CP-violating effects in the time-dependent angular distribution of the B^0_s -> J/psi[-> ell^+ ell^-] phi[-> K^+K^-] decay products play a key role for the search of new physics. The hadronic Standard-Model uncertainties are related to doubly Cabibbo-suppressed penguin contributions and are usually assumed to be negligibly small. In view of recent results from the Tevatron and the quickly approaching start of the data taking at the LHC, we have a critical look at the impact of these terms, which could be enhanced through long-distance QCD phenomena, and explore the associated uncertainty for the measurement of the CP-violating B^0_s-\bar B^0_s mixing phase. We point out that these effects can actually be controlled by means of an analysis of the time-dependent angular distribution of the B^0_s -> J/psi[-> ell^+ ell^-] \bar K^{*0}[-> pi^+ K^-] decay products, and illustrate this through numerical studies. Moreover, we discuss SU(3)-breaking effects, which limit the theoretical accuracy of our method, and suggest internal consistency checks of SU(3).
This paper is concerned with the physics of meson decays to J/psi and phi. These decays have been observed at the Tevatron [7] and, in particular, should be copiously observed at the LHCb detector. This paper gives a concise presentation of the basic physics analysis and a general formalism for analyzing the signals of CP violation.
Data on B+ --> J/psi phi K+ and the Y(4140) enhancement recently reported by the CDF collaboration [arxiv:0903.2229] are analysed. The threshold behaviour, as well as traces of the X(4260) enhancement, the known c-cbar resonances psi(2D), psi(4S), and a tentative psi(3D) state, as observed in the mass distribution, suggest that the J/psi+phi system has quantum numbers JPC=1--. It is then argued that the Y(4140) enhancement does not represent any kind of resonance, but instead is a natural consequence of the opening of the J/psi+phi channel.
The a0(980)-f0(980) mixing intensity has been predicted to be in the range of 0.01 to 0.1 by various theoretical models, but lacking firm experimental observation. We examine the possibility of extracting the a0(980)-f0(980) mixing from J/psi -> phi f0 -> phi a0 reaction at upgraded Beijing Electron Positron Collider with BESIII detector. While the branching ratio of this process through the a0(980)-f0(980) mixing is expected to be about $O(10^{-6})$ similar to the estimated total amount from two background reactions J/psi -> gamma* -> phi a0 and J/psi -> K* K + c.c. -> phi a0, the peak width …
We calculate the leading-order perturbative contribution to $γp \to M_{V} p$, with $M_V$ being a $Φ$ or $J/Ψ$ meson, in the kinematic region of large energy and scattering angle.
We investigate the cos 2 phi azimuthal asymmetry in Drell--Yan and J/psi production from unpolarized ppbar scattering at GSI-HESR energies. The contribution to this asymmetry arising from the leading-twist Boer-Mulders function h_1^perp(x, k_T^2), which describes a correlation between the transverse momentum and the transverse spin of quarks in an unpolarized hadron, is explicitly evaluated, and predictions for the GSI-HESR kinematic regime are presented. We show that the cos 2 phi asymmetry is quite sizable both on the J/psi peak and in the Drell-Yan continuum region. Therefore these processe…
We suggest that the J/psi phi structures observed by LHCb can be fitted in two tetraquak multiplets, the S-wave ground state and the first radial excitation, with composition [cs][cbar sbar]. When compared to the previously identified [cq][cbar qbar] multiplet, the observed masses agree with what expected for a multiplet with q -->s. We propose the X(4274), fitted by LHCb with a single 1^++ resonance, to correspond rather to two, almost degenerate, unresolved lines with J^PC = 0^++, 2^++. Masses of missing particles in the 1S and 2S multiplets are predicted.
Study of CP violation in the decay channel Bs->J/psi phi is essential to exploring and constraining physics beyond the Standard Model in the quark flavour sector. The experimental progress in this area of activity at the LHC and Tevatron is discussed.
