For a locally compact group $G$, the measure convolution algebra $M(G)$ carries a natural coproduct. In previous work, we showed that the canonical predual $C_0(G)$ of $M(G)$ is the unique predual which makes both the product and the coproduct on $M(G)$ weak$^*$-continuous. Given a discrete semigroup $S$, the convolution algebra $\ell^1(S)$ also carries a coproduct. In this paper we examine preduals for $\ell^1(S)$ making both the product and the coproduct weak$^*$-continuous. Under certain conditions on $S$, we show that $\ell^1(S)$ has a unique such predual. Such $S$ include the free semigroup on finitely many generators. In general, however, this need not be the case even for quite simple semigroups and we construct uncountably many such preduals on $\ell^1(S)$ when $S$ is either $\mathbb Z_+\times\mathbb Z$ or $(\mathbb N,\cdot)$.
We show that every free semigroup algebras has a (strongly) unique Banach space predual. We also provide a new simpler proof that a weak*-closed unital operator operator algebra containing a weak* dense subalgebra of compact operators has a unique Banach space predual.
The Banach space $\ell_1(\Z)$ admits many non-isomorphic preduals, for example, $C(K)$ for any compact countable space $K$, along with many more exotic Banach spaces. In this paper, we impose an extra condition: the predual must make the bilateral shift on $\ell_1(\Z)$ weak$^*$-continuous. This is equivalent to making the natural convolution multiplication on $\ell_1(\Z)$ separately weak*-continuous and so turning $\ell_1(\Z)$ into a dual Banach algebra. We call such preduals \emph{shift-invariant}. It is known that the only shift-invariant predual arising from the standard duality between $C_…
Let L_1 be the predual of a von Neumann algebra with a finite faithful normal trace. We show that a bounded sequence in L_1 converges to 0 in measure if and only if each of its subsequences admits another subsequence which converges to 0 in norm or spans $l^1$ "almost isometrically". Furthermore we give a quantitative version of an essentially known result concerning the perturbation of a sequence spanning $l^1$ isomorphically in the dual of a C$^*$-algebra.
We prove that the predual of any von Neumann algebra is $1$-Plichko, i.e., it has a countably $1$-norming Markushevich basis. This answers a question of the third author who proved the same for preduals of semifinite von Neumann algebras. As a corollary we obtain an easier proof of a result of U.~Haagerup that the predual of any von Neumann algebra enjoys the separable complementation property. We further prove that the self-adjoint part of the predual is $1$-Plichko as well.
In this paper, among other things, we study those conditions under which the weighted semigroup algebra $\ell^1(S,ω)$ is a dual Banach algebra with respect to predual $c_0(S)$. Some useful examples, illustrating the results, are also included.
We study the Hopf structure of a class of dual operator algebras corresponding to certain semigroups. This class of algebras arises in dilation theory, and includes the noncommutative analytic Toeplitz algebra and the multiplier algebra of the Drury-Arveson space, which correspond to the free semigroup and the free commutative semigroup respectively. The preduals of the algebras in this class naturally form Hopf (convolution) algebras. The original algebras and their preduals form (non-self-adjoint) dual Hopf algebras in the sense of Effros and Ruan. We study these algebras from this perspecti…
We prove that for every JBW$^*$-triple $E$ of rank $>1$, the symmetric part of its predual reduces to zero. Consequently, the predual of every infinite dimensional von Neumann algebra $A$ satisfies the linear biholomorphic property, that is, the symmetric part of $A_*$ is zero. This solves a problem posed by M. Neal and B. Russo in [Mathematica Scandinavica, to appear]
Let $A$ be a dual Banach algebra with predual $A_\ast$ and consider the following assertions: (A) $A$ is Connes-amenable; (B) $A$ has a normal, virtual diagonal; (C) $A_\ast$ is an injective $A$-bimodule. For general $A$, all that is known is that (B) implies (A) whereas, for von Neumann algebras, (A), (B), and (C) are equivalent. We show that (C) always implies (B) whereas the converse is false for $A = M(G)$ where $G$ is an infinite, locally compact group. Furthermore, we present partial solutions towards a characterization of (A) and (B) for $B(G)$ in terms of $G$: For amenable, discrete $G…
We prove that the predual of any JBW$^*$-algebra is a complex $1$-Plichko space and the predual of any JBW-algebra is a real $1$-Plichko space. I.e., any such space has a countably $1$-norming Markushevich basis, or, equivalently, a commutative $1$-projectional skeleton. This extends recent results of the authors who proved the same for preduals of von Neumann algebras and their self-adjoint parts. However, the more general setting of Jordan algebras turned to be much more complicated. We use in the proof a set-theoretical method of elementary submodels. As a byproduct we obtain a result on am…
We prove, among other results, that three standard measures of weak non-compactness coincide in preduals of JBW$^*$-triples. This result is new even for preduals of von Neumann algebras. We further provide a characterization of JBW$^*$-triples with strongly WCG predual and describe the order of seminorms defining the strong$^*$ topology. As a byproduct we improve a characterization of weakly compact subsets of a JBW$^*$-triple predual, providing so a proof for a conjecture, open for almost eighteen years, on weakly compact operators from a JB$^*$-triple into a complex Banach space.
