The recent suggestion that late time quantum dynamics may be important for resolving cosmological issues associated with our observed universe requires a consideration of several subtle issues associated with quantum cosmology, as we describe here. The resolution of these issues will be important if we are to be able to properly ascribe probability measures associated with eternal inflation, and a string landscape.
Comments on the paper "Late Time Behavior of false Vacuum Decay: Possible Implications for Cosmology and Metastable Inflating States" [arXiv:0711.1821] by L. M. Krauss and J. Dent are presented and the possible behavior of the unstable false vacuum at very late times, where deviations from the exponential decay law become to be dominant is analyzed.
Short review of riddles that lie at the intersection of quantum theory, particle physics and cosmology; dark energy as false vacuum; discussion of a possible detection experiment.
Properties of unstable false vacuum states are analyzed from the point of view of the quantum theory of unstable states. Some of false vacuum states survive up to times when their survival probability has a non-exponential form. At times much latter than the transition time, when contributions to the survival probability of its exponential and non-exponential parts are comparable, the survival probability as a function of time t has an inverse power-like form. We show that at this time region the instantaneous energy of the false vacuum states tends to the energy of the true vacuum state as $1…
We consider the effects of a two-form field on the late-time dynamics of brane gas cosmologies. Assuming thermal equilibrium of winding states, we find that the presence of a form field allows a late stage of expansion of the Universe even when the winding degrees of freedom decay into a pressureless gas of string loops. Finally, we suggest to understand the dimensionality of the Universe not as a result of the thermal equilibrium condition but rather as a consequence of the symmetries of the geometry.
In the inflationary cosmology it occurs frequently that the inflaton field is trapped in a local, transient minimum with non-zero vacuum energy. The difficulty regarding the curvature perturbation produced during such a stage is that classically the inflaton does not move so that the comoving hypersurfaces are not well defined at linear order in the scalar field perturbation. In this paper, assuming a mechanism of trapping which resembles a high temperature correction to the potential, we explicitly calculate for the first time the resulting power spectrum of the curvature perturbation by eval…
We apply the principles of quantum mechanics and quantum cosmology to predict probabilities for our local observations of a universe undergoing false vacuum eternal inflation. At a sufficiently fine-grained level, histories of the universe describe a mosaic of bubble universes separated by inflationary regions. We show that predictions for local observations can be obtained directly from sets of much coarser grained histories which only follow a single bubble. These coarse-grained histories contain neither information about our unobservable location nor about the unobservable large-scale struc…
We study inflationary cosmology and the late-time accelerated expansion of the universe in non-minimal Yang-Mills (YM) theory, in which the YM field couples to a function of the scalar curvature. It is shown that power-law inflation can be realized due to the non-minimal YM field-gravitational coupling which maybe caused by quantum corrections. Moreover, it is demonstrated that both inflation and the late-time accelerated expansion of the universe can be realized in a modified YM-$F(R)$ gravity which is consistent with solar system tests. Furthermore, it is shown that this result can be realiz…
The Friedmann equations for a brane with induced gravity are analyzed and compared with the standard general relativity and Randall-Sundrum cases. Randall-Sundrum gravity modified the early universe dynamics, whereas induced gravity changes the late universe evolution. The early and late time limits are investigated. Induced gravity effects can contribute to late-universe acceleration. This conditions for this are found. Qualitative analysis is given for a range of scalar field potentials.
Brane gas cosmology is a scenario inspired by string theory which proposes a simple resolution to the initial singularity problem and gives a dynamical explanation for the number of spatial dimensions of our universe. In this work we have studied analytically and numerically the late-time behaviour of these type of cosmologies taking a proper care of the annihilation of winding modes. This has help us to clarify and extend several aspects of their dynamics. We have found that the decay of winding states into non-winding states behaving like a gas of ordinary non-relativistic particles preclude…
The interface between a big bubble of true AdS$_D$ vacuum expanding inside a false AdS$_D$ vacuum is a model of an inflating $D-1$ dimensional universe. It looks like an interesting setup to study fundamentals of inflation. A recent computation shows that the prediction of this model for the wavefunction of the universe disagrees with that of Hartle and Hawking. We show that this discrepancy is because the effective $D-1$ dimensional description of the model is spin-$0$ (Nordström) gravity rather than spin-2 (Einstein) gravity.
