We study the effect of a control beam on a Lambda electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) system in 87Rb. The control beam couples one ground state to another excited state forming a four level N-system. Phase coherent beams to drive the N-system are produced using a double injection scheme. We show that the control beam can be used to Stark shift or split the EIT resonance. Finally, we show that the when the control beam is on-resonance one observes a Doppler-free and sub-natural absorptive resonance with a width of order 100 kHz. Crucially, this narrow absorptive resonance only occurs when atoms with a range of velocities are present, as is the case in a room temperature vapour.
Nonlinear and nonlocal effects are discussed in the interaction of laser fields with thermal Rydberg atoms in electromagnetically induced transparency configuration. We show that under the crucial approximation that the time variation in the dipole-dipole interactions due to atomic motions can be neglected in an ensemble average, an analytical form can be obtained for the nonlocal nonlinear atomic response of the thermal medium, and study it for different parameter cases. We further propose a generalized model to describe the modulational instability (MI) in absorptive nonlinear media, in orde…
Modifications in the spontaneous emission rate of an excited atom that are caused by extinction effects in a nearby dielectric medium are analyzed in a quantummechanical model, in which the medium consists of spherical scatterers with absorptive properties. Use of the dyadic Green function of the electromagnetic field near a a dielectric sphere leads to an expression for the change in the emission rate as a series of multipole contributions for which analytical formulas are obtained. The results for the modified emission rate as a function of the distance between the excited atom and the diele…
The change in the decay rate of an excited atom that is brought about by extinction and thermal-radiation effects in a nearby dielectric medium is determined from a quantummechanical model. The medium is a collection of randomly distributed thermally-excited spherical scatterers with absorptive properties. The modification of the decay rate is described by a set of correction functions for which analytical expressions are obtained as sums over contributions from the multipole moments of the scatterers. The results for the modified decay rate as a function of the distance between the excited at…
We determine the incoherent spectrum, squeezing properties and second-order correlation function of the collective atomic degrees of freedom in absorptive optical bistability. This is accomplished via a linearized Fokker-Planck equation in the positive P representation, guided by the analysis of [H. J. Carmichael, Phys. Rev. A 33, 3262 (1986)] which does not resort to adiabatic elimination. We focus on the regimes of weak and strong intracavity excitation, addressing the good-cavity and bad-cavity limits as well as the limit of collective strong coupling. Adiabatic elimination of the intracavi…
The quantum interference assisted enhanced optical activity due to the emergence of a steady-state atomic polarization is investigated. The Rubidium atoms in an antirelaxation coated cell provide a suitable platform to address the phenomena at multiple Larmors frequencies. It interacts with a narrow bandwidth frequency comb generated by the frequency modulation of the light field. The Lindblad master equation with a trichromatic field provides a microscopic picture of the atomic response to the narrow bandwidth frequency comb. The directive of the relative phase between the light fields, in th…
The laser cooling and trapping of ultracold neutral dysprosium has been recently demonstrated using the broad, open 421-nm cycling transition. Narrow-line magneto-optical trapping of Dy on longer wavelength transitions would enable the preparation of ultracold Dy samples suitable for loading optical dipole traps and subsequent evaporative cooling. We have identified the closed 741-nm cycling transition as a candidate for the narrow-line cooling of Dy. We present experimental data on the isotope shifts, the hyperfine constants A and B, and the decay rate of the 741-nm transition. In addition, w…
Electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) resonances using the $5\rm{S}_{1/2}\rightarrow5\rm{P}_{3/2}\rightarrow5\rm{D}_{5/2}$ ladder-system in optically thick Rb atomic vapour are studied. We observe a strong line narrowing effect and gain at the $5\rm{S}_{1/2}\rightarrow5\rm{P}_{3/2}$ transition wavelength due to an energy-pooling assisted frequency conversion with characteristics similar to four-wave mixing. As a result it is possible to observe tunable and switchable transparency resonances with amplitude close to $100\%$ and a linewidth of 15 MHz. In addition, the large line narrowin…
