We develop a functional renormalization group approach which describes the low-energy single-particle properties of the Anderson impurity model up to intermediate on-site interactions $U \lesssim 15 Δ$, where $Δ$ is the hybridization in the wide-band limit. Our method is based on a generalization of a method proposed by Schütz, Bartosch and Kopietz [Phys. Rev. B 72, 035107 (2005)], using two independent Hubbard-Stratonovich fields associated with transverse and longitudinal spin fluctuations. Although we do not reproduce the exponentially small Kondo scale in the limit $U \to \infty$, the spin fluctuations included in our approach remove the unphysical Stoner instability predicted by mean-field theory for $U > πΔ$. We discuss different decoupling schemes and show that a decoupling which manifestly respects the spin-rotational invariance of the problem gives rise to the lowest quasiparticle weight. To obtain a closed flow equation for the fermionic self-energy we also propose a new truncation scheme of the functional renormalization group flow equations using Dyson-Schwinger equations to express bosonic vertex functions in terms of fermionic ones.
Using the Bethe ansatz method, we study the ground state properties of a $U\to\infty$ Anderson impurity in a ``gapless'' host, where a density of band states vanishes at the Fermi level $ε_F$ as $|ε-ε_F|$. As in metals, the impurity spin is proven to be screened at arbitrary parameters of the system. However, the impurity occupancy as a function of the bare impurity energy is shown to acquire novel qualitative features which demonstrate a nonuniversal behavior of the system. The latter explains why the Kondo screening is absent (or exists only at quite a large electron-impurity coupling) in ea…
The Friedel oscillations in the vicinity of a Friedel-Anderson (FA) impurity are investigated numerically. For an FA impurity in the local moment limit the normalized amplitude A(ξ) is S-shaped, approximately zero at short distances, approaching two at large distances and crossing the value one at the characteristic length ξ_{1/2}. Surprisingly, the Friedel oscillations of a simple non-interacting Friedel impurity with a narrow resonance at the Fermi level show a very similar behavior of their amplitude A(ξ). A comparison correlates the resonance width and the Kondo energy of the FA impurity w…
The quantitative control of the dynamic correlations of single impurity Anderson models is essential in several very active fields. We analyze the one-particle Green function with a constant energy resolution by dynamic density-matrix renormalization. In contrast to other approaches, sharp dominant resonances at high energies are found. Their origin and importance are discussed.
With the help of computer algebra, I devise an exact unitary transformation for the Anderson impurity model which allows to kill the hybridization term in the slightly simplified case of zero chemical potential. Then I compute explicitly the outcome of this transformation. This is a rigorous version of the well known Schrieffer-Wolff transformation. It should be possible to treat the general case at the price of increased computation time.
The twofold degenerate Anderson impurity model [1-4] is investigated and the strong electronic correlations of d-electrons of impurity ion are taken into account by elaborating suitable diagram technique. We discuss the properties of the Slater-Kanamori model [2-4] of d-impurity electrons. After finding the eigenfunctions and eigenvalues of all 16 local states, we determine the local one-particle propagator. Then we construct the perturbation theory around the atomic limit of the impurity ion and obtain the Dyson type equation for the renormalized one-particle propagator. Diagrammatic theory h…
We use the numerical renormalization group method to study an Anderson impurity in a conduction band with the density of states varying as rho(omega) \propto |omega|^r with r>0. We find two different fixed points: a local-moment fixed point with the impurity effectively decoupled from the band and a strong-coupling fixed point with a partially screened impurity spin. The specific heat and the spin-susceptibility show powerlaw behaviour with different exponents in strong-coupling and local-moment regime. We also calculate the impurity spectral function which diverges (vanishes) with |omega|^{-r…
We study the growth of entanglement entropy in density matrix renormalization group calculations of the real-time quench dynamics of the Anderson impurity model. We find that with appropriate choice of basis, the entropy growth is logarithmic in both the interacting and noninteracting single-impurity models. The logarithmic entropy growth is understood from a noninteracting chain model as a critical behavior separating regimes of linear growth and saturation of entropy, corresponding respectively to an overlapping and gapped energy spectra of the set of bath states. We find that with an approp…