We propose to test CP symmetry in the decay $\jp\to γϕϕ$, for which large data sample exists at BESII, and a data sample of $10^{10}$ $J/ψ$'s will be collected with BESIII and CLEO-C program. We suggest some CP asymmetries in this decay mode for CP test. Assuming that CP violation is introduced by the electric- and chromo-dipole moment of charm quark, these CP asymmetries can be predicted by using valence quark models. Our work shows a possible way to get information about the electric- and chromo-dipole moment of charm quark, which is little known. Our results show that with the current data …
We analyse supersymmetric contributions to B_s mixing and their impact on mixing-induced CP asymmetries, using the mass insertion approximation. We discuss in particular the correlation of SUSY effects in the CP asymmetries of B_s -> J/psi phi and B_d -> phi K_S and find that the mass insertions dominant in B_s mixing and B_d -> phi K_S are (delta_{23}^d)_{LL, RR} and (delta_{23}^d)_{LR, RL}, respectively. We show that models with dominant (delta_{23}^d)_{LR, RL} can accomodate a negative value of S_{phi K_S}, in agreement with the BELLE measurement of that observable, but yield a B_s mixing p…
Recently, the BES collaboration has published an extensive partial wave analysis of experimental data on J/psi -> phi pi+pi-, J/psi -> omega pi+pi-, J/psi -> phi K+K- and J/psi -> omega K+K-. These new results are analyzed here, with full account of detection efficiencies, in the framework of a chiral unitary description with coupled-channel final state interactions between pi-pi and K-bar K pairs. The emission of a dimeson pair is described in terms of the strange and nonstrange scalar form factors of the pion and the kaon, which include the final state interaction and are constrained by unit…
We calculate a number of observables related to particle-antiparticle mixing in the Littlest Higgs model with T-parity (LHT). The resulting effective Hamiltonian for Delta F=2 transitions agrees with the one of Hubisz et al., but our phenomenological analysis goes far beyond the one of these authors. In particular, we point out that the presence of mirror fermions with new flavour and CP-violating interactions allows to remove the possible Standard Model (SM) discrepancy between the CP asymmetry S_{psi K_S} and large values of |V_ub| and to obtain for the mass difference Delta M_s < (Delta M_s…
Cross sections of the e+e- annihilation into one photon plus two vector mesons, such as J/psi rho, J/psi phi, and rho phi at the center of mass energy \sqrt{s}=10.58GeV are calculated. These shed light on the measurement of the e+e- annihilation cross section via radiative return in B-factories. At another center of mass energy \sqrt{s}=3.097GeV, namely the J/psi resonance peak, the processes e+e- --> gamma VV and e+e- --> gamma gamma V (with V being rho, omega, or phi) are calculated with similar method. These calculations give estimation of the background levels in the study of radiative or …
Recently, the CDF and D0 collaborations measured indirect CP violation in Bs -> J/psi phi and found a hint of a signal. If taken at face value, this can be interpreted as a nonzero phase of Bs-Bsbar mixing (beta_s), in disagreement with the standard model, which predicts that beta_s ~= 0. In this paper, we argue that this analysis may be incomplete. In particular, there can be new physics (NP) in the bbar -> sbar c cbar decay. If so, the value of beta_s is different than for the case in which NP is assumed to be present only in the mixing. We have examined several models of NP and found that, …
