A torti-rational knot, denoted by K(2a,b|r), is a knot obtained from the 2-bridge link B(2a,b) by applying Dehn twists an arbitrary number of times, r, along one component of B(2a,b). We determine the genus of K(2a,b|r) and solve a question of when K(2a,b|r) is fibred. In most cases, the Alexander polynomials determine the genus and fibredness of these knots. We develop both algebraic and geometric techniques to describe the genus and fibredness by means of continued fraction expansions of b/2a. Then, we explicitly construct minimal genus Seifert surfaces. As an application, we solve the same question for the satellite knots of tunnel number one.
The genus of satellite tunnel number one knots and torti-rational knots is computed using the tools introduced by Floyd and Hatcher. An implementation of an algorithm is given to compute genus and slopes of minimal genus Seifert surfaces for such knots.
We explore algebraic characterizations of 2-knots whose associated knot manifolds fibre over lower-dimensional orbifolds, and consider also some issues related to the groups of higher-dimensional fibred knots.
Ozsváth and Szabó conjectured that knot Floer homology detects fibred knots in $S^3$. We will prove this conjecture for null-homologous knots in arbitrary closed 3--manifolds. Namely, if $K$ is a knot in a closed 3--manifold $Y$, $Y-K$ is irreducible, and $\hat{HFK}(Y,K)$ is monic, then $K$ is fibred. The proof relies on previous works due to Gabai, Ozsváth--Szabó, Ghiggini and the author. A corollary is that if a knot in $S^3$ admits a lens space surgery, then the knot is fibred.
We introduce a new algebraic topological technique to detect non-fibred knots in the three sphere using the twisted Alexander invariants. As an application, we show that for any Seifert matrix of a knot with a nontrivial Alexander polynomial, there exist infinitely many non-fibered knots with the given Seifert matrix. We illustrate examples of knots that have trivial Alexander polynomials but do not have twisted Alexander invariants of fibred knots.
We prove that there are exactly $6$ Nil Seifert fibred spaces which can be obtained by Dehn surgeries on non-trefoil knots in $S^3$, with $\{60, 144, 156, 288, 300\}$ as the exact set of all such surgery slopes up to taking the mirror images of the knots. We conjecture that there are exactly $4$ specific hyperbolic knots in $S^3$ which admit Nil Seifert fibred surgery. We also give some more general results and a more general conjecture concerning Seifert fibred surgeries on hyperbolic knots in $S^3$.
We show that if $B$ is an aspherical 2-orbifold in one of the families known to have orbifold fundamental groups of weight 1 then $B$ is the base of a Seifert fibration of a 2-knot manifold $M(K)$.
For every genus $g\geq 2$, we construct an infinite family of strongly quasipositive fibred knots having the same Seifert form as the torus knot $T(2,2g+1)$. In particular, their signatures and four-genera are maximal and their homological monodromies (hence their Alexander module structures) agree. On the other hand, the geometric stretching factors are pairwise distinct and the knots are pairwise not ribbon concordant.
This paper gives a new obstruction for ribbon-move equivalence of 2-knots. Let $K$ and $K'$ be 2-knots. Let $K$ and $K'$ are ribbon-move equivalent. One corollary to our main theorem is as follows. A 2-dimensional fibered knot whose fiber is the punctured 3-dimensional torus is not ribbon-move equivalent to any 2-dimensional knot whose Seifert hypersurface is a punctured homology sphere.
We consider the question of when is the closed manifold obtained by elementary surgery on an $n$-knot Seifert fibred over a 2-orbifold. After some observations on the classical case, we concentrate on the cases n=2 and 3. We have found a new family of 2-knots with torsion-free, solvable group, overlooked in earlier work. We know of no higher dimensional examples.
Ozsvath and Szabo conjectured that knot Floer homology detects fibred knots. We propose a strategy to approach this conjecture based on Gabai's theory of sutured manifold decomposition and contact topology. We implement this strategy for genus-one knots, obtaining as a corollary that, if rational surgery on a knot $K$ gives the Poincare homology sphere $Σ(2,3,5)$, then $K$ is the left-handed trefoil knot.
We consider vector fields on knot/link complements in $S^3$ which are transverse to the fibres of a fibration of the complement over a circle. We prove that a large class of fibred knots/links, including all non-torus fibred 2-bridge knots, has the following property: any vector field transverse to the fibres of the fibration of the complement must possess periodic orbits representing all possible knot and link types.
We prove that the Knot Floer homology group of a fibred knot of genus g in the Alexander grading 1-g is isomorphic to a version of the fixed point Floer homology of an area-preserving representative of the monodromy.
Ozsváth and Szabó conjectured that knot Floer homology detects fibred links. We will verify this conjecture for closed 3-braids, by classifying fibred closed 3-braids. In particular, given a nontrivial closed 3-braid, either it is fibred, or it differs from a fibred link by a half twist. The proof uses Gabai's method of disk decomposition.
