We study the evolution of dwarf (L_H < 10^{9.6} L_Ho) star forming and quiescent galaxies in the Virgo cluster by comparing their UV to radio centimetric properties to the predictions of multizone chemo-spectrophotometric models of galaxy evolution especially tuned to take into account the perturbations induced by the interaction with the cluster intergalactic medium. Our models simulate one or multiple ram pressure stripping events and galaxy starvation. Models predict that all star forming dwarf galaxies entering the cluster for the first time loose most, if not all, of their atomic gas content, quenching on short time scales (< 150 Myr) their activity of star formation. These dwarf galaxies soon become red and quiescent, gas metal-rich objects with spectrophotometric and structural properties similar to those of dwarf ellipticals. Young, low luminosity, high surface brightness star forming galaxies such as late-type spirals and BCDs are probably the progenitors of relatively massive dwarf ellipticals, while it is likely that low surface brightness magellanic irregulars evolve into very low surface brightness quiescent objects hardly detectable in ground based imaging surveys. The small number of dwarf galaxies with physical properties intermediate between those of star forming and quiescent systems is consistent with a rapid (< 1 Gyr) transitional phase between the two dwarf galaxies populations. These results, combined with statistical considerations, are consistent with the idea that most of the dwarf ellipticals dominating the faint end of the Virgo luminosity function were initially star forming systems, accreted by the cluster and stripped of their gas by one or subsequent ram pressure stripping events.
Keck spectroscopy is presented for four dwarf elliptical galaxies in the Virgo Cluster. At this distance, the mean velocity and velocity dispersion are well resolved as a function of radius between 100 to 1000 pc, allowing a clear separation between nuclear and surrounding galaxy light. We find a variety of dispersion profiles for the inner regions of these objects, and show that none of these galaxies is rotationally flattened.
This Letter presents the color distributions of the globular cluster (GC) systems of 12 Virgo elliptical galaxies, measured using data from the Hubble Space Telescope. Bright galaxies with large numbers of detected GC's show two distinct cluster populations with mean V-I colors near 1.01 and 1.26. The GC population of M86 is a clear exception; its color distribution shows a single sharp peak near V-I=1.03. The absence of the red population in this galaxy, and the consistency of the peak colors in the others, may be indications of the origins of the two populations found in most bright elliptic…
We present UBVRI surface photometry for 16 dwarf elliptical galaxies in the Virgo Cluster with previously measured kinematic properties. The global optical colors are red, with median values for the sample of 0.24 +/- 0.03 in (U-B), 0.77 +/- 0.02 in (B-V), and 1.02 +/- 0.03 in (V-I). We recover the well known color-magnitude relation for cluster galaxies, but find no significant difference in dominant stellar population between rotating and non-rotating dwarf elliptical galaxies; the average age of the dominant stellar population is 5-7 Gyr in all 16 galaxies in this sample. Analysis of optica…
Using accurate distances to individual Virgo cluster galaxies obtained by the method of Surface Brightness Fluctuations, we show that Virgo's brightest ellipticals have a remarkably collinear arrangement in three dimensions. This axis, which is inclined by 10 to 15 degrees from the line of sight, can be traced to even larger scales where it appears to join a filamentary bridge of galaxies connecting Virgo to the rich cluster Abell 1367. The orientations of individual Virgo ellipticals also show some tendency to be aligned with the cluster axis, as does the jet of the supergiant elliptical M87.…
We have determined spectroscopic ages of elliptical galaxies in the Virgo cluster using spectra of very high signal-to-noise ratio (S/N/A > 100). We observed 8 galaxies with the Subaru Telescope and have combined this sample with 6 galaxies previously observed with the WHT. To determine their ages we have used a new method based on the Hgamma_sigma age indicator, which is virtually independent of the effects of metallicity. Apart from ages we have estimated abundances of various elements. In this paper we present the observations, the data reduction and the reliability of the Hgamma_sigma meth…
