Using deep Chandra observations of M84 we study the energetics of the interaction between the black hole and the interstellar medium of this early-type galaxy. We perform a detailed two dimensional reconstruction of the properties of the X-ray emitting gas using a constrained Voronoi tessellation method, identifying the mean trends and carrying out the fluctuation analysis of the thermodynamical properties of the hot ISM. In addition to the PV work associated with the bubble expansion, we identify and measure the wave energy associated with the mildly supersonic bubble expansion. We show that, depending on the age of the cavity and the associated wave, the waves can have a substantial contribution to the total energy release from the AGN. The energy dissipated in the waves tends to be concentrated near the center of M84 and in the direction perpendicular to the bubble outflow, possibly due to the interference of the waves generated by the expansion of northern and southern bubbles. We also find direct evidence for the escape of radio plasma from the ISM of the host galaxy into the intergalactic medium.
Keck spectroscopy is presented for four dwarf elliptical galaxies in the Virgo Cluster. At this distance, the mean velocity and velocity dispersion are well resolved as a function of radius between 100 to 1000 pc, allowing a clear separation between nuclear and surrounding galaxy light. We find a variety of dispersion profiles for the inner regions of these objects, and show that none of these galaxies is rotationally flattened.
This Letter presents the color distributions of the globular cluster (GC) systems of 12 Virgo elliptical galaxies, measured using data from the Hubble Space Telescope. Bright galaxies with large numbers of detected GC's show two distinct cluster populations with mean V-I colors near 1.01 and 1.26. The GC population of M86 is a clear exception; its color distribution shows a single sharp peak near V-I=1.03. The absence of the red population in this galaxy, and the consistency of the peak colors in the others, may be indications of the origins of the two populations found in most bright elliptic…
We present UBVRI surface photometry for 16 dwarf elliptical galaxies in the Virgo Cluster with previously measured kinematic properties. The global optical colors are red, with median values for the sample of 0.24 +/- 0.03 in (U-B), 0.77 +/- 0.02 in (B-V), and 1.02 +/- 0.03 in (V-I). We recover the well known color-magnitude relation for cluster galaxies, but find no significant difference in dominant stellar population between rotating and non-rotating dwarf elliptical galaxies; the average age of the dominant stellar population is 5-7 Gyr in all 16 galaxies in this sample. Analysis of optica…
Using accurate distances to individual Virgo cluster galaxies obtained by the method of Surface Brightness Fluctuations, we show that Virgo's brightest ellipticals have a remarkably collinear arrangement in three dimensions. This axis, which is inclined by 10 to 15 degrees from the line of sight, can be traced to even larger scales where it appears to join a filamentary bridge of galaxies connecting Virgo to the rich cluster Abell 1367. The orientations of individual Virgo ellipticals also show some tendency to be aligned with the cluster axis, as does the jet of the supergiant elliptical M87.…
We have determined spectroscopic ages of elliptical galaxies in the Virgo cluster using spectra of very high signal-to-noise ratio (S/N/A > 100). We observed 8 galaxies with the Subaru Telescope and have combined this sample with 6 galaxies previously observed with the WHT. To determine their ages we have used a new method based on the Hgamma_sigma age indicator, which is virtually independent of the effects of metallicity. Apart from ages we have estimated abundances of various elements. In this paper we present the observations, the data reduction and the reliability of the Hgamma_sigma meth…
We analyzed a deep Chandra observation of M84, a bright elliptical galaxy in the core of the Virgo cluster. We find that the spatial distribution of the soft X-ray emission is defined by the radio structure of the galaxy. In particular we find two low density regions associated with the radio lobes and surrounded by higher density X-ray filaments. In addition to a central AGN and a population of galactic sources, we find a diffuse hard source filling the central 10 kpc region. Since the morphology of the hard source appears round and is different from that seen in the radio or in soft X-rays, …