We show that a generic single-orbital Anderson impurity model, lacking for instance any kind of particle-hole symmetry, can be exactly mapped without any constraint onto a resonant level model coupled to two Ising variables, which reduce to one if the hybridisation is particle-hole symmetric. The mean-field solution of this model is found to be stable to unphysical spontaneous magnetisation of the impurity, unlike the saddle-point solution in the standard slave-boson representation. Remarkably, the mean-field estimate of the Wilson ratio approaches the exact value $R_\text{W}=2$ in the Kondo r…
We investigate static and dynamical ground-state properties of the two-impurity Anderson model at half filling in the limit of vanishing impurity separation using the dynamical density-matrix renormalization group method. In the weak-coupling regime, we find a quantum phase transition as function of inter-impurity hopping driven by the charge degrees of freedom. For large values of the local Coulomb repulsion, the transition is driven instead by a competition between local and non-local magnetic correlations. We find evidence that, in contrast to the usual phenomenological picture, it seems to…
We develop a continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo method based on a strong-coupling expansion for Anderson impurity models with phonon-assisted hybridizations for arbitrary number of phonon modes. As a benchmark, we investigate the two-channel Anderson model with a single phonon, and numerically demonstrate that an SO(5) susceptibility composed of localized-electron charge and phonon-parity operators diverges logarithmically at the non-Fermi liquid critical point in the model, which verifies the predictions by the boundary conformal field theory[K. Hattori: Phys. Rev. B {\bf 85} (2012) 214411].
We find by Wilson numerical renormalization group and conformal field theory that a three-orbital Anderson impurity model for a C$_{60}^{n-}$ molecule has a very rich phase diagram which includes non-Fermi-liquid stable and unstable fixed points with interesting properties, most notably high sensitivity to doping $n$. We discuss the implications of our results to the conductance behavior of C$_{60}$-based single-molecule transistor devices.
Josephson current for a system consisting of an Anderson impurity weakly coupled to two unconventional superconductors is studied and shown to be driven by a surface zero energy (mid-gap) bound-state. The repulsive Coulomb interaction in the dot can turn a $π$ junction into a 0-junction. This effect is more pronounced in p-wave superconductors while in high-temperature superconductors with $d_{x^2-y^2}$ symmetry it can exit for rather large artificial centers at which tunneling occurs within a finite region.
The method of continuous unitary transformations (CUTs) is applied to the Anderson impurity and the Kondo model aiming at the systematic derivation of convergent effective models. If CUTs are applied in a conventional way, diverging differential equations occur. Similar to poor man's scaling the energy scale, below which the couplings diverge, corresponds to the Kondo temperature $T_K$. We present a way to apply CUTs to the Kondo and to the Anderson impurity model so that no divergences occur but a converged effective low-energy model is derived with small fnite parameters at arbitrarily small…
In the two-impurity Anderson model, the inter-impurity spin exchange interaction favors a spin singlet state between two impurities leading to the breakdown of the Kondo effect. We show that a local uniform magnetic field can delocalize the quasiparticles to restore the Kondo resonance. This transition is found to be continuous, accompanied by not only the divergence of the staggered (antiferromagnetic) susceptibility, but also the divergence of the uniform spin susceptibility. This may imply that the magnetic field induced quantum phase transitions in Kondo systems are in favor of the local c…
We solve the two-channel Anderson impurity model using the Bethe-Ansatz. We determine the ground state and derive the thermodynamics, obtaining the impurity entropy and specific heat over the full range of temperature. We show that the low temperature physics is given by a line of fixed points decribing a two-channel non Fermi liquid behavior in the integral valence regime associated with moment formation as well as in the mixed valence regime where no moment forms. We discuss relevance for the theory of UBe$_{13}$.
The recently developed energy-scale-dependent Composite Operator Method is applied to the single-impurity Anderson model. A fully self-consistent solution is given and analyzed. At very low temperatures, the density of states presents, on the top of the high-energy background, a Kondo-like peak whose parameter dependence is discussed in detail. The proposed method reproduces the exact results known in the literature with very low numerical effort and it is applicable for arbitrary values of the external parameters.