Recent developments in string compactifications demonstrate obstructions to the simplest constructions of low energy cosmologies with positive vacuum energy. The existence of obstacles to creating scale-separated de Sitter solutions indicates a UV/IR puzzle for embedding cosmological vacua in a unitary theory of quantum gravity. Motivated by this puzzle, we propose an embedding of positive energy Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker cosmology within string theory. Our proposal involves confining 4D gravity on a brane which mediates the decay from a non-supersymmetric false AdS5 vacuum to a true…
We present a model of dark energy based on the string effective action, and on the assumption that the dilaton is strongly coupled to dark matter. We discuss the main differences between this class of models and more conventional models of quintessence, uncoupled to dark matter. This paper is based on talks presented at the "VII Congresso Nazionale di Cosmologia" (Osservatorio Astronomico di Roma, Monte Porzio Catone, November 2002), and at the Meeting "Dark Energy Day" (University of Milano-Bicocca, November 2002). To appear in the Proc. of the International Conference on ``Thinking, Observing…
Quantum fluctuations endow spacetime with a foamy texture. The degree of foaminess is dictated by blackhole physics to be of the holographic type. Applied to cosmology, the holographic foam model predicts the existence of dark energy with critical energy density in the current (late) universe, the quanta of which obey infinite statistics. Furthermore we use the deep similarities between turbulence and the spacetime foam phase of strong quantum gravity to argue that the early universe was in a turbulent regime when it underwent a brief cosmic inflation with a "graceful" transition to a laminar …
We consider late-time cosmology in a (phantom) scalar-tensor theory with an exponential potential, as a dark energy model with equation of state parameter close to -1 (a bit above or below this value). Scalar (and also other kinds of) matter can be easily taken into account. An exact spatially-flat FRW cosmology is constructed for such theory, which admits (eternal or transient) acceleration phases for the current universe, in correspondence with observational results. Some remarks on the possible origin of the phantom, starting from a more fundamental theory, are also made. It is shown that q…
In this paper, we analyze the viability of a vacuum Gauss-Bonnet cosmology by examining the dynamics of the homogeneous and anisotropic background in 4+1 dimensions. The trajectories of the system either originate from the standard singularity or from non-standard type, the later is characterized by the divergence of time derivative of the Hubble parameters for its finite value. At the onset, the system should relax to Einstein phase at late times as the effect of Gauss-Bonnet term becomes negligible in the low energy regime. However, we find that most of the trajectories emerging from the sta…
We perform fits of unconventional dark energy models to the available data from high-redshift supernovae, distant galaxies and baryon oscillations. The models are based either on brane cosmologies or on Liouville strings in which a relaxation dark energy is provided by a rolling dilaton field (Q-cosmology). An interesting feature of such cosmologies is the possibility of effective four-dimensional negative-energy dust and/or exotic scaling of dark matter. An important constraint that can discriminate among models is the evolution of the Hubble parameter as a function of the redshift, H(z). We …
Holography is expected as one of the promising descriptions of quantum general relativity. We present a model for a cosmological system involving two holographic screens and find that their equilibrium exactly yields a standard Friedmann-Robertson-Walker universe. We discuss its cosmological implications by taking into account higher order quantum corrections and quantum nature of horizon evaporation. We will show that this model could give rise to a holographic inflation at high energy scales and realize a late-time acceleration in a unified approach. We test our model from the SN Ia observat…
Dark energy models can be seen as dynamical systems. In this paper we show that multi-field models with a curved field space give rise to new critical points and we analyse their stability. These are new accelerating solutions in late-time cosmology which exist even for steep potentials. This opens up the possibility to realise quintessence models even when quantum corrections spoil the flatness of the underlying potential. These non-linear sigma models arise naturally in supergravity and string models where their multi-field dynamics can help to avoid swampland bounds.
