On the basis of self-consistent Born approximation, we present a theory of weak localization of Dirac fermions under finite-range scatters in graphene. With an explicit solution to the ground state of singlet pseudospin Cooperons, we solve the Bethe-Salpeter matrix equation for all the singlet and triplet pseudospin Cooperons at long-wave length states by perturbation treatment. The solution to the Cooperon in the presence of the external weak magnetic field is also obtained. We calculate the quantum interference correction to the conductivity and present the comparison with experiments. It is shown that the present calculation for the magnetoconductivity is in good agreement with some of the experimental measurements.
We report pronounced magnetoconductance oscillations observed on suspended bilayer and trilayer graphene devices with mobilities up to 270,000 cm2/Vs. For bilayer devices, we observe conductance minima at all integer filling factors nu between 0 and -8, as well as a small plateau at ν=1/3. For trilayer devices, we observe features at nu=-1, -2, -3 and -4, and at ν~0.5 that persist to 4.5K at B=8T. All of these features persist for all accessible values of Vg and B, and could suggest the onset of symmetry breaking of the first few Landau (LL) levels and fractional quantum Hall states.
Magnetic impurities adsorbed on graphene are coupled magnetically via the itinerant electrons. This interaction opens a gap in the band structure of graphene. The result strongly depends on how the magnetic impurities are distributed. While random doping produces a semiconductor, if all or most impurities are located in the same sublattice, the spin degeneracy is removed and a spin-polarized semiconductor arises.
Two magnetic impurities on the edge of a zigzag graphene nanoribbon strongly interact with each other via indirect coupling, which can be mediated by conducting carriers. By means of Quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) simulations, we find that the spin-orbit coupling $λ$ and the chemical potential $μ$ in system can be used to drive the transition of local-spin exchange from ferromagnetism to anti-ferromagnetism. Since the tunable ranges for $λ$ and $μ$ in graphene are experimentally reachable, we thus open the possibilities for its device application. The symmetry in spatial distribution is broken by t…
We used a quantum Monte Carlo method to study the magnetic impurity adatoms on graphene. We found that by tuning the chemical potential we could switch the values of the impurity's local magnet moment between relatively large and small values. Our computations of the impurity's spectral density found its behavior to differ significantly from that of an impurity in a normal metal and our computations of the charge-charge and spin-spin correlations between the impurity and the conduction band electrons found them to be strongly suppressed. In general our results are consistent with those from po…
We consider a graphene sheet in the presence of a strong perpendicular magnetic field with a single short-range delta-impurity situated at one of the carbon sites. We study the neutral inter-Landau level collective excitations, magnetoplasmons, which become localized on the impurity. Some of these excitations involve a pseudospin flip (intervalley transitions), since the impurity can scatter electrons between the two valleys. We propose a classification of states of the excitations in graphene and introduce the appropriate quantum numbers. The energies and optical strengths of collective excit…
We have followed a "molecular" approach to study impurity effects in graphene. This is thought as the limiting case of an infinitely large cluster of benzene rings. Therefore, we study several carbon clusters, with increasing size, from phenalene, including three benzene rings, up to coronene 61, with 61 benzene rings. The impurities considered were a chemisorbed H atom, a vacancy, and a substitutional proton. We performed HF and UHF calculations using the STO-3G basis set. With increasing cluster size in the absence of impurities, we find a decreasing energy gap, here defined as the HOMO-LUMO…
The cooperative behavior of quantum impurities on 2D materials, such as graphene and bilayer graphene, is characterized by a non-trivial competition between screening (Kondo effect), and Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) magnetism. In addition, due to the small density of states at the Fermi level, impurities may not couple to the conduction electrons at all, behaving as free moments. Employing a recently developed {\em{exact}} numerical method to study multi-impurity lattice systems, we obtain non-perturbative results that dramatically depart from expectations based on the conventional RKK…
