Early-type dwarf galaxies are the most common type of galaxies observed in the Universe. The origin of this kind of systems is still not well understood. The aim of this paper is to investigate whether the different locations of dwarf galaxies with respect to ellipticals in the face-on view of the fundamental plane could be due to the transformation of bright disc galaxies in low-mass systems by harassment. We have run high-resolution N-body numerical simulations to test the tidal stripping scenario of the dE galaxies. The present simulations modelled several individual tidal stripping events on initial disc-like galaxy models with different bulge-to-disc mass ratios. Tidal stripping is a very efficient mechanism for removing stars and dark matter particles from galaxies. The particles of the disc and halo components were easily stripped, while the bulge not. Thus, the scale length of the discs were 40-50% shorter than the initial ones. Prograde tidal interactions create tidal features like stable bars in the discs of the galaxies. After several tidal interactions the galaxy remnants looks like a dwarf spheroidal system. Simulated galaxies with initial large B/D ratios are closer to the face-on view of the fundamental plane defined by bright E and bulges of early-type galaxies. Nevertheless, galaxies with initial small B/D ratio are located, after four fast tidal encounters, at the position of dE galaxies in the face-on view of the fundamental plane. We conclude that fast galaxy-galaxy interactions are efficient mechanisms for transforming bright galaxies in dwarf ones. Indeed, the different location observed between Es and dEs in the face-on view of the fundamental plane can be explained by the formation of dwarf galaxies by harassment of late-type bright ones.
We review the systematic properties of ``dwarf'' elliptical (dE) galaxies, focussing on the relation between ``normal'' and ``dwarf'' ellipticals. In recent years, this relation has been described as ``dichotomy'' -- based essentially on a discontinuity in central surface brightness. We show that, outside of 300 pc from the centre, the Sérsic profile parameters vary continuously from ``normal'' to ``dwarf'' ellipticals. The ``dichotomy'' is indeed restricted to the very central part, where differences also exist among ``normal'' ellipticals (E). Bright, nucleated dE's closely resemble ``normal…
Narrow band photometry is presented on 27 dwarf ellipticals in the Fornax cluster. Calibrated with Galactic globular cluster data and spectrophotometric population models, the colors indicated that dwarf ellipticals have a mean [Fe/H] of -1.00+/-0.28 ranging from -1.6 to -0.4. The mean age of dwarf ellipticals, also determined photometrically, is estimated at 10+/-1 Gyrs compared to 13 Gyrs for bright Fornax ellipticals. Comparison of our metallicity color and Mg_2 indices demonstrates that the [Mg/Fe] ratio is lower in dwarf ellipticals than their more massive cousins, which is consistent wit…
This article reviews the popular reasons for the belief that dwarf elliptical galaxies and (ordinary) elliptical galaxies are distinct and separate species. They include: light-profile shape (or similarly image concentration); the magnitude-central surface brightness diagram; the magnitude-effective surface brightness diagram (or similarly the magnitude-effective radius diagram); and the Fundamental Plane. It is shown how a continuous trend between luminosity and a) light-profile shape, and b) central surface brightness (until the onest of core formation at M_B ~ -20.5 mag, results in a unific…
We present a discovery of a giant stellar halo in NGC 6822, a dwarf irregular galaxy in the Local Group. This halo is mostly made of old red giants, showing striking features: 1) it is several times larger than the main body of the galaxy seen in the optical images, and 2) it is elongated in the direction almost perpendicular to the HI disk of NGC 6822. The structure of this stellar halo looks similar to the shape of dwarf elliptical galaxies, indicating that the halos of dwarf irregular galaxies share the same origin with those of the dwarf elliptical galaxies.
