Single-crystalline (Lu, Ca)Ba2Cu3O7-d (Lu(Ca)123) whiskers have been successfully grown using the Te-doping method. X-ray diffraction patterns of Lu(Ca)123 whiskers showed sharp (0 0 l) peaks corresponding to REBa2Cu3O7-d phase (RE = rare earth elements). Transport measurements showed that the superconducting transition occurred at 83 K in the obtained whiskers.
Single-crystal whiskers of REBa2Cu3Ox (RE-123, RE: rare earth element) cuprate superconductors were successfully grown using Te-doped precursors utilizing the concept of high-entropy-alloys (HEAs) at the RE site. The obtained whiskers were 0.5-1.0 mm length with approximately 10 um thickness. The width of the flat surface, which corresponds to the ab-plane, was 10-50 um. The RE site of the grown whiskers could be easily substituted by large ionic radius RE elements (Gd, Dy, and Ho). Substitution with small ionic radius RE elements (Tm, Yb, and Lu) resulted in the opposite trend. The supercondu…
High-transition temperature superconducting whiskers of Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2}$CaCu$_{2}$O$_{8+δ}$ were successfully grown from pulverized amorphous precursors. The obtained whiskers revealed a typical composition and diffraction patterns of a superconducting Bi-2212 phase. The whiskers from tiny precursors exhibit a spiral feature, suggesting a contribution from the growth mechanism of both vapor-liquid-solid and compressive stress models. The proposed method provides longer whiskers against the growth period, compared with that from conventional root-growth method.
Three growth methods were tested for producing high-transition temperature superconducting Bi$_2$Sr$_2$Ca$_{n-1}$Cu$_n$O$_{2n+4+δ}$ whiskers, employing different ways to focus a compressive stress and size effect of the precursors. First, thermographic imaging was used to investigate thermal stress from temperature distribution in the precursors during growth annealing. To enhance thermal stress in the precursors, a thermal cycling method and an Ag-paste coating method were proposed and found to significantly accelerate the whisker growth. The use of pulverized precursors also promoted whisker…
Using stress-controlled amorphous precursors, we have successfully grown large $Bi_{2}$$Sr_{2}$$Ca_{\textit{n}-1}$$Cu_{\textit{n}}$$O_{\textit{y}}$ (Bi-based) high-transition temperature superconducting whiskers. Especially, under a high compressive stress attained by 1 GPa pelletizing, the crystal size of a whisker was significantly enhanced up to 9.5 mm length (growth period: 96 h) which is 2.4 times larger than that of the conventional amorphous-precursors method. In addition, by using the stress-controlled precursors, the number of the obtained Bi-based whiskers were also increased by a fa…
We managed to synthesize non-linear YBa2Cu3Ox whiskers, i.e. half loops or kinked shapes, which are promising candidates for solid-state devices based on the intrinsic Josephson effect and with improved electrical connections. We report on a complete characterization of their structural properties via synchrotron nanoprobe as well as laboratory single-crystal diffraction techniques. This investigation allowed us to fully disclose the growth mechanism, which leads to the formation of curved whiskers. The superconducting properties are evaluated in comparison with the straight counterpart, revea…
We report the measurement of the a-axis fluctuation conductivity in zero field for Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+x microcrystals. A good geometrical characterization and an original method for data analysis allow to determine its temperature behaviour to a high accuracy. The correct application of the complete fluctuation theory [A. A. Varlamov et al., Adv. Phys. 48, 655 (1999)], with a minor correction for the k_tilde factor, leads to the conclusion that the anomalous MT term is the most important contribution throughout the whole temperature range of interest. More traditional alternative interpretations of…
Superconducting whisker like and bulk single crystals of PrFeAs(O,F) were grown at 3 GPa and 1500 C from NaAs flux using the cubic anvil high pressure and high temperature technique. The ribbon shaped whisker like crystals were 400-1300 micrometers in length, 40-70 micrometers in width, and 5-10 micrometers in thickness with the long sharp edge in the ab plane and the c axis perpendicular to the face. The grown bulk crystals were found to have irregular plate like shapes with linear sizes up to 1 mm and 120 micrometers in thickness. The both type of single crystalline objects are crystallized …
Single-crystal whiskers of RBa2Cu3Ox (R-123, R = Sm, Eu, Gd, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, and Y) were successfully grown from Sb- or Te-doped precursors with a nominal composition of R1.5Ba2.75-3.00Cu3M0.5Ox (M: Sb,Te). The whiskers were grown parallel to the ab-plane with the following typical dimensions: 2-8 mm in length, 20-80 \mum in width, and 10-30 \mum in thickness. In the case of rare-earth ions (R3+) with a small ionic radius (Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, and Y), R-123 whiskers were grown from Te-doped precursors. The growths of Y-123 and Ho-123 whiskers were confirmed using both Te-doped and Sb-doped …
This report describes some transport and magnetic properties of doped Bi2212 and Bi2223 superconducting whiskers. These materials have advantages over polycrystalline sample as well as large bulk crystals in that they provide narrow transitions in resistance versus temperature as well as in magnetization versus temperature curves. In addition they are easy to grow and and have short oxygen annealing times. Here Data on transport and magnetic properties of these superconducting whiskers are presented.