We emphasize that the recent measurements of the B^0_s - bar B^0_s mass difference Delta M_s by the CDF and D0 collaborations offer an important model independent test of minimal flavour violation (MFV). The improved measurements of the angle gamma in the unitarity triangle and of |V_ub| from tree level decays, combined with future accurate measurements of Delta M_s, S_{psi K_S}, S_{psi phi}, Br(B_{d,s} -> mu+ mu-), Br(B -> X_{d,s} nu bar nu), Br(K+ -> pi+ nu bar nu) and Br(K_L -> pi^0 nu bar nu) and improved values of the relevant non-perturbative parameters, will allow to test the MFV hypoth…
In the hadrocharmonium picture a $\bar cc$ state and a light hadron form a bound state. The effective interaction is described in terms of the chromoelectric polarizability of the $\bar cc$ state and energy-momentum-tensor densities of the light hadron. This picture is justified in the heavy quark limit, and may successfully account for a hidden-charm pentaquark state recently observed by LHCb. In this work we extend the formalism to the description of hidden-charm tetraquarks, and address the question of whether the resonant states observed by LHCb in the $J/ψ$-$ϕ$ spectrum can be described a…
Using the QCD sum rules we test if the charmonium-like structure Y(4274), observed in the $J/ψϕ$ invariant mass spectrum, can be described with a $D_s\bar{D}_{s0}(2317)+h.c.$ molecular current with $J^{PC}=0^{-+}$. We consider the contributions of condensates up to dimension ten and we work at leading order in $α_s$. We keep terms which are linear in the strange quark mass $m_s$. The mass obtained for such state is $m_{D_s{D}_{s0}}=(4.80\pm 0.55)$ GeV. We also consider a molecular $0^{-+}$ $D\bar{D}_{0}(2400)+h.c.$ current and we obtain $m_{D{D}_0}=(4.61\pm 0.71)$ GeV. Our study shows that the…
We extract the pole positions, hadronic and gamma-gamma widths of sigma and f_0(980, from pi-pi and gamma-gamma scattering data using an improved analytic K-matrix model. Our results favour a large gluon component for the sigma and a \bar ss or/and gluon component for the f_0(980) but neither a large four-quark nor a molecule component. Gluonium sigma_B production from J/psi, phi radiative and D_s semi-leptonic decays are also discussed.
The omega-phi threshold peak observed by BES in J/Psi -> gamma(omega-phi) may be interpreted quantitatively in terms of a glueball component in fo(1790).
Enlightened by the idea of the 3 times 3 CKM angle matrix proposed recently by Harrison et al., we introduce the Dirac angle matrix Phi and the Majorana angle matrix Psi in the lepton sector for Dirac and Majorana neutrinos respectively. We show that in presence of the CP violation, the angle matrix Phi or Psi is entirely equivalent to the complex MNS matrix V itself, but has the advantage of being real, phase rephasing invariant, directly associated to the leptonic unitarity triangles (UTs) and do not depend on any particular parametrization of V. In this paper, we further analyzed how the an…
Exclusive diffractive photoproduction of heavy vector mesons (V=phi, J/psi and Upsilon) at HERA is studied in a model employing a dipole Pomeron exchange (P) with an inelastic gamma-P-V vertex. The model is fitted to the data on dsigma/dt, B and elastic sigma for Q^2=0 and beyond the threshold region. The elastic cross sections for both phi and J/psi photoproduction show a moderate increase within the HERA energy region. The flattening of the slope B(s) (little or no shrinkage) for J/psi is not correlated with the slope of the Pomeron trajectory. Estimates for Upsilon photoproduction at HERA a…
Currently there are New Physics hints in mixing-induced CP violation S(phi K0), S(pi0 K0) < S(J/psi K0), unequal direct CP violation A(K+ pi-) differs A(K+ pi0), and maybe even in measured S(J/psi K0) vs prediction from global fit to other data. However, these hints either suffer from experimental uncertainties, or uncertain hadronic corrections, and are not yet unequivocal. Motivated by these hints, however, we point out that a unique probe may be direct CP violation in B to JψK mode. An asymmetry observed at 1% or higher would indicate New Physics.
