After three years of no unusual activity, Anomalous X-ray Pulsar 1E 1048.1-5937 reactivated in 2007 March. We report on the detection of a large glitch (Delta(nu)/nu =1.63(2)X~10^{-5}) on 2007 March 26 (MJD 54185.9), contemporaneous with the onset of a pulsed-flux flare, the third flare observed from this source in 10 years of monitoring with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer. Additionally, we report on a detailed study of the evolution of the timing properties, the pulsed flux, and the pulse profile of this source as measured by RXTE from 1996 July to 2008 January. In our timing study, we attempted phase coherent timing of all available observations. We show that in 2001, a timing anomaly of uncertain nature occurred near the rise of the first pulsed flux flare; we show that a likely glitch (Delta(nu)/nu =2.91(9)X10^{-6}) occurred in 2002, near the rise of the second flare, and we present a detailed description of the variations in the spin-down. In our pulsed flux study, we compare the decays of the three flares and discuss changes in the hardness ratio. In our pulse profile study, we show that the profile exhibited large variations near the peak of the first two flares, and several small short-term profile variations during the most recent flare. Finally, we report on the discovery of a small burst 27 days after the peak of the last flare, the fourth burst discovered from this source. We discuss the relationships between the observed properties in the framework of the magnetar model.
In this paper, we summarize the RXTE measurements of cyclotron resonance scattering features in 8 accreting pulsars. The wide bandpass and modest resolution of the RXTE instruments make them ideal for measuring these generally broad features. In particular, the high energy response of HEXTE provides a window for discovery of new lines not detectable with proportional counters such as Ginga or the PCA alone.
We analyze the observations of the X-ray pulsar KS 1947+300 performed by the INTEGRAL and RXTE observatories over a wide (3-100 keV) X-ray energy range. The shape of the pulse profile was found to depend on the luminosity of the source. Based on the model of a magnetized neutron star, we study the characteristics of the pulsar using the change in its spin-up rate. We estimated the magnetic field strength of the pulsar and the distance to the binary.
We report on results of an observation with the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) of PSR B1706-44 with a live time of 132 ks, to search for pulsed X-ray emission. PSR B1706-44 is a radio and high-energy gamma-ray pulsar (detected by EGRET), but no pulsed emission has been detected in the X-ray band. Since most of the other known gamma-ray pulsars emit pulsed X-rays, it is expected that PSR B1706-44 would also be an X-ray pulsar. However, while the ROSAT PSPC detected a source at the pulsar position, it did not detect pulsations, giving a pulsed fraction upper limit of 18%. The RXTE observatio…
We report on our analysis of a 300 ks observation of the Vela pulsar with the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer (RXTE). The double-peaked, pulsed emission at 2 - 30 keV, which we had previously detected during a 93 ks observation, is confirmed with much improved statistics. There is now clear evidence, both in the spectrum and the light curve, that the emission in the RXTE band is a blend of two separate components. The spectrum of the harder component connects smoothly with the OSSE, COMPTEL and EGRET spectrum and the peaks in the light curve are in phase coincidence with those of the high-energy l…
This article is the second in the series that analyze about 1.87 million periods of Crab pulsar, observed by the PCA detector aboard the RXTE x-ray observatory. At these energies the pulsar displays none of the three phenomena that are often seen in normal radio pulsars -- ``pulse nulling'', ``systematic sub pulse drifting'' and ``mode changing''. Presence or absence of these three behavior in the Crab pulsar, at radio wavelengths, something that has not been rigorously established yet, might be important for a satisfactory understanding of the above three phenomena.