We analyzed a deep Chandra observation of M84, a bright elliptical galaxy in the core of the Virgo cluster. We find that the spatial distribution of the soft X-ray emission is defined by the radio structure of the galaxy. In particular we find two low density regions associated with the radio lobes and surrounded by higher density X-ray filaments. In addition to a central AGN and a population of galactic sources, we find a diffuse hard source filling the central 10 kpc region. Since the morphology of the hard source appears round and is different from that seen in the radio or in soft X-rays, …
NGC 4649 (M60) is one of a handful of giant Virgo ellipticals. We have obtained Gemini/GMOS spectra for 38 GCs associated with this galaxy. Applying the multi-index chi^2 minimisation technique of Proctor & Sansom (2002) with the single stellar population models of Thomas, Maraston & Korn (2004) we derive ages, metallicities and alpha-element abundance ratios. We find several young (2--3 Gyr old) super-solar metallicity GCs, while the majority are old (>10 Gyrs), spanning a range of metallicities from solar to [Z/H]=-2. At least two of these young GCs are at large projected radii of 17-20 kpc.…
The structural properties of a sample of 50 dEs in the Virgo cluster are here derived from Near InfraRed (NIR, H-band 1.65 micron) surface photometry and analysed. One-dimensional surface brightness (SB) profiles are extracted using elliptical isophote fitting. They are characterised by means of structural parameters, namely the half light radius R_e, the average surface brightness within R_e (mu_e), and a concentration index (c_31). We show that typical dEs have close-to-exponential NIR SB distributions. The relations between dEs and giant ellipticals (Es) are investigated by comparing the NI…
We present high-resolution ($1\farcs8$ -- $4\farcs5$) CO data of the Virgo spiral galaxy NGC 4569, obtained using the Nobeyama Millimeter Array. We found that the molecular gas is highly concentrated in the circumnuclear region with two off-center peaks. A CO image with the highest angular resolution of $2\farcs0 \times 1\farcs8$ shows that six blobs likely form a circumnuclear elliptical ring (CER) with a semi-major axis radius of 720 pc. The CER shows a strongly twisted velocity field, and the position--velocity (PV) diagram shows significant forbidden velocity components. These kinetic feat…
New observations of 16 dwarf elliptical galaxies in the Virgo Cluster indicate that at least seven dEs have significant velocity gradients along their optical major axis, with typical rotation amplitudes of 20-30 km/s. Of the remaining nine galaxies in this sample, 6 have velocity gradients less than 20 km/s kpc^{-1} while the other 3 observations had too low of a signal--to--noise ratio to determine an accurate velocity gradient. Typical velocity dispersions for these galaxies are ~44 +/- 5 km/s, indicating that rotation can be a significant component of the stellar dynamics of Virgo dEs. Whe…
I review the status of knowledge about the dwarf galaxies in the Virgo Cluster (VC) concentrating on work published after 1995. I explain the present ideas about the nature and history of the dwarf elliptical galaxies and emphasize the major increments in understanding achieved in the study of the dwarf irregular population. Special attention is given to the samples of late-type dwarf galaxies in the VC studied at the Wise Observatory(BCDs and dIs), and to a comparison of their properties.
We present in this paper the deepest Arecibo HI observations of Virgo cluster dwarf ellipticals (dEs) taken to date. Based on this data we argue that a significant fraction of Virgo cluster dEs recently underwent evolution. Our new observations consist of HI 21-cm line observations for 22 classified dE galaxies with optical radial velocities consistent with membership in the Virgo cluster. Cluster members VCC 390 and VCC 1713 are detected with HI masses M(HI) = 6*10^7 M_solar and 8*10^7 M_solar, respectively, while M(HI) in the remaining 20 dE galaxies have upper limits as low as 5*10^5 M_sola…
We use a 54.4 ks Chandra observation to study nuclear outflow activity in NGC4552 (M89), an elliptical galaxy in the Virgo Cluster. Chandra images in the 0.5-2 keV band show two ring-like features ~1.7 kpc in diameter in the core of NGC4552, as reported previously by Filho et al. We use spherically symmetric point explosion shock models to argue that the shape of the surface brightness profile across the rims of the rings and the temperature of hot gas in the rings are consistent with a Mach 1.7 shock carrying mean mechanical power L_shock ~ 3 x 10^{41} ergs/s produced by a ~1.4 x 10^{55} ergs…
We present a deep VLA search for HI emission from the low-luminosity Virgo Cluster elliptical galaxy NGC 4476, which contains 1.1 x 10^8 M_sun of molecular gas in an undisturbed disk in regular rotation. No HI was detected. The rms noise in the final image corresponds to a 3 sigma column density sensitivity of 1.2 x 10^20 cm^{-2} at the position of NGC 4476, averaged over the 4 kpc beam. The total HI mass is less than 1.5 x 10^7 M_sun. If we compare our HI upper limit to the H_2 content, we find that NGC 4476 is extremely deficient in HI compared to other galaxies detected in these two species…