Using imaging from the Hubble Space Telescope, we derive surface brightness profiles for ultra-compact dwarfs in the Fornax cluster and for the nuclei of dwarf elliptical galaxies in the Virgo cluster. Ultra-compact dwarfs are more extended and have higher surface brightnesses than typical dwarf nuclei, while the luminosities, colors, and sizes of the nuclei are closer to those of Galactic globular clusters. This calls into question the production of ultra-compact dwarfs via ``threshing'' whereby the lower surface brightness envelope of a dwarf elliptical is removed by tidal processes, leaving…
We have run high resolution N-body models simulating the encounter of a dwarf galaxy with a bright elliptical galaxy. The dwarf absorbs orbital angular momentum and shows counter-rotating features in the external regions of the galaxy. To explain the core-envelope kinematic decoupling observed in some dwarf galaxies in high-density environments requires nearly head-on collisions and very little dark matter bound to the dwarf. These kinematic structures appear under rather restrictive conditions. As a consequence, in a cluster like Virgo ~1% of dwarf galaxies may present counter-rotation formed…
We present UBVRI surface photometry for 16 dwarf elliptical galaxies in the Virgo Cluster with previously measured kinematic properties. The global optical colors are red, with median values for the sample of 0.24 +/- 0.03 in (U-B), 0.77 +/- 0.02 in (B-V), and 1.02 +/- 0.03 in (V-I). We recover the well known color-magnitude relation for cluster galaxies, but find no significant difference in dominant stellar population between rotating and non-rotating dwarf elliptical galaxies; the average age of the dominant stellar population is 5-7 Gyr in all 16 galaxies in this sample. Analysis of optica…
Dwarf ellipticals have the lowest stellar densities of any galaxies, but paradoxically are most common in the densest regions of the universe, and are especially frequent in rich clusters of galaxies. Simple estimates suggest that low luminosity dwarf ellipticals should be subject to substantial tidal heating in rich clusters if most of their mass is in the form of normal stars. We have therefore undertaken a program to image dwarfs in clusters with the 3.5-m high performance WIYN, ARC and smaller, wide field telescopes. Our objectives include testing for evidence of tidal disruption in the fo…
In this Paper we investigate the kinematical properties of early-type dwarfs by significantly enlarging the scarce observational sample so far available. We present rotation curves and mean velocity dispersions for four bright dwarf ellipticals and two dwarf lenticular galaxies in the Virgo cluster. Most of these galaxies exhibit conspicuous rotation curves. In particular, five out of the six new galaxies are found to be close to the predictions for oblate spheroids flattened by rotation. Therefore, and contrary to the previous observational hints, the present data suggest that an important fr…
We present kinematics and stellar population properties of 17 dwarf early-type galaxies in the luminosity range -14> M_B> -19. Our sample fills the gap between the intensively studied giant elliptical and Local Group dwarf spheroidal galaxies. The dwarf ellipticals of the present sample have constant velocity dispersion profiles within their effective radii and do not show significant rotation, hence are clearly anisotropic. The dwarf lenticulars, instead, rotate faster and are, at least partially, supported by rotation. From optical Lick absorption indices, we derive metallicities and element…
The present work is aimed at studying the distribution of galaxies of different types and luminosities along different structural scaling relations to see whether massive and dwarf ellipticals have been shaped by the same formation process. This exercise is here done by comparing the distribution of Virgo cluster massive and dwarf ellipticals and star forming galaxies along the B band effective surface brightness and effective radius vs. absolute magnitude relations and the Kormendy relation to the predictions of models tracing the effects of ram-pressure stripping on disc galaxies entering th…
Recent observations demonstrate that dwarf elliptical (dE) galaxies in clusters, despite their faintness, are likely a critical galaxy type for understanding the processes behind galaxy formation. Dwarf ellipticals are the most common galaxy type, and are particularly abundant in rich galaxy clusters. The dwarf to giant ratio is in fact highest in rich clusters of galaxies, suggesting that cluster dEs do not form in groups that later merge to form clusters. Dwarf ellipticals are potentially the only galaxy type whose formation is sensitive to global, rather than local, environment. The dominan…
Keck spectroscopy is presented for four dwarf elliptical galaxies in the Virgo Cluster. At this distance, the mean velocity and velocity dispersion are well resolved as a function of radius between 100 to 1000 pc, allowing a clear separation between nuclear and surrounding galaxy light. We find a variety of dispersion profiles for the inner regions of these objects, and show that none of these galaxies is rotationally flattened.
