[abridged] We describe the results of our multi-wavelength observing campaign on the young stellar objects in the LkH$α$101 cluster. Our simultaneous X-ray and multi-frequency radio observations are unique in providing simultaneous constraints on short-timescale variability at both wavelengths as well as constraints on the thermal or nonthermal nature of radio emission from young stars. Focussing in on radio-emitting objects and the multi-wavelength data obtained for them, we find that multi-frequency radio data indicate nonthermal emission even in objects with infrared evidence for disks. We find radio variability on timescales of decades, days and hours. About half of the objects with X-ray and radio detections were variable at X-ray wavelengths, despite lacking large-scale flares or large variations. Variability appears to be a bigger factor affecting radio emission than X-ray emission. A star with infrared evidence for a disk, [BW88]~3, was observed in the decay phase of a radio flare. In this object and another ([BW88]~1), we find an inverse correlation between radio flux and spectral index which contrasts with behavior seen in the Sun and active stars. We interpret this behavior as the repopulation of the hardest energy electrons due to particle acceleration. A radio and X-ray source lacking an infrared counterpart, [BW88]~1, may be near the substellar limit; its radio properties are similar to other cluster members, but its much higher radio to X-ray luminosity ratio is reminiscent of behavior in nearby very low mass stars/brown dwarfs. We find no correspondence between signatures of particle acceleration and those of plasma heating, both time-averaged and time-variable. The lack of correlated temporal variability in multi-wavelength behavior, the breakdown of multi-wavelength correlations of...
We report here the first evidence for planetesimal infall onto the very young Herbig Be star LkH$_α$234. These results are based on observations acquired over 31 days using spectroscopy of the sodium D lines, the He I 5876Å, and hydrogen H$_α$ lines. We find Redshifted Absorption Components (RAC) with velocities up to 200 km/s and very mild Blueshifted Absorption Components (BEC) up to 100 km/s in the Na I lines. No correlation is observed between the appearance of the Na I RAC & BEC and the H$_α$ and He I line variability, which suggests that these (Na I RAC & BEC) are formed in a process unr…
We have carried out a molecular survey of the Class 0 IM protostar NGC 7129 -- FIRS 2 (hereafter FIRS 2) and the Herbig Be star LkH$α$ 234 with the aim of studying the chemical evolution of the envelopes of intermediate-mass (IM) young stellar objects (YSOs). Both objects have similar luminosities (~500 Lsun) and are located in the same molecular cloud which minimizes the chemical differences due to different stellar masses or initial cloud conditions. Moreover, since they are located at the same distance, we have the same spatial resolution in both objects. A total of 17 molecular species (in…
We present the results of ISO SWS and LWS grating scans towards the three brightest members of the BD+40 4124 group in the infrared: BD+40 4124 (B2Ve), LkHalpha 224 (A7e) and the embedded source LkHalpha 225. Emission from the pure rotational lines of H_2, from ro-vibrational transitions of CO, from PAHs, from H I recombination lines and from the infrared fine structure lines of [Fe II], [Si II], [S I], [O I], [O III] and [C II] was detected. These emission lines arise in the combination of a low-density (approx 10^2 cm^-3) H II region with a clumpy PDR in the case of BD+40 4124. The lower tra…
A star forms when a cloud of dust and gas collapses. It is generally believed that this collapse first produces a flattened rotating disk, through which matter is fed onto the embryonic star at the center of the disk. When the temperature and density at the center of the star pass a critical threshold, thermonuclear fusion begins. The remaining disk, which can still contain up to 0.3 times the mass of the star, is then sculpted and eventually dissipated by the radiation and wind from the newborn star. Unfortunately this picture of the structure and evolution of the disk remains speculative bec…
The Herbig Ae/Be star LkHalpha 101 has been imaged at high angular resolution at a number of wavelengths in the near-infrared (from 1 to 3 microns) using the Keck 1 Telescope, and also observed in the mid-infrared (11.15 microns) using the U.C. Berkeley Infrared Spatial Interferometer (ISI). The resolved circular disk with a central hole or cavity reported in Tuthill et al. (2001) is confirmed. This is consistent with an almost face-on view (inclination < 35 deg) onto a luminous pre- or early-main sequence object surrounded by a massive circumstellar disk. With a multiple-epoch study spanning …