Long-slit spectroscopy has been obtained for a sample of 22 blue dwarf galaxies selected in the direction of the Virgo Cluster as part of a larger sample of Virgo blue dwarf galaxies for which deep Halpha imaging has been collected. Most of the galaxies in the present sample appear classified as BCDs or dwarf Irregulars in the Virgo Cluster Catalog. Line fluxes, Hbeta equivalent width and extinction coefficients, spatial emission profiles, ionization structure and physical conditions are presented for the galaxies of the sample. Chemical abundances have been derived either using a direct deter…
We have employed FORS1/2+VLT to acquire deep B and R CCD images of 16 dwarf elliptical galaxies in the direction of the Virgo cluster. For each dwarf we measure the R-band surface brightness fluctuation (SBF) magnitude \bar{m}_R and the (B-R) colour in a number of fields at different galactocentric distances. From the field-to-field variation of the two quantities we determine the SBF distance by means of the (B-R)-\bar{M}_R relation. The derived distances of the dwarfs are ranging from 14.9-21.3Mpc, with a mean 1sigma uncertainty of 1.4Mpc, confirming that there is considerable depth in the d…
We report on a complete CCD imaging survey of 226 elliptical galaxies in the North-East quadrant of the Virgo cluster, representative of the properties of giant and dwarf elliptical galaxies in this cluster. We fit their radial light profiles with the Sersic r^(1/n) model of light distribution. We confirm the result of Graham & Guzman (2003) that the apparent dichotomy between E and dE galaxies in the luminosity-<mu>_e plane no longer appears when other structural parameters are considered and can be entirely attributed to the onset of "core" galaxies at B_T sim -20.5 mag. When "core" galaxies…
We present the results of a Keck spectroscopic study of globular clusters associated with the Virgo Cluster dwarf elliptical VCC 1386. We analyze blue spectroscopic absorption lines from 3500-5500 A for 13 globular cluster candidates and confirm that five are associated with VCC 1386. By comparing metal and Balmer line indices of these globular clusters with alpha-enhanced single stellar population models we find that these systems are metal poor with [Fe/H] < -1.35 and old, with ages > 5 Gyr at 3 sigma confidence, placing their formation at z >1. This is one of the first spectroscopic studies…
We review the systematic properties of ``dwarf'' elliptical (dE) galaxies, focussing on the relation between ``normal'' and ``dwarf'' ellipticals. In recent years, this relation has been described as ``dichotomy'' -- based essentially on a discontinuity in central surface brightness. We show that, outside of 300 pc from the centre, the Sérsic profile parameters vary continuously from ``normal'' to ``dwarf'' ellipticals. The ``dichotomy'' is indeed restricted to the very central part, where differences also exist among ``normal'' ellipticals (E). Bright, nucleated dE's closely resemble ``normal…
We have used deep HST/WFPC2 images in V (F606W) and I (F814W) to measure the luminosity distribution of the globular clusters in NGC 4874, the central cD galaxy of the Coma cluster. We find the ``turnover'' point of the globular cluster luminosity function (GCLF) to lie at V = 27.88 +/- 0.12, while the overall GCLF shape matches the standard Gaussian-like form with dispersion SIGMA_V = 1.49 +/- 0.12. We use the GCLF as a standard candle by matching the turnover points in NGC 4874 and another Coma elliptical, IC 4051, with those of the giant ellipticals in the Virgo cluster (M87 and five others…
We present evidence for non-Gaussian velocity fields within the cores of luminous elliptical galaxies. This evidence is based upon high signal-to-noise, medium-resolution spectroscopy of the cores of early-type members of the Virgo and Coma clusters obtained with the WIYN 3.5-m telescope. The Virgo data were acquired using an integral-field unit (DensePak) allowing the velocity field to be sampled over a variety of spatial scales. The Coma data were obtained through single, 2-arcsec diameter fibers. The cross-correlation profiles of luminous ellipticals show considerable structure, often havin…
We present deep wide field (16'.4 x 16'.4) Washington CT1 CCD surface photometry of the giant elliptical galaxy NGC 4472, the brightest member in the Virgo cluster. Our data cover a wider field than any previous CCD photometry as well as going deeper. Surface brightness profiles of NGC 4472 are not well fit by a single King model, but they can be fit approximately by two King models: with separate models for the inner and outer regions. Surface brightness profiles for the outer region can also be fit approximately by a deVaucouleurs law. There is clearly a negative color gradient within 3' of …