Quantum emitters in confined arrays exhibit geometry dependent collective dynamics. In particular, nanoscopic regular polygon-shaped arrays can possess sub-radiant states with an exciton lifetime growing exponentially with emitter number. We show that by placing an extra resonant absorptive dipole at the ring center, such a structure becomes a highly efficient single-photon absorber with tailorable frequency. Interestingly, for exactly nine emitters in a nonagon, as it appears in a common biological light-harvesting complex (LHC2), we find a distinct minimum for its most dark state decay rate …
Short wavelength Free-Electron Lasers (FELs) are the newest light sources available to scientists to probe a wide range of phenomena, with chemical, physical and biological applications, using soft and hard X-rays. These sources include the currently most powerful light sources in the world (hard X-ray sources) and are characterised by extremely high powers and high transverse coherence, but the first FELs had reduced longitudinal coherence. Now it is possible to achieve good longitudinal coherence (narrow bandwidth in the frequency domain) and here we discuss and illustrate a range of experim…
We propose a method to exploit high finesse optical resonators for light assisted coherent manipulation of atomic ensembles, overcoming the limit imposed by the finite response time of the cavity. The key element of our scheme is to rapidly switch the interaction between the atoms and the cavity field with an auxiliary control process as, for example, the light shift induced by an optical beam. The scheme is applicable to many different atomic species, both in trapped and free fall configurations, and can be adopted to control the internal and/or external atomic degrees of freedom. Our method …
The decay of an excited atom in the presence of a medium that both scatters and absorbs radiation is studied with the help of a quantum-electrodynamical model. The medium is represented by a half space filled with a randomly distributed set of non-overlapping spheres, which consist of a linear absorptive dielectric material. The absorption effects are described by means of a quantized damped-polariton theory. It is found that the effective susceptibility of the bulk does not fully account for the medium-induced change in the atomic decay rate. In fact, surface effects contribute to the modific…
Atomic bandpass filters are widely used in a variety of applications, owing to their high peak transmission and narrow bandwidth. Much of the previous literature has used the Faraday effect to realize such filters, where an axial magnetic field is applied across the atomic medium. Here we show that by using a non-axial magnetic field, the performance of these filters can be improved in comparison to the Faraday geometry. We optimize the performance of these filters using a numerical model and verify their performance by direct quantitative comparison with experimental data. We find excellent a…
We study optical bistable behavior of a Rydberg electromagnetically-induced transparency (EIT) atomic medium in a unidirectional optical ring-cavity. Due to strong van del Waal (vdW) interactions between the atoms, both optical nonlinear dispersion and nonlinear absorption coefficients are enhanced substantially. Under the condition of two-photon on resonance, we show that probe one-photon detuning can change the phase of the third order nonlinearity coefficient, which tunes the character of the optical bistability within different ratios of dispersive and absorptive types. This enables the si…
We demonstrate the efficient heralded generation of high purity narrow-bandwidth single photons from a transient collective spin excitation in a hot atomic vapour cell. Employing optical homodyne tomography, we fully reconstruct the density matrix of the generated photon and observe a Wigner function reaching the zero value without correcting for any inefficiencies. The narrow bandwidth of the photon produced is accompanied by a high generation rate yielding a high spectral brightness. The source is therefore compatible with atomic-based quantum memories as well as other applications in light-…
We report on the observation and coherent excitation of atoms on the narrow inner-shell orbital transition, connecting the erbium ground state $[\mathrm{Xe}] 4f^{12} (^3\text{H}_6)6s^{2}$ to the excited state $[\mathrm{Xe}] 4f^{11}(^4\text{I}_{15/2})^05d (^5\text{D}_{3/2}) 6s^{2} (15/2,3/2)^0_7$. This transition corresponds to a wavelength of 1299 nm and is optically closed. We perform high-resolution spectroscopy to extract the $g_J$-factor of the $1299$-nm state and to determine the frequency shift for four bosonic isotopes. We further demonstrate coherent control of the atomic state and ext…