Bi2Sr2-xLaxCaCu2O8+d superconducting whiskers were successfully grown from Bi-rich meltscontaining various La contents. Effect of La-doping on the whisker growth, structure and superconductivity has been studied. It has been found that the whiskers can be grown only from La-doped melts, no whisker was obtained from the La-free melt x=0. Within the doping region x=0.025-0.3, all the grown whiskers are of the Bi-2212 pure phase. The c-axis lattice constant decreases with increasing the La content in the melt. The effect of La doping on the superconductivity is similar to that of other rare earth…
We study the surface state of a doped topological crystalline insulator in the superconducting state. Motivated by Sn$_{1-x}$In$_x$Te, we consider fully gapped pair potentials and calculate the surface spectral function. It is found that mirror-protected zero-energy Andreev bound states appear at the (001) surface and that these states can move along the mirror symmetric line on the surface Brillouin zone. We also show that the surface Andreev bound state changes systematically with doping due to the presence of the Dirac surface state in the normal state.
We examine the superconducting anisotropy $γ_c = (m_c / m_{ab})^{1/2}$ of a metallic high-$T_c$ superconductor MgB$_2$ by measuring the magnetic torque of a single crystal. The anisotropy $γ_c$ does not depend sensitively on the applied magnetic field at 10 K. We obtain the anisotropy parameter $γ_c = 4.31 \pm 0.14$. The torque curve shows the sharp hysteresis peak when the field is applied parallel to the boron layers. This comes from the intrinsic pinning and is experimental evidence for the occurrence of superconductivity in the boron layers.
The pressure dependence, up to 11.3 kbar, of basic parameters of the superconducting state, such as the critical temperature (Tc), the lower and the upper critical fields, the coherence length, the penetration depth, and their anisotropy, was determined from magnetic measurements performed for two singlecrystalline samples of FeTe0.5Se0.5. We have found pressure-induced enhancement of all of the superconducting state properties, which entails a growth of the density of superconducting carriers. However, we noticed more pronounced increase in superconducting carrier density under pressure than …
We report a mechanical point-contact spectroscopy study on the single crystalline NbGe$_2$ with a superconducting transition temperature $T\rm_c$ = 2.0 - 2.1 K. The differential conductance curves at 0.3 K can be well fitted by a single gap s-wave Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk model and the temperature dependent gap follows a standard Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer behavior, yielding $Δ_0 \sim$ 0.32 meV and 2$Δ_0$/$k\rm_{B}$$T\rm_{c}$ = 3.62 in the weak coupling limit. In magnetic field, the superconducting gap at 0.3 K keeps constant up to $H_{c1}\sim$150 Oe and gradually decreases until $H_{c2}\sim$35…
Single crystal neutron diffraction study has been performed on new superconductor A2Fe4Se5, where A = Cs, K, (Tl,Rb) and (Tl,K), and the same Fe vacancy ordered crystal structure and the same block checkerboard antiferromagne tic order recently discovered in the K2Fe4Se5 superconductor are observed. Thus, all known alkali metal and/or Tl intercalated iron selenide superconductors share common crystalline and magnetic structure. Investigation on electronic process in these new superconductors, for which a different electronic structure from those in previous Fe-based high-Tc superconductors is …
Homoepitaxial diamond layers doped with boron in the 10^20-10^21 /cm3 range are shown to be type II superconductors with sharp transitions (~0.2K) at temperatures increasing from 0 to 2.1 K with boron contents. The critical concentration for the onset of superconductivity is about 5-7 10^20 /cm3, close to the metal-insulator transition. The H-T phase diagram has been obtained from transport and a.c. susceptibility measurements down to 300mK. These results bring new quantitative constraints on the theoretical models proposed for superconductivity in diamond.