Deep wide-field H$α$+[NII] imaging around the Virgo cluster giant elliptical galaxy M86 reveals a highly complex and disturbed ISM/ICM. The most striking feature is a set of H$α$ filaments which clearly connect M86 with the nearby disturbed spiral NGC 4438 (23$'$=120 kpc projected away), providing strong evidence for a previously unrecognized collision between them. Spectroscopy of selected regions show a fairly smooth velocity gradient between M86 and NGC 4438, consistent with the collision scenario. Such a collision would impart significant energy into the ISM of M86, probably heating the ga…
We analyze the star formation activity of an homogeneous LSB dwarf galaxy sample in the Virgo cluster, as a function of the radial velocity relative to the cluster mean velocity and the projected distance from the center of the cluster, using CCD images obtained at the Wise Observatory. The localized H$α$ emission in the HII regions of this sample is compared to that of an isolated gas-rich sample of LSB dwarf galaxies and that of a representative sample of Blue Compact Dwarf (BCD) galaxies in the cluster. We report preliminary results on the LSB dwarf star formation histories obtained from su…
We selected samples of late-type dwarf galaxies in the Virgo cluster with HI information. The galaxies were observed at the Wise-Observatory using several broad-band and H$α$ bandpasses. UV measurements were carried out with the IUE Observatory from VILSPA, and with the FAUST shuttle-borne UV telescope. We describe our observations in detail, paying particular attention to the determination of measurement errors, and present the observational results together with published data and far-infrared information from IRAS. The sample will be analyzed in subsequent papers, in order to study star for…
[annotated] HST WFPC2 images were taken of three LSB dwarf elliptical galaxies in the Virgo cluster. The intent of the observations was to determine the small scale structure in these enigmatic galaxies, and to attempt to learn something about the nature of their giant branch through the detection of luminosity fluctuations. In two of the three studied galaxies, V7L3 and V1L4, the luminosity fluctuations were unambiguously detected, yielding a density of 2 - 10 red giants/pixel. Using the observed B-V and V-I colors as a constraint, we could find no model that would reproduce the observed fluc…
Early-type dwarf galaxies dominate cluster populations, but their formation and evolutionary histories are poorly understood. The ALFALFA (Arecibo Legacy Fast ALFA) survey has completed observations of the Virgo Cluster in the declination range of 6 - 16 degrees. Less than 2% of the early-type dwarf population is detected, a significantly lower fraction than reported in previous papers based on more limited samples. In contrast ~30 of the irregular/BCD dwarf population is detected. The detected early-type galaxies tend to be located in the outer regions of the cluster, with a concentration in …
We use a 54.4 ks Chandra observation to study ram-pressure stripping in NGC4552 (M89), an elliptical galaxy in the Virgo Cluster. Chandra images in the 0.5-2 keV band show a sharp leading edge in the surface brightness 3.1 kpc north of the galaxy center, a cool (kT =0.51^{+0.09}_{-0.06} keV) tail with mean density n_e ~5.4 +/- 1.7 x 10^{-3} cm^{-3} extending ~10 kpc to the south of the galaxy, and two 3-4 kpc horns of emission extending southward away from the leading edge. These are all features characteristic of supersonic ram-pressure stripping of galaxy gas, due to NGC4552's motion through…
Narrow band photometry is presented on 27 dwarf ellipticals in the Fornax cluster. Calibrated with Galactic globular cluster data and spectrophotometric population models, the colors indicated that dwarf ellipticals have a mean [Fe/H] of -1.00+/-0.28 ranging from -1.6 to -0.4. The mean age of dwarf ellipticals, also determined photometrically, is estimated at 10+/-1 Gyrs compared to 13 Gyrs for bright Fornax ellipticals. Comparison of our metallicity color and Mg_2 indices demonstrates that the [Mg/Fe] ratio is lower in dwarf ellipticals than their more massive cousins, which is consistent wit…
Planetary nebulae can be useful dynamical probes of elliptical galaxy halos, but progress thus far has been hampered by the small data samples available for study. In order to obtain a large sample of planetary nebulae for dynamical analysis, we have re-observed the giant elliptical galaxy M87 in the center of the Virgo Cluster. Surprisingly, we find that the M87 sample is contaminated by a significant fraction of intracluster objects. Follow up observations of three blank fields in the cluster confirm that a significant fraction of Virgo's starlight is intracluster. We discuss the implication…