We present a detailed study, done in the framework of the INFN 2006 Roadmap, of the prospects for e+e- physics at the Frascati National Laboratories. The physics case for an e+e- collider running at high luminosity at the phi resonance energy and also reaching a maximum center of mass energy of 2.5 GeV is discussed, together with the specific aspects of a very high luminosity tau-charm factory. Subjects connected to Kaon decay physics are not discussed here, being part of another INFN Roadmap working group. The significance of the project and the impact on INFN are also discussed. All the docu…
The isospin violating $J/Ψ\to ϕπ^0 η$ decay is thought to be dominated by the mixing of the $f_0(980)$ and $a_0(980)$ scalar resonances. We make a theoretical evaluation of the $J/Ψ\to ϕπ^0 η$ decay extending our own previous model for other $J/Ψ$ decays into one vector meson and two pseudoscalars using the techniques of the chiral unitary approach. The scalar resonances are dynamically generated through the final state interaction of the pseudoscalar mesons implementing unitarity from the lowest order ChPT amplitudes. Besides the direct $J/ΨϕPP$ vertex, other mechanisms like the sequential ex…
The following topics are considered. 1) Confinement, chiral dynamics, and light scalar mesons. 2) Chiral shielding of the $σ(600)$. 3) The $ϕ$ meson radiative decays about nature of light scalar resonances. 4) The $J/ψ$ decays about nature of light scalar resonances. 5) The $a_0(980)\toγγ$ and $f_0(980)\toγγ$ decays about nature of light scalar resonances. 6) New round in $γγ\toπ^+π^-$, the Belle data. Arguments in favor of the four-quark model of the $a_0(980)$ and $f_0(980)$ mesons are given.
The difference in the time dependent CP asymmetries between the modes $B --> psi K_S$ and $B --> phi K_S$ is a clean signal for physics beyond the Standard Model. This interpretation could fail if there is a large enhancement of the matrix element of the $b --> u ubar s$ operator between the $B_d$ initial state and the $phi K_S$ final state. We argue against this possibility and propose some experimental tests that could shed light on the situation.
Recently, the D0 Collaboration measured the CP-violating like-sign dimuon charge asymmetry in neutral B decays, finding a 3.2sigma difference from the standard-model (SM) prediction. A non-SM charge asymmetry a_sl^s suggests a new-physics (NP) contribution to Bs-Bsbar mixing. In this case, in order to explain the measured value of a_sl^s within its 1sigma range, NP must be present in Gamma_12^s, the absorptive part of the mixing. In this paper, we examine whether such an explanation is possible in models with flavor-changing Z (ZFCNC) or Z' (Z'FCNC) gauge bosons. The models must also reproduce…
The semi-annihilation reaction takes the schematic form psi_i psi_j -> psi_k phi, where psi_i are stable dark matter particles and phi is an unstable state. Such reactions are allowed when dark matter is stabilized by a larger symmetry than just Z_2. They lead to non-trivial dark matter dynamics in the early universe, and the thermal production of the relic particles can be completely controlled by semi-annihilations. This process might also take place today in the Milky Way, enriching the (semi-)annihilation final state spectrum observed in indirect detection experiments.
The D0 collaboration has recently announced evidence for a dimuon CP asymmetry in B_{d,s} decays of order one percent. If confirmed, this asymmetry requires new physics. We argue that for minimally flavor violating (MFV) new physics, and at low tan beta=v_u/v_d, there are only two four-quark operators (Q_{2,3}) that can provide the required CP violating effect. The scale of such new physics must lie below 260 GeV sqrt{tan beta}. The effect is universal in the B_s and B_d systems, leading to S_{psi K}~sin(2beta)-0.15 and S_{psi phi}~0.25. The effects on epsilon_K and on electric dipole moments …
We consider several hints for new physics involving CP-asymmetries in B-decays and interpret them in terms of generic contributions to effective Wilson coefficients. The effects we focus on are: the differences in the fitted value of sin(2 beta) versus the ones directly measured via the time dependent CP asymmetries in B -> J/psi K or via B -> (phi, eta') K; the difference between the direct CP asymmetries in B- -> K- pi0 and B0 -> K- pi+ and the ~2.2 sigma indications for the CP-asymmetry in Bs -> J/psi phi. To alleviate concerns regarding the disagreement between inclusive and exclusive Vub, …