A detailed analysis of the Kondo effect of a magnetic impurity in a zigzag graphene nanoribbon is addressed. An adatom is coupled to the graphene nanoribbon via a hybridization amplitude $Γ_{imp}$ in a hollow or top site configuration. In addition, the adatom is also weakly coupled to a metallic STM tip by a hybridization function $Γ_{tip}$ that provides a Kondo screening of its magnetic moment. The entire system is described by an Anderson-like Hamiltonian whose low-temperature physics is accessed by employing the numerical renormalization group approach, which allows us to obtain the thermod…
We first present a simple proof that for any bipartite lattice at half filling the RKKY interaction is antiferromagnetic between impurities on opposite (i.e., A and B) sublattices and is ferromagnetic between impurities on the same sublattices. This result is valid on all length scales. We then focus on the honeycomb lattice and examine the theorem in the long distance limit by performing the low energy calculation using Dirac electrons. To find the universal (cutoff free) result we perform the calculation in smooth cutoff schemes, as we show that the calculation based on a sharp cutoff leads …
We reveal a new type of supercritical behavior in gapped graphene with two oppositely charged impurities by studying the two-dimensional Dirac equation for quasiparticles with the Coulomb potential regularized at small distances accounting the lattice effects. By utilizing the variational Galerkin--Kantorovich method, we show that for supercritical electric dipole the wave function of the electron bound state changes its localization from the negatively charged impurity to the positively charged one as the distance between the impurities changes. Such a migration of the wave function correspon…
The two-dimensional Ising model is studied by performing computer simulations with one of the Monte Carlo algorithms - the worm algorithm. The critical temperature T_C of the phase transition is calculated by the usage of the critical exponents and the results are compared to the analytical result, giving a very high accuracy. We also show that the magnetic ordering of impurities distributed on a graphene sheet is possible, by simulating the properly constructed model using the worm algorithm. The value of T_C is estimated. Furthermore, the dependence of T_C on the interaction constants is exp…
Localized magnetic moments have been predicted to develop in graphene samples with vacancies or adsorbates. The interplay between such magnetic impurities and graphene's Dirac quasiparticles leads to remarkable many-body phenomena, which have so far proved elusive to experimental efforts. In this article, we study the thermodynamic, spectral and transport signatures of quantum criticality and Kondo physics of a dilute ensemble of atomic impurities in graphene. We consider vacancies and adatoms that either break or preserve graphene's $C_{3v}$ and inversion symmetries. In a neutral graphene sam…
Taking into account the possibility of a p-wave hybridization function $V(\vec k)$ of ad-atom with Dirac electrons in graphene -- which arises for vacancies and hollow-site impurities -- we study the nature of magnetic moment formation within the single impurity Anderson model (SIAM). Compared to the s-wave hybridization function, we find that the local moments formed within the Hartree mean field are robust against the change in the parameters of the model. Further we investigate the stability of the local moments with respect to quantum fluctuations by going beyond the Hartree approximation.…
We use quantum Monte Carlo method to study the indirect coupling between two magnetic impurities on the zigzag edge of graphene ribbon, with respect to the chemical potential $μ$. We find that the spin-spin correlation between two adatoms located on the nearest sites in the zigzag edge are drastically suppressed around the zero-energy. As we switch the system away from half-filling, the antiferromagnetic correlation is first enhanced and then decreased. If the two adatoms are adsorbed on the sites belonging to the same sublattice, we find similar behavior of spin-spin correlation except for a …
This article summarizes our understanding of the Kondo effect in graphene, primarily from a theoretical perspective. We shall describe different ways to create magnetic moments in graphene, either by adatom deposition or via defects. For dilute moments, the theoretical description is in terms of effective Anderson or Kondo impurity models coupled to graphene's Dirac electrons. We shall discuss in detail the physics of these models, including their quantum phase transitions and the effect of carrier doping, and confront this with existing experimental data. Finally, we point out connections to …
We consider an effect of weak impurities on electronic properties of graphene within the functional renormalization-group approach. The energy dependences of the electronic self-energy and density of states near the neutrality point are discussed. Depending on the symmetry of the impurities, the electronic damping $Γ$ and density of states $ρ$ can deviate substantially from those given by the self-consistent Born approximation. We investigate the crossover from the results of the self-consistent Born approximation, which are valid far from the neutrality point to the strong-coupling (diffusive…