NGC 4649 (M60) is one of a handful of giant Virgo ellipticals. We have obtained Gemini/GMOS spectra for 38 GCs associated with this galaxy. Applying the multi-index chi^2 minimisation technique of Proctor & Sansom (2002) with the single stellar population models of Thomas, Maraston & Korn (2004) we derive ages, metallicities and alpha-element abundance ratios. We find several young (2--3 Gyr old) super-solar metallicity GCs, while the majority are old (>10 Gyrs), spanning a range of metallicities from solar to [Z/H]=-2. At least two of these young GCs are at large projected radii of 17-20 kpc.…
The structural properties of a sample of 50 dEs in the Virgo cluster are here derived from Near InfraRed (NIR, H-band 1.65 micron) surface photometry and analysed. One-dimensional surface brightness (SB) profiles are extracted using elliptical isophote fitting. They are characterised by means of structural parameters, namely the half light radius R_e, the average surface brightness within R_e (mu_e), and a concentration index (c_31). We show that typical dEs have close-to-exponential NIR SB distributions. The relations between dEs and giant ellipticals (Es) are investigated by comparing the NI…
We present high-resolution ($1\farcs8$ -- $4\farcs5$) CO data of the Virgo spiral galaxy NGC 4569, obtained using the Nobeyama Millimeter Array. We found that the molecular gas is highly concentrated in the circumnuclear region with two off-center peaks. A CO image with the highest angular resolution of $2\farcs0 \times 1\farcs8$ shows that six blobs likely form a circumnuclear elliptical ring (CER) with a semi-major axis radius of 720 pc. The CER shows a strongly twisted velocity field, and the position--velocity (PV) diagram shows significant forbidden velocity components. These kinetic feat…
New observations of 16 dwarf elliptical galaxies in the Virgo Cluster indicate that at least seven dEs have significant velocity gradients along their optical major axis, with typical rotation amplitudes of 20-30 km/s. Of the remaining nine galaxies in this sample, 6 have velocity gradients less than 20 km/s kpc^{-1} while the other 3 observations had too low of a signal--to--noise ratio to determine an accurate velocity gradient. Typical velocity dispersions for these galaxies are ~44 +/- 5 km/s, indicating that rotation can be a significant component of the stellar dynamics of Virgo dEs. Whe…
I review constraints on the radial density profiles and ellipticities of the dark matter obtained from recent X-ray observations with Chandra and XMM of elliptical galaxies and galaxy clusters and discuss their implications, especially for the self-interacting dark matter model.
We study the evolution of dwarf (L_H < 10^{9.6} L_Ho) star forming and quiescent galaxies in the Virgo cluster by comparing their UV to radio centimetric properties to the predictions of multizone chemo-spectrophotometric models of galaxy evolution especially tuned to take into account the perturbations induced by the interaction with the cluster intergalactic medium. Our models simulate one or multiple ram pressure stripping events and galaxy starvation. Models predict that all star forming dwarf galaxies entering the cluster for the first time loose most, if not all, of their atomic gas cont…
We use a 54.4 ks Chandra observation to study nuclear outflow activity in NGC4552 (M89), an elliptical galaxy in the Virgo Cluster. Chandra images in the 0.5-2 keV band show two ring-like features ~1.7 kpc in diameter in the core of NGC4552, as reported previously by Filho et al. We use spherically symmetric point explosion shock models to argue that the shape of the surface brightness profile across the rims of the rings and the temperature of hot gas in the rings are consistent with a Mach 1.7 shock carrying mean mechanical power L_shock ~ 3 x 10^{41} ergs/s produced by a ~1.4 x 10^{55} ergs…
We present in this paper the deepest Arecibo HI observations of Virgo cluster dwarf ellipticals (dEs) taken to date. Based on this data we argue that a significant fraction of Virgo cluster dEs recently underwent evolution. Our new observations consist of HI 21-cm line observations for 22 classified dE galaxies with optical radial velocities consistent with membership in the Virgo cluster. Cluster members VCC 390 and VCC 1713 are detected with HI masses M(HI) = 6*10^7 M_solar and 8*10^7 M_solar, respectively, while M(HI) in the remaining 20 dE galaxies have upper limits as low as 5*10^5 M_sola…
Elliptical galaxy nuclei are the sites of the largest black holes known, but typically show little or no nuclear activity. We investigate this extreme quiescence using Chandra X-ray Observatory observations of the giant elliptical galaxies NGC 1399, NGC 4472, and NGC 4636. The unique Chandra imaging power enables us to place upper limits of 7.3, 15 and 28 X 10^-9 the Eddington luminosity for the 0.1-1 billion solar mass black holes in NGC 1399, NGC 4472, and NGC 4636, respectively. The corresponding radiative efficiencies in this band are 4.1, 24, and 620 X 10^-6 using Bondi accretion rates de…
