We present a pilot study of the stellar populations of 8 AGN hosts at z~1 and compare to (1) lower redshift samples and (2) a sample of nonactive galaxies of similar redshift. We utilize K' images in the GOODS South field obtained with the laser guide star adaptive optics (LGSAO) system at Keck Observatory. We combine this K' data with B, V, i, and z imaging from the ACS on HST to give multi-color photometry at a matched spatial resolution better than 100 mas in all bands. The hosts harbor AGN as inferred from their high X-ray luminosities (L_X > 10^42 ergs/s) or mid-IR colors. We find a correlation between the presence of younger stellar populations and the strength of the AGN, as measured with [OIII] line luminosity or X-ray (2-10 keV) luminosity. This finding is consistent with similar studies at lower redshift. Of the three Type II galaxies, two are disk galaxies and one is of irregular type, while in the Type I sample there only one disk-like source and four sources with smooth, elliptical/spheroidal morphologies. In addition, the mid-IR SEDs of the strong Type II AGN indicate that they are excited to LIRG (Luminous InfraRed Galaxy) status via galactic starbursting, while the strong Type I AGN are excited to LIRG status via hot dust surrounding the central AGN. This supports the notion that the obscured nature of Type II AGN at z~1 is connected with global starbursting and that they may be extincted by kpc-scale dusty features that are byproducts of this starbursting.
We investigate the optical colours of X-ray sources from the Extended Chandra Deep Field South (ECDFS) using photometry from the COMBO-17 survey, aiming to explore AGN - galaxy feedback models. The X-ray sources populate both the ``blue'' and the ``red sequence'' on the colour-magnitude diagram. However, sources in the ``red sequence'' appear systematically more obscured. HST imaging from the GEMS survey demonstrates that the nucleus does not affect significantly the observed colours, and therefore red sources are early-type systems. In the context of AGN feedback models, this means that there…
We report on a spectro-polarimetric analysis of four southern Ultra-Luminous Infrared Galaxies (ULIRGs), aimed at constraining the presence of hidden broad AGN lines. For IRAS 19254--7245 ({\sl The Superantennae}) we find evidence for a significant level of polarized light in the H$α$ line with FWHM$>$2300 km/s. Some degree of polarization is also detected in IRAS 20551-4250, though with lower significance. In the two other sources (IRAS 20100--4156 and IRAS 22491--1808) no polarized signals are detected. Although it is unclear from the present data if the origin of polarization is due to refl…
Spectra, position, magnitudes and colors are presented for 485 faint (B<20.5) emission line objects selected with the ultraviolet-excess (UVX) criterion on a area of 24.6 sq. deg in the South Galactic Pole. The objects were selected from the analysis of pixel-to-pixel stacking of COSMOS scans of UKST U, J and R plates. The candidates were observed with the Meudon-ESO Fiber Optics System (MEFOS) at the ESO 3.6m telescope. 429 type 1 AGNs have been identified (373 in the redshift range 0.3<z<2.2). This sample has allowed the measure of a difference on the QSO clustering evolution in comparison w…
We investigate the use of optical variability to identify and study Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) in the GOODS-South field. A sample of 22 mid-infrared power law sources and 102 X-ray sources with optical counterparts in the HST ACS images were selected. Each object is classified with a variability significance value related to the standard deviation of its magnitude in five epochs separated by 45-day intervals. The variability significance is compared to the optical, mid-IR, and X-ray properties of the sources. We find that 26% of all AGN candidates (either X-ray- or mid-IR-selected) are optic…
We explore the nature of the radio emission of X-ray selected AGN by combining deep radio (1.4GHz; 60micro-Jy) and X-ray data with multiwavelength (optical, mid-infrared) observations in the Extended Chandra Deep Field South (E-CDFS). The fraction of radio detected X-ray sources increases from 9% in the E-CDFS to 14% in the central region of this field, which has deeper X-ray coverage from the 1Ms CDFS. We find evidence that the radio emission of up to 60% of the hard X-ray/radio matched AGN is likely associated with star-formation in the host galaxy. Firstly, the mid-IR (24micron) properties …
A large population of heavily obscured, Compton Thick AGNs is predicted by models of galaxy formation, models of Cosmic X-ray Background and by the ``relic'' super-massive black-hole mass function measured from local bulges. However, so far only a handful of Compton thick AGNs have been possibly detected using even the deepest Chandra and XMM surveys. Compton-thick AGNs can be recovered thanks to the reprocessing of the AGN UV emission in the infrared by selecting sources with AGN luminosity's in the mid-infrared and faint near-infrared and optical emission. To this purpose, we make use of dee…