In the infrared, the heavily reddened LkH$α$ 101 is one of the brightest young stars in the sky. Situated just north of the Taurus-Auriga complex in the L1482 dark cloud, it appears to be an early B-type star that has been serendipitously exposed during a rarely observed stage of early evolution, revealing a remarkable spectrum and a directly-imaged circumstellar disk. While detailed studies of this star and its circumstellar environment have become increasingly sophisticated in the 50 years since Herbig (1956) first pointed it out, the true nature of the object still remains a mystery. Recent…
We report the discovery of a spatially-resolved edge-on protoplanetary disk in the ~2-Myr-old MBM 12 young association. Our near-infrared images of LkHa 263C (MBM 12A 3C), obtained with the Hokupa'a adaptive optics system on the Gemini North telescope, clearly show two elongated reflection nebulosities separated by a dark lane, a morphology well-matched by scattered light models of an optically thick (at near-infrared wavelengths) edge-on disk. An optical spectrum of the scattered light nebulosity obtained with the Keck II telescope exhibits a spectral type of M0 +/- 0.5 (T_eff = 3850 +/- 100 …
Progress in understanding the embedded stars in LkHa225 has been hampered by their variability, making it hard to compare data taken at different times, and by the limited resolution of the available data, which cannot probe the small scales between the two stars. In an attempt to overcome these difficulties, we present new near-infrared data on this object taken using the ALFA adaptive optics system with the MPE 3D integral field spectrometer and the near-infrared camera Omega-Cass. The stars themselves have K-band spectra which are dominated by warm dust emission, analagous to class I-II for…
With the Spitzer-IRS we have obtained the first mid-IR spectroscopy of NGC 7129, in the unusually strong outflow and in a ridge of H_2 emission near the Herbig Be star LkHalpha-234. The UV radiation field strength is estimated from PAH band intensities in the H_2 ridge, and from the rotational H_2 emission lines we have deduced aperture average excitation temperatures and column densities in the two regions, finding the H_2 ridge values to be consistent with pumping by UV fluorescence, but also comparable to regions that form H_2 in non-dissociative C-shocks. The H_2 emission in the outflow is…
We present a study of the scaling properties of bipolar outflows, generic to the circumstellar environment of young stellar objects, and which are generally believed to be magnetohydrodynamically driven. Our work consists of a multifractal analysis of near-infrared light scattered by dust grains in the lobes of seven bipolar nebulae, namely GGD 18, V380 Orionis, LkHα101/NGC 1579, LkHα233, PV Cephei, V645 Cygni (GL 2789), and V633 Cassiopeiae (LkHα198). We argue that these objects pertain to a multifractal universality class, with the corresponding universal parameters averaged over the ensembl…
We report detection of continuum emission at 850 and 450 micron from disks around four Classical T Tauri stars in the MBM 12 (L1457) young association. Using a simple model we infer masses of 0.0014-0.012 M_sun for the disk of LkHa 263 ABC, 0.005-0.021 M_sun for S18 ABab, 0.03-0.18 M_sun for LkHa 264 A, and 0.023-0.23 M_sun for LkHa 262. The disk mass found for LkHa 263 ABC is consistent with the 0.0018 M_sun inferred from the scattered light image of the edge-on disk around component C. Comparison to earlier 13CO line observations indicates CO depletion by up to a factor 300 with respect to d…
We present new high and low resolution spectroscopic and photometric data of nine members of the young association CMa R1. All the stars have circumstellar dust at some distance as could be expected from their association with reflection nebulosity. Four stars (HD 52721, HD 53367, LkHalpha 220 and LkHalpha 218) show Halpha emission and we argue that they are Herbig Be stars with discs. Our photometric and spectroscopic observations on these stars reveal new characteristics of their variability. We present first interpretations of the variability of HD 52721, HD 53367 and the two LkHalpha stars…
We review the properties of the very young (2 Myr) open cluster NGC6383. The cluster is dominated by the massive binary HD159176 (O7V + O7V). The distance to NGC6383 is consistently found to be 1.3 +- 0.1 kpc and the average reddening is determined to be E(B-V) = 0.32 +- 0.02. Several pre-main sequence candidates have been identified using different criteria relying on the detection of emission lines, infrared excesses, photometric variability and X-ray emission.