Single crystals of Fe(1+x)Te(1-y)Se(y) have been grown with a controlled Fe excess and Se doping, and the crystal structure has been refined for various compositions. The systematic investigation of magnetic and superconducting properties as a function of the structural parameters shows how the material can be driven into various ground states, depending on doping and the structural modifications. Our results prove that the occupation of the additional Fe site, Fe2, enhances the spin localization. By reducing the excess Fe, the antiferromagnetic ordering is weakened, and the superconducting gr…
Resistivity and magnetic susceptibility measurements under external pressure were performed on single-crystals NaFe1-xCoxAs (x=0, 0.01, 0.028, 0.075, 0.109). The maximum Tc enhanced by pressure in both underdoped and optimally doped NaFe1-xCoxAs is the same, as high as 31 K. The overdoped sample with x = 0.075 also shows a positive pressure effect on Tc, and an enhancement of Tc by 13 K is achieved under pressure of 2.3 GPa. All the superconducting samples show large positive pressure coefficient on superconductivity, being different from Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2. However, the superconductivity cannot…
We report on the superconducting properties of A_{x}Fe_{2-y}Se_{2} (A = Rb, K) single crystals studied with the muon spin relaxation or rotation (\muSR) technique. At low temperatures, close to 90% of the sample volumes exhibit large-moment magnetic order which impedes the investigation of their superconducting properties by \muSR. On the other hand, about 10% of the sample volumes remain paramagnetic and clearly show a superconducting response. The temperature dependence of the superconducting carrier density was analyzed within the framework of a single s-wave gap scenario. The zero-temperat…
Typically the superconducting phase weakens at several points with the increase in disorder before it is distroyed in the 2d-thin films. This may lead to an inhomogeneous superconducting state without a continuous phase. Here we present scanning tunneling spectroscopy measurements at 0.1 K in the disordered polycrystalline film of TiN describing the nanoscale size features of the superconducting state. The imaging shows imcommensurate charge density modulations, originating at the crystalline bounadries, and intercepted on large scale by the beat patterns in the regions of overlap. Electronic …
Discovery of exotic phases of matter from the topologically non-trivial systems not only makes the research on topological materials more interesting but also enriches our understanding of the fascinating physics of such materials. Pb$_{0.6}$Sn$_{0.4}$Te was recently shown to be a topological crystalline insulator. Here we show that by forming a mesoscopic point-contact using a normal non-superconducting elemental metal on the surface of Pb$_{0.6}$Sn$_{0.4}$Te a novel superconducting phase is created locally in a confined region under the point-contact. This happens while the bulk of the sampl…
The observation of non-bulk superconductivity with an unexpectedly high onset transition temperature Tc up to ~ 49 K in non-superconducting single crystalline CaFe2As2 upon rare-earth doping has raised interesting questions concerning its origin. Several possibilities including interfacial mechanism have been proposed to account for the unusual observation. In an attempt to differentiate such propositions, we have carried out a systematic compositional and magnetic study on single crystals of nominal (Ca1-xPrx)Fe2As2 with 0 <= x <= 0.13 throughout the solubility range of Pr, which covers both …
Single crystalline FeTe$_{0.61}$Se$_{0.39}$ with a sharp superconducting transition at $T_{\textrm{c}} \sim$ 14 K is synthesized via slow furnace cooling followed by low-temperature annealing. The effect of annealing on the chemical and superconducting inhomogeneities is carefully characterized. We also report resistivity, magnetization, and magneto-optical images of this crystal. Based on the Bean model, critical current density is estimated to exceed $1 \times 10^5$ A/cm$^2$ below 5 K under zero field. Weak fish-tail effect is identified at lower temperatures.