We present preliminary results from imaging three HST/WFPC2 fields in V and I within the Chandra Deep Field South (CDFS). HST's sensitivity and resolution are sufficient to reveal optical counterparts for 24 of the 26 CDFS X-ray sources detected in the 300 ksec X-ray catalog and to determine the morphologies of most of these. We find that the X-ray sources comprise two apparently distinct populations of optical candidates: one optically faint (I > 24) with V - I colors consistent with the I > 24 field population; the other significantly brighter (I < 22) with colors redder than the I < 22 fiel…
We present the first results of our optical spectroscopy program aimed to provide redshifts and identifications for the X-ray sources in the Extended Chandra Deep Field South. A total of 339 sources were targeted using the IMACS spectrograph at the Magellan telescopes and the VIMOS spectrograph at the VLT. We measured redshifts for 186 X-ray sources, including archival data and a literature search. We find that the AGN host galaxies have on average redder rest-frame optical colors than non-active galaxies, and that they live mostly in the "green valley". The dependence of the fraction of AGN t…
Variability is a property shared by virtually all active galactic nuclei (AGNs), and was adopted as a criterion for their selection using data from multi epoch surveys. Low Luminosity AGNs (LLAGNs) are contaminated by the light of their host galaxies, and cannot therefore be detected by the usual colour techniques. For this reason, their evolution in cosmic time is poorly known. Consistency with the evolution derived from X-ray detected samples has not been clearly established so far, also because the low luminosity population consists of a mixture of different object types. LLAGNs can be dete…
We present a detailed X-ray spectral analysis of the sources in the 1Ms catalog of the Chandra Deep Field South (CDFS) taking advantage of optical spectroscopy and photometric redshifts for 321 sources. As a default spectral model, we adopt a power law with slope Gamma with an intrinsic redshifted absorption N_H, a fixed Galactic absorption and an unresolved Fe emission line. For 82 X-ray bright sources, we perform the X-ray spectral analysis leaving both Gamma and N_H free. The weighted mean value is <Gamma>~ 1.75+-0.02, with an intrinsic dispersion of sigma~0.30. We do not find hints of a co…
We report the discovery of water maser emission in eight active galactic nuclei (AGN) with the 70-m NASA Deep Space Network (DSN) antennas at Tidbinbilla, Australia and Robledo, Spain. The positions of the newly discovered masers, measured with the VLA, are consistent with the optical positions of the host nuclei to within 1 sigma (0.3 arcsec radio and 1.3 arcsec optical) and most likely mark the locations of the embedded central engines. The spectra of two sources, NGC 3393 and NGC 5495, display the characteristic spectral signature of emission from an edge-on accretion disk, with orbital vel…
We report the cumulative results of five surveys for water maser emission at 1.35 cm wavelength in 131 active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and star-forming galaxies, conducted at the Parkes Observatory between 1993 and 1998. We detected one new maser, in the edge-on galaxy IRASF01063-8034, which exhibits a single, about 0.1 Jy spectral feature at 4282+/-6 km/s (heliocentric) with an unusually large 54+/-16 km/s half-power full width. The centroid velocity of the emission increased to 4319.6+/-0.6 km/s (38+/-2 km/s width) over the 13 days between discovery and confirmation of the detection. A similar…
Using HST/ACS images in four bands F435W, F606W, F775W and F850LP, we identify optical counterparts to the X-ray sources in the Chandra Deep Field South in the GOODS South field. A detailed study has been made of these sources to study their morphological types. We use methods like decomposition of galaxy luminosity profiles, color maps and visual inspection of 192 galaxies which are identified as possible optical counterparts of Chandra X-ray sources in the CDFS-GOODS field. We find that most moderate luminosity AGN hosts are bulge dominated in the redshift range (z \approx 0.4-1.3), but not …
We present the first results from the COLA (Compact Objects in Low-power AGN) project which aims to determine the relationship between one facet of AGN activity, the compact radio core, with star formation in the circumnuclear region of the host galaxy. This will be accomplished by the comparison of the multi-wavelength properties of a sample of AGN with compact radio cores to those of a sample of AGN without compact cores and a matched sample of galaxies without AGN. In this paper we discuss the selection criteria for our galaxy samples and present the initial radio observations of the 107 So…
I present the results of time-resolved photometry of a selection of central stars of planetary nebulae. The study reveals periodic variability in two of the eight central stars observed, those of NGC 6026 and NGC 6337. The variability matches that expected from a binary system in which a hot primary irradiates a cooler secondary star.
