(abridged) We describe the discovery of an extremely wide pair of low-mass stars with a common large proper motion and discuss their possible membership in a Galactic halo stream crossing the Solar neighbourhood. (...) The late-type (M7) dwarf SSSPM J2003$-$4433 and the ultracool subdwarf SSSPM J1930$-$4311 (sdM7) sharing the same very large proper motion of about 860 mas/yr were found in the same sky region with an angular separation of about 6\degr. From the comparison with other high proper motion catalogues we have estimated the probability of a chance alignment of the two new large proper motions to be less than 0.3%. From the individually estimated spectroscopic distances of about $38^{+10}_{-7}$ pc and $72^{+21}_{-16}$ pc, respectively for the M7 dwarf and the sdM7 subdwarf, and in view of the accurate agreement in their large proper motions we assume a common distance of about 50 pc and a projected physical separation of about 5 pc. The mean heliocentric space velocity of the pair $(U,V,W)=(-232, -170, +74)$ km/s, based on the correctness of the preliminary radial velocity measurement for only one of the components and on the assumption of a common distance and velocity vector, is typical of the Galactic halo population. The large separation and the different metallicities of dwarfs and subdwarfs make a common formation scenario as a wide binary (later disrupted) improbable, although there remains some uncertainty in the spectroscopic classification scheme of ultracool dwarfs/subdwarfs so that a dissolved binary origin cannot be fully ruled out yet. It seems more likely that this wide pair is part of an old halo stream. (...)
We analysed the fine structure of the phase space distribution function of nearby subdwarfs using data extracted from various catalogues. Applying a new search strategy based on Dekker's theory of galactic orbits, we found four overdensely populated regions in phase space. Three of them were correlated with previously known star streams: the Hyades-Pleiades and Hercules streams in the thin disk of the Milky Way and the Arcturus stream in the thick disk. In addition we find evidence for another stream in the thick disk, which resembles closely the Arcturus stream and probably has the same extra…
We have analyzed the phase space distribution of a sample of about 900 non--kinematically selected low metallicity stars in the solar vicinity. The stars primarily represent the thick disk and halo populations of the Milky Way. We aim to identify overdensely populated regions in phase space, which we interpret as signatures of star streams passing close to the Sun. The search was conducted in a space constructed from the angular momenta and eccentricities of the stellar orbits. Besides recovering all well known star streams in the thick disk, we isolated four statistically significant phase sp…
Standard cosmology predicts that dwarfs were the first galaxies to be formed in the Universe and that many of them merge afterwards to form bigger galaxies such as the Milky Way. This process would have left behind traces such as tidal debris or star streams in the outer halo. We report here the detection of a very low density stellar system at 50+/- 10 kpc from the Galactic center that could be related to the merger process. It could form part of the Sagittarius northern stream or, alternatively, could be the trace of a hitherto unknown dwarf galaxy. The dwarf galaxy in Sagittarius, the close…
Within the hierarchical framework for galaxy formation, merging and tidal interactions are expected to shape large galaxies to this day. While major mergers are quite rare at present, minor mergers and satellite disruptions - which result in stellar streams - should be common, and are indeed seen in both the Milky Way and the Andromeda Galaxy. As a pilot study, we have carried out ultra-deep, wide-field imaging of some spiral galaxies in the Local Volume, which has revealed external views of such stellar tidal streams at unprecedented detail, with data taken at small robotic telescopes (0.1-0.…
A study of the structural and scaling properties of the temperature distribution of the hot, X-ray emitting intra-cluster medium of galaxy clusters, and its dependence on dynamical state, can give insights into the physical processes governing the formation and evolution of structure. We analyse the X-ray temperature profiles from XMM-Newton observations of 15 nearby (z < 0.2) clusters, drawn from a statistically representative sample. The clusters cover a temperature range from 2.5 keV to 8.5 keV, and present a variety of X-ray morphologies. We derive accurate projected temperature profiles t…