The rare decay B --> Phi K_S is a well-known probe of physics beyond the Standard Model because it arises only through loop effects yet has the same time-dependent CP asymmetry as B --> Psi K_S. Motivated by recent data suggesting new physics in B --> Phi K_S, we look to supersymmetry for possible explanations, including contributions mediated by gluino loops and by Higgs bosons. Chirality-preserving LL and RR gluino contributions are generically small, unless gluinos and squarks masses are close to the current lower bounds. Higgs contributions are also too small to explain a large asymmetry i…
We perform an extensive study of FCNC and CP Violation within Supersymmetric (SUSY) theories with particular emphasis put on processes governed by b->s transitions and of their correlations with processes governed by b->d transitions, s->d transitions, $D^0-\bar D^0$ oscillations, lepton flavour violating decays, electric dipole moments and (g-2)_mu. We first perform a comprehensive model-independent analysis of Delta F=2 observables and we emphasize the usefulness of the R_b-gamma plane in exhibiting transparently various tensions in the present UT analyses. Secondly, we consider a number of …
The non-minimal flavour violating interactions of mirror quarks and new heavy gauge bosons in the Littlest Higgs model with T-parity (LHT) give rise to naturally large CP-violating effects in the B_s system. In view of a large new CP phase in B_s - anti-B_s mixing hinted by the CDF and D0 data and the recent UTfit analysis, we update our 2006 analysis of particle-antiparticle mixing and rare K and B decays in the LHT model, using the most recent values of a number of input parameters and performing a more careful error analysis. We find that the CP-asymmetry S_{psi phi} can easily reach values…
The stringent correlations between flavour observables in models with CMFV are consistent with the present data except for the correlation Delta M_{s,d}-epsilon_K. Motivated by the recent work of Barbieri et al, we compare the CMFV correlations with the ones present in a special class of models with an approximate global U(2)^3 flavour symmetry, constrained by a minimal set of spurions governing the breakdown of this symmetry and the assumption that only SM operators are relevant in flavour physics. This analog of CMFV to be called MU(2)^3 allows to avoid the Delta M_{s,d}-epsilon_K tension in…
We investigate the reaction gamma+p -> V+p, with V denoting a Phi or a J/Psi meson, within the scope of perturbative QCD, treating the proton as a quark-diquark system. Our predictions extrapolate the existing forward differential cross-section data into the few-GeV momentum-transfer region. In case of the J/Psi reasonable results are only obtained by properly taking into account its mass in the perturbative calculation of the hard-scattering amplitude.
We point out that the observed CP violation in Bd - bar{Bd} mixing, taking into account the measured ratio Delta Md / Delta Ms, the recently improved lattice value of the non-perturbative parameter BK and an additional effective suppression factor kappa_epsilon ~= 0.92 in epsilon_K neglected sofar in most analyses, may be insufficient to describe the measured value of epsilon_K within the Standard Model (SM), thus hinting at new CP violating contributions to the K - bar{K} and/or Bd - bar{Bd} systems. Furthermore, assuming that Delta Md / Delta Ms is SM-like, the signs and the magnitudes of ne…
The Y(4140) observed by CDF appears to have a novel explanation. Its mass and width coincide within experimental error with a two-step process. In the first step, Y(4140) -> D_sbar + pi + D_s where the pion is virtual. A loop diagram involving this virtual pion allows Y(4140) de-excitation to J/psi + phi. Its predicted spin-parity is JPC = 1++. The same mechanism for Dbar-D^* configurations predicts a similar structure at 3911-3918 MeV, consistent with the peak at 3915 +- 3 MeV observed in omega J/psi by Babar and Belle. Relative branching ratios observed for B+ -> phi J/psi K+ and B+ -> omega…