We report the evolution of the Zeeman-mediated superconducting phase diagram (PD) in ultra-thin crystalline Al films. Parallel critical field measurements, down to 50 mK, were made across the superconducting tricritical point of films ranging in thickness from 7 ML to 30 ML. The resulting phase boundaries were compared with the quasi-classical theory of a Zeeman-mediated transition between a homogeneous BCS condensate and a spin polarized Fermi liquid. Films thicker than $\sim$20 ML showed good agreement with theory, but thinner films exhibited an anomalous PD that cannot be reconciled within …
In a recent paper [Phys. Rev. B 66, 012501 (2002)], torque data measured on a MgB2 single crystal in fields from 10 to 60 kOe at 10 K were presented. The authors obtained the anisotropy gamma by fitting a theoretical expression to the data and concluded that the anisotropy is field independent gamma \approx 4.3. They also reported the observation of "intrinsic pinning", which they take as experimental evidence for the occurence of superconductivity in the boron layers. In this comment, we discuss the range of validity of the theoretical expression used by the authors and show that the conclusi…
Polarization-dependent x-ray absorption spectroscopy at the B 1s edge of single-crystalline Mg(x)Al(1-x)B(2) reveals a strongly anisotropic electronic structure near the Fermi energy. Comparing spectra for superconducting compounds (x=0.9, 1.0) with those for the non-superconductor x=0.0 gives direct evidence on the importance of an in-plane spectral feature crossing E_F for the superconducting properties of the diborides. Good agreement is found with the projected B 2p density of states from LDA band structure calculations.
We succeeded in growing single crystalline SmFeAsO1-xFx with exceptionally high fluorine concentration by using a CsCl flux method. Comparing to conventional flux methods, this method can introduce about double the amount of fluorine into the oxygen site. The obtained single crystal shows the highest superconducting transition temperature (Tc = 57.5 K) in single crystalline iron pnictides. In addition, the residual resistivity ratio (RRR) is almost three times as large as that of previously reported single crystals. This suggests that our single crystals are suitable for investigation of the i…
Superconducting nanowires can be synthesised in high-throughput chemical routes and hold great promise as a low-dissipative material for superconducting devices. The applicability of superconducting nanowires, however, has been limited due to the lack of an adequate method to fit the nanowires into given electronic circuits. One of the biggest obstacles is to connect metal terminals to superconducting nanowires in order to establish electric contacts. One attractive method to surmount this difficulty is to synthesise superconducting nanowires directly upon metal terminals such that the nanowir…
Two dimensional (2D) superconducting systems are of great importance to exploring exotic quantum physics. Recent development of fabrication techniques stimulates the studies of high quality single crystalline 2D superconductors, where intrinsic properties give rise to unprecedented physical phenomena. Here we report the observation of Zeeman-type spin-orbit interaction protected superconductivity (Zeeman-protected superconductivity) in 4 monolayer (ML) to 6 ML crystalline Pb films grown on striped incommensurate (SIC) Pb layers on Si(111) substrates by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). Anomalous l…
The thermal conductivity of the doped topological crystalline insulator, Sn$_{0.6}$In$_{0.4}$Te superconducting single crystal with $T_c =$ 4.1 K, was measured down to 50 mK. It is found that the residual linear term $κ_0/T$ is negligible in zero magnetic field. The $κ_0/T$ shows a slow field dependence at low magnetic field. These results suggest that the superconducting gap is nodeless, unless there exist point nodes with directions perpendicular to the heat current. Due to its high-symmetry fcc crystal structure of Sn$_{0.6}$In$_{0.4}$Te, however, such point nodes can be excluded. Therefore…
