Using detailed first principles calculations, we have found a new class of stable organic molecular magnets based on zwitterionic molecules possessing donor, $π$ bridge, and acceptor groups. These molecules are organic molecules containing only C, H and N. The quantum mechanical nature of the magnetic properties originates from the conjugated $π$ bridge (involving only p electrons) where the exchange interactions between electron spin are relatively strong and local and are independent of the length of the $π$ bridge, enabling the easy construction of a molecular magnetic device with specified length.
Molecular dynamics calculations were preformed on organic crystals 4-N,N-dimethylamino-4'-N'-methyl-stilbazolium tosylate (DAST) and 4-N,N-dimethylamino-4'-N'-methylstilbazolium 2,4,6-trimethylbenzenesulfonate (DSTMS). Vibrational modes of the structures were investigated to examine the single unit cell phononic contribution of the organic crystals to their terahertz generating capabilities. Linear optical properties were also calculated from snapshots of the molecular dynamics structures through Green-Kubo relations, and compared with experimental transmission.
A computational approach for predictive simulations of the nanoscale morphology in the early steps of the formation of the interface between metals and organic molecular semiconductors is presented. Despite the relevance of the metal-molecule junction for the development of electronic applications, structural details at the interface are often difficult to assess. Our approach, based on the integration of density functional theory with methods for the simulation of growth dynamics, allows to unravel the structural details of the formation of gold aggregates onto molecular materials. Simulation…
Based on first principles calculations, we predict and characterize the flexibility of two aluminium-based Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs), CAU-13 and NOTT-300. Both materials have a wine rack topology similar to that of MIL-53(Al), the archetypal breathing MOF, yet their flexibility has not been demonstrated so far.
In organic field-effect transistors, the structure of the constituent molecules can be tailored to minimize the disorder experienced by charge carriers. Experiments on two perylene derivatives show that disorder can be suppressed by attaching longer core substituents - thereby reducing potential fluctuations in the transistor channel and increasing the mobility at low temperature - without altering the intrinsic transport properties.
Predicting charge transport in organic molecular crystals is notoriously challenging. Carrier mobility calculations in organic semiconductors are dominated by quantum chemistry methods based on charge hopping, which are laborious and only moderately accurate. We compute from first principles the electron-phonon scattering and the phonon-limited hole mobility of naphthalene crystal in the framework of ab initio band theory. Our calculations combine GW electronic bandstructures, ab initio electron-phonon scattering, and the Boltzmann transport equation. The calculated hole mobility is in very go…
Very thin (1.2-2.5nm) self-assembled organic dielectric monolayers have been integrated into organic thin-film diode to achieve electrical characteristics. These dielectrics are fabricated by self-assembling deposition, resulting in smooth, strongly adherent, thermally stable, organosiloxane thin films having interesting electrical capacitances (around 150 nF cm-2 at -3V) and insulating properties (leakage current densities around 10-5 A cm2 at -1V).
Understanding the charge carrier transport in the disordered organic molecular semiconductors is a fascinating and still unresolved problem in modern condensed-matter physics, yet has an extremely important bearing on their application in ``plastic'' based field effect transistor, light emitting diodes and lasers. The most contentious issue in this subject is the nature of the charge carriers i.e. whether they are bare electrons or dressed electrons, known as polarons. Here we show for the first time, by means of simple experiments that polaron moving in static disorder is responsible for char…
In this study, by engineering the molecular structure, we optimize the spin Hall conductivity and the spin Hall angle in organics by more than five and three orders of magnitude, respectively. We identify two important characteristics of organic molecules, namely substitution of heavy elements and the torsion angles between constituent units of the polymer, which have significant effects on the spin Hall signal. These characteristics are directly related to the spin-orbit coupling and the energetic disorder, both of which offer a wide scope of chemical tunability in high-mobility polymers. We …
We have investigated the charge carrier transport in organic molecular semiconductors. It has been found that mobility is a function of electric field and temperature due to hopping conduction. Several theoretical models for charge transport in disordered solids have been debated over the role of spatial and energetic correlation in these systems and such correlations have been recently shown to explain the universal electric field dependence of mobility. We have compared and evaluated the applicability of different theoretically proposed models using very simple experimental results and based…