Recent measurements of time dependent CP asymmetry in B --> phi K_S, if confirmed, would indicate a new source of CP violation. We examine flavor violating tree-level Z currents in models with extra down-type quark singlets that arise naturally in string compactified gauge groups like E_6. We evaluate the new operators at the scale mu = m_b in NLO, and using QCD improved factorization to describe B --> phi K_S, find the allowed range of parameters for rho and psi, the magnitude and phase of the flavor violating parameter U_{bs}. This allowed range does satisfy the constraint from flavor changi…
Within the standard model (SM), the time dependent CP asymmetries in B -> psi K_S, B -> eta' K_S and B -> phi K_S are expected to give the same result i.e. sin (2 beta). However recent measurements of the mixing induced CP asymmetries in B -> phi K_S and B -> eta' K_S modes give results whose central values differ from SM expectations. We explore the effects of new physics in the two Higgs doublet model (THDM), which allows tree level flavor changing neutral currents (so called Model III), and the model with extra vector like down quark (VLDQ). We find that the observed mixing induced CP asymm…
We study D-brane inflation in a warped conifold background that includes brane-position dependent corrections for the nonperturbative superpotential. Instead of stabilizing the volume modulus chi at instantaneous minima of the potential and studying the inflation dynamics with an effective single field (radial distance between a brane and an anti-brane) phi, we investigate the multi-field inflation scenario involving these two fields. The two-field dynamics with the potential V(phi, chi) in this model is significantly different from the effective single-field description in terms of the field p…
We report on an extensive analysis of FCNC and CPV effects in SUSY theories. We present results for Delta F=2 and Delta F=1 processes governed by b --> s transitions both in the low and high tanbeta regime, focussing in particular on S_psi_phi, the phase of Bs mixing. We emphasize that while the MFV framework is not suited to explain potentially large effects in S_psi_phi as indicated by recent data from CDF and D0, models with large right-right mass insertions in the 32 sector provide natural frameworks to account for such effects. Exemplarily we consider two SUSY models based on an abelian a…
We present a measurement of the \CP-violating parameter \betas using approximately 6500 $\BsJpsiPhi$ decays reconstructed with the CDF\,II detector in a sample of $p\bar p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=1.96$ TeV corresponding to 5.2 fb$^{-1}$ integrated luminosity produced by the Tevatron Collider at Fermilab. We find the \CP-violating phase to be within the range $\betas \in [0.02, 0.52] \cup [1.08, 1.55]$ at 68% confidence level where the coverage property of the quoted interval is guaranteed using a frequentist statistical analysis. This result is in agreement with the standard model expectation…
We show that the decay Bs -> J/psi f0(980), f0(980)->pi+ pi- can be used to measure the CP violating phase in Bs mixing, -2β_s, and estimate the sensitivity as +/- 0.050 rad, for 2/fb of LHCb data. After adding in the related Bs -> J/psi eta', η' -> rho gamma mode, the sensitivity improves to +/- 0.044 rad. Use of these CP eigenstates obviates the need for a transversity analysis that must be used in the case of Bs -> J/psi phi decays.
Using an improved "analytic K-matrix model", we reconsider the extraction of the sigma/f_0(600) and f_0(980) gamma-gamma widths from gamma-gamma to pi-pi scatterings data of Crystal Ball and Belle. Our main results are summarized in Tables 3 and 4. The averaged sigma "direct width" to gamma-gamma is 0.16(3) keV which confirms a previous result of [1] and which does neither favour a large four-quark (diquark-antidiquark) nor a molecule nor a pure \bar qq component. The "direct width" of the f_0(980) of 0.28(2) keV is much larger than the four-quark expectation but can be compatible with a \bar …
The coming flavour precision era will allow to uncover various patterns of flavour violation in different New Physics (NP) scenarios that are presently washed out by hadronic and experimental uncertainties. We illustrate this by performing the anatomy of flavour violation in the 331 models, based on the gauge group SU(3)_C X SU(3)_L X U(1)_X that are among the simplest NP scenarios with new sources of flavour and CP violation. The latter originate dominantly through the flavour violating interactions of ordinary quarks and leptons with a new heavy Z' gauge boson. After discussing first these m…
