The algebra of observables associated with a quantum field theory is invariant under the connected component of the Lorentz group and under parity reversal, but it is not invariant under time reversal. If we take general covariance seriously as a long-term goal, the algebra of observables should be time-reversal invariant, and any breaking of time-reversal symmetry will have to be described by the state over the algebra. In consequence, the modified algebra of observables is a presentation of a classical continuous random field.
Quantum tunneling is a fundamental quantum mechanical effect involved in plenty of physical phenomena. Its control would impact these phenomena and the technologies based on them. We show that the quantum tunneling probability through a potential barrier can be increased to approach unity in a quantum Zeno dynamics undergone by the tunneling particle in which the direction of the momentum is frequently monitored. We first model the measurements of the momentum direction as selective von Neumann projections, and then as nonselective, direction-sensitive interactions of the particle with probe p…
We study a system of two distant quantum emitters coupled via a one-dimensional waveguide where the electromagnetic field has a direction-dependent velocity. As a consequence, the onset of collective emission is non-simultaneous and, for appropriate parameters, while one of the emitters exhibits superradiance the other can be subradiant. Interference effects enable the system to radiate in a preferential direction depending on the atomic state and the field propagation phases. We characterize such directional emission as a function of various parameters, delineating the conditions for optimal …
The optical beam splitter is a widely-used device in photonics-based quantum information processing. Specifically, linear optical networks demand large numbers of beam splitters for unitary matrix realization. This requirement comes from the beam splitter property that a photon cannot go back out of the input ports, which we call "directionally-biased". Because of this property, higher dimensional information processing tasks suffer from rapid device resource growth when beam splitters are used in a feed-forward manner. Directionally-unbiased linear-optical devices have been introduced recentl…
We study a 2-D disordered time-discrete quantum walk based on 1-D `generalized elephant quantum walk' where an entangling coin operator is assumed and which paves the way to a new set of properties. We show that considering a given disorder in one direction, it is possible to control the degree of spreading and entanglement in the other direction. This observation helps assert that the random quantum walks of this ilk serve as a controllable decoherence channel with the degree of randomness being the tunable parameter and highlight the role of dimensionality in quantum systems regarding inform…
We formalize the treatment of directed (or chiral) quantum walks using Hermitian adjacency matrices, bridging two developing fields of research in quantum information and spectral graph theory. We display results and simulations which highlight the conceptual differences between having directions encoded in the Hamiltonians or not. This leads to a construction of a new type of quantum phenomenon: zero transfer between pairs of sites in a connected coupled network, which is only possible in the directed model we study. Our main result is a description of several families of directed cycles that…
We design machines that learn how to rotate a quantum bit about an initially unknown direction, encoded in the state of a spin-j particle. We show that a machine equipped with a quantum memory of O(log j) qubits can outperform all machines with purely classical memory, even if the size of their memory is arbitrarily large. The advantage is present for every finite j and persists as long as the quantum memory is accessed for no more than O(j) times. We establish these results by deriving the ultimate performance achievable with purely classical memories, thus providing a benchmark that can be u…
We explore ideas for generating sounds and eventually music by using quantum devices in the NISQ era using quantum circuits. In particular, we first consider a concept for a "qeyboard", i.e. a quantum keyboard, where the real-time behaviour of expectation values using a time evolving quantum circuit can be associated to sound features like intensity, frequency and tone. Then, we examine how these properties can be extracted from physical quantum systems, taking the Ising model as an example. This can be realized by measuring physical quantities of the quantum states of the system, e.g. the ene…
Quantum simulation of discrete-time Hamiltonians using directionally unbiased linear optical multiports
最近,提出了标准光学多端口的推广[Phys. Rev. A 93,043845(2016)]。
In recent works we have used quantum tools in the analysis of the time evolution of several macroscopic systems. The main ingredient in our approach is the self-adjoint Hamiltonian $H$ of the system $\Sc$. This Hamiltonian quite often, and in particular for systems with a finite number of degrees of freedom, gives rise to reversible and oscillatory dynamics. Sometimes this is not what physical reasons suggest. We discuss here how to use non self-adjoint Hamiltonians to overcome this difficulty: the time evolution we obtain out of them show a preferable arrow of time, and it is not reversible. …
In quantum mechanics, it is often thought that the spin of an object points in a fixed direction at any point in time. For example, after selecting the z-direction as the axis of quantization, a spin-1/2 object (such as an electron) may either point up or down. The spin can also be a linear combination of these two states, in which case, there is an axis in another direction in which the spin points in that direction. In this article, we focus on the spin-spin-1/2 case and point out that spin may not necessarily point in a fixed direction, a phenomenon that we call twisted spin. We argue that …
Advancing our understanding of non-trivial quantum effects in biomolecular complexes operating in physiological conditions requires the precise characterisation of the non-classicalities that may be present in such systems as well as asserting whether such features are required for robust function. Here we consider an avian-inspired quantum magnetic sensor composed of two radicals with a third "scavenger" radical under the influence of a collisional environment that allows to capture a variety of decoherence processes. We show that basis-independent coherence, in which the initial system-envir…