We report on long-term monitoring of the anomalous X-ray pulsar (AXP) 1E 1048.1-5937 using the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE). The timing behavior of this pulsar is different from that of other AXPs being monitored with RXTE. In particular, we show that the pulsar shows significant deviations from simple spin-down such that phase-coherent timing has not been possible over time spans longer than a few months. We find that the deviations from simple spin down are not consistent with single "glitch" type events, nor are they consistent with radiative precession. We show that in spite of the r…
We have detected pulsed emission from the Vela pulsar at 2 - 30 keV during a 93 ks observation with the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer (RXTE). The RXTE pulse profile shows two peaks, that are roughly in phase with the EGRET peaks, but does not show any significant interpeak emission. The phase of Peak 2 is energy dependent, moving to higher phase with increasing energy in the RXTE band, in phase alignment with the second optical pulse in the lowest energy band of 2 - 8 keV and in phase alignment with the second EGRET pulse in the highest energy band of 16-30 keV. The average pulse spectrum joins …
We report the results of analysis of observations of the Vela Pulsar by PCA on RXTE. Our data consists of two parts. The first part contains observations at 1, 4, and 9 days after the glitch in 1996 and has 27000 sec. total exposure time. The second part of observations were performed three months after this glitch and have a total exposure time of 93000 sec. We found pulsations in both sets. The observed spectrum is a power-law with no apparent change in flux or count rate. The theoretical expectations of increase in flux due to internal heating after a glitch are smaller than the uncertainty…
We report on long-term monitoring of the anomalous X-ray pulsar 1E 1048.1-5937 using the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer. This pulsar's timing behavior is different from that of other AXPs. In particular, the pulsar shows significant deviations from simple spin-down such that phase-coherent timing has not been possible over time spans longer than a few months. We show that in spite of the rotational irregularities, the pulsar exhibits neither pulse profile changes nor large pulsed flux variations. We discuss the implications of our results for AXP models. We suggest that 1E 1048.1-5937 may be a tr…
We report on high-resolution spatial and timing observations of the millisecond pulsar PSR J0218+4232 performed with the Chandra X-ray Observatory (CXO) and the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE). With these observations we were able to study a) the possible spatial extent at X-ray energies of the DC source coincident with PSR J0218+4232 in detail (CXO), b) the relative phasing between the X-ray, radio and gamma-ray profiles (CXO and RXTE) and c) the spectral properties at energies beyond 10 keV (RXTE). We found no indications for extended emission at X-ray energies down to ~ 1 arcsec scales a…
We analyze the observations of the X-ray pulsar LMC X-4 performed by the INTEGRAL observatory and the All-Sky Monitor (ASM) of the RXTE observatory over a wide energy range. The observed hard X-ray flux from the source is shown to change by more than a factor of 50 (from ~70 mCrab in the high state to ~1.3 mCrab in the low state) on the time scale of the accretion-disk precession period, whose mean value for 1996-2004 was determined with a high accuracy, Pprec=30.275+/-0.004 days. In the low state, a flare about 10 h in duration was detected from the source; the flux from the source increased …
We observed the anomalous X-ray pulsar 4U 0142+61 using the Proportional Counter Array (PCA) aboard the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) in March 1996. The pulse frequency was measured as f = 0.11510039(3) Hz with an upper limit of df/dt < 4 * 10^(-13) Hz/s upon the short term change in frequency over the 4.6 day span of the observations. A compilation of all historical measurements showed an overall spin-down trend with slope df/dt = (-3.0 +/- 0.1) * 10^(-14) Hz/s. Searches for orbital modulations in pulse arrival times yielded an upper limit of a_x sin i < 0.26 lt-s (99% confidence) for th…
We report RXTE/PCA observations of 4U 1608-52 on March 15, 18 and 22 immediately after the outburst in early 1996. The persistent count rates ranged from 190 to 450 cps (1-60 keV). During this period of time, 4U 1608-52 was in the island state. We detected QPO features in the power density spectra (PDS) at 567-800 Hz on March 15 and 22, with source fractional root-mean-square (rms) amplitude of 13%-17% and widths of 78-180 Hz. The average rms amplitude of these QPO features is positively correlated with the energy. Our results imply that the neutron star spin frequency is possibly between 300 …
We report here results from detailed timing and spectral studies of the high mass X-ray binary pulsar 4U~1538--52 over several binary periods using observations made with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) and BeppoSAX satellites. Pulse timing analysis with the 2003 RXTE data over two binary orbits confirms an eccentric orbit of the system. Combining the orbitial parameters determined from this observation with the earlier measurements we did not find any evidence of orbital decay in this X-ray binary. We have carried out orbital phase resolved spectroscopy to measure changes in the spectr…
We report on X-ray observations of the young, energetic radio pulsar PSR J1105-6107 obtained using the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer. Our timing analysis of Proportional Counter Array data finds no evidence for X-ray pulsations from this source. We set a new upper limit on the pulsed X-ray flux from the pulsar of 18% in the 2-10 keV band, for a duty cycle of 0.5. Our improved upper limit supports the hypothesis that the X-ray emission seen by the ASCA X-ray satellite in the direction of PSR J1105-6107 is the result of a pulsar-powered synchrotron nebula.