We observe narrowband pairs of time-correlated photons of wavelengths 776\,nm and 795\,nm from non-degenerate four-wave mixing in a laser-cooled atomic ensemble of $^{87}${Rb} using a cascade decay scheme. Coupling the photon pairs into single mode fibers, we observe an instantaneous rate of 7700 pairs per second with silicon avalanche photodetectors, and an optical bandwidth below 30\,MHz. Detection events exhibit a strong correlation in time ($g^{(2)}(τ=0)\approx5800$), and a high coupling efficiency indicated by a pair-to-single ratio of 23%. The violation of the Cauchy-Schwarz inequality b…
Highly stable laser sources based on narrow atomic transitions provide a promising platform for direct generation of stable and accurate optical frequencies. Here we investigate a simple system operating in the high-temperature regime of cold atoms. The interaction between a thermal ensemble of $^{88}$Sr at mK temperatures and a medium-finesse cavity produces strong collective coupling and facilitates high atomic coherence which causes lasing on the dipole forbidden $^1$S$_0 \leftrightarrow ^3$P$_1$ transition. We experimentally and theoretically characterize the lasing threshold and evolution…
It is well known that ultranarrow electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) resonances can be observed in atomic gases at room temperature. We report here the experimental observation of another type of ultranarrow resonances, as narrow as the EIT ones, in a Λ-system selected by light polarization in metastable 4He at room temperature. It is shown to be due to coherent population oscillations in an open two-level system (TLS). For perpendicular linearly polarized coupling and probe beams, this system can be considered as two coupled open TLSs, in which the ground state populations exhibit…
We describe a technique to measure photon pair joint spectra by detecting the time-correlation beat note when non-degenerate photon pairs interfere at a beamsplitter. The technique implements a temporal analog of the Ghosh-Mandel effect with one photon counter and a time-resolved Hong-Ou-Mandel interference with two. It is well suited to characterize pairs of photons, each of which can interact with a single atomic species, as required to study recently predicted photon-photon interaction in sub-wavelength atomic arrays. With this technique, we characterize photon pairs from cavity-enhanced pa…
Simultaneous strong coherent pumping of the two transitions of a V-level atom with very differentdecay rates has been predicted to create almost perfect inversion on the narrower transition. Usingthe example of the blue and red transitions in Strontium we show that for suitable operatingconditions the corresponding resonant gain can be used to continuously operate a laser on thenarrow transition. In particular, for a strong detuning of the pump field with respect to the narrowtransition, coherent laser emission occurs close to the bare atomic transition frequency exhibitingonly a negligible co…
Starting from a multichannel quantum-defect theory, we derive analytic descriptions of a magnetic Feshbach resonance in an arbitrary partial wave $l$, and the atomic interactions around it. An analytic formula, applicable to both broad and narrow resonances of arbitrary $l$, is presented for ultracold atomic scattering around a Feshbach resonance. Other related issues addressed include (a) the parametrization of a magnetic Feshbach resonance of arbitrary $l$, (b) rigorous definitions of "broad" and "narrow" resonances of arbitrary $l$ and their different scattering characteristics, and (c) the…
We report on the first observation of stationary light pulses and narrowband light storage inside a hollow-core photonic crystal fiber. Laser-cooled atoms were first loaded into the fiber core providing strong light-matter coupling. Light pulses were then stored in a collective atomic excitation using a single control laser beam. By applying a second counterpropagating control beam, a light pulse could be brought to a standstill. Our work paves the way towards the creation of strongly-correlated many-body systems with photons and applications in the field of quantum information processing.
We use an atomic fountain clock to measure quantum scattering phase shifts precisely through a series of narrow, low-field Feshbach resonances at average collision energies below $1\,μ$K. Our low spread in collision energy yields phase variations of order $\pm π/2$ for target atoms in several $F,m_F$ states. We compare them to a theoretical model and establish the accuracy of the measurements and the theoretical uncertainties from the fitted potential. We find overall excellent agreement, with small statistically significant differences that remain unexplained.