Many ellipticals contain nuclear disks of dust and gas. Some ellipticals contain nuclear disks of stars that are distinct from the rest of the galaxy. We show that the dwarf E2 galaxy NGC 4486A contains both -- it is a "Rosetta stone" object that tells us how nuclear disks evolve. Its properties suggest that, as accreted gas dissipates and settles toward the center, it forms stars and builds a stellar disk. Secular growth may explain not only the most distinct nuclear disks such as those in NGC 4486A but also some of the disky distortions that are commonly seen in elliptical galaxies. That is,…
We present narrow band photometry of 91 dwarf ellipticals in the Coma and Fornax clusters taken through the Stromgren (uvby) filter system. Dividing the sample by dwarf morphology into nucleated (dEN) and non-nucleated (dE) dwarfs reveals two distinct populations of early-type systems based on integrated colors. The class of dEN galaxies are redder in their continuum colors as compared to bright cluster ellipticals and dE type dwarfs, and their position in multi-color diagrams can only be explained by an older mean age for their underlying stellar populations. By comparison with the narrow ban…
We present narrow band data on dwarf ellipticals in nearby (Virgo, Fornax) and intermediate redshift clusters (A2125, A2218) in order to study their mean age and metallicities. In all four clusters, nucleated dwarf ellipticals display colors that place them on the high metallicity end of the Milky Way globular cluster sequence. Normal dwarf ellipticals display colors, and resulting metallicities and ages, that align them with bright ellipticals. This suggests that dE,N's may be the ancestors to the red GC population found around many elliptical galaxies.
It is shown that bright cluster dwarf ellipticals follow a relation between metallicity and apparent flattening. Rounder dwarfs tend to be more metal-rich. The evidence is based on colour as well as spectroscopic line-strength data from the literature. The large scatter of dEs around the mean metallicity-luminosity relation, usually ascribed to large observational errors, turns out to be an ellipticity effect. In the magnitude range $-14 \ga M_B \ga -18$ the metallicity of dEs depends more strongly on ellipticity than luminosity. A possible explanation is that galaxies with masses around $10^{…
We report the discovery of a compact object (R_e = 32 pc, M_B = -12.34 mag) at a projected distance of 9 kpc from Messier 59, a giant elliptical in the Virgo cluster. Using HST imaging and SDSS spectroscopy, both available in the Virtual Observatory, we find that this object has a blue core containing one-quarter of the light, and a redder n=1 Sersic envelope, as well as luminosity-weighted age of 9.3 +/- 1.4 Gyr, a metallicity of -0.03 +/- 0.04 dex and a velocity dispersion of 48 +/- 5 km/s. While ultra-compact dwarfs (UCDs) in the face-on view of the Fundamental Plane are found to form a seq…
The potential of the Surface Brightness Fluctuation (SBF) method to determine distances to dwarf ellipticals in nearby clusters is investigated. We find that for the Fornax cluster, the SBF method yields reliable results down to very faint magnitudes, in our case down to M_V ~- 11 mag when observing for about 1 hour at good seeing with an 8m-class telescope in the I-filter. Comparison between real and simulated data for the Centaurus Cluster shows that our simulations do not overestimate the achievable S/N of the SBF method.
We study the evolution of dwarf (L_H < 10^{9.6} L_Ho) star forming and quiescent galaxies in the Virgo cluster by comparing their UV to radio centimetric properties to the predictions of multizone chemo-spectrophotometric models of galaxy evolution especially tuned to take into account the perturbations induced by the interaction with the cluster intergalactic medium. Our models simulate one or multiple ram pressure stripping events and galaxy starvation. Models predict that all star forming dwarf galaxies entering the cluster for the first time loose most, if not all, of their atomic gas cont…
We simulate the dynamical, chemical, and spectro-photometric evolution of dwarf and normal elliptical galaxies embedded in a dark matter halo, using a three-dimensional N-body/SPH simulation code. For the forming dwarf elliptical galaxies, supernova-driven winds propagating outwards from inside the system collide with the infalling gas and produce the super-shell in which stars are formed. The resulting stellar system forms a loosely bound virialized system due to the significant mass loss and has a large velocity dispersion and a large core. Consequently the surface brightness distribution sh…
Globular clusters (GCs) provide one way of determining when the most important periods of star formation in dwarf elliptical (dE) galaxies occurred. Thus, they are also useful for comparing the star formation histories of dwarf and giant galaxies. We present results on the GC systems of 24 nearby dE galaxies imaged with the Hubble Space Telescope. We find that the specific GC frequency, S_N, increases with M_V. Also, S_N in dEs is more like the values found in giant ellipticals rather than in spirals, and the mean S_N for nucleated dEs is roughly a factor of 2 higher than for non-nucleated dEs…