We implement the Lanczos algorithm on natural orbital basis to solve the zero-temperature Green's function of Anderson impurity models, following the work of Y. Lu, M. Höppner, O. Gunnarsson, and M. W. Haverkort, Phys. Rev. B {\bf 90} (2014) 085102. We present the technical details, generalize the algorithm to the cases of particle-hole asymmetry, with local magnetic field, and of two impurities. The results are benchmarked with conventional Lanczos, quantum Monte Carlo, and numerical renormalization group methods, demonstrating its potential as a powerful impurity solver for the dynamical mea…
Using a local moment approach of Logan et al. we developed a solver for a multi-orbital single impurity Anderson model. The existence of the local moments is taken from the outset and their values are determined through variational principle by minimizing the corresponding ground state energy. The method is used to solve the dynamical mean-field equations for the multi-orbital Hubbard model. In particular, the Mott-Hubbard metal--insulator transition is addressed within this approach.
We present a general theory for the Fano resonance in Anderson impurity systems. It is shown that the broadening of the impurity level leads to an additional and important contribution to the Fano resonance around the Fermi surface, especially in the mixed valence regime. This contribution results from the interference between the Kondo resonance and the broadened impurity level. Being applied to the scanning tunnelling microscopic experiments, we find that our theory gives a consistent and quantitative account for the Fano resonance lineshapes for both Co and Ti impurities on Au or Ag surface…
We study the property of a magnetic impurity on a single-layer graphene within an Anderson impurity model. Due to the vanishing local density of states at the Fermi level in graphene, the impurity spin cannot be effectively screened out. Treating the problem within the Gutzwiller approximation, we found a region in the parameter space of $U$-$E^f$ where the impurity is in the local moment state, which is characterized by a zero effective hybridization between the bath electron and the magnetic impurity. Here $U$ is the onsite Coulomb repulsion of the impurity electrons and $E^f$ the impurity e…
We use a trial wave function to study the spin-1/2 Kondo effect of a helical metal on the surface of a three-dimensional topological insulator. While the impurity spin is quenched by conduction electrons, the spin-spin correlation of the conduction electron and impurity is strongly anisotropic in both spin and spatial spaces. As a result of strong spin-orbit coupling, the out-of-plane component of the impurity spin is found to be fully screened by the orbital angular momentum of the conduction electrons.
We demonstrate the effectiveness of a generalized renormalized perturbational approach to calculate the induced magnetization for the single impurity Anderson model with a strong on-site interaction, using flow equations for renormalized parameters to scale from a weak correlation to a strong correlation regime. We show that, using simple approximation schemes in different parameter regimes, remarkably accurate results can be obtained for all magnetic field values by comparing the results with those from direct numerical renormalization group and Bethe ansatz calculations.
A single Anderson impurity model recently predicted, through its unstable fixed point, the phase diagram of a two band model correlated conductor, well confirmed by Dynamical Mean Field Theory in infinite dimensions. We study here the one dimensional version of the same model and extract its phase diagram in this opposite limit of reduced dimensionality. As expected for one dimension, the Mott metal-insulator transition at half filling is replaced by a dimerized insulator-undimerized Mott insulator transition, while away from half filling the strongly correlated superconductivity for inverted …
We consider the symmetric single-impurity Anderson model in the presence of pairing fluctuations. In the isotropic limit, the degrees of freedom of the local impurity are separated into hybridizing and non-hybridizing modes. The self-energy for the hybridizing modes can be obtained exactly, leading to two subbands centered at $\pm U/2$. For the non-hybridizing modes, the second order perturbation yields a singular resonance of the marginal Fermi liquid form. By multiplicative renomalization, the self-energy is derived exactly, showing the resonance is pinned at the Fermi level, while its stren…
Ground-state properties of the non-interacting symmetric single-impurity Anderson model (SIAM) are derived from the corresponding eigenenergy equation. Explicit formulae are given for the ground-state energy, the hybridization, and the momentum distribution that are essential quantities for variational approaches to the interacting model. Various spectral functions, e.g., the total density of states, the phase shift function, and the impurity spectral function, are shown to agree with those obtained from the equation-of-motion method (see supplementary material). For a constant hybridization s…
We investigate the single-impurity Anderson model by means of the recently introduced modified perturbation theory. This approximation scheme yields reasonable results away from the symmetric case. The agreement with exactly known results for the symmetric case is checked, and results for the non-symmetric case are presented. With decreasing conduction band occupation, the breakdown of the screening of the local moment is observed. In the crossover regime between Kondo limit and mixed-valence regime, an enhanced zero-temperature susceptibility is found.