We report on the fabrication and measurements of a superconducting junction of a single-crystalline Au nanowire, connected to Al electrodes. Current-Voltage characteristic curve shows clear supercurrent branch below the superconducting transition temperature of Al and quantized voltage plateaus on application of microwave radiation, as expected from Josephson relations. Highly transparent (0.95) contacts very close to an ideal limit of 1 are formed at the interface between the normal metal (Au) and the superconductor (Al). The very high transparency is ascribed to the single crystallinity of a…
Iron-chalcogenide single crystals with the nominal composition FeSe$_{0.5}$Te$_{0.5}$ and a transition temperature of $T_{c}\simeq14.6$ K were synthesized by the Bridgman method. The structural and anisotropic superconducting properties of those crystals were investigated by means of single crystal X-ray and neutron powder diffraction, SQUID and torque magnetometry, and muon-spin rotation. Room temperature neutron powder diffraction reveals that 95% of the crystal volume is of the same tetragonal structure as PbO. The structure refinement yields a stoichiometry of Fe_1.045Se_0.406Te_0.594. Add…
Single-crystals of the new ferromagnetic superconductor UCoGe have been grown. The quality of as-grown samples can be significantly improved by a heat-treatment procedure, which increases the residual resistance ratio (RRR) from ~5 to ~30. Magnetization and resistivity measurements show the annealed samples have a sharp ferromagnetic transition with a Curie temperature T_C is 2.8 K. The ordered moment of 0.06 mu_B is directed along the orthorhombic c-axis. Superconductivity is found below a resistive transition temperature T_s = 0.65 K.
57Fe-Mössbauer studies of superconducting Rb0.8Fe1.6Se2.0 with TC = 32.4 K were performed on single-crystalline and polycrystalline samples in the temperature range 4.2 K to 295 K. They reveal the presence of 88% magnetic and 12% non-magnetic Fe2+ species with the same polarization dependence of their hyperfine spectra. The magnetic species are attributed to the 16i sites of the \surd5 x \surd5 x 1 superstructure, and non-magnetic species to a nano-sized phase postulated from recent studies of superconducting KxFe2-ySe2 systems. The 57Fe-spectrum of a single-crystalline sample in an external f…
We present the results of measurements of the thermal and electrical conductivity in the basal plane of single-crystalline MgB_2 between 2 and 300 K. The analysis of the temperature dependence of the thermal conductivity gives supporting evidence for two different gaps on different sheets of the Fermi surface in the superconducting state. The zero-temperature values of the two gaps are D_1 (0) = 5.3 meV and D_2 (0) = 1.65 meV.
The interplay of time-reversal and $n$-fold rotation symmetries ($n=2,4,6$) is known to bring a new class of topological crystalline insulators (TCIs) having $n$ surface Dirac cones due to surface rotation anomaly. We show that the proximity-induced $s$-wave superconductivity on the surface of these TCIs yields a topological superconducting phase in which two Majorana zero modes are bound to a vortex, and that $n$-fold rotation symmetry ($n=2,4,6$) enriches the topological classification of a superconducting vortex from $\mathbb{Z}_2$ to $\mathbb{Z}_2\times\mathbb{Z}_2$. Using a model of a thr…
Indium substitution turns the topological crystalline insulator (TCI) Pb$_{0.5}$Sn$_{0.5}$Te into a possible topological superconductor. To investigate the effect of the indium concentration on the crystal structure and superconducting properties of (Pb$_{0.5}$Sn$_{0.5}$)$_{1-x}$In$_{x}$Te, we have grown high-quality single crystals using a modified floating-zone method, and have performed systematic studies for indium content in the range $0\leq x\leq 0.35$. We find that the single crystals retain the rock salt structure up to the solubility limit of indium ($x\sim0.30$). Experimental depende…
The details of the superconducting to quantum metal transition (SQMT) at T=0 are an open problem that invokes much interest in the nature of this exotic and unexpected ground state1-3. However, the SQMT was not yet investigated in a crystalline 2D superconductor with coexisting and fluctuating quantum orders. Here, we report the observation of a SQMT in 2D ion-gel gated 1T-TiSe24, driven by magnetic field. A field-induced crossover between Bose quantum metal and vortex quantum creeping with increasing field is observed. We discuss the interplay between superconducting and CDW fluctuations (dis…