We demonstrate the application of orbital k-space tomography for the analysis of the bonding occurring at metal-organic interfaces. Using angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES), we probe the spatial structure of the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and the former lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) of one monolayer 3,4,9,10-perylenetetracarboxylic-dianhydride (PTCDA) on Ag(110) and (111) surfaces and in particular the influence of the hybridization between the orbitals and the electronic states of the substrate. We are able to quantify and localize the substrate cont…
Since the discovery of the TTF-TCNQ charge transfer complex as the first metallic material composed of molecules, many other molecular metals were reported. It was however only recently that the first metal-free single-component organic metal was characterized by Kobayashi et al. Although the measured properties of a poorly crystalline sample clearly showed metallic behavior, the crystal structure itself could not be solved, so that the conduction mechanism in this material is still unknown. Here, we present the results of theoretical crystal structure prediction calculations for the TED molec…
We show by means of ab-initio calculations that the organic molecular crystal TTF-CA is multiferroic: it has an instability to develop spontaneously both ferroelectric and magnetic ordering. Ferroelectricity is driven by a Peierls transition of the TTF-CA in its ionic state. Subsequent antiferromagnetic ordering strongly enhances the opposing electronic contribution to the polarization: it is so large that it switches the direction of the total ferroelectric moment. Within an extended Hubbard model we capture the essence of the electronic interactions in TTF-CA, confirm the presence of a multi…
Charge carrier recombination is studied in operational organic solar cells made from the polymer:fullerene system PCDTBT:PC71BM (poly[N-9"-heptadecanyl-2,7-carbazole-alt-5,5-(4',7'-di-2-thienyl-2',1',3'-benzothiadiazole)] : [6,6]-phenyl-C$_{70}$-butyric acid methyl ester). A newly developed technique High Intensity Resistance dependent PhotoVoltage (HI-RPV) is presented for reliably quantifying the bimolecular recombination coefficient independently of variations in experimental conditions, thereby resolving key limitations of previous experimental approaches. Experiments are performed on sola…
Molecular self-assembly has been extensively used for surface modification of metals and oxides for a variety of applications, including molecular and organic electronics. One of the goals of this research is to learn how the electronic properties of these surfaces can be modified by self-assembled monolayers (SAM). Here, we demonstrate a new type of molecular self-assembly: the growth of organosilane SAMs at the surface of organic semiconductors, which results in a dramatic increase of the surface conductivity of organic materials. For organosilane molecules with a large dipole moment, SAM-in…
By comparing photoemission spectroscopy with a non-perturbative dynamical mean field theory extension to many-body ab initio calculations, we show in the prominent case of pentacene crystals that an excellent agreement with experiment for the bandwidth, dispersion and lifetime of the hole carrier bands can be achieved in organic semiconductors provided that one properly accounts for the coupling to molecular vibrational modes and the presence of disorder. Our findings rationalize the growing experimental evidence that even the best band structure theories based on a many-body treatment of elec…
Rapid, non-destructive characterization of molecular level chemistry for organic matter (OM) is experimentally challenging. Raman spectroscopy is one of the most widely used techniques for non-destructive chemical characterization, although it currently does not provide detailed identification of molecular components in OM, due to the combination of diffraction-limited spatial resolution and poor applicability of peak-fitting algorithms. Here, we develop a genome-inspired collective molecular structure fingerprinting approach, which utilizes ab initio calculations and data mining techniques to…
Metal/semiconductor interfaces govern the operation of semiconductor devices through the formation of charge injection barriers that can be controlled by tuning the metal work function. However, the controlling ability is typically limited to being static. We show that a dynamic nature can be imparted to the interfaces using electrode surface modification with a structurally disordered molecular monolayer. The barrier height at the interfaces is altered significantly in a reversible way by an external electric field. As a result, a dramatic change in the carrier transport properties through th…
