We begin an exploration of the physics associated with the general CP-conserving MSSM with Minimal Flavor Violation, the pMSSM. The 19 soft SUSY breaking parameters in this scenario are chosen so as to satisfy all existing experimental and theoretical constraints assuming that the WIMP is a conventional thermal relic, ie, the lightest neutralino. We scan this parameter space twice using both flat and log priors for the soft SUSY breaking mass parameters and compare the results which yield similar conclusions. Detailed constraints from both LEP and the Tevatron searches play a particularly important role in obtaining our final model samples. We find that the pMSSM leads to a much broader set of predictions for the properties of the SUSY partners as well as for a number of experimental observables than those found in any of the conventional SUSY breaking scenarios such as mSUGRA. This set of models can easily lead to atypical expectations for SUSY signals at the LHC.
We critically examine interpretations of hypothetical supersymmetric LHC signals, fitting to alternative wrong models of supersymmetry breaking. The signals we consider are some of the most constraining on the sparticle spectrum: invariant mass distributions with edges and end-points from the golden cascade decay chain \tilde{q}_L -> q χ_2^0 (-> \tilde{l}^{\pm} l^{\mp} q) -> χ_1^0 l^+ l^- q. We assume a CMSSM point to be the `correct' one, and fit the signals instead to minimal gauge mediated supersymmetry breaking models (mGMSB) with a neutralino quasi-stable lightest supersymmetric particle,…
We have recently completed a detailed scan of the 19-dimensional parameter space of the phenomenological MSSM, i.e., the CP-conserving MSSM assuming Minimal Flavor Violation(MFV) with the first two sfermion generations degenerate. We found a large set of parameter space points that satisfied all of the existing experimental and theoretical constraints. This analysis allows us to examine the general features of the MSSM without reference to any particular SUSY breaking scenario or any other assumptions about physics at higher scales. This study opens up new possibilities for SUSY phenomenology …
The discovery and exploration of Supersymmetry in a model-independent fashion will be a daunting task due to the large number of soft-breaking parameters in the MSSM. In this paper, we explore the capability of the ATLAS detector at the LHC ($\sqrt s=14$ TeV, 1 fb$^{-1}$) to find SUSY within the 19-dimensional pMSSM subspace of the MSSM using their standard transverse missing energy and long-lived particle searches that were essentially designed for mSUGRA. To this end, we employ a set of $\sim 71$k previously generated model points in the 19-dimensional parameter space that satisfy all of the…
We investigate the model independent nature of the Supersymmetry search strategies at the 7 TeV LHC. To this end, we study the missing-transverse-energy-based searches developed by the ATLAS Collaboration that were essentially designed for mSUGRA. We simulate the signals for ~71k models in the 19-dimensional parameter space of the pMSSM. These models have been found to satisfy existing experimental and theoretical constraints and provide insight into general features of the MSSM without reference to a particular SUSY breaking scenario or any other assumptions at the GUT scale. Using background…
We review our recent determination of the strong coupling α_s from the OPAL data for non-strange hadronic tau decays. We find that α_s(m^2_τ) =0.325+-0.018 using fixed-order perturbation theory, and α_s(m^2_τ)=0.347+-0.025 using contour-improved perturbation theory. At present, these values supersede any earlier determinations of the strong coupling from hadronic tau decays, including those from ALEPH data.
Recently we examined a large number of points in a 19-dimensional parameter subspace of the CP-conserving MSSM with Minimal Flavor Violation. We determined whether each of these points satisfied existing theoretical, experimental, and observational constraints. Here we discuss the properties of the parameter space points allowed by existing data that are relevant for dark matter searches.

We have examined the capability of the LHC, running at both 7 and 8 TeV, to explore the 19(20)-dimensional parameter space of the pMSSM with neutralino(gravitino) LSPs and soft masses up to 4 TeV employing the ATLAS SUSY analysis suite. Here we present some preliminary results for the gravitino model set, following the ATLAS analyses whose data were publically available as of mid-September 2012. We find that the impact of the reduced MET, resulting from models with gravitino LSPs on sparticle searches is more than off-set by the detectability of the many possible long-lived NLSPs.