An overview is given of multiwavelength observations of young supernova remnants, with a focus on the observational signatures of efficient cosmic ray acceleration. Some of the effects that may be attributed to efficient cosmic ray acceleration are the radial magnetic fields in young supernova remnants, magnetic field amplification as determined with X-ray imaging spectroscopy, evidence for large post-shock compression factors, and low plasma temperatures, as measured with high resolution optical/UV/X-ray spectroscopy. Special emphasis is given to spectroscopy of post-shock plasma's, which off…
We present high-resolution observations made with the Very Large Array (VLA) in its A configuration at frequencies between 5 and 43 GHz of a sample of five massive young stellar objects (YSOs): LkHa101, NGC2024-IRS2, S106-IR, W75N and S140-IRS1. The resolution varied from 0.04 arcsec (at 43 GHz) to 0.5 arcsec (at 5 GHz), corresponding to a linear resolution as high as 17 AU for our nearest source. A MERLIN observation of S106-IR at 23 GHz with 0.03-arcsec resolution is also presented. S106-IR and S140-IRS1 are elongated at 43 GHz perpendicular to their large scale bipolar outflows. This confir…
The recent identification of several groups of young stars within 100 parsecs of the Sun has generated widespread interest. Given their proximity and possible age differences, these systems are ideally suited for detailed studies of star and planet formation. Here we report on the first investigation of protoplanetary disks in one such group, the high-latitude cloud MBM 12 at a distance of $\sim$65 pc. We present mid-infrared observations of the eight candidate pre-main-sequence (PMS) members and the two main-sequence (MS) stars in the same line-of-sight which may or may not be associated with…
We report findings from the first set of data in a current survey to establish conclusively whether jets from young stars rotate. We observed the bi-polar jets from the T Tauri stars TH28 and RW Aur, and the blue-shifted jet from T Tauri star LkH$α$321, using the Hubble Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (HST/STIS). Forbidden emission lines (FELs) show distinct and systematic velocity asymmetries of 10 -- 25 (+/- 5) km/s at a distance of 0".3 from the source, representing a (projected) distance of ~ 40 AU along the jet in the case of RW Aur, ~ 50 AU for TH28, and 165 AU in the case of LkH$α$…
LkHA312 has been observed serendipitously with the ACIS-I detector on board Chandra with 26h continuous exposure. This H_alpha emission line star belongs to the star-forming region M78 (NGC2068). From the optical and NIR data, we show that it is a pre-main sequence (PMS) low-mass star with a weak NIR excess. This genuine T Tauri star displayed an X-ray flare with an unusual long rise phase (~8h). The X-ray emission was nearly constant during the first 18h of the observation, and then increased by a factor of 13 during a fast rise phase (~2h), and reached a factor of 16 above the quiescent X-ra…
We present X-ray, radio, and infrared observations of the 68 ms pulsar PSR J1420-6048 and its surrounding nebula, a possible counterpart of the gamma-ray source GeV J1417-6100/3EG J1420-6038. Pulsed X-ray emission at the radio period is marginally detected by ASCA from a source embedded in the hard spectrum X-ray nebula AX J1420.1-6049. At radio wavelengths, the pulsar is found to be strongly linearly and circularly polarized, and the polarization sweep is measured. A comparison of high resolution ATCA radio imaging of the Kookaburra's upper wing (G313.6+0.3), which contains the pulsar and the…
We combine existing multiwavelength data (incl. an HST/GHRS UV spectrum, an optical spectrum, far-IR, Xray and radio fluxes) with new HST/WFPC2 images, near-IR photometry and K band spectroscopy. We use these data to constrain the young, the intermediate age and the old stellar populations in the central 330 pc of the starburst galaxy NGC 7714. [...] We find that the young burst responsible for the UV light is only a small part of an extended episode of enhanced star formation (SF) [...]. The mass of young and intermediate age stars thus formed equals at least 10% of the mass locked in pre-exi…
We present a multiwavelength analysis of the young open cluster NGC 2362. UBVRcIc CCD photometric observations, together with available data in the Chandra data base, near infrared data from the Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS), and recently published Halpha spectroscopy were used to get information about the evolutionary stage of the cluster and the main physical properties of its stellar content. Cluster membership is estimated for every individual star by means of ZAMS and isochrone fitting. The cluster is confirmed to host a richly populated pre-main sequence (PMS), and to contain a large…