The tunability of high-mobility organic semi-conductors (OSCs) holds great promise for molecular spintronics. In this study, we show this extreme variability - and therefore potential tunability - of the molecular gyromagnetic coupling ("g-") tensor with respect to the geometric and electronic structure in a much studied class of OSCs. Composed of a structural theme of phenyl- and chalcogenophene (group XVI element containing, five-membered) rings and alkyl functional groups, this class forms the basis of several intensely studied high-mobility polymers and molecular OSCs. We show how in this …
Violet Lander (VL) (C108H104) is a large organic molecule that when deposited on Cu (110) exhibited lock-and-key like behavior (Otero et al., Nature Mater. 3, 779 (2004)). In this work we report on a detailed fully atomistic molecular dynamics study of this phenomenon. Our results show that it has its physical basis in the interplay of the molecular hydrogens and the Cu(110) atomic spacing, which is a direct consequence of an accidental commensurability between molecule and surface dimensions. This knowledge could be used to engineer new molecules capable of displaying lock-and-key behavior wi…
The excited state dynamics in organic semiconductors plays an important role for many processes associated with light absorption and emission. We have studied the momentum dependence of the lowest singlet excitons in tetracene molecular solids, an archetype system for other organic semiconductors. Our results reveal an anisotropic bandstructure of these excitons with an energy minimum at finite momentum, i. e., a low energy exciton pocket. The existence of such low energy states might have important consequences for the photophysical behavior, also in view of applications in, e. g., organic so…
Vapour-deposited organic glasses are currently in use in many optoelectronic devices. Their operation temperature is limited by the glass transition temperature of the organic layers and thermal management strategies become increasingly important to improve the lifetime of the device. Here we report the unusual finding that molecular orientation heavily influences heat flow propagation in glassy films of small molecule organic semiconductors. The thermal conductivity of vapour-deposited thin-film semiconductor glasses is anisotropic and controlled by the deposition temperature. We compare our …
Hybrid 2D-2D materials composed by perpendicularly oriented covalent organic framework (COFs) and graphene were prepared and tested for energy storage applications. Diboronic acid molecules covalently attached to graphene oxide (GO) were used as nucleation sites for directing vertical growth of COF-1 nanosheets (v-COF-GO). The hybrid material shows forest of COF-1 nanosheets with thickness of ~3 to 15 nm in edge-on orientation relative to GO. The same reaction performed in absence of molecular pillars resulted in uncontrollable growth of thick COF-1 platelets parallel to the surface of GO. The…
Single-crystal organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) based on p-channel molecular semiconductors have led to breakthrough carrier mobilities and to the observation of band-like transport. These results represent the limit in our quest for the ultimate OFET performance. However, band-like transport has not been reported for n-channel OFETs and, for p-channel transistors, it is not understood why it occurs only for certain molecular materials. Here we report band-like electron transport for n-channel OFETs based on PDIF-CN2 single-crystals. Devices with different gate dielectrics - vacuum, Cy…
An electronic band with quasi-one dimensional dispersion is found at the interface between a monolayer of a charge-transfer complex (TTF-TCNQ) and a Au(111) surface. Combined local spectroscopy and numerical calculations show that the band results from a complex mixing of metal and molecular states. The molecular layer folds the underlying metal states and mixes with them selectively, through the TTF component, giving rise to anisotropic hybrid bands. Our results suggest that, by tuning the components of such molecular layers, the dimensionality and dispersion of organic-metal interface states…
Two-dimensional atomic crystals are extensively studied in recent years due to their exciting physics and device applications. However, a molecular counterpart, with scalable processability and competitive device performance, is still challenging. Here, we demonstrate that high-quality few-layer dioctylbenzothienobenzothiophene molecular crystals can be grown on graphene or boron nitride substrate via van der Waals epitaxy, with precisely controlled thickness down to monolayer, large-area single crystal, low process temperature and patterning capability. The crystalline layers are atomically s…
Emitting dipole orientation (EDO) is an important issue of emitting materials in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) for an increase of outcoupling efficiency of light. The origin of preferred orientation of emitting dipole of spherically shaped iridium-based heteroleptic phosphorescent dyes doped in organic layers is revealed by simulation of vacuum deposition using molecular dynamics (MD) along with quantum mechanical (QM) characterization of the phosphors for a direct comparison with experimental observations of EDO. Consideration of both the electronic transitions in a molecular frame an…