We review the theoretical and experimental results connected with the electron states in two-dimensional Dirac systems paying a special attention to the atomic collapse in graphene. Two-electron bound states of a Coulomb impurity are considered too. A rather subtle role of a magnetic field in the supercritical charge problem in graphene is discussed. The electron states in the field of two equally charged impurities are studied and the conditions for supercritical instability to occur are determined. It is shown that the supercriticality of novel type is realized in gapped graphene with two un…
We study the supercritical instability in gapped graphene with two charged impurities separated by distance R using the two-dimensional Dirac equation for electron quasiparticles. Attention is paid to a situation when charges of impurities are subcritical, whereas their total charge exceeds a critical one. The critical distance R_{cr} in the system of two charged centers is defined as that at which the electron bound state with the lowest energy reaches the boundary of the lower continuum. A variational calculation of the critical distance R_{cr} separating the supercritical (R<R_{cr}) and sub…
We study the Dirac equation for quasiparticles in gapped graphene with two oppositely charged impurities by using the technique of linear combination of atomic orbitals and variational Galerkin--Kantorovich method. We show that for sufficiently large charges of impurities the wave function of the occupied electron bound state of the highest energy changes its localization from the negatively charged impurity to the positively charged one as the distance between the impurities increases. This migration of the electron wave function of supercritical electric dipole is a generalization of the fam…
We study RKKY interactions for magnetic impurities on graphene in situations where the electronic spectrum is in the form of Landau levels. Two such situations are considered: non-uniformly strained graphene, and graphene in a real magnetic field. RKKY interactions are enhanced by the lowest Landau level, which is shown to form electron states binding with the spin impurities and add a strong non-perturbative contribution to pairwise impurity spin interactions when their separation $R$ no more than the magnetic length. Beyond this interactions are found to fall off as $1/R^3$ due to perturbati…
We study the RKKY interaction between two magnetic impurities located on same layer (intralayer case) or on different layers (interlayer case) in undoped bilayer graphene in the four-bands model, by directly calculating the Green functions in the eigenvalues and eigenvectors representation. Our results show that both intra- and interlayer RKKY interactions between two magnetic impurities located on same (opposite) sublattice are always ferromagnetic (antiferromagnetic). Furthermore we find unusual long-distance decay of the RKKY interaction in BLG. The intralyer RKKY interactions between two m…
We study rectangular graphene flakes using mean field states as the basis for a configuration interaction calculation, which allows us to analyze the low lying electronic excited states including electron correlations beyond the mean field level. We find that the lowest energy transition is polarized along the long axis of the flake, but the charge distributions involved in these transitions are invariably localized on the zigzag edges. We also investigate the impact of both short and long range impurity potentials on the optical properties of these systems. We predict that even a weak impurit…
At low Reynolds numbers, the wind flow in the wake of a single wind turbine is generally not turbulent. However, turbines in wind farms affect each other's wakes so that a turbulent flow can arise. In the present work, an analogue of this effect for the massless charge carrier flow around obstacles in graphene is outlined. We use a relativistic hydrodynamic simulation to analyze the flow in a sample containing impurities. Depending on the density of impurities in the sample, we indeed find evidence for potentially turbulent flow and discuss experimental consequences.

We investigate the interactions between two identical magnetic impurities substituted into a graphene superlattice. Using a first-principles approach, we calculate the electronic and magnetic properties for transition-metal substituted graphene systems with varying spatial separation. These calculations are compared for three different magnetic impurities, manganese, chromium, and vanadium. We determine the electronic band structure, density of states, and Millikan populations (magnetic moment) for each atom, as well as calculate the exchange parameter between the two magnetic atoms as a funct…