To better understand our Galaxy, we investigate the pertinency of describing the sys tem of nearby disk stars in terms of a two-components Schwarzschild velocity distributio n.Using the proper motion and parallax information of Hipparcos database, we determine t he parameters characterizing the local stellar velocity field of a sample of 22000 disk stars. The sample we use is essentially the same as the one described by the criteria ad opted to study the LSR and the stream motion of the nearby stellar population
We present an extragalactic perspective of an extended stellar tidal stream wrapping around the edge-on, spiral galaxy NGC 5907. Our deep images reveal for the first time a large scale complex of arcing loops that is an excellent example of how a low-mass satellite accretion can produce an interwoven, rosette-like structure of debris dispersed in the halo of its host galaxy. The existence of this structure, which has probably formed and survived for several Gigayears, confirms that halos of spiral galaxies in the Local Universe may still contain a significant number of galactic fossils from th…
We examine the Fisher-Tully cz<1000 km/s galaxy sample to determine whether it is a complete and representative sample of all galaxy types, including low surface brightness populations, as has been recently claimed. We find that the sample is progressively more incomplete for galaxies with (1) smaller physical diameters at a fixed isophote and (2) lower HI masses. This is likely to lead to a significant undercounting of nearby gas-rich low surface brightness galaxies. However, through comparisons to other samples we can understand how the nearby galaxy counts need to be corrected, and we see s…
Interactions between galaxies are common and are an important factor in determining their physical properties such as position along the Hubble sequence and star-formation rate. There are many possible galaxy interaction mechanisms, including merging, ram-pressure stripping, gas compression, gravitational interaction and cluster tides. The relative importance of these mechanisms is often not clear, as their strength depends on poorly known parameters such as the density, extent and nature of the massive dark halos that surround galaxies. A nearby example of a galaxy interaction where the mecha…
I use the statistical properties of 4588 nearby halo stars to show that if the local stellar halo is composed of cold streams from disrupted dwarf satellites as is predicted by popular cosmologies, then at 95% confidence there are at least 1350 such streams. Moreover, no stream can contain more than 2.3% of the local stars, while average streams must contain less than 0.08%.
What can we learn from the somewhat arduous study of old stellar populations in nearby galaxies? Unless the nearby universe is subtly anomalous, it should contain a relatively normal selection of galaxies whose histories are representative of field galaxies in general throughout the Universe. We can therefore take advantage of our ability to resolve local galaxies into individual stars to directly, and accurately, measure star formation histories. The star formation histories are determined from numerical models, based on stellar evolution tracks, of colour-magnitude diagrams. The most accurat…
We study the expansion of the nearby Universe using a sample of Type Ia supernovae at redshifts below 0.08. These supernovae allow peculiar velocities to be measured at unprecedented precision. We have investigated in detail the possibility of a varying Hubble constant with redshift and found no evidence of a monopole term for the nearby Universe. A large scale streaming motion is found at an amplitude of about $340^{63}_{-71}$ km/sec, aligned in the direction of $(l_0, b_0) = (312^{\rm o}.0^{13.5}_{-7.4}, 25^{\rm o}.7^{8.0}_{-9.2})$, which is close to the direction of the center of Shapley su…
A volume limited and absolute magnitude limited sample of A-F type dwarfs within 125 parsecs of the Sun is searched for inhomogeneities in the density- velocity space, expecting signatures of the cluster evaporation, phase mixing and possible disc heating mechanisms. A 3-D wavelet analysis is used to extract inhomogeneities, both in the density and velocity distributions. Thus, a real picture of the phase space is produced. Not only are some clusters and streams detected, but the fraction of clumped stars can be measured. By estimating individual stellar ages one can relate the streams and clu…
In this contribution we discuss the expected properties of our halo if our Galaxy had been built from mergers of smaller systems. Using both analytic arguments and high-resolution simulations, we find that the Galactic halo in the Solar neighbourhood should have a smooth spatial distribution and that its stellar velocity ellipsoid should consist of several hundred kinematically cold streams, relicts from the different merging events. We also discuss observational evidence which supports this hierarchical picture: two stellar streams originating in the same system that probably fell onto the Mi…