We present preliminary results of an extensive study of the fundamental properties of dwarf elliptical galaxies (dEs) in the Coma cluster. Our study will combine HST surface photometry with ground-based UBRIJK photometry and optical spectroscopy. The combined data set will be used to investigate the intrinsic correlations among global parameters in cluster dEs, including the Fundamental Plane, the color-magnitude relation, the Faber-Jackson and Kormendy relation, and velocity dispersion versus line strength indices. These empirical correlations have provided important constraints to theoretica…
{\it Hubble Space Telescope} (\hst) Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 ({\it WFPC2}) images of the Virgo Cluster dwarf elliptical galaxy VCC 128 reveal an apparently double nucleus. The two components, which are separated by $\sim 32$ pc in projection, have the same magnitude and color. We present a spectrum of this double nucleus and show that it is inconsistent with one or both components being emission-line background objects or foreground stars. The most likely interpretation is that, as suggested by \citet{lauer_etal_96} for the double nucleus in NGC 4486B, we are seeing a nuclear disk surroun…
We present the results of spectroscopic observations of 10 nucleated dwarf elliptical galaxies (dE's) in the Fornax cluster. The blue spectra of Fornax dE galaxies indicate a wide range of metallicities at a given luminosity, similar to those of intermediate to \it metal-rich globular clusters. Metal abundances derived in this paper are well correlated with optical colors and agree with previous spectroscopic results. A discrepancy with metallicities inferred from infrared colors is evident; possible causes include an intermediate age population and dilution of spectral features by a blue ligh…
New observations of 16 dwarf elliptical galaxies in the Virgo Cluster indicate that at least seven dEs have significant velocity gradients along their optical major axis, with typical rotation amplitudes of 20-30 km/s. Of the remaining nine galaxies in this sample, 6 have velocity gradients less than 20 km/s kpc^{-1} while the other 3 observations had too low of a signal--to--noise ratio to determine an accurate velocity gradient. Typical velocity dispersions for these galaxies are ~44 +/- 5 km/s, indicating that rotation can be a significant component of the stellar dynamics of Virgo dEs. Whe…
This paper is the first in a series in which we present the results of an ESO Large Program on the kinematics and internal dynamics of dwarf elliptical galaxies (dEs). We investigate the relations between the parameters that quantify the structure and internal dynamics of dEs such as the Faber_Jackson relation and the Fundamental Plane (FP). We show that the dE sequences in the various diagrams are disjunct from those traced by bright and intermediate-luminosity elliptical galaxies and bulges of spirals. It appears that semi-analytical models (SAMs) are able to reproduce the position of the dE…
We measure the apparent shapes for a sample of 62 blue compact dwarf galaxies (BCDs), and compare them with the apparent shapes for a sample of 80 dwarf elliptical galaxies (dEs). The BCDs are flatter, on average, than the dEs, but the difference is only marginally significant. We then use both non-parametric and parametric techniques to determine possible distributions of intrinsic shapes for the BCDs. The hypothesis that BCDs are oblate spheroids can be ruled out with a high confidence level ($> 99%$), but the hypothesis that they are prolate spheroids cannot be excluded. The apparent shapes…
We present the 2-D photometric decomposition of the Virgo galaxy IC3328. The analysis of the global light distribution of this morphologically classified nucleated dwarf elliptical galaxy (dE1,N) reveals a tightly wound, bi-symmetric spiral structure with a diameter of 4.5 kpc, precisely centered on the nucleus of the dwarf. The amplitude of the spiral is only three percent of the dwarf's surface brightness making it the faintest and smallest spiral ever found in a galaxy. In terms of pitch angle and arm winding the spiral is similar to the intermediate-type galaxy M51, but it lacks the dust a…
We present the results of BVRI imaging and optical spectroscopy of the dwarf galaxy A0951+68. The images reveal that, although this galaxy is classified as a dwarf elliptical, it has some properties that are similar to dwarf irregular galaxies. It contains two bright knots of emission, one of which is red and unresolved and the other blue and resolved. The blue knot also shows a high excitation emission line spectrum. The observed line ratios indicate that this is an HII region, although with some line ratios that are border-line with those in AGN. The emission line luminosity is consistent wi…
We present the surface photometry of star clusters in the nearby dwarf elliptical galaxies NGC 185 and NGC 205, obtained from deep HST WFPC2 F555W (V) and F814W (I) images. We have obtained surface brightness and color profiles of six star clusters in NGC 185, seven star clusters in NGC 205, and one recently discovered non-stellar object in NGC 205. The surface brightness profiles of ten star clusters are fitted well by the King model, and those of four star clusters are fitted well by the power-law. Three out of ten star clusters fitted well with King model show signs of tidal tails.