This article reviews the popular reasons for the belief that dwarf elliptical galaxies and (ordinary) elliptical galaxies are distinct and separate species. They include: light-profile shape (or similarly image concentration); the magnitude-central surface brightness diagram; the magnitude-effective surface brightness diagram (or similarly the magnitude-effective radius diagram); and the Fundamental Plane. It is shown how a continuous trend between luminosity and a) light-profile shape, and b) central surface brightness (until the onest of core formation at M_B ~ -20.5 mag, results in a unific…
We present a discovery of a giant stellar halo in NGC 6822, a dwarf irregular galaxy in the Local Group. This halo is mostly made of old red giants, showing striking features: 1) it is several times larger than the main body of the galaxy seen in the optical images, and 2) it is elongated in the direction almost perpendicular to the HI disk of NGC 6822. The structure of this stellar halo looks similar to the shape of dwarf elliptical galaxies, indicating that the halos of dwarf irregular galaxies share the same origin with those of the dwarf elliptical galaxies.
The Virgo and Fornax clusters of galaxies play central roles in determining the Hubble constant H_0. A powerful and direct way of establishing distances for elliptical galaxies is to use the luminosities of the brightest red-giant stars (the TRGB luminosity, at M_I = -4.2). Here we report the direct observation of the TRGB stars in a dwarf elliptical galaxy in the Virgo cluster. We find its distance to be 15.7 +- 1.5 Megaparsecs, from which we estimate a Hubble constant of H_0 = 77 +- 8 km/s/Mpc. Under the assumption of a low-density Universe with the simplest cosmology, the age of the Univers…
Using imaging from the Hubble Space Telescope, we derive surface brightness profiles for ultra-compact dwarfs in the Fornax cluster and for the nuclei of dwarf elliptical galaxies in the Virgo cluster. Ultra-compact dwarfs are more extended and have higher surface brightnesses than typical dwarf nuclei, while the luminosities, colors, and sizes of the nuclei are closer to those of Galactic globular clusters. This calls into question the production of ultra-compact dwarfs via ``threshing'' whereby the lower surface brightness envelope of a dwarf elliptical is removed by tidal processes, leaving…
Using single channel infrared photometry from the literature, a provisional K-band diameter--velocity dispersion relation for elliptical galaxies in the Coma and Virgo clusters is derived. The Coma cluster relation has \~1.5 times lower scatter at K than in B or V. Excluding 4 outliers, the RMS scatter at K for 24 galaxies in Coma is only 4.8% in distance, close to the limit implied by the observational errors. Distance estimates based on the IR \Dsig relation will be more accurate than those derived from optical data. The improvement in the infrared is attributed to a decrease in sensitivity …
Early-type dwarfs are the most common galaxy in the local universe, yet their origin and evolution remain a mystery. Various cosmological scenarios predict that dwarf-like galaxies in dense areas are the first to form and hence should be the oldest stellar systems in clusters. By using radial velocities of early-type dwarfs in the Virgo cluster we demonstrate that these galaxies are not an old cluster population but have signatures of production from the infall of field galaxies. Evidence of this includes the combined large dispersions and sub-structure in spatial and kinematic distributions f…
The impact of the cluster environment on the evolution of dwarf galaxies is investigated by comparing the properties of a sample of dwarf irregulars (dIs) in the Virgo Cluster with a control sample of nearby ("field") dIs having oxygen abundances derived from [O III]4363 measurements and measured distances from resolved stellar constituents. Spectroscopic data are obtained for H II regions in 11 Virgo dIs distributed in the central and outer regions of the cluster. To ensure that oxygen abundances are derived in a homogeneous manner, oxygen abundances for field and Virgo dIs are computed using…
We present a study of the smallest and faintest galaxies found in a very deep photographic R band survey of two regions of the Virgo Cluster, totalling 3.2 square degrees, made with the UK Schmidt Telescope. The objects we detect have the same physical sizes and surface brightnesses as Local Group dwarf spheroidal galaxies. The luminosity function of these extremely low luminosity galaxies (down to M_R =~ -11 or about 5 X 10^{-5} L*) is very steep, with a power law slope alpha = -2.2.
