We show that spin-flip rotation in a semiconductor quantum wire, caused by the Rashba and the Dresselhaus interactions (both of arbitrary strengths), can be suppressed by dint of an in-plane magnetic field. We found a new type of symmetry, which arises at a particular set of intensity and orientation of the magnetic field and explains this suppression. Based on our findings, we propose a transport experiment to measure the strengths of the Rashba and the Dresselhaus interactions.
We investigate the impact of electrostatics on the proximity effect between a magnetic insulator and a semiconductor wire in semiconductor-superconductor-magnetic insulator hybrid structures. By performing self-consistent Schr$\ddot{\rm o}$dinger-Poisson calculations using an effective model of the hybrid system, we find that large effective Zeeman fields consistent with the emergence of topological superconductivity emerge within a large parameter window in wires with overlapping layers of magnetic insulator and superconductor, but not in non-overlapping structures. We show that this behavior…
We study Majorana zero modes properties in cylindrical cross-section semiconductor quantum wires based on the $k \cdot p$ theory and a discretized lattice model. Within this model, the influence of disorder potentials in the wire and amplitude and phase fluctuations of the superconducting order-parameter are discussed. We find that for typical wire geometries, pairing potentials, and spin-orbit coupling strengths, coupling between quasi-one-dimensional sub-bands is weak, low-energy quasiparticles near the Fermi energy are nearly completely spin-polarized, and the number of electrons in the act…
Recent numerical results for ionization of quantum dots by periodic electric field during the electric dipole spin resonance are compared with known analytical approaches. It is found that in finite-length quantum wires the numerical ionization rate is slower than the analytical one, especially for low driving field when the confinement potential strongly affects the dynamics. Still, the analytically predicted ionization times are in satisfactory correspondence with mean energy threshold times when the energy crosses the border between localized and continuum states.
We apply density functional theory, in the local density approximation, to a quasi-one-dimensional electron gas in order to quantify the effect of Coulomb and correlation effects in modulating, and therefore patterning, the charge density distribution. Our calculations are presented specifically for surface-gate-defined quasi-one-dimensional quantum wires in a GaAs-AlGaAs heterostructure but we expect our results to apply more generally for other low dimensional semiconductor systems. We show that at high densities with strong confinement, screening of electrons in the direction transverse to …
Electrostatic charges placed near the interface between ordinary and topological insulators induce magnetic fields, through the so-called topological magnetoelectric effect. Here, we present a numerical implementation of the associated Maxwell equations. The resulting model is simple, fast and quantitatively as accurate as the image charge method, but with the advantage of providing easy access to elaborate geometries when pursuing specific effects. The model is used to study how magnetoelectric fields are influenced by the dimensions and the shape of the most common semiconductor nanostructur…
Within the effective-mass approximation, we theoretically investigated the electronic and transport properties of 2D semiconductor quantum wires (QWs) with anisotropic effective masses and different orientations with respect to the anisotropic axis. The energy levels in the absence and presence of an external magnetic field are analytically calculated, showing: (i) a strong dependence on the spacing of energy levels related to the alignment QW angle and the anisotropy axis; and (ii) for non-null magnetic field, the quantum Hall edge states are significantly affected by the edge orientation. Mo…
The dispersion law of plasmons running along thin wires with radius $a$ is known to be practically linear. We show that in a wire with a dielectric constant $κ$ much larger than that of its environment $κ_e$, such dispersion law crosses over to a dispersionless three-dimensional-like law when the plasmon wavelength becomes shorter than the length $(a/2) \sqrt{(κ/κ_e)\ln(κ/2κ_e)}$ at which the electric field lines of a point charge exit from the wire to the environment. This happens both in trivial semiconductor wires and wires of three-dimensional topological insulators.
Novel bis(biphenyl)-capped polyynes have been synthesized to investigate the modulation of the electronic and optical properties of sp-hybridized carbon-atom wires (CAWs) capped with π-conjugated $sp^{2}$ endgroups. Raman and Surface Enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) investigation of these systems and Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations reveal structural changes from polyyne-like with alternating single-triple bonds towards cumulene-like with more equalized bonds as a consequence of the charge transfer occurring when wires interact with metallic nanoparticles. While polyynes have sem…
Localized states in a semiconductor quantum ring with a tangent wire
我们扩展了一种特殊的局域态被困在交叉点由于几何限制,首先提出了一个三终端开口T形结构[欧洲。Phys. Lett.