We present a deep VLA search for HI emission from the low-luminosity Virgo Cluster elliptical galaxy NGC 4476, which contains 1.1 x 10^8 M_sun of molecular gas in an undisturbed disk in regular rotation. No HI was detected. The rms noise in the final image corresponds to a 3 sigma column density sensitivity of 1.2 x 10^20 cm^{-2} at the position of NGC 4476, averaged over the 4 kpc beam. The total HI mass is less than 1.5 x 10^7 M_sun. If we compare our HI upper limit to the H_2 content, we find that NGC 4476 is extremely deficient in HI compared to other galaxies detected in these two species…
We have employed FORS1/2+VLT to acquire deep B and R CCD images of 16 dwarf elliptical galaxies in the direction of the Virgo cluster. For each dwarf we measure the R-band surface brightness fluctuation (SBF) magnitude \bar{m}_R and the (B-R) colour in a number of fields at different galactocentric distances. From the field-to-field variation of the two quantities we determine the SBF distance by means of the (B-R)-\bar{M}_R relation. The derived distances of the dwarfs are ranging from 14.9-21.3Mpc, with a mean 1sigma uncertainty of 1.4Mpc, confirming that there is considerable depth in the d…
We report on a complete CCD imaging survey of 226 elliptical galaxies in the North-East quadrant of the Virgo cluster, representative of the properties of giant and dwarf elliptical galaxies in this cluster. We fit their radial light profiles with the Sersic r^(1/n) model of light distribution. We confirm the result of Graham & Guzman (2003) that the apparent dichotomy between E and dE galaxies in the luminosity-<mu>_e plane no longer appears when other structural parameters are considered and can be entirely attributed to the onset of "core" galaxies at B_T sim -20.5 mag. When "core" galaxies…
We present the results of a Keck spectroscopic study of globular clusters associated with the Virgo Cluster dwarf elliptical VCC 1386. We analyze blue spectroscopic absorption lines from 3500-5500 A for 13 globular cluster candidates and confirm that five are associated with VCC 1386. By comparing metal and Balmer line indices of these globular clusters with alpha-enhanced single stellar population models we find that these systems are metal poor with [Fe/H] < -1.35 and old, with ages > 5 Gyr at 3 sigma confidence, placing their formation at z >1. This is one of the first spectroscopic studies…
We have used deep HST/WFPC2 images in V (F606W) and I (F814W) to measure the luminosity distribution of the globular clusters in NGC 4874, the central cD galaxy of the Coma cluster. We find the ``turnover'' point of the globular cluster luminosity function (GCLF) to lie at V = 27.88 +/- 0.12, while the overall GCLF shape matches the standard Gaussian-like form with dispersion SIGMA_V = 1.49 +/- 0.12. We use the GCLF as a standard candle by matching the turnover points in NGC 4874 and another Coma elliptical, IC 4051, with those of the giant ellipticals in the Virgo cluster (M87 and five others…
We present evidence for non-Gaussian velocity fields within the cores of luminous elliptical galaxies. This evidence is based upon high signal-to-noise, medium-resolution spectroscopy of the cores of early-type members of the Virgo and Coma clusters obtained with the WIYN 3.5-m telescope. The Virgo data were acquired using an integral-field unit (DensePak) allowing the velocity field to be sampled over a variety of spatial scales. The Coma data were obtained through single, 2-arcsec diameter fibers. The cross-correlation profiles of luminous ellipticals show considerable structure, often havin…
We present deep wide field (16'.4 x 16'.4) Washington CT1 CCD surface photometry of the giant elliptical galaxy NGC 4472, the brightest member in the Virgo cluster. Our data cover a wider field than any previous CCD photometry as well as going deeper. Surface brightness profiles of NGC 4472 are not well fit by a single King model, but they can be fit approximately by two King models: with separate models for the inner and outer regions. Surface brightness profiles for the outer region can also be fit approximately by a deVaucouleurs law. There is clearly a negative color gradient within 3' of …