Keck/ESI spectroscopy is presented for six Virgo Cluster dwarf elliptical (dE) galaxies. The mean line-of-sight velocity and velocity dispersion are resolved as a function of radius along the major axis of each galaxy, nearly doubling the total number of dEs with spatially-resolved stellar kinematics. None of the observed objects shows evidence of strong rotation: upper limits on v_rot/sigma are well below those expected for rotationally-flattened objects. Such limits place strong constraints on dE galaxy formation models. Although these galaxies continue the trend of low rotation velocities o…
Using deep Chandra observations of M84 we study the energetics of the interaction between the black hole and the interstellar medium of this early-type galaxy. We perform a detailed two dimensional reconstruction of the properties of the X-ray emitting gas using a constrained Voronoi tessellation method, identifying the mean trends and carrying out the fluctuation analysis of the thermodynamical properties of the hot ISM. In addition to the PV work associated with the bubble expansion, we identify and measure the wave energy associated with the mildly supersonic bubble expansion. We show that,…
In order to investigate the nature of dwarf Low Surface Brightness (LSB) galaxies we have undertaken a deep B and I band CCD survey of a 14 sq degree strip in the Virgo Cluster and applied a Fourier convolution technique to explore its dwarf galaxy population down to a central surface brightness of 26 B mag/sq arcsec and a total absolute B mag of ~ -10. In this paper we carry out an analysis of their morphology, (B-I) colours and atomic hydrogen content. We compare these properties with those of dwarf galaxies in other environments to try and assess how the cluster environment has influenced t…
X-ray observations of M87 in the Virgo cluster and NGC 4874 in Coma reveal that the gas temperature beyond about 50 kpc from these cD galaxies is comparable to the virial temperature of the cluster, 3 or 9 keV respectively, but within the optical galaxy the temperature drops to the galactic virial temperature, about 1 keV. We show that these steep thermal (and density) gradients follow naturally from the usual cooling inflow assumptions without recourse to thermal conductivity. To avoid unobserved central mass concentrations, most of the gas must radiatively cool (``dropout'') before it flows …
We have run high resolution N-body models simulating the encounter of a dwarf galaxy with a bright elliptical galaxy. The dwarf absorbs orbital angular momentum and shows counter-rotating features in the external regions of the galaxy. To explain the core-envelope kinematic decoupling observed in some dwarf galaxies in high-density environments requires nearly head-on collisions and very little dark matter bound to the dwarf. These kinematic structures appear under rather restrictive conditions. As a consequence, in a cluster like Virgo ~1% of dwarf galaxies may present counter-rotation formed…
We present a study of the smallest and faintest galaxies found in a very deep photographic R band survey of regions of the Virgo Cluster, totalling over 3 square degrees, made with the UK Schmidt Telescope. The objects we detect have the same physical sizes and surface brightnesses as Local Group dwarf spheroidal galaxies. The luminosity function of these extremely low luminosity galaxies (down to M_R =~ -11 or about 5 X 10^{-5} L*) is very steep, with a power law slope alpha =~ -2, as would be expected in many theories of galaxy formation via hierarchical clustering, supporting previous obser…
We describe a new, deep photographic survey of the Virgo Cluster which uses multiple exposures on Tech Pan film with the United Kingdom Schmidt Telescope to probe the dwarf population to fainter surface brightness limits than previous surveys. We have identified galaxies having sizes (>= 3 arcsec scale length) and surface brightnesses (<= 24.5 R mag arcsec^-2) characteristic of those expected for dwarf spheroidal galaxies in the cluster. The survey is providing substantial samples of extremely low luminosity galaxies outside the environment of the Local Group and nearby groups for the first ti…
