We suggest that measuring the variation of the radius of an atomic cloud when the harmonic tap confinement is varied make it possible to monitor the disappearance of the insulating Mott phase of an ultracold atomic gas trapped in a disordered optical lattice. This paves the way for an unambiguous identification of a Bose glass phase in the system.
The phase diagram of the Bose-Hubbard model in the presence of off-diagonal disorder is determined using Quantum Monte Carlo simulations. A sequence of quantum glass phases intervene at the interface between the Mott insulating and the Superfluid phases of the clean system. In addition to the standard Bose glass phase, the coexistence of gapless and gapped regions close to the Mott insulating phase leads to a novel Mott glass regime which is incompressible yet gapless. Numerical evidence for the properties of these phases is given in terms of global (compressibility, superfluid stiffness) and …
We study cold atomic gases in a disorder potential and analyze the correlations between different systems subjected to the same disorder landscape. Such independent copies with the same disorder landscape are known as replicas. While in general these are not accessible experimentally in condensed matter systems, they can be realized using standard tools for controlling cold atomic gases in an optical lattice. Of special interest is the overlap function which represents a natural order parameter for disordered systems and is a correlation function between the atoms of two independent replicas w…
We study the square-lattice Bose-Hubbard model with bounded random on-site energies at zero temperature. Starting from a dual representation obtained from a strong-coupling expansion around the atomic limit, we employ a real-space block decimation scheme. This approach is non-perturbative in the disorder and enables us to study the renormalization-group flow of the induced random-mass distribution. In both insulating phases, the Mott insulator and the Bose glass, the average mass diverges, signaling short range superfluid correlations. The relative variance of the mass distribution distinguish…
We investigate the nature of the Bose glass phase of the disordered Bose-Hubbard model in $d>2$ and demonstrate the existence of a glass-like replica symmetry breaking (RSB) order parameter in terms of particle number fluctuations. Starting from a strong-coupling expansion around the atomic limit, we study the instability of the Mott insulator towards the formation of a Bose glass. We add some infinitesimal RSB, following the Parisi hierarchical approach in the most general form, and observe its flow under the momentum-shell renormalization group scheme. We find a new fixed point with one-step…
The role of geometrical frustration in strongly interacting bosonic systems is studied with a combined numerical and analytical approach. We demonstrate the existence of a novel quantum phase featuring both Bose-Einstein condensation and spin-glass behaviour. The differences between such a phase and the otherwise insulating "Bose glasses" are elucidated.
We investigate the instabilities of the Mott-insulating phase of the weakly disordered Bose-Hubbard model within a renormalization group analysis of the replica field theory obtained by a strong-coupling expansion around the atomic limit. We identify a new order parameter and associated correlation length scale that is capable of capturing the transition from a state with zero compressibility, the Mott insulator, to one in which the compressibility is finite, the Bose glass. The order parameter is the relative variance of the disorder-induced mass distribution. In the Mott insulator, the relat…
We study numerically a 2D Bose-Einstein condensate in a quasiperiodic array of potential peaks, assumed to be generated by superimposing five blue detuned laser beams. By using a Bogoliubov ansatz for the excitations we show that the system approaches a gapless, insulating phase upon increasing the potential, consistent with a Bose glass phase. The characteristics of the transition in terms of phase correlations, oscillatory modes, and superfluid fraction are discussed.
We probe the transition between superfluid and Bose glass phases using quantum quenches of disorder in an ultracold atomic lattice gas that realizes the disordered Bose-Hubbard model. Measurements of excitations generated by the quench exhibit threshold behavior in the disorder strength indicative of a phase transition. Ab-initio quantum Monte Carlo simulations confirm that the appearance of excitations coincides with the equilibrium superfluid--Bose-glass phase boundary at different lattice potential depths. By varying the quench time, we demonstrate the disappearance of an adiabatic timescal…
We study the one-dimensional Bose gas in spatially correlated disorder at zero temperature, using an extended density-phase Bogoliubov method. We analyze in particular the decay of the one-body density matrix and the behaviour of the Bogoliubov excitations across the phase boundary. We observe that the transition to the Bose glass phase is marked by a power-law divergence of the density of states at low energy. A measure of the localization length displays a power-law energy dependence in both regions, with the exponent equal to -1 at the boundary. We draw the phase diagram of the superfluid-i…
We used a micromechanical torsional oscillator to measure the magnetic response of a twinned YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ single crystal disk near the Bose glass transition. We observe an anomaly in the temperature dependence of the magnetization consistent with the appearance of a magnetic shielding perpendicular to the correlated pinning of the twin boundaries. This effect is related to the thermodynamic transition from the vortex liquid phase to a Bose glass state.