The impurity Green function and dynamical susceptibilties for the two-channel Anderson impurity model are calculated. An exact expression for the self-energy of the impurity Green function is derived. The imaginary part of the self-energy scales as $\sqrt{|\w/T_K|}$ for $T\to 0$ serving as a hallmark for non-Fermi behavior. The many-body resonance is pinned to a universal value $1/(2πΔ)$ at $\w=0$. Its shape becomes increasingly more symmetric for the Kondo-regimes of the model. The dynamical susceptibilities are governed by two energy scales $T_K$ and $T_h$ and approach a constant value for $…
In this work we outline a simple and numerically inexpensive approach to describe the spectral features of the single-impurity Anderson model. The method combines aspects of the density matrix embedding theory (DMET) approach with a spectral broadening approach inspired by those used in numerical renormalization group (NRG) methods. At zero temperature for a wide range of U , the spectral function produced by this approach is found to be in good agreement with general expectations as well as more advanced and complex numerical methods such as DMRG-based schemes. The theory developed here is si…
We develop a projective quantum Monte Carlo algorithm of the Hirsch-Fye type for obtaining ground state properties of the Anderson impurity model. This method is employed to solve the self-consistency equations of dynamical mean field theory. It is shown that the approach converges rapidly to the ground state so that reliable zero-temperature results are obtained. As a first application, we study the Mott-Hubbard metal-insulator transition of the one-band Hubbard model, reconfirming the numerical renormalization group results.
The two-particle-self-consistent theory is applied to the single-impurity Anderson model. It is found that it cannot reproduce the small energy scale in the strong correlation limit. A modified scheme to overcome this difficulty is proposed by introducing an appropriate vertex correction explicitly. Using the same vertex correction, the self-energy is investigated, and it is found that under certain assumptions it reproduces the result of the modified perturbation theory which interpolates the weak and the strong correlation limits.
We study the quench dynamics of an Anderson impurity model using the configuration interaction (CI) method. In particular, we focus on the relaxation behavior of the impurity occupation. The system is found to behave very differently in the weak-coupling and strong-coupling regimes. In the weak-coupling regime, the impurity occupation relaxes to a time-independent constant quickly after only a few oscillations. In the strong-coupling regime, the impurity occupation develops a fast oscillation, with a much slower relaxation. We show that it is the multi-peak structure in the many-body energy sp…
Using non-equilibrium renormalized perturbation theory, we calculate the conductance G as a function of temperature T and bias voltage V for an Anderson model, suitable for describing transport properties through a quantum dot. For renormalized parameters that correspond to the extreme Kondo limit, we do not find a simple scaling formula beyond a quadratic dependence in T and V. However, if valence fluctuations are allowed, we find agreement with recent experiments.