A Banach space $X$ is said to have the Daugavet property if every rank-one operator $T:X\longrightarrow X$ satisfies $\|Id + T\| = 1 + \|T\|$. We give geometric characterizations of this property in the settings of $C^*$-algebras, $JB^*$-triples and their isometric preduals. We also show that, in these settings, the Daugavet property passes to ultrapowers, and thus, it is equivalent to an stronger property called the uniform Daugavet property.
Let $M$ be a von Neumann algebra and let $M_\star$ be its (unique) predual. We study when for every $φ\in M_\star$ there exists $ψ\in M_\star$ solving the equation $\|φ\pm ψ\|=\|φ\|=\|ψ\|$. This is the case when $M$ does not contain type I nor type III$_1$ factors as direct summands and it is false at least for the unique hyperfinite type III$_1$ factor. We also characterize this property in terms of the existence of centrally symmetric curves in the unit sphere of $M_\star$ of length 4. An approximate result valid for all diffuse von Neumann algebras allows to show that the equation has solut…
We propose a new definition for a Banach algebra $\mathfrak{A}$ to be extremely non-Arens regular, namely that the quotient $\mathfrak{A}^\ast/\mathscr{WAP}(\mathfrak{A})$ of $\mathfrak{A}^\ast$ with the space of its weakly almost periodic elements contains an isomorphic copy of $\mathfrak{A}^\ast.$ This definition is simpler and formally stronger than the original one introduced by Granirer in the nineties. We then identify sufficient conditions for the predual $\mathfrak{V}_\ast$ of a von Neumann algebra $\mathfrak{V}$ to be extremely non-Arens regular in this new sense. These conditions are…
We prove a Kadec-Pelczyński dichotomy-type theorem for bounded sequences in the predual of a JBW*-algebra, showing that for each bounded sequence $(ϕ_n)$ in the predual of a JBW$^*$-algebra $M$, there exist a subsequence $(ϕ_{τ(n)})$, and a sequence of mutually orthogonal projections $(p_n)$ in $M$ such that: [$(a)$] the set ${ϕ_{τ(n)} - ϕ_{τ(n)} P_{2} (p_n): n\in \mathbb{N}}$ is relatively weakly compact, $ϕ_{τ(n)}=ξ_n+ψ_n$, with $ξ_n := ϕ_{τ(n)} - ϕ_{τ(n)} P_{2} (p_n)$, and $ψ_n := ϕ_{τ(n)} P_{2} (p_n),$ {\rm(}$ξ_n Q(p_n)= 0$ and $ψ_n Q(p_n)^2 = ψ_n${\rm)}, for every $n$.
We investigate possible preduals of the measure algebra $M(G)$ of a locally compact group and the Fourier algebra $A(G)$ of a separable compact group. Both of these algebras are canonically dual spaces and the canonical preduals make the multiplication separately weak$^*$-continuous so that these algebras are dual Banach algebras. In this paper we find additional conditions under which the preduals $C_0(G)$ of $M(G)$ and $C^*(G)$ of $A(G)$ are uniquely determined. In both cases we consider a natural coassociative multiplication and show that the canonical predual gives rise to the unique weak$…
We prove that the predual, $M_*$, of a JBW$^*$-triple $M$ is a 1-Plichko space (i.e. it admits a countably 1-norming Markushevich basis or, equivalently, it has a commutative 1-projectional skeleton), and obtain a natural description of the $Σ$-subspace of $M$. This generalizes and improves similar results for von Neumann algebras and JBW$^*$-algebras. Consequently, dual spaces of JB$^*$-triples also are 1-Plichko spaces. We also show that $M_*$ is weakly Lindelöf determined if and only if $M$ is $σ$-finite if and only if $M_*$ is weakly compactly generated. Moreover, contrary to the proof for…
We identify the exposed points of the unit ball of the dual space of the ball algebra. As a corollary, we show that the predual of $H^\infty(\mathbb{B}_d)$ has no extreme points in its unit ball.