Millisecond pulsar PSR J0218+4232 shows remarkable high-energy properties: very hard pulsed X-ray emission up to ~10 keV and a likely detection of high-energy gamma-rays (> 100 MeV) with a soft spectrum. The relative phasing of the X-ray and gamma-ray profiles, however, was unknown. A recently performed Chandra (0.08-10 keV) observation of PSR J0218+4232 settled the phasing down to 0.2 millisecond, and shows that the X-ray pulses are aligned with the gamma-ray pulses providing supporting evidence for our first detection of high-energy gamma-rays from this source. The preliminary results from a…
A new X-ray source, XTE J1855-026, was discovered during RXTE scans along the galactic plane. The source shows pulsations at a period of 361 s and also modulation at a period of 6.1 days which we interpret as the orbital period of the system. The X-ray spectrum above ~3 keV can be fitted with an absorbed power law model with a high-energy cut-off, and an iron emission line at approximately 6.4 keV. We interpret these results as indicating that XTE J1855-026 is likely to consist of a neutron star accreting from the wind of an O or B supergiant primary. A less likely interpretation is that XTE J…
We summarise the proceedings of the SRCfTA workshop on ``Supernova Remnants, Pulsars and the Interstellar Medium'' that was held at the University of Sydney on Mar 18 and 19, 1999.
Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) All-Sky Monitor (ASM) observations of the X-ray binary 2S0114+650 show modulations at periods close to both the optically derived orbital period (11.591 days) and proposed pulse period (~ 2.7 hr). The pulse period shows frequency and intensity variability during the more than 2 years of ASM observations analyzed. The pulse properties are consistent with this arising from accretion onto a rotating neutron star and this would be the slowest such period known. The shape of the orbital light curve shows modulation over the course of the entire orbit and a compari…
We report on 10 years of monitoring of the 8.7-s Anomalous X-ray Pulsar 4U 0142+61 using the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer (RXTE). This pulsar exhibited stable rotation from 2000 March until 2006 February: the RMS phase residual for a spin-down model which includes nu, nudot, and nuddot is 2.3%. We report a possible phase-coherent timing solution valid over a 10-yr span extending back to March 1996. A glitch may have occured between 1998 and 2000, but is not required by the existing timing data. The pulse profile has been evolving since 2000. In particular, the dip of emission between its two pe…
We report on the discovery of hard spectral tails for energies above 10 keV in the total and pulsed spectra of anomalous X-ray pulsars 1RXS J1708-4009, 4U 0142+61 and 1E 2259+586 using RXTE PCA (2-60 keV) and HEXTE (15-250 keV) data and INTEGRAL IBIS ISGRI (20-300 keV) data. Improved spectral information on 1E 1841-045 is presented. The pulsed and total spectra measured above 10 keV have power-law shapes and there is so far no significant evidence for spectral breaks or bends up to ~150 keV. The pulsed spectra are exceptionally hard with indices measured for 4 AXPs approximately in the range -…