Starting from a complete sample of type I AGN observed by INTEGRAL in the 20-40 keV band, we have selected a set of 8 AGN which can be classified as radio loud objects according to their 1.4 GHz power density, radio to hard X-ray flux flux density ratio and radio morphology. The sample contains 6 Broad Line Radio Galaxies and 2 candidate ones. Most of the objects in our sample display a double lobe morphology, both on small and large scales. For all the objects, we present broad-band (1-110 keV) spectral analysis using INTEGRAL observations together with archival XMM-Newton, Chandra, Swift/XRT…
We investigate the spatial clustering of X-ray selected sources in the two deepest X-ray fields to date, namely the 2Msec Chandra Deep Field North (CDFN) and the 1Msec Chandra Deep Field South (CDFS). The projected correlation function w(r_p), measured on scales ~0.2-10 h^-1 Mpc for a sample of 240 sources with spectroscopic redshift in the CDFN and 124 sources in the CDFS at a median redshift of z~0.8, is used to constrain the amplitude and slope of the real space correlation function xi(r)=(r/r0)^-gamma. The clustering signal is detected at high confidence (>~ 7 sigma) in both fields. The am…
Using the Green Bank Telescope, we conducted a ``snapshot'' survey for water maser emission toward the nuclei of 611 galaxies and detected eight new sources. The sample consisted of nearby (v < 5000 km/s) and luminous (M_B < -19.5) galaxies, some with known nuclear activity but most not previously known to host AGNs. Our detections include both megamasers associated with AGNs and relatively low luminosity masers probably associated with star formation. The detection in UGC 3789 is particularly intriguing because the spectrum shows both systemic and high-velocity lines indicative of emission fr…
Based on the photometry of 10 near-UV, optical, and near-infrared bands of the Chandra Deep Field South, we estimate the photometric redshifts for 342 X-ray sources, which constitute ~99% of all the detected X-ray sources in the field. The models of spectral energy distribution are based on galaxies and a combination of power-law continuum and emission lines. Color information is useful for source classifications: Type-I AGN show non-thermal spectral features that are distinctive from galaxies and Type-II AGN. The hardness ratio in X-ray and the X-ray-to-optical flux ratio are also useful disc…
We investigate the nature of a sample of 92 Spitzer/MIPS 24 micron selected galaxies in the CDFS, showing power law-like emission in the Spitzer/IRAC 3.6-8 micron bands. The main goal is to determine whether the galaxies not detected in X-rays (47% of the sample) are part of the hypothetical population of obscured AGN not detected even in deep X-ray surveys. The majority of the IR power-law galaxies are ULIRGs at z>1, and those with LIRG-like IR luminosities are usually detected in X-rays. The optical to IR spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of the X-ray detected galaxies are almost equally …
Homan & Lister (2006) have recently published circular-polarization (CP) detections for 34 objects in the MOJAVE sample - a set of bright, compact AGN being monitored by the Very Long Baseline Array at 15 GHz. We report the detection of 15-GHz parsec-scale CP in two more AGN (3C345 and 2231+114), and confirm the MOJAVE detection of CP in 1633+382. It is generally believed that the most likely mechanism for the generation of this CP is Faraday conversion of linear polarization to CP. A helical jet magnetic-field (B-field) geometry can facilitate this process - linearly polarized emission from t…
This is the second paper of a series describing the Asiago-ESO/RASS QSO survey, a project aimed at the construction of an all-sky statistically well-defined sample of very bright QSOs (B_J < 15). Such a survey is required to remove the present uncertainties about the properties of the local QSO population and constitutes an homogeneous database for detailed evolutionary studies of AGN. We present here the complete Southern Sample, which comprises 243 bright (12.60 < B_J < 15.13) QSO candidates at high galactic latitudes (|b_{gal}| > 30^{\circ}). The area covered by the survey is 5660 sq. deg. …