We compute the electronic structure of two-dimensional (2D) materials decorated with self-assembled organic monolayers using density functional theory. We find that 2D materials are strongly impacted by near-field electrostatic effects resulting from high multipoles of the organic layer electronic density. We show that this effect can lead to significant (~0.5V) modulation of the in-plane potential experienced by electrons in 2D materials within ~4Åfrom the molecular layer, with a transition between near- and far-field depending on the lateral extent of the molecules. We develop a theory of th…
Thin molecular films under model conditions are often exploited as benchmarks and case studies to investigate the electronic and structural changes occurring on the surface of metallic electrodes. Here we show that the modification of a metallic surface induced by oxygen adsorption allows the preservation of the geometry of a molecular adlayer, giving access to the determination of molecular orbital symmetries by means of near-edge x-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy, NEXAFS. As a prototypical example, we exploited Nickel Tetraphenyl Porphyrin molecules deposited on a bare and on an o…
According to Moore law, the silicon semiconductor transistor based information system is facing its physical limitations due to fluctuations of random charge and leakage current. Molecular electronics is becoming more and more attractive owing to the advantages of easy molecular structure variability, flexibility, low-cost and compatibility with bioelectronics. In this handbook chapter, we reviewed the recent research progress of molecular electronics, especially the studies on nanoscale information memories, from the viewpoints of structure-property relationship. Two kinds of molecular system…
The fabrication of single-carrier organic diodes from a series of sixteen molecular materials is reported. We experimentally demonstrate how the molecular structure affects the film morphology, and how the film morphology influences the diode performance. The compounds, with moderate molecular size and dendritic structures, are shown to be more favorable for good device performance than those small molecules with symmetry structures. The device turn-on voltage is found to be strongly dependent on the molecular first oxidation potentials. Independent of different anode materials, no obvious int…
We report on electronic-structure calculations for the pentacene and rubrene crystals, based on experimental crystal geometries measured at different temperatures. The results are in very good agreement with angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy data that indicate that the widths of the valence and conduction bands in both materials become narrower at higher temperatures. Our findings strongly suggest that the thermal bandwidth narrowing in the pentacene and rubrene crystals is primarily caused by the thermal expansion of the lattice rather than by a renormalization of the transfer integra…
As the dimensions of electronic devices approach those of molecules, the size, geometry and chemical composition of the contact electrodes play increasingly dominant roles in device functions. It is shown here that single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNT) can be used as quasi one-dimensional (1D) electrodes to construct organic field effect transistors (FET) with molecular scale width (~2 nm) and channel length (1-3 nm). An important feature owing to the quasi 1D electrode geometry is the favorable gate electrostatics that allows for efficient switching of ultra-short organic channels. This affor…
In hybrid perovskites, the organic molecules and inorganic frameworks exhibit distinct static and dynamic characteristics. Their coupling will lead to unprecedented phenomena, which have attracted wide research interests. In this paper, we employed Deep Potential molecular dynamics (DPMD), a large-scale MD simulation scheme with DFT accuracy, to study $\mathrm{FA/MAPbI_3}$ hybrid perovskites. A spontaneous hybrid nano-domain behavior, namely multiple molecular rotation nano-domains embedded into a single $\mathrm{[PbI_6]^{4-}}$ octahedra rotation domain, was firstly discovered at low temperatu…
Charge transport in organic semiconductors is notoriously extremely sensitive to the presence of disorder, both intrinsic and extrinsic, especially for n-type materials. Intrinsic dynamic disorder stems from large thermal fluctuations both in intermolecular transfer integrals and (molecular) site energies in weakly interacting van der Waals solids and sources transient localization of the charge carriers. The molecular vibrations that drive transient localization typically operate at low-frequency (< a-few-hundred cm-1), which renders it difficult to assess them experimentally. Hitherto, this …
We report an investigation by means of adsorption experiments and molecular simulation of the behavior of a recently synthesized cationic metal-organic framework. We used a combination of quantum chemistry calculations and classical forcefield-based Grand Canonical Monte Carlo simulations to shed light onto the localization of extra-framework halogenide anions in the material. We also studied the adsorption of small gas molecules into the pores of the material using molecular simulation and investigated the coadsorption of binary gas mixtures.