We study vortex lines in high-temperature superconductors with columnar defects produced by heavy ion irradiation. We reconsider scaling theory for the Bose glass transition with tilted magnetic fields, and propose, e.g., a new scaling form for the shape of the Bose glass phase boundary, which is relevant for experiments. We also consider Monte Carlo simulations for a vortex model with a screened interaction. Critical exponents are determined from scaling analysis of Monte Carlo data for current-voltage characteristics and other quantities. The dynamic critical exponent is found to be z = 4.6 …
The low-temperature states of bosonic fluids exhibit fundamental quantum effects at the macroscopic scale: the best-known examples are Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) and superfluidity, which have been tested experimentally in a variety of different systems. When bosons are interacting, disorder can destroy condensation leading to a so-called Bose glass. This phase has been very elusive to experiments due to the absence of any broken symmetry and of a finite energy gap in the spectrum. Here we report the observation of a Bose glass of field-induced magnetic quasiparticles in a doped quantum m…
We investigate the superfluid-insulator quantum phase transition in a disordered 1D Bose gas in the mean field limit, by studying the probability distribution of the density. The superfluid phase is characterized by a vanishing probability to have zero density, whereas a nonzero probability marks the insulator phase. This relation is derived analytically, and confirmed by a numerical study. This fragmentation criterion is particularly suited for detecting the phase transition in experiments. When a harmonic trap is included, the transition to the insulating phase can be extracted from the stat…
We study the Bose-Hubbard model in the presence of on-site disorder in the canonical ensemble and conclude that the local density of the Bose glass phase behaves differently at incommensurate filling than it does at commensurate one. Scaling of the superfluid density at incommensurate filling of $ρ=1.1$ and on-site interaction $U=80t$ predicts a superfluid-Bose glass transition at disorder strength of $Δ_c \approx 30t$. At this filling the local density distribution shows skew behavior with increasing disorder strength. Multifractal analysis also suggests a multifractal behavior resembling tha…
We present 3D numerical simulation results of moving vortex lattices in presence of 1D correlated disorder at zero temperature. Our results with field tilting confirm the theoritical predictions of a moving Bose glass phase, characterized by transverse pinning and dynamical transverse Meissner effect, the moving flux lines being localized along the correlated disorder direction. Beyond a critical transverse field, vortex lines exhibit along all their length a "kink" structure resulting from an effective static "tin roof" pinning potential in the transverse direction.
We employ Monte Carlo simulations to study the relaxation properties of the two-dimensional Coulomb glass in disordered semiconductors and the three-dimensional Bose glass in type-II superconductors in the presence of extended linear defects. We investigate the effects of adding non-zero random on-site energies from different distributions on the properties of the correlation-induced Coulomb gap in the density of states (DOS) and on the non-equilibrium aging kinetics highlighted by the density autocorrelation functions. We also probe the sensitivity of the system's equilibrium and non-equilibr…
We examine the effects of disorder on dimerized quantum antiferromagnets in a magnetic field, using the mapping to a lattice gas of hard-core bosons with finite-range interactions. Combining a strong-coupling expansion, the replica method, and a one-loop renormalization group analysis, we investigate the nature of the glass phases formed. We find that away from the tips of the Mott lobes, the transition is from a Mott insulator to a compressible Bose glass, however the compressibility at the tips is strongly suppressed. We identify this finding with the presence of a rare Mott glass phase not …
We numerically investigate the phase diagram of two-dimensional site-diluted coupled dimer systems in an external magnetic field. We show that this phase diagram is characterized by the presence of an extended Bose glass, not accessible to mean-field approximation, and stemming from the localization of two distinct species of bosonic quasiparticles appearing in the ground state. On the one hand, non-magnetic impurities doped into the dimer-singlet phase of a weakly coupled dimer system are known to free up local magnetic moments. The deviations of these local moments from full polarization alo…
A spin-wave approach of the zero temperature superfluid-insulator transition for two-dimensional hard-core bosons in a random potential $μ=\pm$ W is developed. While at the classical level there is no intervening phase between the Bose-condensed superfluid (SF) and the gapped disordered insulator, the introduction of quantum fluctuations leads to a much richer physics. Upon increasing the disorder strength W, the Bose-condensed fraction disappears first, before the SF. Then a gapless Bose-glass phase emerges over a finite region until the insulator appears. Furthermore, in the strongly disorde…
We review the physics of the Bose-Hubbard model with disorder in the chemical potential focusing on recently published analytical arguments in combination with quantum Monte Carlo simulations. Apart from the superfluid and Mott insulator phases that can occur in this system without disorder, disorder allows for an additional phase, called the Bose glass phase. The topology of the phase diagram is subject to strong theorems proving that the Bose Glass phase must intervene between the superfluid and the Mott insulator and implying a Griffiths transition between the Mott insulator and the Bose gl…