We study the effects of a fixed de Sitter geometry background in scenarios of false vacuum decay. It is currently understood that bubble nucleation processes associated with first order phase transitions are particularly important in cosmology. The geometry of spacetime complicates the interpretation of the decay rate of a metastable vacuum. However, the effects of curvature can still be studied in the particular case where backreaction is neglected. We compute the imaginary part of the action in de Sitter space, including the one-loop and the gradient corrections. We use two independent metho…
In this work we have investigated the possibility of having a late time accelerated phase of the universe, suggested by recent supernova observation, in the context of Brans Dicke (BD) theory with a symmetry breaking potential and a matter field. We find that a perfect fluid matter field (pressureless and with pressure) cannot support this acceleration but a fluid with dissipative pressure can drive this late time acceleration. We have also calculated some cosmological parameters in our model to match with observations.
We propose a new four-parameter entropy function that generalizes the Tsallis, Rényi, Barrow, Sharma-Mittal, Kaniadakis and Loop Quantum Gravity entropies for suitable limits of the parameters. Consequently, we address the early and late universe cosmology corresponding to the proposed four-parameter entropy function. As a result, it turns out that the entropic cosmology from the generalized entropy function can unify the early inflation to the late dark energy era of the universe. In such a unified scenario, we find that -- (1) the inflation era is described by a quasi de-Sitter evolution of …
We review cosmology in non-minimal Yang-Mills/Maxwell theory, in which the Yang-Mills/electromagnetic field couples to a function of the scalar curvature. We show that power-law inflation can be realized due to the non-minimal gravitational coupling of the Yang-Mills field which may be caused by quantum corrections. Moreover, we study non-minimal vector model in the framework of modified gravity and demonstrate that both inflation and the late-time accelerated expansion of the universe can be realized. We also discuss the cosmological reconstruction of the Yang-Mills theory. Furthermore, we in…
The effects of phase space deformations on Kalutza-Klein cosmology are studied. The deformation is introduced by modifying the symplectic structure of the minisuperspace variables. In the deformed model, we find an accelerating scale factor and therefore infer the existence of an effective cosmological constant from the phase space deformation parameter $β$.
The Gauss-Bonnet (GB) curvature invariant coupled to a scalar field $ϕ$ can lead to an exit from a scaling matter-dominated epoch to a late-time accelerated expansion, which is attractive to alleviate the coincident problem of dark energy. We derive the condition for the existence of cosmological scaling solutions in the presence of the GB coupling for a general scalar-field Lagrangian density $p(ϕ, X)$, where $X=-(1/2)(\nabla ϕ)^2$ is a kinematic term of the scalar field. The GB coupling and the Lagrangian density are restricted to be in the form $f(ϕ) \propto e^{λϕ}$ and $p=Xg (Xe^{λϕ})$, re…
$f(R)$ modifications of Einstein's gravity is an interesting possibility to explain the late time acceleration of the Universe. In this work we explore the cosmological viability of one such $f(R)$ modification proposed in (Kruglov:2013). We show that the model violates fifth-force constraints. The model is also plagued with the issue of curvature singularity in a spherically collapsing object, where the effective scalar field reaches to the point of diverging scalar curvature.
In order to investigate more features of the Brans-Dicke cosmology in the five-dimensional space-time, we explore the solutions of its dynamiacal systems. A behavior of the universe in its early and late time by means of the scale factor is considered. As a results, we show that it is possible to avoid the big rip singularity and to cross the phantom divide line. Furthermore, we review the dark energy component of the universe and its agreement with the observation data for this 3-brane Brans Dicke cosmology by means of the cosmological parameters.
We consider non-minimally coupled (with gravity) scalar field with non-canonical kinetic energy. The form of the kinetic term is of Dirac-Born-Infeld (DBI) form.We study the early evolution of the universe when it is sourced only by the k-field, as well as late time evolution when both the matter and k-field are present. For the k-field, we have considered constant potential as well as potential inspired from Boundary String Field Theory (B-SFT). We show that it is possible to have inflationary solution in early time as well as late time accelerating phase. The solutions also exhibit attractor…
In this paper we find the cosmological solutions of the massive conformal gravity field equations in the presence of matter fields. In particular, we show that the solution of negative curvature is in good agreement with the late universe.
