither rate-distortion region includes the other one.
We consider the task of communicating a generic bivariate function of two classical sources over a Classical-Quantum Multiple Access Channel (CQ-MAC). The two sources are observed at the encoders of the CQ-MAC, and the decoder aims at reconstructing a bivariate function from the received quantum state. Inspired by the techniques developed for the analogous classical setting, and employing the technique of simultaneous (joint) decoding developed for the classical-quantum setting, we propose and analyze a coding scheme based on a fusion of algebraic structured and unstructured codes. This coding…
This paper investigates the joint source-channel coding problem of sending two correlated memoryless sources with common part over a memoryless multiple access channel (MAC). An inner bound and two outer bounds on the achievable distortion region are derived. In particular, they respectively recover the existing bounds for several special cases, such as communication without common part, lossless communication, and noiseless communication. When specialized to quadratic Gaussian communication case, transmitting Gaussian sources with Gaussian common part over Gaussian MAC, the inner bound and ou…
A new approach to joint source-channel coding is presented in the context of communicating correlated sources over multiple access channels. Similar to the separation architecture, the joint source-channel coding system architecture in this approach is modular, whereby the source encoding and channel decoding operations are decoupled. However, unlike the separation architecture, the same codeword is used for both source coding and channel coding, which allows the resulting hybrid coding scheme to achieve the performance of the best known joint source-channel coding schemes. Applications of the…
In this paper we introduce Neural Network Coding(NNC), a data-driven approach to joint source and network coding. In NNC, the encoders at each source and intermediate node, as well as the decoder at each destination node, are neural networks which are all trained jointly for the task of communicating correlated sources through a network of noisy point-to-point links. The NNC scheme is application-specific and makes use of a training set of data, instead of making assumptions on the source statistics. In addition, it can adapt to any arbitrary network topology and power constraint. We show empi…
Suppose Alice and Bob receive strings $X=(X_1,...,X_n)$ and $Y=(Y_1,...,Y_n)$ each uniformly random in $[s]^n$ but so that $X$ and $Y$ are correlated . For each symbol $i$, we have that $Y_i = X_i$ with probability $1-\eps$ and otherwise $Y_i$ is chosen independently and uniformly from $[s]$. Alice and Bob wish to use their respective strings to extract a uniformly chosen common sequence from $[s]^k$ but without communicating. How well can they do? The trivial strategy of outputting the first $k$ symbols yields an agreement probability of $(1 - \eps + \eps/s)^k$. In a recent work by Bogdanov a…
The problem of three-user Multiple-Access Channel (MAC) with correlated sources is investigated. An extension to the Cover-El Gamal-Salehi (CES) scheme is introduced. We use a combination of this scheme with linear codes and propose a new coding strategy. We derive new sufficient conditions to transmit correlated sources reliably. We consider an example of three-user MAC with binary inputs. Using this example, we show strict improvements over the CES scheme.
We study the problem of communicating a distributed correlated memoryless source over a memoryless network, from source nodes to destination nodes, under quadratic distortion constraints. We establish the following two complementary results: (a) for an arbitrary memoryless network, among all distributed memoryless sources of a given correlation, Gaussian sources are least compressible, that is, they admit the smallest set of achievable distortion tuples, and (b) for any memoryless source to be communicated over a memoryless additive-noise network, among all noise processes of a given correlati…
We consider the problem of communicating a general bivariate function of two classical sources observed at the encoders of a classical-quantum multiple access channel. Building on the techniques developed for the case of a classical channel, we propose and analyze a coding scheme based on coset codes. The proposed technique enables the decoder recover the desired function without recovering the sources themselves. We derive a new set of sufficient conditions that are weaker than the current known for identified examples. This work is based on a new ensemble of coset codes that are proven to ac…
Lossy coding of correlated sources over a multiple access channel (MAC) is studied. First, a joint source-channel coding scheme is presented when the decoder has correlated side information. Next, the optimality of separate source and channel coding, that emerges from the availability of a common observation at the encoders, or side information at the encoders and the decoder, is investigated. It is shown that separation is optimal when the encoders have access to a common observation whose lossless recovery is required at the decoder, and the two sources are independent conditioned on this co…