Light vector-like quarks with non-renormalizable couplings to the Higgs are a common feature of models trying to address the electroweak (EW) hierarchy problem by treating the Higgs as a pseudo-goldstone boson of a global (approximate) symmetry. We systematically investigate the implications of the leading dimension five operators on Higgs phenomenology in presence of dynamical up- and down-type weak singlet as well as weak doublet vector-like quarks. After taking into account constraints from precision EW and flavour observables we show that contrary to the renormalizable models, significant …
The existence of dark matter particles that carry phenomenologically relevant self-interaction cross sections mediated by light dark sector states is considered to be severely constrained through a combination of experimental and observational data. The conclusion is based on the assumption of specific dark matter production mechanisms such as thermal freeze-out together with an extrapolation of a standard cosmological history beyond the epoch of primordial nucleosynthesis. In this work, we drop these assumptions and examine the scenario from the perspective of the current firm knowledge we ha…
The axion field, the angular direction of the complex scalar field associated with the spontaneous symmetry breaking of the Peccei-Quinn (PQ) symmetry, could have originated with initial non-zero velocity. The presence of a non-zero angular velocity resulting from additional terms in the potential that explicitly break the PQ symmetry has important phenomenological consequences such as a modification of the axion mass with respect to the conventional PQ framework or an explanation for the observed matter-antimatter asymmetry. We elaborate further on the consequences of the "kinetic misalignmen…
Unlike the Standard Model (SM), supersymmetric models stabilize the electroweak (EW) scale $v$ at the quantum level and {\it predict} that $v$ is a function of the TeV-valued SUSY parameters ($γ_α$) of the UV Lagrangian. We show that the (inverse of the) covariance matrix of the model in the basis of these parameters and the usual deviation $δχ^2$ (from $χ^2_{min}$ of a model) automatically encode information about the "traditional" EW fine-tuning measuring this stability, {\it provided that} the EW scale $v\sim m_Z$ is indeed regarded as a function $v=v(γ)$. It is known that large EW fine-tun…
We study the impact of the jets and missing transverse momentum SUSY analyses of the ATLAS experiment on the phenomenological MSSM (pMSSM). We investigate sets of SUSY models with a flat and logarithmic prior in the SUSY mass scale and a mass range up to 1 and 3 TeV, respectively. These models were found previously in the study 'Supersymmetry without Prejudice'. Removing models with long-lived SUSY particles, we show that 99% of 20000 randomly generated pMSSM model points with a flat prior and 87% for a logarithmic prior are excluded by the ATLAS results. For models with squarks and gluinos be…
We consider the lambda-SUSY model, a version of the NMSSM with large lambda H_1 H_2 S coupling, relaxing the approximation of large singlet mass and negligible mixing of the scalar singlet with the scalar doublets. We show that there are regions of the parameter space in which the lightest pseudoscalar can be relatively light, with unusual consequences on the decay pattern of the CP-even Higgs bosons and thus on the LHC phenomenology.
Many models of electroweak symmetry-breaking with an extended Higgs sector exhibit improved naturalness, wherein the new physics scale, at which quadratic divergences of Higgs mass parameters due to top quark loops are cut off, can be pushed beyond the reach of the Large Hadron Collider without unnatural fine tuning. Such models include examples where the new physics is supersymmetry, implying that supersymmetry may still solve the hierarchy problem, even if it eludes detection at the LHC.
We consider Koide's equation for charged leptons jointly with hypotheses implied in the ancient Dual Quark-Gluon model. The focus is to motivate the possibility of a supersymmetric framework akin to the one of D=11 maximal supergravity.
In this talk I discuss the motivations for supersymmetry, focussing on models with broken R-parity and lepton number. After describing the main theoretical features of these models, I discuss some of the signals expected at colliders such as Tevatron, LEP II, NLC and LHC.
We propose a simple gauge-mediated supersymmetry breaking model in which suitable soft breaking masses are dynamically generated without relying on a messenger sector. This model is constructed as an extention of the 3-2 model and needs no fine-tuning of parameters. The dynamical supersymmetry breaking sector contains non-renormalizable interactions and vector-like fields. Non-renormalizable terms are characterized by the couplings of O(1) in units of the Planck scale. The vacuum of this model conserves the color and electro-weak symmetry.
We summarized our report on leptonic flavor violating Higgs decay into mu + tau under the scheme of a generic supersymmetric standard model without R parity. With known experimental constraints imposed, important combinations of R-parity violating parameters which can give notable branching ratios are listed.