From a hydrodynamicist's point of view the inclusion of viscosity concepts in the macroscopic theory of the cosmic fluid would appear most natural, as an ideal fluid is after all an abstraction (excluding special cases such as superconductivity). Making use of modern observational results for the Hubble parameter plus standard Friedmann formalism, we may extrapolate the description of the universe back in time up to the inflationary era, or we may go to the opposite extreme and analyze the probable ultimate fate of the universe. In this review we discuss a variety of topics in cosmology when i…
The cosmological constant, i.e., the energy density stored in the true vacuum state of all existing fields in the Universe, is the simplest and the most natural possibility to describe the current cosmic acceleration. However, despite its observational successes, such a possibility exacerbates the well known cosmological constant problem, requiring a natural explanation for its small, but nonzero, value. In this paper we study cosmological consequences of a scenario driven by a varying cosmological term, in which the vacuum energy density decays linearly with the Hubble parameter. We test the …
We discuss the cosmological implications of the string swampland conjectures for late-time cosmology, and test them against a wide range of state of the art cosmological observations. The refined de Sitter conjecture constrains either the minimal slope or the curvature of the scalar potential, and depends on two dimensionless constants. For constants of size one or larger, tension exists between observations, especially the Hubble constant, and the slope and curvature conjectures at a level of 4.5 sigma and 2.3 sigma, respectively. Smaller values of the constants are permitted by observations,…
By making use of a class of steep exponential type of potentials, which has been recently used to describe quintessential inflation, we show how a unified picture for both inflation, dark energy and dark matter can emerge entirely through dissipative effects. Dissipation provides a way for extending the applicability of a larger class of these potentials in the sense of leading to a consistent early Universe inflationary picture and producing observables in agreement with the Planck legacy data. Likewise, dissipative effects lead to dark matter production with consistent abundances and, toward…
We examine in the context of general relativity the dynamics of a spatially flat Robertson-Walker universe filled with a classical minimally coupled scalar field ϕof exponential potential ~ e^{-μϕ} plus pressureless baryonic matter. This system is reduced to a first-order ordinary differential equation, providing direct evidence on the acceleration/deceleration properties of the system. As a consequence, for positive potentials, passage into acceleration not at late times is generically a feature of the system, even when the late-times attractors are decelerating. Furthermore, the structure fo…
A late epoch cosmic acceleration may be naturally entangled with cosmic coincidence -- the observation that at the onset of acceleration the vacuum energy density fraction nearly coincides with the matter density fraction. In this Letter we show that this is indeed the case with the cosmology of a Friedmann-Lamaître-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) 3-brane in a five-dimensional anti-de Sitter spacetime. We derive the four-dimensional effective action on a FLRW 3-brane, which helps define a general reduction formula, namely, $M_P^{2}=ρ_{b}/|Λ_5|$, where $M_{P}$ is the effective Planck mass, $Λ_5$ is the…
The effects of noncommutativity on the phase space of a dilatonic cosmological model is investigated. The existence of such noncommutativity results in a deformed Poisson algebra between the minisuperspace variables and their momenta conjugate. For an exponential dilaton potential, the exact solutions in the commutative and noncommutative cases, are presented and compared. We use these solutions to address the late time acceleration issue of cosmic evolution.