We investigate the evolution over the last 6.3 Gyr of cosmic time (i.e., since z ~ 0.7) of the average X-ray properties of early-type galaxies within the Extended Chandra Deep Field-South (E-CDF-S). Our early-type galaxy sample includes 539 objects with red-sequence colors and Sersic indices larger than n = 2.5, which were selected jointly from the COMBO-17 (Classifying Objects by Medium-Band Observations in 17 Filters) and GEMS (Galaxy Evolution from Morphologies and SEDs) surveys. We utilize the deep Chandra observations over the E-CDF-S and X-ray stacking analyses to constrain primarily the…
We present a detailed analysis of 256 radio sources from our deep (flux density limit of 42 microJy at the field centre at 1.4 GHz) Chandra Deep Field South 1.4 and 5 GHz VLA survey. The radio population is studied by using a wealth of multi-wavelength information in the radio, optical, and X-ray bands. The availability of redshifts for ~ 80% of the sources in our complete sample allows us to derive reliable luminosity estimates for the majority of the objects. X-ray data, including upper limits, for all our sources turn out to be a key factor in establishing the nature of faint radio sources.…
This paper contains a list of new AGN candidates identified from the examination of 3500 optical spectra contained in the database of the Southern Sky Redshift Survey Extension (SSRS2). The classification of galaxies was done using standard diagnostics and a total of (5) Seyfert 1, (12) Seyfert 2 and (10) LINERs were found. We also present a list of 60 galaxies for which we could not secure a definite classification, but which might present some level of nuclear activity.
We present a Chandra study of the metal distribution in the X-ray bright compact group of galaxies HCG 62. We find that the diffuse X-ray emission is peaked at the core of the central galaxy NGC 4778, and is dominated by the contribution of the hot gas. The diffuse emission is roughly symmetric within \simeq0.25^{\prime}, which is straddled by double-sided X-ray cavities aligned in the northeast-southwest direction. By mapping the emission hardness ratio distributions and by performing the 2-dimensional spectral analysis, we identify a remarkable high-abundance arc region at about 2^{\prime} (…
We report 20 and 6 cm VLA deep observations of the CDF-S including the Extended CDF-S. We discuss the radio properties of 266 cataloged radio sources, of which 198 are above a 20 cm completeness level reaching down to 43 microJy at the center of the field. Survey observations made at 6 cm over a more limited region covers the original CDF-S to a comparable level of sensitivity as the 20 cm observations. Of 266 cataloged radio sources, 52 have X-ray counterparts in the CDF-S and a further 37 in the E-CDF-S area not covered by the 1 Megasecond exposure. Using a wide range of material, we have fo…
We present HST/WFPC2 observations of a well-defined sample of 40 X-ray sources with X-ray fluxes above the detection threshold of the full 1 Msec Chandra Deep Field South (CDFS). The sensitivity and spatial resolution of our HST observations are sufficient to detect the optical counterparts of 37 of the X-ray sources, yielding information on their morphologies and environments. In this paper we extend the results obtained in our previous study on the 300 ks CDFS X-ray data (Schreier et al. 2001, Paper I). Specifically, we show that the optical counterparts to the X-ray sources are divided into…
In our search for ``hidden'' AGN we present results from a Chandra observation of the nearby cluster Abell 2255. Eight cluster galaxies are associated with point-like X-ray emission, and we classify these galaxies based on their X-ray, radio, and optical properties. At least three are associated with active galactic nuclei (AGN) with no optical signatures of nuclear activity, with a further two being potential AGN. Of the potential AGN, one corresponds to a galaxy with a post-starburst optical spectrum. The remaining three X-ray detected cluster galaxies consist of two starbursts and an ellipt…
