The UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey (UKIDSS) is the first of a new generation of infrared surveys. Here we combine the data from two UKIDSS components, the Large Area Survey (LAS) and the Galactic Cluster Survey (GCS), with 2MASS data to produce an infrared proper motion survey for low mass stars and brown dwarfs. In total we detect 267 low mass stars and brown dwarfs with significant proper motions. We recover all ten known single L dwarfs and the one known T dwarf above the 2MASS detection limit in our LAS survey area and identify eight additional new candidate L dwarfs. We also find one new candidate L dwarf in our GCS sample. Our sample also contains objects from eleven potential common proper motion binaries. Finally we test our proper motions and find that while the LAS objects have proper motions consistent with absolute proper motions, the GCS stars may have proper motions which are significantly under-estimated. This is due possibly to the bulk motion of some of the local astrometric reference stars used in the proper motion determination.
We report on the first ultracool dwarf discoveries from the UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey (UKIDSS) Large Area Survey Early Data Release (LAS EDR), in particular the discovery of T dwarfs which are fainter and more distant than those found using the 2MASS and SDSS surveys. We aim to show that our methodologies for searching the ~27 sq degs of the LAS EDR are successful for finding both L and T dwarfs $via$ cross-correlation with the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) DR4 release. While the area searched so far is small, the numbers of objects found shows great promise for near-future releases of …
We present predictions for the numbers of ultra--cool dwarfs in the Galactic disk population that could be detected by the WFCAM/UKIDSS Large Area Survey and Ultra Deep Survey. Simulated samples of objects are created with masses and ages drawn from different mass functions and birthrates. Each object is then given absolute magnitudes in different passbands based on empirically derived bolometric correction vs. effective temperature relationships (or model predictions for Y dwarfs). These are then combined with simulated space positions, velocities and photometric errors to yield observables s…
We present the discovery of two new late-T dwarfs identified in the UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey (UKIDSS) Galactic Clusters Survey (GCS) Data Release 2 (DR2). These T dwarfs are nearby old T dwarfs along the line of sight to star-forming regions and open clusters targeted by the UKIDSS GCS. They are found towards the Alpha Per cluster and Orion complex, respectively, from a search in 54 square degrees surveyed in five filters. Photometric candidates were picked up in two-colour diagrams, in a very similar manner to candidates extracted from the UKIDSS Large Area Survey (LAS) but taking advan…
A 2.5 x 100 degree region along the celestial equator (Stripe 82) has been imaged repeatedly from 1998 to 2005 by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. A new catalogue of ~4 million light-motion curves, together with over 200 derived statistical quantities, for objects in Stripe 82 brighter than r~21.5 has been constructed by combining these data by Bramich et al. (2007). This catalogue is at present the deepest catalogue of its kind. Extracting the ~130000 objects with highest signal-to-noise ratio proper motions, we build a reduced proper motion diagram to illustrate the scientific promise of the ca…
We present the results of a deep wide-field near-infrared survey of 12 square degrees of the Pleiades conducted as part of the UKIDSS Deep Infrared Sky Survey (UKIDSS) Galactic Cluster Survey (GCS). We have extracted over 340 high probability proper motion members down to 0.03 solar masses using a combination of UKIDSS photometry and proper motion measurements obtained by cross-correlating the GCS with data from the Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS), the Isaac Newton (INT) and the Canada-France-Hawai'i (CFHT) telescopes. Additionally, we have unearthed 73 new candidate brown dwarf members on t…
The UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey (UKIDSS) is the first of a new generation of hemispheric imaging projects to extend the work of the Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) by reaching three magnitudes deeper in YJHK imaging, to K=18.2 (5-sigma, Vega) over wide fields. Better complementing existing optical surveys such as the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), the resulting public imaging catalogues provide new photometry of rare object samples too faint to be reached previously. The first data release of UKIDSS has already surpassed 2MASS in terms of photons gathered, and using this new dataset we …
We present the discovery of a new extreme high proper motion object (3.5 arcsec/year) which we classify as an ultracool subdwarf with [M/H] = -0.5. It has a formal spectral type of sdM9 but also shows L-type features: while the VO bands are completely absent, it exhibits extremely strong TiO absorption in its optical spectrum. With a radial velocity of about -160 km/s and a rough distance estimate of 16--24 pc, it is likely one of the nearest halo members crossing the Solar neighbourhood with a heliocentric space velocity of (U,V,W)=(-244,-256,-100)+/-(32,77,6) km/s.