We report on an observation of the recently discovered accreting millisecond X-ray pulsar IGR J00291+5934 performed with the RXTE-Proportional Counter Array (PCA) and Chandra-High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer (HETGS). The RXTE data are from a two week follow-up of the source while the Chandra observation took place around the end of the follow-up, about 12 days after the discovery of the source, when the source flux had decreased already by a factor of ten. The analysis of the Chandra data allowed us to extract the most precise X-ray position of IGR J00291+5934, RA=00 29 03.08 and …
The present paper reports on the RXTE observations of the binary X-ray pulsar 4U0115+63, covering an outburst in 1999 March-April with 44 pointings. The 3-30 keV PCA spectra and the 15-50 keV HEXTE spectra were analyzed jointly for the cyclotron resonance features. When the 3-50 keV luminosity at an assumed distance of 7 kpc was in the range (5-13)x10^{37} erg s^{-1}, harmonic double cyclotron features were observed in absorption at ~11 and ~22 keV, as was measured previously during typical outbursts. As the luminosity decreased below \~5x10^{37} erg s^{-1}, the second resonance disappeared, a…
Observations with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer and the Jodrell Bank, Parkes, and Green Bank telescopes have enabled us to determine the time delay between radio and X-ray pulses in the two isolated pulsars B1821-24 and B1509-58. For the former we find that the narrow X-ray and radio pulse components are close to being coincident in time, with the radio peak leading by 0.02 period (60 +/- 20 microsec), while the wide X-ray pulse component lags the last of the two wider radio components by about 0.08 period. For the latter pulsar we find, using the standard value for the dispersion measure, t…
We report on our analysis of a 274 ks observation of the Vela pulsar with the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer (RXTE). The double-peaked, pulsed emission at 2 - 30 keV, which we had previously detected during a 93 ks observation, is confirmed with much improved statistics. There is now clear evidence, both in the spectrum and the light curve, that the emission in the RXTE band is a blend of two separate non-thermal components. The spectrum of the harder component connects smoothly with the OSSE, COMPTEL and EGRET spectrum and the peaks in the light curve are in phase coincidence with those of the h…
Simultaneous observations of the accretion-powered millisecond pulsar IGR J00291+5934 by International Gamma-Ray Astrophysics Laboratory and Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer during the 2004 December outburst are analysed. The average spectrum is well described by thermal Comptonization with an electron temperature of 50 keV and Thomson optical depth tau_T ~ 1 in a slab geometry. The spectral shape is almost constant during the outburst. We detect a spin-up of the pulsar with nudot=8.4x10E-13 Hz/s. The ISGRI data reveal the pulsation of X-rays at a period of 1.67 milliseconds up to ~150 keV. The pul…
Three new X-ray pulsars have been detected in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) and the positions of two others have been determined, with archive Chandra data. A series of five observations of the SMC took place between May and October 2002. Analysis of these data has revealed three previously unknown X-ray pulsars at pulse periods of 34, 503 and 138 seconds. The position of pulsar XTE J0052-725, which was originally detected by RXTE on June 19 2002, was also accurately determined and a previously detected 7.78s RXTE pulsar was identified as the source SMC X-3.