We use a 54.4 ks Chandra observation to study ram-pressure stripping in NGC4552 (M89), an elliptical galaxy in the Virgo Cluster. Chandra images in the 0.5-2 keV band show a sharp leading edge in the surface brightness 3.1 kpc north of the galaxy center, a cool (kT =0.51^{+0.09}_{-0.06} keV) tail with mean density n_e ~5.4 +/- 1.7 x 10^{-3} cm^{-3} extending ~10 kpc to the south of the galaxy, and two 3-4 kpc horns of emission extending southward away from the leading edge. These are all features characteristic of supersonic ram-pressure stripping of galaxy gas, due to NGC4552's motion through…
Deep wide-field H$α$+[NII] imaging around the Virgo cluster giant elliptical galaxy M86 reveals a highly complex and disturbed ISM/ICM. The most striking feature is a set of H$α$ filaments which clearly connect M86 with the nearby disturbed spiral NGC 4438 (23$'$=120 kpc projected away), providing strong evidence for a previously unrecognized collision between them. Spectroscopy of selected regions show a fairly smooth velocity gradient between M86 and NGC 4438, consistent with the collision scenario. Such a collision would impart significant energy into the ISM of M86, probably heating the ga…
Chandra images show symmetric, 8 kpc long, arm-like features in the X-ray halo surrounding NGC 4636. The leading edges of these features are sharp and are accompanied by temperature increases of ~30%. These properties, along with their scale and symmetry, suggest that the arm-like structures are produced by nuclear outburst driven shocks. We interpret these observations as part of a cycle in which cooling gas originally fueled a nuclear outburst about 3 X 10^{6} years ago leading to shocks that reheat the cooling gas, thus preventing the accumulation of significant amounts of cooled gas in the…
[annotated] HST WFPC2 images were taken of three LSB dwarf elliptical galaxies in the Virgo cluster. The intent of the observations was to determine the small scale structure in these enigmatic galaxies, and to attempt to learn something about the nature of their giant branch through the detection of luminosity fluctuations. In two of the three studied galaxies, V7L3 and V1L4, the luminosity fluctuations were unambiguously detected, yielding a density of 2 - 10 red giants/pixel. Using the observed B-V and V-I colors as a constraint, we could find no model that would reproduce the observed fluc…
Planetary nebulae can be useful dynamical probes of elliptical galaxy halos, but progress thus far has been hampered by the small data samples available for study. In order to obtain a large sample of planetary nebulae for dynamical analysis, we have re-observed the giant elliptical galaxy M87 in the center of the Virgo Cluster. Surprisingly, we find that the M87 sample is contaminated by a significant fraction of intracluster objects. Follow up observations of three blank fields in the cluster confirm that a significant fraction of Virgo's starlight is intracluster. We discuss the implication…
We present analysis of a Chandra observation of the elliptical galaxy NGC 4555. The galaxy lies in a very low density environment, either isolated from all galaxies of similar mass or on the outskirts of a group. Despite this, NGC 4555 has a large gaseous halo, extending to ~60 kpc. We find the mean gas temperature to be ~0.95 keV and the Iron abundance to be ~0.5 solar. We model the surface brightness, temperature and abundance distribution of the halo and use these results to estimate parameters such as the entropy and cooling time of the gas, and the total gravitational mass of the galaxy. …
The Virgo and Fornax clusters of galaxies play central roles in determining the Hubble constant H_0. A powerful and direct way of establishing distances for elliptical galaxies is to use the luminosities of the brightest red-giant stars (the TRGB luminosity, at M_I = -4.2). Here we report the direct observation of the TRGB stars in a dwarf elliptical galaxy in the Virgo cluster. We find its distance to be 15.7 +- 1.5 Megaparsecs, from which we estimate a Hubble constant of H_0 = 77 +- 8 km/s/Mpc. Under the assumption of a low-density Universe with the simplest cosmology, the age of the Univers…
Using single channel infrared photometry from the literature, a provisional K-band diameter--velocity dispersion relation for elliptical galaxies in the Coma and Virgo clusters is derived. The Coma cluster relation has \~1.5 times lower scatter at K than in B or V. Excluding 4 outliers, the RMS scatter at K for 24 galaxies in Coma is only 4.8% in distance, close to the limit implied by the observational errors. Distance estimates based on the IR \Dsig relation will be more accurate than those derived from optical data. The improvement in the infrared is attributed to a decrease in sensitivity …
