The paper deals with a problem of interaction between hydrodynamics and mechanics of nonlinear elastic bodies. The existence question for two-dimensional symmetric steady waves travelling on the surface of a deep ocean beneath a heavy elastic membrane is analyzed as a problem in bifurcation theory. The behaviour of the two-dimensional cross-section of the membrane is modelled as a thin (unshearable), heavy, hyperelastic Cosserat rod, following Antman's elasticity theory, and the fluid beneath is supposed to be in steady 2D irrotational motion under gravity. Assuming that gravity and the density of the undeformed membrane are prescribed, the free parameters of the problem are the speed of the wave and drift velocity of the membrane.
The analysis relies upon a conformal formulation of the hydro-elastic problem developed in previous papers; the basic tool for the study of the bifurcation picture is the implicit function theorem, under some non-resonance assumptions.
The most interesting part of the final result is the existence of a symmetry-breaking 'third sheet' of solutions, which bifurcates from primary sheets, and is a hydro-elastic analogue of the phenomenon known as 'Wilton ripples' in the surface tension case.
We consider doubly-periodic travelling waves at the surface of an infinitely deep perfect fluid, only subjected to gravity $g$ and resulting from the nonlinear interaction of two simply periodic travelling waves making an angle $2θ$ between them. \newline Denoting by $μ=gL/c^{2}$ the dimensionless bifurcation parameter ($L$ is the wave length along the direction of the travelling wave and $c$ is the velocity of the wave), bifurcation occurs for $μ=\cos θ$. For non-resonant cases, we first give a large family of formal three-dimensional gravity travelling waves, in the form of an expansion in p…
We construct large families of two-dimensional travelling water waves propagating under the influence of gravity in a flow of constant vorticity over a flat bed. A Riemann-Hilbert problem approach is used to recast the governing equations as a one-dimensional elliptic pseudo-differential equation with a scalar constraint. The structural properties of this formulation, which arises as the Euler-Lagrange equation of an energy functional, enable us to develop a theory of analytic global bifurcation.
We investigate numerically a model consisting in a kinetic equation for the biased motion of bacteria following a run-and-tumble process, coupled with two reaction-diffusion equations for chemical signals. This model exhibits asymptotic propagation at a constant speed. In particular, it admits travelling wave solutions. To capture this propagation, we propose a well-balanced numerical scheme based on Case's elementary solutions for the kinetic equation, and L-splines for the parabolic equations. We use this scheme to explore the Cauchy problem for various parameters. Some examples far from the…
We consider three-dimensional inviscid irrotational flow in a two layer fluid under the effects of gravity and surface tension, where the upper fluid is bounded above by a rigid lid and the lower fluid is bounded below by a flat bottom. We use a spatial dynamics approach and formulate the steady Euler equations as an infinite-dimensional Hamiltonian system, where an unbounded spatial direction $x$ is considered as a time-like coordinate. In addition we consider wave motions that are periodic in another direction $z$. By analyzing the dispersion relation we detect several bifurcation scenarios,…
We consider the non-local formulation of the Degasperis-Procesi equation $u_t+uu_x+L(\frac{3}{2}u^2)_x=0$, where $L$ is the non-local Fourier multiplier operator with symbol $m(ξ)=(1+ξ^2)^{-1}$. We show that all $L^\infty$, pointwise travelling-wave solutions are bounded above by the wave-speed and that if the maximal height is achieved they are peaked at those points, otherwise they are smooth. For sufficiently small periods we find the highest, peaked, travelling-wave solution as the limiting case at the end of the main bifurcation curve of $P$-periodic solutions. The results imply that the …
We study the bifurcation of periodic travelling waves of the capillary-gravity Whitham equation. This is a nonlinear pseudo-differential equation that combines the canonical shallow water nonlinearity with the exact (unidirectional) dispersion for finite-depth capillary-gravity waves. Starting from the line of zero solutions, we give a complete description of all small periodic solutions, unimodal as well bimodal, using simple and double bifurcation via Lyapunov--Schmidt reductions. Included in this study is the resonant case when one wavenumber divides another. Some bifurcation formulas are s…
In this paper we use bifurcation methods to construct a new family of solutions of the binormal flow, also known as the vortex filament equation, which do not change their form. Our examples are complementary to those obtained by S. Kida in 1981, and therefore they are also related, thanks to the so-called Hasimoto transformation, to travelling wave solutions of the 1d cubic non-linear Schrödinger equation.
When the steady states at infinity become unstable through a pattern forming bifurcation, a travelling wave may bifurcate into a modulated front which is time-periodic in a moving frame. This scenario has been studied by B.Sandstede and A.Scheel for a class of reaction-diffusion systems on the real line. Under general assumptions, they showed that the modulated fronts exist and are spectrally stable near the bifurcation point. Here we consider a model problem for which we can prove the nonlinear stability of these solutions with respect to small localized perturbations. This result does not fo…
Choosing $κ$ (horizontal ordinate of the saddle point associated to the homoclinic orbit) as bifurcation parameter, bifurcations of the travelling wave solutions is studied in a perturbed $(1 + 1)$-dimensional dispersive long wave equation. The solitary wave solution exists at a suitable wave speed $c$ for the bifurcation parameter $κ\in (0,1-\frac{\sqrt3}{3})\cup (1+\frac{\sqrt3}{3},2)$, while the kink and anti-kink wave solutions exist at a unique wave speed $c^*=\sqrt{15}/3$ for $κ=0$ or $κ=2$. The methods are based on the geometric singular perturbation (GSP, for short) approach, Melnikov …
We prove the existence of highest, cusped, periodic travelling-wave solutions with exact and optimal $ α$-Hölder continuity in a class of fractional negative-order dispersive equations of the form \begin{equation*} u_t + (| \mathrm{D} |^{- α} u + n(u) )_x = 0 \end{equation*} for every $ α\in (0, 1) $ with homogeneous Fourier multiplier $ | \mathrm{D} |^{ - α} $. We tackle nonlinearities $ n(u) $ of the type $ | u |^p $ or $ u | u |^{p - 1} $ for all real $ p > 1 $, and show that when $ n $ is odd, the waves also feature antisymmetry and thus contain inverted cusps. Tools involve detailed point…
In order to understand the nonlinear stability of many types of time-periodic travelling waves on unbounded domains, one must overcome two main difficulties: the presence of embedded neutral eigenvalues and the time-dependence of the associated linear operator. This problem is studied in the context of time-periodic Lax shocks in systems of viscous conservation laws. Using spatial dynamics and a decomposition into separate Floquet eigenmodes, it is shown that the linear evolution for the time-dependent operator can be represented using a contour integral similar to that of the standard time-in…