We present observations of 1.2-mm dust continuum emission, made with the Swedish ESO Submillimeter Telescope, towards eighteen luminous IRAS point sources, all with colors typical of compact HII regions and associated with CS(2-1) emission, thought to be representative of young massive star forming regions. Emission was detected toward all the IRAS objects. We find that the 1.2-mm sources associated with them have distinct physical parameters, namely sizes of 0.4 pc, dust temperatures of 30 K, masses of 2x10^3 Msun, column densities of 3x10^23 cm^-2, and densities of 4x10^5 cm^-3. We refer to …
In this contribution I show the physical limitations to the application of standard synthesis models from 0 to 10 Gyr. I also present the multiwavelength spectrum (from gamma-rays to radio) of young star forming regions based on evolutionary population synthesis models that takes into account the stochasticity of the star formation proces. I show how the correlation of different observables can allow to establish a better understanding of the star formation processes. Finally I compare the spectral energy distribution of AGNs and star forming regions and I show the possible connection of Star …
The spectral and reddening properties of 211 highly reddened proper motion members with $V < 15$ mag in 6 young galactic star clusters are investigated using low resolution spectroscopic, broad-band $UBVRIJHK$ and mid-IR data. We report emission features in CaII HK and HI lines for a sample of 29 stars including 11 stars reported for the first time and also provide either a new or more reliable spectral class for a sample of 24 stars. CaII triplet width measurements are used to indicate the presence of an accretion disk for a dozen stars and to hint luminosity for a couple of stars. On the bas…
We present B- and R-band imaging and photometry, H-alpha narrow-band imaging, NIR H-band imaging, and HI 21-cm spectroscopy of the nearby Sd spiral galaxy UGC7321. UGC7321 exhibits a remarkably thin stellar disk with no bulge component. The galaxy has a very diffuse, low surface brightness disk, which appears to suffer little internal extinction in spite of its edge-on geometry. The UGC7321 disk shows significant B-R color gradients in both the radial and vertical directions. These color gradients cannot be explained solely by dust and are indicative of changes in the mix of stellar ages and/o…
[abridged] We investigate the nature of the luminous X-ray source population detected in a (72 ks) Chandra ACIS-S observation of NGC 4038/39, the Antennae galaxies. We derive the average X-ray spectral properties of sources in different luminosity ranges, and we correlate the X-ray positions with radio, IR, and optical HST data. The X-ray sources are predominantly associated with young stellar clusters, indicating that they belong to the young stellar population. Based on both their co-added X-ray spectrum, and on the lack of associated radio emission, we conclude that the Ultra Luminous X-ray…
New infrared and millimeter observations from Keck, Palomar, ISO, and OVRO and archival data from the NRAO VLA and IRAS are presented for the low metallicity blue compact dwarf galaxy SBS 0335-052. Mid-infrared imaging shows this young star-forming system is compact (0.31"; 80 pc) at 12.5 microns. The large Br-gamma equivalent width (235 Angstroms) measured from integral field spectroscopy is indicative of a ~5 Myr starburst. The central source appears to be optically thin in emission, containing both a warm (~80 K) and a hot (~210 K) dust component, and the overall interstellar radiation fiel…
We used multiwavelength data (HI, FUV, NUV, R) to search for evidence of star formation in the intragroup medium of the Hickson Compact Group 100. We find that young star-forming regions are located in the intergalactic HI clouds of the compact group which extend to over 130 kpc away from the main galaxies. A tidal dwarf galaxy candidate is located in the densest region of the HI tail, 61 kpc from the brightest group member and its age is estimated to be only 3.3 Myr. Fifteen other intragroup HII regions and TDG candidates are detected in the GALEX FUV image and within a field 10'x10' encompas…
