Symmetric matrices related to the Mertens function

In this paper we explore a family of congruences over $\N^\ast$ from which one builds a sequence of symmetric matrices related to the Mertens function. From the results of numerical experiments, we formulate a conjecture about the growth of the quadratic norm of these matrices, which implies the Riemann hypothesis. This suggests that matrix analysis methods may come to play a more important role in this classical and difficult problem.

Some experiments on the growth of Mertens matrices

We give some experimental observations on the growth of the norm of certain matrices related to the Mertens function. The results obtained in these experiments convince us that linear algebra may help in the study of Mertens function and other arithmetic functions.

Notes on Cardinal's Matrices

These notes are motivated by the work of Jean-Paul Cardinal on symmetric matrices related to the Mertens function. He showed that certain norm bounds on his matrices implied the Riemann hypothesis. Using a different matrix norm we show an equivalence of the Riemann hypothesis to suitable norm bounds on his matrices in the new norm. Then we specify a deformed version of his Mertens function matrices that unconditionally satisfies a norm bound that is of the same strength as his Riemann hypothesis bound.

Eigenvalues of symmetric matrices over integral domains

Given an integral domain A we consider the set of all integral elements over A that can occur as an eigenvalue of a symmetric matrix over A. We give a sufficient criterion for being such an element. In the case where A is the ring of integers of an algebraic number field this sufficient criterion is also necessary and we show that the size of matrices grows linearly in the degree of the element. The latter result settles a questions raised by Bass, Estes and Guralnick.

Integer symmetric matrices of small spectral radius and small Mahler measure

In a previous paper we completely described cyclotomic matrices--integer symmetric matrices of spectral radius at most 2. In this paper we find all minimal noncyclotomic matrices. As a consequence, we are able to determine all integer symmetric matrices of spectral radius at most 2.019, and to determine all integer symmetric matrices whose Mahler measure is at most 1.3. In particular we solve the strong version of Lehmer's problem for integer symmetric matrices: all noncyclotomic matrices have Mahler measure at least "Lehmer's number" 1.17628... .

Integer symmetric matrices having all their eigenvalues in the interval [-2,2]

We completely describe all integer symmetric matrices that have all their eigenvalues in the interval [-2,2]. Along the way we classify all signed graphs, and then all charged signed graphs, having all their eigenvalues in this same interval. We then classify subsets of the above for which the integer symmetric matrices, signed graphs and charged signed graphs have all their eigenvalues in the open interval (-2,2).

One-quasihomomorphisms from the integers into symmetric matrices

A function $f$ from $\mathbb{Z}$ to the symmetric matrices over an arbitrary field $K$ of characteristic $0$ is a $1$-quasihomomorphism if the matrix $f(x+y) - f(x) - f(y)$ has rank at most $1$ for all $x,y \in \mathbb{Z}$. We show that any such $1$-quasihomomorphism has distance at most $2$ from an actual group homomorphism. This gives a positive answer to a special case of a problem posed by Kazhdan and Ziegler.