We say a knot $k$ in the 3-sphere $\mathbb S^3$ has {\it Property $IE$} if the infinite cyclic cover of the knot exterior embeds into $\mathbb S^3$. Clearly all fibred knots have Property $IE$. There are infinitely many non-fibred knots with Property $IE$ and infinitely many non-fibred knots without property $IE$. Both kinds of examples are established here for the first time. Indeed we show that if a genus 1 non-fibred knot has Property $IE$, then its Alexander polynomial $Δ_k(t)$ must be either 1 or $2t^2-5t+2$, and we give two infinite families of non-fibred genus 1 knots with Property $IE$…
We study Dehn surgeries on null-homotopic knots that yield fibred $3$--manifolds when an additional (but natural) homological restriction is imposed. The major tool used is Gabai's theory of sutured manifold decomposition. Such surgeries are negative examples to a question of Michel Boileau. Another result we will prove is about surgeries which reduce the Thurston norm of a fibred manifold.
We complete the TOP classification of 2-knots with torsion-free, solvable knot group by showing that fibred 2-knots with closed fibre the Hantzsche-Wendt flat 3-manifold $HW$ are not reflexive, while every fibred 2-knot with closed fibre a $\mathbb{N}il^3$-manifold with base orbifold $S^2(3,3,3)$ is reflexive, and by giving explicit normal forms for the strict weight orbits of normal generators for the groups of all knots in either class. We also determine when the knots are amphicheiral or invertible, and show that the only non-trivial doubly null-concordant knots with such groups are those w…
For each three-bridge link of a certain form, we construct a taut Seifert surface for the link and establish whether the link is fibred. Using this, we also give the genus and fibredness of satellite knots whose pattern is constructed from a two-component two-bridge link in the case not addressed by work of Hirasawa and Murasugi.
Given a closed 3--manifold $Y$, we show that the Heegaard Floer homology determines whether $Y$ fibres over the circle with a fibre of negative Euler characteristic. This is an analogue of an earlier result about knots proved by Ghiggini and the author.
It was recently shown that there exists an explicit bound for the number of Pachner moves needed to connect any two triangulation of any Haken 3-manifold which contains no fibred sub-manifolds as strongly simple pieces of its JSJ-decomposition. In this paper we prove a generalisation of that result to all knot complements. The explicit formula for the bound is in terms of the numbers of tetrahedra in the two triangulations. This gives a conceptually trivial algorithm for recognising any knot complement among all 3-manifolds.
We investigate the line between tight and overtwisted for surgeries on fibred transverse knots in contact 3-manifolds. When the contact structure $ξ_K$ is supported by the fibred knot $K \subset M$, we obtain a characterisation of when negative surgeries result in a contact structure with non-vanishing Heegaard Floer contact class. To do this, we leverage information about the contact structure $ξ_{\overline{K}}$ supported by the mirror knot $\overline{K} \subset -M$. We derive several corollaries about the existence of tight contact structures, L-space knots outside $S^3$, non-planar contact …
We calculate Blanchfield pairings of 3-manifolds. In particular, we give a formula for the Blanchfield pairing of a fibred 3-manifold and we give a new proof that the Blanchfield pairing of a knot can be expressed in terms of a Seifert matrix.
It is not known whether there exists a computable function bounding the number of Pachner moves needed to connect any two triangulation of a compact 3-manifold. In this paper we find an explicit bound of this kind for all Haken 3-manifolds which contain no fibred submanifolds as strongly simple pieces of their JSJ-decomposition. The explicit formula for the bound is in terms of the number of tetrahedra in the two triangulations. This implies a conceptually trivial algorithm for recognising any non-fibred knot complement among all 3-manifolds.
We prove that fibred knots cannot be untied with $\bar{t}_{2k}$-moves, for all $k \geq 2$. More generally, we give an upper bound on the number of two strand twist operations that allow to untie a knot with non-trivial HOMFLY polynomial, in terms of the minimal crossing number, and the braid index. As a by-product, we prove that the braid index of a two-bridge knot cannot be lowered by applying $t_{2k}$-moves, for all but finitely many $k \in \mathbb{N}$.
Let E(1)_K denote the closed 4-manifold that is homotopy equivalent (hence homeomorphic) to the rational elliptic surface E(1) and is obtained by performing Fintushel-Stern knot surgery on E(1) using a knot K in S^3. We construct an infinite family of homologous non-isotopic symplectic tori representing a primitive homology class in E(1)_K when K is any nontrivial fibred knot in S^3. We also show how these tori can be non-isotopically embedded as homologous symplectic submanifolds in other symplectic 4-manifolds.