We determine the total enclosed mass profile from 0.7 to 35 kpc in the elliptical galaxy NGC 4636 based on the hot interstellar medium temperature profile measured using the Chandra X-ray Observatory, and other X-ray and optical data. The total mass increases as radius to the power 1.2 to a good approximation over this range in radii, attaining a total mass-to-light ratio of 40 solar masses per solar visual luminosity at 35 kpc. We find that at least half, and as much as 80%, of the mass within the optical half-light radius is non-luminous, implying an exceptionally low baryon fraction in NGC …
Keck/ESI spectroscopy is presented for six Virgo Cluster dwarf elliptical (dE) galaxies. The mean line-of-sight velocity and velocity dispersion are resolved as a function of radius along the major axis of each galaxy, nearly doubling the total number of dEs with spatially-resolved stellar kinematics. None of the observed objects shows evidence of strong rotation: upper limits on v_rot/sigma are well below those expected for rotationally-flattened objects. Such limits place strong constraints on dE galaxy formation models. Although these galaxies continue the trend of low rotation velocities o…
X-ray observations of M87 in the Virgo cluster and NGC 4874 in Coma reveal that the gas temperature beyond about 50 kpc from these cD galaxies is comparable to the virial temperature of the cluster, 3 or 9 keV respectively, but within the optical galaxy the temperature drops to the galactic virial temperature, about 1 keV. We show that these steep thermal (and density) gradients follow naturally from the usual cooling inflow assumptions without recourse to thermal conductivity. To avoid unobserved central mass concentrations, most of the gas must radiatively cool (``dropout'') before it flows …
The shape of the surface brightness profile of dE galaxies, quantified by parameter n of Sersic's generalized profile law, has recently been put forward as new extragalactic distance indicator (Young & Currie 1994). Its application to the Virgo cluster has subsequently led to the claim that the Virgo dEs are not lying in the cluster core but are distributed in a prolate structure stretching from 8 to 20 Mpc distance (Young & Currie 1995). This claim is refuted here. We have fitted a Sersic law to the surface brightness profiles of 128 Virgo cluster dEs and dS0s from the photometry of Binggeli …
We have analysed the globular cluster (GC) system of the nucleated dwarf elliptical galaxy VCC 1087 in the Virgo cluster, based on Keck/LRIS spectroscopy and archival HST/ACS imaging. We estimate VCC 1087 hosts a total population of 77+/-19 GCs, which corresponds to a relatively high V-band specific frequency of 5.8+/-1.4. The g-z color distribution of the GCs shows a blue (metal-poor) peak with a tail of redder (metal-rich) clusters similar in color to those seen in luminous ellipticals. Spectroscopy of a subsample of 12 GCs suggests that the GC system is old and coeval (~10 Gyr), with a fair…
We report discovery of young embedded structures in three diffuse elliptical galaxies (dE) in the Virgo cluster: IC 783, IC 3468, and IC 3509. We performed 3D spectroscopic observations of these galaxies using the MPFS spectrograph at the Russian 6-m telescope, and obtained spatially resolved distributions of kinematical and stellar population parameters by fitting high-resolution PEGASE.HR synthetic single stellar populations (SSP) in the pixel space. In all three galaxies, the luminosity weighted age of the nuclei, about 4 Gyr, is considerably younger than population in the outer regions of …
We determine the total enclosed mass profile from 0.7 to 35 kpc in the elliptical galaxy NGC 4636 based on the hot interstellar medium temperature profile measured using the Chandra X-ray Observatory, and other X-ray and optical data. The total mass increases as radius to the power 1.2 to a good approximation over this range in radii, attaining a total of 1.5 trillion solar masses (corresponding to a mass-to-light ratio of 40 solar masses per solar visual luminosity) at 35 kpc. We find that at least half, and as much as 80%, of the mass within the optical half-light radius is non-luminous, imp…
We have analyzed archival HST/ACS images in Sloan g and z of the globular cluster (GC) systems of 53 ellipticals in the Virgo Cluster, spanning massive galaxies to dEs. Among the new results are: (1) In the gEs M87 and NGC 4649, there is a correlation between luminosity and color for individual metal-poor GCs, such that more massive GCs are more metal-rich. A plausible interpretation of this result is self-enrichment, and may suggest that these GCs once possessed dark matter halos. (2) Many dEs have metal-rich GC subpopulations. We also confirm the GC color--galaxy luminosity relations found p…
