Polynomial relations among principal minors of a 4x4-matrix

The image of the principal minor map for n x n-matrices is shown to be closed. In the 19th century, Nansen and Muir studied the implicitization problem of finding all relations among principal minors when n=4. We complete their partial results by constructing explicit polynomials of degree 12 that scheme-theoretically define this affine variety and also its projective closure in $\PP^{15}$. The latter is the main component in the singular locus of the 2 x 2 x 2 x 2-hyperdeterminant.

Characterizing principal minors of symmetric matrices via determinantal multiaffine polynomials

Here we consider the image of the principal minor map of symmetric matrices over an arbitrary unique factorization domain $R$. Set Theoretic Defining Equations of the Variety of Principal Minors of Symmetric Matrices

The variety of principal minors of $n\times n$ symmetric matrices, denoted $Z_{n}$, is invariant under the action of a group $G\subset \GL(2^{n})$ isomorphic to $\G$. We describe an irreducible $G$-module of degree $4$ polynomials constructed from Cayley's $2 \times 2 \times 2$ hyperdeterminant and show that it cuts out $Z_{n}$ set-theoretically. This solves the set-theoretic version of a conjecture of Holtz and Sturmfels. Standard techniques from representation theory and geometry are explored and developed for the proof of the conjecture and may be of use for studying similar $G$-varieties.

Bernstein-Sato polynomials for maximal minors and sub-maximal Pfaffians

Bernstein-Sato polynomials for general ideals vs. principal ideals

We show that given an ideal I generated by regular functions f_1,...,f_r on the smooth complex variety X, the Bernstein-Sato polynomial of I is equal to the reduced Bernstein-Sato polynomial of the function g=\sum_{i=1}^rf_iy_i on the product of X with an r-dimensional affine space. By combining this with results from [BMS], we relate invariants and properties of I to those of g. We also use the result on Bernstein-Sato polynomials to show that the Strong Monodromy Conjecture for Igusa zeta functions of principal ideals implies a similar statement for arbitrary ideals.

Local cohomology with support in ideals of maximal minors

Suppose that k is a field of characteristic zero, X is an r by s matrix of indeterminates, where r \leq s, and R = k[X] is the polynomial ring over k in the entries of X. We study the local cohomology modules H^i_I(R), where I is the ideal of R generated by the maximal minors of X. On eigenvalues of symmetric matrices with PSD principal submatrices

We investigate convexity properties of the set of eigenvalue tuples of $n\times n$ real symmetric matrices, whose all $k\times k$ (where $k\leq n$ is fixed) minors are positive semidefinite. It is proven that the set $λ(\mathcal{S}^{n,k})$ of eigenvalue vectors of all such matrices is star-shaped with respect to the nonnegative orthant $\mathbb{R}^n_{\geq 0}$ and not convex already when $(n,k)=(4,2)$.