We discuss here some flavor structure aspects of the complete theory of supersymmetry without R-parity addressed from the perspective of fitting neutrino oscillation data based on the recent Super-Kamiokande result. The single-VEV parametrization of supersymmetry without R-parity is first reviewed, illustrating some important features not generally appreciated. For the flavor structure discussions, a naive, flavor model independent, analysis is presented, from which a few interesting things can be learned.
The messenger sector of existing models of gauge-mediated supersymmetry breaking may be simplified by using a non-renormalizable superpotential term to couple the vector-like quark and lepton messenger fields to a chiral gauge-invariant of the supersymmetry-breaking sector. This eliminates the need for a fundamental singlet and for an additional gauge sector needed to generate appropriate expectation values for the singlet component fields. This scenario is more natural if the supersymmetry-breaking sector itself involves a non-renormalizable superpotential. Several examples are constructed ba…
We investigate low-energy models of supersymmetry (SUSY) breaking by means of vector-like gauge theories for dynamical SUSY breaking. It is not necessary to introduce messenger gauge interactions utilized so far to mediate the SUSY breaking to the standard-model sector, which reduces complication in the model building. We also consider various other ways of SUSY-breaking transmission.
In this paper, we propose a possible new approach towards solving the gauge hierarchy problem without supersymmetry and without extra spacetime dimensions. This approach relies on the finiteness of string theory and the conjectured stability of certain non-supersymmetric string vacua. One crucial ingredient in this approach is the idea of ``misaligned supersymmetry'', which explains how string theories may be finite even without exhibiting spacetime supersymmetry. This approach towards solving the gauge hierarchy problem is therefore complementary to recent proposals involving both large and s…
We investigate Supersymmetric models where neither R parity nor lepton number is imposed. Neutrino masses can be kept highly suppressed compared to the electroweak scale if the $μ$-terms in the superpotential are aligned with the SUSY-breaking bilinear $B$-terms. This situation arises naturally in the framework of horizontal symmetries. The same symmetries suppress the trilinear R parity violating terms in the superpotential to an acceptable level.
I present two new renormalizable grand unified theories where the neutrino masses are generated through the type I and type III seesaw mechanisms. These theories can be considered as the simplest (SUSY) renormalizable grand unified theories based on the SU(5) gauge symmetry. Several phenomenological and cosmological aspects of these proposals are discussed.
We study flavour physics and CP violation in the context of low energy Supersymmetry with non-universal soft mass terms for sfermions. Large deviations from Standard Model predictions are allowed in B-physics, as shown in two explicit examples. In particular, the consequences of these models for a_(J/ψK) and Delta m_(B_s) are worked out.
We provide a non-technical introduction to "misaligned supersymmetry", a generic phenomenon in string theory which describes how the arrangement of bosonic and fermionic states at all string energy levels conspires to preserve finite string amplitudes even in the absence of spacetime supersymmetry. Misaligned supersymmetry thus naturally constrains the degree to which spacetime supersymmetry can be broken in string theory while preserving the finiteness of string amplitudes, and explains how the requirements of modular invariance and absence of physical tachyons affect the distribution of stat…
We construct new examples of models of metastable D=4 N=1 supersymmetry breaking in which all scales are generated dynamically. Our models rely on Seiberg duality and on the ISS mechanism of supersymmetry breaking in massive SQCD. Some of the electric quark superfields arise as composites of a strongly coupled gauge sector. This allows us to start with a simple cubic superpotential and an asymptotically free gauge group in the ultraviolet, and end up with an infrared effective theory which breaks supersymmetry dynamically in a metastable state.
Grand Unified Theories based on the group SO(10) generically provide interesting and testable relations between the charged fermions and neutrino sector masses and mixings. In the light of the recent neutrino data, we reexamine these relations both in supersymmetric and non-supersymmetric models, and give a brief review of their present status.
We present a systematic analysis of the decay B--> X_s + gamma at the leading log within the framework of Supersymmetry without R-parity. We point out some new contributions in the form of bilinear-trilinear combination of R-parity violating (RPV) couplings that are enhanced by large tanbeta. We also improve by a few orders of magnitude, bounds on several combinations of R-parity violating parameters.
