The individual parts of the total angular momentum operator in interacting theories cannot satisfy the canonical angular momentum commutation rule, including those proposed in the above paper. Furthermore, the operators in the new proposal a) are non-local in general gauge, b) do not have proper Lorentz transformation properties, and c) do not have any known physical measurements.
The authors claim to have found a "proper", "gauge-invariant" definition of a charged-particle's momentum in gauge theory, which is more "superior" than the textbook version. I show that their result arises from a misunderstanding of gauge symmetry by generalizing the Coulomb gauge result indiscriminately and is not physical.
We reply to the Comment of X. Ji [arXiv:0810.4913] on our paper [PRL 100:232002 (2008)], concerning angular momentum algebra, locality, Lorentz covariance, and measurability of our gauge-invariant description of the spin and orbital angular momentum of quarks and gluons.
After our publication of the observed first indication for neutrinoless double beta decay in [KK-Evid01], a number of papers have been published [KK-Sar_Evid01,KK2-Sar_Evid01,KK3-Sar_Evid01,Ma02-Ev,Barg02-Ev,Ueh02-Ev,Mi n-Evid02,Chat-Evid02,Xing-Evid02,Ham-Evid02,Ahl-Kirch-Evid02,Ma-Evid2-02,Hab-Su z02,Mohap02-Evid,Kays02-Evid,Fodor02-Evid,Pakv02-Evid,Rodej02-Evid,Kowal02,Niel s02,He02-Evid,Josh02-Evid,Bran02-Evid,Cheng02-Evid,Smirn02-Evid,Wiss-Evid02] discussing its implications. The comments of Guseinov are critically analyzed. Contrary to his comments, it is pointed out that our formula for two-center overlap integrals over Slater type orbitals have been derived independently, not derived from the earlier works of Guseinov by changing the summation indices. Therefore, our algorithm is original, is not affected from possible instability problems and can be used in large scale calculations without loss of significant figures. Meanwhile, it should be stressed that his comment on the transformation of our formula into his formula proves the correctness of our algorithm a…
The comments of Guseinov on our paper (T. Ozdogan, S. Gumus and M. Kara, J. Math. Chem., 33 (2003) 181) are critically analyzed. Contrary to his comments, it is proved that the expansion formula for the product of two normalized associated Legendre functions in ellipsoidal coordinates and the expressions for two-center nuclear attraction integrals have been obtained independently, by the use of basic mathematical rules, not by changing the summation indices of expansion relationships contained in his articles. Therefore, our algorithm is original, is not affected from possible instability prob…
We introduce gauge-invariant quark and gluon angular momentum distributions after making a generalization of the angular momentum density operators. From the quark angular momentum distribution, we define the gauge-invariant and leading-twist quark {\it orbital} angular momentum distribution $L_q(x)$. The latter can be extracted from data on the polarized and unpolarized quark distributions and the off-forward distribution $E(x)$ in the forward limit. We comment upon the evolution equations obeyed by this as well as other orbital distributions considered in the literature.
We show that, when boosted to the infinite momentum frame, the quark and gluon orbital angular momentum operators defined in the nucleon spin sum rule of X. S. Chen et al. are the same as those derived from generalized transverse momentum distributions. This completes the connection between the infinite momentum limit of each term in that sum rule and experimentally measurable observables. We also show that these orbital angular momentum operators can be defined locally, and discuss the strategies of calculating them in lattice QCD.
Recently, X. Chen et al. proposed a new approach to the gauge invariant decomposition of the nucleon spin into helicity and orbital parts. The key ingredient in their construction is the separation of the gauge field into `physical' and `pure gauge' parts. We suggest a simple separation scheme and show that the resulting gluon helicity coincides with the first moment of the conventional polarized gluon distribution measurable in high energy experiments.
We present an explicit realization of the Chen et al. approach to the proton spin decomposition in terms of Wilson lines, generalizing the light-front gauge-invariant extensions discussed recently by Hatta. Particular attention is drawn to the residual gauge freedom by further separating the pure-gauge term into contour and residual terms. We show that the kinetic orbital angular momentum operator can be expressed in terms of the Wigner operator only when the momentum variable is integrated over. Finally, we confirm from twist-2 arguments that the advanced, retarded and antisymmetric light-fro…
In this work, we first introduced a generalized Wilson line gauge link that reproduces both staple and near straight links along the light cone in different parameter limits. We then studied the gauge-invariant bi-local orbital angular momentum operator with such a general gauge link, in the framework of Chen et. al. decomposition of gauge fields. At the appropriate combination of limits, the operator reproduces both Jaffe-Manohar and Ji's operator structure and offers a continuous analytical interpolation between the two.
Over recent years we have witnessed tremendous progresses in our understanding on the angular momentum decomposition. In the context of the proton spin problem in high energy processes the angular momentum decomposition by Jaffe and Manohar, which is based on the canonical definition, and the alternative by Ji, which is based on the Belinfante improved one, have been revisited under light shed by Chen et al. leading to seminal works by Hatta, Wakamatsu, Leader, etc. In chiral physics as exemplified by the chiral vortical effect and applications to the relativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions, s…
This is comment to preprint arXiv:1409.7459 by Y. Tada, Wenxing Nie and M. Oshikawa "Orbital angular momentum and spectral flow in two dimensional chiral superfluids", where the effect of spectral flow along the edge states on the magnitude of the orbital angular momentum is discussed. The general conclusion of the preprint on the essential reduction of the angular momentum for the higher values of chirality, $|ν|>1$, is confirmed. However, we show that if parity is violated, the reduction of the angular momentum takes place also for the $p$-wave superfluids with $|ν|=1$.
One intriguing issue in the nucleon spin decomposition problem is the existence of two types of decompositions, which are representably characterized by two different orbital angular momenta (OAMs) of quarks. The one is the manifestly gauge-invariant mechanical OAM, while the other is the so-called gauge-invariant canonical (g.i.c.) OAM, the concept of which was introduced by Chen et al. To get a deep insight into the difference of these two decompositions, it is therefore vitally important to understand the the physical meanings of the above two OAMs correctly. Also to be clarified is the imp…