With the advent of spatially resolved fluorescence imaging in quantum gas microscopes, it is now possible to directly image glassy phases and probe the local effects of disorder in a highly controllable setup. Here we present numerical calculations using a spatially-resolved local mean-field theory, show that it captures the essential physics of the disordered system and use it to simulate the density distributions seen in single-shot fluorescence microscopy. From these simulated images we extract local properties of the phases which are measurable by a quantum gas microscope and show that una…
We study superfluid to Anderson insulator transition of strongly repulsive Bose gas in a one dimensional incommensurate optical lattice. In the hard core limit, the Bose-Fermi mapping allows us to deal with the system exactly by using the exact numerical method. Based on the Aubry-André model, we exploit the phase transition of the hard core boson system from superfluid phase with all the single particle states being extended to the Bose glass phase with all the single particle states being Anderson localized as the strength of the incommensurate potential increasing relative to the amplitude …
We consider the adiabatic evolution of glassy states under external perturbations. Although the formalism we use is very general, we focus here on infinite-dimensional hard spheres where an exact analysis is possible. We consider perturbations of the boundary, i.e. compression or (volume preserving) shear-strain, and we compute the response of glassy states to such perturbations: pressure and shear-stress. We find that both quantities overshoot before the glass state becomes unstable at a spinodal point where it melts into a liquid (or yields). We also estimate the yield stress of the glass. F…
We study the dynamic structure factor of a one-dimensional Bose gas confined in an optical lattice and modeled by the Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian, using a variety of numerical and analytical approaches. The dynamic structure factor, experimentally measurable by Bragg spectroscopy, is studied in three relevant cases: in the clean regime, featuring either a superfluid or a Mott phase; and in the presence of two types of (quasi-)disordered external potentials: a quasi-periodic potential obtained from a bichromatic superlattice and a random-box disorder - both featuring a Bose glass phase. In the cle…
For general quantum systems the power expansion of the Gibbs potential and consequently the power expansion of the self energy is derived in terms of the interaction strength. Employing a generalization of the projector technique a compact representation of the general terms of the expansion results. The general aspects of the approach are discussed with special emphasis on the effects characteristic for quantum systems. The expansion is systematic and leads directly to contributions beyond mean-field of all thermodynamic quantities. These features are explicitly demonstrated and illustrated f…
We use 3D numerical simulations to explore the phase diagram of driven flux line lattices in presence of weak random columnar disorder at finite temperature and high driving force. We show that the moving Bose glass phase exists in a large range of temperature, up to its melting into a moving vortex liquid. It is also remarkably stable upon increasing velocity : the dynamical transition to the correlated moving glass expected at a critical velocity is not found at any velocity accessible to our simulations. Furthermore, we show the existence of an effective static tin roof pinning potential in…
A fascinating feature of metallic glasses is their ability to explore different configurations under mechanical deformations. This effect is usually observed through macroscopic observables, while little is known on the consequence of the deformation at atomic level. Using the new generation of synchrotrons, we probe the atomic motion and structure in a metallic glass under hydrostatic compression, from the onset of the perturbation up to a severely-compressed state. While the structure indicates reversible densification under compression, the dynamic is dramatically accelerated and exhibits a…
We investigate the superfluid (SF) to Bose glass (BG) quantum phase transition using extensive quantum Monte Carlo simulations of two-dimensional hard-core bosons in a random box potential. $T=0$ critical properties are studied by thorough finite-size scaling of condensate and SF densities, both vanishing at the same critical disorder $W_c=4.80(5)$. Our results give the following estimates for the critical exponents: $z=1.85(15)$, $ν=1.20(12)$, $η=-0.40(15)$. Furthermore, the probability distribution of the SF response $P(\lnρ_{\rm sf})$ displays striking differences across the transition: whi…

We discuss transport and localization properties on the insulating side of the disorder dominated superconductor-insulator transition, described in terms of the dirty boson model. Analyzing the spectral properties of the interacting bosons in the absence of phonons, we argue that the Bose glass phase admits three distinct regimes. For strongest disorder the boson system is a fully localized, perfect insulator at any temperature. At smaller disorder, only the low temperature phase exhibits perfect insulation while delocalization takes place above a finite temperature. We argue that a third phas…