We present a photometric study of the globular clusters in the giant elliptical galaxy M60 in the Virgo cluster, based on deep, relatively wide field Washington CT_1 CCD images. The color-magnitude diagram reveals a significant population of globular clusters in M60, and a large number of young luminous clusters in NGC 4647, a small companion spiral galaxy north-west of M60. The color distribution of the globular clusters in M60 is clearly bimodal, with a blue peak at (C-T_1)=1.37, and a red peak at (C-T_1)=1.87. We derive two new transformation relations between the (C-T_1)_0 color and [Fe/H]…
We present characteristics of the X-ray point source population in the M84 galaxy, observed by Chandra ACIS-S. We find an excess in the number of sources centered on M84, with a spatial distribution closely corresponding to the M84 stellar light. Given an absence of recent star-formation, accreting binaries are the only candidates for the M84 X-ray sources. The majority of M84 sources (with luminosities exceeding 10^38 ergs/s) exhibit hardness ratios expected from multi-temperature black-body disk emission. The most luminous sources, which we attribute to accreting black holes exhibit X-ray co…
We study the UV properties of a volume limited sample of early-type galaxies in the Virgo cluster combining new GALEX far- (1530 A) and near-ultraviolet (2310 A) data with spectro-photometric data available at other wavelengths. The sample includes 264 ellipticals, lenticulars and dwarfs spanning a large range in luminosity (M(B)<-15). While the NUV to optical or near-IR color magnitude relations (CMR) are similar to those observed at optical wavelengths, with a monotonic reddening of the color index with increasing luminosity, the (FUV-V) and (FUV-H) CMRs show a discontinuity between massive …
The relatively nearby (distance=24.1 Mpc) elliptical galaxy NGC821 hosts an extreme example of a quiescent central massive black hole, for which deep Chandra observations revealed a nuclear source for the first time (with L(2-10 keV)/L_Edd ~ 3.6X10^{-8}). We present here a multiwavelength study of this nucleus, including VLA observations that detect a radio counterpart to the Chandra nuclear source at 1.4 GHz, with a flux density of 127 $μ$m and possibly a flat spectral shape; we also consider new Spitzer IRAC observations and archival HST images. With these data we discuss possible scenarios …
We present results from a mosaic of nine Chandra observations of M86 and the surrounding field. We detect three main diffuse components: the Virgo ICM at ~2.4 keV, the extended halo of M86 at ~1.2 keV, and the cooler central and stripped gas of M86 at ~0.8 keV. The most striking feature is a long tail of emission, which consists of a plume ~ 4' north of M86 and two main extensions emanating from the plume. Based on the morphology and temperature structure of the tail, we conclude that it is formed by ram pressure stripping of M86 as it falls into the Virgo cluster and interacts with the Virgo …
The giant elliptical galaxy M86 in Virgo has a ~28 kpc long dust trail inside its optical halo that points toward the nucleated dwarf elliptical galaxy, VCC 882. The trail seems to be stripped material from the dwarf. Extinction measurements suggest that the ratio of the total gas mass in the trail to the blue luminosity of the dwarf is about unity, which is comparable to such ratios in dwarf irregular galaxies. The ram pressure experienced by the dwarf galaxy in the hot gaseous halo of M86 was comparable to the internal gravitational binding energy density of the presumed former gas disk in V…
(Abridged) We present an analysis of a Chandra ACIS-S observation of the elliptical galaxy NGC 720 to verify the existence of a dark matter (DM) halo and to measure its ellipticity. The ACIS-S3 image reveals over 60 point sources. For semi-major axes a<~150" (18.2h_{70}^{-1} kpc) the ellipticity of the diffuse emission is ex ~0.15, which is less than the values 0.2-0.3 obtained from ROSAT because the point sources contaminated the ROSAT values. The Chandra data confirm the ~20 deg position angle (PA) twist discovered by ROSAT, but the Chandra twist is more gradual also because of the point sou…
I review the status of knowledge about the dwarf galaxies in the Virgo Cluster (VC) concentrating on work published after 1995. I explain the present ideas about the nature and history of the dwarf elliptical galaxies and emphasize the major increments in understanding achieved in the study of the dwarf irregular population. Special attention is given to the samples of late-type dwarf galaxies in the VC studied at the Wise Observatory(BCDs and dIs), and to a comparison of their properties.