We have monitored the phase of the main X-ray pulse of the Crab pulsar with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) for almost eight years, since the start of the mission in January 1996. The absolute time of RXTE's clock is sufficiently accurate to allow this phase to be compared directly with the radio profile. Our monitoring observations of the pulsar took place bi-weekly (during the periods when it was at least 30 degrees from the Sun) and we correlated the data with radio timing ephemerides derived from observations made at Jodrell Bank. We have determined the phase of the X-ray main pulse…
We report on the long-term monitoring of three anomalous X-ray pulsars using the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE). We present a phase-coherent timing ephemeris for 4U 0142+61, and show that it has rotated with high stability over 4.4 yr, with RMS phase deviations of 7% of the pulse period from a simple fit including only $ν$ and $\dotν$. We report on the continued timing stability of 1E 2259.1+586, for which phase coherence has now been maintained over 4.5 yr, as well as on the detection of a significant $\ddotν$ in 1.4 yr of monitoring of RXS J170849.0-400910, consistent with recovery follo…
We report on 10 yr of monitoring of the 8.7-s Anomalous X-ray Pulsar 4U 0142+61 using the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer (RXTE). This pulsar exhibited stable rotation from 2000 until February 2006: the RMS phase residual for a spin-down model which includes nu, nudot, and nuddot is 2.3%. We report a possible phase-coherent timing solution valid over a 10-yr span extending back to March 1996. A glitch may have occured between 1998 and 2000, but it is not required by the existing data. We also report that the source's pulse profile has been evolving in the past 6 years, such that the dip of emissio…
Aims: Hete J1900.1-2455 is the seventh known X-ray transient accreting millisecond pulsar and has been in outburst for more than one year. We compared the data on Hete J1900.1-2455 with other similar objects and made an attempt at deriving constraints on the physical processes responsible for a spectral formation. Methods: The broad-band spectrum of the persistent emission in the 2-300 keV energy band and the timing properties were studied using simultaneous INTEGRAL and the publicly available RXTE data obtained in October 2005. The properties of the X-ray bursts observed from Hete J1900.1-245…
RXTE/ASM observations of PSR B1259-63 near the 1997 periastron passage find no emission brighter than appximately 10 times that detected by ASCA during the 1994 periastron encounter, demonstrating that the pulsar is unlikely to have undergone even brief episodes of accretion.
The X-ray binary population of the SMC is very different from that of the Milky Way consisting, with one exception, entirely of transient pulsating Be/neutron star binaries. We have now been monitoring these SMC X-ray pulsars for over 10 years using the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer with observations typically every week. The RXTE observations have been complemented with surveys made using the Chandra observatory. The RXTE observations are non-imaging but enable detailed studies of pulsing sources. In contrast, Chandra observations can provide precise source locations and detections of sources a…
We analysed the RXTE archival data of 1E 1048.1-5937 covering a time span of more than one year. The spin down rate of this source decreases by 30 percent during the observation. We could not resolve the X-ray flux variations because of contamination by Eta Carinae. We find that the level of pulse frequency fluctuations of 1E 1048.1-5937 is consistent with typical noise levels of accretion powered pulsars. Recent RXTE observations of 1E 2259+586 have shown a constant spin down with a very low upper limit on timing noise. We used the RXTE archival X-ray observations of 1E 2259+586 to show that …
We present new X-ray observations of the X-ray pulsar 1E 2259+586, obtained during March 1997, with the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer (RXTE). We have measured the pulse frequency derivative $\dot ν= (-1.08 \pm 0.04) \times 10^{-14}$ Hz s$^{-1}$ from pulse arrival times obtained in a sequence of 5 observations spread over one month. This $\dotν$ is consistent with the long term spin-down trend. We also found that the observed X-ray luminosity is consistent with that measured at quiescent X-ray flux levels by previous missions. Our observations imply that 1E 2259+586 was spinning down steadily wit…
This article is the first in the series that analyze about 1.87 million periods of PSR B0531+21 (Crab pulsar), observed by the PCA detector aboard the RXTE x-ray observatory. The Crab pulsar's x-ray light curve shows little variation over time scales ranging from days to a period (33.46 milli seconds). The standard deviation of its x-ray flux variation is $\approx$ 0.7% of its mean value, which is negligible compared to its radio flux variations. The phase resolved power spectrum of pulse to pulse x-ray flux variation shows no spectral feature; an upper limit to the peak of any possible broad …