Recent discoveries from red optical proper motion and wide-field near-infrared surveys have uncovered a new population of ultracool subdwarfs -- metal-poor stars and brown dwarfs extending into the late-type M, L and possibly T spectral classes. These objects are among the first low-mass stars and brown dwarfs formed in the Galaxy, and are valuable tracers of metallicity effects in low-temperature atmospheres. Here we review the spectral, photometric, and kinematic properties of recent discoveries. We also examine L subdwarf classification, and discuss how a large, complete sample of substella…
The discovery of a low luminosity common proper motion companion to the white dwarf GD392 at a wide separation of $46''$ is reported. $BVRI$ photometry suggests a low temperature ($T_{\rm eff}\sim4000$ K) while $JHK$ data strongly indicate suppressed flux at all near infrared wavelengths. Thus, GD392B is one of the few white dwarfs to show significant collision induced absorption due to the presence of photospheric ${\rm {H_2}}$ and the first ultracool white dwarf detected as a companion to another star. Models fail to explain GD392B as a normal mass white dwarf. If correct, the cool companion…
Aims: I test the ejection scenario of formation of brown dwarfs and very low-mass stars through the detection of a very wide ultracool binary. Methods: LEHPM 494 (M6.0 +/- 1.0 V) and DENIS-P J0021.0-4244 (M9.5 +/- 0.5 V) are separated by 1.3 arcmin and are high proper motion co-moving ultracool stars. I have used six astrometric epochs spaced 22 years to confirm their common tangential velocity. Results: The angular separation between both low-mass stars keeps constant with an uncertainty less than 0.1 %. I have also derived their most probable heliocentric distance (23 +/- 2 pc), age interval…
We report the discovery of five very cool white dwarfs in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Four are ultracool, exhibiting strong collision induced absorption (CIA) from molecular hydrogen and are similar in color to the three previously known coolest white dwarfs, SDSS J1337+00, LHS 3250 and LHS 1402. The fifth, an ultracool white dwarf candidate, shows milder CIA flux suppression and has a color and spectral shape similar to WD 0346+246. All five new white dwarfs are faint (g > 18.9) and have significant proper motions. One of the new ultracool white dwarfs, SDSS J0947, appears to be in a…
Recent discoveries from red optical proper motion and wide-field near-infrared surveys have uncovered a new population of ultracool subdwarfs, metal-poor stars and brown dwarfs extending into the late-type M, L and possibly T spectral classes. These objects are among the first low-mass stars and brown dwarfs formed in the Galaxy, and are valuable tracers of metallicity effects in low-temperature atmospheres. Like solar metallicity late-type dwarfs, ultracool subdwarfs emit the majority of their emergent flux at infrared wavelengths. Here I discuss how Spitzer observations will contribute to th…
We describe the number counts and spatial distribution of 239 Distant Red Galaxies (DRGs), selected from the Early Data Release of the UKIDSS Ultra Deep Survey. The DRGs are identified by their very red infrared colours with (J-K)AB>1.3, selected over 0.62 sq degree to a 90% completeness limit of KAB~20.7. This is the first time a large sample of bright DRGs has been studied within a contiguous area, and we provide the first measurements of their number counts and clustering. The population shows strong angular clustering, intermediate between those of K-selected field galaxies and optical/inf…
We identify seven new ultracool white dwarfs discovered in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). The SDSS photometry, spectra, and proper motions are presented, and additional BVRI data are given for these and other previously discovered ultracool white dwarfs. The observed colors span a remarkably wide range, qualitatively similar to colors predicted by models for very cool white dwarfs. One of the new stars (SDSS J1251+44) exhibits strong collision-induced absorption (CIA) in its spectra, while the spectra and colors of the other six are consistent with mild CIA. Another of the new discoverie…
We report new nearby L and late-M dwarfs (d_phot <= 30 pc) discovered in our search for nearby ultracool dwarfs (I-J >= 3.0, later than M8.0) at low Galactic latitude (|b| < 15 degr) over 4,800 square degrees in the DENIS database. We used late-M (>=M8.0), L, and T dwarfs with accurate trigonometric parallaxes to calibrate the M_J versus I-J colour-luminosity relation. The resulting photometric distances have standard errors of ~15%, which we used to select candidates d_phot <= 30 pc. We measured proper motions from multi-epoch images found in the public archives ALADIN, DSS, 2MASS, DENIS, wit…