We have analyzed archival HST F606W images of 18 dwarf elliptical (dE) galaxy candidates in the Coma Cluster. We model the full radial extent of their light-profiles by simultaneously fitting a PSF-convolved Sersic R^(1/n) model and, when necessary, either a central point-source or a central PSF-convolved Gaussian. The luminosities of the central component L_nuc scale with the host galaxy luminosity L_gal such that L_nuc = 10^(4.76 +/- 0.10)*(L_gal/10^7)^(0.87 +/- 0.26). The underlying host galaxies display systematic departures from an exponential model that are correlated with the model-inde…
n many nucleated dwarf elliptical galaxies (dE,N's), the nucleus is offset by a significant fraction of the scale radius with respect to the center of the outer isophotes. Using a high-resolution N-body simulation, we demonstrate that the nucleus can be driven off-center by the m=1 counterstreaming instability, which is strong in flattened stellar systems with zero rotation. The model develops a nuclear offset on the order of 30% of the exponential scale length. We compare our numerical results with the photometry and kinematics of FCC 046, a Fornax Cluster dE,N with a nucleus offset by 1.2" w…
Numerical simulations of galaxy mergers are a powerful tool to study these fundamental events in the hierarchical built-up of galaxies. Recent progress have been made owing to improved modeling, increased resolution and large statistical samples. We present here the highest-resolution models of mergers performed so far. The formation of a variety of substructures ranging from kinematically decoupled cores to globular-like clusters is directly resolved. In a resolution study, we show that the large-scale structure of elliptical-like merger remnants can be affected by the resolution, and a too m…
We present photometric and kinematic evidence for the presence of stellar disks, seen practically edge-on, in two Fornax dwarf galaxies, FCC204 (dS0(6)) and FCC288 (dS0(7)). This is the first time such structures have been identified in Fornax dwarfs. FCC2088 has only a small bulge and a bright flaring and slightly warped disk that can be traced out to 23" from the center (2.05 kpc for H_0=75 km/s/Mpc). FCC204's disk can be traced out to 20" (1.78 kpc). This galaxy possesses a large bulge. These results can be compared to the findings of Jerjen et al. (2000) and Barazza et al. (2002) who disco…
We present the first 3D observations of a diffuse elliptical galaxy (dE). The good quality data (S/N up to 40) reveal the kinematical signature of an embedded stellar disc, reminiscent of what is commonly observed in elliptical galaxies, though similarity of their origins is questionable. Colour map built from HST ACS images confirms the presence of this disc. Its characteristic scale (about 3 arcsec = 250 pc) is about a half of galaxy's effective radius, and its metallicity is 0.1-0.2 dex larger than the underlying population. Fitting the spectra with synthetic single stellar populations (SSP…
We report discovery of young embedded structures in three diffuse elliptical galaxies (dE) in the Virgo cluster: IC 783, IC 3468, and IC 3509. We performed 3D spectroscopic observations of these galaxies using the MPFS spectrograph at the Russian 6-m telescope, and obtained spatially resolved distributions of kinematical and stellar population parameters by fitting high-resolution PEGASE.HR synthetic single stellar populations (SSP) in the pixel space. In all three galaxies, the luminosity weighted age of the nuclei, about 4 Gyr, is considerably younger than population in the outer regions of …
We derive the light profiles for a sample of 25 dwarf elliptical galaxies observed by us with HST/WFPC2 in F555W and F814W. These profiles are fitted with Nuker, R^1/4, exponential, and Sersic laws, and are also used to derive the nuclear cusp slopes gamma. We discuss the correlation of nuclear cusp slope with galactic luminosity, presence of a nucleus, and type of light profile. The results are compared to those found in the literature for elliptical galaxies and the bulges of spiral galaxies. We find that as a class the nuclear regions of dwarf ellipticals are very similar to those of the ex…