The unique predual $M_\star/A_\perp$ of a non-commutative $H^\infty$-algebra $A = H^\infty(M,τ)$ is investigated. In particular, we will prove the liftability property of weakly relatively compact subsets in $M_\star/A_\perp$ to $M_\star$.
Let $M$, $N$, $R$ be $W^{*}$--algebras, with $R$ unitally embedded in both $M$ and $N$. by using Reduction Theory, we extend the previous description of the $W^{*}$--tensor product $M\bar\otimes_{R}N$ over the common $W^{*}$--subalgebra $R$ and its predual $(M\bar\otimes_{R}N)_{*}$ to the $σ$--finite case.
We investigate the notion of Connes-amenability for dual Banach algebras, as introduced by Runde, for bidual algebras and weighted semigroup algebras. We provide some simplifications to the notion of a $σWC$-virtual diagonal, as introduced by Runde, especially in the case of the bidual of an Arens regular Banach algebra. We apply these results to discrete, weighted, weakly cancellative semigroup algebras, showing that these behave in the same way as C$^*$-algebras with regards Connes-amenability of the bidual algebra. We also show that for each one of these cancellative semigroup algebras $l^1…
Two normal functionals on a JBW$^*$-triple are known to be orthogonal if and only if they are $L$-orthogonal (meaning that they span an isometric copy of $\ell_1(2)$). This is shown to be stable under small norm perturbations in the following sense: if the linear span of the two functionals is isometric up to $δ>0$ to $\ell_1(2)$, then the functionals are less far (in norm) than $\eps>0$ from two orthogonal functionals, where $\eps\to0$ as $δ\to0$. Analogous statements for finitely and even infinitely many functionals hold as well. And so does a corresponding statement for non-normal functiona…
In this paper, we investigate the notion of approximate biprojectivity for semigroup algebras and for some Banach algebras related to semigroup algebras. We show that $\ell^{1}(S)$ is approximately biprojective if and only if $\ell^{1}(S)$ is biprojective, provided that $S$ is a uniformly locally finite inverse semigroup. Also for a Clifford semigroup $S$, we show that approximate biprojectivity $\ell^{1}(S)^{**}$ gives pseudo amenability of $\ell^{1}(S)$. We give a class of Banach algebras related to semigroup algebras which is not approximately biprojective.
Sufficient conditions for a semigroup measure algebra to have contractible Gelfand spectrum are given and it is shown that for a wide class of semigroups these conditions are also necessary.
In this paper we seek to determine the Jacobson radical of certain algebras based on semigroups, and in particular on the semigroups $(βS, \Box)$, where $S$ is a cancellative, countable, abelian semigroup and $βS$ is its Stone--Čech semigroup compactification. In particular, we wish to determine the radical of $\ell^{ 1}(β\N)$.
Let $S$ be a Rees semigroup, and let $\ell^1(S)$ be its convolution semigroup algebra. Using Morita equivalence we show that bounded Hochschild homology and cohomology of $\ell^1(S)$ is isomorphic to those of the underlying discrete group algebra.
It is known that every countable semigroup admits a weight w for which the semigroup algebra l_1(S,w) is Arens regular and no uncountable group admits such a weight; see [4]. In this paper, among other things, we show that for a large class of semigroups, the Arens regularity of the weighted semigroup algebra l_1(S,w) implies the countability of S.
For an inverse semigroup S with the set of idempotents E and a minimal idempotent, we find necessary and sufficient conditions for the Fourier algebra A(S) to be module amenable, module character amenable, module (operator) biflat, or module (operator) biprojective.
Let $S$ be an inverse semigroup with the set of idempotents $E$. In this paper we define the module super-amenability of a Banach algebra which is a Banach module over another Banach algebra with compatible actions, and show that when $E$ is upward directed and acts on $S$ trivially from left and by multiplication from right, the semigroup algebra $ \ell ^{1}(S)$ is $\ell^{1}(E)$-module super-amenable if and only if an appropriate group homomorphic image of $S$ is finite.