SS433 is an X-ray binary emitting persistent relativistic double sided jets that expand into the surrounding W50 radio nebula. The SS433/W50 system is then an excellent laboratory for studying relativistic jet interaction with the surrounding interstellar medium. In this context, part of W50 nebula has been mapped with ISOCAM at 15 micron, where the large scale X-ray jets are observed. I will show the results, particularly on the W50 western lobe, on two emitting regions detected in IR with IRAS, and observed in millimeter wavelength (CO(1-0) transition). It is uncertain whether these regions …
In recent years deep X-ray and infrared surveys have provided an efficient way to find accreting supermassive black holes, otherwise known as active galactic nuclei (AGN), in the young universe. Such surveys can, unlike optical surveys, find AGN obscured by high column densities of gas and dust. In those cases, deep optical data show only the host galaxy, which can then be studied in greater detail than in unobscured AGN. Some years ago the hard spectrum of the X-ray "background" suggested that most AGN were obscured. Now GOODS, MUSYC, COSMOS and other surveys have confirmed this picture and g…
We present the UV spectroscopy and timing of three nearby pulsars (Vela, B0656+14 and Geminga) recently observed with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph. We also review the optical and X-ray properties of these pulsars and establish their connection with the UV properties. We show that the multiwavelengths properties of neutron stars (NSs) vary significantly within the sample of middle-aged pulsars. Even larger differences are found between the thermal components of Ge-minga and B0656+14 as compared to those of radio-quiet isolated NSs. These differences could be attributed to different …
We present B and R-band luminosity functions (LF) for a sample of 25 nearby groups of galaxies. We find that the LFs of the groups with low X-ray luminosity (L_X < 10^{41.7} erg/s) are significantly different from those of the X-ray brighter groups, showing a prominent dip around M_b = -18. While both categories show lack of late-type galaxies in their central regions, X-ray dim groups also show a more marked concentration of optical luminosity towards the centre. A toy simulation shows that in the low velocity dispersion environment, as in the X-ray dim group, dynamical friction would facilit…
We combine Spitzer IRAC mid-infrared (MIR) and Chandra X-ray observations of the dominant galaxies NGC6872 and NGC6876 in the Pavo group with archival optical and HI data to study interaction-induced star formation. In spiral galaxy NGC6872, 8.0 and 5.8 micron nonstellar emission having colors consistent with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) is concentrated in clumps in three regions: in a 5 kpc radius outer ring about the center of the spiral galaxy, in a bridge of emission connecting NGC6872's northern spiral arm to IC4970, and along the full extent of NGC6872's tidal arms. PAH emissi…
We have studied the physical conditions in the central 300 pc of the proto-typical starburst galaxy NGC 7714. Our analysis is based on ultraviolet spectroscopy with the HST+GHRS and ground-based optical observations. The data are interpreted using evolutionary models optimized for young starburst regions. The massive stellar population is derived in a self-consistent way using the continuum and stellar absorption lines in the ultraviolet and the nebular emission line optical spectrum. The central starburst has an age of about 4.5 Myr, with little evidence for an age spread. Wolf-Rayet features …
We report the analysis of deep radio observations of the interacting galaxy system M51 from the Very Large Array, with the goal of understanding the nature of the population of compact radio sources in nearby spiral galaxies. We detect 107 compact radio sources, 64% of which have optical counterparts in a deep H$α$ Hubble Space Telescope image. Thirteen of the radio sources have X-ray counterparts from a {\em Chandra} observation of M51. We find that six of the associated H$α$ sources are young supernova remnants with resolved shells. Most of the SNRs exhibit steep radio continuum spectral ind…
We completed a search for circumstellar disks around Herbig Be stars using the NRAO Very Large Array (VLA) and the IRAM Plateau de Bure (PdB) interferometers. We present our new VLA and PdBI data for the three objects MWC 297, Z CMa, and LKHa 215. We constructed the SED from near-IR to centimeter wavelengths by adding our millimeter and centimeter data to the available data at other wavelengths, mainly Spitzer images. The entire SED was fitted using a disk+envelope model. In addition, we compiled all the disk millimeter observations in the literature and completed a statistical analysis of all…