The shape of the surface brightness profile of dE galaxies, quantified by parameter n of Sersic's generalized profile law, has recently been put forward as new extragalactic distance indicator (Young & Currie 1994). Its application to the Virgo cluster has subsequently led to the claim that the Virgo dEs are not lying in the cluster core but are distributed in a prolate structure stretching from 8 to 20 Mpc distance (Young & Currie 1995). This claim is refuted here. We have fitted a Sersic law to the surface brightness profiles of 128 Virgo cluster dEs and dS0s from the photometry of Binggeli …
We have analysed the globular cluster (GC) system of the nucleated dwarf elliptical galaxy VCC 1087 in the Virgo cluster, based on Keck/LRIS spectroscopy and archival HST/ACS imaging. We estimate VCC 1087 hosts a total population of 77+/-19 GCs, which corresponds to a relatively high V-band specific frequency of 5.8+/-1.4. The g-z color distribution of the GCs shows a blue (metal-poor) peak with a tail of redder (metal-rich) clusters similar in color to those seen in luminous ellipticals. Spectroscopy of a subsample of 12 GCs suggests that the GC system is old and coeval (~10 Gyr), with a fair…
We present the results of optical spectroscopy of a newly discovered H II region residing in the H I gas cloud located between the dwarf irregular galaxy UGC 7636 and the giant elliptical galaxy NGC 4472 in the Virgo Cluster. By comparing UGC 7636 with dwarf irregular galaxies in the field, we show that the H I cloud must have originated from UGC 7636 because (1) the oxygen abundance of the cloud agrees with that expected for a galaxy with the blue luminosity of UGC 7636, and (2) M_{H I}/L_B for UGC 7636 becomes consistent with the measured oxygen abundance of the cloud if the H I mass of the …
Dwarf ellipticals have the lowest stellar densities of any galaxies, but paradoxically are most common in the densest regions of the universe, and are especially frequent in rich clusters of galaxies. Simple estimates suggest that low luminosity dwarf ellipticals should be subject to substantial tidal heating in rich clusters if most of their mass is in the form of normal stars. We have therefore undertaken a program to image dwarfs in clusters with the 3.5-m high performance WIYN, ARC and smaller, wide field telescopes. Our objectives include testing for evidence of tidal disruption in the fo…
The Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) on HST has been used to image two fields in the core of the Virgo cluster that contain a number of dwarf elliptical galaxies. The combined F555W and F814W images have resolved red giant stars in these galaxies, down to 1 mag below the giant branch tip. Two of the galaxies were targeted because of their extremely low central surface brightnesses (Bo > 27.0), thus the successful resolution into stars confirms the existence of such tenuous galaxies. Red giant stars were also found that are not ostensibly associated with any galaxy. Color-magnitude diagrams in…
We report discovery of young embedded structures in three diffuse elliptical galaxies (dE) in the Virgo cluster: IC 783, IC 3468, and IC 3509. We performed 3D spectroscopic observations of these galaxies using the MPFS spectrograph at the Russian 6-m telescope, and obtained spatially resolved distributions of kinematical and stellar population parameters by fitting high-resolution PEGASE.HR synthetic single stellar populations (SSP) in the pixel space. In all three galaxies, the luminosity weighted age of the nuclei, about 4 Gyr, is considerably younger than population in the outer regions of …
In this Paper we investigate the kinematical properties of early-type dwarfs by significantly enlarging the scarce observational sample so far available. We present rotation curves and mean velocity dispersions for four bright dwarf ellipticals and two dwarf lenticular galaxies in the Virgo cluster. Most of these galaxies exhibit conspicuous rotation curves. In particular, five out of the six new galaxies are found to be close to the predictions for oblate spheroids flattened by rotation. Therefore, and contrary to the previous observational hints, the present data suggest that an important fr…
We present new imaging and spectroscopic observations of six ultra-compact dwarf (UCD) galaxies in the Virgo Cluster, along with re-analysed data for five Fornax Cluster UCDs. These are the most luminous UCDs: -14<Mv<-12 mag. Our HST imaging shows that most of the UCDs have shallow or steep cusps in their cores; only one UCD has a flat ``King'' core. None of the UCDs show tidal cutoffs down to our limiting surface brightness. Spectroscopic analysis shows that Virgo UCDs are older than 8 Gyr and have metallicities in the range [Z/H]=-1.35...+0.35 dex. Five Virgo UCDs have super-solar alpha/Fe a…