We have detected and analyzed narrow, high contrast coherent population trapping resonances, which appear in transmission of the probe monochromatic light beam under action of the counterpropagating two-frequency laser radiation, on example of the nonclosed three level Λ-system formed by spectral components of the Doppler broadened D2 line of cesium atoms (in the cell with the rarefied Cs vapor). These nontrivial resonances are determined directly by the trapped atomic population on the definite lower level of the Λ-system and may be used in atomic frequency standards, sensitive magnetometers …
Using the process of cavity-enhanced spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC), we generate a narrow-band polarization-entangled photon pair resonant on the rubidium (Rb) D1 line (795 nm). The degenerate single-mode photon pair is selected by multiple temperature controlled etalons. The linewidth of generated polarization-entangled photon pairs is 15 MHz which matches the typical atomic memory bandwidth. The measured Bell parameter for the polarization-entangled photons S=2.73+-0.04 which violates the Bell-CHSH inequality by ~18 standard deviations. The presented entangled photon pair sour…
Narrow dark resonances associated with electromagnetically induced transparency play a key role in enhancing photon-photon interactions. The schemes realized to date relied on the existence of long-lived atomic states with strong van der Waals interactions. Here, we show that by placing an atomically thin semiconductor with ultra-fast radiative decay rate inside a \textcolor{black}{0D} cavity, it is possible to obtain narrow dark or bright resonances in transmission whose width could be much smaller than that of the cavity and bare exciton decay rates. While breaking of translational invarianc…
The method for observing the high-contrast and narrow-width resonances of electromagnetically induced absorption (EIA) in the Hanle configuration under counterpropagating light waves is proposed. We theoretically analyze the absorption of a probe light wave in presence of counterpropagating one with the same frequency as the function of a static magnetic field applied along the vectors of light waves, propagating in a vapour cell. Here, as an example, we study a "dark" type of atomic dipole transition Fg=1-->Fe=1 in D1 line of 87Rb, where usually the electromagnetically induced transparency (E…
We use a probabilistic method to describe the effect of laser noise on the laser-atom interaction, in the case that the atom is a two level system without spontaneous emission. The stochastic differential equation for the laser-atom interaction is analyzed in the sense of perturbation approach, and we construct a stochastic process corresponding to the time evolution of the atom's wave function, whose extra randomness is induced by the laser noise. It also provides the layout of a theory for the possible experiment of measuring the laser line width by driving a narrow atomic transition.
We present optical vector network analysis (OVNA) of an isotopically purified $^{166}$Er$^{3+}$:$^7$LiYF$_4$ crystal. The OVNA method is based on generation and detection of modulated optical sideband by using a radio-frequency vector network analyzer. This technique is widely used in the field of microwave photonics for the characterization of optical responses of optical devices such as filters and high-Q resonators. However, dense solid-state atomic ensembles induce a large phase shift on one of the optical sidebands which results in the appearance of extra features on the measured transmis…
Atomic and atom-like defects in the solid-state are widely explored for quantum computers, networks and sensors. Rare earth ions are an attractive class of atomic defects that feature narrow spin and optical transitions that are isolated from the host crystal, allowing incorporation into a wide range of materials. However, the realization of long electronic spin coherence times is hampered by magnetic noise from abundant nuclear spins in the most widely studied host crystals. Here, we demonstrate that Er$^{3+}$ ions can be introduced via ion implantation into TiO$_2$, a host crystal that has n…
Bright solitons in atomic Bose--Einstein condensates are strong candidates for high precision matter-wave interferometry, as their inherent stability against dispersion supports long interrogation times. An analog to a beam splitter is then a narrow potential barrier. A very narrow barrier is desirable for interferometric purposes, but in a typical realisation using a blue-detuned optical dipole potential, the width is limited by the laser wavelength. We investigate a soliton interferometry scheme using the geometric scalar potential experienced by atoms in a spatially dependent dark state to …