Using path integral Monte Carlo we simulate a 3D system of up to 1000 magnetic flux lines by mapping it onto a system of interacting bosons in (2+1)D. With increasing temperature we find a first order melting of flux lines from an ordered solid to an entangled liquid signalled by a finite entropy jump and sharp discontinuities in the defect density and the structure factor $S({\bf G})$ at the first reciprocal lattice vector. In the presence of a small number of strong columnar pins, we find that the crystal is transformed into a Bose glass phase with patches of crystalline order nucleated arou…
We report on results of Quantum Monte Carlo simulations for bosons in a two dimensional quasi-periodic optical lattice. We study the ground state phase diagram at unity filling and confirm the existence of three phases: superfluid, Mott insulator, and Bose glass. At lower interaction strength, we find that sizable disorder strength is needed in order to destroy superfluidity in favor of the Bose glass. On the other hand, at large enough interaction superfluidity is completely destroyed in favor of the Mott insulator (at lower disorder strength) or the Bose glass (at larger disorder strength). …
We consider the correlations and superfluid properties of a Bose gas in an external potential. Using a Bogoliubov scheme, we obtain expressions for the correlation function and the superfluid density in an arbitrary external potential. These expressions are applied to a one-dimensional system at zero temperature subject to a quasiperiodic modulation. The critical parameters for the Bose glass transition are obtained using two different criteria and the results are compared. The Lifshits glass is seen to be the limiting case for vanishing interactions.
We study the interplay between disorder and interactions for emergent bosonic degrees of freedom induced by an external magnetic field in the Br-doped spin-gapped antiferromagnetic material Ni(Cl$_{1-x}$Br$_x$)$_2$-4SC(NH$_2$)$_2$ (DTNX). Building on nuclear magnetic resonance experiments at high magnetic field [A. Orlova et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 118, 067203 (2017)], we describe the localization of isolated impurity states, providing a realistic theoretical modeling for DTNX. Going beyond single impurity localization we use quantum Monte Carlo simulations to explore many-body effects from whic…
We present a quantum Monte Carlo study of the "quantum glass" phase of the 2D Bose-Hubbard model with random potentials at filling $ρ=1$. In the narrow region between the Mott and superfluid phases the compressibility has the form $κ\sim {\rm exp}(-b/T^α)+c$ with $α<1$ and $c$ vanishing or very small. Thus, at $T=0$ the system is either incompressible (a Mott glass) or nearly incompressible (a Mott-glass-like anomalous Bose glass). At stronger disorder, where a glass reappears from the superfluid, we find a conventional highly compressible Bose glass. On a path connecting these states, away fr…
We study the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_1$ in random one-dimensional spin chains as function of the temperature and disorder strength. In the zero temperature limit, the system displays a disorder-induced quantum phase transition between a critical Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (TLL) phase and a localized Bose glass phase. The $1/T_1$ is investigated across this transition using large-scale simulations based on matrix product state techniques. We find that this quantity can detect the transition and probe the value of the dimensionless TLL parameter $K$. We …
Using large-scale simulations based on matrix product state and quantum Monte Carlo techniques, we study the superfluid to Bose glass-transition for one-dimensional attractive hard-core bosons at zero temperature, across the full regime from weak to strong disorder. As a function of interaction and disorder strength, we identify a Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless critical line with two different regimes. At small attraction where critical disorder is weak compared to the bandwidth, the critical Luttinger parameter $K_c$ takes its universal Giamarchi-Schulz value $K_{c}=3/2$. Conversely, a non-u…
We discuss magnetically ordered ("superfluid") phase near quantum transition to Bose-glass phase in a simple modeling system, Heisenberg antiferromagnet in spatial dimension $d>2$ in external magnetic field with disorder in exchange coupling constants. Our analytical consideration is based on hydrodynamic description of long-wavelength excitations. Results obtained are valid in the entire critical region near the quantum critical point (QCP) allowing to describe a possible crossover from one critical behavior to another. We demonstrate that the system behaves in full agreement with predictions…
I study the zero temperature phase transition between superfluid and insulating ground states of the Bose-Hubbard model in a random chemical potential and at large integer average number of particles per site. Duality transformation maps the pure Bose-Hubbard model onto the sine-Gordon theory in one dimension (1D), and onto the three dimensional Higgs electrodynamics in two dimensions (2D). In 1D the random chemical potential in dual theory couples to the space derivative of the dual field, and appears as a random magnetic field along the imaginary time direction in 2D. I show that the transit…