We report the discovery of twenty-one hitherto unknown bright southern ultracool dwarfs with spectral types in the range M7 to L5.5, together with new observations of a further three late M dwarfs previously confirmed. Three more objects are already identified in the literature as high proper motion stars;we derive their spectral types for the first time. All objects were selected from the 2MASS All Sky and SuperCOSMOS point source databases on the basis of their optical/near-infrared colours, $J$-band magnitudes and proper motions. Low resolution (R $\sim$ 1000) $JH$ spectroscopy with the ESO…
Surveys for nearby low-luminosity dwarfs tend to avoid the crowded regions of the Galactic Plane. We have devised near-infrared colour-magnitude and colour-colour selection criteria designed to identify late-type M and early-type L dwarfs within 12 parsecs of the Sun. We use those criteria to search for candidates within the regions of the Galactic Plane (|b| < 10^o) covered by the Second Incremental Release of data from the Two-Micron All Sky Survey. Detailed inspection of the available photographic images of the resulting 1299 candidates confirms only two as ultracool dwarfs. Both are known …
We present updated results of spectroscopic follow-up observations of a sample of 45 M dwarf candidates identified by Phan-Bao et al. (2003) based on the DENIS photometry and proper motion measurements. Forty one of these are nearby late-M dwarfs (d < 30 pc) with spectral types ranging from M5.0 to M8.5 computed from the spectral indices. One contaminant is probably an F-G main sequence star reddened by intervening dust and three stars that were not observed have previous classifications as M dwarfs in the literature. In this paper, we identify three M7.5, five M8.0, one M8.5 dwarf and confirm…
We report new spectroscopic results, obtained with UKIRT/CGS4, of a sample of 14 candidate ultracool dwarfs selected from the DENIS (Deep Near-Infrared Survey of the Southern Sky) database. A further object, selected from the 2MASS Second Incremental Release, was observed at a later epoch with the same instrument. Six objects are already known in the literature; we re-derive their properties. A further four prove to be very nearby (~10 pc) mid-to-late L-dwarfs, three unknown hitherto, two of which are almost certainly substellar. These findings increase the number of L-dwarfs known within ~10 …
We analyse the first publicly released deep field of the UKIDSS Deep eXtragalactic Survey (DXS) to identify candidate galaxy over-densities at z~1 across ~1 sq. degree in the ELAIS-N1 field. Using I-K, J-K and K-3.6um colours we identify and spectroscopically follow-up five candidate structures with Gemini/GMOS and confirm they are all true over-densities with between five and nineteen members each. Surprisingly, all five structures lie in a narrow redshift range at z=0.89+/-0.01, although they are spread across 30Mpc on the sky. We also find a more distant over-density at z=1.09 in one of the…
We construct a sample of extremely red objects (EROs) within the UKIDSS Ultra Deep Survey by combining the Early Data Release with optical data from the Subaru/XMM-Newton Deep Field. We find a total of 3715 objects over 2013 sq. arcmin with R-K>5.3 and K<=20.3, which is a higher surface density than found by previous studies. This is partly due to our ability to use a small aperture in which to measure colours, but is also the result of a genuine overdensity of objects compared to other fields. We separate our sample into passively-evolving and dusty star-forming galaxies using their RJK colou…
We present Gemini GMOS and Magellan LDSS-3 optical spectroscopy for seven ultracool subdwarf candidates color-selected from the Two Micron All Sky Survey. Five are identified as late-type subdwarfs, including the previously reported sdM9.5 SSSPM 1013-1356 and L subdwarf 2MASS 1626+3925, and a new sdM8.5 2MASS 0142+0523. 2MASS 1640+1231 exhibits spectral features intermediate between a late-type M dwarf and subdwarf, similar to the previously identified high proper motion star SSSPM 1444-2019, and we classify both sources as mild subdwarfs, d/sdM9. 2MASS 1227-0447 is a new ultracool extreme sub…
We present the results of a 9.3 square degree infrared (ZYJHK) survey in the Upper Scorpius association extracted from the UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey (UKIDSS) Galactic Cluster Survey Early Data Release. We have selected a total of 112 candidates from the ($Z-J$,$Z$) colour-magnitude diagram over the Z=12.5-20.5 magnitude range, corresponding to M = 0.25-0.01 Msun at an age of 5 Myr and a distance of 145 pc. Additional photometry in J and K filters revealed most of them as reddened stars, leaving 32 possible members. Among them, 15 have proper motion consistent with higher mass members from…