We investigate chaotic inflation models with two scalar fields, such that one field (the inflaton) rolls while the other is trapped in a false vacuum state. The false vacuum becomes unstable when the inflaton field falls below some critical value, and a first or second order transition to the true vacuum ensues. Particular attention is paid to Linde's second-order `Hybrid Inflation'; with the false vacuum dominating, inflation differs from the usual true vacuum case both in its cosmology and in its relation to particle physics. The spectral index of the adiabatic density perturbation can be ve…
We consider cosmological scenarios in which density perturbations are generated by the quantum fluctuations of the inflaton field at early times; the late time dynamics involves a modulus which first dominates the energy density of the universe and then decays to reheat the visible sector. By examining the evolution of energy density of the universe from the time of horizon exit of a pivot mode to the present day, and the fact that a modulus field decays via Planck suppressed interactions, we arrive at a relation which relates the mass of the modulus, inflationary observables/parameters and br…
The development of dark energy models has stimulated interest to cosmological singularities, which differ from the traditional Big Bang and Big Crunch singularities. We review a broad class of phenomena connected with soft cosmological singularities in classical and quantum cosmology. We discuss the classification of singularities from the geometrical point of view and from the point of view of the behaviour of finite size objects, crossing such singularities. We discuss in some detail quantum and classical cosmology of models based on perfect fluids (anti-Chaplygin gas and anti-Chaplygin gas …
We investigate late time acceleration of the universe in higher dimensional cosmology. The content in the universe is assumed to exert pressure which is different in the normal and extra dimensions. Cosmologically viable solutions are found to exist for simple forms of the equation of state. The parameters of the model are fixed by comparing the predictions with supernovae data. While observations stipulate that the matter exerts almost vanishing pressure in the normal dimensions, we assume that, in the extra dimensions, the equation of state is of the form $P \propto \, ρ^{1 - γ}$. For approp…
We show that in tilting perfect fluid cosmological models with an ultra-radiative equation of state, generically the tilt becomes extreme at late times and, as the tilt instability sets in, observers moving with the tilting fluid will experience singular behaviour in which infinite expansion is reached within a finite proper time, similar to that of phantom cosmology (but without the need for exotic forms of matter).
In this letter, we study the late-time evolution of a torsion cosmology only with the spin-$0^+$ mode. We find three kinds of analytical solutions with a constant affine scalar curvature. In the first case, it is not physical because the matter density will be negative. In the second case, it shows that the dark energy can be mimicked in the torsion cosmological model. In the third case, the characteristic of late-time evolution is similar to that of the universe of matter dominant. And we also find a kind of expression with the non-constant curvature that the periodic character of numerical c…
We review the effect of the formation of nonlinear structures on the expansion rate, spatial curvature and light propagation in the universe, focusing on the possibility that it could explain cosmological observations without the introduction of dark energy or modified gravity. We concentrate on explaining the relevant physics and highlighting open questions.
Assuming homogeneous isotropic Lambda-CDM cosmology allows Lambda, spatial curvature and dark matter density to be inferred from large scale structure observations such as supernovae. The purpose of this paper is to extend this to allow observations to measure or constrain inhomogeneity and anisotropy. We obtain the general inhomogeneous anisotropic Lambda-CDM solution which is locally asymptotic to an expanding de Sitter solution as a late time expansion using Starobinsky's method (analogous to the `holographic renormalization' technique in AdS/CFT) together with a resummation of the series. …
In this article, we study Coleman bounce in weakly nonlocal theories which are motivated from string field theory. The kinetic term is extended via an infinite series of high-order derivatives, which comes into play at an energy scale $M$, without introducing any new states or ghosts in the mass spectrum. We calculate the bubble nucleation in thin-wall approximation, treating the system in semi-classical manner. We find that the effect of nonlocal scale $M$ in the theory is to suppress the vacuum tunneling rate from false to true vacuum compared to the standard local bouncing scenario. Likewis…
We present a cosmological model with a solution that self-accelerates at late-times without signs of ghost instabilities on small scales. The model is a natural extension of the Brans-Dicke (BD) theory including a non-linear derivative interaction, which appears in a theory with the Galilean shift symmetry. The existence of the self-accelerating universe requires a negative BD parameter but, thanks to the non-linear term, small fluctuations around the solution are stable on small scales. General relativity is recovered at early times and on small scales by this non-linear interaction via the V…