Thin films of optimally-doped (001)-oriented YBa2Cu3O7-δ are epitaxially integrated on silicon (001) through growth on a single crystalline SrTiO3 buffer. The former is grown using pulsed-laser deposition and the latter is grown on Si using oxide molecular beam epitaxy. The single crystal nature of the SrTiO3 buffer enables high quality YBa2Cu3O7-δ films exhibiting high transition temperatures to be integrated on Si. For a 30 nm thick SrTiO3 buffer, 50 nm thick YBa2Cu3O7-δ films that exhibit a transition temperature of ~ 93 K, and a narrow transition width (< 5 K) are achieved. The integration…
Topological superconductors possess a nodeless superconducting gap in the bulk and gapless zero energy modes, known as "Majorana zero modes", at the boundary of a finite system. In this work, we introduce a new class of topological superconductors, which are protected by nonsymmorphic crystalline symmetry and thus dubbed "topological nonsymmorphic crystalline superconductors". We construct an explicit Bogoliubov-de Gennes type of model for this superconducting phase in the D class and show how Majorana zero modes in this model are protected by glide symmetry. Furthermore, we generalize the cla…
We report normal and superconducting properties of the Rashba-type noncentrosymmetric com- pound CaIrSi3, using single crystalline samples with nearly 100% superconducting volume fraction. The electronic density of states revealed by the hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy can be well explained by the relativistic first-principle band calculation. This indicates that strong spin-orbit interaction indeed affects the electronic states of this compound. The obtained H - T phase diagram exhibits only approximately 10% anisotropy, indicating that the superconducting properties are almost three di…
A nematic topological superconductor has an order parameter symmetry, which spontaneously breaks the crystalline symmetry in its superconducting state. This state can be observed, for example, by thermodynamic or upper critical field experiments in which a magnetic field is rotated with respect to the crystalline axes. The corresponding physical quantity then directly reflects the symmetry of the order parameter. We present a study on the superconducting upper critical field of the Nb-doped topological insulator NbxBi2Se3 for various magnetic field orientations parallel and perpendicular to th…
Resistivities of single-crystalline as well as poly-crystalline samples of CeOBiS2 without fluorine doping were measured at temperatures down to 0.13 K, and were compared with those of poly-crystalline LaOBiS2 and PrOBiS2. Both poly-crystalline and single-crystalline CeOBiS2 exhibited zero resistivity below 1.2 K while poly-crystalline LaOBiS2 and PrOBiS2 did not show zero resistivity down to 0.13 K. Superconducting transition temperature of CeOBiS2 was reduced by increasing the applied current density. The superconductivity of CeOBiS2 without chemical doping is likely triggered by the carrier…
Although quasi-two-dimensional organic superconductors such as $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Cu(NCS)$_2$ seem to be very clean systems, with apparent quasiparticle mean-free paths of several thousand Å, the superconducting transition is intrinsically broad (e.g $\sim 1$ K wide for $T_c \approx 10$ K). We propose that this is due to the extreme anisotropy of these materials, which greatly exacerbates the statistical effects of spatial variations in the potential experienced by the quasiparticles. Using a statistical model, we are able to account for the experimental observations. A parameter $\bar{x}$, whi…
We report detailed investigations of the properties of a superconductor obtained by substituting In at the Sn site in the topological crystalline insulator (TCI), SnTe. Transport, magnetization and heat capacity measurements have been performed on crystals of Sn0.6In0.4Te, which is shown to be a bulk superconductor with Tc(onset) at ~4.70(5) K and Tc(zero) at ~3.50(5) K. The upper and lower critical fields are estimated to be μ0Hc2(0) = 1.42(3) T and μ0Hc1(0) = 0.90(3) mT respectively, while κ = 56.4(8) indicates this material is a strongly type II superconductor.