We investigated the dynamical structure of 53 elliptical galaxies, based on the {\it Chandra} archival X-ray data. In X-ray luminous galaxies, a temperature increases with radius and a gas density is systematically higher at the optical outskirts, indicating a presence of a significant amount of the group-scale hot gas. In contrast, X-ray dim galaxies show a flat or declining temperature profile against radius and the gas density is relatively lower at the optical outskirts. Thus it is found that X-ray bright and faint elliptical galaxies are clearly distinguished by the temperature and gas de…
We report sub-arcsecond X-ray imaging spectroscopy of M87 and the core of the Virgo cluster with the Chandra X-ray Observatory. The X-ray morphology shows structure on arcsecond (~100 pc) to ten arcminute (~50 kpc) scales, the most prominent feature being an "arc" running from the east, across the central region of M87 and off to the southwest. A ridge in the radio map, ending in an "ear"-shaped structure, follows the arc to the east. Depressions in the X-ray surface brightness correspond to the inner radio lobes and there is no evidence of shock-heated gas surrounding them. There are also at …
With a Chandra ACIS-S3 observation, we detect 42 X-ray point sources in the elliptical galaxy NGC 720, including a possible central source. Most of these sources will be low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs), and 12 are located within 2" of globular cluster candidates. We investigate both the hardness ratios and combined spectra of the sources. They exhibit a distribution of X-ray colors similar to those seen in other early-type galaxies. We find that there is a population of highly absorbed sources located at large distances from the center of the galaxy. The overall spatial distribution of sources…
We present an X-ray analysis of 54 normal elliptical galaxies in the Chandra archive and isolate their hot gas component from the contaminating point source emission, allowing us to conduct, for the first time, a morphological analysis on the gas alone. A comparison with optical images and photometry shows that the hot gas morphology has surprisingly little in common with the shape of the stellar distribution. We observe no correlation between optical and X-ray ellipticities in the inner regions where stellar mass dominates over dark matter. A shallow correlation would be expected if the gas h…
We present a Chandra X-ray observation of the X-ray bright E2 elliptical galaxy NGC4649. In addition to bright diffuse emission, we resolve 165 discrete sources, most of which are presumably low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs). As found in previous studies, the luminosity function of the resolved sources is well-fit by a broken power-law. In NGC4697 and NGC1553, the break luminosity was comparable to the Eddington luminosity of a $1.4 M_{\odot}$ neutron star. One possible interpretation of this result is that those sources with luminosities above the break are accreting black holes and those below…
The publicly available EIS-DEEP optical-NIR data for the AXAF (Chandra) Deep Field have been used to construct samples of Extremely Red Objects (EROs) using various single-band and multi-band color criteria. In this work we define as EROs objects with colors consistent with passively evolving elliptical galaxies at z $\geq$ 1. The EROs surface densities we derive are intermediate between previous published values, emphasizing again the need for larger survey areas to constrain the effects of possible large-scale structure. Although various single-color selected samples can be derived, the EROs…
Chandra observations of the X-ray faint elliptical galaxy NGC 4697 resolve much of the X-ray emission (61% within one effective radius) into ~80 point sources, of which most are low mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs). These LMXBs provide the bulk of the hard emission and much of the soft emission as well. Of the remaining unresolved emission, it is likely that about half is from fainter LMXBs, while the other half (~23% of the total emission) is from interstellar gas. Three of the resolved sources are supersoft sources. In the outer regions of NGC 4697, eight of the LMXBs (about 25%) are coincident w…