With the on-shell renormalization scheme, we discuss neutrino masses up to one-loop approximation in the Supersymmetry without lepton number conservation and R-parity. Ii is shown that in this model with experimentally allowed parameters, $Δm^2_{23}, Δm^2_{12}$ and the mixing angles $|\sinθ{23}|,|\sinθ_{12}|$ which are consistent with the present observation values can be produced. We find that small neutrino mass ($\leq$ 1 eV) sets a loose constraint on the R-parity violation parameters in the soft breaking terms.
The anomalous dimensions of dimension-six operators in the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT) respect holomorphy to a large extent. The holomorphy conditions are reminiscent of supersymmetry, even though the SMEFT is not a supersymmetric theory.
We consider heterotic string backgrounds in four-dimensional Minkowski space, where N=1 supersymmetry is spontaneously broken at a low scale m_{3/2} by a stringy Scherk-Schwarz mechanism. We review how the effective gauge couplings at 1-loop may evade the "decompactification problem", namely the proportionality of the gauge threshold corrections, with the large volume of the compact space involved in the supersymmetry breaking.
It is generally believed that weak scale supersymmetry implies weak scale supergravity, in the sense that the masses of the gravitino and gravitationally coupled moduli have masses below 100 TeV. This paper presents a realistic framework for supersymmetry breaking in the hidden sector in which the masses of the gravitino and gravitational moduli can be much larger. This cleanly eliminates the cosmological problems of hidden sector models. Supersymmetry breaking is communicated to the visible sector by anomaly-mediated supersymmetry breaking. The framework is compatible with perturbative gauge …
I consider models in which non-standard supersymmetry breaking terms, including Dirac gaugino masses, arise from F-term breaking mediated by operators with a $1/M^3$ suppression. In these models, the supersoft properties found in the case of D-term breaking are absent in general, but can be obtained as a special case that is a fixed point of the renormalization group equations. The $μ$ term is replaced by three distinct supersymmetry-breaking parameters, decoupling the Higgs scalar potential from the Higgsino masses. Both holomorphic and non-holomorphic scalar cubic interactions with minimal f…
It is a possibility that the superworld (supersymmetric partners of our world) does exist without supersymmetry. The two worlds are being distinguished by an unbroken discrete $Z_2$ symmetry (similar to R-parity in supersymmetry). We lose the solution to the hierarchy problem. However, such a scenario has several motivations. For example, the lightest neutral superworld particle will be a candidate for dark matter. The other being, as in supersymmetry, it is possible to achieve gauge coupling unification. One major difference with the supersymmetric theory is that such a theory is much more ge…
We investigate predictions of a minimal realistic non-supersymmetric SU(5) grand unified theory. To accomplish unification and generate neutrino mass we introduce one extra Higgs representation--a 15 of SU(5)--to the particle content of the minimal Georgi-Glashow scenario. Generic prediction of this setup is a set of rather light scalar leptoquarks. In the case of the most natural implementation of the type II see-saw mechanism their mass is in the phenomenologically interesting region (O(10^2--10^3) GeV). As such, our scenario has a potential to be tested at the next generation of collider ex…
A long-lived decaying dark matter as a resolution to Fermi, PAMELA and ATIC anomalies is investigated in the framework of split supersymmetry (SUSY) without R-parity, where the neutralino is regarded as the dark matter and the extreme fine-tuned couplings for the long-lived neutralino are naturally evaded in the usual approach.
In the event of an observation of neutrinoless double beta decay, a relevant question would be: what lepton number violating physics is responsible for the decay? The exchange of Majorana neutrinos and/or supersymmetric particles may contribute. We point out that measurements of supersymmetric signals at the LHC, including single slepton production, could be used to help bound some supersymmetric processes contributing to neutrinoless double beta decay. LHC information about the supersymmetric spectrum could be combined with Bd-Bd bar mixing data in order to bound a competing neutrinoless doub…
In focus point supersymmetry, all squarks and sleptons, including those of the third generation, have multi-TeV masses without sacrificing naturalness. We examine the implications of this framework for low energy constraints and the light Higgs boson mass. Undesirable contributions to proton decay and electric dipole moments, generic in many supersymmetric models, are strongly suppressed. As a result, the prediction for alpha_s in simple grand unified theories is 3 to 5 standard deviations closer to the experimental value, and the allowed CP-violating phases are larger by one to two orders of …
This paper discusses supersymmetry discovery potential of the upgraded DØexperiment at the Tevatron $p\bar{p}$ collider. Six final states with large transverse energy (momentum) leptons or photons (with or without large transverse momentum imbalances) are studied. These final states are expected to have small backgrounds and are thereby ideal for new physics searches. Implications of the analyses of these final states on Gauge Mediated Supersymmetry Breaking models are discussed for integrated luminosities of 2 and 30 1/fb. This study demonstrates that a large class of supersymmetry models can…
We show how Bilinear R-Parity violation within the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model can solve the atmospheric and solar neutrino problems by generating naturally small and hierarchical neutrino masses, together with neutrino mixing angles consistent with experiments. The relation between collider and neutrino physics is emphasized.