Electrically stimulated switching of a charge injection barrier at the interface between an organic semiconductor and an electrode modified with a disordered monolayer (DM) is studied by using various benzenethiol derivatives as DM molecules. The switching behavior is induced by a structural change in the DM molecules, and is manifested as a reversible inversion of the polarity of DM-modified Au electrode/rubrene/DM-modified Au electrode diodes. The switching direction is found to be dominantly determined by the push-back effect of the thiol bonding group, while the terminal group modulates th…
In this work we address the microscopic effects related to the implementation of a Bathophenanthroline (BPhen) exciton blocking layer (EBL) sandwiched between Ag cathode and molecular Diindenoperylene (DIP)/C60 bilayer of a photovoltaic cell. Complementary studies of current density, external quantum efficiency, and photoluminescence quenching for EBL thicknesses up to 50 nm indicate that Ag atoms are able to penetrate through the whole 35 nm thick C60 film into the crystalline DIP layer underneath, thereby enhancing exciton quenching if no blocking layer is applied. In contrast, an optimal tr…
Relative to conventional wet-chemical synthesis techniques, on-surface synthesis of organic networks in ultrahigh vacuum has few control parameters. The molecular deposition rate and substrate temperature are typically the only synthesis variables to be adjusted dynamically. Here we demonstrate that reducing conditions in the vacuum environment can be created and controlled without dedicated sources -- relying only on backfilled hydrogen gas and ion gauge filaments -- and can dramatically influence the Ullmann-like on-surface reaction used for synthesizing two-dimensional covalent organic fram…
We show clear experimental evidence of co-operative terahertz (THz) dynamics observed below 3 THz (~100 cm-1), for a low-symmetry Zr-based metal-organic framework (MOF) structure, termed MIL-140A [ZrO(O2C-C6H4-CO2)]. Utilizing a combination of high-resolution inelastic neutron scattering and synchrotron radiation far-infrared spectroscopy, we measured low-energy vibrations originating from the hindered rotations of organic linkers, whose energy barriers and detailed dynamics have been elucidated via ab initio density functional theory (DFT) calculations. For completeness, we obtained Raman spe…
Physical-chemical Approach for the Impact of Modifying Molecular Bridges of TPA-Based Systems to Improve the Photovoltaic Properties of Organic Solar Cells
In addition to electronic polarization or charge redistribution, the shape of neutral conjugated molecules yields position-dependent ionization potentials and electron affinities in organic thin films. Self-consistent I(n) and A(n) are computed in each layer n of 10-layer films of prototypical organics on a metal. The depth dependence of I(n) is discussed at surfaces of anthracene, C60 and PTCDA. The shape contribution can be substantial, up to 0.5 eV, and comes primarily from charge-quadrupole interactions.
We analyze a model that accounts for the inherently large thermal lattice fluctuations associated to the weak van der Waals inter-molecular bonding in crystalline organic semiconductors. In these materials the charge mobility generally exhibits a "metallic-like" power-law behavior, with no sign of thermally activated hopping characteristic of carrier self-localization, despite apparent mean-free-paths comparable or lower than the inter-molecular spacing. Our results show that such puzzling transport regime can be understood from the simultaneous presence of band carriers and incoherent states …
High thermal conductivity dominated by thermal phonons with mean free paths exceeding hundred nanometer in three-dimensional covalent organic framework derivatives: a molecular dynamics study
We investigate the charge-transfer interfaces between metal and redox arylamine molecular films through studying the current-voltage characteristics of single-layer organic diodes with the aid of anode interfacial engineering method. The diode turn-on voltage is shown to be highly sensitive to the arylamine/metal charge-transfer interfaces and thus can serve as a probe in detecting such organic/metal interfaces. We show that the diode electrical performance could be tuned through engineering the arylamine/metal interfaces via controlling the factors of anode work function, arylamine substitute…
The long charge carrier lifetime of the hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites (HOIPs) is the key for their remarkable performance as a solar cell material. The microscopic mechanism for the long lifetime is still in debate. Here, by using muon spin relaxation technique that probes the fluctuation of local magnetic fields, we show that the muon depolarization rate ($Δ$) of a prototype HOIP methylammonium lead iodide (MAPbI$_3$) shows a sharp decrease with increasing temperature in two steps above 120 K and 190 K across the structural transition from orthorhombic to tetragonal structure at 162 K.…
The nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of the Indole-7-carboxyldehyde (I7C) have been investigated by computational and experimental (UV-VIS, Raman) data analysis. Mulliken charge analysis, molecular electrostatic potential, and UV-VIS absorption and vibrational Raman studies have been used to analyze the intra-molecular charge transfer occurrence in the probe system. Observed high value of dipole moment, linear polarizability and first order hyperpolarizability values suggest that the indole derivative may indeed have possibility to show good NLO behaviour.