The disordered Bose-Hubbard model in two dimensions at non-integer filling admits a superfluid to Bose-glass transition at weak disorder. Less understood are the properties of this system at strong disorder and energy densities corresponding to excited states. In this work we study the Bose-glass transition of the ground state and the related finite energy localization transition, the mobility edge of the quasiparticle spectrum, a critical energy separating extended from localized quasiparticle excitations. To study these the fluctuation operator expansion is used. The level spacing statistics…
We use quantum Monte Carlo simulations with the worm algorithm to study the phase diagram of a two-dimensional Bose-Hubbard model with cavity-mediated long-range interactions and uncorrelated disorder in the hard-core limit. Our study shows the system is in a supersolid phase at weak disorder and a disordered solid phase at stronger disorder. Due to long-range interactions, a large region of metastable states exists in both clean and disordered systems. By comparing the phase diagrams for both clean and disordered systems, we find that disorder suppresses metastable states and superfluidity. W…
In this comment we address the preprint Z. Yao et al. (arXiv:1402.5417v1) concerning the conditions upon which the correct critical temperature exponent $ϕ$ can be observed (experimentally or numerically) close to the superfluid-Bose glass quantum phase transition in three dimensions. Yao et al. announce to have resolved the contradiction between the predictions of Fisher et al. [Phys. Rev. B 40, 546 (1989)] that $ϕ= νz \geq 2$ (where $ν$ and $z$ are critical exponents at the quantum phase transition) and recent experiments and simulations, showing an exponent $ϕ\sim 1.1$. Yao et al's resoluti…
We study an experimentally feasible system of strongly correlated bosons with random hoppings, described by the infinite-range Bose-Hubbard model on a lattice with hopping integrals given by independent random variables of Gaussian distribution with non-zero mean. We solve this quantum model in the thermodynamic limit, employing the replica method and the Trotter-Suzuki formula. We find and describe a superglass phase that emerges at the interface between glass and superfluid phases. Both glassy and long-range orderings are present in the superglass and compete with each other, as revealed by …
We consider a one-dimensional system of interacting bosons in a random potential. At zero temperature, it can be either in the superfluid or in the insulating phase. We study the transition at weak disorder and moderate interaction. Using a systematic approach, we derive the renormalization group equations at two-loop order and discuss the phase diagram. We find the universal form of the correlation functions at the transitions and compute the logarithmic corrections to the main universal power-law behavior. In order to mimic large density fluctuations on a single site, we study a simplified m…
We present a review of properties of ultracold atomic Fermi-Bose mixtures in inhomogeneous and random optical lattices. In the strong interacting limit and at very low temperatures, fermions form, together with bosons or bosonic holes, {\it composite fermions}. Composite fermions behave as a spinless interacting Fermi gas, and in the presence of local disorder they interact via random couplings and feel effective random local potential. This opens a wide variety of possibilities of realizing various kinds of ultracold quantum disordered systems. In this paper we review these possibilities, dis…
We develop a Bose fluid model in a confined potential to consider the new quantum phase due to the localization of Bose-Einstein condensation and disappearance of superfluidity which is recently observed in liquid 4He in porous glass at high pressures. A critical pressure of the transition to this phase can be defined by our new analytical criterion of supposing the size of localized Bose-Einstein condensate becomes comparable to the scale of confinement. The critical pressure is quantitatively consistent with observations without free parameters.
We theoretically investigate high-pressure effects on the atomic dynamics of metallic glasses. The theory predicts compression-induced rejuvenation and the resulting strain hardening that have been recently observed in metallic glasses. Structural relaxation under pressure is mainly governed by local cage dynamics. The external pressure restricts the dynamical constraints and slows down the atomic mobility. In addition, the compression induces a rejuvenated metastable state (local minimum) at a higher energy in the free energy landscape. Thus, compressed metallic glasses can rejuvenate and the…
The conventional theory of metals is in crisis. In the last 15 years, there has been an unexpected sprouting of metallic states in low dimensional systems directly contradicting conventional wisdom. For example, bosons are thought to exist in one of two ground states: condensed in a superconductor or localized in an insulator. However, several experiments on thin metal alloy films have observed that a metallic phase disrupts the direct transition between the superconductor and the insulator. We analyze the experiments on the insulator-superconductor transition and argue that the intervening me…
We study the equilibrium properties of the one-dimensional disordered Bose-Hubbard model by means of a gauge-adaptive tree tensor network variational method suitable for systems with periodic boundary conditions. We compute the superfluid stiffness and superfluid correlations close to the superfluid to glass transition line, obtaining accurate locations of the critical points. By studying the statistics of the exponent of the power-law decay of the correlation, we determine the boundary between the superfluid region and the Bose glass phase in the regime of strong disorder and in the weakly in…