The Surface Brightness Fluctuation method has been shown to be a powerful distance indicator for dwarf elliptical galaxies to very low surface brightness levels. It is applicable to stellar systems that are out of reach for classical indicators requiring resolved stellar populations such as the tip magnitude of the red giant branch. I briefly discuss a few results from recent SBF studies of dEs to demonstrate the significance of the SBF method to address long-standing issues related to cosmography, dark matter in galaxy groups, substructures in clusters, and the discrepancy between the mass fu…
Dwarf elliptical (dE) galaxies, with blue absolute magnitudes typically fainter than $M_B = -16$, are the most numerous type of galaxy in the nearby universe. Tremendous advances have been made over the past several years in delineating the properties of both Local Group satellite dE's and the large dE populations of nearby clusters. We review some of these advances, with particular attention to how well currently available data can constrain 1) models for the formation of dE's, 2) the physical and evolutionary connections between different types of galaxies (nucleated and nonnucleated dE's, c…
{We present, for the first time, photometric and kinematical evidence, obtained with FORS2 on the VLT, for the existence of kinematically decoupled cores (KDCs) in two dwarf elliptical galaxies; FS76 in the NGC5044 group and FS373 in the NGC3258 group. Both kinematically peculiar subcomponents rotate in the same sense as the main body of their host galaxy but betray their presence by a pronounced bump in the rotation velocity profiles at a radius of about 1". The KDC in FS76 rotates at 10+/-3km/s, with the host galaxy rotating at 15+/-6km/s; the KDC in FS373 has a rotation velocity of 6+/-2km/…
We describe the properties and kinematics of the neutral gas in the two dwarf elliptical galaxies NGC 185 and NGC 205, companions of M31. The kinematics of the HI suggest that an internal origin for the gas (i.e. stellar mass loss) should be considered, at least in the case of NGC 185. The molecular clouds in these dwarf ellipticals are similar to Galactic giant molecular clouds in many ways. However, the HI column density in the dwarf ellipticals is surprisingly low. A lower interstellar UV field may make it easier to form and retain molecular gas in the dwarf ellipticals than in the solar ne…
We present the discovery of a peculiar blue core in the elliptical galaxy IC 225 by using images and spectrum from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). The outer parts of the surface brightness profiles of u-, g-, r-, i- and z-band SDSS images for IC 225 are well fitted with an exponential function. The fitting results show that IC 225 follows the same relations between the magnitude, scale length and central surface brightness for dwarf elliptical galaxies. Its absolute blue magnitude (M_B) is -17.14 mag, all of which suggest that IC 225 is a typical dwarf elliptical galaxy. The g-r color pro…
We present new estimates of ages and metallicities, based on FORS/VLT optical (4400-5500A) spectroscopy, of 16 dwarf elliptical galaxies (dE's) in the Fornax Cluster and in Southern Groups. These dE's are more metal-rich and younger than previous estimates based on narrow-band photometry and low-resolution spectroscopy. For our sample we find a mean metallicity [Z/H] = -0.33 dex and mean age 3.5 Gyr, consistent with similar samples of dE's in other environments (Local Group, Virgo). Three dE's in our sample show emission lines and very young ages. This suggests that some dE's formed stars unti…
Dwarf galaxies, as the most numerous type of galaxy, offer the potential to study galaxy formation and evolution in detail in the nearby Universe. Although they seem to be simple systems at first view, they remain poorly understood. In an attempt to alleviate this situation, the MAGPOP EU Research and Training Network embarked on a study of dwarf galaxies named MAGPOP-ITP (Peletier et al., 2007). In this paper, we present the analysis of a sample of 24 dwarf elliptical galaxies (dEs) in the Virgo Cluster and in the field, using optical long-slit spectroscopy. We examine their stellar populatio…