We present kinematics and stellar population properties of 17 dwarf early-type galaxies in the luminosity range -14> M_B> -19. Our sample fills the gap between the intensively studied giant elliptical and Local Group dwarf spheroidal galaxies. The dwarf ellipticals of the present sample have constant velocity dispersion profiles within their effective radii and do not show significant rotation, hence are clearly anisotropic. The dwarf lenticulars, instead, rotate faster and are, at least partially, supported by rotation. From optical Lick absorption indices, we derive metallicities and element…
The present work is aimed at studying the distribution of galaxies of different types and luminosities along different structural scaling relations to see whether massive and dwarf ellipticals have been shaped by the same formation process. This exercise is here done by comparing the distribution of Virgo cluster massive and dwarf ellipticals and star forming galaxies along the B band effective surface brightness and effective radius vs. absolute magnitude relations and the Kormendy relation to the predictions of models tracing the effects of ram-pressure stripping on disc galaxies entering th…
We have analyzed archival HST/ACS images in Sloan g and z of the globular cluster (GC) systems of 53 ellipticals in the Virgo Cluster, spanning massive galaxies to dEs. Among the new results are: (1) In the gEs M87 and NGC 4649, there is a correlation between luminosity and color for individual metal-poor GCs, such that more massive GCs are more metal-rich. A plausible interpretation of this result is self-enrichment, and may suggest that these GCs once possessed dark matter halos. (2) Many dEs have metal-rich GC subpopulations. We also confirm the GC color--galaxy luminosity relations found p…
A new installment of neutral hydrogen mappings of Blue Compact Dwarf galaxies, as defined by optical morphology, in and near the Virgo cluster is presented. The primary motivation was to search for outlying clouds of HI as potential interactive triggers of the enhanced star formation, and therefore the mapped galaxies were selected for large HI} mass, large optical diameter, and large velocity profile width. Approximately half the sample proved to have one or more small, low column density star-free companion clouds, either detached or appearing as an appendage in our maps, at resolution of or…
Recent observations demonstrate that dwarf elliptical (dE) galaxies in clusters, despite their faintness, are likely a critical galaxy type for understanding the processes behind galaxy formation. Dwarf ellipticals are the most common galaxy type, and are particularly abundant in rich galaxy clusters. The dwarf to giant ratio is in fact highest in rich clusters of galaxies, suggesting that cluster dEs do not form in groups that later merge to form clusters. Dwarf ellipticals are potentially the only galaxy type whose formation is sensitive to global, rather than local, environment. The dominan…
We present a photometric study of the globular clusters in the giant elliptical galaxy M60 in the Virgo cluster, based on deep, relatively wide field Washington CT_1 CCD images. The color-magnitude diagram reveals a significant population of globular clusters in M60, and a large number of young luminous clusters in NGC 4647, a small companion spiral galaxy north-west of M60. The color distribution of the globular clusters in M60 is clearly bimodal, with a blue peak at (C-T_1)=1.37, and a red peak at (C-T_1)=1.87. We derive two new transformation relations between the (C-T_1)_0 color and [Fe/H]…
We have carried out surface photometry and an isophotal analysis for a sample of 25 early-type dwarf (dE and dS0) galaxies in the Virgo cluster based on CCD images taken at the VLT with FORS1 and FORS2. For each galaxy we present $B$ and $R$-band surface brightness profiles, as well as the radial colour ($B-R$) profile. We give total apparent $BR$ magnitudes, effective radii, effective surface brightnesses and total colour indices. The light profiles have been fitted with Sérsic models and the corresponding parameters are compared to the ones for other classes of objects. The observed profiles…