Here we present new optical data from the Hubble Space Telescope of the NGC 253 central region, which reveal numerous discrete sources in a ring--like structure. This is combined with data at infrared, millimeter, radio and X-ray wavelengths to examine the nature of these discrete sources and the nucleus itself. We find that the majority of optical/IR/mm sources are young star clusters which trace out a ~50 pc ring, that defines the inner edge of a cold gas torus. This reservoir of cold gas has probably been created by gas inflow from a larger scale bar and deposited at the inner Lindblad reso…
The observational properties of globular cluster systems (GCSs) are vital tools to investigate the violent star formation histories of their host galaxies. This violence is thought to have been triggered by galaxy interactions or mergers. The most basic properties of a GCS are its luminosity function (number of clusters per luminosity bin) and color distributions. A large number of observed GCS show bimodal color distributions, which can be translated into a bimodality in either metallicity and/or age. An additional uncertainty comes into play when one considers extinction. These effects can b…
We present a multiwavelength study of the massive star forming region associated with IRAS 06055+2039 which reveals an interesting scenario of this complex where regions are at different stages of evolution of star formation. Narrow band near-infrared (NIR) observations were carried out with UKIRT-UFTI in molecular hydrogen and Br$γ$ lines to trace the shocked and ionized gases respectively. We have used 2MASS $J H K_{s}$ data to study the nature of the embedded cluster associated with IRAS 06055+2039. We obtain a power-law slope of 0.43$\pm$0.09 for the $K_{s}$-band Luminosity Function (KLF) …
We have combined multi-wavelength observations of a selected sample of starforming galaxies with galaxy evolution models in order to compare the results obtained for different SFR tracers and to study the effect that the evolution of the starforming regions has on them. We also aimed at obtaining a better understanding of the corrections due to extinction and nuclear activity on the derivation of the SFR. We selected the sample from Chandra data for the well studied region Chandra Deep Field South (CDFS) and chose the objects that also have UV and IR data from GALEX and GOODS-Spitzer respectiv…
We present arcsecond resolution mid-infrared (8--13 $μ$m) images and photometry of four young stellar objects (YSOs)~--- L1551-IRS5, HL~Tau, AS~205, and AS~209 (V1121~Oph)~--- taken with the Berkeley Mid-Infrared Camera. For AS~205, a known T Tauri binary, we also present near-infrared JHK images and HKL$^{\prime}$ speckle imaging data. All three single stars are unresolved in our mid-IR images. Our data is the first to resolve in the mid-IR both components of the close binary AS~205 (projected separation $\sim$1.3$^{\prime \prime}$ (210~A.U.)). AS~205~North is the IR brighter star in our data…
Aims. We use different tracers, such as Ha, ultraviolet (UV), and infrared (IR) emissions at various wavelengths, to study the dust and star-formation (SF) conditions throughout the disk of M33. Methods. We derive the radial distribution of dust, of the old and young stellar population using Spitzer and GALEX data, complemented by ground-based optical data and available surveys of atomic and molecular gas. We separate the contribution of discrete sources to the IR brightness from the diffuse emission. Results. At 8 and 24 um, discrete sources account for 40% of the IR emission in the innermost…
We present new Spitzer photometry of the Eagle Nebula (M16, containing the optical cluster NGC 6611) combined with near-infrared photometry from 2MASS. We use dust radiative transfer models, mid-infrared and near-infrared color-color analysis, and mid-infrared spectral indices to analyze point source spectral energy distributions, select candidate young stellar objects (YSOs), and constrain their mass and evolutionary state. Comparison of the different protostellar selection methods shows that mid-infrared methods are consistent, but as has been known for some time, near-infrared-only analysis…
Recent observations have detected a number of young pulsars from the power peak in the gamma-ray band to the incoherent photon peak in the optical/IR. We have made progress on the multiwavelength phenomenology of pulsar emission and beaming, but a wide variation of light curves between different objects and different energy bands makes the full story complex. I sketch here a `Unified Model' of pulsar beaming and summarize the radiation mechanisms and their interplay in outer magnetosphere models of pulsar high energy emission.
