We report on the first calculation of excited baryons with a chirally symmetric Hamiltonian, modeled after Coulomb gauge QCD (or upgraded from the Cornell meson potential model to a field theory in all of Fock-space) showing the insensitivity to chiral symmetry breaking. As has recently been understood, this leads to doubling between two hadrons of equal spin and opposite parity. As a novelty we show that three-quark, for example Delta states, group into quartets with two states of each parity, all four states having equal angular momentum J. Diagonalizing the chiral charge expressed in terms of quarks we show that the quartet is slightly split into two parity doublets by the tensor force, all splittings decreasing to zero high in the spectrum. Our specific calculation is for the family of maximum-spin excitations of the Delta baryon. We provide a model estimate of the experimental accuracy needed to establish Chiral Symmetry Restoration in the high spectrum.
We suggest that a measurement of masses of high-partial wave Delta resonances with an accuracy of 50 MeV should be sufficient to unambiguously establish the approximate degeneracy, and test the concept of running quark mass in the infrared.
We argue that there should exist the large combined fluctuations of chiral and diquark condensates along the phase boundary of QCD at moderately high density and relatively low temperature. Such fluctuations might lead to anomalous production of nucleons and its parity partner, which we propose to detect at NICA.
Chiral Symmetry Realization for Even- and Odd-parity Baryon Resonances
Recently the Lattice Strong Dynamics Collaboration reported a reduction of the electroweak S parameter for SU(3) gauge theory with Nf=6 fermions in the fundamental representation, compared to scaled-up QCD (arXiv:1009.5967). Here I provide additional details of our calculation. I discuss our use of conserved lattice currents; the relation to vector--axial parity doubling; finite-volume effects; and the sensitivity of our results to the number of fermion doublets with chiral electroweak couplings. Results presented here include additional data, and do not affect our previously-published conclus…
It is expected that nucleons and their parity partners become degenerate when chiral symmetry is restored. We investigate this question in the context of the thermal transition from the hadronic phase to the quark-gluon plasma, using lattice QCD simulations with N_f=2+1 flavours. We observe a clear sign of parity doubling in the quark-gluon plasma. Besides, we find that the nucleon ground state is, within the uncertainty, largely independent of the temperature, whereas temperature effects are substantial in the negative-parity (N^*) channel, already in the confined phase.
We formulate a set of mass relations for the baryon octet and decuplet with positive and negative parity in terms of the order parameter of QCD chiral symmetry. The Gell-Mann--Okubo mass formula and Gell-Mann's equal spacing rule hold manifestly in this approach. Thermal masses of the baryons are calculated in the mean field approximation for various pion masses, and the results are compared with the recent lattice studies. A general trend of the nucleon, $Δ$ and $Ω$ parity-doublers seen in the available lattice data can be understood qualitatively. Expected mass modifications of other strange…
We investigate the fate of baryons made out of u, d and s quarks in the hadronic gas and the quark-gluon plasma, using nonperturbative lattice simulations, employing the FASTSUM anisotropic Nf=2+1 ensembles. In the confined phase a strong temperature dependence is seen in the masses of the negative-parity groundstates, while the positive-parity groundstate masses are approximately temperature independent, within the error. At high temperature parity doubling emerges. A noticeable effect of the heavier s quark is seen. We give a simple description of the medium-dependent masses for the negative…
We study what happens to the Nucleon, Delta and Omega baryons in the hadronic gas and the quark-gluon plasma, with particular interest in parity doubling and its emergence as the plasma is heated. This is done using simulations of lattice QCD, employing the FASTSUM anisotropic Nf=2+1 ensembles, with four temperatures below and four above the deconfinement transition temperature. Below Tc we find that the positive-parity groundstate masses are largely temperature independent, whereas the negative-parity ones are reduced considerably as the temperature increases. This may be of interest for heav…
We describe a lattice simulation of the masses and decay constants of the lowest-lying vector and axial resonances, and the electroweak S parameter, in an SU(3) gauge theory with $N_f = 2$ and 6 fermions in the fundamental representation. The spectrum becomes more parity doubled and the S parameter per electroweak doublet decreases when $N_f$ is increased from 2 to 6, motivating study of these trends as $N_f$ is increased further, toward the critical value for transition from confinement to infrared conformality.
The extraction of right-handed currents, beyond the Standard Model, faces theoretical challenges from long-distance contributions. We show that these effects can be controlled by combining, for example, studies of $B \to V(1^-) γ$ and $B \to A(1^+) γ$ observables. The sum of the long-distance contributions can be extracted without compromise, and the individual pieces follow from a ratio predicted by theory. This leads to significant reduction in the uncertainty of long-distance contributions. The ideas extend to charm decays and the low $q^2$-region of $B \to V \ell \bar{\ell}$, and open the …
We study the mass spectrum of mesons at high temperature in $SU(2)$ gauge theory with two flavors of Dirac fundamental fermions. Numerical simulations are carried out on anisotropic lattices using Wilson fermions, with lattice parameters tuned so that Euclidean symmetry is restored at low energy. We determine the pseudo-critical temperature $T_c$ using renormalized Polyakov loops. We calculate temporal and spatial meson correlation functions across $T_c$, and observe a clear sign of parity doublings above $T_c$ in both vector and scalar channels. The degeneracy between parity partners in the s…
We investigate the fluctuations and correlations involving baryon number in hot hadronic matter with modified masses of negative-parity baryons, in the context of the hadron resonance gas. Temperature-dependent masses are adopted from the recent lattice QCD results and from a chiral effective model which implements the parity doubling structure with respect to the chiral symmetry. Confronting the baryon number susceptibility, baryon-charge correlation, and baryon-strangeness correlation and their ratios with the lattice QCD data, we show that the strong downward mass shift in hyperons can acci…
We develope the holographic mean field theory approach in a bottom-up holographic QCD model including baryons and scalar mesons in addition to vector mesons and pions. We study the effect of parity doubling structure of baryons at non-zero density to the equation of state between the chemical potential and the baryon number density. We first show that we can adjust the amount of nucleon mass coming from the chiral symmetry breaking by changing the boundary value of the five-dimensional baryon fields. Then, introducing the mean field for the baryon fields, we calculate the equation of state bet…
The V-A structure of the weak interactions leads to definite amplitude hierarchies in exclusive heavy-to-light decays mediated by $b \to (d,s)γ$ and $b \to (d,s) \ell \bar{\ell}$. However, the extraction of right-handed currents beyond the Standard Model is contaminated by V-A long-distance contributions leaking into right-handed amplitudes. We propose that these quantum-number changing long-distance contributions can be controlled by considering the almost parity-degenerate vector meson final states by exploiting the opposite relative sign of left- versus right-handed amplitudes. For example,…
We argue that three-quark excited states naturally group into quartets, split into two parity doublets, and that the mass splittings between these parity partners decrease higher up in the baryon spectrum. This decreasing mass difference can be used to probe the running quark mass in the mid-infrared power-law regime. A measurement of masses of high-partial wave Delta* resonances should be sufficient to unambiguously establish the approximate degeneracy. We test this concept with the first computation of excited high-j baryon masses in a chirally invariant quark model.
We investigate the equation of state for a recently developed hybrid quark-meson-nucleon model under neutron star conditions of $β-$equilibrium and charge neutrality. The model has the characteristic feature that at increasing baryon density chiral symmetry is restored in a first order transition within the hadronic phase by lifting the mass splitting between chiral partner states, before quark deconfinement takes place. Most important for this study are the nucleon (neutron, proton) and $N(1535)$ states. We present three sets for the two free parameters which result in compact star mass-radiu…
Chiral symmetry in QCD can be simultaneously in Wigner and Goldstone modes, depending on the part of the spectrum examined. The transition regime between both, exploiting for example the onset of parity doubling in the high baryon spectrum, can be used to probe the running quark mass in the mid-IR power-law regime. In passing we also argue that three-quark states naturally group into same-flavor quartets, split into two parity doublets, all splittings decreasing high in the spectrum. We propose that a measurement of masses of high-partial wave Delta* resonances should be sufficient to unambigu…