In this paper, we demonstrate that atom probe tomography (APT) can be applied to small-molecule organic materials. We show that APT can provide an unprecedented combination of mass resolution of $\lt 1~\mathrm{Da}$, spatial resolution of $\sim 0.3~\mathrm{nm}$ in z and $\sim 1~\mathrm{nm}$ in x-y, and analytic sensitivity of $\sim 50~\mathrm{ppm}$ with no evidence of molecular fragmentation. We discuss two systems that demonstrate the power of APT to uncover structure-property relationships in organic systems that have proven extremely difficult to probe using existing techniques: (1) a previo…
The electronic and optical properties of the paradigmatic F4TCNQ-doped pentacene in the low-doping limit are investigated by a combination of state-of-the-art many-body \emph{ab initio} methods accounting for environmental screening effects, and a carefully parametrized model Hamiltonian. We demonstrate that while the acceptor level lies very deep in the gap, the inclusion of electron-hole interactions strongly stabilizes dopant-semiconductor charge transfer states and, together with spin statistics and structural relaxation effects, rationalize the possibility for room-temperature dopant ioni…
Charge transport in crystalline organic semiconductors is intrinsically limited by the presence of large thermal molecular motions, which are a direct consequence of the weak van der Waals inter-molecular interactions. These lead to an original regime of transport called \textit{transient localization}, sharing features of both localized and itinerant electron systems. After a brief review of experimental observations that pose a challenge to the theory, we concentrate on a commonly studied model which describes the interaction of the charge carriers with inter-molecular vibrations. We present…
Metal-organic frameworks comprehend a wide class of hybrid organic-inorganic materials with general structure A$_m$BX$_n$, with $A$ and $X$ being organic molecules and B a metal cation. This often results in enhanced structural flexibility and new functionalities. Hybrid perovskites ABX$_3$ are a well-known example.} In an Iron-based perovskites, (DMA)Fe^{II-III}(COOH)_3, dimethylammonium (DMA) molecules are organized in a hexagonal structure. They are orientationally disordered at high temperatures, but order at around $T=100$~K in a peculiar toroidal pattern. Recent experimental and theoreti…
Charge transport in organic semiconductors is notoriously extremely sensitive to the presence of disorder, both internal and external (i.e. related to the interactions with the dielectric layer), especially for n-type materials. Internal dynamic disorder stems from large thermal fluctuations both in intermolecular transfer integrals and (molecular) site energies in weakly interacting van der Waals solids and sources transient localization of the charge carriers. The molecular vibrations that drive transient localization typically operate at low-frequency (< a-few-hundred cm-1), which renders i…
While most of the studies on molecular machines have been performed in solution, interfacing these supramolecular systems with solid-state nanostructures and materials is very important in view of their utilization in sensing components working by chemical and photonic actuation. Host polymeric materials, and particularly polymer nanofibers, enable the manipulation of the functional molecules constituting molecular machines, and provide a way to induce and control the supramolecular organization. Here, we present electrospun nanocomposites embedding a self-assembling rotaxane-type system that …
We show that thermally evaporated lead (Pb) preserves the electronic properties of organic monolayers on Si and the surface passivation of the Si surface itself. The obtained current-voltage characteristics are in accordance with results from the well-established hanging mercury drop method and preserve both the molecule-induced dipolar effect and length-attenuation of current. We rationalize our findings by the lack of interaction between the Pb and the Si substrate. Our method is fast, scalable, compatible to standard semiconductor processing, and can help to spur the large-scale utilization…
Organic heterojunction solar cells are analyzed within a minimal model that includes the essential physical features of such systems. The dynamical properties of this model, calculated using a master equation approach, account for the qualitative behavior of such systems. The model yields explicit results for current-voltage behavior as well as performance characteristics expressed in terms of the thermodynamic efficiency as well as the power conversion efficiency at maximum power, making it possible to evaluate the optimal setup for this device model.
From first principles calculations we determine the Coulomb interaction between two holes on oligo-acene and -thiophene molecules in a crystal, as a function of the oligomer length. The relaxation of the molecular geometry in the presence of holes is found to be small. In contrast, the electronic polarization of the molecules that surround the charged oligomer, reduces the bare Coulomb repulsion between the holes by approximately a factor of two. In all cases the effective hole-hole repulsion is much larger than the calculated valence bandwidth, which implies that at high doping levels the pro…