We propose a simple superpotential for the Higgs doublets, where the electroweak symmetry is broken at the supersymmetric level. We show that, for a class of supersymmetry breaking scenarios, the electroweak scale can be stable even though the supersymmetry breaking scale is much higher than it. Therefore, all the superpartners and the Higgs bosons can be decoupled from the electroweak scale, nevertheless no fine-tuning is needed. We present a concrete model, as an existence proof of such a model, which generates the superpotential dynamically. According to supersymmetry breaking scenarios to …
Focusing on a simple three neutrino oscillation scenario motivated by the recent Super-Kamiokande result, we discuss both tree-level and 1-loop contributions to neutrino masses in supersymmetry without R-parity, aiming at discerning the flavor structure issues of the theory. The single-VEV parametrization framework, which allows the first consistent treatment of the bilinear and trilinear R-parity violating terms, and hence the tree and 1-loop contributions, without any assumption on the nature of R-parity violation. Though the very small neutrino masses implies stringent suppressions of the r…
We perform the complete computation of the contributions to $b\to s+γ, b\to s e^{+}e^{-}, b\to s\sum ν_{i} \barν_{i}$ in supersymmetric model with bilinear R-parity violation. We compare our calculations with the evaluations in SM and the experimental results. We find that the supersymmetric contributions can be quite large in those processes. From the analysis and experimental results, we can get some constraints on the mass spectrum in the model.
Without supersymmetry, the gauge couplings in the standard model with five Higgs doublets unify around 10^14 GeV. In this case, the trinified model, SU(3)_C x SU(3)_L x SU(3)_R x Z_3, with the minimal Higgs sector required for symmetry breaking, is the ideal grand-unified candidate. Small neutrino masses are generated via a radiative seesaw mechanism, without the need for intermediate scales, additional Higgs fields, or higher-dimensional operators. The proton lifetime is above the experimental limits, with the decay modes p -> \barνK^+ and p -> mu^+ K^0 potentially observable. The split-SUSY …
In this letter, we report on lepton flavor violating Higgs decay into mu+tau in the framework of the generic supersymmetric standard model without R parity and list interesting combinations of R-parity violating parameters. We impose other known experimental constraints on the parameters of the model and show our results from the R-parity violating parameters. In our analysis, the branching ratio of Higgs to mu+tau can exceed 10^{-5} within admissible parameter space.
We analyze the low energy features of a supersymmetric standard model where the anomaly--induced contributions to the soft parameters are dominant in a scenario with bilinear $R$--parity violation. This class of models leads to mixings between the standard model particles and supersymmetric ones which change the low energy phenomenology and searches for supersymmetry. In addition, $R$--parity violation interactions give rise to small neutrino masses which we show to be consistent with the present observations.
We demonstrate that the R-parity breaking interactions within their current experimental upper bounds can give rise to large mixing-induced CP asymmetry in exclusive radiative B decays that may be detectable in the upcoming B factories.
We construct a gauge mediation model of dynamical supersymmetry breaking (DSB) based on a vector-like gauge theory, in which there is a unique color-preserving true vacuum. The DSB scale $Λ/4π$ turns out to be as high as $Λ/4π\simeq 10^{8-9} GeV$, since the transmission of the DSB effects to the standard model sector is completed through much higher loops. This model is perfectly natural and phenomenologically consistent. We also stress that the dangerous D-term problem for the messenger U(1)_m is automatically solved by a charge conjugation symmetry in the vector-like gauge theory.