Future astrometric satellites, such as SIM (NASA's Space Interferometric Mission) and GAIA (ESA's Global Astrometric Interferometer for Astrophysics), hold the promise of mapping out the detailed phase space structure of the Galactic halo by providing unprecedented annual proper motion and parallax of $1-10μ$as astrometric accuracy. Here we show that proper motions of hundred or so giant branch stars in a tidal debris torn from a small satellite (a $10^{5-7}L_\odot$ Galactic dwarf galaxy or globular cluster) in the halo is sensitive to the current Galactic potential and its past evolution. We …
We report on the detection in Sloan Digital Sky Survey data of a 63 degree-long tidal stream of stars, extending from Ursa Major to Cancer. The stream has no obvious association with the orbit of any known cluster or galaxy. The contrast of the detected stream is greatest when using a star count filter that is matched to the color-magnitude distribution of stars in M 13, which suggests that the stars making up the stream are old and metal poor. The visible portion of the stream is very narrow and about 8.5 kpc above the Galactic disk, suggesting that the progenitor is or was a globular cluster…
Unless the nearby universe is subtly anomalous, it should contain a relatively normal selection of galaxies whose histories are representative of field galaxies in general throughout the Universe. We can therefore take advantage of our ability to resolve the nearby galaxies into individual stars to directly, and accurately, measure star formation histories. The star formation histories are determined from model-fitting analysis, based on stellar evolution tracks, of colour-magnitude diagrams. The most accurate information on star formation rates extending back to the earliest epoches can be ob…
Two frequency observations, mainly at 1.4 and 5 GHz from the VLA, have been used to study spectral variations along the lobes of some nearby low luminosity radio galaxies that constitute a representative sample selected from the B2 catalogue. The variations of the spectral index have been interpreted as being due to synchrotron and inverse Compton losses and characteristic spectral ages are deduced for the relativistic electrons. The radiative ages are in the range of several 10^7 years. These ages correlate well with the source sizes. They also appear to be consistent with dynamical ages dete…
The last 10-20 years has seen a profound shift in views of how the Galaxy's halo formed. The idea of a monolithic early collapse of a single system (Eggen, Lynden-Bell and Sandage 1962) has been challenged by observations at high redshift and by cosmological models of structure formation. These findings imply that we should see clear evidence of hierarchical formation processes in nearby galaxies. Recent studies of our Galaxy, made possible by large-scale CCD surveys such as the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), have begun to reveal tantalizing evidence of substructure in the outer halo. We rev…
Nearby masses can have a high probability of lensing stars in a distant background field. High-probability lensing, or mesolensing, can therefore be used to dramatically increase our knowledge of dark and dim objects in the solar neighborhood, where it can discover and study members of the local dark population (free-floating planets, low-mass dwarfs, white dwarfs, neutron stars, and stellar mass black holes). We can measure the mass and transverse velocity of those objects discovered (or already known), and determine whether or not they are in binaries with dim companions. We explore these an…
We present the SAO 6m telescope spectroscopy of a blue compact galaxy (BCG) HS 2134+0400 discovered in frame of the dedicated Hamburg/SAO survey for Low Metallicity BCGs (HSS-LM). Its very low abundance of oxygen (12+log(O/H) = 7.44), as well as other heavy elements (S, N, Ne, Ar), assigns this dwarf galaxy to the group of BCGs with the lowest metal content. There are only eight that low metallicity among several thousand known BCGs in the nearby Universe. The abundance ratios for the heavy elements (S/O, Ne/O, N/O, and Ar/O) are well consistent with the typical values of other very metal-poor…
A set of 41 nearby stars (closer than 25 pc) is investigated which have very wide binary and common proper motion (CPM) companions at projected separations between 1000 and $200 000$ AU. These companions are identified by astrometric positions and proper motions from the NOMAD catalog. Based mainly on measures of chromospheric and X-ray activity, age estimation is obtained for most of 85 identified companions. Color -- absolute magnitude diagrams are constructed to test if CPM companions are physically related to the primary nearby stars and have the same age. Our carefully selected sample inc…