The specific globular cluster frequencies (S_N) for 24 dwarf elliptical (dE) galaxies in the Virgo and Fornax Clusters and the Leo Group imaged with the Hubble Space Telescope are presented. Combining all available data, we find that for nucleated dEs --- which are spatially distributed like giant ellipticals in galaxy clusters --- S_N(dE,N)=6.5 +- 1.2 and S_N increases with M_V, while for non-nucleated dEs --- which are distributed like late-type galaxies --- S_N(dE,noN)=3.1 +- 0.5 and there is little or no trend with M_V. The S_N values for dE galaxies are thus on average significantly highe…
Deep CCD photometry and positions for a new sample of $\simeq 250$ dwarf elliptical (dE) galaxies in the Coma cluster core are analyzed. A significant color gradient is detected in their projected radial distribution, given by $Δ(B$--$R)/Δ(\log R_{\rm cc}) = -0.08\pm0.02$ mag. Calibrating these dE galaxies against Galactic globular clusters yields a corresponding metallicity gradient which goes as $Z \propto R_{\rm cc}^{-0.29}$. Simulations reveal that this gradient in the projected radial distribution corresponds to a true (three-dimensional) radial color gradient which goes as $Δ(B$--$R)/Δ(\…
Spectrophotometry and imaging of the two planetary nebulae He2-436 and Wray16-423, recently discovered to be in the Sagittarius dwarf elliptical galaxy, are presented. Wray16-423 is a high excitation planetary nebula (PN) with a hot central star. In contrast He2-436 is a high density PN with a cooler central star and evidence of local dust, the extinction exceeding that for Wray16-423 by E(B-V)=0.28. The extinction to Wray16-423, (E(B-V)=0.14), is consistent with the extinction to the Sagittarius (Sgr) Dwarf. Both PN show Wolf-Rayet features in their spectra, although the lines are weak in Wra…
The globular cluster luminosity function, specific globular cluster frequency, S_N, specific globular cluster mass, T_MP, and globular cluster mass fraction in dwarf elliptical galaxies are explored using the full 69 galaxy sample of the HST WFPC2 Dwarf Elliptical Galaxy Snapshot Survey. The GCLFs of the dEs are well-represented with a t_5 function with a peak at M_{V,Z}^0(dE,HST) = -7.3 +/- 0.1. This is ~0.3 magnitudes fainter than the GCLF peaks in giant spiral and elliptical galaxies, but the results are consistent within the uncertainties. The bright-end slope of the luminosity distributio…
We present three-integral dynamical models for the three Local Group dwarf elliptical galaxies: NGC147, NGC185, and NGC205. It is the first time models are constructed for the Local Group dEs that allow for the presence of dark matter at large radii and that are constrained by kinematics out to at least one half-light radius. The B-band mass-to-light ratios of all three galaxies are rather similar, (M/L)_B = 3-4. Within the inner two half-light radii, about 40-50% of the mass is in the form of dark matter, so dEs contain about as much dark matter as bright ellipticals. NGC205 and NGC147 have a…
The aim of this paper is to cast light on the formation and evolution of elliptical galaxies by means of N-body/hydro-dynamical simulations that include star formation, feed-back and chemical evolution. Particular attention is paid to the case of dwarf spheroidals of the Local Group which, thanks to their proximity and modern ground-based and space instrumentation, can be resolved into single stars so that independent determinations of their age and star formation history can be derived. Dwarf galaxies are known to exhibit complicated histories of star formation ranging from a single very old …
We present BVRI CCD surface photometry for the central (6'.35 X 6'.35) regions of the dwarf elliptical galaxies NGC 185 and NGC 205 in the Local Group. Surface brightness profiles of NGC 185 (R < 225") and NGC 205 (R < 186") show excess components in the central regions. The colors of NGC 185 get bluer inward at R < 25", while they remain constant at R >= 25". The colors of NGC 205 get bluer inward at 1" < R < 50", and remain flat outside. Our photometry, supplemented by the photometry based on the far-ultraviolet and visual images of the HST archive data, shows that there is an inversion of c…
We present the results of a Keck spectroscopic study of globular clusters associated with the Virgo Cluster dwarf elliptical VCC 1386. We analyze blue spectroscopic absorption lines from 3500-5500 A for 13 globular cluster candidates and confirm that five are associated with VCC 1386. By comparing metal and Balmer line indices of these globular clusters with alpha-enhanced single stellar population models we find that these systems are metal poor with [Fe/H] < -1.35 and old, with ages > 5 Gyr at 3 sigma confidence, placing their formation at z >1. This is one of the first spectroscopic studies…