We report on the calculation of the Quarkonium Hybrid masses for the $cg\bar{c}$, $bg\bar{c}$ and $bg\bar{b}$ systems~\cite{hbrpaper}. A QCD analog of the Born-Oppenheimer approximation including the $Λ$--doubling terms has been used. The gluonic static energies are obtained combining the short range description from potential non--relativistic QCD (pNRQCD) and lattice QCD calculations. The effect $Λ$--doubling terms is to mix the contributions of the static energies to the hybrid states leading to the break of the degeneracy between spin symmetry multiplets with opposite parity. The spin symm…
We study the spectrum of light baryons and hyperons as a function of temperature using lattice gauge theory methods. We find that masses of positive parity states are temperature independent, within errors, in the hadronic phase. The negative parity states decrease in mass as the temperature increases. Above the deconfining temperature, lattice correlators and spectral functions show a degeneracy between parity sectors, i.e. parity doubling. We apply our findings to an in-medium Hadron Resonance Gas model. The techniques used in this study include direct analysis of the hadronic correlation fu…

The spectrum of triatomic molecules with close rovibrational opposite parity levels is sensitive to the $\mathcal{P}$,$\mathcal{T}$-odd effects. This makes them a convenient platform for the experimental search of a new physics. Among the promising candidates one may distinguish the YbOH as a non-radioactive compound with a heavy atom. The energy gap between levels of opposite parity, $l$-doubling, is of a great interest as it determines the electric field strength required for the full polarization of the molecule. Likewise, the influence of the bending and stretching modes on the sensitiviti…

We study properties of the thermal transition in QCD, using anisotropic, fixed-scale lattice simulations with $N_f = 2+1$ flavours of Wilson fermion. Observables are compared for two values of the pion mass, focusing on chiral properties. Results are presented for the Polyakov loop, various susceptibilities, the chiral condensate and its susceptibility, and the onset of parity doubling in the light and strange baryonic sector.
Properties of QCD matter change significantly around the chiral crossover temperature, and the effects on $U(1)_A$ and topological susceptibilities, as well as the meson spectrum have been studied with much care. Baryons and the effect of parity doubling in this temperature range have been analyzed previously by various other groups employing different setups. Here we construct suitable operators to investigate chiral and axial $U(1)_A$ symmetries in the baryon spectrum. Measurements for different volumes and quark-masses are done with two flavors of chirally symmetric domain-wall fermions at …
We present a calculation of the Nucleon and Delta excited state spectrum on dynamical anisotropic clover lattices. A method for operator construction is introduced that allows for the reliable identification of the continuum spins of baryon states, overcoming the reduced symmetry of the cubic lattice. Using this method, we are able to determine a spectrum of single-particle states for spins up to and including J = 7/2, of both parities, the first time this has been achieved in a lattice calculation. We find a spectrum of states identifiable as admixtures of SU(6) x O(3) representations and a c…
We study an SU(3) gauge theory with Nf=8 degenerate flavors of light fermions in the fundamental representation. Using the domain wall fermion formulation, we investigate the light hadron spectrum, chiral condensate and electroweak S parameter. We consider a range of light fermion masses on two lattice volumes at a single gauge coupling chosen so that IR scales approximately match those from our previous studies of the two- and six-flavor systems. Our results for the Nf=8 spectrum suggest spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking, though fits to the fermion mass dependence of spectral quantities do…