We present an extension of the local moment approach to the Anderson impurity model with spin-dependent hybridization. By employing the two-self-energy description, as originally proposed by Logan and co-workers, we applied the symmetry restoration condition for the case with spin-dependent hybridization. Self-consistent ground states were determined through variational minimization of the ground state energy. The results obtained with our spin-dependent local moment approach applied to a quantum dot system coupled to ferromagnetic leads are in good agreement with those obtained from previous …
We consider an integrable model describing an Anderson-like impurity coupled to an open $t$--$J$ chain. Both the hybridization (i.e. its coupling to bulk chain) and the local spectrum can be controlled without breaking the integrability of the model. As the hybridization is varied, holon and spinon bound states appear in the many body ground state. Based on the exact solution we study the state of the impurity and its contribution to thermodynamic quantities as a function of an applied magnetic field. Kondo behaviour in the magnetic response of the impurity can be observed provided that its pa…
We present a new method to calculate directly the one-particle self-energy of an impurity Anderson model with Wilson's numerical Renormalization Group method by writing this quantity as the ratio of two correlation functions. This way of calculating Sigma(z) turns out to be considerably more reliable and accurate than via the impurity Green's function alone. We show results for the self-energy for the case of a constant coupling between impurity and conduction band (ImDelta = const) and the effective Delta(z) arising in the Dynamical Mean Field Theory of the Hubbard model. Implications to the …
The density matrix renormalization group method is applied to obtain the ground state phase diagram of the single impurity Anderson model on the honeycomb lattice at half filling. The calculation of local static quantities shows that the phase diagram contains two distinct phases, the local moment (LM) phase and the asymmetric strong coupling (ASC) phase. These results are supported by the local spin and charge excitation spectra, which exhibit qualitatively different behavior in these two phases and also reveal the existence of the valence fluctuating point at the phase boundary. For comparis…
A particle-hole symmetric Anderson impurity model with a metallic host of narrow bandwidth is studied within the framework of the local moment approach. The resultant single-particle spectra are compared to unrestricted Hartree-Fock, second order perturbation theory about the noninteracting limit, and Lanczos spectra by Hofstetter and Kehrein. Rather accurate analytical results explain the spectral evolution over almost the entire range of interactions. These encompass, in particular, a rationale for the four-peak structure observed in the low-energy sector of the Lanczos spectra in the modera…
We study the spin magnetic moment of a single impurity embedded in a finite-size non-magnetic host exhibiting a band gap. The calculations were performed using a tight-binding model Hamiltonian. The simple criterion for the magnetic to non-magnetic transition as given in the Anderson impurity model breaks down in these cases. We show how the spin magnetic moment of the impurity that normally would be quenched can be restored upon introducing a gap at the Fermi level in the host density of states. The magnitude of the impurity spin magnetic moment scales monotonically with the size of the band …
We study the phase diagram of a twofold orbitally degenerate Anderson impurity model which presents a non-trivial fixed point similar to the two-impurity Kondo model one. Remarkably, this fixed point is more robust than the latter one, since it can only be destabilized by orbital or gauge symmetry breaking. The impurity model is interesting per se, but here our interest is rather in the possibility that it might be representative of the behavior of a strongly-correlated lattice model close to a Mott transition. We argue that this lattice model should unavoidably encounter the non-trivial fixed…
We investigate the mixed-valent regime of a two-configuration Anderson impurity model for uranium ions, with separate quadrupolar and magnetic doublets. With a new Monte Carlo approach and the non-crossing approximation we find: (i) A non-Fermi-liquid fixed point with two-channel Kondo model critical behavior; (ii) Distinct energy scales for screening the low-lying and excited doublets; (iii) A semi-quantitative explanation of magnetic-susceptibility data for U$_{1-x}$Th$_x$Be$_{13}$ assuming 60-70% quadrupolar doublet ground-state weight, supporting the quadrupolar-Kondo interpretation.