We report the discovery of two faint ultracool companions to the nearby (d~17.9 pc) young G2V star HD 130948 (HR 5534, HIP 72567) using the Hokupa'a adaptive optics instrument mounted on the Gemini North 8-meter telescope. Both objects have the same common proper motion as the primary star as seen over a 7 month baseline and have near-IR photometric colors that are consistent with an early-L classification. Near-IR spectra taken with the NIRSPEC AO instrument on the Keck II telescope reveal K I lines, FeH, and water bandheads. Based on these spectra, we determine that both objects have spectra…
The UKIDSS Galactic Plane Survey (GPS) is one of the five near infrared Public Legacy Surveys that are being undertaken by the UKIDSS consortium, using the Wide Field Camera on the United Kingdom Infrared Telescope. It is surveying 1868 sq.deg. of the northern and equatorial Galactic plane at Galactic latitudes -5<b<5 in the J, H and K filters and a ~200 sq.deg. area of the Taurus-Auriga-Perseus molecular cloud complex in these three filters and the 2.12 um (1-0) H_2 filter. It will provide data on ~2 billion sources. Here we describe the properties of the dataset and provide a user's guide fo…
We present the discovery of 2MASS J21321145+1341584AB as a closely separated (0.066") very low-mass field dwarf binary resolved in the near-infrared by the Keck II Telescope using laser guide star adaptive optics. Physical association is deduced from the angular proximity of the components and constraints on their common proper motion. We have obtained a near-infrared spectrum of the binary and find that it is best described by an L5+/-0.5 primary and an L7.5+/-0.5 secondary. Model-dependent masses predict that the two components straddle the hydrogen burning limit threshold with the primary l…
We present the activity and kinematics of a representative volume-limited (20 pc) sample of 152 late-M and L dwarfs (M7--L8) photometrically selected from the Two Micron All-Sky Survey (2MASS). Using new proper motion measurements and spectrophotometric distance estimates, we calculate tangential velocities. The sample has a mean tangential velocity of <V_tan> = 31.5 km/s, a velocity dispersion of sigma_tan = 20.7 km/s, and a maximum tangential velocity of V_tan = 138.8 km/s. These kinematic results are in excellent agreement with previous studies of ultracool dwarfs in the local solar neighbo…
The optical and infrared colors of L and T dwarfs are sensitive to cloud sedimentation and chemical equilibrium processes in their atmospheres. The i'-z' vs. J-K color-color diagram provides a window into diverse atmospheric processes mainly because different chemical processes govern each color, and cloud opacity largely affects J-K but not i'-z'. Using theoretical atmosphere models that include for the first time a self-consistent treatment of cloud formation, we present an interpretation of the i'-z' vs. J-K color trends of known L and T dwarfs. We find that the i'-z' color is extremely sen…
We present the discovery of the widest known ultracool dwarf - white dwarf binary. This binary is the first spectroscopically confirmed widely separated system from our target sample. We have used the 2MASS and SuperCOSMOS archives in the southern hemisphere, searching for very widely separated ultracool dwarf - white dwarf dwarf binaries, and find one common proper motion system, with a separation of 3650-5250AU at an estimated distance of 41-59pc, making it the widest known system of this type. Spectroscopy reveals 2MASS J0030-3740 is a DA white dwarf with Teff=7600+/-100K, log(g)=7.79-8.09 …
(abridged) We report the discovery of a very cool brown dwarf, ULAS J003402.77-005206.7 (ULAS J0034-00), identified in UKIDSS DR1. We provide optical, near-infrared, and mid-infrared photometry of the source, and two near-infrared spectra. Comparing the spectral energy distribution of ULAS J0034-00 to that of the T8 brown dwarf 2MASS J0415-09, the latest-type and coolest well-studied brown dwarf to date, with Teff~750 K, we find evidence that ULAS J0034-00 is significantly cooler. First, the measured values of the near-infrared absorption spectral indices imply a later classification, of T8.5.…
We report proper motion measurements for 427 late-type M, L and T dwarfs, 332 of which have been measured for the first time. Combining these new proper motions with previously published measurements yields a sample of 841 M7-T8 dwarfs. We combined parallax measurements or calculated spectrophotometric distances and computed tangential velocities for the entire sample. We find that kinematics for the full and volume-limited 20 pc samples are consistent with those expected for the Galactic thin disk, with no significant differences between late-type M, L, and T dwarfs. Applying an age-velocity …