Spin-3/2 physics of semiconductor hole nanowires: Valence-band mixing and tunable interplay between bulk-material and orbital bound-state spin splittings
We consider a single electron confined within a quantum wire in a system of two electrostatically-induced QDs defined by nearby gates. The time-varying electric field, of single GHz frequency, perpendicular to the quantum wire, is used to induce the Rashba coupling and enable spin-dependent resonant tunneling of the electron between two adjacent potential wells with fidelity over 99.5%. This effect can be used for the high fidelity all-electrical electron-spin initialization or readout in the spin-based quantum computer. In contrast to other spin initialization methods, our technique can be pe…
To close or not to close: the fate of the superconducting gap across the topological quantum phase transition in Majorana-carrying semiconductor nanowires
We predict that conduction electrons in a semiconductor film containing a centered square array of metal nanowires normal to its plane are bound in quantum states around the central wires, if a positive bias voltage is applied between the wires at the square vertices and these latter. We obtain and discuss the eigenenergies and eigenfunctions of two models with different dimensions. The results show that the eigenstates can be grouped into different shells. The energy differences between the shells is typically a few tens of meV, which corresponds to frequencies of emitted or absorbed photons …
We study the effects of spin-orbit coupling on the magnetoconductivity in diffusive cylindrical semiconductor nanowires. Following up on our former study on tubular semiconductor nanowires, we focus in this paper on nanowire systems where no surface accumulation layer is formed but instead the electron wave function extends over the entire cross section. We take into account the Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling resulting from a zinc-blende lattice and the Rashba spin-orbit coupling, which is controlled by a lateral gate electrode. The spin relaxation rate due to Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling …
We experimentally demonstrate ultralong spin lifetimes of electrons in the one-dimensional (1D) quantum limit of semiconductor nanowires. Optically probing single wires of different diameters reveals an increase in the spin relaxation time by orders of magnitude as the electrons become increasingly confined until only a single 1D subband is populated. We find the observed spin lifetimes of more than $200\,\textrm{ns}$ to result from the robustness of 1D electrons against major spin relaxation mechanisms, highlighting the promising potential of these wires for long-range transport of coherent s…
Ionized Impurity and Surface Roughness Scattering Rates of Electrons in Semiconductor Structures with One-Dimensional Electron Gas and Broadened Energy Levels
We propose a non-destructive means of characterizing a semiconductor wafer via measuring parameters of an induced quantum dot on the material system of interest with a separate probe chip that can also house the measurement circuitry. We show that a single wire can create the dot, determine if an electron is present, and be used to measure critical device parameters. Adding more wires enables more complicated (potentially multi-dot) systems and measurements. As one application for this concept we consider silicon metal-oxide-semiconductor and silicon/silicon-germanium quantum dot qubits releva…
We propose a versatile platform to investigate the existence of Majorana bound states (MBSs) and their non-Abelian statistics through braiding. This implementation combines a two-dimensional electron gas formed in a semiconductor quantum well grown on the surface of an s-wave superconductor with a nearby array of magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs). The underlying magnetic textures produced by MTJs provide highly controllable topological phase transitions to confine and transport MBSs in two dimensions, overcoming the requirement for a network of wires. Obtained scaling relations confirm that var…
Superconductor proximitized one-dimensional semiconductor nanowires with strong spin-orbit interaction (SOI) are at this time the most promising candidates for the realization of topological quantum information processing. In current experiments the SOI originates predominantly from extrinsic fields, induced by finite size effects and applied gate voltages. The dependence of the topological transition in these devices on microscopic details makes scaling to a large number of devices difficult unless a material with dominant intrinsic bulk SOI is used. Here we show that wires made of certain or…
We study nonequilibrium transport in various open quantum systems whose systems and leads/baths are made of topological superconductors (TSs), semiconductors, and metals. Using quantum Langevin equations and Green's function method, we derive exact expressions for steady-state electrical, thermal, and spin current at the junctions between a system and leads. We validate these current expressions by comparing them with the results from direct time-evolution simulations. We then show how an electrical current injected in TS wires divides into two parts carried by single electronic excitations an…