We study the non-interacting two-impurity Anderson model on a lattice using the Green function equation-of-motion method. A case of particular interest is the RKKY limit that is characterized by a small hybridization between impurities and host electrons and the absence of a direct coupling between the impurities. In contrast to the low-density case, at half band-filling and particle-hole symmetry, the RKKY interaction decays as the inverse square of the impurity distance along the axis of a simple cubic lattice. In the RKKY limit, for the spectral function we generically observe a small split…
In this work we present and analyze two tensor network-based influence functional approaches for simulating the real-time dynamics of quantum impurity models such as the Anderson model. Via comparison with recent numerically exact simulations, we show that such methods accurately capture the long-time non-equilibrium quench dynamics. The two parameters that must be controlled in these tensor network influence functional approaches are a time discretization (Trotter) error and a bond dimension (tensor network truncation) error. We show that the actual numerical uncertainties are controlled by a…
We construct the boundary conformal field theory that describes the low-temperature behavior of the two-channel Anderson impurity model. The presence of an exactly marginal operator is shown to generate a line of stable fixed points parameterized by the charge valence of the impurity. We calculate the exact zero-temperature entropy and impurity thermodynamics along the fixed line. We also derive the critical exponents of the characteristic Fermi edge singularities caused by time-dependent hybridization between conduction electrons and impurity. Our results suggest that in the mixed-valent regi…
The Barnes slave boson approach to the $U=\infty$ single impurity Anderson model extended by a non-local Coulomb interaction is revisited. We demonstrate first that the radial gauge representation facilitates the treatment of such a non-local interaction by performing the \emph{exact} evaluation of the path integrals representing the partition function, the impurity hole density and the impurity hole density autocorrelation function for a two-site cluster. The free energy is also obtained on the same footing. Next, the exact results are compared to their approximations at saddle-point level, a…
We show that the functional renormalization group is a numerically cheap method to obtain the low-energy behavior of the Anderson impurity model describing a localized interacting electron coupled to a bath of conduction electrons. Our approach uses an external magnetic field as flow parameter, partial bosonization of the transverse spin fluctuations, and frequency-independent interaction vertices which are fixed by Ward identities. We calculate the quasi-particle residue and the spin susceptibility in the particle-hole symmetric case and obtain excellent agreement with the Bethe ansatz result…
We present numerical renormalization group (NRG) calculations for a single-impurity Anderson model with a linear coupling to a local phonon mode. We calculate dynamical response functions, spectral densities, dynamic charge and spin susceptibilities. Being non-perturbative, the NRG is applicable for all parameter regimes. Our calculations cover both weak and strong electron-phonon coupling for zero and finite electron-electron interaction. We interpret the high- and low-energy features and compare our results to atomic limit calculations and perturbation theory. In certain restricted parameter…
We present an alternative functional renormalization group (fRG) approach to the single-impurity Anderson model at finite temperatures. Starting with the exact self-energy and interaction vertex of a small system ('core') containing a correlated site, we switch on the hybridization with a non-interacting bath in the fRG-flow and calculate spectra of the correlated site. Different truncations of the RG-flow-equations and choices of the core are compared and discussed. Furthermore we calculate the linear conductance and the magnetic susceptibility as functions of temperature and interaction stre…
We introduce a block Lanczos (BL) recursive technique to construct quasi-one-dimensional models, suitable for density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculations, from single- as well as multiple-impurity Anderson models in any spatial dimensions. This new scheme, named BL-DMRG method, allows us to calculate not only local but also spatially dependent static and dynamical quantities of the ground state for general Anderson impurity models without losing elaborate geometrical information of the lattice. We show that the BL-DMRG method can be easily extended to treat a multi-orbital Anderso…
It has been recently suggested that when an Anderson impurity is immersed in the bulk of a topological insulator, a Kondo resonant peak will appear simultaneously with an in-gap bound-state when the band-dispersion has an "inverted-Mexican-hat" form. The mid-gap bound-state generates another spin state and the Kondo effect is thereby screened. In this paper we study this problem within a weak-coupling RG scheme where we show that the system exhibits complex crossover behavior between different symmetry configurations and may evolve into a self-screened-Kondo or SO(3) low energy fix point. Expe…