Chandra observation of the central region of the A1060 cluster of galaxies resolved X-ray emission from two giant elliptical galaxies, NGC 3311 and NGC 3309. The emission from these galaxies consists of two components, namely the hot interstellar medium (ISM) and the low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs). We found the spatial extent of the ISM component was much smaller than that of stars for both galaxies, while the ratios of X-ray to optical blue-band luminosities were rather low but within the general scatter for elliptical galaxies. After subtracting the LMXB component, the ISM is shown to be in…
(abridged) A Chandra ACIS S3 observation of the X-ray faint elliptical galaxy NGC 4697 resolves much of the X-ray emission (61% of the counts from within one effective radius) into 90 point sources, of which ~80 are low mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) associated with this galaxy. The dominance of LMXBs indicates that X-ray faint early-type galaxies have lost much of their interstellar gas. On the other hand, a modest portion of the X-ray emission from NGC 4697 is due to hot gas. The X-ray emitting gas in NGC 4697 has a rather low temperature (kT = 0.29 keV). The emission from the gas is very exten…
Analysis of recent Chandra observations of the elliptical galaxies NGC 4472 and NGC 4649 has revealed faint soft X-ray sources at their centers. The sources are located to within 1'' of the optical centers of the galaxies. They are most likely associated with the central supermassive black holes. Interest in these and several other similar objects stems from the unusually low luminosity of the supermassive black holes embedded in dense interstellar medium. Our Chandra sources have very soft spectra. They are detectable only below ~0.6 keV and have luminosities in the 0.2-2.5 keV energy band of…
We present far-IR ISO observations of three early-type galaxies in the Virgo cluster. The data were recorded using the ISOPHOT instrument in both the P32 oversampled maps and the P39/37 sparse maps. The maps reach the limiting sensitivity of the ISOPHOT instrument at 60, 90, and 180$μ$m. Two of the most prominent elliptical galaxies in Virgo -- NGC 4472 and NGC 4649 -- clearly show no emission at far-IR wavelengths at a level of few tens of mJy, but NGC 4636 is detected at all three wavelengths. We have computed the far-IR emission from dust for NGC4472 and NGC4636 under the assumption that du…
The position of the giant elliptical galaxy M87 at the center of the Virgo Cluster means that the inferred column density of dark matter associated with both the cluster halo and the galaxy halo is quite large. This system is thus an important laboratory for studying massive dark objects in elliptical galaxies and galaxy clusters by gravitational microlensing, strongly complementing the studies of spiral galaxy halos performed in the Local Group. We have performed a microlensing survey of M87 with the WFPC2 instrument on the Hubble Space Telescope. Over a period of thirty days, with images tak…
We present results from a 25 ksec CHANDRA ACIS-S observation of galaxies NGC4438 and NGC4435 in the Virgo Cluster. X-ray emission in NGC4438 is observed in a ~700 pc nuclear region, a 2.3 kpc spherical bulge, and a network of filaments extending 4-10 kpc to the W and SW of the galaxy. The X-ray emission in all 3 regions is highly correlated to similar features observed in Halpha. Spectra of the filaments and bulge are well represented by a 0.4 keV MEKAL model with combined 0.3-2 keV intrinsic luminosity of 1.24x10^{40}erg/s, electron densities ~ 0.02-0.04 cm^{-3}, cooling times of 400-700 Myr …
The most massive galaxies in the present day universe are the giant ellipticals found in the centers of rich clusters. These have old, coeval stellar populations, suggesting they formed at high redshift, and are expected to host supermassive black holes (SMBHs). The recent detection of several high-redshift radio galaxies (HzRGs) at submm wavelengths confirms that indeed some massive galaxies may have formed the bulk of their stellar populations in spectacular dust-enshrouded starbursts at high-z. In this letter we compare sensitive Chandra X-ray images - which identify actively-fueled SMBHs -…