The fundamental dynamics of quantum particles is neutral with respect to the arrow of time. And yet, our experiments are not: we observe quantum systems evolving from the past to the future, but not the other way round. A fundamental question is whether it is possible to conceive a broader set of operations that probe quantum processes in the backward direction, from the future to the past, or more generally, in a combination of the forward and backward directions. Here we introduce a mathematical framework for these operations, showing that some of them cannot be interpreted as random mixture…

We present an efficient quantum algorithm aiming to find the negative curvature direction for escaping the saddle point, which is the critical subroutine for many second-order non-convex optimization algorithms. We prove that our algorithm could produce the target state corresponding to the negative curvature direction with query complexity O(polylog(d) /ε), where d is the dimension of the optimization function. The quantum negative curvature finding algorithm is exponentially faster than any known classical method which takes time at least O(d /\sqrtε). Moreover, we propose an efficient quant…
Local excitations as carriers of quantum information spread out in the system in ways governed by the underlying interaction and symmetry. Understanding this phenomenon, also called quantum scrambling, is a prerequisite for employing interacting systems for quantum information processing. The character and direction dependence of quantum scrambling can be inferred from the out-of-time-ordered commutators (OTOCs) containing information on correlation buildup and entanglement spreading. Employing OTOC, we study and quantify the directionality of quantum information propagation in oxide-based hel…
We examine a situation in which an information-carrying signal is sent from two sources to a common receiver. The radiation travels through free space in the presence of noise. The information resides in a relationship between the two beams. We inquire into whether itis possible, in principle, that the locations of the transmitters can be concealed from a party who receives the radiation and decodes the information. Direction finding entails making a set of measurements on asignal and constructing an analytic continuation of the time dependent fields from the results. The fact that this proces…
We study both manipulation and detection of two-mode spatial quantum states of light by means of a reconfigurable integrated device built in an electro-optical material in a Kolgelnik-Schmidt configuration, which provides higher error tolerance to fabrication defects and larger integration density than other current schemes. SU(2) transformations are implemented on guided spatial modes in such a way that reconstruction of both the optical field-strength quantum probability distribution, via spatial two-mode homodyne detection, and the full optical field-strength wavefunction, by means of weak …
In nanostructures, the light-matter interaction can be engineered to be chiral. In the fully quantum regime, a chiral one-dimensional atom, a photon propagating in one direction interacts with the atom; a photon propagating in the other direction does not. Chiral quantum optics has applications in creating nanoscopic single-photon routers, circulators, phase-shifters and two-photon gates. Furthermore, the directional photon-exchange between many emitters in a chiral system may enable the creation of highly exotic quantum states. Here, we present a new way of implementing chiral quantum optics …

Heat spontaneously flows from hot to cold in standard thermodynamics. However, the latter theory presupposes the absence of initial correlations between interacting systems. We here experimentally demonstrate the reversal of heat flow for two quantum correlated spins-1/2, initially prepared in local thermal states at different effective temperatures, employing a Nuclear Magnetic Resonance setup. We observe a spontaneous energy flow from the cold to the hot system. This process is enabled by a trade off between correlations and entropy that we quantify with information-theoretical quantities. T…