The single channel Anderson impurity model is a standard model for the description of magnetic impurities in metallic systems. Usually, the bandwidth represents the largest energy scale of the problem. In this paper, we analyze the limit of a narrow band, which is relevant for the Mott-Hubbard transition in infinite dimensions. For the symmetric model we discuss two different effects: i) The impurity contribution to the density of states at the Fermi surface always turns out to be negative in such systems. This leads to a new crossover in the thermodynamic quantities that we investigate using …
We investigate a quantum dot (Anderson impurity) coupled to metallic leads, with a time-periodic voltage bias across the device. Using a time-dependent Schrieffer-Wolff transformation, we show that the Floquet Hamiltonian of the model can be mapped onto a two-channel Kondo model, in which the impurity is screened by separate conduction bands corresponding to parity-even and odd superpositions of the metallic leads. By changing the frequency and amplitude of the perturbation, one can tune the system to a quantum critical point with symmetric coupling of the impurity to both channels. For the un…
In this work we introduce a modified real-time continuous-time hybridization-expansion quantum Monte Carlo solver for a time-dependent single-orbital Anderson impurity model: CT-1/2-HYB-QMC. In the proposed method the diagrammatic expansion is performed only for one out of the two spin channels, while the resulting effective single-particle problem for the other spin is solved semi-analytically for each expansion diagram. CT-1/2-HYB-QMC alleviates the dynamical sign problem by reducing the order of sampled diagrams and makes it possible to reach twice as long time scales in comparison to the s…
Using the functional renormalization group (FRG) and the numerical renormalization group (NRG), we calculate the spectral function of the Anderson impurity model at zero and finite temperatures. In our FRG scheme spin fluctuations are treated non-perturbatively via a suitable Hubbard-Stratonovich field, but vertex corrections are neglected. A comparison with our highly accurate NRG results shows that this FRG scheme gives a quantitatively good description of the spectral line-shape at zero and finite temperatures both in the weak and strong coupling regimes, although at zero temperature the FR…
In a previous work (N. H. Tong, Phys. Rev. B 92, 165126 (2015)), an equation-of-motion based series expansion formalism was used to do the second-order strong-coupling expansion for the single-particle Green function of the Anderson impurity model. In this paper, we improve this theory in two aspects. We first use a more accurate scheme to self-consistently calculate the averages that appear in G1. In the resummation process, we use updated coefficients for the continued fraction, guided by the formally exact continued fraction from the Mori-Zwanzig theory. These changes lead to more accurate …
In his renormalization paper of the Kondo effect Wilson replaced the full band of s-electrons by a small number of ''Wilson states''. He started from a rather artificial symmetric band with constant density of states and constant interaction with the impurity. It is shown in the present paper that with a minor modification the Wilson states are optimally suited to treat the interaction of an impurity with an arbitrary s-band. Each Wilson state represents electrons of a whole energy range. It carries the interaction of all these electrons with the impurity. All the other electron states in this…
In this paper we have explored the role of valence fluctuations in an extended Anderson impurity model (e-SIAM) in which there is an additional Hubbard repulsion between conduction and impurity electrons, employing perturbative renormalization methods. We have calculated the scaling equations for the model parameters and solved them both analytically and numerically to find how valence fluctuations renormalize these parameters. Analytical solutions of the scaling equations yielded scaling invariants of the model which we find to be different than the Anderson impurity model signifying differen…
The Kondo resonance at the Fermi level is well-established for the electronic structure of Ce (f1 electron) and Yb (f1 hole) based systems. In this work, we report complementary experimental and theoretical studies on the Kondo resonance in Pr-based f2 system, PrTi2Al20. Using Pr 3d-4f resonant photoemission spectroscopy and single impurity Anderson model (SIAM) calculations including the full multiplets of Pr ions, we show that an f2 system can also give rise to a Kondo resonance at the Fermi level. The Kondo resonance peak is experimentally observed through a final-state-multiplet dependent …
We consider the universal scaling behaviour of the Kondo resonance in the strong coupling limit of the symmetric Anderson impurity model, using a recently developed local moment approach. The resultant scaling spectrum is obtained in closed form, and is dominated by long tails that in contrast to previous work are found to exhibit a slow logarithmic decay rather than power-law form, crossing over to characteristic Fermi liquid behaviour on the lowest energy scales. The resultant theory, while naturally approximate, is found to give very good agreement for essentially all frequencies with numer…
The applicability of bosonization and the Anderson-Yuval (AY) approach at strong coupling is investigated by considering two generic impurity models: the multichannel interacting resonant-level and the anisotropic Kondo models. The two methods differ in the renormalization of the conduction-electron density of states (DoS) near the impurity site. Reduction of the DoS, absent in bosonization but accounted for in the AY approach, is shown to be vital in some models yet redundant in others. The criterion being the stability of the strong-coupling fixed point. Renormalization of the DoS is essenti…