We present quantitative morphological analyses of 37 HST/WFPC2 counterparts of X-ray sources in the 1 Ms Chandra Deep Field-South (CDFS). We investigate: 1) 1-D surface brightness profiles via isophotal ellipse fitting; 2) 2-D, PSF- convolved, bulge+disk+nucleus profile-fitting; 3) asymmetry and concentration indices compared with all ~3000 sources in our three WFPC2 fields; and 4) near- neighbor analyses comparing local environments of X-ray sources versus the field control sample. Significant nuclear point-source optical components appear in roughly half of the resolved HST/WFPC2 counterpart…
We present the first measurement of the AGN fraction in high-redshift clusters of galaxies (z~0.6) with spectroscopy of one cluster and archival data for three additional clusters. We identify 8 AGN in all four of these clusters from the Chandra data, which are sensitive to AGN with hard X-ray (2-10keV) luminosity L_{X,H} > 10^43 erg/s in host galaxies more luminous than a rest frame M_R < -20 mag. This stands in sharp contrast to the one AGN with L_{X,H} > 10^43 erg/s we discovered in our earlier study of eight low-redshift clusters with z=0.06-0.31 (average z~0.2). Three of the four high-red…
The H.E.S.S. collaboration recently performed the accurate measurements of the gamma-ray spectra above 200 GeV for two BL Lac-type AGN in the Southern sky: PKS 2155-304 and PKS 2005-489. The TeV spectrum of the BL Lac object 1ES 2344+514 has also been recently measured by the Whipple collaboration. Using the results of phenomenological calculations of the SED of the EBL we have extracted the intrinsic gamma-ray spectra of these blazars. Consequently we have shown that these spectra can be fitted well by means of a synchrotron self Compton model.
We report on the discovery of a z = 3.16 Lyman-alpha emitting blob in the GOODS South field. The blob has a total Ly-alpha luminosity of ~ 10^(43) erg s^(-1) and a diameter larger than 60 kpc. The available multi-wavelength data in the GOODS field consists of 13 bands from X-rays (Chandra) to infrared (Spitzer). Unlike other discovered Ly-alpha blobs, this blob shows no obvious continuum counter-part in any of the broad-bands. In particular, no optical counter-parts are found in the deep HST/ACS imaging available. For previously published blobs, AGN (Active Galactic Nuclei) or 'superwind' mode…
We present first results of the X-ray spectral analysis of the 500 ksec deep survey obtained with XMM-Newton on the Chandra Deep Field South (CDFS). Statistical distributions of spectral index and intrinsic absorption are derived for a sample containing 70 sources with a count limit of 100 (flux limit in the [2-10] keV band of 8.9 $\times 10^{-16}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$), of which 44 have redshift identification. We observe a separation between the type-1 and the type-2 AGN in diagnostics involving different X-ray parameters. Using the subsample with known $z$, we show that this separation be…
Deep X-ray surveys are providing crucial information on the evolution of AGN and galaxies. We review some of the latest results based on the X-ray spectral analysis of the sources detected in the Chandra Deep Field South, namely: i) constraints on obscured accretion; ii) constraints on the missing fraction of the X-ray background; iii) the redshift distribution of Compton-thick sources and TypeII QSO; iv) the detection of star formation activity in high-z galaxies through stacking techniques; v) the detection of large scale structure in the AGN distribution and its effect on nuclear activity. …
We combine bright XMM data with the Chandra Deep Field South observations in order to explore the behavior of the intrinsic AGN absorption, as a function of redshift and luminosity. Our sample consists of 359 sources selected in the hard 2-8 keV band, spanning the flux range 6\times10^{-16}-$3\times10^{-13} erg s^-1 cm^-2 with a high rate of spectroscopic or photometric redshift completeness (100 and 85 per cent respectively for the Chandra and XMM data. We derive the column density values using X-ray spectral fits. We find that the fraction of obscured AGN falls with increasing luminosity in a…