INTEGRAL and RXTE performed three simultaneous observations of the nearby radio galaxy Cen A in 2003 March, 2004 January, and 2004 February with the goals of investigating the geometry and emission processes via the spectral/temporal variability of the X-ray/low energy gamma ray flux, and intercalibration of the INTEGRAL instruments with respect to those on RXTE. When combined with earlier archival RXTE results, we find the power law continuum flux and the line-of-sight column depth varied independently, and the iron line flux was essentially unchanging. Taking X-ray spectral measurements from…
PSR B0656+14 was observed by the {\it Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE)} with the proportional counter array (PCA) and the high-energy x-ray timing experiment (HEXTE) for 160 ksec during August 22 -- September 3, 1997. No pulsation was firmly found in the timing analysis, in which the contemporaneous radio ephemeris and various statistical tests were applied for searching evidence of pulsation. A marginal detection of pulsation at a confidence level of 95.5% based on the $H$-test was found with data in the whole HEXTE energy band. In the energy band of 2-10 keV the {\it RXTE} PCA upper limits…
Apart from regular monitoring by ASM, the compact object SS 433 was observed with RXTE several times last two/three years. We present the first analysis of these observations. We also include the results of the recent exciting TOO campaign made during donour inferior (orbital phase $ϕ=0$) and superior ($ϕ=0.5$) conjunctions which took place on Oct. 2nd, 2003, and on March 13th, 2004 respectively, when the jet itself was directly pointing towards us (i.e., precessional phase $ψ\sim 0$). Generally, we found that two distinct lines fit the spectra taken on all these days. We present some of the l…
I present an observational review of the five accretion-driven millisecond X-ray pulsars currently known, focusing on the results obtained with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) satellite. A prominent place in this review is given to the first such system discovered, SAX J1808.4-3658. Currently four outbursts have been detected from this source, three of which have been studied using RXTE. This makes this source the best studied example of all accretion-driven millisecond pulsars. Its October 2002 outburst is of particular interest because of the discovery of kilohertz quasi-periodic osci…
A great deal of emphasis on timing in the RXTE era has been on pushing toward higher and higher frequency phenomena, particularly kHz QPOs. However, the large areas of the RXTE pointed instruments provide another capability which is key for the understanding of accreting X-ray pulsars -- the ability to accumulate high quality spectra in a limited observing time. For the accreting X-ray pulsars, with their relatively modest spin frequencies, this translates into an ability to study broad band spectra as a function of pulse phase. This is a critical tool, as pulsar spectra are strong functions o…
We present the results from RXTE/PCA observations of 4U 1608-52 in its island state on March 15, 18 and 22 of 1996. Three type I X-ray bursts were detected in one RXTE orbit on March 22. We observed QPO features peaking at 567-800 Hz on March 15 and 22, with source fractional rms amplitude of 13%-17% and widths of 78-180 Hz in the power density spectra averaged over each spacecraft orbit. The rms amplitudes of these QPOs are positively correlated with the photon energy. The three X-ray bursts, with burst intervals of 16 and 8 minutes, have a duration of 16s. The blackbody emission region of th…
We present the serendipitous discovery of 16 ms pulsed X-ray emission from the Crab-like supernova remnant N157B in the Large Magellanic Cloud. This is the fastest spinning pulsar associated with a supernova remnant (SNR). Observations with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE), centered on the field containing SN1987A, reveal an X-ray pulsar with a narrow pulse profile. Archival ASCA X-ray data confirm this detection and locate the pulsar within 1' of the supernova remnant N157B, 14' from SN1987A. The pulsar manifests evidence for glitch(es) between the RXTE and ASCA observations which span …
We present timing and spectral analysis of RXTE-PCA observations of the accretion powered pulsar 4U 1907+09 between June 2007 and August 2008. 4U 1907+09 had been in a spin-down episode with a spin-down rate of $-3.54\times10^{-14}$ Hz s$^{-1}$ before 1999. From RXTE observations after March 2001, the source showed a $\sim 60$% decrease in spin-down magnitude and INTEGRAL observations after March 2003 showed that source started to spin-up. We found that the source recently entered a new spin-down episode with a spin-down rate of $-3.59 \times 10^{-14}$ Hz s$^{-1}$. This spin-down rate is prett…