Metastable charged particles produced at the LHC can decay in the quiescent period between beam crossing in the detector leading to spectacular signals. In this paper we consider augmenting the Standard Model with gluino, Higgsino and wino-like particles without invoking supersymmetry. Proton stability is ensured by imposing a discrete $Z_6$ parity that fixes their possible interaction and makes them metastable in a large portion of the parameter space. We investigate the possibility of employing these fields to improve gauge coupling unification, explain dark matter, generate neutrino mass an…
We present new theories of dynamical SUSY breaking in which the strong interactions that break SUSY also give rise to composite quarks and leptons with naturally small Yukawa couplings. In these models, SUSY breaking is communicated directly to the composite fields without ``messenger'' interactions. The compositeness scale can be anywhere between 10 TeV and the Planck scale. These models can naturally solve the supersymmetric flavor problem, and generically predict sfermion mass unification independent from gauge unification.
We investigate the possibility that supersymmetry is not a fundamental symmetry of nature, but emerges as an accidental approximate global symmetry at low energies. This can occur if the visible sector is non-supersymmetric at high scales, but flows toward a strongly-coupled superconformal fixed point at low energies; or, alternatively, if the visible sector is localized near the infrared brane of a warped higher-dimensional spacetime with supersymmetry broken only on the UV brane. These two scenarios are related by the AdS/CFT correspondence. In order for supersymmetry to solve the hierarchy …
Naturalness of electroweak symmetry breaking in weak scale supersymmetric theories may suggest the absence of the conventional supersymmetric desert. We present a simple, realistic framework for supersymmetry in which (most of) the virtues of the supersymmetric desert are naturally reproduced without having a large energy interval above the weak scale. The successful supersymmetric prediction for the low-energy gauge couplings is reproduced due to a gauged R symmetry present in the effective theory at the weak scale. The observable sector superpotential naturally takes the form of the next-to-…
We suggest SU(5)$'$ in the hidden sector toward a possible gauge mediated supersymmetry breaking scenario for removing the SUSY flavor problem, with an example constructed in $\Z_{12-I}$ with three families. The example we present has the Pati-Salam type classification of particles in the observable sector and has no exotics at low energy. We point out that six or seven very light pairs of ${\bf 5}'$ and $\bar{\bf 5}'$ out of ten vectorlike $\five'$ and $\fiveb'$ pairs of SU(5)$'$ is achievable, leading to a possibility of an unstable supersymmetry breaking vacuum. The possibility of different…
We consider the generation of neutrino Majorana mass and transition magnetic moment by the lepton-number violating $λ$ and/or $λ'$ couplings in R-parity-violating supersymmetric models. We update (and improve) the existing upper limits on the relevant couplings using the most recent data on neutrino masses and mixings, indicating also the possible improvement by the GENIUS project. We study the implication of this update on the induced neutrino magnetic moment.
The clockwork mechanism would be completely spoiled by the presence of a cosmological constant in the bulk of its 5D construction, or by analogous terms in the discrete case. It is believed that supersymmetry is required to forbid the appearance of these fatal terms, thus apparently tying the fate of the clockwork to the presence of supersymmetry. In this letter we argue that a robust clockwork can be obtained also without supersymmetry, by providing a model for the clockwork/linear dilaton EFT where this protection is instead related to diffeomorphism invariance in a higher number of extra di…
In the absence of low energy supersymmetry, we show that (a) the dark matter particle alone at the TeV scale can improve gauge coupling unification, raising the unification scale up to the lower bound imposed by proton decay, and (b) the dark matter stability can automatically follow from the grand unification symmetry. Within reasonably simple unified models, a unique candidate satisfying these two properties is singled out: a fermion isotriplet with zero hypercharge, member of a 45 (or larger) representation of SO(10). We discuss the phenomenological signatures of this TeV scale fermion, whi…
We identify a class of chiral models where the one-loop effective potential for Higgs scalar fields is finite without any requirement of supersymmetry. It corresponds to the case where the Higgs fields are identified with the components of a gauge field along compactified extra dimensions. We present a six dimensional model with gauge group U(3)xU(3) and quarks and leptons accomodated in fundamental and bi-fundamental representations. The model can be embedded in a D-brane configuration of type I string theory and, upon compactification on a T^2/Z_2 orbifold, it gives rise to the standard mode…