The results of optical spectroscopy of H II regions in a sample of southern dwarf irregulars consisting of five dwarf galaxies in the Centaurus A group, four dwarfs in the Sculptor group, and eight additional dwarf galaxies are presented. Oxygen abundances are derived using the direct method where [O III]4363 is detected; otherwise, abundances are derived with the bright-line method using the McGaugh and the Pilyugin calibrations. ESO358-G060 has the lowest oxygen abundance (12+log(O/H) = 7.32), which is comparable to the value for the second most metal-poor galaxy known (SBS0335-052). In all,…
We describe in this paper the ROSAT Ultra Deep Survey (UDS), an extension of the ROSAT Deep Survey (RDS) in the Lockman Hole. The UDS reaches a flux level of 1.2 x 10E-15 erg/cm2/s in 0.5-2.0 keV energy band, a level ~4.6 times fainter than the RDS. We present nearly complete spectroscopic identifications (90%) of the sample of 94 X-ray sources based on low-resolution Keck spectra. The majority of the sources (57) are broad emission line AGNs (type I), whereas a further 13 AGNs show only narrow emission lines or broad Balmer emission lines with a large Balmer decrement (type II AGNs) indicatin…
The ROSAT ALL Sky Survey Bright Source Catalogue (RASS-BSC) has been correlated with the Catalogue of Principal Galaxies (PGC) to identify new extragalactic counterparts. 550 reliable optical counterparts have been detected. We took optical spectra of 176 X-ray candidates and companions at ESO, Calar Alto observatory and McDonald observatory. We discuss the redshift-, linewidth-, as well as optical and X-ray luminosity distribution of our ROSAT selected sample. 139 galaxies of our 166 X-ray counterparts have been identified as AGN with 93 being Seyfert 1 galaxies (61%). Eighteen of them (20%) …
We have performed a deep spectroscopic survey of extremely red galaxies on the GOODS-South field, using GMOS on Gemini South. We present here spectra and redshifts for 16 ERGs at 0.87<z<2.02, to a limit K=20.2. The ERHs are a mixture of spheroidals, mergers and spirals, with one AGN. For at least 10 of these galaxies we observe [OII] emission lines. We perform an age-dating analysis by fitting the spectra and 9-band photometry of the ERGs with models of passively evolving stellar populations combined with a younger star-forming component. The best-fitting ages for the old stellar components ra…
The Australia Telescope Hubble Deep Field-South (ATHDFS) survey of the Hubble Deep Field South reaches sensitivities of ~10 miceoJyJy at 1.4, 2.5, 5.2 and 8.7 GHz, making the ATHDFS one of the deepest surveys ever performed with the Australia Telescope Compact Array. Here we present the optical identifications of the ATHDFS radio sources using data from the literature. We find that ~66% of the radio sources have optical counterparts to I = 23.5 mag. Deep HST imaging of the area identifies a further 12% of radio sources. We present new spectroscopic observations for 98 of the radio sources, and…
We have combined multi-wavelength observations of a selected sample of starforming galaxies with galaxy evolution models in order to compare the results obtained for different SFR tracers and to study the effect that the evolution of the starforming regions has on them. We also aimed at obtaining a better understanding of the corrections due to extinction and nuclear activity on the derivation of the SFR. We selected the sample from Chandra data for the well studied region Chandra Deep Field South (CDFS) and chose the objects that also have UV and IR data from GALEX and GOODS-Spitzer respectiv…
We present Spitzer 24micron imaging of 1.5 < z < 2.5 Distant Red Galaxies (DRGs) in the 10arcmin by 10arcmin Extended Hubble Deep Field South of the Multiwavelength Survey by Yale-Chile. We detect 65% of the DRGs with K_AB < 23.2 mag at S_24micron > 40uJy, and conclude that the bulk of the DRG population are dusty active galaxies. A mid-infrared (MIR) color analysis with IRAC data suggests that the MIR fluxes are not dominated by buried AGN, and we interpret the high detection rate as evidence for a high average star formation rate of <SFR> = 130+/-30 M/yr. From this, we infer that DRGs are im…