We present the result of a photometric and Keck-LRIS spectroscopic study of dwarf galaxies in the core of the Perseus Cluster, down to a magnitude of M_B = -12.5. Spectra were obtained for twenty-three dwarf-galaxy candidates, from which we measure radial velocities and stellar population characteristics from absorption line indices. From radial velocities obtained using these spectra we confirm twelve systems as cluster members, with the remaining eleven as non-members. Using these newly confirmed cluster members, we are able to extend the confirmed colour-magnitude relation for the Perseus C…
(Abridged version) Mayall II = G1 is one of the brightest globular clusters belonging to M31, the Andromeda galaxy. Our observations with HST/WFPC2 provide data for the (I vs. V-I) and (V vs. V-I) color-magnitude diagrams. From model fitting, we determine a rather high mean metallicity of [Fe/H] = --0.95 +- 0.09, somewhat similar to 47 Tucanae. We find a larger spread in V-I than can be explained by the measurement errors, and we attribute this to an intrinsic metallicity dispersion amongst the stars of G1. So far, only omega Centauri, the giant Galactic globular cluster, has been known to exh…
We have obtained HST WFPC2 images through the F555W and F814W filters of two M81 group dE's: BK5N and a new system, designated F8D1. The resulting color-magnitude diagrams show the upper two magnitudes of the red giant branch. Surface brightness and total magnitude measurements indicate that BK5N and F8D1 have similar central surface brightness (24.5 and 25.4 mag/arcsec^2 in V, respectively), but F8D1's larger length scale results in it being 3 magnitudes more luminous than BK5N. BK5N lies on the relation between central surface brightness and absolute magnitude defined by Local Group dwarf el…
We present spatially-resolved internal kinematics and stellar chemical abundances for a sample of dwarf elliptical (dE) galaxies in the Virgo Cluster observed with Keck/ESI. We find that 4 out of 17 dEs have major axis rotation velocities consistent with rotational flattening, while the remaining dEs have no detectable major axis rotation. Despite this difference in internal kinematics, rotating and non-rotating dEs are remarkably similar in terms of their position in the Fundamental Plane, morphological structure, stellar populations, and local environment. We present evidence for faint under…
The presence of black holes (BHs) at the centers of dwarf elliptical galaxies (dEs) has been argued both theoretically and observationally. Using archival HST/WFPC2 data, we found the Virgo cluster dwarf elliptical galaxy VCC128 to harbor a binary nucleus, a feature that is usually interpreted as the observable signature of a stellar disk orbiting a central massive black hole. Debattista et al. 2006 estimated its mass M sim 6 10^6 - 5 10^7 Msun. One of the most robust means of verifying the existence of a BH is radio continuum and/or X-ray emission, however because of the deficiency of gas in …
We present central CaT, PaT, and CaT* indices for a sample of fifteen dwarf elliptical galaxies (dEs). Twelve of these have CaT* ~ 7 A and extend the negative correlation between the CaT* index and central velocity dispersion sigma, which was derived for bright ellipticals (Es), down to 20 < sigma < 55 km/s. For five dEs we have independent age and metallicity estimates. Four of these have CaT* ~ 7 A, much higher than expected from their low metallicities (-1.5 < [Z/H] < -0.5). The observed anti-correlation of CaT* as a function of sigma or Z is in flagrant disagreement with theory. We discuss…
Keck/ESI spectroscopy is presented for six Virgo Cluster dwarf elliptical (dE) galaxies. The mean line-of-sight velocity and velocity dispersion are resolved as a function of radius along the major axis of each galaxy, nearly doubling the total number of dEs with spatially-resolved stellar kinematics. None of the observed objects shows evidence of strong rotation: upper limits on v_rot/sigma are well below those expected for rotationally-flattened objects. Such limits place strong constraints on dE galaxy formation models. Although these galaxies continue the trend of low rotation velocities o…