An energy harvesting (EH) transmitter communicating over a time-correlated wireless channel is considered. The transmitter is capable of sensing the current channel state, albeit at the cost of both energy and transmission time. The EH transmitter aims to maximize its long-term throughput by choosing one of the following actions: $i)$ defer its transmission to save energy for future use, $ii)$ transmit reliably at a low rate, $iii)$ transmit at a high rate, and $iv)$ sense the channel to reveal the channel state at a cost of energy and transmission time, and then decide to defer or to transmit…
In this work, we investigate the minimum energy of transmitting correlated sources over the Gaussian multiple-access channel (MAC). Compared to other works on joint source-channel coding, we consider the general scenario where the source and channel bandwidths are not naturally matched. In particular, we proposed the use of hybrid digital-analog coding over to improve the transmission energy efficiency. Different models of correlated sources are studied. We first consider lossless transmission of binary sources over the MAC. We then treat lossy transmission of Gaussian sources over the Gaussia…
We consider the problem of distributed joint source-channel coding of correlated Gaussian sources over a Gaussian Multiple Access Channel (GMAC). There may be side information at the decoder and/or at the encoders. First we specialize a general result (for transmission of correlated sources over a MAC with side information) to obtain sufficient conditions for reliable transmission over a Gaussian MAC. This system does not satisfy the source-channel separation. We study and compare three joint source-channel coding schemes available in literature. We show that each of these schemes is optimal u…
In this paper, we investigate the design of linear precoders for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) multiple access channels (MAC). We assume that statistical channel state information (CSI) is available at the transmitters and consider the problem under the practical finite alphabet input assumption. First, we derive an asymptotic (in the large-system limit) weighted sum rate (WSR) expression for the MIMO MAC with finite alphabet inputs and general jointly-correlated fading. Subsequently, we obtain necessary conditions for linear precoders maximizing the asymptotic WSR and propose an itera…
In this paper, we explore the information-theoretic optimality of treating interference as noise (TIN) in cellular networks. We focus on uplink scenarios modeled by the Gaussian interfering multiple access channel (IMAC), comprising $K$ mutually interfering multiple access channels (MACs), each formed by an arbitrary number of transmitters communicating independent messages to one receiver. We define TIN for this setting as a scheme in which each MAC (or cell) performs a power-controlled version of its capacity-achieving strategy, with Gaussian codebooks and successive decoding, while treating…
Heterogeneous networks are a flexible deployment model that rely on low power nodes to improve the user broadband experience in a cost effective manner. Femtocells are an integral part of heterogeneous networks, whose main purpose is to improve the indoor capacity. When restricting access to home users, femtocells cause a substantial interference problem that cannot be mitigated through coordination with the macrocell base station. In this paper, we analyze multiple antenna communication on the downlink of a macrocell network, with femtocell overlay. We evaluate the feasibility of limited feed…
In this paper we address the problem of transmission of correlated sources over a fast fading multiple access channel (MAC) with partial channel state information available at both the encoders and the decoder. We provide sufficient conditions for transmission with given distortions. Next these conditions are specialized to a Gaussian MAC (GMAC). We provide the optimal power allocation strategy and compare the strategy with various levels of channel state information. Keywords: Fading MAC, Power allocation, Partial channel state information, Correlated sources.
In this paper, a new and general version of Gaussian channel in presence of two-sided state information correlated to the channel input and noise is considered. Determining a general achievable rate for the channel and obtaining the capacity in a non-limiting case, we try to analyze and solve the Gaussian version of the Cover-Chiang theorem -as an open problem- mathematically and information-theoretically. Our capacity theorem, while including all previous theorems as its special cases, explains situations that can not be analyzed by them; for example, the effect of the correlation between the…
In this paper, we investigate the impact of correlated fading on the performance of wireless multiple access channels (MAC) in the presence and absence of side information (SI) at transmitters, where the fading coefficients are modeled according to the Fisher-Snedecor F distribution. Specifically, we represent two scenarios: (i) clean MAC (i.e, without SI at transmitters), (ii) doubly dirty MAC (i.e., with the non-causally known SI at transmitters). For both system models, we derive the closedform expressions of the outage probability (OP) as well as the average capacity (AC) under independent…