In order to probe the activity of the inner disk flow and its effect on the neutron star surface emissions, we carried out the timing analysis of the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) observations of the millisecond X-ray pulsar XTE J1807--294, focusing on its correlated behaviors in X-ray intensities, hardness ratios, pulse profiles and power density spectra. The source was observed to have a serial of broad "puny" flares on a timescale of hours to days on the top of a decaying outburst in March 2003. In the flares, the spectra are softened and the pulse profiles become more sinusoidal. The …
We have discovered a ~29 keV Cyclotron Resonant Scattering Feature (CRSF) in the X-Ray spectrum of 4U 0352+309 (X Per) using observations taken with the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer. 4U 0352+309 is a persistent low luminosity (L_x = 4.2x10^34 ergs/s) X-ray pulsar, with a 837 s period and which accretes material from the Be star X Per. The X-Ray spectrum, unusual when compared to brighter accreting pulsars, may be due to the low mass accretion rate and could be typical of the new class of persistent low luminosity Be/X-Ray binary pulsars. We attempted spectral fits with continuum models used his…
Results of analysis of RXTE observations of strongly absorbed X-ray sources IGR J16318-4848 and IGR J16358-4726 are presented. Careful subtraction of Galactic ridge emission contribution to the observed spectra of RXTE/PCA allowed us to obtain the spectra of the sources in 3-25 keV energy band. Spectra of the sources cold be well described by a power law with photoabsorption. It is shown that the value of absorption column in the case of RXTE observation of IGR J16318-4848 performed on March 14.1, 2003 is somewhat higher that that obtained by XMM observatory on Feb 10.7 2003. This could imply …
We report on a simultaneous Chandra and RossiXTE observation of the low-mass X-ray binary atoll bursting source MXB 1728-34 performed on 2002 March 3-5. We fit the 1.2-35 keV continuum spectrum with a blackbody plus a Comptonized component. Large residuals at 6-10 keV can be fitted by a broad (FWHM ~ 2 keV) Gaussian emission line or, alternatively, by two absorption edges associated with lowly ionized iron and Fe XXV/XXVI at ~7.1 keV and ~9 keV, respectively. In this interpretation, we find no evidence of broad, or narrow, emission lines between 6 and 7 keV. We test our alternative modelling o…
We present an analysis of the 2-150 keV spectrum of the transient X-ray pulsar V0332+53 taken with the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) in 2004 December. We report on the detection of three cyclotron resonance features at 27, 51, and 74 keV in the phase-averaged data, corresponding to a polar magnetic field of 2.7 x 10^12 G. After 4U0115+63, this makes V0332+53 the second accreting neutron star in which more than two cyclotron lines have been detected; this has now also been confirmed by INTEGRAL. Pulse-phase spectroscopy reveals remarkably little variability of the cyclotron line through th…
Using X-ray data from the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer (RXTE), we carried out pulse timing analysis of the transient X-ray pulsar SAX J2103.5+4545. An outburst was detected by All Sky Monitor (ASM) October 25 1999 and reached a peak X-ray brightness of 27 mCrab October 28. Between November 19 and December 27, the RXTE/PCA carried out pointed observations which provided us with pulse arrival times. These yield an eccentric orbit (e= 0.4 \pm 0.2) with an orbital period of 12.68 \pm 0.25 days and light travel time across the projected semimajor axis of 72 \pm 6 sec. The pulse period was measured t…
We analyze the observations of the transient X-ray pulsar 4U 0115+63 with the RXTE and INTEGRAL observatories in a wide X-ray (3-100 keV) energy band during its intense outbursts in 1999 and 2004. The energy of the fundamental harmonic of the cyclotron resonance absorption line near the maximum of the X-ray flux from the source (luminosity range 5x10^{37} - 2x10^{38} erg/s) is ~11 keV. When the pulsar luminosity falls below ~5x10^{37} erg/s, the energy of the fundamental harmonic is displaced sharply toward the high energies, up to ~16 keV. Under the assumption of a dipole magnetic field confi…
We present spectral variations of the binary X-ray pulsar LMC X-4 observed with the RXTE/PCA during different phases of its 30.5 day long third period. Only out of eclipse data were used for this study. The 3-25 keV spectrum, modeled with high energy cut-off power-law and iron line emission is found to show strong dependence on the intensity state. Correlations between the Fe line emission flux and different parameters of the continuum are presented here.