Unimodular quantum cosmology admits wavepacket solutions that evolve according to a kind of Schrödinger equation. Though this theory is equivalent to general relativity on the classical level, its canonical structure is different and the problem of time does not occur. We present an Ehrenfest theorem for the long term evolution of the expectation value of the scale factor for a spatially flat Friedmann universe with a scalar field. We find that the classical and the quantum behaviour in the asymptotic future coincide for the special case of a massless scalar field. We examine the general behav…
We initiate a study of cosmology within the framework of Maldacena's AdS/CFT correspondence. We present a comprehensive analysis of the classical motion of a charged domain wall that separates an external Reissner-Nordstrom region of spacetime (with small or vanishing cosmological constant) from an internal de-Sitter region. The possible associated spacetime diagrams are drawn, although in the classical case, an unambiguous prediction of what occurs at late times in the interior region is not possible, since singularities and Cauchy horizons form. We argue that, when the asymptotic region is a…
Discrepancies between observations at early and late cosmic epochs, and the vacuum energy problem associated with the interpretation of cosmological constant, are questioning the $Λ$CDM model. Motivated by these conceptual and observational facts, extensions of Einstein's gravity are recently intensively considered in view of curing unsolved issues suffered by General Relativity at ultraviolet and infrared scales. Here, we provide a short overview of some aspects of $f(R)$ gravity, focusing, in particular, on cosmological applications. Specifically, Noether symmetries are adopted as a criterio…
We present a detailed analysis of the impact of $H_0$ priors from recent surveys in the literature on the late time cosmology of five $f(T)$ cosmological models using cosmic chronometers, the Pantheon data set, and baryonic acoustic oscillation data. In this work, we use three recently reported values of $H_0$ that have contributed to the recent $H_0$ tension problem. We find that these priors have a strong response in these analyses in terms of all the cosmological parameters. In general, our analyses gives much higher values of $H_0$ when considered against equivalent analyses without priors…
We study the late time evolution of a class of exact anisotropic cosmological solutions of Einstein's equations, namely spatially homogeneous cosmologies of Bianchi type VII$_0$ with a perfect fluid source. We show that, in contrast to models of Bianchi type VII$_h$ which are asymptotically self-similar at late times, Bianchi VII$_0$ models undergo a complicated type of self-similarity breaking. This symmetry breaking affects the late time isotropization that occurs in these models in a significant way: if the equation of state parameter $γ$ satisfies $γ\leq 4/3$ the models isotropize as regar…
In Hořava-Lifshitz cosmology we use the holographic Ricci-like cut-off for the energy density proposed by L. N. Granda and A. Oliveros and under this framework we study, through the cosmic evolution at late times, the sign change in the amount of non-conservation energy ($Q$) present in this cosmology. We revise the early stage (curvature-dependent) of this cosmology, where a term reminiscent of stiff matter is the dominant, and in this stage we find a power-law solution for the cosmic scale factor although $ω=-1$. Late and early phantom schemes are obtained without requiring $ω<-1$. Neverthel…
The thermodynamic behavior of a decaying vacuum cosmology describing the entire cosmological history evolving between two extreme (early and late time) de Sitter eras is investigated. The thermal evolution from the early de Sitter to the radiation phase is discussed in detail. The temperature evolution law and the increasing entropy function are analytically determined. The entropy of the effectively massless particles is initially zero but evolves continuously to the present day maximum value within the current Hubble radius, $S_0 \sim 10^{88}$ in natural units. By using the Gibbons-Hawking t…
We investigate the most general exact solutions of Brans-Dicke cosmology by choosing the scale factor "a" as the new independent variable. It is shown that a set of three field equations can be reduced to a constraint equation and a first order linear differential equation. Thus this new set of equations is solvable when one supplies one of the following pairs of functions: (Φ(a), \r{ho}(a)), (Φ(a), V(a)) or (Φ(a), H(a)). A universe with a single component energy-matter density is studied. It is seen that when there is no constant energy density, the Hubble function still contains a constant t…
We perform a detailed phase-space analysis of various phantom cosmological models, where the dark energy sector interacts with the dark matter one. We examine whether there exist late-time scaling attractors, corresponding to an accelerating universe and possessing dark energy and dark matter densities of the same order. We find that all the examined models, although accepting stable late-time accelerated solutions, cannot alleviate the coincidence problem, unless one imposes a form of fine-tuning in the model parameters. It seems that interacting phantom cosmology cannot fulfill the basic req…
We explore bounce cosmology in $F(\mathcal{G})$ gravity with the Gauss-Bonnet invariant $\mathcal{G}$. We reconstruct $F(\mathcal{G})$ gravity theory to realize the bouncing behavior in the early universe and examine the stability conditions for its cosmological solutions. It is demonstrated that the bouncing behavior with an exponential as well as a power-law scale factor naturally occurs in modified Gauss-Bonnet gravity. We also derive the $F(\mathcal{G})$ gravity model to produce the ekpyrotic scenario. Furthermore, we construct the bounce with the scale factor composed of a sum of two expo…