Let $L$ be a linear operator in $L^2({{\mathbb R}^n})$ and generate an analytic semigroup $\{e^{-tL}\}_{t\ge 0}$ with kernels satisfying an upper bound of Poisson type, whose decay is measured by $θ(L)\in (0,\infty].$ Let $ω$ on $(0,\infty)$ be of upper type 1 and of critical lower type $\widetilde p_0(ω)\in (n/(n+θ(L)), 1]$ and $ρ(t)={t^{-1}}/ω^{-1}(t^{-1})$ for $t\in (0,\infty)$. In this paper, the authors first introduce the VMO-type space $\mathrm{VMO}_{ρ,L}({\mathbb R}^n)$ and the tent space $T^{\infty}_{ω,\mathrm v}({\mathbb R}^{n+1}_+)$ and characterize the space $\mathrm{VMO}_{ρ,L}({\m…
Banach algebra A for which the natural embedding x into x^ of A into WAP(A)* is bounded below; that is, for some m in R with m > 0 we have ||x^|| > m ||x||, is called a WAP-algebra. Through we mainly concern with weighted measure algebra M_b(S;w); where w is a weight on a semi-topological semigroup S. We study those con- ditions under which M_b(S;w) is a WAP-algebra (respectively dual Banach algebra). In particular, M_b(S) is a WAP-algebra (respectively dual Banach algebra) if and only if wap(S) separates the points of S (respectively S is compactly cancellative semigroup). We apply our result…
Let $S$ be an inverse semigroup with the set of idempotents $E$. We prove that the semigroup algebra $\ell^{1}(S)$ is always $2n$-weakly module amenable as an $\ell^{1}(E)$-module, for any $n\in \mathbb{N}$, where $E$ acts on $S$ trivially from the left and by multiplication from the right.
A higher rank numerical semigroup is a positive cone whose seminormalization is isomorphic to the free abelian semigroup. The corresponding nonselfadjoint semigroup algebras are known to provide examples that answer Arveson's Dilation Problem to the negative. Here we show that these algebras share the polydisc as the character space in a canonical way. We subsequently use this feature in order to identify higher rank numerical semigroups from the corresponding nonselfadjoint algebras.
A free semigroup algebra S is the weak-operator-closed (non-self-adjoint) operator algebra generated by n isometries with pairwise orthogonal ranges. A unit vector x is said to be wandering for S if the set of images of x under non-commuting words in the generators of S is orthonormal. We establish the following dichotomy: either a free semigroup algebra has a wandering vector, or it is a von Neumann algebra. Consequences include that every free semigroup algebra is reflexive, and that certain free semigroup algebras are hyper-reflexive with a very small hyper-reflexivity constant.
Let $M$ be a finite von Neumann algebra. In the first part, we give asymptotic results about $M$-stable sequences of weak*-continuous mappings which are related with operators belonging to $M$. In the second part, we extend, by a shorter way, similarity results given in [CaFa2] to unbounded semigroups of operators contained in a finite von Neumann algebra.
We describe some connections between three different fields: combinatorics (umbral calculus), functional analysis (linear functionals and operators) and harmonic analysis (convolutions on group-like structures). Systematic usage of cancellative semigroup, their convolution algebras, and tokens between them provides a common language for description of objects from these three fields. Keywords: cancellative semigroups, umbral calculus, harmonic analysis, token, convolution algebra, integral transform
We consider semigroups of operators on a W$^*$-algebra and prove, under appropriate assumptions, the existence of a Jacobs-DeLeeuw-Glicksberg type decomposition. This decomposition splits the algebra into a "stable" and "reversible" part with respect to the semigroup and yields, among others, a structural approach to the Perron-Frobenius spectral theory for completely positive operators on W$^*$-algebras.
We study groupoids and semigroup C*-algebras arising from graphs of monoids, in the setting of right LCM monoids. First, we establish a general criterion when a graph of monoids gives rise to a submonoid of the fundamental group which is right LCM. Moreover, we carry out a detailed analysis of structural properties of semigroup C*-algebras arising from graphs of monoids, including closed invariant subspaces and topological freeness of the groupoids as well as ideal structure, nuclearity and K-theory of the semigroup C*-algebras. As an application, we construct families of pairwise non-conjugat…
We study the structure of the generator of a symmetric, conservative quantum dynamical semigroup with norm-bounded generator on a von Neumann algebra equipped with a faithful semifinite trace. For von Neumann algebras with abelian commutant (i.e. type I von Neumann algebras), we give a necessary and sufficient algebraic condition for the generator of such a semigroup to be written as a sum of square of self-adjoint derivations of the von Neumann algebra. This generalizes some of the results obtained by Albeverio, H(phi)egh-Krohn and Olsen [Alb] for the special case of the finite dimensional ma…
In this paper we study the structure of the $C^*$-algebra, generated by the representation of the paths semigroup on a partially ordered set (poset) and get the net of isomorphic $C^*$-algebras over this poset. We construct the extensions of this algebra, such that the algebra is an ideal in that extensions and quotient algebras are isomorphic to the Cuntz algebra.