We present a multiwavelength study of the central part of the Carina Nebula, including Trumpler 16 and part of Trumpler 14. Analysis of the Chandra X-ray Observatory archival data led to the identification of nearly 450 X-ray sources. These were then cross-identified with optical photometric and spectroscopic information available from literature, and with deep near-infrared (JHKs) imaging observations. A total of 38 known OB stars are found to be X-ray emitters. All the O stars and early B stars show the nominal relation between the X-ray and bolometric luminosities, Lx ~ 10^{-7} Lbol. A few …
We present new observations of the nebular remnant of the old nova GK Persei 1901, in the optical using the 2m HCT and at low radio frequencies using the GMRT. The evolution of the nova remnant indicates shock interaction with the ambient medium, especially in the southwest quadrant. Application of a simple model for the shock and its evolution to determine the time dependence of the radius of the shell in the southwest quadrant indicates that the shell is now expanding into an ambient medium that has a lower density compared to the density of the ambient medium ahead of the shock in 1987.Ther…
This paper presents optical UBVRI broadband photo-polarimetry of the EXPORT sample obtained at the 2.5m Nordic Optical Telescope. The database consists of multi-epoch photo-polarimetry of 68 pre-main-sequence and main-sequence stars. An investigation of the polarization variability indicates that 22 objects are variable at the 3sigma level in our data. All these objects are pre-main sequence stars, consisting of both T Tauri and Herbig Ae/Be objects while the main sequence, Vega type and post-T Tauri type objects are not variable. The polarization properties of the variable sources are mostly …
We present new multiwavelength submillimeter continuum measurements of the circumstellar dust around 48 young stars in the $ρ$ Ophiuchus dark clouds. Supplemented with previous 1.3 mm observations of an additional 99 objects from the literature, the statistical distributions of disk masses and submillimeter colors are calculated and compared to those in the Taurus-Auriga region. These basic submillimeter properties of young stellar objects in both environments are shown to be essentially identical. As with their Taurus counterparts, the $ρ$ Oph circumstellar dust properties are shown to evolve…
Context. LS 5039 is one of the few TeV emitting X-ray binaries detected so far. The powering source of its multiwavelength emission can be accretion in a microquasar scenario or wind interaction in a young nonaccreting pulsar scenario. Aims. To present new high-resolution radio images and compare them with the expected behavior in the different scenarios. Methods. We analyze Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) radio observations that provide morphological and astrometric information at milliarcsecond scales. Results. We detect a changing morphology between two images obtained five days apart. In b…
Ultraviolet Luminous Galaxies (UVLGs) have been identified as intensely star-forming, nearby galaxies. A subset of these, the supercompact UVLGs, are believed to be local analogs of high redshift Lyman Break Galaxies. Here we investigate the radio continuum properties of this important population for the first time. We have observed 42 supercompact UVLGs with the VLA, all of which have extensive coverage in the UV/optical by GALEX and SDSS. Our analysis includes comparison samples of multiwavelength data from the Spitzer First Look Survey and from the SDSS-Galex matched catalogs. In addition w…
We present a sensitive, multiwavelength submillimeter continuum survey of 153 young stellar objects in the Taurus-Auriga star formation region. The submillimeter detection rate is 61% to a completeness limit of ~10 mJy (3-sigma) at 850 microns. The inferred circumstellar disk masses are log-normally distributed with a mean mass of ~0.005 solar masses and a large dispersion (0.5 dex). Roughly one third of the submillimeter sources have disk masses larger than the minimal nebula from which the solar system formed. The median disk to star mass ratio is 0.5%. The empirical behavior of the submilli…
We present radio through X-ray results of a bright (10^{40} erg/s in the 0.5 to 8.0 keV band) ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX), CXOU J153434.9+151149, in the starburst, interacting pair of galaxies NGC 5953/5954. Chandra image of this ULX shows that it is elongated. From HST/WFPC2/F606W data we have detected a counterpart of the ULX system with M_{F606W} ~-7.1 \pm 0.7 mag. This optical counterpart may be either an O-type supergiant star or a young star cluster. From our Fabry-Perot interferometric observations, we have detected Halpha and [NII](6584 A) diffuse emission, with velocity gradients…
