We show that in (anomalous) U(1) gauge theories with the Fayet-Iliopoulos (FI) term and with generic interactions there are meta-stable vacua in which supersymmetry (SUSY) is spontaneously broken even without U(1)_R symmetry and various hierarchical structures, for example, Yukawa hierarchy, can be explained by the smallness of the FI parameter. When we introduce generic interactions, i.e., all interactions including higher dimensional interactions which are allowed by the symmetry of the theory with O(1) coefficients, various scales can be determined by the symmetry (U(1) charges of the introduced fields). We examine how to determine the various scales, the vacuum expectation values (VEVs), and the scales of F-term and of D-term. Moreover, we propose a new scenario for the stabilization of the moduli in the SUSY breaking models.
The notion of stringy naturalness-- that an observable O_2 is more natural than O_1 if more (phenomenologically acceptable) vacua solutions lead to O_2 rather than O_1-- is examined within the context of the Standard Model (SM) and various SUSY extensions: CMSSM/mSUGRA, high-scale SUSY and radiatively-driven natural SUSY (RNS). Rather general arguments from string theory suggest a (possibly mild) statistical draw towards vacua with large soft SUSY breaking terms. These vacua must be tempered by an anthropic veto of non-standard vacua or vacua with too large a value of the weak scale m(weak). W…
In N=1 supergravity the scalar potential may have supersymmetric (SUSY) and non-supersymmetric Minkowski vacua (associated with supersymmetric and physical phases) with vanishing energy density. In the supersymmetric Minkowski (second) phase some breakdown of SUSY may be induced by non-perturbative effects in the observable sector that give rise to a tiny positive vacuum energy density. Postulating the exact degeneracy of the physical and second vacua as well as assuming that at high energies the couplings in both phases are almost identical, one can estimate the dark energy density in these v…
We obtain the joint distribution of the gravitino mass and the cosmological constant in KKLT and LVS models with anti-D3 brane uplifting described via the nilpotent goldstino formalism. Moduli stabilisation (of both complex structure and Kaehler moduli) is incorporated so that we sample only over points corresponding to vacua. Our key inputs are the distributions of the flux superpotential, the string coupling and the hierarchies of warped throats. In the limit of zero cosmological constant, we find that both in KKLT and LVS the distributions are tilted favourably towards lower scales of super…
We study the meson spectra in the excited QCD vacua, denominated replicas. We find all mesons have real masses, with no tachyons, thus showing the QCD replicas are indeed metastable.
We show that color-breaking vacua may develop at high temperature in the Mini-Split Supersymmetry (SUSY) scenario. This can lead to a nontrivial cosmological history of the Universe, including strong first order phase transitions and domain wall production. Given the typical PeV energy scale associated with Mini-Split SUSY models, a stochastic gravitational wave background at frequencies around 1 kHz is expected. We study the potential for detection of such a signal in future gravitational wave experiments.
If supersymmetry is broken in metastable vacua, it is not clear why we are now in there rather than supersymmetric vacua. Moreover, it is natural to expect that we were in supersymmetric vacua, which have higher symmetry than metastable vacua, in the early universe. In this paper, we reexamine and improve the previous analysis on the cosmological evolution of the vacuum structure in the ISS model of metastable supersymmetry breaking by taking into account constraints on the reheating temperature, which is needed to avoid the overproduction of gravitinos. It turns out that the desired phase tra…
The statistics of the supersymmetry breaking scale in the string landscape has been extensively studied in the past finding either a power-law behaviour induced by uniform distributions of F-terms or a logarithmic distribution motivated by dynamical supersymmetry breaking. These studies focused mainly on type IIB flux compactifications but did not systematically incorporate the Kähler moduli. In this paper we point out that the inclusion of the Kähler moduli is crucial to understand the distribution of the supersymmetry breaking scale in the landscape since in general one obtains unstable vacu…