We present the discovery of fifteen new T2.5-T7.5 dwarfs (with estimated distances between ~24-93pc, identified in the first three main data releases of the UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey. This brings the total number of T dwarfs discovered in the Large Area Survey (to date) to 28. These discoveries are confirmed by near infrared spectroscopy, from which we derive spectral types on the unified scheme of Burgasser et al. (2006). Seven of the new T dwarfs have spectral types of T2.5-T4.5, five have spectral types of T5-T5.5, one is a T6.5p, and two are T7-7.5. We assess spectral morphology and c…
(abridged) We describe the discovery of an extremely wide pair of low-mass stars with a common large proper motion and discuss their possible membership in a Galactic halo stream crossing the Solar neighbourhood. (...) The late-type (M7) dwarf SSSPM J2003$-$4433 and the ultracool subdwarf SSSPM J1930$-$4311 (sdM7) sharing the same very large proper motion of about 860 mas/yr were found in the same sky region with an angular separation of about 6\degr. From the comparison with other high proper motion catalogues we have estimated the probability of a chance alignment of the two new large proper…
We present the results of a proper motion survey of the Hyades to search for brown dwarfs, based on UKIDSS and 2MASS data. This survey covers ~275 square degrees to depth of K~15 mag, equivalent to a mass of 0.05 solar masses assuming a cluster age of 625 Myr. The discovery of 12 L dwarf Hyades members is reported. These members are also brown dwarfs, with masses between 0.05 < M < 0.075 solar masses. A high proportion of these L dwarfs appear to be photometric binaries.
We are currently undertaking a program aimed at identifying previously-unrecognised late-type dwarfs within 20 parsecs of the Sun. As a first step, we have cross-referenced Luyten's NLTT proper motion catalogue against the second incremental release of the 2MASS Point Source Catalogue, and use optical/infrared colours, derived by combining Luytens's m(r) estimates with 2MASS data, to identify candidate nearby stars. This paper describes the definition of a reference sample of 1245 stars, and presents a compilation of literature data for over one-third of the sample. Only 274 stars have trigono…
Astrometric observations of resolved binaries provide estimates of orbital periods and will eventually lead to measurement of dynamical masses. Only a few very low mass star and brown dwarf masses have been measured to date, and the mass-luminosity relation still needs to be calibrated. We have monitored 14 very low mass multiple systems for several years to confirm their multiplicity and, for those with a short period, derive accurate orbital parameters and dynamical mass estimates. We have used high spatial resolution images obtained at the Paranal, Lick and HST observatories to obtain astro…
We present the results of spectroscopic follow-up observations for a sample of 71 red objects with high proper motions in the range 0.08-1.14 arcsec/yr as detected using APM and SSS measurements of multi-epoch photographic Schmidt plates. Red objects were selected by combining the photographic BjRI magnitudes with 2MASS near-infrared JHKs magnitudes. Some 50 of the 71 spectroscopically classified objects turn out to be late-type (>M6) dwarfs and in more detail, the sample includes 35 ultracool dwarfs with spectral types between M8 and L2, some previously reported, as well as five M-type subdwa…
Precise measurements of the fundamental properties of low-mass stars and brown dwarfs are key to understanding the physics underlying their formation and evolution. While there has been great progress over the last decade in studying the bulk spectrophotometric properties of low-mass objects, direct determination of their masses, radii, and temperatures have been very sparse. Thus, theoretical predictions of low-mass evolution and ultracool atmospheres remain to be rigorously tested. The situation is alarming given that such models are widely used, from the determination of the low-mass end of…
A search of the Two Micron All Sky Survey and Sloan Digital Sky Survey reveals 36 previously unknown high proper motion objects with J<17. Their red-optical colors indicate that 27 are M dwarfs, 8 are early-type L dwarfs, and 1 is a late-type T dwarf. The L dwarfs have J-Ks colors near the extrema of known L dwarfs indicating that previous surveys for L dwarfs using color as a selection criterion may be biased. Followup near-infrared spectroscopy of 6 dwarfs confirm they are all late-type with spectral types ranging from M8 to T4. Spectroscopy also shows that some of the L dwarf spectra exhibi…