X-ray observations of the accreting X-ray pulsar 4U~1907+09, obtained during February 1996 with the Proportional Counter Array on the Rossi X-ray Timing Experiment (RXTE), have enabled the first measurement of the intrinsic pulse period Ppulse since 1984: Ppulse=440.341[+0.012,-0.017] s. 4U 1907+09 is in a binary system with a blue supergiant. The orbital parameters were solved and this enabled the correction for orbital delay effects of a measurement of Ppulse obtained in 1990 with Ginga. Thus, three spin down rates could be extracted from four pulse periods obtained in 1983, 1984, 1990, and …
We present an analysis of the X-ray variability of three symbiotic X-ray binaries, GX 1+4, 4U 1700+24, and 4U 1954+31, using observations made with the Swift Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) and the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) All-Sky Monitor (ASM). Observations of 4U 1954+31 with the Swift BAT show modulation at a period near 5 hours. Models to explain this modulation are discussed including the presence of an exceptionally slow X-ray pulsar in the system and accretion instabilities. We conclude that the most likely interpretation is that 4U 1954+31 contains one of the slowest known X-ray p…
We present new X-ray observations of the high mass X-ray binary (HMXRB) pulsar OAO 1657-415, obtained during one orbital period (10.44 days) with the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer (RXTE). Using the binary orbital parameters, obtained from Burst and Transient Source Experiment (BATSE) observations, we resolve the fluctuations in the pulse frequency at time scales on the order of one day for the first time. Recent BATSE results showed that OAO 1657-415 has spin-up/down trends in its pulse frequency time series, without any correlation with the X-luminosity at energies $>$20 keV (Baykal 1997). In t…
Results of a 4 year monitoring campaign of the SMC using the Rossi X-ray timing Explorer (RXTE) are presented. This large dataset makes possible detailed investigation of a significant sample of SMC X-ray binaries. 8 new X-ray pulsars were discovered and a total of 20 different systems were detected. Spectral and timing parameters were obtained for 18. In the case of 10 pulsars, repeated outbursts were observed, allowing determination of candidate orbital periods for these systems. We also discuss the spatial and pulse period distributions of the SMC pulsars.
The high mass X-ray binary pulsar 4U 1538-52 was observed between July 31 and August 7, 2003. Using these observations, we determined new orbital epochs for both circular and elliptical orbit models. The orbital epochs for both orbit solutions agreed with each other and yielded an orbital period derivative $\dot{P} / P = (0.4 \pm 1.8) \times 10^{-6}$ yr$^{-1}$. This value is consistent with the earlier measurement of $\dot{P} / P = (2.9 \pm 2.1) \times 10^{-6}$ yr$^{-1}$ at the $1 σ$ level and gives only an upper limit to the orbital period decay. Our determination of the pulse frequency showe…
We report on a simultaneous Chandra and RossiXTE observation of the LMXB atoll bursting source 4U 1728-34 performed on 2002 March 3-5. We fitted the 1.2-35 keV continuum spectrum with a blackbody plus a Comptonized component. An overabundance of Si by a factor of ~2 with respect to Solar abundance is required for a satisfactory fit. Large residuals at 6-10 keV can be fitted by a broad (FWHM ~ 1.6 keV) Gaussian emission line, or, alternatively, by absorption edges associated with Fe I and Fe XXV at ~7.1 keV and ~9 keV, respectively. In this interpretation, we find no evidence of a broad, or nar…
We report on the first detection of the Vela pulsar in the near-infrared with the VLT/ISAAC in the Js and H bands. The pulsar magnitudes are Js=22.71 +/- 0.10 and H=22.04 +/- 0.16. We compare our results with the available multiwavelength data and show that the dereddened phase-averaged optical spectrum of the pulsar can be fitted with a power law F_nu propto nu^(-alpha_nu) with alpha_nu = 0.12 +/- 0.05, assuming the color excess E(B-V)=0.055 +/-0.005 based on recent spectral fits of the emission of the Vela pulsar and its supernova remnant in X-rays. The negative slope of the pulsar spectrum …