We present a comprehensive study of the binary intermetallic superconductor, BaSn5. High-quality single crystalline BaSn5 was grown out of Sn flux. Detailed thermodynamic and transport measurements were performed to study BaSn5's normal and superconducting state properties. This material appears to be a strongly coupled, multiband superconductor. Hc2(T)is almost isotropic. De Haas-van Alphen oscillations were observed and two effective masses were estimated from the FFT spectra. Hydrostatic pressure causes a decrease in the superconducting transition temperature at the rate of ~ -0.053 K/kbar.
We present magnetisation data on crystalline and polycrystalline MgB2 before and after irradiation with ~1MeV protons. In the virgin crystal the critical current density is below our noise floor of 103A/cm2 over most of the field range. However, after irradiation a peak occurs in the current density as a function of applied magnetic field as the upper critical field Hc2 is approached. After subsequent ageing over a time period of three months, the peak effect is greatly enhanced, exhibiting much stronger pinning over a wide field range, and the upper critical field is approximately doubled, ac…
Topological crystalline insulators (TCIs) have been of great interest in the area of condensed matter physics. We investigated the effect of indium substitution on the crystal structure and transport properties in the TCI system (Pb$_{1-x}$Sn$_{x}$)$_{1-y}$In$_{y}$Te. For samples with a tin concentration $x\le50\%$, the low-temperature resisitivities show a dramatic variation as a function of indium concentration: with up to ~2% indium doping the samples show weak-metallic behavior, similar to their parent compounds; with ~6% indium doping, samples have true bulk-insulating resistivity and pre…
We study the c-axis transport of stacked, intrinsic junctions in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+y single crystals, fabricated by the double-sided ion beam processing technique from single crystal whiskers. Measurements of the I-V characteristics of these samples allow us to obtain the temperature and voltage dependence of the quasiparticle c-axis conductivity in the superconducting state, the Josephson critical current, and the superconducting gap. We show that the BCS d-wave model in the clean limit for resonant impurity scattering with a significant contribution from coherent interlayer tunneling, describes …
We have measured the temperature dependence of resistivity in single-crystalline CeNiGe$_{3}$ under hydrostatic pressure in order to establish the characteristic pressure-temperature phase diagram. The transition temperature to AFM-I phase $T_{\rm N1}$ = 5.5 K at ambient pressure initially increases with increasing pressure and has a maximum at $\sim$ 3.0 GPa. Above 2.3 GPa, a clear zero-resistivity is observed (SC-I phase) and this superconducting (SC) state coexists with AFM-I phase. The SC-I phase suddenly disappears at 3.7 GPa simultaneously with the appearance of an additional kink anomal…
Two single crystalline samples with the same nominal composition of Rb0.8Fe2Se2 prepared via slightly different precursor routes under the same thermal processing conditions were investigated at ambient and high pressures. One sample was found superconducting with a Tc of ~31 K without the previously reported resistivity-hump and the other was unexpectedly found to be a narrow-gap semiconductor. While the high pressure data can be understood in terms of pressure-induced variation in doping, the detailed doping effect on superconductivity is yet to be determined.
X-ray diffraction multipole refinements of single-crystalline Mg$_x$Al$_{1-x}$B$_2$ and polarization-dependent near-edge x-ray absorption fine structure at the B 1$s$ edge reveal a strongly anisotropic electronic structure. Comparing the data for superconducting compounds ($x= 0.8$, 1.0) with those for the non-superconductor ($x=0$) gives direct evidence for a rearrangement of the hybridizations of the boron $p_z$ bonds and underline the importance of holes in the $σ$-bonded covalent $sp^2$ states for the superconducting properties of the diborides. The data indicate that Mg is approximately d…
Superconducting topological crystalline insulators (TCI) are predicted to host new topological phases protected by crystalline symmetries, but available materials are insufficiently suitable for surface studies. To induce superconductivity at the surface of a prototypical TCI SnTe, we use molecular beam epitaxy to grow a heterostructure of SnTe and a high-Tc superconductor Fe(Te,Se), utilizing a 'buffer' layer to bridge the large lattice mismatch between SnTe and Fe(Te,Se). Using low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy, we measure a prominent spectral gap on the surface …
